Case Study for Typographic Portrait

Client Event

New York Public Library for the Performing Arts

Problem

The NYPL requires a portrait of actor Boris Karloff as Frankenstein’s monster for the upcomming event to encourage attendance. The image will be used in a promotional poster and must appeal to a wide audience.

Solution

Since the event is being held at the NYPL, I plan to use the text from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein novel, quotes from the films (both Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein), and other associated phrases to render a type-based portrait of Boris Karloff as “the Monster.”

“Jeepers Creepers, It’s Boris Karloff!” is a salute to the life and career of Boris Karloff. Born William Henry Pratt in England in 1887, Karloff became a horror-movie star playing the Monster in James Whale’s 1931 film Frankenstein. The evening will feature a guest appearance by the actor’s daughter, Sara Karloff.

I sickened as I read. `Hateful day when I received life!' I exclaimed in agony. `Accursed creator! Why did you form a monster so hideous that even YOU turned from me in disgust? God, in pity, made man beautiful and alluring, after his own image; but my form is a filthy type of yours, more horrid even from the very resemblance. Satan had his companions, fellow devils, to admire and encourage him, but I am solitary and abhorred. “You are in the wrong," replied the fiend; "and instead of threatening, I am content to reason with you. I am malicious because I am miserable. Am I not shunned and hated by all mankind? You, my creator, would tear me to pieces and triumph; remember that, and tell me why I should pity man more than he pities me? You would not call it murder if you could precipitate me into one of those ice-rifts and destroy my frame, the work of your own hands. Shall I respect man when he condemns me? Let him live with me in the interchange of kindness, and instead of injury I would bestow every benefit upon him with tears of gratitude at his acceptance. But that cannot be; the human senses are insurmountable barriers to our union. Yet mine shall not be the submission of abject slavery. I will revenge my injuries; if I cannot inspire love, I will cause fear, and chiefly towards you my archenemy, because my creator, do I swear inextinguishable hatred. Have a care; I will work at your destruction, nor finish until I desolate your heart, so that you shall curse the hour of your birth.

Thursday, October 27

The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts Held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Bruno Walter Auditorium, the story of Boris Karloff’s life will take the form of a multimedia “stage documentary,” with readings and impersonations by live actors, interwoven with rare film and audio excerpts. His daughter, Sara Karloff, will take the stage for an interview and Q&A session. Come armed with a question—she won’t bite! After all, one monster her father never played was Dracula.
