The Three Billy Goats Gruff and Other Stories

Page 1

Snake’s Amazing Tales Jolly Phonics Readers are fully decodable books for new readers The text in these Green Level Books (third level) uses only decodable regular words (words that use the letter-sound knowledge taught so far: the 42 letter main letter sounds, the alternative sound of ‹y› at the end of words like happy and sunny and the ‘hop-over ‹e›’ spellings of the long vowel sounds) and a small number of ‘tricky’ words (frequently used words that are not fully decodable at this stage).

All the tricky words and letter sounds used in this book are shown on the front inside cover; these can be used as a quick practice activity before starting the book.

Faint type is used for any silent letters, like the ‹b› in ‘lamb’.

Comprehension questions and discussion topics are included at the end of each story. These ensure that children are not only able to read the text, but also find meaning in the stories.

The smallest Billy Goat Gruff was so afraid that he started to shake. “Do not munch me up for dinner!” he cried. “I am too small to make a good dinner for a big troll like you. A much bigger billy goat will come by in a little while.”

“Hmm, you are quite small,” muttered the troll, rubbing his chin and looking at the next goat. As he did so, the smallest Billy Goat Gruff slipped quickly across the planks.

What’s in the book? Where do the goats live? Why do the goats want to cross the bridge? Where does the troll land after the goat has butted him?

What do you think? Is the smallest Billy Goat Gruff brave? How does the troll feel at the end of the story?

When he had finished his dinner, the fox licked his lips. “Mmmm, that was good,” he said. “Have you finished?” he added, looking at the stork’s plate.

“My bill is too long and pointed for this big, flat plate,” the stork explained. She was still very hungry, and it made her angry when the fox quickly ate all the food she had left as well.

Character Review Choose a character in this book to think about: What is their name? Do you know where they live? Describe what they look like. What do they do in the story? Are they good or bad? Why? Do you like them? Why? What other things would you like to know about them?
