JOHNSON & WALES UNIVERSITY

FOUNDATIONS ANNUAL REPORT 2014–2015

CHANCELLOR’S MESSAGE FOUNDATIONS Dear Friends, In “Walden”, Henry David Thoreau wrote, “If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.” Through the work of our most recent strategic planning initiative, FOCUS 2011, and our current effort, 2017: The Centennial Plan, Johnson & Wales has heeded Thoreau’s advice. Indeed, we continue to build castles in the air — ambitious but achievable goals regarding our investments in student experience, potential, engagement and career opportunities and in the professional lives of our faculty. In each of those planning processes, though, we were very deliberate to include a course of action to strengthen and solidify those components of the enterprise that provide the base of support for those ambitions. I’m talking about our foundation — the facilities and infrastructure, reputation, and human and financial resources required to make those goals attainable.

This includes the detailed work of developing governance structures that help fulfill our mission and the nurturing of our most precious resource — our faculty and staff. It includes an investment in an information technology network that advances our academic programs and gives employees the best tools to perform at peak levels. It means laying the groundwork for a comprehensive campaign to raise critical funds and implementing a strategy to increase our profile among prospective students and their families. I’m proud to report that the university’s foundation is strong and getting stronger. I hope you enjoy the stories that follow, illustrating Johnson & Wales University’s profound commitment to such an important element of our continuing progress and success. Sincerely,

John J. Bowen ‘77 Chancellor

INVESTING IN OUR

FOUNDATIONS

CRITICAL TO INSTITUTIONAL SUCCESS

“They were the foundations upon which the towers would stand, or to put it another way, they were the part of the bridge nobody would ever see and the part upon which everything depended.” — David McCullough

Exterior, Cuisinart Center for Culinary Excellence, Providence Campus

More than 130 years ago, one of the great architectural and technological feats in our history took place when the Brooklyn Bridge was constructed over the East River in New York, connecting Manhattan with Brooklyn. Among breakthrough contributions to construction science, architects of the bridge paid special attention to the design of one key element — its foundation.

still there, beneath the towers, beneath the river, exactly where he calculated they ought to be.” Though often unseen and rarely even acknowledged beyond an expectation of existence, foundations are crucial components of most successful enterprises, be they organizations or buildings or communities.

“The two giant pneumatic caissons were his supreme contribution, however, and a test of everything that

In a university setting, foundations take different forms — facilities, infrastructure, resource support, reputation. Strong foundations underpin the success of mission critical components of the enterprise — providing support for faculty to teach and research and for students to learn and engage. Without a proper foundation, goals for student success are unachievable.

was in him. They were the foundations upon which the towers would stand, or to put it another way, they were the part of the bridge nobody would ever see and the part upon which everything depended. And they are

What follows are three stories of how Johnson & Wales University is investing in its foundation, further strengthening the university’s status as a recognized leader in higher education.

Here is how the astute David McCullough described the approach of Washington Roebling, chief architect of the Brooklyn Bridge, in his essay “The Builders” in the book “Brave Companions”:

“Our intention is to ensure that every JWU student will have an opportunity to attend a class in this building.” Robin Krakowsky ’88, ’08 Ed.D. Denver Campus president

NEW

A more than $30-million campus renovation project took center stage as the Denver Campus began full upgrades to Centennial and Founders halls.

TRANSFORMING THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE

Originally built in 1929 as a residence hall, the Founders Hall renovation transformed the structure from an office building into modern housing for students.

and aged brick. Pipes from the original organ, as well as original seats, will be installed at the main entry. A skylight was brought back to life. Natural light bathes gathering areas through the spacious windows in nearly every corner, classroom and office — with spectacular views of downtown and the mountains on upper floors.

“The scientific man does not aim at an immediate result. He does not expect that his advanced ideas will be readily taken up. His work is like that of the planter — for the future. His duty is to lay the foundation for those who are to come, and point the way.”

Shuttered for more than 30 years, the interior restoration of historic Centennial Hall (formerly Treat Hall) preserved the grandeur of the building’s architectural history, while refurbishing structural elements to meet modern building requirements.

“Our intention is to ensure that every JWU student, regardless of major, will have an opportunity to attend a class in this building at some point during his or her student career here,” says Robin Krakowsky ’88, ’08 Ed.D., Denver Campus president. “The building is that special.”

Centennial Hall is now the centerpiece of academic and student life at the Denver Campus. The building’s interior features brand new classrooms, a café, faculty and administrative offices, a great hall for events, meeting rooms, expansive student activity spaces, and multiple levels of student services and facilities.

“JWU doesn’t want Centennial Hall to just be a landmark,” says Kendra Gibbs ’18. “The university wants us to become part of it and create our own traditions and values in this new place.”

Already on the National Register of Historic Places, Centennial Hall will receive Historic Denver’s 2015 Community Preservation Award this year.

NEW FACILITIES “Education is a human right with immense power to transform. On its foundation rest the cornerstones of freedom, democracy and sustainable human development.” — Kofi Annan

Across the country, the Providence Campus broke ground this year for a new academic building. The $40-million project will result in a brand new, 71,000-square-foot building spanning three stories that will house the School of Engineering & Design and the College of Arts & Sciences biology program, plus large laboratories and classrooms, gathering spaces for collaborative work and much more.

“The broadening of our program offering,” he says, “along with these new facilities supports us in our goal to increase our student population and attract highly talented faculty over the next few years.”

Set to open in fall 2016, the building represents the future of JWU as it grows its offerings in the arts and sciences, technology, and engineering.

“The building allows for new beginnings and new endings for JWU and our students,” remarks Angela Renaud, Ed.D., dean of the John Hazen White College of Arts & Sciences. “Our programs will attract fresh pools of students which will in turn prepare them for a variety

The expansive area and state-of-the-art labs — including those in innovation, robotics, design and network simulation — will enable students to experience and apply the latest tools and techniques of the engineering and design industry, says Frank Tweedie, dean of the School of Engineering & Design. “There should be a sympathy with freedom, a desire to give it scope, founded not upon visionary ideas, but upon the long experience of many generations within the shores of this happy isle, that in freedom you lay the firmest foundations both of loyalty and order.”

ENHANCED

RESOURCES SECURING THE FUTURE

— William E. Gladstone

Exterior detail, Centennial Hall, Denver Campus

JWU’s Board of Trustees and senior leaders agree that financial resources and relationships are vital to sustaining not only the quality and relevance of the JWU experience, and students’ access to it, but also the university’s status as an educational innovator. Accordingly, these leaders are laying the groundwork for “a comprehensive fundraising campaign that will both attract support for current and anticipated capital and programmatic needs and provide opportunities for the university to purposefully and permanently engage or re-engage alumni, friends and community members in the life of the university,” says Joseph L. Staley, vice chancellor for resource development.

With the encouragement and collaboration of alumni, parents, students and volunteers, Resource Development personnel are increasing their visibility and focusing their efforts on pursuing and meeting the campaign’s ambitious financial and relationship-building goals through gifts, sponsorships and grants. They are also accelerating outreach to alumni and other constituents and will continue to invite those individuals and organizations to take a fresh look at JWU and the extraordinary advantages it provides to students, graduates, industries and communities.

At this campaign planning stage, JWU is recruiting a campaign steering committee, developing an identity and cases for support, ensuring internal preparedness, and securing early gifts and pledges to build a base for continued support over the next five to seven years. The campaign’s success will be determined by the level of commitment from trustees, alumni, parents, friends and all others who are part of the JWU family.

STRENGTHENED

REPUTATION BUILDING AWARENESS, CHANGING PERCEPTIONS

Early construction, New Academic Building, Providence Campus

As the saying goes, good things come to those who wait. But in today’s fast-paced world, why should students have to wait for tomorrow if their career experience can happen today? Last spring, JWU embarked on a strategic identity program to ensure that it is well positioned in an increasingly competitive higher education marketplace for years to come. A new tagline, “Experience Your Future Now,” speaks to JWU’s innovative educational model and expresses the Johnson & Wales difference. “The message speaks to our historic strengths in experiential education and to our evolving educational programs that inspire professional success and lifelong

personal and intellectual growth,” explains Doug Whiting, vice president of communications. “Students here have access to multiple experiences — internships, club leadership, international competitions, study abroad. Combined with the experiential focus of our academic programs, JWU is a leader in giving students career experience long before they graduate.” “Experience Your Future Now” has already appeared on billboards in Providence, North Miami, Denver and Charlotte, and aired on radio stations throughout the spring. The message also is running on Spotify, numerous online platforms and social media. This fall, a new television commercial debuted in all four markets.

JWU partnered with the international marketing firm Forge Worldwide of Boston for the branding initiative. For 18 months, extensive research and universitywide conversations led to the development of a positioning strategy, which closely aligns with 2017: The Centennial Plan, and resulted in a new tagline, refreshed messaging and creative executions that tell the story of JWU’s ongoing transformation.

Launching this fall on the North Miami Campus, the TALENT ADVANCEMENT PROGRAM (TAP) is providing students who have demonstrated need the resources and support to be successful for university life as self-directed learners. Approximately 150 firstyear students are part of the inaugural program, which includes part-time status for the first term, and a course designed to foster academic, personal, and professional success. Following completion of the first term, TAP students will transition to full-time status and be eligible for an annual monetary incentive as the result of a successful start. Students will work with staff and faculty through additional personalized programming, dedicated advising and ongoing support through graduation….In June, JWU hosted a White Coat Ceremony for its inaugural class of 23 students pursuing a MASTER OF SCIENCE IN PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT STUDIES. The White Coat Ceremony signifies the completion of the physician assistant students’ didactic year of study as they begin their clinical rotations in hospitals, doctors’ offices, community health centers and other sites of inpatient and outpatient care. ….JWU was honored with the prestigious WILLIAM M. BURKE PRESIDENTIAL AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION. Presented by the National Society for Experiential Education, and funded by The Washington Center for Academic Internships and Seminars, the award recognizes an institution that has made significant contributions to experiential education. REVIEW STUDENT LIFE

“I have not seen a student organization like this, ever. They are so committed.” — Jean Holt, M.S. Associate Professor of Finance

“I have not seen a student organization like this, ever,” says Jean Holt, associate professor of finance. “They are so committed.” She is talking about the FINANCE AND INVESTMENT ACADEMY (FIA), of which she is a faculty advisor. Due to their efforts, real-money investing will become a part of a Johnson & Wales undergraduate education. The group spearheaded an effort to establish a student-managed investment fund, winning the support of the JWU Board of Trustees Investment Committee. “We’re the type of people [who] want to hopefully leave our mark on a place,” says Devin Rainone ’15, outgoing president of the FIA. He, along with two former FIA members, Marquis Cooper ’14 and Benjamin Kantor ’15, and current student Tiffany J. Aubee ’17, made their case to the Investment Committee and received an allotment from JWU’s

endowment for FIA investment. “I think our degree will become much stronger in the long run because of these kinds of projects,” says Kantor, who now works for Ernst & Young in Chicago….Official WILDCAT STATUES were unveiled at all four JWU campuses. Designed and sculpted by artist Mike Fields, the massive bronze representations of JWU’s Wildcat Way (Pride, Courage, Character, Community) measure more than

15 feet tall by 11 feet long and quickly became photo and gathering destinations for students, families and visitors…. As of this fall, across all campuses, Residential Life is piloting PET-FRIENDLY communities in select residence halls for students who (once they meet requirements) can live with their pet on campus…. Some 4,700 students have participated in GREEN DOT, a strategy to reduce the rates of power-based personal violence in the JWU community through inspiration, personal connection and skill building around bystander behaviors….Providence is pretty serious about its pizza, and JWU’S AD TEAM is pretty serious about competing. So when the team starting cooking up ideas for this year’s National Round client, Pizza Hut, winning almost seemed as easy as (pizza) pie! In the end, the Ad Team secured second place at the National Student Advertising Competition — the team’s best finish in program history. JWU’s Ad Team has won the district competition six out of the last seven years. At the national level, it took fourth in 2014 and 2013, and third in 2012 and 2011….JWU STUDENTATHLETES continue to shine a bright light on Johnson & Wales. Just this past year, Wildcats won conference championships; the softball team won the first ever NCAA game in any JWU women’s sport; and new programs debuted. In addition, JWU celebrated coaches of the year, rookies of the year, conference players of the year, all-region selections and individual national qualifiers. For the second year in a row, Providence Campus Wrestling Captain Michael Ferinde ’15 was named an NCAA All-American.

REVIEW SUPPORT FOR JWU WEGMANS FOOD MARKET INC. has pledged $250,000 in scholarships over the next five years to eligible fulltime students enrolled in the JWU College of Culinary Arts in Providence. The generous gift will support students pursuing a career in the food service industry…. MARY L. ERWIN SIMPSON ’09, owner of MadamChef Couture International, established the Madam Chef Scholarship to support students studying culinary arts, fashion and entrepreneurship. She is the first Charlotte Campus graduate to create a scholarship with JWU since the campus opened 11 years ago. In the spring, Simpson spoke to seniors and alumni about the importance of being philanthropic and giving back to their alma mater….As a student-athlete in the late 1990s on the North Miami Campus, RUDOLPH POINDEXTER ’02 took advantage of every opportunity, joining campus organizations, immersing himself in classwork and satisfying his passions on the basketball court. A year ago, that enthusiasm for his Johnson & Wales experience spurred him to reinvest in the university by making a gift that combined scholarship support for a basketball player and funds for the team. “I owe so much to JWU,” he told JWU Magazine. “It is only fitting that I give back a portion of the invaluable educational and life experiences that are part of being a member of the JWU family.”…Culinary and hospitality majors in North Miami are the beneficiaries of new, increased scholarship support from the CULINARY AND HOSPITALITY EDUCATION FOUNDATION (C.H.E.F.). Since 2007, the foundation has contributed $121,000 to JWU for scholarships for Florida-area students….For years, Denver-based Service Systems Associates (SSA) has maintained a reputation as a top-rated provider of visitor services in the zoo, aquarium and cultural attractions industry. Since 2012, SSA founder and board chairman Kevin McNicholas and his family also have made their mark in the world of philanthropy through the T. KEVIN MCNICHOLAS FOUNDATION. Students at JWU’s Denver Campus have reaped the benefits of that philanthropy as recipients of scholarship support to pursue studies in culinary arts.
