PROGRAM BENEFITS

The MA in Teaching Writing Program helps teachers at all levels, K-University, in all disciplines, learn proven, practical ways to teach writing to their students, studying theories and best practices on the teaching of writing that they can take directly into their classroom and also share with their colleagues, as they simultaneously pursue their own writing in an exciting and supportive » Nine-course (36 credit-hour equivalency) completed online with a low residency requirement. » Flexible, asynchronous courses allow participants to work on a schedule that best suits their situation and needs. » At the seven-to-ten day residency, teachers will share their own teaching and writing with fellow teachers and will join with students, faculty, and guest writers and teachers in the MA in Writing and the MA in Science Writing programs, as part of the Summer Hopkins Conference on Craft, a decade-old event that has visited Italy, Maine, Washington, DC, Baltimore, Annapolis and the Shenandoah National Park.

» One course in Teaching Writing: Theory, Practice, and Craft » Two courses from the Genre Group (Creative Writing, Narrative, Poetry, Literary Nonfiction and Scientific Texts, etc.) » One course from the Reading and Literature Group (Reading Like a Writer, Reading Multicultural Texts, Using Writing to Teach Reading, etc.) » One 1–2 week onsite Residency course. » Three electives (Courses currently being

Along with the MA Degree in Teaching Writing, we also offer a five-course Graduate Certificate. Teachers may also apply as a special student to take only one or two courses.
