National Honors for Nursing Services John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek has again been honored for excellence in nursing services and quality nursing care, earning the designation as a Magnet® hospital for another four years. Magnet recognition is the highest level of recognition a health care organization can receive from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association. John Muir Health’s Concord and Walnut Creek medical centers are both Magnet-recognized for nursing care, two of just six hospitals in Northern California and two of fewer than 400 in the world.

National Achievement Awards:

Care of Stroke, Heart Attack and Heart Failure John Muir Health’s Concord and Walnut Creek medical centers recently earned the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s “Get With The Guidelines” Stroke and Heart Failure Gold Plus Achievement Awards. Young Adults in Recovery Our new program helps 20-somethings find their way without drugs and alcohol If you think drug abuse isn’t a part of your local landscape, think again. Addiction to prescription drugs and even heroin is affecting young people at shockingly high rates throughout our communities. “It’s hitting the high-income areas,” says Nina Ferraris, director of John Muir Health’s Drug and Alcohol Addiction Recovery Services. “We’re seeing heroin addiction in areas where we’ve never seen it before.” Even high-achieving students are becoming victims of addiction, Ferraris emphasizes. In some cases, young people take drugs like Ritalin and Adderall to boost their academic performance. Others take highly addictive opiates such as Oxycontin, sometimes to counteract the effects of the “study drugs,” and when they need more of the prescription opiates than they can get, they sometimes buy heroin on the street. In response to the problem, John Muir Health is offering a new program called More Care. Designed as a transition from residential and outpatient treatment to day-to-day living, the eight-week, afternoon program speaks directly to the challenges of young adults ages 18 to 30. “We want to build a community of young people who are working on their recovery and still having fun,”

4

johnmuirhealth.com

says Ferraris, pointing out that this age group has a higher relapse rate than others, partly because drinking and doing drugs are a part of many young people’s social scene. With that in mind, More Care provides a wide range of therapy activities, including art and music, and will offer outings that participants choose, such as trips to the movies and bowling. Note: Patients do not need a doctor’s referral, but the program does require insurance preapproval. “We want the young people to take actions that promote their healthy growth,” says Ferraris. ”Our program offers hope that they’ll never relapse again.”

WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY FAQS Get answers to common concerns from Dr. Paul Cirangle, medical director of John Muir Health’s Weight Loss Surgery Program

GO|

For a schedule and location of our free Weight Loss Surgery

informational seminars, visit johnmuirhealth. com/classes or call (800) 710-6111.

Q: Who should consider weight loss surgery? Cirangle: People who have a body mass index over 30, often with additional major health problems, and who have been unsuccessful at losing weight with diets and exercise programs. Q: What are the benefits of weight loss surgery? Cirangle: Dramatic—in terms of health and quality of life. Patients often lose 100 or more pounds in about 12 months. Weight loss surgery can improve or resolve many serious health conditions such as diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, joint pain and high cholesterol. Patients who undergo surgery to lose weight have a better quality of life, researchers say. In fact, the evidence shows that weight loss surgery reduces mortality and extends life expectancy in most people.

Did you know that obesity and certain related conditions are leading causes of preventable deaths in the United States? Each year, obesity may be the culprit in 300,000 deaths, according to the U.S. surgeon general’s estimates. Serious medical conditions such as heart disease and high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea and stroke can be directly related to obesity. The good news: John Muir Health has a comprehensive Weight Loss Surgery Program to help people beat obesity and improve their quality of life.

Q: Does the surgery require a long recovery time? Cirangle: At John Muir Health, weight loss surgery is performed laparoscopically through very small incisions [less than a half-inch]; many of our patients require only an overnight stay in the hospital. Typically, pain is minimal, and recovery is usually quick. Some procedures such as the Lap-Band can be done as an outpatient [same-day] procedure. Those patients should be able to return to normal activity within one week. Q: If I am interested in having weight loss surgery, how do I get started? Cirangle: John Muir Health holds free informational seminars several times each month. While you’re there, you’ll hear about the different options and can ask a weight loss surgeon questions regarding the surgery.

Navigating Health Care

Are You Ready for Open Enrollment? The best way to choose the perfect health plan begins with finding the perfect doctor 1. There’s a reason it’s called “primary care.” The open enrollment period is the time when you can make changes in your health plan that you may have been considering. The best place to start is with your primary care doctor—and now is the time to find one who’s in sync with your needs. Our doctors are dedicated to working together with you so that you can be your healthiest. 2. Get the patient-doctor relationship you deserve. With more than 270 primary care doctors in the East Bay, we’re confident we have the right doctor for you and your family. In fact, according to our nationally standardized patient satisfaction survey, 9 out of 10 of our patients would recommend their doctor to someone else. That someone else could be you. 3. Choose the right plan today for a healthy tomorrow. During open enrollment, you have the chance to choose a health insurance plan that meets your family’s needs. Once you’ve found the doctor at John Muir Health you like, the next step is to select a health plan that gives you access to that doctor and the full range of John Muir Health services and facilities including hospitals, Urgent Care Centers and imaging services. Visit our Health Plan Enrollment Resource Center at johnmuirhealth.com/choose to find out more about which health plans will allow you to access doctors and services at John Muir Health.

Seniors’ Guide

Exercise Is Good Medicine Workouts can be an aid for more than heart disease and diabetes

By now, you’ve probably heard that physical activity can be a powerful defense against heart disease and diabetes. But did you know it can also help fend off or manage a host of other health problems? Experts recommend 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity and two strength-training workouts each week to most seniors and adults. Brisk walking is an easy way to fulfill the first part, but doing a variety of activities can help keep you motivated and reduce your injury risk. If you have a chronic condition, consult your doctor before starting a new program. For more details about how your efforts might pay off in some unexpected ways, read on.

Seniors’ Guide

> Arthritis Are you among 3 in 5 Californians with arthritis who walk less than 90 minutes a week? If you need motivation to lace up your walking shoes, know that walking can help reduce symptoms, improve physical function and decrease disability, according to researchers. To improve your range of motion, try flexibility exercises. For pain relief, pump some iron. One study showed regular strength training led to, on average, a 43 percent reduction in pain and a 44 percent improvement in physical movement in patients with knee osteoarthritis. If symptoms flare up, modify your routine—try water aerobics or temporarily reduce your workout time.

> Osteoporosis Our bone mass decreases as we age, increasing our risk for weak, brittle bones that are characteristic of osteoporosis. Menopausal women experience bone loss at a particularly swift rate. The good news is you can slow this process by getting enough calcium and vitamin D and doing weight-bearing exercises three

to four times a week. Weight training, walking, hiking, jogging, stair climbing, tennis and dancing are just a few of the activities that can help build bone density. To improve your balance, try tai chi; exercises such as walking backward or sideways, or coming to standing from a sitting position, can also help prevent falls.

> Stroke The more you exercise, the more you can benefit. Research shows that people who are moderately active have a 20 percent lower risk of stroke than those who are less active; highly active individuals have a 27 percent lower risk of stroke. What’s the bottom line? Get moving for at least 150 minutes a week to reduce your risk factors for stroke, including obesity; high cholesterol; and high blood pressure, the No. 1 cause of stroke.

More research is needed to understand the link between physical activity and the risk of Alzheimer’s disease—a form of dementia affecting memory, thinking and behavior—but so far, results have been encouraging. Some studies have shown active older adults were less likely to experience Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia than their less active peers. Other studies associate physical activity with improvements in certain mental functions, like memory, planning, scheduling and multitasking. In animals, exercise has been shown to help stimulate new connections in the brain, which help it take care of its various tasks more efficiently. Although scientists can’t say for sure that exercise protects against Alzheimer’s, there’s plenty to gain by becoming more active.
