Port Augusta The historic city of Port Augusta offers plenty of great attractions and serves as the perfect base from which to explore the Flinders Ranges and South Australian Outback. Situated on the Spencer Gulf, Port Augusta was once a central meeting place for different Aboriginal tribes to trade goods and knowledge. In more recent times it has forged a reputation as a vital rail link for a range of freight routes. To appreciate the rail terrain, visitors can embark on a tour aboard a restored steam engine via the Pichi Richi Railway through the gorgeous Flinders Ranges. With a population of around 14,000 people, visitors can enjoy great shopping and dining as well as many varied attractions. Meander through the streetscapes of Port Augusta keeping your eyes peeled for public art by way of murals, mosaic benches and sculptures. The Port Augusta Visitor Information Centre is located at the Wadlata Outback Centre on Flinders Terrace. Be sure to check out Wadlata’s self-guided walk ‘Tunnel of Time’ which showcases the region’s fascinating history, from prehistoric times to Aboriginal Dreaming to tales of early exploration. The centre showcases a rotating calendar of arts and cultural events as well as exhibitions to suit a range of tastes. The Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden is situated on a sprawling 250 hectares and boasts extensive walking tracks. Pick up a self-guided tour brochure from the visitor information centre to navigate your way through the arid native plantings. Visitors can book a scenic flight to explore the natural surrounds or embark on a 4x4 adventure. There’s also plenty of bushwalking options to get right amongst nature. Don’t miss a guided tour of the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) to understand how this essential healthcare provider services Port Augusta and the surrounding region. There is much to be discovered about the history of the city as a traditional meeting place for Aboriginal people which later grew to be a major port and railway hub supporting the outback areas and the pastoral industry. The multi award winning, Wadlata Outback Centre, will share many interactive and interpretive stories with you. It is also the starting point for the Heritage Walk through the central business district which showcases the many historic buildings and features of Port Augusta. Discover the beauty of Port Augusta by walking or riding along the coastal path which meanders along the shores of the Spencer Gulf where you will enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of the stunning scenery. The walk takes you to another of the region’s premier attractions, the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden - and don’t be surprised if you see a dolphin or two on the way.

There are many sporting clubs and water activities to be enjoyed. Take a swim in the gulf or local swimming pool, join in the local lawn bowls or have a game of golf and enjoy first class facilities. Local sporting clubs operate all year round and provide meals and entertainment during their relevant seasons.

WADLATA OUTBACK CENTRE The Wadlata Outback Centre is an award-winning major tourism attraction and welcomes tens of thousands of visitors. Be sure to take a self-guided tour through Wadlata’s, ‘Tunnel of Time’, before or after visiting the Flinders Ranges & Outback as it will give you a better understanding of how it evolved and makes you want to get out there and enjoy it for yourself. You will be transported back to where the dinosaurs roamed the land, be introduced to the people who first owned, explored and settled the land and those who still live there today. The Wadlata’s ‘Tunnel of Time’ is quite impressive. Once inside the first thing you will see is Max, the giant Ripper Lizard. Creep through his giant jaws to be transported back to the creation of the Flinders Ranges and Outback.

WADLATA INFORMATION CENTRE Wadlata is also the regions award winning accredited Visitor Information Centre, so definitely make this centre your first stop before starting your Flinders Ranges & Outback experience. Here you will be able to book a 4WD tour, National Park entry & camping, Desert Parks Passes, a ride on the Pichi Richi Steam Train and much more. The staff will make sure you leave with all the tourist information for your trip ahead. The gift shop has a large selection of Australian Made gifts and the Outback Tuckerbox makes a great coffee and the Quandong cheesecake and slice are irresistible.

THE AUSTRALIAN ARID LANDS BOTANIC GARDEN The Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden is a must visit place. Great for coffee and cake and to learn about the local native plants and view native birds. The Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden demonstrates that Australia’s harsh desert landscape is anything other than barren and lifeless. The Research Centre’s interactive exhibits and walking tours tell of the native plants and animals in the region. The garden covers over 250 hectares and around 12 km of walking tracks have been established to allow you to view the existing and introduced arid native plants. It is free to inspect the garden. You can pick up a self-guided tour brochure from the Visitor Centre to learn more about the arid land plants yourself or you can join a guided tour with an experienced tour guide (a charge will apply) which are available most weekdays at 10.00am. The Garden opens at 7.30am and closes at sundown, allowing time to view the birds at their best. The visitor centre is open Monday to Friday 9.00am-5.00pm and Saturday & Sunday 10.00am-4.00pm.

While you’re in the The Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden, wander to the Matthew Flinders Lookout. You’ll find yourself looking across the beautiful rivulets and waterways over the gulf and Flinders Ranges.

ROYAL FLYING DOCTOR SERVICE Since 1928, the Royal Flying Doctor Service has been servicing the needs of those living in remote Australia. The base is in Port Augusta, and the service has hundreds of staff in training to continue this crucial work into the future. Head to their website to find out more about the history and work of the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the locations of their museum.

YARTA PURTLI CULTURAL CENTRE Situated in the old Magistrates Court, Yarta Purtli is Port Augusta’s arts and cultural hub. Visitors are welcome to join and meet the artists. The Cultural Centre supports and encourages community and individual participation in all facets of the arts and culture. ‘Yarta Purtli’ is a Nukunu word meaning ‘Place of the Stars’. Drop in and get talking with one of their helpful staff. It will connect you to the history and significance of Curdnatta (Port Augusta) to the first nation people. The Cultural Centre is a gallery that hosts a variety of events and artists’ workshops including local and touring shows, artist talks, and festivals. Monday to Friday 10am - 4pm. Admission is free when exhibitions are showing. Located at 6 Beauchamp Lane.

THE PLATFORM ART GALLERY Established in 1965, the Curdnatta Art Group hosts talented local volunteer artists who produce an wide range of high-quality art products including paintings, pastels, pottery, photography, gifts, marbled fabric, scarves, quilts, hand knits, millinery embroidery, creative writing and DVD’s. Wednesday & Saturday 10.00am - 12.00pm, Thursday & Friday 10.00am - 2.00pm. Entry by donation. Located at the Port Augusta Railway Station, 2 Stirling Road.

BLANCHE HARBOUR AQUATIC RESERVE Discover this very special area which is one of the few places on earth where the desert literally meets the sea. Many of the plants and animals found here characterise the Australian Outback and yet they are living within meters of true marine species. 23km’s down the Shack Road this picturesque place is a lovely picnic area.

RSL SUB-BRANCH MILITARY MEMORABILIA MUSEUM

THE WAVE SKATE AND BMX PARK

The RSL Military Museum boasts the largest display of war memorabilia of its type in Regional South Australia. From the Boar War, through both World Wars and to Australia’s most recent conflicts, the museum showcases photos, memorabilia and artefacts.

Port Augusta has a world class skate & BMX park built by one of the world’s leading skate park builders. The Wave skate park is a creative skate park, showcasing an unreal wave looking half-pipe. A great opportunity to get out of the car and mix with the locals. Suitable for all levels of experience. Located on El Alamein Road.

Here you can experience a Leopard Tank up close. The tank can be viewed at anytime, but it would be well-worth timing it in with a visit. Located at 15 Fulham Road. Monday 5pm, Tuesday to Friday 4pm, Closed Saturday & Sunday. Group bookings by prior arrangement. A donation is appreciated.

SWIMMING The best swimming beaches are: On the eastern foreshore, between the Oasis Apartments and the bridge; swimming pontoons by the jetty; adjacent to the Yacht Club; west side between the bridge and the Augusta Hotel; between the new bridge and old bridge. The Ryan Mitchell Swim Centre is Port Augusta’s community pool and recreation facility, designed to suit all ages. There is a 50m 5 lane pool,an intermediate pool, a covered wading pool for the little ones and a fun new splash park. Surrounded by lawn, trees and shade sails, as well as an onsite canteen it is the perfect place to relax on those warmer days. Open October - April each year. Closed rest of the year.

MARKETS The Westside Markets are held on the first Sunday of the month between 8.30am and 12.30pm at the Church hall on the corner of Mildred & Hartley Street. The market always has an excellent range of stall holders. The Stirling North Markets are held on the third Saturday of the month between 9am and1pm at the Stirling North Progress Hall, Quorn Road.

HERITAGE WALK The Heritage Walk runs along the shoreline, go for a walk, run or cycle. It is wheelchair friendly and dog friendly. If you’re up for a long walk, the entire stretch lasts 6.4km. Keep your eye out for dolphins!

MURAL ON THE HILL This very special mural display is made up of 2,500 handmade and painted tiles and tells the story of Port Augusta in a very artistic, interpretive way. The story of Port Augusta from the Aboriginal Dreaming, European settlement to the present day, is interpreted as, ‘Our Story, Our Pride’. Located on the corner of Flinders Terrace and Augusta Highway All Saints Church corner Wall.

FORESHORE Spend some time at our beautiful foreshore areas, equipped with excellent BBQ facilities and a modern playground suitable for all ages and a self-cleaning toilet system. Walking tracks can take you along the southern shores of the Gulf, swimming pontoons, public toilets and a wash-down shower for beachgoers - and a basketball and netball half-court.

Surrounded by lovely gardens, the water tower was built in 1882 to provide a reserve water supply for the residents of Port Augusta West. Climb the four flights of steps to experience sweeping 360 degree panoramic views of Port Augusta, the Flinders Ranges, Baxter Ranges, the salt pans and the Outback landscape to the north. With the great views south along Spencer Gulf it is a great place to relax and take photos. Enjoy the skate park across the road while having a BBQ or picnic lunch.

PORT AUGUSTA GOLF CLUB With the breathtaking Flinders Ranges making a spectacular backdrop, the Port Augusta golf course is considered one of the best country courses in northern South Australia. The golf course features 18 fully grassed greens and fairways and a licensed Club. Visitors are welcomed at any time. Limited golf club hire and buggies are available from the club house, but you can also hire equipment from the Standpipe Gulf Motor Inn. The Club is open every day from 8.00am - 4.00pm. History & Industry Founded at the top of the Spencer Gulf, Port Augusta is known as the crossroads of Australia. Port Augusta has a long history as a port and railway transport hub, which continues today through its rail connections as a freight route to the north, south, east and west of Australia. The original owners of this land are the Barngarla and Nukunu people. Historically, Port Augusta was a central place for Indigenous people to meet and trade goods and knowledge. Port Augusta was known as Curdnatta – Sandy Place.

The earliest European settlers came in the 1850’s for pastoral land leases. Wool, wheat and livestock exports were sent all around Australia and back to London. Cameleers shifted goods through the arid terrain. As wheat and pastoral leases drew further north, major railway lines were built to connect the far reaches of the country. In 1878, the construction of a new railway line commenced and Port Augusta became the southern terminal of a north-south cross-continental railway that stretches all the way to Darwin. Port Augusta is a major transport hub with road and rail taking over from sailing ships and camel trains. These days Port Augusta is a major regional service centre for outback South Australia – including the mining and resource industry, a major transport hub and is fast becoming a regional hub for Renewable Energy. In 1954, Port Augusta completed the Playford A Power Station. Using coal from Leigh Creek and Telford Cut, it provided energy for South Australia without having to import sources from interstate. In recent years, Port Augusta is taking steps towards becoming a green energy city, following the closure of its coal-fired power station in 2016. Massive investments in solar power have propelled Port Augusta forward as a frontrunner in transitioning to renewable energy. The Bungala solar farm was completed in 2020 and is operated by Enel Green Power. Sundrop Farms is also assisting Port Augusta to become a green energy city by using a 115 metre solar tower surrounded by 23,000 mirrors to grow thousands of kilograms of tomatoes using desalinated water from the Gulf in its four 10 acre greenhouses. That’s enough truss tomatoes to supply Coles supermarkets all over Australia! Tourism is also a significant industry for Port Augusta. Placed on the calm Spencer Gulf Water, its close proximity to the Flinders Ranges and national parks, and its two major tourist attractions, the Wadlata Outback Centre and the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden, make it an ideal location for travellers.

Flinders Ranges & Outback If you love nature, head to the Flinders Ranges for some fantastic bush walking, mountain biking, camping, 4WD, rock climbing and abseiling adventures. The Flinders Ranges and Outback region features the majestic natural amphitheatre of Ikara Wilpena Pound, a lost world located inside a giant stone crater. Here adventurers can go driving into the deep outback and spend time exploring South Australia’s legendary desert tracks. Within easy reach of Port Augusta, Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park is a popular destination for bushwalking and the extensive network of bushwalking trails gives visitors the opportunity to experience the dramatic scenery, spectacular geological landforms and native wildlife of the Flinders Ranges. There are many walks and hikes within the park that cater for all ages and levels of fitness, varying in length and difficulty. You can collect maps, brochures and information on the walking trails from the Ikara Wilpena Visitor Centre. Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park also has fantastic mountain biking opportunities for visitors. The Mawson Trail and several roads provide access to some of the most stunning scenery in the park. For a great cycling experience, the long distance cycling trail, the Mawson Trail, traverses the park using many fire access trails that offer spectacular views. The Mawson Trail is accessible from Ikara Wilpena, Yanyanna and Trezona.

The park also contains sections of the Flinders Ranges by bike loop. Contact the Visitor Centre for information on the cycle loop. There are plenty of 4WD adventures to be had in and around Port Augusta. You can take part in one of the guided tours available or take a self-guided tour. Explore areas like the Bunyeroo Valley, Brachina Gorge, Mount Jacob Back Track, Mount Gill Track, Nuccaleena Ruins, Lake Frome, Ikara Wilpena Pound, just to name a few. Visit www.parks.sa.gov.au or the Wadlata Information Centre to plan your trip, for maps and park entry passes. For an introduction to the Flinders Ranges, take a drive through Horrocks pass to Wilmington visiting Hancocks Lookout on the way. Just out of town on the southern side is the road to Alligator Gorge, an enchanting walk through an ancient riverbed canyon. You will need to buy a pass from Wadlata (or online) but this has to be the best value money can buy. Be careful not to feed the local alligators. Then take the drive up to Quorn, a once thriving railway town, stuck in time and the scene of many Australian movies. There are many funky café’s and historical buildings including the old railway building. Have a meal at any one of the eateries and head back to Port Augusta through the Pichi Richi Pass.

Day Trips PICHI RICHI RAILWAY The Pichi Richi railway is a highlight. This beautiful old steam train travels from Port Augusta to Quorn and back. This is one of the prettiest trips through the Flinders Ranges. The historic Pichi Richi Railway with its narrow gauge rail line showcases transport in a by-gone era. Beautifully restored steam engines take passengers on a memorable journey through the stunning Flinders Ranges through the Pichi Richi Pass via Woolshed flat with trains departing both Quorn and Port Augusta. Powered either by steam or historic diesel engines, depending on the season, the carriages showcase immaculately restored timber-body carriages that are up to 115 years old.

LAKE HART Lake Hart is a must stop visit to see one of the most spectacular salt lakes on the Stuart Highway. It is important to note that Lake Hart is a viewing area only. Visitors can access the picnic area, however it is prohibited to access the lake. The salt lake is dried out and has a crunchy surface which is vividly white and the beautiful salt crystals glisten in the sunlight. Lake Hart is about 220kms north of Port Augusta.

NATIONAL PARKS It is important to note that you need to purchase National Park Entry and Camping Permits and Desert Park Passes to some of the most amazing areas of the Flinders Ranges & Outback Region. You can book online or purchase them from the Wadlata Information Centre at 41 Flinders Terrace, Port Augusta.

WALKING TRAILS Devil’s Peak Summit Climb – Richman Valley Road via Quorn Dutchmans Stern Hiking Trail – 51km from Port Augusta Mount Brown Climb – 964m altitude – via Richman Valley Road – approx. 50km from Port Augusta Mount Remarkable National Park – 50km south of Port Augusta. Walking trails starting from Mambray Creek, Alligator Gorge via Wilmington and Melrose – please note you must purchase a day pass to enter the park. Warren Gorge 5.2km Circuit Hike – 62km from Port Augusta Waukarie Creek Walk – Richman Valley Road via Quorn (Heysen Trail) through to Woolshed Flat.
