elcome to the April 2018 Edition of International Racehorse Magazine. I recently had the privilege to view the newly commissioned Captain Al life-size bronze, now resident at Klavervlei Stud. It is with great pleasure that I share our cover model, Captain Al by Rugare Arts with you.The story on this magnificent piece mounted in the Klavervlei courtyard which is overlooking the final resting place of Captain Al, is a lasting tribute to an unforgettable horse and features on page 9. Liesl King kicks of the South African features with a look at the remarkable story behind this year’s Sun Met , Cape Town’s premier race over 2000m, winner. She spends some time with the three-year old filly named Oh Susanna and trainer Justin Snaith who together rewrote the history books. Read all about it on page 16. Liesl also spends some time with Terasa Esplin, Kenilworth South Africa’s Racing Manager, who has held positions across the racing spectrum. The record books will reflect that it took Chris Snaith and son Justin a combined 40 years and seven second places to win their first Met with a filly named Oh Susanna (AUS). Well it may have taken forty years, but when Justin finally triumphed in the race that kept eluding him, he did it in his own inimitable style. For not only did Justin Snaith win the 2018 Grade 1 Sun Met, Cape Town’s premier race over 2000m, he did it with a three-yearold filly, something that had not been achieved for over a hundred years.

S
naith’s name may be in the record books for his extraordinary eight victories on Met day 2016, he may be the youngest champion trainer in South Africa and he may be the trainer of the first three-year-old filly to win the Met in the modern era, but what stands out above all these records is the fact that he is a horseman through and through. Having ridden from a young age, Justin spent his junior years as a showjumper and even amateur jockey in Cape Hunt races before turning his attention to his current passion of polo. Years spent on the backs of a variety of horses of all shapes and sizes has honed his ability to look at each horse as an individual and to adapt its training program accordingly. A quiet seat and a great pair of hands enable him to swing a leg over any of his charges, in order to assess how their training is progressing or to figure out exactly where a problem lies. There is an old cowboy saying: ‘ Tell a gelding, ask a stallion and negotiate with a mare’. And it is at these ‘negotiations with fillies and mares’ that Justin is a past master. Dancer’s Daughter, Ebony Flyer, Captain’s Lover, Bela-Bela, Snowdance and Oh Susanna are just some of the female champions that have passed through his hands. So what does it take to persuade a super-talented, quirky, headstrong and opinionated filly to produce her best on

the racetrack, especially if you want her to win that elusive race for you? “I am always changing what I do”, Snaith explains. “I try to find what suits each specific horse. I do a lot of athletics and I see how sports science constantly changes with the times. I also pick up on other sports and try to implement what I learn in the way I train my horses. I don’t just stick to the tried and tested. Each horse is different and unique and if I feel a change is needed, I will do it. I think our environment here also helps horses like Oh Susanna. The paddocks, the visits to the beach. Oh Susanna is in fact the quietest filly on the beach. She walks around with her head on the ground, she just loves going to the beach. The travelling in a float there, all of it is good for her. She gets at least half an hour of paddock time a day and that makes a huge difference. There is always a risk of a horse getting injured, but the gain for them to have some down time and sun on their backs is absolutely worth it.” “We also try to improve every year. This year with the race changing to a weight-for-age race it achieved two things. It helped a three-year-old filly win and it allowed the best horse to win. For me personally the biggest thing for Oh Susanna was the gallops dropping away. If we had had the gallops, she would not have won.

I could have done all those races, the Cape Fillies Guineas, the Paddock Stakes, but the gallops and the Sun Met on top of that, for a young three-year-old, would have been too much.” “Not only is she a young three-year-old, she is a filly and fillies take their races harder, especially her. She is certainly not the easiest of fillies. She can be temperamental, but we work around that. She gets led to the track every day. We have a lead pony, ridden by my father with her at all times and her lead pony will go with her to KwaZulu-Natal. She was very fortunate in all her races to either get a bad draw or to be ridden carefully through circumstance. As a youngster she didn’t have the pace to chase around them, although she does now. And we didn’t want to do that; we didn’t want to give her a hard race. The Street Cry’s don’t like that. They need to be ridden carefully. These Street Cry’s can run like the wind, but you have to treat them accordingly. They are very temperamental and they don’t like a hiding. Luckily Grant was too busy posing in the final stages of the Met, to give her the hard ride to the line that he probably should have.” It is precisely that understanding of what Oh Susanna likes and dislikes; what she will tolerate and what is not negotiable that persuaded the temperamental Street Cry daughter to break a hundred year old record. Does the name Street Cry sound familiar? Well it should. Despite his premature demise, Street

Cry was the sire of two of the best fillies ever to race in recent years. One was the mighty Zenyatta, a giant, near-black filly, who danced around parade rings and won 19 of her 20 races including the pinnacle of American racing, the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic. The other, a bay named Winx, is currently the joint highestranked horse in the world, who delights in leaving her Australian counterparts, both male and female in her dust. Listening to how Zenyatta’s trainer John Shireffs describes his star mare, you get an inkling of just what Snaith has to deal with when handling what could very well be the third superstar filly produced by Street Cry. “When Zenyatta was in her relaxed mode, she was very kind and was easy to deal with. But when she had the tack on, she was the ultimate racing machine and you had to be very careful not to upset her. We learned early on that we needed to think the way she wanted us to think. You could not force her to do something. She had to want to do it. If you tried to force her she became difficult to control.” Winx according to her strapper, Umut Odemislioglu, is eerily similar. “She is not a friendly horse. She likes her space, but she always does her job. That’s it and you don’t bother her.” Both clearly echoing Justin’s descriptions of the ‘negotiations’ required to keep Oh Susanna happy. So what does the future hold for the Sun Met star? Snaith as usual has a very clear and definitive plan. “The Woolavington is our aim.

Everything else we will decide as we go. The Vodacom Durban July - what worries me this year is the weights. With the likes of Marinaresco and Last Winter leaving the country we have lost some of our top horses. That leaves a gap at the top and that means everything below has to move up in the weights. That’s what happened to Bela-Bela and I don’t want to do that to Oh Susanna. If she comes in at a half decent weight we will consider it. But if the weights aren’t right and I feel that it will take too much out of her, she will not be in the race. She is only three, if she wins the Woolavington, that’s it, job done.”
which is the next mountain Snaith wants to conquer? “Overseas”, comes the simple answer. “If we get the quarantine sorted, I would like to take a couple of horses overseas, but none of that will ever happen until we change our quarantine. I will not do six months. It’s too far and too long. I think it is unfair for our horses to have to endure that.” Having rewritten the record books with his clean sweep of the three Grade 1 races on Sun Met Day, there is little doubt that his horses are very capable of taking on the world. Snaith agrees. “My fillies at the moment are good enough to compete in Dubai, France, Hong Kong or even America. We are fortunate that we are a racing family and that my father can take over if I go travelling with the horses.” It is clear that Snaith has given his next mountain a great deal of thought; quietly planning for the moment the quarantine protocols become workable.
Is there a worry travelling his valuable stars all to way to Durban? True to form, Snaith has not only assessed the best way to get them there, but he has also gone the extra mile, gathering information from the best in the world on how they travel their stars across continents. “I have spoken to a lot of international trainers such as the Cumani’s on how they transport their horses and I have picked up on a couple of things that really help the horses travel Yet his feet are firmly planted on mother earth and for now his better. ust a few months ago, the internationally recognised Cape Thoroughbred Sales (CTS) Cape Premier Yearling Sale (CPYS) took place in picturesque Cape Town. Scheduled to form part of the build-up to January’s Sun Met race meeting, featuring multiple Graded races as well as two CTS incentive races, this year’s sale took place against the backdrop of optimistic new initiatives aiming to provide impetus towards opening up the multimillion dollar export market for South African bloodstock.

Blessed with a number of world-class stud farms, South Africa continues to plan and prepare for the day they get to see their yearlings widely distributed on the global stage, something that - except for rare instances - historic export protocols rendered practically impossible for years.
236 Lots were offered at CPYS 2018 of which 221 were sold at an impressive clearing rate of 94%, realising an aggregate of R111,475,000 ($9,3 million). The average of R504,000 ($42,000) and median price of R300,000 for both colts and fillies made CPYS 2018 by far the most successful sale in South Africa over the past year.
Recent developments have, however, led to increasing confidence that a solution to the country’s onerous export protocols has never been closer. Prominent industry figures Chris van Niekerk, Adrian Todd, Lee Scribante, Mike de Kock, Robin Bruss, Mick Goss, Peter Gibson and Jessica Slack comprise the South African Equine Health Protocols (SAEHP) group, with their mission being for South Africa to resume direct international trade with sustainable export protocols in place.
South Africa’s top four stallions were highly sought after, as progeny of ill-fated Captain Al, Silvano, Dynasty and Trippi proved most popular. Several Frankel yearlings predictably

with procedures in place for the protection of the African Horse Sickness (AHS) free zone. By January 2019 it is hoped to resume direct trade with the EU. By the end of 2019 they aim to conclude protocols with targeted non-EU countries, and agreement of the design of a quarantine station. “Recent international and scientific developments have shown us that there is definitely light at the end of the tunnel. While we still have a long road ahead, solid progress has been made,” is the encouraging message from Todd. Back on the local front, CTS stock has been excelling, pushing out winner after winner across all South African racing centres. In the Grade 1 Cape Flying Championships at Kenilworth, a CTS quartet prevailed, with graduates Sergeant Hardy (by Captain Al), Trip To Heaven (Trippi), Live Life (Trippi) and Brutal Force (Western Winter) completing a 1-2-3-4 finish. In going gun to tape, the victor stayed unbeaten over 1000m with trainer, Justin Snaith, describing Sergeant Hardy – despite his well-publicised breathing problems - as a “gallant horse with a big heart.” Part of the attraction of all CTS auctions are the lucrative

incentive races linked to the purchase of eligible candidates. Substantial dollar-denominated stakes tempt connections, and in this year’s $500,000 CTS 1200, high class young sprinter Dutch Philip streaked home to boost his takings to over R4 million. By top freshman sire What A Winter, Dutch Philip was bred by Rex Stud and purchased for R460,000. Undercover Agent proved victorious in the $500,000 CTS 1600. The son of multiple champion Captain Al got a perfect stalking trip in a falsely run race, where the first three at the top of the straight took advantage of soft early fractions to complete the trifecta. Captain And Master finished second with improbable long-shot Rings And Things third. A R325,000 purchase at CPYS 2016, Undercover Agent has now earned more than ten times that amount. CTS recently released online catalogues for the upcoming 2018 April Yearling Sale to be held at the picturesque Durbanville racecourse outside Cape Town. This innovative new sale – a combination of previously-held CTS March and Emperor’s Palace sales - takes place over 2 days on Thursday 12 and Friday 13 April and begins with a Select evening session on day one.

Compared to previous March sales, this upgraded event sees a 33% increase in the number of lots on offer, growing from 257 in 2017 to 342 this year. “This is a really exciting new format and catalogue.” said CTS CEO Wéhann Smith. “There is strong sire pulling power, quality individuals at a range of price levels, and some impressive new stallions being represented, all of which will make this sale appeal to all types of buyers.” Apart from previously mentioned Dutch Philip, other March Sale graduates include inaugural CTS Million Dollar victor Illuminator, a R180,000 purchase in 2014 who amassed over R8 million in stakes; 2017 Selangor hero Rocket Countdown, and Safe Harbour who has already earned R2,7 million in prize money. “The support we have received from breeders this year has been fantastic. We look very carefully at the calendar and consult the industry to find the right window, and I am very satisfied that this year – with the later date and Select session – will show bigger, stronger bloodstock at all ends of the market” says Smith. “We have progeny from Dynasty, Silvano and Trippi, alongside top international sires Rock Of Gibraltar,

Camelot and Exchange Rate, and some of the last available Captain Al’s – making this sale a wonderful opportunity to buy into some proven bloodlines, or pin hook ahead of our Readyto-Run Sale to be held on 23 November.” Pin hooking has proved to be incredibly successful for many shrewd buyers at CTS Sales, and this year should be no different. At last year’s CTS RTR Sale 20 lots made profits of R195 000 or more, with no fewer than 8 making over R400,000 more than their original price. Lot 110, a colt by freshman sire Jackson sold for R700,000 after originally passing through the ring for a mere R45,000 while progeny of Captain Al (Lot 125) and Dynasty (Lot 5 – out of 2011-12 Champion 2YO Filly All Is Secret) realized profits in excess of R600,000. Recent international success of CTS graduates, Janoobi (Zabeel Mile in Dubai) and Singapore Sling (Hong Kong’s Classic Cup) provides further incentive to attend, and CTS are again offering logistical back-up, including travel arrangements for out-of-town visitors. SOUTH AFRICAN HORSES IN HONG KONG Hong Kong, known as the racing mecca of the East, has always been a home away from home for a host of South African jockeys. Joao Moreira has some way to go before he comes close to Douglas Whyte’s record of 13 straight Jockey’s Championships. Basil Marcus wasn’t far behind with seven, while Felix Coetzee and Anthony Delpech are still remembered for their partnerships with all time greats such as Silent Witness (AUS) and Vengeance Of Rain (NZ). Even South African trainers made their way to Hong Kong with Tony Millard and David Ferraris currently flying the flag.

illard has been a great supporter of South African horses despite the difficulties in getting them to Hong Kong. Two of his current stars, Nassa and Singapore Sling are both SA breds and between them have added a tidy amount of silverware and a rather large amount of prize money to their owners’ pockets.

from Ireland and Japan, seven from Britain, six from France and one each from the USA and South Africa. In fact the South African horse is listed as GB as that is where she has been training since leaving South Africa almost two years ago and therein lies the problem. While the other international horses can fly pretty much straight in, it takes an entrant from South Africa five months of quarantine to compete in Hong Kong. Five months of quarantine, on three continents and with enough air miles in between to achieve gold status, is hard for any horse never mind an elite athlete. Even yearlings, who do not have to stay fit, still battle with the length of the journey. And that’s not taking into account the changes of food and routine at every stop. Thankfully the Hong Kong Jockey Club and in particular their CEO Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, who is also the vice chairman of the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA), has been pushing for a leveling of the playing fields where South African horses are concerned. Meanwhile back on home soil Cape Thoroughbred Sales, the Thoroughbred Breeders Association together with Bloodstock SA hosted a workshop to address the quarantine issues and a task team was brought together. From there the implementing entity, the South African Equine Health and Protocols task force, headed by Adrian Todd, was formed. Todd has indicated that they are making significant progress.
The ultimate aim is to fly direct after 16 days of quarantine in total lockdown in the fully vector protected complex in Cape Town, coupled with the use of the OIE approved PCR test for the genetic material of the virus, which can provide results within four hours. In another positive move the Hong Kong Jockey Club buying team attended the CTS Cape Premier Yearling Sale in January for the first time. Engelbrecht-Bresges has been quoted as saying that it is due to significant efforts spent in the last year by the IFHA and its International Movement of Horses Committee, along with South African authorities and the racing industry, to integrate South Africa’s top-quality bloodstock and racehorses into global racing. The HKJC’s team of Nick Columb and Mark Richards were active early on in the Sale when taking the bidding to the R2.5 million mark for Lot 23, a Dynasty colt out of the dual Group 1 winning Dubawi mare, Happy Archer (AUS). Consigned by the Drakenstein Stud, the colt named Perfect Day is the third foal out of the mare. Columb and Richards were back in action one lot later when snapping up the full brother to Group 1 winner Happy Valentine. “They are both strong, good looking individuals”, said Columb. “The right style of horse for our racing. They will be exported to Hong Kong via Mauritius and offered for sale as three-year-olds to our owners at the Hong Kong Sale.”

The team’s next purchase was Lot 133 consigned by Klawervlei Stud, for R1,8 million. The striking grey colt by Captain Al out of the Goldkeeper (USA) mare Secret Of Victoria is a full brother to multiple Group 1 winning filly All Is Secret and Group 1 Allan Robertson Championship winner The Secret Is Out. From an outstanding sprinter/miler female family and by a sprinter/miler stallion in the deceased Captain Al, the colt named I Am The Secret is ideal for the Hong Kong market. “He’s a lovely horse, he’s not tall but he’s big and strong and obviously the mare’s already done the job with two siblings by Captain Al so we’re very happy to have got him. He ticked all the boxes, as they say! “Given Captain Al’s record he’s an obvious choice for us, it’s just a shame he’s no longer with us anymore as we’ve come to the party very late, but in our view this colt was one of two very, very good Captain Als in this sale”, commented Columb. The second Captain Al selected by Columb and Richards was Lot 199, with the hammer falling in their favour at R700,000. Consigned by Avontuur Stud, the bay

colt is out of Baltic Beauty, a full sister to multiple Group 1 winner Mother Russia, from the family of G1 Empress Club Stakes winner Nother Russia. “He is also from a powerful sprinter/miler family which is ideal for Hong Kong”, Columb added. “Hong Kong owners may not understand South African breeding yet, but they can read a pedigree and can see the record of Captain Al so these colts will be well thought of. We work predominantly on type, pedigree is important, but we don’t buy anything we don’t like physically. They also have to show us they have a little bit of precocity because 88 per cent of races in Hong Kong are run over a mile or shorter so they have to have a turn of foot.” With these horses adding to the pool of SA breds in Hong Kong and with the possibility of the buying team returning for the Bloodstock SA National Sale, together with the efforts of EngelbrechtBresges and the South African Equine Health and Protocols task force, it may not be too long before our horses take Hong Kong by storm.

TERESA ESPLIN MY JOB IS MY PASSION
Teresa Esplin has worked in pretty much every aspect of horseracing as her CV attests – pre-training rider, stud groom, yearling sales handler, assistant trainer, starter, judge and lastly racing liaison officer. Somewhere in the middle the word Legal PA crept in, but it was soon overtaken by an abundance of horseracing terms and the world was right again. If there is one thing that Esplin is, it is passionate about horses. Whether it is marching across the green turf of Kenilworth Racecourse, radio in hand or astride a racehorse in full training splashing through the waves, her world in both work and in play is filled with horses.
H
er love of horses started in junior school, when she learnt to ride on some horses belonging to friends of her dad. Living on a smallholding out near Atlantis, she soon learnt that a lady called Diz Bostock was doing pre-training and spelling nearby. Of course it was only logical to do her school work shadowing with Bostock. Hence when her schooling was finally done, it was a job in horses that she wanted to find. Those however were few and far between. She heard through the grapevine that Janet Burns of El-Lions Farm might have a position available, but by the time she enquired it had been filled. 42

Undeterred she started doing some film work through Burns and not too long afterwards Burns offered her a job. After approximately two years with Burns, they decided to sell their farm and she was once again in the job market. This time she found a job with trainer Glen Kotzen. She had finally found her way to those magnificent racehorses that intrigued her so. Esplin takes up the story: “I worked for Glen for four years and in the middle of those four years I went to work in Ireland at Rathbarry Stud. My mother is Irish, but I was born here and l lived in Ireland from the age of two, till the age of eight, when we came back. All my relatives were there, but mostly I wanted to go work in Ireland as it has

such a great reputation for producing the best racehorses. I tried to get into a racing yard, but their setup is very different to here, so I wasn’t able to get a job as an assistant trainer. “Someone suggested that I contact Rathbarry Stud in County Cork, since they also had a National Hunt stud and their son trained horses for jumps racing. He also didn’t have work for me, but they did have a position available for a stud groom on the main stud and I jumped at the chance. I worked there for a year and a half, working with mares, yearlings, foals and stallions. I arrived during the yearling sale season and was put straight to work prepping for the sales. Next I was put in charge of my own barn with 22 mares and their foals. When the foals were two days old they were brought across from the foaling unit to my barn and then when they got to a certain age they were moved on to the next barn. So I would get two day old foals, keep them for a month and then move them on to the next barn and the next batch would arrive.” It was quite a compliment on Rathbarry Stud’s part, as while Esplin had worked with mares and foals at El-Lions Farm, it had been a small operation with only six mares. The Cashman’s Rathbarry Stud was an entirely different operation, standing up to ten stallions at any given time, including the likes of World Champion Miler, Barathea (IRE). Rathbarry is also the largest family-owned Stud in Europe, with a reputation of having stood 44

six Champion First Season Sires in their respective years, with the most recent being Acclamation. Esplin is certainly not kidding when she says it was a huge challenge. Yet if there is one thing she has in abundance it is work ethic. It didn’t take her long to roll up her sleeves and knuckle down to the job at hand, even though as she admits, at first they did think she was rather nuts. “At Rathbarry they let their mares live quite rough, nothing is wrapped in cottonwool. So they would come into my barn with manes hanging below their necks and tails trailing to the floor, full of knots. I would set to work immediately, pulling their manes, brushing and trimming their tails, while my foals had their foalslips put on every morning and taken off every night. The resident vet, who did the morning checks, used to say that he always knew which ones were mine, even if they had been moved to another barn. When you opened the door in the morning to check them, my foals would look up and then go back to sleep again, while other people’s foals would leap up and panic. “I really loved it there. I saw a lot of interesting stuff, a lot of stuff that you probably wouldn’t see here. It is such a massive operation. There were a lot of walk-ins and they had a lot of overseas clients, so it wasn’t just prepping yearlings. They are quite big on pin-hooking there, so we were prepping weanlings as well. Then we would prep the National Hunt yearlings as

well as some older National Hunt horses, as they do tend to break them in a lot later. I even got to exercise Barathea in the off season. What a gentleman he was. I will never forget that. One day I was walking him up the road, after lunging him and we walked past a camp of yearling fillies. He happily walked past, but he walked with his head and neck across me, as if to say to I am not going to go to them, but I want to look, so don’t stop me looking. It was such fun. “Our yearlings would go on the walker every morning; they even put weanlings on the walker. We also handwalked as there were a lot of roads on the stud. I vividly remember getting dragged along for meters and meters by a weanling.Then when the sales come around you travel with them to the sales and you show them. I loved it and to this day I still ask myself why I left Rathbarry to come back. I thought at the time coming back would be a better option, because I had friends here. Its funny”, she reminisces, “because if you go overseas on a trip like that and you are forced to make new friends, it takes you out of your comfort zone. Then when you come back, everybody is still where you left them, but you have moved on and it was actually very hard transitioning back here, but my dad was very ill and I felt I had to come home. Otherwise it is quite possible that I would have stayed.” Back home came the only non-horsey blip as Esplin studied to
become a Legal PA and was offered a job with a Conveyancing Attorney before she had even graduated. You may be able to keep horses away from Esplin, but you can’t keep her away from them. So while studying, she was working part time for Eric Sands in his yard, helping him with admin and also working as a photo-finish judge for the NHRA. Soon however it all got too much. Esplin discovered that she wasn’t allowed to become a licensed assistant trainer and be a photo-finish judge, so a choice had to be made. Sands’ training yard won, but still she combined jobs, accepting the offered job with the conveyancing attorney. That however was never going to work as she admits with a wry smile. “I don’t think I even lasted three months! So I went back to work for Eric for about two years and when we parted ways, I ended up working for a recruitment agent. “At the same time I got a job with the NHRA as a starter (the first female one in this country I was told!). I worked as a starter for a while but the recruitment agent wanted me full time so I resigned as midweek starter, but kept on doing it on Saturdays. Then the job with Gold Circle at Kenilworth Racecourse came up. I applied, had an interview, got appointed and nearly eleven years later I am still here.” Esplin’s official job title is Racing Liaison Officer and if that doesn’t mean much to you, don’t worry. that on race days, she is in charge of making sure everything runs smoothly and if something goes wrong, to make sure it is sorted as soon as possible. Her day starts with the dissemination of scratchings, equipment and jockey changes and the track report. She needs to make sure all the staff and the medics are in attendance which includes a radio check, half an hour before racing, to ensure that the paramedics, the course doctor, the course farrier, the vets, the judges, the starter and basically all the key people without whom racing cannot start, are all in radio contact. “They are all on one channel and all our internal staff are on a separate channel, so that we don’t confuse each other with things”, she explains. “Then it is just a case of keeping an eye on the race meeting, making sure nothing goes wrong and if it does, to try and fix it as quickly as possible. Some problems are quick fixes and others such as a horse breaking down or getting injured can become quite difficult – luckily that doesn’t happen often. I also tell the starter before each race to keep an eye on every horse that is paying less than R5 on the tote or if it is the favourite. If anything happens to those horses at the start or they get scratched, then we have a responsibility towards the public to unload the whole field if it is at all possible, in order to allow everybody to redo their bets. Also any scratchings that happen on course I have to relay back to 46

the Clerk of Scales, Racing Operations and Telly Track. Lastly, once the judges phone me with the results, then I wait for the Clerk of Scales, as well as the Stipendiary Stewards and if everybody is happy then I can advise the commentator that the ‘all clear’ can be announced. “During the rest of the week one of my job description points is to maintain and improve the relationship between the operator and the trainers. Hence I visit the training centres to keep on top of things and I attend to any problems. I am also in charge of incoming visiting horses. They apply for stabling through me and I accommodate them where I can. Likewise any local trainers who want to increase their stables yards need to come and discuss it with me.” And as if she isn’t busy enough she is also in charge of the quarterly racehorse census done in conjunction withthe NHRA, which is used for programming purposes. I wonder aloud whether there are any future plans to return to Ireland? Yet while Esplin admits she misses the closeness of her family, she is adamant that South Africa is her home. “I have a boyfriend, friends and my horses here and I enjoy what I do. Every job has its pros and cons and I am one of the lucky ones, my job is my passion. And it doesn’t get much better than that!”

Recipe by Chef Kerry Kilpin of Bistro Sixteen82 Grilled Sirloin, Whisky and Black Pepper Jus, Green Pea and Tomato Salsa Serves 2 2 x 220g sirloin steaks Olive oil Salt and pepper 50g wild rocket
Green Pea and Tomato Salsa
80g cooked peas 80g cherry tomatoes quartered 5g chopped parsley 10ml olive oil Squeeze of lemon juice ½ red onion chopped Combine all the ingredients for the salsa and season with salt and pepper.
Black Pepper Jus
½ red onion chopped 4 button mushrooms chopped Canola oil 250ml beef stock 250ml cream 3ml crushed black pepper 60ml whisky Sauté the onion and mushroom with a little oil until nice and brown, deglaze with the whisky and bring to the boil. Add the black pepper and stock and reduce by half. Add the cream and reduce by half. Blend with a stick blender and season with salt. Taste and, depending how strong you like your black pepper, add more if necessary. Season the sirloins with salt, pepper and olive oil. Pre-heat your pan until nice and hot. Pan fry your steaks to desired cooking degree. Allow your steak to rest for 2 minutes before slicing. Slice the sirloin in half, place on a bed of rocket, top with the green pea and tomato salsa and drizzle the black pepper jus on the plate.
Serve with a glass of delicious Steenberg Merlot. Enjoy!

ow standing at the top of international racing, the Brazilianborn jockey can breathe in the rarefied air he earned over four decades in the saddle while proudly claiming the title of the winningest jockey of all time.
“I never doubted that I would tie the record and that I would break it—never, even in the worst moments. After my last fall (in December 2016, which sidelined him for ten months with a broken left femur) I knew that only a fatality could keep me from realizing my dream,” Ricardo, 56, declared not long after steering home his 12,845th winner. He etched that achievement—which could endure for a very long time as there is no rider close to being within reach of that lofty mark—into the annals of racing legend on February 7 at Hipodromo de San Isidro in Buenos Aires. Two days earlier, Ricardo had tied the record of 12,844 winners, set by American-based Racing Hall of Fame jockey Russell Baze prior to his sudden retirement at age 57 in 2016, while competing before his countrymen at Hipodromo da Gávea in Rio de Janeiro. Tears streamed down the face of the man known fondly to South Americans as “Ricardinho” after that landmark score in his native land. “I waited long for this and finally I got it,” Ricardo said in a voice choked by emotion as he was engulfed by celebrating well-wishers.

He also had two uncles who were jockeys in the 1960s and ’70s, and he was given a leg up by his father on his first winner in November 1976 at Gávea. That was just the beginning of what would be many

I took a week, occasionally two. My life has always been about horse racing.”

Ricardo revealed much about his nature after he set the record at San Isidro with a winning ride in the fourth race on the program aboard La Francia stable’s aptly named Honour and Glory mare Hope Glory, who prevailed by a half-length in the 1600m event for fillies and mares with one lifetime win. “I thank everyone for the support and affection they always gave me,” Ricardo said. “But I also want to thank Russell Baze with all my heart, the man who inspired me to move forward, a great person without whom I would not have achieved what I achieved. I offer my respect for an incredible professional who is as much the owner of this record as I am.” Baze and Ricardo famously battled over the title of the most successful jockey by wins for about ten years, with the latter surpassing the former in 2006 with his 9,591st winning mount. Ricardo went on to be the first jockey ever to win 10,000
races in 2008, but then Baze charged back and became the first to reach the 11,000-win plateau in 2010. That landmark for Baze came after Ricardo had to take time off to battle lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system and white blood cells that he overcame while out of the saddle for six months. Ricardo also faced several serious injuries, including a broken jaw and fractured shoulder suffered in a fall in 2013, which led him to reduce somewhat the number of horses he regularly rode once he was able to return to competition. While Ricardo’s faith never wavered that he could reach the lofty peak of becoming the world’s winningest rider, there have been many difficult moments of varying intensities that he has had to navigate. On the day he tied Baze’s record, he seemed disappointed not to break the mark at Gávea as inclement weather hampered some of his mounts. “I was getting anxious, very nervous. At Gávea, the rain ruined me, because all the races went to the dirt and my horses had double the chance to win on the grass. I lost two incredible races,” he said.
He finally tied Baze with a win on the Brazilian-bred Rock of Gibraltar filly Jubileia before going back to Argentina to reach the pinnacle. “I felt happiness, joy, a desire to embrace everyone,” he declared after establishing the new mark, noting that he is a survivor who is still formidable regardless of his age. Indeed, he added another win to his total before the 14-race San Isidro program concluded. “I know that at 20, at 30 or at 40, it is not the same as at 56, but I am not destroyed either. I have good form, I take care of myself more than ever and I am still able to put up a good fight,” he said. From now on, every race has the potential to take Ricardo higher and higher up the mountain he has mastered as no one before him could. “Every race that I win from now on will be a new record. That sounds good,” he said with a laugh. “The goal to set the record is now fulfilled and my aim will be to continue riding

with the same enthusiasm and the same professionalism to get the most advantage possible.” When 2018 comes to a close, Ricardo will pause and consider whether he should continue to climb. “I will decide what to do, I will see how my body and head are and I will decide if I keep racing or if I retire. Today, I think it is more likely I will stay active, although being more selective, even if it is only a little longer. But I’ll talk to my family and I’ll decide.”

It’s a great pleasure to have done that and also an honor to be on the same team.”

At the same sale a year later the Group One winner Response was sold to Japanese interests for $1.5 million. The mare was carrying this year’s boom juvenile filly Estijaab. t was a cold and wet day in February 2017, to the back to inspect the Lot, and found a small but neat bay when French couple, Xavier and Nathalie Bozo Visionaire filly who was very nicely put together. Pleased with decided to attend a Summer Ready To Run Sale at what she saw, Nathalie hurried to get a Buyer’s Card. Summerhill Stud. It wasnt long before the filly Cascada was knocked down Summerhill Stud is far from an ordinary farm – for a mere R25 000 to the French connections, which they have held the South African Championship included Aliette and Emmanuel Chevalier Du Fau, the trainer of French Oaks winner Dunette. Dunette is the daughter Breeder Award for 10 years – nine of those consecutively. of Cascada’s fourth dam named Pram. Dunette’s half-sister Xavier, a French Bloodstock Agent and his wife Nathalie, is Godille, the imported third dam of Cascada who found a Thoroughbred breeder in France for almost 40 years, her way to Summerhill Stud. This is the family of one of attended the sale with friends, amongst them the breeder Summerhill’s many Gr1 winners Desert Links, winner of the Aliette Forien – who bred Wings Of Eagles, the winner of Gold Cup. last year’s Epsom Derby. Apart from the beautiful Summerhill views and opulence of the facilities, the lunch is provided by Nathalie said she was not fussed about the filly’s small size, their own restaurant Hartford which happens to be one of which she said was a trait in her fillies’ ancestors. She explained South Africa’s leading hotel establishments – it all proved a that it all started with a racemare in France called Exciting perfect reason to attend a sale on a rainy KZN Midlands day. wasn’t always on her side as a racehorse, the filly went on to produce Gorella (by Grape Tree Road), who would take the Bozos to America to see her place third in the Gr1 Breeders Cup Mile as a 3yo. Gorella, trained by Jean De Roualle, had won a Gr3 in France at the age of 2, won a French Gr2 at age three and placed in three major international Gr1’s that year. Sold on which saw her exported to America and trained by Patrick L Biancone, it was at age 4 that she gave the Bozo’s their first Gr1 winner as breeders, taking the American Beverley D Stakes in a race that needs to be watched – coming from stone cold last to swoop down and win by lengths. Xavier and Nathalie went on to produce another Gr1 winner from the same mare, a colt who had immense staying power and won his Gr1 marathon, steeplechasing in the colours of the Bozos. At the sale, they were advised that trainer Doug Campbell had great success with a Visionaire filly named Lala, and Nathalie and Xavier Bozo sent Cascada to Doug to train.Visionaire has
produced many good fillies including Group Winners Heaps Of Fun and Royal Pleasure. Cascada began her racing career over 1000m at Scottsville and placed 6th on debut behind Miss Frankel. Racing green, she improved by three lengths over the same course and distance a month later, and in her third start after a three month rest, Cascada finished in second place over 1200m at Greyville. Trying a bit more distance, Doug put the filly over 1400m which saw her finish 4th by three lengths. Knowing how much stamina was in the pedigree of Cascada, Nathalie encouraged Doug to put the filly over further. Landing a very wide draw of ten but with Warren Kennedy in the irons, Cascada was hot going to the start, fly jumping on her way down. She showed plenty of speed to accelerate and flew past them to win by a very comfortable two lengths over the 1600m for her jubilant and esteemed group of owners – an extraordinary story of a pedigree coming full circle almost 20 years apart in two different countries, and plenty of celebrating in the winners enclosure that afternoon at Scottsville.

The green and gold colours of Xavier and Nathalie Bozo have been carried to the South African winning enclosures before – their first trip to South Africa after being invited by the South African Thoroughbred Breeders Association, saw them purchase a beautiful Australian imported filly that was part of Summerhill’s draft for R900 000.The daughter of Fantastic Light, named African Love, is very well related internationally – her dam is a half-sister to Bounding, a Gr1 winning daughter of Lonhro who sold for A$1,900,000, making news headlines the world over when she was purchased by Stonestreet Farm in the United States. The mare currently resides in the USA and has just foaled a strong Curlin colt.

Xavier is opening a Bloodstock Agency in Summerveld, KZN, to prepare Thoroughbred exchanges with other countries, in particular France, with the impending positive international changes of rules for South African quarantine. The Rainbow Bloodstock Agency, which will operate in and out of South Africa, will be managed by Xavier with two South African friends and colleagues. The SAF-bred horses continue to fly the flag internationally in Dubai (Janoobi and Light The Lights recently), Hong Kong (Singapore Sling), Europe (Smart Call, Brave Mary and Anna Pavlova to come), and with the strong possibility of South Africa’s export protocols opening for international business soon, it is ‘exciting times’ indeed to be a breeder in South Africa.

PHOENIX SOARING AROUND GLOBE UNIQUE RACING VENTURE FOUNDED BY AMER ABDULAZIZ MAKING ITS MARK From Europe across the Atlantic Ocean to America and then south of the equator to Australia, the name that has skyrocketed upward in the racing realm over the past year with a series of high-ticket bloodstock purchases and subsequent elite track success has been Phoenix Thoroughbreds.

et until this spring, Phoenix was cloaked in mystery. The man who created what was designed to be the first regulated Thoroughbred investment fund anywhere on the globe deliberately stayed out of the spotlight.
Dream Tree now is unbeaten in four starts through March and will target some of the top races for three-year-old fillies in America this season. At the same time in England, Phoenix’s Gronkowski—a 300,000 guineas purchase at the 2017Tattersalls Craven breeze-up sale, earned points for a possible trip to the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May.
All that changed at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s March two-year-olds in training sale in Florida when Dubai-based entrepreneur Amer Abdulaziz stepped forward to lead a phalanx of high-profile advisers, including leading American trainer Bob Baffert, in securing the sale-topping Scat Daddy filly and two other juveniles for a total of $1.9 million.
While other ownership groups can wait lifetimes to even approach such altitudes in racing, Abdulaziz said that since the long-planned objective of the Phoenix fund is to acquire highcaliber horses that can achieve in the world’s top races under the supervision of superior trainers, success was sure to follow.
Speaking candidly to reporters, Abdulaziz made it clear that his goals for Phoenix and its investors are nothing short of becoming a worldwide superpower in the sport. The most coveted races on the globe are his targets, including the Kentucky Derby.
“That was on the agenda,” he said of the early achievements. “That’s what we are trying to do by buying top-quality horses— we hoped to build a reputation of the first order. And from Day 1, with all our buying, our aim was the Kentucky Derby.”
Born in Bahrain, Abdulaziz has been connected to horses for “Our aim is to be the best,” declared Abdulaziz, who in 2017 most of his life. finance, Abdulaziz discovered Thoroughbred racing at nearby Golden Gate Fields. “I fell in love with the Thoroughbreds,” he said, recounting his impressions of the action at Golden Gate. “I was drawn to their speed and how stunning and alert they were. I started dreaming about racing and breeding Thoroughbreds—and this dream stayed with me always.” He began taking note of international racing and remembers being particularly impressed by 1989 Epsom Derby and Two Thousand Guineas winner Nashwan. “He was owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum and he had an Arabic name, and that hit me in the face. I wanted to know, ‘Who is this horse?” Abdulaziz recounted of the American-bred chestnut by Blushing Groom. “From there, I started to follow racing, and I remember Sadler’s Wells and Pivotal, and Galileo, of course. One of the best races I ever saw was the (2001) Irish Champion Stakes in which Fantastic Light defeated Galileo. “In America, I remember the rivalry between Easy Goer and Sunday Silence, and I went back and watched all the races between Affirmed and Alydar and studied all the pedigrees.”
Following his graduation, Abdulaziz went on to work in banking and the high-powered corporate finance world at companies such as Philip Morris and Coca-Cola Inc. In 2015, he established his own business base in Dubai and began to build up an international presence that today spans a variety of ventures in technology, real estate, housing, scrap metal and hospitality. His Phoenix Fund Investments is a boutique private equity enterprise under which he established Phoenix Thoroughbreds as a subsidiary fund. Abdulaziz said it took him more than four years to do all the research about the Thoroughbred industry worldwide to identify investment opportunities and then shape an investment fund structure that was solid and appealing to potential investors, particularly in Europe and America. He designed it to be regulated in Luxembourg, and he had to build up working capital as well as recruit a specialized group of people with the appropriate financial-oriented background to serve as Phoenix’s investment directors and advisors. Reaction to the unique investment vehicle—the key concept of which is to allow investors to enjoy the sport of kings while reducing risk by diversifying purchases across the spectrum of racing and breeding assets while constantly evaluating and selling

for profit in order to yield a strong annual return—was upbeat. “People we spoke with (in investment circles) thought this is an amazing product—no one had heard of a product like this before. They were very impressed as they realized (through Phoenix fund investor information) how much money is involved in this industry in stallions, weanlings, broodmares and yearlings,” Abdulaziz said. “They realized there is money to be made if this is done right.” Once a certain amount of capital was raised and purchasing of horses initiated, the orange and white Phoenix silks began appearing in winner’s circles. “Once we managed to get all the organizational and financial work done, we went ‘boom,’ ” Abdulaziz said, smiling and referring to the immediate racing rewards. In addition to Dream Tree and Gronkowski, Phoenix’s early winners included the very promising Walk in the Sun, an American-bred son of Street Sense who could target European classic races in 2018 after topping the 2017 Arqana May breezeup sale at €1.4 million and then winning his first two starts. Other winners include Take Me With You, an $800,000 Scat Daddy filly purchased at the 2017 Fasig-Tipton Florida two-yearolds in training sale who placed in the Group 3 Albany Stakes
at Royal Ascot last June; Diamondsandpearls, a $1.7 million saletopping Congrats filly from the 2017 OBS March venue who was a debut winner for Baffert, and Mourinho, a $625,000 OBS March juvenile who Baffert developed into a stakes winner before a tragic fracture incurred during training claimed the colt’s life. Gronkowski, Walk in the Sun and Take Me With You have all been trained by Newmarket-based Jeremy Noseda, who, like Baffert, is a special advisor to Phoenix. Other European trainers associated with Phoenix include Sir Michael Stoute, Andre Fabre, and Ed Vaughan, and the stable is active in Ireland and France in addition to England. Phoenix is also creating a significant operation in Australia and New Zealand.The stable’s first runner in Australasia, juvenile filly Hard As, a daughter of All Too Hard who was an A$210,000 purchase at the 2017 Inglis Easter yearling sale, won on debut for trainer David Vandyke on February 25. Nonetheless, Abdulaziz is focused in large measure on the United States due to the size and scope of the racing and breeding industry there. “The U.S. market is the biggest in the world, which is very important,” he observed. “And I love American racing—it’s very competitive.”

Phoenix has joined with a few American partners, led by Three Chimneys Farm, Gainesway Farm and Stonestreet, on some expensive yearling purchases: an $850,000 Violence colt, a $675,000 Tapit filly and a $500,000 Into Mischief colt, respectively. The objective is to not only more efficiently penetrate the market but also to form significant relationships, always with an eye on “the long vision,” as Abdulaziz said.
Baffert, the stable also is working with award-winning American trainers Steve Asmussen and Todd Pletcher.
“They will support us and we will support them,” he said of Phoenix’s partners. “We are very careful about who we partner with; we only want to deal with the best because we want to be the best.”
The rapid rise of Phoenix has provided plenty of highs and a few lows, with the latter including a split with initial bloodstock agent Kerri Radcliffe. But Abdulziz sees it all as a step-by-step progression toward bigger success in the future combined with the ongoing opportunity to amass some of the best horses in the world for Phoenix’s investors.
“We want to make a return for our investors, so we must have partners who will help us make that return,” Abdulaziz said. “We are always thinking about strategic partners and people who can add value to our fund.”

science, systems, personnel and government support. Thus we may achieve freedom of export movement later this year to and via EU, then next year to “third party” importers all keen to import directly. The whole thing is credible and tangible for the first time for decades. Values would increase dramatically. Not only may direct exports shoot upwards, but also global bloodstock players in the likes of UK, Ireland, France, USA, Australasia and, South America will reassess South African multi-directional opportunity. At the premium SA sales, the Frankels and Camelots will vanish. That trade is done and gone other than a few currently at foot until we arrange different imports or shuttle stallions. The late super stallion Captain Al has few remaining. Silvano, Dynasty and Trippi will supply fewer. The new guard will take over along with more imported pedigrees refreshing the South African gene pool. Yearling experts will soon be buying from a wider range. Is 2 million rand too much? On the contrary. Standing a shade over 16 hands, Astern is a half brother to Group 1 winner Alizee and his pedigree pulses with quality as his third and fourth dams are Group 1 winner La Baraka and champion Triscay. Even before he arrived in Kentucky and despite the fact that he was Australian-bred with his racetrack exploits achieved on turf, Astern captivated breeders who nearly filled his book, which Darley is limiting in the Northern Hemisphere this season to 120. Once he did reach Jonabell, the last slots were quickly snapped up as he was paraded for inspections in January. “He was pretty easy to sell,” said Darley sales manager Darren Fox.“Physically, he’s quality and class. He has an attractive head and a big hip with good length to his body, and he’s very well balanced. But what I like about him best is the way he moves. He scores highly in every category and he will have ample opportunity to show what he can do.” Like Vancouver, Astern stands for $15,000 in Kentucky, a level that is encouraging for breeders who might not fully appreciate his race record but who are impressed by his looks and his sire. His dam is a daughter of Exceed and Excel, who is by Danehill. While reverse shuttlers already have been successful in Europe, with the likes of Fastnet Rock and Exceed and Excel leading the way, it has been less easy for them to become established in America, where dirt racing is predominant.

Darley’s Australian champion and Horse of the Year Lonhro showed, however, that a top horse can get good offspring in both hemispheres. After standing three seasons at Jonabell for $30,000 in each year, Lonhro has gotten progeny that include 2018 Kentucky Derby hopeful Gronkowski. Lonhro was only the second Australian horse to reverse shuttle to the United States, following All American, who had stood at Arrowfield Stud in Australia before visiting Darby Dan Farm in Lexington. “We’ve been bringing American stallions down (to Australia) for years,” observed Darley Australia’s former chief Henry Plumptre in 2011.“There was no reason to think it wouldn’t work the other way.” Vancouver and Astern will have their chances to emulate the shuttle success of Danehill, but there may never be another like him in either hemisphere. Bred and raced by Prince Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms, Danehill became a top sprinter, winning the Group 1 Haydock Sprint Cup before going on to burst through barriers as the first stallion to sire over 300 stakes winners. The son of Danzig ruled Australia as leading sire nine times and also topped the sire list in England and Ireland three times and twice in France.

FOREVER SWAIN SHADWELL’S EUROPEAN C H A M P I O N T H R I V E S AT 2 6
A dense fog settled in at Shadwell Farm on another cold, early January morning. The previous day saw an ice storm roll through Lexington and the greater part of Kentucky’s bluegrass region leaving a treacherous combination of mud and icy slick spots on the ground. As Shadwell’s grooms carefully led the farm’s pensioners from their barns out to their paddocks, hints of daylight broke through the murk. While caution was taken to navigate each step, the journey was one the Irish-bred champion had taken several times across a quarter century of winters. As he entered his paddock and broke into an easy gait, the strides were not as long nor as fast as they were back in the day. But the white star, snip and socks on his hind legs are still unmistakable. And when passersby watch him stand majestically as he surveys his landscape, they may likely say, “that horse is somebody.”

t has been nearly twenty years since Swain last entered a starting gate and his stallion career ended more than six years ago. While he has traveled roads ranging from France to England and Dubai to Canada, he has called the Kentucky operation of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s farm home for 18 of his 26 years.
It all began on February 12, 1992 when Swain was born to Love Smitten, a Canadian-bred mare and winner of the 1986 (G1) Apple Blossom Handicap. His sire was Nashwan, the spectacular American-bred, British trained racehorse who had a season for the ages in 1989 when he made racing history by becoming the first horse to capture the 2000 Guineas, Epsom Derby, Eclipse Stakes and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. He retired that same year as European Horse of the Year and was sent to Shadwell Stud where he was syndicated for a European record of eighteen million pounds. Swain would become Nashwan’s most successful offspring. Bred in Ireland by Sheikh Hamdan’s brother, Sheikh Mohammed, Swain was sent to France as a 2-year-old to train with André Fabre. By the time 1995 and his three-year-old season rolled around, Swain was ready to hit the racetrack. Patience paid off as the horse exploded out of the gate by winning his first five starts including Group 2 and Group 3 victories during the summer months. Swain served further notice to the racing world when he ran an impressive 3rd among 16 in the (GR-1) Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in the fall. In the early summer of his four-year-old season, he journeyed to England and Epsom Downs for the first time and captured his first group one when he defeated eventual U.S.Turf Champion Singspiel by a neck in the Coronation Cup. Swain had demonstrated an affinity for travel that would last throughout his racing career. He also took on the very best of his generation. In addition to Singspiel, he challenged and defeated champions Pilsudski, Daylami, Helissio, Skip Away, Chief Bearhart and Victory Gallop across his four racing seasons. After finishing fourth in his second attempt at the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Swain shipped overseas to North America for the first time to compete in the 1996 Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Woodbine Racetrack where he and jockey Olivier Peslier rallied late to finish a respectable third.

At the end of 1996,Swain was transferred to Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin operation and trainer Saeed bin Suroor. His 5-yearold campaign began in the summer of 1997 and was highlighted by the (GR-1) King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot Racecourse. Swain entered Britain’s most prestigious open-age flat race as the 16-1 sixth choice in a field of eight including rivals Singspiel, Pilsudski and defending European Horse of the Year Helissio. Across a soft ground in wet and misty conditions, Helissio grabbed the lead with five furlongs left in the race but Swain, Pilsudski and Singspiel began to roll. Swain seized the lead two furlongs from the finish but Pilsudski and Singspiel challenged him to the outside with Helissio fighting along the rail. As the Ascot crowd roared, jockey John Reid drove Swain outside and held off Pilsudski to win by a length. Throughout a final time of 2:36:45 across 12 furlongs, Swain demonstrated what would be hallmarks across the bay horse’s career. He was tough. He was a fighter. He always showed up. He had heart. In 1998, Swain opened his 6-year-old and final racing season against a horse who was the ultimate warrior. His name was Silver Charm and America’s Champion 3-Year-Old Male of 1997 had finished first or second in each of his 12 career starts. Like Swain, Silver Charm was a battler who opponents found nearly impossible to pass once he took the lead and caught sight of the finish line. Both horses shipped to Dubai in March for the running of the $4,000,000 Dubai World Cup. For Silver Charm, it would be the first time in 36 years a Kentucky Derby winner had run outside the United States. And for Swain, it would be his 84

maiden venture on dirt after 16 career starts on turf. Silver Charm entered the race a prohibitive favorite among U.S. bettors (there was no betting in Dubai) while Swain was once again a longshot at 23-1 in the field of nine. Silver Charm shot out of the gate and followed frontrunner and fellow American Behrens closely with Swain sitting midpack until the top of the stretch when Silver Charm seized the lead. Silver Charm then repelled confrontations from France’s Loup Sauvage and Malek and as he approached the finish line, one final challenger came flying on the outside. It was Swain. In a dramatic finish, the two horses pounded toward the finish with Swain briefly grabbing the lead just before the wire, only to have Silver Charm fight back one more time to triumph by a nose in a photo finish. While the final result was in doubt, Swain’s jockey Mick Kinane looked over at winning jockey Gary Stevens and said, “Congratulations.” While it was a heartbreaking near miss for the six-year-old Swain to his younger rival, he earned $800,000 and the respect of Silver Charm’s trainer Bob Baffert who correctly foresaw the future. “I’ll take him [Swain] on again,” said Baffert, “but only in the U.S. because my passport is only good for a year.” Four months later, Swain made racing history when he became the oldest horse, before and since, to win the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the second horse (Dahlia ’7374) to win back-to-back editions of the race when he defeated

1998’s (GR-1) Epsom Derby champion Hi-Rise. He returned to turf his next time out and a trip to Leopardstown Racecourse in Dublin, Ireland resulted in his fourth Group 1 triumph when he captured the Irish Champion Stakes. In November, Swain returned to North America for the first time since 1996 to compete in the 1998 Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Churchill Downs. Trainer Saeed bin Suroor and the Godolphin team had been impressed with how Swain took to the dirt surface in Dubai and subsequently decided to enter him in the $5 million (G1) Breeders’ Cup Classic. One of the greatest fields in racing history included eight millionaires and the ten starters had won a combined 69 stakes races, 31 of which were grade or group one. And if this wasn’t enough, awaiting Swain would be his new nemesis, the incomparable Silver Charm. In front of a record crowd of 80,452, Skip Away was the post time favorite at 9-5 followed by Silver Charm at 5-2. At 6-1, a spirited Swain tossed jockey Frankie Dettori twice in the post parade, once after Dettori hit him with the whip. The race to come would be one Dettori would like to forget across an outstanding career.When the field hit the top of the stretch and turned for home, Swain was sitting third and began his charge, taking dead aim on leader Silver Charm. As Swain neared his rival, Dettori began a furious left-hand whip which caused Swain to drift further and further outside. Each stroke seemed to increase Swain’s problems and when Silver Charmed eyeballed
and drifted toward his competitor, the grey left a huge hole and never saw a fast-closing Awesome Again until it was too late. Awesome Again crossed the finish line three parts of a length ahead of Silver Charm who finished a neck ahead of Swain. Despite the loss, many thought Swain to be the best horse on this day including Sheikh Mohammed who said, “He is one of the best I have raced and he was the best here.” But it wasn’t to be. It was a disappointing end to an exceptional year and career as it was announced soon afterwards Swain would be retired to stud.The curtain had come down on a career that garnered the son of Nashwan earnings of $3,797,596. He placed in a remarkable 20 of 22 career races and received recognition for his 6-year-old season when he was voted the 1998 Cartier Award for Champion Older Horse. Stallion Manager Kent Barnes has been at Shadwell Farm in Kentucky since 1991 and recalls when Swain joined the farm and began his stud career in 1999. “I watched his career on the track even when he was just with Godolphin and wasn’t really associated with Shadwell,” says Barnes. “I followed him closely and I was obviously very excited when we learned he was going to be retired here.” Swain’s first crop resulted in the Dermot Weld-trained filly Dimitrova who won the 2003 (G1) Flower Bowl Invitational en route to a million-dollar career.That maiden crop also

produced multiple graded stakes winner Stanley Park and (GR3) Greenham Stakes champion Muqbil. Three years later, he sired multiple graded stakes winner Nasheej who captured the (GR2) May Hill Stakes at age two. Despite the promising start to his stallion career, a great racehorse can turn out to be a disappointing sire over the long term and this was the case with Swain. He spent his entire stud career in North America yet proved more successful as a stallion in Europe. Six of his 11 black-type winners, most notably Dimitrova, ran in Europe. “Reflecting back, if he had gone to stud in Europe initially and had been given the proper mares from the get go, he may have been an outstanding sire over there,” says Kent Barnes. “But at the time he retired, his sire Nashwan was already in place and we had the operation in Kentucky so we decided to give him a chance here after he proved himself on dirt.”
surroundings and fellow pensioned neighbors. Swain has seen them come and go with the passage of time. Shadwell tries to pair up the stallions and position them where they can see one other. For nearly ten years, Swain would race alongside the great Dayjur until the former English Horse of the Year passed away in 2013. More recently, Swain would watch 1998’s European Champion Two-Year-Old Aljabr until he died in February of this year at age 22. Today, the 26-year-old Swain prospers and is healthy for his age. Like the other pensioners, he is normally out in his paddock overnight as long as the weather cooperates. He is brought into the barn first thing in the morning and is fed and groomed before alternating between the paddock and the barn the remainder of the day until the evening turnout.
During his time at stud, Swain’s stud fee fell from $35,000 to $4,000. In 2010, the 18-year-old’s popularity in Kentucky had dwindled and he was relocated to Ascot Stud in Ontario, Canada. Swain was pensioned from stud duty in the fall of 2011 and returned to Shadwell at age 19 to live out the remainder of his days.
Swain will forever be remembered as one of the first world travelers. Godolphin was still in its early stages and he was one of the first horses they took around the world. He always brought his game no matter where he was running and on any surface. Look beyond the competitive glint in his eye, and you’ll see the heart of a champion. And find what those who know him so well have always known.

To create a platform to assist Thoroughbred owners with advice, help and sourcing appropriate service providers, as well as help with pedigree information and racing history. To encourage Thoroughbred series classes and prizes within classes at shows, to highlight and acknowledge competitive Thoroughbreds and their riders, in their chosen disciplines at all levels. 1. With the support and sponsorship of The Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association of South Africa and private Racehorse owners, Beyond Racing has produced winners’ sheets that are awarded for the top finishing Thoroughbreds at shows and in specific Thoroughbred classes. 2. The Racing Association donated an old Presidents Champion’s Challenge trophy to the Beyond Racing project, which was handed out for the first time at the Horse of the Year Show in February. 3. Additional promotional riding kit and clothing is available for sale to proud Thoroughbred owners, profits of which go towards funding further initiatives. To initiate a Thoroughbred series of competitions, for registered horses. To play a role in ensuring that horses retiring from the racetrack are registered as such with the NHRA and that these registrations are recorded accordingly, per the racing calendar. 1. By providing a platform to guide trainers and new Thoroughbred buyers we can potentially reduce the number of wrongly placed and ill-treated horses. While we accept that not every racing owner is an avid horselover, it is incumbent on trainers, managers and industry insiders to help to create an understanding and appreciation of the horse, encourage owners to get to know the individuals and to take interest in, and responsibility for their after racing careers. Whether the horse was a star on the track or not, it is essential for the industry and our horse welfare that every owner does the right thing for each horse. Without our horses there would be no industry! A few years ago the progeny of Al Mufti were highly sought after for show-jumping and polo (size dependant of course, since the show jumpers prefer 16hh and bigger, and polo players generally prefer smaller than 15.3hh. The current popular lines include the, sadly deceased Camden Park and Captain Al (who seems to be continuing his sire’s popularity as a producer of athletic sport horses). Also proving popular are the progeny of A.P Indy’s remaining sons, as well as Camden Park’s Jay Peg, Miesques Approval and Greys Inn. At the end of the day, after conformation, good temperament and athleticism will still win out over any popular pedigree. The calibre, heart and ability of the Thoroughbred has seen many excel beyond their racing careers in show-jumping, three phase eventing, polo, polo-crosse, showing and dressage as well as other leisure sports. Given the chance, the right grounding and transition to a new career, Thoroughbreds will continue to make their mark Beyond Racing!
