Proclaim Jesus Christ, Live in Christ, Serve!

Children Are More than Our Future Brothers and Sisters in Christ, OK, I’ll admit it, I am a sucker for cheesy 80s music. It’s not uncommon for me to be wandering the halls singing a tune or two from any band or artist from Boy George to Air Supply or something else. One line I love to say or sing at any occasion is from Whitney Houston’s, Greatest Love of All. “I believe children are the future, teach them well and let them lead the way.” Admit it, you sang along just now. That line has always made me pause for a moment and look at all children as hope for a new era. Recently in Jamaica, I was working with children who seemed to have no future. You see, their home was in a garbage dump. That dump was on fire. Yes that is correct, their home, a dump, was on fire. They were homeless. This broke my heart. We built homes and a play house for them. We loved them and they loved us. Now, not all the children lived in the dump, but many lived in places of extreme poverty. In that place of poverty, there was hope. Jesus lived there with them and you could see it. Back in the States I reflected on all the children St. Andrew’s tends to and cares for... in the Community Resource Center, the hundreds of children we have given homes to... in Martin Slovakia the hundreds of children that we work with to teach the Gospel... the program called “Treehouse” on our campus that we partner with for hurting teens... the many children and families in the Preschools of St. Andrew’s... our Sunday

CARE C ONNECTION –

School children and all the youth in grade school, middle school, and high school. Our staff works with hundreds of families and children in teaching the good news of Jesus Christ. All this reminds me that our children are not the future of the church only. They are the now of the church. We are in ministry with them and for them. Together praising and singing, healing and serving, we are church with them.

We remember the call in Matthew that Jesus said, “Let the children come to me.” As a church and as individuals let us welcome, invite, encourage, and engage children in our work to Proclaim Jesus Christ, Live in Christ, and Serve so that the whole world will know the healing power of Christ’s love.

Congratulations and Thank You! On behalf of the entire congregation of St. Andrew’s, congratulations to Jan Jacobson and Jill Wieland as they retire from the Half Day program at the Preschools of St. Andrew’s. The Prayer Chapel in the Sanctuary was dedicated on April 12, 2015.

THE PRAYER CHAPEL The Prayer Chapel of St. Andrew’s is a designated place for prayer. The chapel is located in the Sanctuary building and will be open for meditation, Bible reading, and prayer anytime the building is open. All are welcome to enter the chapel for prayer whenever a need should arise. What is prayer? At one level, prayer is a conversation with God. But prayer can go deeper than ordinary conversation because prayer does not necessarily require words. At its center, prayer is simply being present to the presence of God.

“To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.” Martin Luther

Survey Says...Thank You! Lift High the Cross Mission Appeal Recap From Your Church Council and Pastoral Staff

Three-Year Mission Appeal and 2012 Annual Stewardship Appeal

STORIES OF FAITH

Lift high the cross,

St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church

As the campaign comes to a close, we are in the process of making our final disbursements where the end result will be: the love of Christ proclaim,

Stay tuned for exciting ways in which we will be moving forward together in ministry. Thanks again for participating in shaping the future of St. Andrew’s.

ST. ANDREW’S LUTHERAN CHURCH

adore his sacred name

This survey is the beginning of a process by the Church Council and pastoral staff to create a fresh vision and plan to lead us toward the future God intends for our church. Results of the congregational survey will be central to our work. You'll be hearing more about survey results as we move through the process, but you should know that responses clearly indicate that St. Andrew’s is a healthy congregation interested in equipping our members for ministry and leadership, developing ministries that work toward hearing those broken by life circumstances, reaching new people and bringing them into the life of our congregation, and creating more opportunities for our members to form meaningful relationships. In the months ahead, we will focus on the opportunities and challenges you've identified as we position St. Andrew's to do even more to build God's kingdom here on Earth.

Lift High the CROSS till all the world

Thanks to all who participated in the Congregation Assessment Tool (CAT) survey. More than 1,100 people took the time to complete the survey. You are helping to shape the future of our church!

Thank you! To date we have received close to $2.4 million in contributions to the Lift High the Cross Mission Appeal. We have been able to accomplish so much with the gifts received.

Community Resource Center $450,000 – This allows us to sustain the future of the CRC, which means hundreds of families will be helped in their search for housing stability. TreeHouse Ministries $300,000 – This helped us kick off what is now the fastest growing and largest Treehouse program to date. Treehouse is a ministry that serves at-risk youth in our community with love and grace. Benevolence – given outside of our walls – over $200,000 – As a part of our mission we tithed whatever we received to help others outside of our own walls and community. Building and Grounds Improvements $1.4 million – These much-needed building upgrades in the Great Hall, Youth & Sports Center and Sanctuary were necessary to enable us to continue the excellent ministry we are dedicated to. We thank you for your generous spirit which allowed us to accomplish so much. This definitely helps us Proclaim Jesus Christ, Live in Christ and Serve, so that the whole world will know the healing power of Christ's love!

LED Video Displays to Enhance Traditional Worship We are excited to announce that we will have LED video displays installed in our Sanctuary in early June, in time for VBS this year. Temporary screens have been used at St. Andrew’s for several years for VBS, Confirmation and other programs The LED video displays are similar to a large flat TV screen, and are dark when not in use. We believe these displays will without a doubt enhance our Above is a depiction of how the new LED video displays will appear placed on the brick walls on both sides of the organ facade. traditional worship. Five years ago we started researching video projection, screen technology, and vendors. We learned a lot in the process and are thoroughly pleased with our decision to go with Daktronics. It truly is the best technology for our space, easiest to care for, and hands-down the best value. We look forward to the ways in which the LED video displays will augment our worship experience for all ages. In case you were wondering… A few questions you may have:

Will we be changing our style of worship in the Sanctuary on Sundays? No, the style of worship will not change. The video displays will truly enhance what we are already doing and will not dictate the way we worship together.

Will the shades need to be pulled to darken the room in order to view the displays? No. State-of-the-art technology allows viewing in virtually all lighting conditions. Consider outdoor LED displays at sports stadiums – similar or identical technology is used. Where will the displays be mounted? The LED displays will be mounted on the brick walls located along the outside of the organ pipes. When will we start using them? They will be installed mid-June and ready to go for VBS, June 22, so that thankfully we will no longer need to rent screens for this amazing week.

Birds, Bugs, and Butterflies How beautiful and wondrous is God's creation! Our (St. Andrew's) campus reflects these wonders and miracles throughout. To discover what The Lord has given us, the St. Andrew’s Environmental Stewardship Team (EST) will sponsor a series of nature hikes on our campus. Professional Naturalist Jim Malkowski will lead these hikes to find and identify the birds, the trees, shrubs and flowers, bugs and butterflies, and the natural cycles of water, air, and sun's effects. The first week in May is one of the best times for local and migrating birds, with as many as 25 species seen on or from our property. The first hike will be Saturday, May 9, 9 a.m. Meet in front of The Great Hall rain or shine, and bring your binoculars and any field guide to birds you may have. Children must be accompanied or 12 and older. A program for families will be given on Saturday, May 16, at 10 a.m. as part of Caring for Creation Weekend. This family program will be 60 to 90 minutes long and will feature some "touch and feel" experiences with a few live animals, as well as items like antlers, wasp nests, insects and mammal mummies, followed by a short "discovery walk." Suggested for kids 4 years old and up. Meet in front of The Great Hall at 10 a.m. Another series of nature hikes will be offered in October.

Do You Love to Garden? We are looking for some green thumbs to help care for our community garden, and other gardening upkeep on our beautiful campus. The garden helps provide fresh fruits and vegetables for guests of the Community Resource Center and Thursday Night Meals. Those who volunteer also can share in enjoying the fruits (and vegetables) of their labors. For more information or to get involved please contact Cynthia at 651-4260319 or chammel@goldengate.net.

Do You Like to Bicycle? The St. Andrew’s Holy Rollers is starting up for 2015 for people of all ages and abilities. The group rides Saturdays at 9 a.m. and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. from the Great Hall lot. The first ride will be Saturday, May 9. For more information call Dennis Lindeke at 651-426-9415.

CRC Tour Highlights Compassion and the Future Imagine what it would be like to ask for help. At the April 19 tour of the St. Andrew’s Community Resource Center (CRC), congregation and community members pondered this question and heard from a recent Resource Center guest about her experience of needing to ask for help. Faced with many hardships, reaching out was extremely difficult but necessary to secure shelter, food and other basic needs for her family. Our guest shared that what truly shaped her experience of asking for help was the response of the people who assisted her at various organizations. She shared how the compassionate response of CRC team members helped her feel “human” for the first time in a long time. Guests at the April 19 tour heard an update about the Community Resource Center and took a tour of the Hope for the Jour-

ney Home shelter in Oakdale. The Community Resource Center is beginning its fifth year of serving local community members in need. This past year, 87 families were provided with emergency shelter and 98 families were provided with rental assistance to help prevent homelessness. We are encouraged that we were able to help prevent homelessness for more families than we actually sheltered. Looking to the future, the Community Resource Center has plans to make a greater impact on homelessness. Our new “Keys Program” provides case management and a small rental subsidy for up to one year after a family is out of shelter. In addition, the St. Andrew’s Community Resource Center is working to create new partnerships with local churches to provide new emergency shelter options throughout our community.

Volunteer Needs Starting to think about your summer plans? Volunteer at the Community Resource Center! We are looking for youth and adult volunteers to assist with our young guests while their parents are looking for housing and jobs during the summer months. Volunteer times include Monday through Thursday for two shifts (9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 - 2:30 p.m.) each day from June 8 through September 3, 2015. Kids Thursday Night Craft Volunteer. Plan and facilitate crafts for kids from 5:45-7:15 p.m. at St. Andrew’s free Thursday Night Community Meals. This is a great volunteer opportunity for families, church youth groups, and Scout groups who would like to serve. Go to www.saintandrews.org/crcvolunteers to sign up for Community Resource Center volunteer opportunities, or contact Volunteer Coordinator Beth Smith at bsmith@saintandrews.org or 651-762-9148 with questions.

Community Conversation held at St. Andrew’s!

We are excited after hosting an event to address suburban homelessness; What C.A.N. We Do About Homelessness in the Suburbs? (C.A.N. stands for Churches and Communities Activating Our Networks). Attending the meeting were pastors and community leaders alike. It was a discussion of how, through collaboration, we can do so much more. It was a time to think about possibilities and all the different ways in which we, as a community, can come together to make a difference and discuss what we C.A.N. do to help with the homeless crisis. St. Andrew’s CRC continues to provide shelter for our neighbors in need, but we cannot do it all, and we cannot do it alone. The CRC originally opened our doors to “fill gaps” in service in our community, and that is what we continue to do. By “filling gaps,” we have sheltered 456 families in just four years. Our service area remains to be our surrounding eight to ten mile ra-

dius. The Ramsey County shelter waiting list grew to over 60 families at one point this past summer. The county is doing all that they can do, and we are doing all that we can do, but clearly we need more resources and more people willing to help and do what they C.A.N. It is time to come together and encourage more to be a part of the solution. We have a successful model of what a congregation can do, and we would like to share our experiences and be a support system for other churches and organizations that are interested in doing the same thing. We know first-hand how important it has been to the growth of the CRC to have other churches working in collaboration as partners. We are energized by the enthusiasm in the community! Great strides are being made. Together, we are making a huge difference, and we are excited about the endless possibilities.

We exist so that the whole world will know the healing power of Christ’s love. 11

M ISSION J AMAICA Mission Jamaica 2015…

MJ 2016! Jan. 23-30 Kingston Jan. 30-Feb. 6 Westhaven and Medical March 12-19 Kingston / Medical / Hope Valley / Calalloo Mews

St. Andrew’s had missionaries on three trips this year January thru March. We were a part of loving and bringing joy and Jesus to hundreds of children, enhancing the lives of families, caretakers, teachers, and being blessed ourselves. In the Montego Bay area we worked at WestHaven Childrens Home (took kids to church, rebuilt wheelchairs, fixed buildings, helped staff, played with kids, did some staff training, and even experienced some Special Olympics training), JA’Bode (built a house), and held Medical Clinics in four locations. “In Kingston, at Hope Valley Experimental School, we fixed a roof, built a playhouse, replaced screens, painted rooms, doors, cubbies, floors, running tracks, walls and even Anthony’s back…oops! Over in The Waterhouse District we held a clinic, seeing up to 200 people a day and fixed up the small shack where we served breakfast with Madge to kids on their way to school. Then we went to Calalloo Mews to do VBS and play with kids, enhance the kitchen at the school and yes, we also built a house, for Tamika and her six children. God is so great! Here are a few comments from participants… “I really liked being there and helping the people, but the poverty made me feel like they needed advocates that would help them have a better life.” Barb Gumatz “My daughter and I were able to take our first mission trip together this last January. Our time together serving the people at Westhaven Orphange was amazing! It pushed both of us out of our comfort zone and stretched us a bit. It was nice to have the

balance of serving and reflecting on our time there each night as we gathered as a group for devotions. We grew closer to each other as well as with the group we were with.” Cindy Kunkel “Charmaine at Copse remembered me from last year and we greeted with great hugs. The reading glasses that we brought were well received and comments like ‘I can read my prescriptions now,’ were very heart-warming. The clients at the mobile clinics are so patient and grateful for any little thing – makes you wish you could bring more for them. They have so little and we have too much! A very enjoyable experience at church on Sunday – a lovely elderly woman was totally uninhibited with dancing during the music at the service.” Gayle Huseth (Gayle is a nurse who served in Montego Bay)

M ISSION J AMAICA Special Guests at Worship May 16 and 17 Mr. Clive (Nazie) Anderson, Mission Jamaica's local foreman in Jamaica, will be at St. Andrew’s for the May 16 and 17 worship services to share his story with Mission Jamaica and Habitat for Humanity. He will serve with St. Andrew’s Habitat team the first week of June.

Creating Community to help those in need by Brad Brunfelt, who joined Pastor Mike Carlson and team as a first-time MJ-er in March of this year

An interesting and holy process happened this week. A resurrection of souls and an awaking of the Holy Spirit. This week, 26 people, the majority of whom were strangers, responded to need where it was seen. As a group we saw poverty in ways that few in our country get to. It was surreal and hard to think of the people and their children forced to endure in these conditions. The community that we became tried our best to meet the needs we were asked to, and to find new joy in our hearts doing so. Often we would ask hard questions about why this happened, or how this could be, but in the end, we loved and we gave what we could in so short a time to serve. We accomplished quite a bit – a new home for a family of eight, a repaired roof for a school, a fresh coat of paint on so many things. But there was more: We met with and befriended so many amazing people – saints of the modern day – who work day in and day out like we got to for our week there. We became community for a lively group of children, children often in great need of attention. We walked with them and tried our best to understand them and their needs. Many of us questioned ourselves in this process. We wondered if we gave enough, if we loved enough. We wondered if those who are there gave us more than we gave them, because they gave us so much. In that process, we asked that of our fellow missioners. Together we struggled with the hard questions that come from a place like Jamaica. Together we built a small community out of strangers. We worshiped, we sang, we worked, we played, we reflected, and we ate together. A place like Jamaica asked a lot of us; it demanded us to come together and become more than our individual parts. I speak for many when I say that God worked through us, the hands and feet of God, to become a team rooted in the Mission that is Jamaica.

We exist so that the whole world will know the healing power of Christ’s love. 21

H ABITAT

FOR

H UMANITY Let the Build Begin!

Exciting news! For the second year in a row you will have a chance to sponsor and build a Habitat for Humanity home in White Bear Lake! If you ever considered putting your faith into action by serving in this local mission, this is the year to do it. The house will be built at 1916 Eugene (near 96 and 61). Due to road restrictions, the new construction schedule is the weeks as follows: • June 1 – St. Andrew's • June 8 – Roof Raisers Church Coalition • June 15 – St. Andrew's • June 22 – St. Andrew's • June 29 – no work - 4th of July break • July 6 – St. Andrew's • July 13 – St. Andrew's • July 20 – St. Croix Valley Church Coalition • July 27 – St. Croix Valley Church Coalition Registration for Volunteers/Site Hosts/Lunches is on-line at saintandrews.org. (Click on Habitat link – if you have problems registering contact Dave Schrader 651-470-6303.) Women Build dates are July 6, 9, and 13. Fund-raising: The Cemstone Run/Walk For Others took place on Saturday, April 18 to help raise funds for the house. We need to raise $30,000 to sponsor materials used while we build. You can designate a gift to the Habitat for Humanity fund any time. If you donate directly to Twin Cities Habitat, please ask them to apply your gift to St. Andrew's (Mahtomedi) and inform Dave Engh so we will know if we have met our commitment. Here is what your gift to Habitat will buy: $10 = Box of Nails $50 = Low Flow Toilet $75 = Window $100 = Kitchen Sink $150 = Front Door $1000 = Wallboard $2000 = Flooring 2015 will be the 24th year St. Andrew's has helped a family in need to achieve home ownership. You may know that Habitat for Humanity is not a charity program. Homeowners make their down payment with 300-500 hours of “sweat equity” and then pay a zero interest mortgage for the actual cost of the house. Homeowners are carefully selected from applicants making between 30 and 60% of the area median income: nearly ten qualified applicants apply for each of the 50-60 homes built each

year by volunteers and Habitat families here in the Twin Cities. Our new homeowners will be Mimi Birhanu and her two children; Lidia (7 yrs) and Nathneal (5 yrs); they can’t wait to move! The children are excited to have their own rooms. Mimi moved from Ethiopia in the early 2000's and her goal has been to raise her children in a safe environment. The family likes watching family movies and going swimming. They also enjoy playing educational games. Mimi wants the volunteers to know she appreciates everyone who is volunteering. Owning a house means a lot to her. Join your St. Andrew's friends and volunteer with Habitat this summer! • Be a construction volunteer (must be 16 years old) • Be a site host • Bring lunch or provide snacks • Donate to the Habitat building fund • Habitat 500 bike tour - ride or sponsor riders from St. Andrew's Habitat500.org • Be the neighborhood family partner for the new Habitat family • Put this mission on your prayer list Contact Dave Engh 651-482-8642 for information on construction. For questions regarding food, beverages or being a site host contact Lynn Hamblin 651-653-1676. Would you like to join our Tuesday Crew? A group of dedicated retirees volunteer each Tuesday year-around.

Annual Golf FUNdraiser in Support of Vision Slovakia Monday, June 1, 2015; Indian Hills Golf Club in Stillwater St. Andrew’s will sponsor its 13th annual Vision Slovakia Golf FUNdraiser in support of the Lutheran Elementary School in Martin, Slovakia. The event will be held on Monday, June 1, 2015, at Indian Hills Golf Club in Stillwater. The focus for the 2015 event is “IT’S ABOUT THE CHILDREN.” All proceeds from this year’s event will again go toward the students and programs of the Lutheran Elementary School in Martin, Slovakia. The event is a scramble format with a 12 noon shotgun start. Registration begins at 10 a.m. with a group photo at 11:30 a.m. Individual registration is $165 and includes green fees, cart, range balls, banquet dinner, prizes, awards and fun. Sponsorships available for the FUNdraiser range from a tee or green sponsor sign ($200); a business team sponsorship, which includes four golfers and a tee or green sponsor sign ($800); and a corporate level ($2,500) sponsorship for area businesses and organizations. We will have auction and raffle items, and with 110 pre-registered golfers, Indian Hills will donate a one-year seasonal golf membership valued at approximately $5,000. If you wish to register for the event please contact Dianne Nash (651-762-9141) at St. Andrew’s or register online at saintandrews.org. Please watch the weekend bulletins in the coming weeks for further information and sign up Sundays in the Atrium. Your attendance will help keep miracles happening in Martin with the 514 children in grades one through 11 attending the Lutheran Elementary School.
