Church Street, Saxmundham Elaine Hawes, Headteacher, welcomes the opening of the Science and Community building Work has almost completed on Saxmundham Primary School's ambitious new Science and Community building, which has already come to be known by the affectionate name of The Log Cabin. At a ribbon cutting ceremony Elaine Hawes, Headteacher and Robin Potter, school governor officially opened the building on Monday 15 July after a rendition of Saxmundham Fanfare, which was written and performed on brass instruments by pupils at the school. The building was made from local materials using local contractors and the hallmark trees that make up the huge logs in the walls were sourced from within Suffolk. The building will be available to hire for community groups when it is not in use as a classroom for science based lessons. Local rector Rev Andy Wolton blessed the building before pupils, parents and supporters enjoyed refreshments and celebratory cake.

Talking Shop White Horse Rendham Celebrates 10th Anniversary
host to its 10th Beer festival. Earl Soham Brewery has developed a unique ale just for the occasion. It will be unveiled at the festival on 24 August. Paul and Lisa have received many accolades over the last ten years. These include being listed in the Daily Telegraph as Britain's Best Pub in July 2010 and being awarded a Gold Carbon Charter Award in 2012 for their work in reducing their carbon footprint by 50%.

Paul and Lisa Boswell celebrate ten years as landlords of The White Horse in Rendham this year. In this time they have made numerous improvements and have received a number of accolades from industry and customers alike.
Paul and Lisa put their success down to focusing on good simple food, good real ales and the goodwill and support of their many valued customers.
“On September 17 2003 we moved into The White Horse, Rendham,” Lisa explains. “On Thursday 18 we opened the doors to start serving customers and we have opened every evening since!” Lisa and Paul have made many changes to the pub over the years. They added boules pitches for outside games. After digging out the fireplace and back boiler they added a traditional wood burner. The new metal silhouette sign adds style while much needed renovation and insulation of the ladies loo now means that it can be the warmest room in the pub. The old barn was renovated and they are now working on a secret garden. Paul's love of real ale led the couple to focus on having ales available from a still at the back of the bar. In may 2006 Paul and Lisa were awarded Suffolk Rural pub of the month by CAMRA. Later this month the White Horse plays

Community News Leiston Film Theatre Studio Gets the Green Light The management of Leiston Film Theatre, with the backing of Leistoncum-Sizewell Town Council has plans to improve the 99 year old venue by introducing a multi functional studio at the rear of the building. It is intended to use the first floor extension as vital additional dressing room facilities, to enable more community groups, schools and organisations to use the building for their productions. The space could also be hired privately for functions, meetings, classes and exhibitions. Film Theatre manager Wayne Burns said: “The success of this proposal provides the ideal project to mark the Film Theatre’s 100 anniversary next year. There were many celebratory events balanced on this decision and we can now look forward to a magnificent year to commemorate what is a remarkable achievement.”

Summer is an ideal time to visit Saxmundham Museum to see its latest exhibits. Located next to the railway
bridge at North Entrance, it's unimposing from the outside but, just like the TARDIS in Doctor Who, it's bigger on the inside! It has five exhibition rooms each with much to tell and show of the history of Saxmundham and the surrounding villages of Benhall, Sternfield and Kelsale-cum-Carlton. There are objects showing the area's history, a small cinema where films can be shown of events affecting us, a courtyard of reconstructed shops which once graced Saxmundham’s High Street, and an exhibition room, which is changed frequently, displaying objects, mainly loaned by local people. It is open from 10.00am to 1.00pm on Monday to Saturday from the beginning April until the end of September. Do consider becoming a Friend by donating to the museum. Thérèse Coffey, MP Writing exclusively for the Town Herald Two pieces of good news for local residents due to the investment in energy along our green coast. Firstly the developers of Greater Gabbard, SSE and RWE are providing a £150,000 Dr Therese Coffey fund distributed through the Suffolk Foundation to support local community groups in Sizewell and Leiston over the next 6 years. Secondly, concerning Sizewell C, the Government has committed to provide community benefits to local communities throughout the lifetime of the power station. This is different from the previous one-off sum and will provide a significant amount of money over 40 years - a tremendous benefit to the local community alongside the creation of hundreds of long-term permanent jobs.
Good news for our local fishermen recently as the High Court ruled in favour of the Government reallocating fishing quota rights from big producers to our under-10m fleet. It was a triumph for our Fishing Minister, Richard Benyon, who has long been negotiating for a better deal for small scale fisherman in our coastal communities. I accept that it has been very tough for our local fishermen to maintain a profitable business. This decision provides real hope to get a fairer deal and for the long term survival of the small fleet. Fishing is an inherent part of our culture in Suffolk and has long been an important for our sense of identity, which was reinforced recently by the production of Peter Grimes on the beach. Saxmundham was part of the celebrations to honour the suffragists who set out on their famous walk 100 years ago, recently. As the first female MP for Suffolk I think it is important we remember the action that women took to secure the vote and I hope the re-enactment reinforces the message to all of us and inspires women to continue to break down barriers and realise their aspirations. Finally – as Parliament heads into the summer recess I will once again be embarking on my constituency tour stopping off in our towns and villages to talk with residents in community halls, pubs and shops. Community Garden Join us as we explore one of Saxmundham's secrets: the community garden
Saxmundham has no allotments but thanks to GreenerSax, Leading Lives and the Fromus Centre, there's a thriving community garden. This provides a smaller alternative to full allotments by offering members access to little raised beds and an enthusiastic community of local gardeners.
Fromus Centre and bring it back into use, making small plots available for local residents and Fromus Centre users to adopt. Grants from the Suffolk Foundation (for gardening equipment), Suffolk ACRE (for preserving and barbecue equipment and meat to cook) and support through the Waitrose green tokens scheme have made all this possible. The barbecue was a great way for members to meet and socialise On 6 July the members of GreenerSax who have plots in the Community Garden got together for a barbecue, together with those PASTEL clients who meet on a Saturday, and who also have plots in the garden. Penny Mackay who, with Cheryl Killen, coordinates the garden activities for GreenerSax said, “The garden was sunny with flowers, vegetables and the wild flower garden planted by PASTEL, and the barbecue took place in the gentle shade of the sensory garden. A real feast of barbecued meats, veggie burgers, and even barbecued pineapple and bananas was supplied together with salad and strawberries actually grown in the garden. We hope this will be the first of many happy gatherings of GreenerSaxers.� In partnership with Leading Lives, GreenerSax volunteers have helped to restore the community garden next to the

Time: 25 minutes, Serves: 4 Ingredients 500g organic beef mince 1 shallot, finely chopped 1 tsp Cayenne pepper 1 tsp celery salt 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce Few drops Tabasco sauce 25g breadcrumbs 1 medium Egg For the dressing 1 tbsp creamed or hot horseradish sauce Juice ½ lemon 2 tbsp half fat creme fraiche 1 tbsp half fat mayonnaise To serve 4 essential Waitrose White Sesame Seed Burger Buns 2 vine tomatoes, sliced Method Place the beef mince in a large bowl and add the shallot, Cayenne pepper, celery salt, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco, breadcrumbs and egg. Season with a pinch of salt and a black pepper and mix together well. Using wet hands, shape the mixture into 4 burgers and set aside in the fridge to chill for a few minutes while you make the dressing. Put the horseradish, lemon juice, creme fraiche and mayonnaise in a bowl and mix together. Heat the olive oil in a non-stick frying pan and cook the burgers for 5–6 minutes each side until thoroughly cooked and the juices run clear. Toast the burger buns. Spread a tablespoon of the horseradish
dressing on the base of each bun then top with a burger, slices of tomato and red onion.
Aubergine Bruschetta

Time 35 minutes, Serves: 6 Ingredients 2 medium aubergines 30 cardamom pods 5 tbsp extra virgin olive oil Juice of 1 lemon 10g flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped 12 diagonally cut slices granary baguette, about ½ loaf 100g Waitrose Extra Light Soft Cheese Method Remove the aubergines' tops and cut lengthways into 3-5mm slices. Set aside. Lightly crush the cardamom pods. Discard the green outer husks, leaving only the black seeds behind. Crush these lightly. Mix the olive oil, lemon juice and the chopped parsley. Add the cardamom seeds, season and mix together well. Now add the aubergine slices and toss in the dressing until evenly coated. Cook the aubergine slices in batches on the barbecue or under the grill for 3 minutes on each side, or until just tender. Keep the aubergine warm while toasting the bread until golden. Spread the toast generously with cream cheese then top with the aubergine slices. Drizzle with any remaining dressing or extra olive oil and garnish with a lemon wedge. 11

School Report Saxmundham Free School wins Free School Trust Sports’ Day
It was an absolute pleasure to be a part of our first ever Trust Sports’ Day on 10 July 2013. Hosted by our partner (Woodbridge School), Saxmundham competed against Beccles through a day of sporting activities. I was proud to be able to announce Saxmundham Free School as the winner of the Willmott Dixon Sports Cup and the first ever winner of a Trust Sports’ Day event! I was pleased to be able to announce Sam Grooms as the joint winner of the Mace Group Sports Cup. This is awarded for the best athlete during the Sports Day. Sam won alongside Jack Luckham from Beccles Free School. He will get to keep the cup for 6 months after Jack. I also want to note my thanks to the two sponsors of our Sports’ Day cups: Willmott Dixon and the Mace Group who are both involved in all the building works at Saxmundham and Beccles Free Schools. What an amazing first year we have had at Saxmundham Free School. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to work within such a supportive community and with such dedicated and amazing staff and students. Rob Cawley (Headteacher)
Olympic Legacy at Alde Valley Students at Alde Valley have got a new annual event. Prior to their traditional House Sports Day on 3 July they have continued with their 2012 House Olympic Team day on Tuesday 2nd July. Over 240 students had competed in either football or netball before 10.30! By 12.30pm a further 200 students had participated in either rounders, tennis or badminton. By the close of the school day more than 300 students had enjoyed a variety of relay events, the tug of war or the calmer atmosphere of the archery competition. It was a fantastic and competitive day which continued on Wednesday morning with Year 7 and 8 House Indoor athletics whilst Years 9 and 10 compete in the traditional field events. This whole sporting feast culminated with the House track events in the afternoon. On Friday 5 July the golfers in the school competed at Thorpeness in the House Golf Competition. Earlier in the week on 1 July Alde Valley B team Billy Newton, Molly Newson and Ollie Cooper won the Stableford team competition at Diss Golf course in the Suffolk Schools' Championship

Notice in connection with the sale of Rosehill Wood Dear Town Herald The Trustees and Members of the Suffolk Naturalists’ Society (SNS) have agreed that they wish to sell Rosehill Wood, an area of about 14 acres of mixed woodland once attached to Rosehill house on the A1094 at Farnham, Suffolk IP17 1JU; land given to the Society under the will of Mrs Frances Elizabeth Rivis. It forms a charity known as ‘Trust property held in connection with Suffolk Naturalists' Society’ (charity no. 2060841). The sale is subject to a new Scheme being drawn up. The land is defined as designated land, so SNS Trustees must, before entering into a contract for the disposal, give this notice under section 121 of the Charities Act 2011. It would be sold freehold, through a land agent. Car Park For Sale Dear Town Herald SCDC have decided to sell off the Leiston High Street car park and associated land. As they are also the Planning Authority the purchaser shouldn't have any problem with getting a change of use consent! 14
The site was originally purchased by, and given to, the Leiston Council and therefore it morally belongs to the Town. So what is going to happen to the proceeds of the sale? Will the money be spent on much needed improvements to the Town's infrastructure? Bike for sight Dear Town Herald I am running a sponsored bike ride on 28th September. It is in aid of Fight for Sight, the main charity in the UK dedicated to funding eye research into all eye disease to prevent sight loss. The 27 Mile route starts at Aldeburgh Moot Hall and takes in Thorpeness, Aldringham, Leiston, Eastbridge, Dunwich, Westleton, Middleton, Theberton and finshes at Aldeburgh Community Centre.
