PRESIDENT’S RAMBLINGS Joe McQueen

Scholarship Update: Honors, and Deserving Students (Editor’s Note: Gary Koppang assisted with this month’s message on the Scholarship Program.)

S

ome months ago (November 2015), I wrote about the Club’s new initiative to provide three $1,500 scholarships to Automotive Technology students at metro-area community colleges. Because the foundations at each of the colleges are better prepared to award scholarships, after all that is what they do, Automotive Technology class at St. Helens High School. Photo courtesy Portland Community College. we decided to allow them to select the student. Here is an update on the ORPCA Scholarship Program. The foundations have announced their 2016 recipients: Clackamas Community College has awarded their $1,500 scholarship to Tanner Burdik, and Mt. Hood Community College made its award to Jeff McCarter. Here is one of the recommendations Jeff received: “I am writing this letter as a recommendation for you to consider Jeff McCarter for your scholarship program. Jeff has been under our employ for two years and I have been his manager for that entire time. Jeff’s responsibilities at Stevens Auto include; mechanical removal and reinstallation of various components in a given vehicle, limited diagnostics of vehicles to find faults with drivability and other customer concerns, and any shop maintenance as required. I have developed a friendship with Jeff while training him to become more independent with his responsibilities here. As his boss and friend, I have found that Jeff exhibits a very determined attitude towards any project we assign him. He has a thirst for understanding and knowledge of the procedures that go with the various mechanical challenges he faces, while still being able to formulate his own way of completing a task and still observing any restrictions or standards of conduct. I would like to thank you for your time while I discussed Jeff and some of his qualities and values. I highly recommended him for your scholarship program ...” Portland Community College awarded its scholarship to Jason Gozdecki. The Foundation tells us that Jason came to PCC after an 11 year career as a quality engineer. He was laid off in 2014, and while he was looking for work he did some thinking about what he wanted his next career to be. He knew the manufacturing field had limited open jobs and so he reached out to Worksource for some career guidance. That’s when he realized his passion for hands-on work and working with cars. He’s always worked on his own vehicles, so he took the leap to make it his career.

8

Anzeiger / October 2016

Jason Gozdecki will be starting his second year with PCC this year, and he has continued to maintain a 4.0 GPA so far. He has been consistently enrolled full-time at PCC as he works towards receiving his Automotive Service Technology degree. His goal is to finish his degree at PCC, test for the ASE certifications and one day run his own auto shop. The PCC Foundation is proud to offer Jason Gozdecki the ORPCA scholarship. We’ll provide more information about these three in an upcoming issue. High School Automotive Equipment Grant: Working through the Spring and Summer 2015, the scholarship committee decided to expand its original charge to include a $500 grant to one of the region’s 16 high schools with an automotive service program. The grant will allow them to purchase needed equipment, tools and supplies. Late last March, the scholarship committee reviewed the grant applications. Because we had a couple of outstanding applications, we awarded two $500 grants. One was made to The Dalles High School and the other to St. Helens High School. Both schools wrote nice thank you letters and explained what tools they are buying. In 2017, we will award another grant to an area high school. The application period opens February 1, and closes March 20. We have expanded the number of eligible high schools to include those in southern Washington since they are in our region. Eligible schools (15 in Oregon and six in Washington) include: Alliance High School at Meek Campus, Aloha High School, Benson High School, Canby High School, David Douglas High School, Estacada High School, Gresham High School, Hillsboro High School, McNary High School, Reynolds High School, Sabin-Schellenberg Professional-Technical Center. Sandy High School, Silverton High School, St. Helens High School, Tigard High School, Battle Ground High School, Clark County Skills Center, Kelso High School, Prairie High School Stevenson High School, and Woodland High School. If you have contact with any of these schools please encourage them to look for the application after the holidays. And something special from Eric Underwood: “Thought that you all might want to know that I attended a special event tonight at Clackamas Community College where ORPCA was recognized as an honored contributor to the CCC Foundation scholarship program. I was proud to represent the club and just want to say thanks to all of you for making this happen.” Reporting for the Scholarship Committee, Joe McQueen n

“You’ve Made a Huge Difference in My Life ...” I was extremely happy to learn that I am a recipient of the Oregon Region Porsche Club of America Scholarship. Thank you for your generous financial support towards my education! The automotive industry will be my second career. I had a career in manufacturing, but that ended before I started at PCC. I used the time off of work to evaluate where my career was going and what I wanted to do with my life. I decided to follow my interests and enroll in PCC’s Automotive Program. The classes have been

very interesting and challenging. I even enjoy doing the homework! (really) I plan to enter the automotive industry as a technician and then pursue opportunities to learn how to run a small business. I feel that I have found a good fit for my second career. This scholarship will pay for many of the credits and fees for the next two terms, which will help reduce the amount of money I need to borrow to complete the automotive program at PCC. That will make it easier to focus on classes instead of thinking about my financial situation. You have made a huge difference in my life. Thanks again! Sincerely, Jason Gozdecki

MEMBER’S MESSAGE Joe Kelly

Self-Announcing Porsches? (Editor’s Note: We are always happy to feature members’ Porsche anecdotes. To submit an article, email it to editor@ oreconpca.org.)

W

ell, self-announcing was not an option on any Porsche that I know of, but some models can develop that propensity. My 1996 993 did so recently ... At low speed turns, the horn would go off without any input from me. I put the car back in the garage and Photo 1 went on a mid-week drive in another car. I sat with Larry Hannan at our drive’s lunch stop and mentioned the horn problem. Larry smiled and said that his 993 had that problem too. In his case, the horn went off when he applied the brakes. I imagine he didn’t pull up behind many State Troopers at stop signs! He had his repaired at Matrix Integrated. So off I went to Matrix and met up with George. He explained that cars Photo 2 with air bags could have the problem, especially if they were older than 15 years. The air bag is heavy, around 10 lbs., and is mounted in the center of the horn module. The air bag module is secured by mounting bolts at the four corners of the bracket (Photo 1). The Photo 3 bolts are suspended in rubber grommets at each corner. As the rubber grommets age they weaken and start to sag. If the air bag module touches one of the four nodes on the horn bracket (Photo 2) the horn will sound. The repair consists of ordering and installing a new aluminum bracket. George stated that he has seen the problem in 993s, Boxsters, and other Porsches with air bags. So if your Porsche starts to self-announce itself, give Matrix a call and visit George (Photo 3). n

September, 1986’s Gorgeous Covered Bridge Tour by Jim Jacobsen / From the November, 1986, Anzeiger unday, September 14, was the Covered Bridge Tour. The group up North met at Nyberg Inn under somewhat of a foggy morning. Fourteen cars headed South out of the fog into Jeffers, OR, where we met up with the rest of the gruop and sunny skies. Eighteen cars left to begin the trip. A real nice turnout! (You’ve heard it before, there’s nothing more exciting than seeing all the cars in a line running down the road. You really have to be there!) Each bridge had its own charm. Some were better-kept than others, but were all, it seemed, freshly painted. It was mentioned that our next tour would come from another format. I tend to agree. (This one was taken out of a book.) Along with our tour, there was a motorcycle club running the opposite direction. There must have been hundreds! At one point, both clubs converged on the same bridge! Talk about chaos! We exchanged conversation while one bike club member was seen having his photo taken in a red 944. I’m sure it made his day. It was fun, but a very busy corner.

On to our next stop, lunch! Which came later than we were ready for. A real nice place. The picnic area was right out of a Currier & Ives postcard! An old (circa 1800) water wheel next to a covered bridge. All of this along what looked like a great swimming hole. Thanks to Bill Arnett for all his much-needed expertise. I love touring and have learned alot this past year. There are still many more tours to run, and certainly more cars to get involved. This was my last planned tour this year. So untill next spring, keep pushing and happy motoring! Thanks to each and everyone who came along. And again to Ben Shuford from Lincoln City, who by the way, has a great little tour planned to the coast this spring ... n

Wheelkraft NW Tech Session: Wheels in the Rain Story and Photos by Harold Klein

I

was really glad I signed up for the Wheelkraft NW event scheduled on September 17. It was a fascinating event, well attended in spite of the steady rain. ORPCA VP Eric Underwood and owner Pat hosted the event at the Wheelkraft facility in Vancouver, WA. Wheelkraft is well known in the high end retail car businesses here in the greater Portland/ Vancouver area, reviving and/or customizing wheels for these dealerships right at their location with their mobile fleet or using their main shop for bigger repairs. They also do custom work for individual car owners. n

Run to Florence: Relief from the Heat on a Great Tour Story and Photos by Peg Ryan

F

riday morning, August 26, arose with sun and heat. We were glad to start out early and beat some of the heat. We had 14 cars including a Red Z06 Corvette and something we named the Red Mazdaromeo! We also had two Dianes, two Dons, two Erics, two Joes and two Randy’s! Eric Freedle, the tourmeister, took us out on the first leg of this adventure, headed to Lincoln City with some very fun back roads and lots of smells—ripening apples, grapes, cows—making this a very interesting drive. Our rest stop was at Sheridan Peak Overlook, where the elevation was approximately 2800-2900 feet, as per the GPS. Lunch was at Mo’s in Lincoln City—we got there early enough that there was no line and they were ready for us. It was a fun lunch and not too warm. Above: Sheridan Peak Overlook, first rest stop—2,800+ feet—nice and cool!. Below: More from the first rest stop. After lunch we headed back into the heat. It hit 96 at the rest stop, Ellmaker State Park, near Philomath. We cooled down to 56 degrees into Waldport on the wonderfully twisting Alsea Highway (OR-34)! Then it was Highway 101 to Florence. Our thanks to Bill Munson for designing such a great route! We stayed at the River House Inn in Florence, a wonderful small hotel. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone headed for Florence. We all

relaxed and then headed to dinner. Our dinner was at the Surfside restaurant at Driftwood Shores. We had a lovely cocktail hour with hors d’oeuvres (wonderful shrimp) and then dinner. Fun and yummy! The rest of our weekend in Florence was open. This was quite fun. The hotel was very near the old town Florence, so it was easy to walk up to the Saturday market there and enjoy shopping and bumping into some of our Porsche travel companions. My husband and I then drove up to the Heceta Head Lighthouse and hiked around. This is a lovely lighthouse. Others went and did a dune buggy ride! There are a number of nice restaurants and a number of us ended up at Bridgewater Ocean Fresh Fish House for an amazing dinner. On Sunday we had a number of options for the route home! Our thanks to Eric Freedle for all the work for this great tour. Check out the fun pictures from the tour! n

Clockwise from top: Sand castle at Mo’s! River House Inn—our home for two nights. Siuslaw River Bridge— just up the river from our hotel. Eric Freedle ready for the buggy! Don Clinkinbeard—ready to ride. Off and running ... See ya!

September Arrive & Drive: Headed North Story by Peg Ryan / Photos by Bruce Jones

S

aturday September 10 was a beautiful day—not too hot, and lots of sun! We left from our north location at Shari’s Restaurant near PIR, and then headed north into Washington. We had a lot of cars for this Arrive and Drive. The drive planning was a challenge because one of the bridges we planned to cross was closed for paving for the weekend. Tourmeister Neil had to re-work the whole route because of this! We headed up I5 and into Ridgefield, Washington. and over to La Center, where we had our first stop at the Casino there. Then we were off to the Lewis River area. We drove out to the south of the river, came back into Woodland, and then traveled north of the river to the Lewis River Golf Course. We had a great Mexican lunch there and celebrated Joe McQueen’s birthday. The cake Ginny brought up was a surprise to Joe and it was yummy! n

AX #8 at PIR South Paddock: Bobby’s Birthday Run Story by Todd Averitt / Photos by Harold Klein

A

nother month has passed, and with it the end of the 2016 ORPCA Autocross Championship season. We couldn’t have asked for a better day. The weather was sunny and but not too hot, our attendance was good but not over crowded, and it was an event celebrating the 25th Birthday of a young man well known to our autocross competitors, Booby Landsberg. A few clarifications before we get to the Championship Points Results: First, Sunday, October 30, 2016 will be our Members and invited guests only Autocross. It will be fun runs and count towards nothing but a good time. Second, this will be the LAST autocross of the season. There is no November ORPCA Autocross event planned or scheduled after this one. If it is still on your calendar get a new calendar. This was originally scheduled when the idea of a Rainbonnet was in the works. And third, there will be no BBQ. See second clarification above. Alright, back to the last ORPCA Autocross. How about the course you may ask. If you ran with the ORPCA in 2012 you will remember this course as the one you had to make a three point turn to get to the starting line. It was designed by Kathey Smalley and Bill Thorpe. The fun of the course hadn’t change a bit. The starting line location did. We think for the better. Everyone got 8 runs. We’ve found that this is about the maximum number of runs most competitors can handle and still improve without it becoming a practice session. Besides all that adrenalin administered in more than 8, 40 second doses could lead to the dreaded ARS (Autocross Rush Syndrome). Now on to the final results of the 2016 ORPCA Autocross Season: M01: Josef West won the class in his blue Porsche 924. Greg Olsen who was my personal favorite to take it all

20

Anzeiger / October 2016

had an unfortunate mishap with his Carrera on our public highways. He is fine, his Carrera is another story. I01: Barry Cogut pretty much ran away with this class in his Cayman GT4. Now Ryan Davis and Cary Kutter’s battle for second came right down to the end. Ryan took it by one point. Pete Libke a newcomer to autocrossing showed outstanding potential for next season. P01: Harry Danberg, Harry Danberg, Harry Danberg. Harry gets his beautiful 1973 Targa’s suspension tuned, the engine rebuilt and everybody runs away. Yeah Harry maybe you really are just that good. We luv-ya man… P02: The Eric and Jeff show. Well mostly Eric Freedle known from now on as E1 took it all. E1 still knows how to dance with his Carrera and put on some serious clinic’s for the rest of us. P03: This was a remarkable class. It’s one thing to have some high priced toys competing and yet another when those cars are driven by some excellent talent. Anson Lytle took the class by 2 points over Clay Horste who was only 4 points ahead of Eric Hoff (E2). Aamir Zakaria had a tough season and hope he will be able to join us next season on a regular basis. S01: Dr. B crushed it (that’s Dr. Bryce Bederka). Bryce and Aimee Horste drove Boxster’s, Joey Yin drove a Macan S, and Nathan Waldbauer drove a Panamera. Some very interesting Porsches made up this class. I you think Joey Yin’s Macan or Nathan’s Panamera were slow or not light on their feet? Then you had better make it out to watch these fellows perform. It is stunning. S02: Chuck Jarvie and Sean Vanderheiden really had it going this season. Both these fellows not only drive to the max at each event, they have been helping put together each event that we enjoy so much. Great driving fellows and thanks for all the help and support this season. S03: Mix expensive toys with diehard competitors and what do you get? It’s our S03 class. It is a joy to watch these never say die friends go at it event after event and never lose the understanding that this event is for fun. Thank you Tong Qi (winner), Mark Qandil, Moses Qandil, David Kosa, and Dana Jacobsen for your great attitudes and those ever present smiles. NPAS: Jemal Mfundshi, Subaru Legacy. You made it to the top congratulations! (Continued on next page)

AX 8, CONTINUED (Continued on next page) NPAM: Tough class, excellent drivers, and the winner won by a single point. Tyler Haywood won, Bill Sessions, Tom Mill, Josh Maixner, and Alex McGraw. NPFS: Heather Spriggs, Volvo C30R, her toy of choice and the class winner NPFM: This is the class of “all over the board”. Chris Mitchell takes the class with a built Honda Civic Si, 3 door hatch. It even includes ground effects panels. On the other side Andres Ferrer and Eric VanDyke drive their little rocket Neon’s. These guys love to drive and they drive the heck out of these cars. Congrats to all of you. NPRS: Mitchell Truong, Subaru BRZ, took the class championship in near perfect fashion. Sammy Learn took second place with Nathan Waldbauer, Ryan Mauch, and Noah Krygier following. NPRM: You have to be a serious autocrosser to even think about stepping into this class. It was a battle from the first event and only ended this last week end. Every one of these competitors should feel great about themselves and congratulations from me. Josh Hopwood winner, Steve Savas second, Dan Bullis, Andy Hsiao, Joey Klein, Chris Daley, James Casselton, Ryan Sauer, Carl Tanner, Mathilda Klein, Eric VanDyke, and Alberto Chipres. Great season everyone! That’s how it went in 2016; some day’s sun, some rainy, new venues, and old ones. Harold Klein caught the essence of nearly all of them and thank you Harold Klein. Our ORPCA Awards Banquet will be October 23, 2016 at Ernesto’s Restaurant. If you haven’t signed up yet please do so soon. Now is the time for me to thank all the volunteers again who made this a wonderful season. Additional thanks to the organizers, those who handled the timing trailer, announcing, and the run times, the trailer towing crew, the course designers and their wickedly fun ways, the cone tossers and shaggers, safety and waiver folks, starter and grid workers; to all THANK YOU! n

Wrapping Up the 2016 Autocross Season

A

utocross (also called “Solo”) is a timed competition in which drivers navigate one at a time through a defined course on a sealed surface. It is a form of motorsports that emphasizes safe competition and active participation. As the season begins, it’s time we spread the word about the many changes for the 2016 ORPCA Autocross season. All the details can be found on our ORPCA website. 1. If you are an ORPCA/PCA member, you can register at any time for any event. You must pay for each event you sign up for online to be considered pre-registered. Also be sure you read up on our Championship Series Pass before you register by clicking here. 2. All ORPCA Championship Points events are limited to 70 pre-registered participants. 3. Without a Championship Series Pass you will NOT be eligible for Championship Points. What’s even better is the pass will actually save you money. Click HERE for all the details on how to purchase yours. 4. Course design, setup, teardown, and control will performed by a Course Committee composed of a “Course Designer,” an “Adjuster” and a Safety Steward. We would like you to sign up and help. This way we will have a different Course Designer for each event. For more information see “Getting Involved with Autocross” click here. 5. Complete Porsche Car Classing, changes to our car numbering system, 2015 Parade Competition Rules (PCR’s), car tech criteria, and working requirements are can be found by clicking here. 6. We have set up a Steering Committee, whose charter is to bring fresh ideas to the table, explorer new venues, and become expert in all stages of running and maintaining an autocross program 7. This season there will be multiple two-day events, ORPCA/PCA member appreciation events (events for ORPCA/PCA members only), new venues, barbeques and multi-Porsche Club events. 8. So you have an idea? Contact anyone of our Steering Committee members and get the ball rolling. We already have input for 2017 events in Astoria to events Troutdale and beyond. We would prefer your contact method be via email. 9. Finally, the best news of all is event costs are actually going down. We felt that since maintenance and early Porsche buy-in costs are going through the roof it’s the least we could do, really, the least. n EVENT/CPE* DAY/DATE MEMBER REG. NON-MEM. REG. rab your camera, and take your best shot. Send in your best Porsche-related photo, and it may appear on an upcoming cover of Anzeiger, the Oregon Region’s award-winning magazine. These amazing cover photos were subsmitted by members like you! You could be next. Remember that the cover is vertical, not horizontal, so shoot accordingly. That’s Portrait if you are a technical type. If you aren’t, that means turn your camera sideways. Remember that many digital cameras and software compress the image so much that it becomes unprintable when we enlarge it. To not waste your time and perfect photo, set your camera for its highest resolution. That’s the one that uses the most memory. The fame: Winners will receive major credit in the magazine, so all your Porsche friends will know how great a talent you are. Send your entries to: Harold Klein, Photo Editor, photoeditor@orpca.org.
