LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

W

elcome to the 2016-2017 issue of Sussex County magazine. This is my opportunity to brag about some of the people and places in this special corner of northwestern New Jersey. Let’s start at the top eastern corner of the county, where Mountain Creek’s oasis of outdoor activity draws adventure seekers from near and far to enjoy its slopes, waterpark, mountain biking trails and zip line. More is coming too, with a new owner who has some big plans. At the western corner of our county and supporting our efforts to expose locals and travelers alike to the wonders our region, is the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Their promotion of the Scenic, Wild Delaware River online, via an interactive MapGuide (DelawareRiver.NatGeotourism.com), is a collaboration between National Geographic, partner organizations from New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, and the National Parks Conservation Association. I am very proud of the Chamber’s involvement in this project and the opportunity I’ve had to serve on their Executive Board. Partnerships are vital to our success as a community and the Chamber is unwavering in its belief that companies are stronger when they work together. This magazine promotes many of the businesses across the county and highlights some including one such partnership between the Mohawk House (Sparta, NJ) and area farmers that’s reaping delicious results. A new edition to our magazine this year is Member Shoutouts. These Shoutouts offer our members an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate fellow Chamber members who’ve provided exceptional service and/or an exceptional customer experience. I hope you enjoy our publication and encourage you to discover Sussex County and all it has to offer.

EXPO T

he Sussex County Chamber of Commerce EXPO has become as much a part of the fall landscape as the changing leaves. Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2017, EXPO is one of the Chamber’s annual signature events. Begun in 1992 as a small, business-to-business trade show held at Perona Farms in Andover, EXPO outgrew its location within 10 years and moved in 2003 to Crystal Springs Country Club, Hardyston, where it has remained ever since. The change to the Country Club, a beautiful, spacious location off of Route 94, provides attendees with multiple rooms and floors of exhibitors to browse through with decadent food stations set up throughout for all attendees to enjoy (and cash bars as well). Admission to EXPO has been free to the general public since its inception. Newton Medical Center, a division of Atlantic Health Systems, has

The region’s most dynamic annual business event free and open to the general public been a Main Event sponsor almost from the very beginning. “Newton Medical Center has been committed to our EXPO for many years and the Chamber is extremely proud to have their support,” says Tammie Horsfield, Chamber President. The primary goal of EXPO is to provide an opportunity for Sussex County residents to meet local business people and expand their knowledge about the goods and services available in the community. Supporting local business is crucial says Horsfield, especially when economic times are challenging. “Residents need to know that where they spend their money matters,” she explains. “Money spent at independent, local companies trickles over to other local businesses, and then into revenue that supports the local community including our schools, parks and libraries.” Each year over 125 local professionals, businesses and organizations set up impressive displays and lay out colorful brochures, promotional give away items and free samples as they prepare to promote themselves to each other and area residents. Life Massage & Yoga Center in Wantage, is a frequent participant. She says of the event, “Expo is a great way to connect with our clientele outside of the center and a convenient way to meet new clients in a fun atmosphere.” Horsfield always refers to EXPO as an “elegant” trade show. And it is! From the graciously appointed exhibit areas replete with soft carpeting, chandeliers and delicate wall coverings, to room names like the Emerald Ballroom, the Saratoga room and the Rotunda, to the white glove service at the food stations, the event welcomes attendees to relax and enjoy interacting with company representatives at their exhibits. Industries typically represented include health care, home improvement and remodeling, senior services, interior decorating, solar energy, landscaping, performing arts, financial services, health and wellness businesses, veterinarians and other pet services. The Sussex County Sheriff’s Office is usually present too, promoting its Crime Stoppers program. So is the Sussex County Fairgrounds, giving residents a sneak peak at the new attractions coming to the NJ State Fair and raffling off free tickets. “EXPO is different each year,” says Horsfield. “We are always trying to offer new things to both our exhibitors and the general public.” One of those news things is flu shots, offered onsite for the past two years. One of the most beneficial aspects of EXPO for area businesses, besides the chance to promote their company

to the public, is the opportunity to network with other local businesses in the area to build relationships and foster possible partnerships. “There is an exhibitor-only reception from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m.” says Horsfield. “This is the time when company representatives relax, having something to eat and talk shop with each other before we open the doors to the public.” It’s this incentive she says, that “keeps companies participating each year.” Mark Gruber, Esq., of Gruber, Colabella and Liuzza in Hamburg, NJ, and a recent EXPO exhibitor, described his experience, saying, “The Sussex County Chamber of Commerce Expo topped our expectation. From the parking to food service, organization, facility, and atmosphere, the environment was perfect for showcasing our legal services to both vendors and the public.” Reenee Casapulla, Recycling Coordinator & Safety Officer at the Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority, agrees, “Participating in the annual Chamber Expo has provided the Sussex County MUA with numerous opportunities to highlight recycling activities for the county, meet local residents, network with local businesses and have a good time doing it!” The 2016 EXPO date is Monday, October 24. Doors open to the general public at 4:00 pm and close at 8:00 pm. Free shuttles from the parking lots run continuously through the evening. More information about EXPO, including exhibitor contracts, is available at www.sussexcountychamber.org.

with National Geographic A PARTNERSHIP WITH NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC The website is a collaboration between National Geographic, more than 30 partner organizations from nine counties in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, and the National Parks Conservation Association. We are working together across state and county lines, to inform and attract visitors who are interested in the Scenic, Wild Delaware River region’s nature, history and culture, and to promote economic and environmental vitality for our communities. Our region boasts three national parks along our 150-mile stretch of the Delaware River: the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River, Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, and the Middle Delaware Scenic and Recreational River. In many ways, the parks anchor our region’s recreational offerings and the quality of our natural environment. BEYOND THE WEBSITE —A GEOTOURISM INITIATIVE What we’re doing together is promoting “geotourism,” a name that National Geographic coined a while back to describe an approach to travel and to tourism development and promotion that leverages and sustains a destination’s unique and special characteristics. As a founding member of this initiative, the Sussex County Chamber of Commerce helped to create the Scenic, Wild Delaware River Geotourism Stewardship Council. Our 30+ members collaborate to promote our region’s natural, historic and cultural attractions to potential visitors seeking authentic travel experiences. We also work together to protect and enhance those values through sustainable economic development

Stream flows through most of County and feeds the Delaware River

I

f you have had the pleasure of exploring the western portions of Sussex County, you likely crossed one of our local treasures: the Flat Brook and its many tributaries. With its headwaters above Sawmill Lake in High Point State Park, this stream traverses nearly the full north-to-south length of Sussex County, flowing some 22 miles before finally joining the Delaware River at the Walpack Bend in Flatbrookville. The river’s two main tributaries, the Big Flatbrook and Little Flatbrook, flow together just below Bevans, NJ. South of this confluence, the stream is simply known as the Flat Brook. Paved roads run adjacent to much of the Flat Brook, but other areas can only be reached via semi-maintained dirt roads or on foot over hiking trails, adding to the remote and peaceful environment that seems a world away from the bustle of everyday life. Varied terrain provides the Flat Brook with a multitude of characters, ranging from fast riffles and runs separating narrow rocky pools nestled deeply in the valley and lined by dense rhododendrons and hemlocks, to shallow flows and slow, deep pools shaded by pine and hardwood forests, and then on to meander through open land and guarded by patches of wild rose and brambles in the wider valley floor. A walk along even some of the most remote portions of the brook encounters

old stone walls running through what are now heavily wooded areas, harking back to a time when much of the area was cleared of trees and covered by farmsteads. However, now most of the Brook and its tributaries reside in state or federal park lands, providing protection from development, and allows for one of the cleanest and most natural streams in the state. These pristine conditions, along with some of the coolest mid-summer water temperatures of any stream in New Jersey, allow the Flat Brook and its tributaries to sustain a year-round populations of both wild and stocked trout. This bolsters claims that these waters represent the state’s premiere trout fishing streams. The dark-bodied, colorfully-speckled native brook trout inhabit the area as they have for millennia. Stocked and wild-born brown trout and rainbow trout can be found in most stretches of the river throughout the year. Early management and conservation efforts of the trout fishery of the Flat Brook started in 1893 with the establishment of the Flatbrook Valley Club, bringing with it a colorful history, full of local lore. More recently, in a push to enhance trout conservation and sustainability, the state changed the regulations in 2014 on the 4.5 mile stretch of Big Flatbrook and Flat Brook. The stretch between the Route 206 Bridge south to the Roy Tract Bridge went from “Fly Fishing Only” to a

Live or preserved baits and other scented products are prohibited. This has led to not just more and larger stocked rainbow trout available to anglers, but to a resurgence of the numbers of brook and brown trout being caught. sussexcountychamber.org 23

RAISE FUNDS FOR GOOD CAUSES Dragon Boat festival paddles into Lake Mohawk and German Christmas Market draws record crowds.

DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL Chilly weather and occasional sprinkles of rain did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of participants and spectators at the Sparta Education Foundation’s second annual Dragon Boat Festival on Lake Mohawk. With 52 teams competing in separate heats throughout the day on Sunday, May 15, 2015 some in brightly-colored and themed costumes, this high-energy event was just as much fun for spectators as it was for the paddlers. The day’s boating theme was reflected in many of the Dragon Boat team names which included Star Oars, Blazing Paddles, Strokes of Genius and Just Row With It. Dragon Boat Races were held in 46-foot long boats, with teams competed in 250 meter heats. Each

team was comprised of 20 paddlers and one drummer. A steersman was provided by Dynamic Dragon Boat Racing. “Once again we were so happy to organize this event for the entire Sparta community to enjoy,” said Dorothy LaBeau, President of the Sparta Education Foundation. “We are so grateful to our sponsors, participants, vendors, the many volunteers who lent a hand, the Lake Mohawk Country Club for providing us with such a fantastic venue, and the country club staff members who have been so helpful in the planning the Dragon Boat Festival with our event co-chairs Doug Layman and Nancy Purnell. SKYLANDS STADIUM Frozen in Ice makes successful debut

F

rozen in Ice was the first-ever ice sculpture extravaganza held at the Skylands Stadium Event Center. The indoor/outdoor event featured more than 100 tons of ice transformed into breathtaking displays. It ran February 5 – 28, 2016. The buzz for this cool ice spectacular in Sussex County began at the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan, at the New York Times Travel in early January 2016. The Sussex County Chamber of Commerce was there promoting the region’s attractions, marketed under the Sussex Skylands brand, and Frozen in Ice got immediate attention from show goers who strongly connected with its “winter wonderland” theme. Once opened, the show garnered lots of attention from the press too. FOX 5 Morning crew, PIX11 and The Today Show all stopped by to see what everyone was talking about.

“It’s one hundred tons of cool family fun,” enthused PIX11’s Lisa Mateo onair after a visit to the stadium with her children, adding, “bundle the kids up and head over to Augusta, NJ.” Anna Gilligan of Fox 5 agreed, calling it a “beautiful ice event.” A thrill for kids of course, the show was equally breath taking for adults, who, beyond experiencing the initial awe of an indoor world constructed of ice, couldn’t help but marvel at the exquisite details captured in the frozen water. A life-like ice sculpture of a full size water skier skimming over a boat’s wake inserted a delightful summery presence into an atmosphere dominated by wintery things. As to be expected, it was cold inside the event center! To prevent the ice sculptures from melting, the room had to be kept at or near freezing temperature, a bit of a challenge considering the spring-

like weather Sussex County experienced in February. “If you’ve got kids in the family and they’re looking for winter and they don’t find much winter by your home, when you come here, we’ve got winter,” said Nick Savva, Director of Events at the stadium. Attendees were encouraged to dress warmly for optimal enjoyment of the event, with ski pants highly recommended (but not required) for the glide down the huge 50-foot ice slide. Other frozen attractions included a giant ice throne, a life-sized ice cabin complete with an ice bed and ice dining table/ chairs, amazing ice sculptures of a horsedrawn carriage, working lighthouse, a gold mine maze, a snowman, snow princess, and Herbie the Miner, the mascot for the stadium’s baseball team, to name a few. There was also an ice bar and ice lounge complete with cocktails and wine tasting for adults. sussexcountychamber.org 29

NEWTON MEDICAL CENTER OPENS FACILITY FOR WOMEN County’s only comprehensive breast center

T

he first thing most women notice when entering The Center for Breast Health at Newton Medical Center is how un-clinical if feels. There’s no harsh lighting or uncomfortable chairs. Instead, the surroundings are warm, comfortable and spa-like. The Center for Breast Health, the only comprehensive breast center located in Sussex County, addresses women’s breast health needs, including state-ofthe-art technology, resources, education, support and follow up care, all in a tranquil, calming atmosphere. This is especially important to women undergoing what can typically be anxiety-producing procedures. The highlight of these services is digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT). Sometimes referred to as a three-dimen-

sional mammogram, DBT is a diagnostic tool that can detect small breast tumors, while decreasing false positives and the need for patient recalls. The center also offers 2-D mammography, breast ultrasounds, bone density scans and breast biopsy procedures. It includes a private waiting room area where women can relax with herbal teas and infused waters in a calm, patient-centered environment. A certified breast imaging navigator is on staff to assist with patient education and follow-up care. According to the 2013 Community Health Alliance of Northwestern-Central NJ, 25 percent of women in Sussex County aged 40 and older had not had a mammogram in the past two years. The age-adjusted death rate for breast cancer

in Sussex County is about 24 deaths per 100,000 women, according to the National Cancer Institute. This less than optimal survival rate is higher than the goal of HealthyPeople2020, a federal initiative to improve the lives of all Americans – and could be a by-product of late stage diagnosis. In addition to the behavioral, genetic, environmental factors, late stage diagnosis of breast cancer is driven by lack of early detection. This is largely due to limited access to care, including the availability of screening facilities, among other factors. The opening of the Center for Breast Health means that women in the community will no longer need to travel outside the area to receive these services. “We are honored to be able to be able to provide the highest level of mammog-

DBT is a breast imaging technique that uses computer algorithms and digital images to create a three-dimensional image of the breast. Conventional digital mammography is only two-dimensional. 3-D imaging may allow greater detection of breast lesions, especially in dense breasts where lesions can hide in the background of normal dense tissue. Ultimately, breast detection is improved. In addition, because of the added detail, 3-D imaging may reduce the need to call back a patient when an area of the breast may be in question due to tissue overlap, possibly obscuring an abnormality.Keep in mind, there is no significant impact to the patient from 3-D imaging. The time to take a tomographic image is similar to a conventional digital one. There is a minimally increased radiation dose which is still within the accepted guidelines of the FDA and American College of Radiology (ACR).

raphy and breast care services to the women of our region,” said Hector Cordero, MD, co-director of the new center. ‘With the ability to detect breast cancer at earlier stages, the services of the new center will give us a great advantage in the fight against breast cancer in our communities.” The opening of the Center for Breast Health in late 2015 was the centerpiece of “’15 for Women - Year of Women’s Health,” Annual Fund Campaign, which highlighted women’s role as the navigators of their families’ health care and the need for women to care for their own health and wellness. The campaign also sought to raise essential funds that would help Newton Medical Center remain on the forefront of medical and technological advances, enhance its programs, services and facilities and most importantly, support its mission to deliver high-quality, safe, affordable patient care within a healing culture. “The Center for Breast Health embodies the efforts we have made to advance the services at the hospital to deliver the highest level of care for our communities,” said Joe DiPaolo, president of Newton Medical Center and vice president of Atlantic Health System. “The support for the center and the year-long women’s health campaign also shows the long tradition of community support for the hospital is stronger than ever.” Plans for the center were unveiled in late 2014, at the launch of the campaign. At the time, the Newton Medical Center Foundation provided a $500,000 gift – roughly half the cost of the center - to the medical center that allowed the project to begin immediately. The remaining cost has been raised throughout the campaign through the hospital’s events as well as individual donations. The 2,500 square foot center was built in reconfigured space in the hospital’s radiology department.

PEOPLE AND NATURE TOGETHER It’s the Sussex County motto and an apt description of Mountain Creek resort in Vernon

M

ountain Creek (nee Great Gorge Ski Area) celebrated its 50th anniversary this past year. Five decades have seen the resort grow from Jack Kurlander and his family’s passion for skiing at Great Gorge beginning in 1965, through the early years of industry snowmaking, to expansion as skiing became more popular across the nation during the heady 1970’s.

In recent years, almost every ski area has summer attractions ranging from adventure ropes courses to biking to zip lines. As early as 1976 the resort opened Vernon Valley Fun Farm with softball, picnics, roller skating, and tennis.

industry! By the late 1990’s the resort converted most of Action Park to real estate and the last decade has seen a large investment in the stunning new ski lodge, snowtubing center, one of the best bike parks in the country, and new attractions in the Mountain Creek Waterpark. Always ahead of its time in innovation, the resort, under new ownership, looks to interpret its origins and a focus on sharing the great outdoors and creating great experiences for audiences large and small, especially multiple generations where families can share common interests and pursue individual passions. Skiing will always be the heart of Mountain Creek, where well over 1 million people have learned to ski or snowboard over the years. In 2011 the resort founded the Terrain Based Learning system that’s used in many ski areas across the country today. Working with elements of concierge-level service, gamification, and recognizing the importance of aspiration for beginners in any sport, this season the resort is 34 sussexcountychamber.org

building a special Beginner Learning Center for a smooth introduction, and next season will move all beginners to a custom teaching area at the top of the mountain via the SkyRide Gondola. Mountain Creek Waterpark is a unique wooded facility that puts the ‘park’ in waterpark, with a number of nostalgic natural attractions that bring to mind the backyard pleasures of rope swings, natural rapids and quarry jumps, with the safety of engineering and professional lifeguard oversight and mixed with exciting rides like the newer High Anxiety and plummeting Zero G rides. The most exciting news in the waterpark is the designing, currently in process, of a new children’s zone and play structures that will open up the amazing views of nature and cooling pools to kids as young as 3 years old. For pools of another type, the resort plans to bring a bit of Scandinavian tradition to the Norwegian-influenced valley with a plunge-pool spa. Imagine a quiet retreat where you move from wood-fired saunas to hot tubs and

steam-rooms and solariums to a chilling and invigorating plunge in a cold pool. The power of the hot and cold cycle is restorative and relaxing. The only thing that makes it better is an on-site massage or taking a few hours with a group to celebrate the experience together. Two of the greatest riches of the region are it’s long farming history, still vibrantly active today, and a deep pool of talented musicians. Put these together and you have a special place where a working vineyard and winery is also an indoor and outdoor stage space featuring national artists and local performers year-round in a nod to the agrarian nature of the region and the preservation of working farms. Mountain Creek is mining the past for the elements that will shape the future of this energetic and active community, in a concert of people and nature, that will leave all visitors with fond memories and plans to return again with families and friends. uying locally grown food is relatively convenient for Sussex County residents, most who live a short distance from a roadside stand or farmer’s market. Eating locally grown when dining out is getting easier too, as some restaurants build their brand on serving products grown, raised and produced by area farmers and artisians. The Mohawk House, inspired by three generations all from Sussex County, celebrates the bounty of the region and its heritage. Y.B. FARM

Ron Kahn and William Paterson (AKA “Young Boy Ron” and “Hydro Bill”) YB Farm is an eco-conscious, hydro-

ponic farm growing fruits, vegetables, super greens, and everything in between using organic growing principals and a greenhouse that is operated year-round. YB Farm utilizes soil and hydroponics to supply their quality produce to local stores, restaurants and individuals 12 months a year. Rather than use soil and sun, YB grows many of its products in nutrient rich water. Hydroponic Farming reduces environmental impact over traditional farming by 90%, utilizing only 1/10th of the land needed to produce the same amount of food. Hydroponics (a word in Latin that translates to “water working”) uses water in place of soil. That doesn’t mean that YB doesn’t enjoy a little bit of soil farming too. While hydroponics are its favorite and most sustainable form of farming, it is not a foil to soil farming but rather they work alongside one another to give all the farm’s products the chance to grow and flourish where they do the best.

SELECTIVE INSURANCE TURNS Runaway horse got founder into insurance biz

90!

I

n April 1926, Sussex County-based Selected Risks (now known as Selective Insurance Company of America) issued its very first insurance policy – auto coverage for a 1925 Hupmobile. This year, Selective is celebrating its 90th year in business and a history that is rich and illustrious. While much has changed over the decades, the company is still guided by the customer service ideals and principles established by its founder when he first opened Selective’s doors in Branchville, NJ. IT ALL STARTED WITH A HORSE In 1910, Daniel Luther Bertram (D.L.B.) Smith, then the proprietor of a successful, family-owned grocery store in Branchville, lent a horse and carriage to a friend who was a local insurance agent. Unfortunately, the horse got spooked and bolted into a ditch, damaging the carriage. Smith refused to take any payment for the damage so the friend gave Smith policy declarations for some of the farms and homes insured in the area. As his interest in insurance grew, Smith formed the D.L.B. Smith Agency. In the early 1920s, Smith sold his general store and dedicated himself full-time to his growing business as an insurance agent. As 38 sussexcountychamber.org

a merchant of good standing, he had a reputation for being a man of his word and interested in the welfare of his clients. This commitment to the people of his community led to Smith’s frustration with the service offered to his clients by some of the large, established insurance providers. So Smith took action – with an initial investment of $20,000, he and several colleagues formed Selected Risks Insurance Company. (Selected Risks became Selective Insurance Company of America in early 1986.) OVERCOMING THE GREAT DEPRESSION The Great Depression posed a lot of concerns for businesses nationwide, especially young companies just starting out. Selective survived by providing its customers (who were mostly farmers) with automobile policies at a rate $5 cheaper than what was being offered by larger companies. That decision won Selective the confidence and respect of farmers and organizations throughout the state. By 1932, an estimated 50% of all automobiles in Sussex County were covered by Selective. In 1933, Nation’s Commerce magazine singled out the company for its “consistent development and strong position” and

people across its footprint – approximately 800 are housed at the Branchville corporate office.

THE GROWING YEARS In 1937, Selective took the first step toward becoming a regional insurer by adding Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia to its operating territory. Today, Selective has a 22-state footprint, and has plans to expand into the Southwest in the latter part of 2017. As the company marked its 25th anniversary in 1951, it was growing too big for its cramped office on the main square in Branchville. After 19 months of construction, Selective moved into its current location on the hill off Wantage Avenue in 1953. The building could accommodate 335 employees, which fit the workforce comfortably… for a little while. In 1981, the company expanded again by building a three-story addition for its computer technology and growing staff, and in 1991, an additional expansion was completed. Last year, Selective received a beautification award from the Sussex County Chamber of Commerce in recognition of a newly constructed outdoor patio called ‘The Courtyard,’ which enhances the economic well-being and quality of life in Sussex County. Today, Selective employs more than 2,200

GIVING BACK As a corporate member of society, Selective is committed to giving back to the communities where we live and work. This focus started with founder D.L.B. Smith, who organized a horse show on Selective’s grounds to benefit the Tuberculosis League. Today, that little horse show is known as the New Jersey State Fair. Through the Selective Insurance Group Foundation, a philanthropic affiliate of Selective, the company supports organizations that provide health and human services, promote civic responsibility and support home, auto and business safety. Local grant recipients include the Karen Ann Quinlan Foundation, Newton Medical Center Foundation, the United Way of Sussex County, the New Jersey Highland Coalition, the Nature Conservancy and Sparta Glen restoration efforts. Selective is proud to call Branchville home. The carriage that broke that fateful day in 1910, which ultimately led to Smith’s decision to open an insurance company, has been restored and is on display at the company’s corporate headquarters. It serves as a reminder of Selective’s legacy – a company built on trust, integrity and service excellence, values that hold strong to this day.
