Have you noticed the improvements?

Above: SRM Students Jake Ashton & Rocky Morris enjoy new benches outside of the SHSRM Office Suite.

The School of Hospitality, Sport & Recreation Management (SHSRM) is constantly striving to improve the student experience. One area worth highlighting includes the recent addition of student seating in the hallway outside of the SHSRM Office Suite. Previously, students were forced to sit on the floor and the new benches provide a more comfortable waiting area for them between classes. In addition, Above: New television outside you may have noticed a new 42’ flat screen televiof SHSRM Office Suite sion immediately outside of the SHSRM Office Suite. Students should consult the television for the latest news and announcements, including information such as upcoming guest speakers, special events, course-specific info, undergraduate and graduate deadlines along with study abroad information. SHSRM clubs are also welcome to advertise upcoming events, but must consult their SHSRM faculty liaison for assistance. The SHSRM faculty would also like to thank the donors listed on the plaques hanging outside of the SHSRM Conference Room. Left : Donor plaques outside of SHSRM Conference Room

The SHSRM faculty & staff would like to congratulate all of our students graduating this year!

Outstanding HTM Senior This year the award for outstanding senior in Hospitality and Tourism Management went to Emilee Haverkamp! Below we have provided a letter reflecting on her education experience at James Madison University. A different senior year educational experience… At the end of the of the Fall semester, I reflected on my educational experiences at JMU and realized there was a major creative aspect that I had not had the opportunity to pursue in my time here. As I came into my final semester at JMU, I was looking to further explore some of my marketing and communications interests in a way that could also be integrated into helping to build the creative media foundations of the new school of Hospitality, Sport & Recreation Management. Faculty member Reg FoucarSzocki supported my ideas and through collaboration with culinary faculty Tassie Pippert and interim director Michael O'Fallon, the skeletal components of my independent study were developed. Over the next four months I would complete three major projects that would bring an exciting modern representation of the school to the public eye, and I could not have been more thrilled to embark on this work-learning experience under the direction of my faculty advisors. The three major projects of the marketing platform that I focused on through the semester were: 1. establishing a sustainable social media presence; 2. developing promotional materials and media for prospective future students and their families; 3. utilizing graphic design programs to create an online magazine documenting the Spring 2012 semester in the Hospitality program. The goals of these projects were to promote and market the unique Hospitality Management program at JMU throughout the educational community, share the many successes of the students and faculty with friends, alumni, and supporters of the program, and connect all past, present, and future participating members of the program across both social and professional networks. Each project grew into so much more than I ever imagined and I feel honored to have had the opportunity to leave my 'Mark on Madison' in such a personal and dynamic way. Emilee Haverkamp JMU BA ‘12

SINC Conference 2012 More than twenty students from the SRM program attended the Sport Industry Networking Conference in Washington, DC from February 10-11. The conference is hosted by the Sport Management program at George Washington University in Washington, DC. Keynote speakers at the conference included Phil de Picciotto (President of Octagon), Lisa Baird (Chief Marketing Officer, USOC), Kevin Plan (CEO & Founder, Under Armour), and Rick Horrow (Bloomberg News). Breakout sessions at the conference included topics such as sport marketing, sport contracts & negotiations, events and facility management, social media, sport for social good, sport media and communication and collegiate athletics. Students had the opportunity to speak with industry professionals during the Lunch Networking Roundtables and a number of our students had job or internship interviews. Students also enjoyed meeting students from other sport management programs, a social time during evening receptions, and less formal times of interaction. One of the highlights of the conference was meeting ESPN Anchor and JMU alumnus Lindsay Czarniak. Students attending the conference included: Ben Baker, Brian Barlow, Lindsay Brauch, Kirsty Clark, Robert Clinage, Matt Curtis, James Hemphill, Ayrton Glasper, Erika Grimm, Brad Harner, Kelsey Hays, Ryan Hourigan, Dru Henderson, Sylvia Lee, Kelsey Melland, Alexandra Noel, Sean Petrizzi, Above: Brian Barlow & Ben Baker enjoy Steve Plante, Alyssa Truesdale some coffee en route to the SINC Conference. and Jordan Underwood. Dr. Shonk has attended the conference for the last five years and recommends that students consider attending the SINC Conference early in their career at JMU. In the past, many students waited until they were looking for internships and jobs, but it is easier to network early so that you are not desperately seeking employment as a senior. There are numerous sport management conferences which are excellent, but the SINC Conference is one of the most affordable and convenient for JMU students. Special thanks to Ben Baker from SLAM for promoting and organizing the trip for SRM students. Above: SRM students attending the SINC Conference pose for a photo with ESPN anchor and JMU alumnus Lindsay Czarniak (SMAD, ‘00).

Le Gourmet Le Gourmet is the single largest fundraiser in support of the JMU Hospitality and Tourism Management Program. The evening has always provided a lively way to support this distinguished program while experiencing the very best the hospitality industry has to offer. The event is held at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to welcome students, faculty, alumni, and friends. This year will mark the 10th successful Le Gourmet event, and the money raised from it is vital for the faculty and students of the program. The proceeds raised from Le Gourmet are used in a variety of ways. For instance, this past year we were able to: • Provide an all expense paid experience for four of our students to attend the New York Hotel show • Recruit 2 new faculty members into our program • Present our research at our disciplines national conference, The Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (CHRIE) • Attend the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality conference with 7 students • Provide two scholarships to our students • Send 5 students to the national Professional Convention Management Association conference • Send 8 students to the Club Managers Association of America Annual World Conference • Plus much more

KABL Opening Day Ceremonies

SARA’S CORNER

Twelve SRM students spent a beautiful Saturday morning and afternoon on April 14 volunteering their time to enhance youth sports in the valley. Students Allie Noel, Brian Barlow, Brittney Jacks, Chris Beaver, Dan Wright, Erika Yancey, Kirsty Clark, Maura Gunning, Mike Civiello, Nicole Crivellaro, Ryan Dunn and Steven Plante joined more than 150 children along with their coaches, parents, family members and friends in celebrating Opening Day for the Keezletown Area Baseball League (KABL). The KABL is dedicated to providing recreational and competitive baseball to the youth of Harrisonburg, Keezletown, Penn Laird and the surrounding areas. Many of the SRM students participating in the Opening Day Ceremonies were SLAM members and they volunteered by assisting in the areas of concession operations, grilling and raffle ticket sales. This gave SLAM members an opportunity to give back to the community and parents and KABL Board members were very appreciative of the help. According to Michael Poma, KABL President, “the volunteer work of the JMU students is invaluable because it provides parents and families the opportunity to enjoy the Opening Day ceremonies with their children, whereas they would normally be working during this time.” Nicole Crivellaro is the Treasurer for SLAM and has been a KABL volunteer for the last three years. She was responsible for organizing SLAM volunteers for the Opening Day ceremonies. Nicole says she enjoys working with the KABL because “it provides an opportunity to work with youth baseball players and to organize SLAM members into a team that gives back to the community.” She also recommends KABL to other SRM students because “it is a fun experience outside of the JMU campus.” As the faculty sponsor for the KABL service opportunity, Dr. Shonk would like to thank Nicole and other SLAM members for their hard work and assistance during Opening Day.

In the Classroom Earth Day at Elkton Elementary School SRM students in KIN 333 hosted an "Earth Day" themed field event for Elkton Elementary School students on Friday April 20th from 11:30am-3pm at Stonewall Memorial Park in Elkton Virginia. The event was used as a tool to promote environmental sustainability awareness for the elementary school students. The students from the School of Hospitality, Sport and Recreation Management planned and organized the event to include relay races involving recycling or "Recycle Mania", scavenger hunt, live DJ with music, and much more. As a charitable event, the students also helped to organize a food drive with the elementary school to donate to Elkton Area United Services.

Educational Field Trip: HTM 330 Travels to Richmond & visits the HILTON Garden Inn & MARRIOTT downtown properties As students prepare for new careers in the hospitality and tourism industries, they need to learn all the ins and outs of a hotel, especially how the technology affects each department. The objective of this visit was to gain an understanding of the technologies used on a daily basis and to network. With this goal in mind, on April 20th, HTM 330 Hotel Operations and Hospitality Management students were hosted at the Hilton Garden Inn Richmond Downtown by GM Mr. John Cario ‘87, an alum of the James Madison University School of Hospitality Management Program. Subsequently, we all went into the Amethysta meeting room for refreshments and presentations from the Hotel Executive Committee reflecting on how technology impacts Sales & Marketing, HR, Rooms, Food & Beverage and Engineering. After being awarded this great business buffet lunch with the GM, we toured the hotel and then we walked across the street to the Richmond Marriott. During this time, Ms. Robinson (Richmond Marriott Senior Sales Manager) and her sales team surprised us with a nice JMU welcome slide on the lobby wall. We toured the hotel and meeting rooms and at 4:00pm the visit ended. We would like to thank Mr. John Cario and Ms. Leigh Robinson and their departmental staff to make these enlightening, informative and different in-loco visits.

In the Classroom Thank you HTM 400 Guest Speakers Students in the HTM400 Hospitality and Tourism Management Senior Seminar were very fortunate to have the following distinguished industry guest speakers in class during the Spring semester: • Ann Marie Coe & Sean Pugh, co-owners of the Joshua Wilton House • Gregg & Ashley Bellamy, owners of the Harrisonburg Chick-Fil-A • Luke O’Boyle, Chevy Chase Club Manager • Carol Simon, GM of the Stonewall Jackson Hotel • Allison Hannah, Sales Manager, Richmond CVB • Peter Faraone, VP & GM, The Homestead • Rick Casey, President & Entrepreneur, Capitol Representation, Inc. • Nicholas R. DiMeglio, GM, Ritz-Carlton • Brian O’Day, GM of Hotel Hershey & Lodge • Kelly Mitchell, Sales Development, Pepsi • Jason Sokoloff, JMU Libraries • Chris Campbell, JMU Academic & Career Advisor • Neil Marrin, Instructor, JMU SHSRM • Tassie Pippert, Instructor, JMU SHSRM • Michael O’Fallon, Director, JMU SHSRM This course was a discussion with hospitality industry leaders about their careers, their companies, the future of the industry, and the opportunities and challenges facing young managers. Students in the course presented a short bio and introduced each speaker. Many thanks to all of the guest speakers, professors and staff for supporting our HTM 400 seniors. Without you, this learning experience wouldn’t be possible. Go Dukes!

An Alumni Perspective At James Madison University, the Hospitality and Tourism program has changed and developed in a positive, exciting direction. As a HTM alumnus who graduated in 2008 from the program, I am proud to still be apart of its development. With a current role as Teaching Assistant for ARAMARK Dining Services, I am able to assist the Hospitality faculty in the HM Prowess 212 class.

Above: Ellen Callahan

As a senior in 2008, I gained my certification in ServSafe and remember memorizing the material, however not retaining it. I had not learned how to apply the material fully until my first career in the hospitality industry. The current HM Prowess 212 course has allowed students, at a sophomore level, to experience the food industry by gaining hands-on experience and classroom curriculum. By learning certifications such as ServSafe and TIPs, sophomores can better understand and apply food safety, sanitation and food preparation to better prepare themselves for internships and careers upon graduation.

Pictured above from left to right: Stacy Proctor (Aramark Dining Services Manager); Dr. Reg Foucar-Szocki (HM faculty member); Ellen Callahan; Michael O’Fallon (Director, SHSRM).

Not only is a hands-on experience important, a career portfolio is necessary in order to market yourself to future employers. With this course, students create and develop a career portfolio that includes certifications gained, a resume, cover letter, and pictures of the individual during working experiences. With the job market being aggressive it is important to JMU HM students to rise above the competition and stand out to employers. I am proud as a Teaching Assistant to help the students gain a competitive edge and look forward to helping in future semesters.

Theme Dinners The walls of the kitchen in Bridgeforth Stadium were ready to burst on Monday, April 16th as nearly 120 students and guests joined together for a celebration of the culmination of the semester in Hospitality. The kitchen, which serves as the culinary laboratory for the current HTM 470 and future HM 350 classes, was filled with the sights, smells and tastes of the upcoming theme dinners for Fall 2012. The HTM 470 teams creating the fall theme dinners were charged with serving their hors d’oeuvres and reception beverages to the students of HTM 471 and HM 212. Also present were the faculty and all members of each of the three presenting teams. The team responsible for the first theme dinner of the season, the Shenandoah Harvest Festival, presented delightful bourbon mushrooms and a delicious beverage enjoyed by the crowd. The Wizard of Oz team created a fantastic pork barbeque slider and an avocado and bacon stuffed tomato for the group to sample. Additionally, they wowed the crowd with their rendition of the Wicked Witch of the West green punch and their Glenda the Good Witch soft pink pour. Guests enjoyed Kentucky hot browns by the last group, Triple Crown, who amused the guests with their delicious punch. Each team was responsible for creating a three-dimensional model of their proposed dinner theme. A quick overview presentation allowed the guests to better understand how the themes were derived and how they will be executed. Guests had the opportunity to give feedback that will allow the teams to further perfect their events.

Faculty News & Notes Congratulations to Dr. Michael O’Fallon, Dr. Julie Wallace Carr and Dr. David Shonk This past year, the School of Hospitality, Sport and Recreation Management celebrated many accomplishments. One notable accomplishment was promoting and/or granting tenure to Dr. Michael O’Fallon, Dr. Julie Wallace Carr and Dr. David Shonk (pictured below from left to right). In October, 2011, these three faculty members submitted supporting material and documents highlighting their accomplishments at JMU. After months of review, in April 2012, the James Madison University's Board of Visitors promoted Dr. O’Fallon and Dr. Shonk to Associate Professor and granted each of them along with Dr. Wallace Carr tenure. This is a tremendous honor for faculty across the nation. Congratulations to Michael, David and Julie on this great accomplishment.
