transformatION New Year. New You.
ION JUST JACK
30
years ago I quit my corporate job, took off my tie for the last time and turned off my alarm clock. I started JMT Designs, the company that owns ION Arizona. We’ve been through three recessions, many wars, and a pandemic. It’s nothing short of a miracle that we’re still here. But we are, and we’re stronger than ever thanks to all of the talented employees, contractors, contributors and, most importantly, YOU! The one thing that keeps all business owners up at night are bad reviews. While we strive to please everybody, we can’t always. ION Arizona has tens of thousands of fans, followers and readers but we have one that comments every time we put a sexy, in shape man on the cover. We would never intentionally body shame anyone, but we also want to encourage and inspire people to be the best they can be — no matter what your body shape is. Fortunately, there are some amazing locally owned gyms that never get bad reviews. This issue focuses on ZacFit in Scottsdale. Owner Zac Wein promotes his gym as gay, fun and playful — just like he is. Check out the feature on page 28. Start the new year at a new gay gym with a new gay personal trainer. Also in this issue is an extended feature on the upcoming Desperado Film Festival, tons of Party Cams, upcoming concerts, theatre performances, and parties. Don’t miss a beat and take us along for the ride! Happy New Year, thank you for your support over the years and good luck being the best you can be! Jack Tesorero Business Survivor 6

Movies Will Never Let You Down The Desperado LGBTQ+ Film Festival returns. Movies are like magic tricks. They can make you laugh, they can make you cry. They’re an entertaining and an emotional art form. The secret is that they’re all an illusion. The Mattachine Family A queer story about the universality of love, family, and community. In this bright, clear-eyed dramedy about modern fatherhood, we come in at a critical moment in the life of Thomas (Nico Tortorella). The child he and his husband, Oscar (Juan Pablo di Pace), fostered has been reunited with his birth mother. A touching story about family, the bonds we form with friends and lovers and children, and the way those relationships define us, elude us, and perplex us. Anyone who values their chosen family and community or felt lost in love will appreciate this film. Find out more at TheMattachineFamily.com 7:30 p.m.

This Time When a closeted teen inherits her estranged father’s journal she discovers cryptic clues uncovering his secret life. They have exactly 29 days to find out. The two embark on a summer romance and plenty of song and dance. Things get tricky when the boys’ mothers enter the picture and put their sons’ love to the test. Add to that the pressure of trying to make it in the music biz, and you have a recipe for disaster. A teenage girl named Twinkie comes out to her parents and takes off on a cross country road trip to meet her mysterious online crush, BD, convincing her nerdy best friend, Egghead, to come along for the ride. The only problem? Egghead is in love with Twinkie, and BD might not be everything she seems to be online. (Surprise!) This light-hearted road movie tackles racial identity, teenage sexuality, and self discovery for a generation of youth seeking love and acceptance, but at the core it’s a story about friendship. 2 p.m.

Fittin’ in at by Deon Brown
I
n search of the sun, Zac Wein moved to Arizona from Wisconsin in 2015. He opened his own gym, ZacFit, seven years ago in Scottsdale. Zac, who identifies as pansexual, wanted to have a queer gym for queer people, knowing how intimidating traditional gyms and trainers can be for LGBTQ people searching to create a healthier lifestyle. That’s a tough project. “Nothing about my life is traditional, I’ve always been a square peg not fitting in a round hole. Coming from my own experience from not belonging anywhere, I wanted to create the exact opposite for others,” became Zac’s mission. “I haven’t always been fit. In 2010, self-conscious and scared of the gym I decided to make a change. With the guidance of a personal trainer, I lost 70 pounds in only nine months,” Zac remembers. “This life-changing event gave me a passion for helping others. Enthusiasm is what keeps me authentic. I’m really living my purpose by helping people. Zac believes. “The biggest transformations that mean the most to me aren’t just physical or visual, it’s things like overcoming depression, anxiety, finding fulfillment in other areas of life.” Zac believes. “I’m what many call a ‘go-go-go’ type of guy. But I’m doing the thing I love most with the awesome people. I’m so grateful for how uplifting and positive my ZacFitters are.” ZacFit client and bestie Lucas “LuLu LoveBttm” Drake enlisted at ZacFit over three years ago to improve himself after a difficult breakup. “ZacFit provides a judgment free, queer-friendly workout space and training program to not only work on your body physically, but help you conquer your insecurities mentally,” says LuLu. “He’s not only a kind and patient trainer, who makes fitness fun, but a loving human as well. He changed my life; I don’t know where I’d be without him.” ZacFit works at making fitness goals attainable. “We’re all becoming who we were meant to be,” is ZacFit’s philosophy. “I have the very best job training the very best humans. At ZacFit you don’t have to worry about being judged or feeling like you don’t fit in.” Zac and his staff make it happen for you at ZacFit. 28

ZacFit’s here to turn your “New Year, New Me” mantra from a wish into a roar with our Five Fitness Tips. 1. Flexibility is Queen: Remember, staying loose is essential to staying tight! Just a quick 2-minute daily stretch routine does wonders for your flexibility, not to mention keeping that pelvic floor mighty enough to grip like a star. 2. Work That Booty: Those hips and glutes aren’t just for show; they’re for go! Add a daily 5-minute glute routine to your fitness. It’s one of our ZacFit secrets to making sure every day is a “booty-full” day in the gayborhood.

Saltburn Eat the rich. Dorky Oliver Quick attends Oxford University, struggling to fit in with the upper-class. He befriends the dreamy Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi, Euphoria), who invites the misfit to spend summer at his family’s sprawling estate, Saltburn. Good Grief Marc (Dan Levy, Schitt’s Creek) was content living in the shadow of his larger-than-life husband, Oliver (Luke Evans). But when Oliver unexpectedly dies, Marc’s world shatters, sending him and his two best friends, Sophie and Thomas, on a soul-searching trip to Paris, revealing some hard truths they each needed to face.
Capote vs. The Swans Ryan Murphy brings us a new Feud. When Truman Capote hit a writer’s block he mined the intimate stories his besties – his “Swans,” – like Lee Radziwell and Babe Paley, told him and published them in La Côte Basque (1965). They were horrified and it ruined his reputation. Murphy is sure to bend the truth, like always. Directed by Gus Van Sant.

H
omeschooling doesn’t prepare you for this. From the comedic mind of Tina Fey (SNL, 30 Rock) comes a new twist on the modern classic, Mean Girls, based on the stage musical. So grab your Burn Book, because we’re here for the tea … New student Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) is welcomed into the top of the social food chain by the elite group of popular girls called “The Plastics,” ruled by the conniving queen bee Regina George (Reneé Rapp) and her minions Gretchen (Bebe Wood) and Karen (Avantika). However, when Cady makes the major misstep of falling for Regina’s exboyfriend Aaron Samuels (Christopher Briney), she finds herself prey in Regina’s crosshairs. As Cady sets to take down the group’s apex predator with the help of her outcast friends Janis (Auli’i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey), she must learn how to stay true to herself while navigating the most cutthroat jungle of all: high school. Remember, Plastic is Forever! And remember … on Wednesdays we wear pink.
