The John Michael Kohler Arts Center is an innovative cultural oasis known as a visionary leader in the international art world and a lively community gathering place. Exhibitions The many exhibitions presented each year feature the work of emerging and established contemporary artists, self-taught artists, and art-environment builders. Even the washrooms at the Arts Center are works of art! ABC’s Good Morning America listed them among “America’s Best Bathrooms.”

Making and Learning All ages can enjoy a multitude of hands-on activities in The ARTery, a free, drop-in art studio. For more in-depth explorations, the Arts Center offers ongoing classes and special workshops with visiting artists. Café and Gift Shops The ARTcafe features delectable, wholesome fare. Two ARTspace gift shops, at the Arts Center and at The Shops at Woodlake Kohler, carry artist-made gifts, creative toys, art books, and much more.

Performing Arts Extraordinary dancers, musicians, and actors from across the region and around the world are showcased throughout the year. From Festive Fridays to the Footlights series to Summer Theatre, the Arts Center’s performing arts schedule is both entertaining and adventurous.

EARLY CHILDHOOD ENRICHMENT CLASSES TINY TOT ART TIME—Birth to age 2 (with an adult) Fridays, January 31 and February 7 10:00–11:00 a.m. Make memories with your little one in this introductory class as you guide tiny hands and feet to explore clay, paint, and more. We will visit the galleries for inspiration. Instructor: Diana Baumann Tuition (per pair): $24 ($20 member)

STUDIO ART TIME—Age 3–6 (with an adult) Class I: Fridays, January 10–24 Class II: Fridays, March 7–21 1:00–2:00 p.m. Foster creativity in your young child through exploration of art materials and techniques inspired by observations in the galleries. This unique learning environment furthers development in alignment with the Wisconsin Early Model Learning Standards. YOUTH WORKSHOPS AND CLASSES CREATIVE COOKING—Age 8–14 Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, March 24, 26, and 28 11:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m. Beloved chef Marilyn Montemayor has planned delicious spring menus to create and eat in our kitchen. SATURDAY DISCOVERY STUDIOS FOR YOUTH EXPLORATION STUDIO: 2-D—Age 7–11 Saturdays, March 8 and 15 1:30–3:30 p.m. Transform your imagination into reality! Students will draw, paint, print, and design their own projects using pen, pencil, charcoal, ink, and paint. Instructor: Andrea Andersen Tuition: $60 ($55 member)

CREATIVE MOVEMENT WORKSHOP—Age 7–12 Saturday, May 31 12:30–4:00 p.m. Stretch those muscles, and get ready to move in this workshop that will guide students to express themselves through locomotion. Instructor: Libby Schmitz Tuition $50 ($45 member)

CLAY CREATIONS—Age 7–12 Saturdays, March 8–22 1:30–3:30 p.m. Explore the exhibitions in a different way—through clay! Clay is a wonderful, tactile medium that many have never experienced before. It is both challenging and fun. Instructor: Diana Baumann Tuition: $110 ($100 member)

BEHIND-THE-SCENES: FILM PRODUCTION—Age 10–16 Saturdays, March 29–April 19 1:00–4:00 p.m. In this four-week class, students will explore the basics of filmmaking: creative writing, editing, and framing shots while collaborating to make a cool video! NORWAY Saturday, November 23 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. Visit Norway without leaving Sheboygan! Learn about the culture and traditions of the land of northern lights at this festival featuring performances, art-making activities, and authentic ethnic cuisine.

THAILAND Saturday, January 18 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. Did you know that Thailand is known as the Land of Smiles? We’re sure our Family Festival: Thailand will make you smile.

FAMILY WORKSHOP EGGSTRAVAGANZA All ages (children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult) Saturday, April 12, 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. Bring your eggs and turn them into original works of art in this lively studio session. We provide all the decorating materials and instruction needed to make it easy! This special workshop, full of fun activities, is for adults and children age five and older. You may drop in anytime during the scheduled session. Bring 18 eggs (12–14 hard boiled and 4–6 blown). Tuition: $10 ($8 member)

EGYPT Saturday, April 26 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. Egypt is home to one of the world’s oldest civilizations. Come experience some of the traditions that comprise its culture today. Tickets: $8 ($6 member/full-time student through age 21) There is a nominal extra charge for food.


ADULT CLASSES for participants age 14 and older CHARCOAL AND PENCIL DRAWING FOR BEGINNERS Tuesdays, January 7–21 6:00–8:00 p.m. If you are picking it up for the first time or refreshing old skills, this drawing class is for you! Instructor: Agata Augustine Tuition: $55 ($45 member) BEGINNING LEATHERWORKING Thursdays, February 27, March 6 and 13 6:00–8:00 p.m. Want to learn to craft functional objects in leather? In this class, students will learn how to design, cut, stamp, dye, antique, sew, and edge finish vegetable-tanned cowhide in the Sheridan style. Demonstrations of both traditional and contemporary techniques will be followed by hands-on experimentation with the material. Each student will complete a journal cover and a pouch wallet. No experience necessary. Instructor: Kenneth Sager Tuition: $80 ($70 member)

LEATHERWORKING one-day workshop Saturday, March 1 10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. In this three-hour intensive workshop, students will learn the basics of working with vegetable-tanned cowhide in the Sheridan style. Designing, cutting, stamping, dyeing, and edge finishing will be demonstrated and discussed. Every student will complete one wrist cuff. No experience necessary. Instructor: Kenneth Sager Tuition: $45 ($38 member) DRAWING TO PAINT Tuesdays, May 13–June 17 6:00–8:00 p.m. Turn your sketches into vibrant paintings in this six-week course. Supplies are included. JEWELRY CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS with Susan Richter-O’Connell KEUM-BOO LOCKET Tuesdays, January 28–February 25 6:00–8:00 p.m. This class is for the more advanced student who is comfortable building pieces with multiple solderings. We build a locket with a pivoting tube rivet hinge and finish the front with a flourish using texture and the ancient keum-boo technique of fusing high-carat gold to fine silver. Stone setting is optional. Tuition (silver is additional): $95 ($80 member)

CHAIN MAKING: ONE-DAY WORKSHOP Sunday March 9 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. This class is open to all levels. Participants will learn to wrap wire, cut coils, and solder jump rings to assemble a variety of chains— from simple designs for the beginner to more elaborate designs for the experienced. Students will complete one unique necklace or multiple sample pieces. Tuition (silver is additional): $60 ($50 member)

KEUM-BOO: ONE-DAY WORKSHOP Sunday, February 9 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Learn the ancient technique of keum-boo, the fusing of gold to silver, and create a simple pendant and earrings. Using precut disks and rectangles, participants will learn techniques to apply texture to silver and fuse high-carat gold to the silver to create a unique piece of wearable art that combines both metals. Tuition (silver is additional): $60 ($50 member)

BEGINNING METALSMITHING Tuesdays, April 1–May 6 6:00–8:00 p.m. In this six-week course, beginning students will explore the fundamentals of metalsmithing, including sawing, filing, forging, texturing, and soldering. Each student will design and fabricate several jewelry projects. Practice metals are included in tuition. Experienced metalsmithers are welcome. Tuition (silver is additional): $145 ($120 member)

SPINNING RING Tuesdays, March 4 and 11 6:00–8:00 p.m. This class is open to all levels. Students will learn to form a wide, concave ring shank over which they will design another textured ring that will sit inside and spin. Tuition (silver is additional): $60 ($50 member)

COOKING CLASSES with Marilyn Montemayor JAPANESE CUISINE Tuesdays, January 28 and February 4 6:00–8:00 p.m. Learn how to prepare sushi rice and roll it into a delicious meal along with other Japanese dishes. Class price includes a sushi rolling mat for you to take home. Tuition: $60 ($51 member) ROMANTIC RECIPES Tuesday, February 11 6:00–8:00 p.m. Whether it is a first date or you have been together for 50 years, this one-night-only cooking class is a great way to spend time together. Tuition: $30 ($25 member)

ONE-PAN COOKING Tuesdays, March 4 and 18 6:00–8:00 p.m. Less mess, less stress! This class is all about simply delicious meals with simple cleanup. Tuition: $60 ($51 member) INDIAN COOKING Thursdays, April 3 and 10 6:00–8:00 p.m. Make delicious naan and curry. Let your taste buds take a vacation, even if the rest of you can not! CERAMICS CLASSES CERAMICS STUDIO Thursdays, February 4–March 11 6:00–8:00 p.m. Whether you are just starting or you are continuing a journey with clay, this open studio presents an opportunity to learn and experiment while working on your own projects. Instructor: Pat Robison Tuition: $150 ($130 member) VESSEL PENDANTS WITH METAL CLAY Thursdays, March 13–27 6:00–8:00 p.m. Using cork clay and precious-metal clay, create a one-of-a-kind pendant. Instructor: Laura Rehorst Tuition: $150 ($130 member)

CERAMICS: SLIP CASTING Thursdays, April 3–24 6:00–8:00 p.m. Learn to make multiple ceramic pieces using slip casting. Tuition: $180 ($153 member) AN EXPLORATION IN PORCELAIN with SANDRA BYERS Saturday and Sunday, April 26–27 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Two-time Arts/Industry resident and respected artist Sandra Byers (WI) returns to the Arts Center for an exploration of porcelain. Participants will use pinching, hand-building, and carving techniques to create sculptural forms out of translucent, bright white porcelain from Australia. Tuition: $150 ($130 member) 9

Punch Cards offer the flexibility to attend as many sessions as you pay for: one punch equals one, one-hour dance session per person. A 12-punch winter/spring card includes one free admission to the Spring Ballroom Dance Event. 6-punch card: $52 ($45 member) 12-punch card: $104 ($90 member) SPRING BALLROOM DANCE EVENT Sunday, April 13, 1:00–4:00 p.m. Greet spring with an enchanting afternoon of elegance on the dance floor. Meet new people, watch dance demonstrations and exhibitions, and mix it up with other dancers. There will be an introductory lesson prior to the event at noon ($5 per person). Admission: $10 ($8 member/full-time student through age 21) PRIVATE BALLROOM DANCE LESSONS Do you have a wedding, anniversary, or other celebration coming up? THE ARTERY AFTER HOURS: CASTING Adults age 21 and older Thursday, March 6, 6:00–8:00 p.m. Hang out in The ARTery, enjoy a drink, and become a mold maker! Learn the steps to creating your own mold and how to cast from it. Supplies and instruction will be included. Cash bar including wine and beer on site. Admission: $15 ($12 Member)

The SPARK! program is a monthly program for people with early- to mid-stage memory loss and a friend, family member, or caregiver. Monday, December 9, 2013, 10:00–11:30 a.m. Dance and socialize at the SPARK! holiday party. Dance instructor Susan Alby will be our special guest. Wednesday, January 8, 10:00–11:30 a.m. Bring your appetite! We will be cooking delicious winter dishes with Marilyn Montemayor. Wednesday, February 19, 9:30–11:30 a.m. Mingling Japanese tradition and American innovation, TaikoProject All-Stars transform the ancient art of drumming. Wednesday, March 12, 9:30–11:30 a.m. Attend the Lucky Plush Productions’ The Better Half, based on the 1944 noir film classic Gaslight. Wednesday, April 9, 10:00–11:30 a.m. Experience Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara’s artistry in song. Wednesday, May 14, 10:00–11:30 a.m. Tour the Arts/Industry exhibition and see how casting is done. Sunday, June 22, 10:00–11:30 a.m. Explore the Arts Center’s beautiful gardens and show off your green thumb by doing some container gardening of your own.
