from the

President

Message Acting

As a proud alumna and acting president of Jackson State University, it is an honor to present the 2022 Annual Report, which includes significant milestones completed during the first year of our JSU Elevate Strategic Plan.

Over the last year, the Division of Academic Affairs worked diligently to evaluate our existing academic offerings to identify and develop new programs that will prepare students for the future needs of Corporate America and beyond. As a result, we launched a new supply chain management degree in the College of Business. The College of Health Sciences established the Bachelor of Science in Public Health and two new online graduate certificate programs in biostatistics (available fall 2023) and epidemiology (available Spring

2023). Additionally, JSU was recognized as one of the leading baccalaureate institutions for Black students who later earn a research doctorate in a recent National Science Foundation report.

The university completed key reaccreditation steps for various programs around campus. The College of Education and Human Development had a successful virtual visit with the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation. Also, the College of Business had a successful accreditation visit with The Network of International Business Schools.

JSU sponsors continue to lift up our students through the creation of centers of excellence to assist in their matriculation and development as leaders. We established the Bob Owens Pre-Law Center to help students prepare for the LSAT exam and immerse them in the legal profession. The Women’s Business Center is an on-campus resource to provide business services to women-owned businesses seeking federal contract dollars. Additionally, U.S. Representative Bennie Thompson awarded JSU $3 million to establish the Center for Living, Learning and Cultural Engagement

I’d also like to highlight the progress made to improve the campus infrastructure through several safety and beautification projects. The demolition of Charles F. Moore Building to address extensive structural issues created an opportunity to build a new green space where the campus community can gather for outdoor functions or leisure. The Lynch Street Project will enhance the campus gateway through widened pedestrian pathways and enhanced lighting. The Dining Hall Expansion Project will include 30,000 additional square feet to build and state-of-the-art kitchen and prep/storage areas. Most importantly, we look forward to expanding our inventory for on-campus housing to accommodate more students in a conducive live-workplay atmosphere.

I am excited about this strategic plan progress which further strengthens the JSU experience for our students and the JSU external community.

Elayne H. Anthony

CSET Atrium Names After

Brigadier General Robert Crear

Jackson State University unveiled the Brigadier General Robert Crear atrium in the College of Science, Engineering and Technology, which is named after the 1975 alumnus in recognition of his impressive career accomplishments. The atrium dedication was made possible through a generous $1 million major gift contribution from John Nau, president and CEO of Silver Eagle Distributors, L.P., a longtime friend and colleague of Crear. The funds will be used for scholarship for students majoring in in science, technology, engineering, and math, including students enrolled in JSU’s ROTC program.

A native of Vicksburg, Crear spent his 33-year military career on active duty worldwide. He has commanded and led soldiers and civilians at every level while serving in high-level leadership positions with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Crear is chairman of Rye Development, the leading developer of new hydroelectric power on existing dams in the United States. He is also president and CEO of the Crear Group LLC, a governmental relations and business development consulting firm in his hometown.

Jackson State University alumna Carcia Carson solidified her place in history by becoming the first Black woman to receive her Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from Vanderbilt University. With the completion of her advanced degree, Carson intends to devote her professional research to developing translational research in cancer vaccines and personalized immunotherapy. A native of Terry, Carson obtained her B.S. in physics in 2014 from JSU. Shortly after, she transitioned to Fisk University to participate in their Fisk-Vanderbilt Master’s-to-PhD Bridge Program, where she also obtained her master’s degree in physics.

Having secured national fellowships and published several academic publications while attending Fisk and Vanderbilt, Carson credits JSU for providing her with the ability to network effectively with key stakeholders in her field. More specifically, she extended deep gratitude toward former JSU faculty member Quentin Williams, Ph.D., for investing in her ability and training her work ethic, which further inspired her to pursue the FiskVanderbilt program.
