+ East golfers fawn over fawn A baby fawn captured the attention of golfers at The River Club golf course April 19. The fawn rested all day beneath trees along a lake behind the golf club, before it disappeared around 4 p.m. Golfer Noel Pressler made sure to snap this cute picture with her phone. The fawn reappeared April 20, and wildlife rehabilitator Justin Matthews, of Justin Matthews Wildlife Rescue, took the young deer into his care. Based on the fawn’s condition, it has been abandoned by its mother, Matthews said. “She’s been separated (from her mother) for a while,” he said. “She’s skin and bones.” Once the fawn’s health improves sufficiently, Matthews said he would take it to a wildlife center in Venice for further care and rehabilitation.

+ LECOM, Bradenton celebrate physicians The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Bradenton community this week are joining to celebrate osteopathic physicians nationwide. April 15-21 is National Osteopathic Medicine Week. The event corresponds with the founding date of the American Osteopathic Association, April 19, 1897. As part of the local recognition, Bradenton Mayor Wayne Poston recently presented an official proclamation to LECOM Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Robert George and members of the school’s Student Government Association. The proclamation recognizes the contributions of local osteopathic physicians and their commitment to improving the health of the community.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Braden River Utilities, the entity that provides irrigation water to Lakewood Ranch, is moving forward with infrastructure improvements that will link its water supply to reclaimed water from the city of Sarasota. But, those improvements won’t come cheap. The improvements, as well as overall increases in operating costs, will result in a 50% rate increase for non-potable water, which will go from 60 cents per 1,000 gallons to 90 cents per 1,000 gallons, starting Oct. 1. Monthly user fees also will be increasing from $663.80 to $683.71. The rates have not changed

Bayside to open third campus Bayside Community Church will open its East Sarasota site this September. MANATEE COUNTY — The East County’s largest church is getting ready to grow again. Bayside Community Church has announced it will launch an East Sarasota campus in September. “We’ve been working on this probably for over a year,” Associ-

ate Senior Pastor Alex Anderson. “Every time we get filled up, we try to find another way of emptying chairs so more people can come. We’d rather invest our money in people (rather than a bigger building), so we do other campuses.” Anderson said more than 500 families who currently attend ser-

Many employees, despite 13-hour days, are not being compensated accordingly because of the type of contracts under which they work, he said. “Everybody’s been asked to do more with less; that’s the sentence of the day,” Ross said. “Right now, we’ve been reorganizing the transportation department. We’re real efficient, and when you’re real efficient, there’s no room for inefficiency. If it’s not there, the job doesn’t get done. We look at budgets every single day. It’s a tool we use. We run it like a business.”

Substitutes for personal leave: $871,363. For substitute bus drivers. “We are three-quarters through the year, and we’ve only used about onethird the budgeted subs for personal leave,” Ross said. “That’s an indicator we are very short on staff. Right now, all of our subs are driving permanent routes.”

Training-related costs Professional and technical services: $61,152. For services that can, by their nature, only be performed by persons with specialized skills. Includes services of architects, engineers, consultants and others. Out-of-county travel: $1,668. Funding needed for out-of-county training that allows trainers to stay current on licenses. In-house training, Ross said, saves the district thousands of dollars per incident and also allows the district to set its own training schedule more easily. Class C meal reimbursement: $11,059. For rental equipment. “That’s kind of an old item we don’t need any longer,” Ross said.

For the purchase of 47 new school buses. “We removed 12- and 13-year-old buses that were less fuel efficient and had higher costs of repair,” Ross said. “They didn’t have seatbelts or air conditioning.” Capitalized software: $1,810. For a software package for parts of the buses, similar to a warranty.

Other Non-capitalized FF& E Facilities: $17,350. MANATEE COUNTY — As acting transportation director for the Manatee County Public School District, Don Ross maintains his department is running as leanly as possible. On any given school day, in fact, transportation department employees with CDL licenses can be found out driving school buses, because bus drivers are short in supply. “There is no fat in this office,” Ross said. “There are times when there are only three people left in the office, because (our employees are out d r i v i n g ) . The Manatee County School Board in February approved $200,000 in funding for 11 school bus drivers, a training officer and full-time transportation director to meet the department’s staffing needs. “I knew that we were trying to hire drivers and substitute drivers, but, for whatever reason, we were having trouble getting them,” School Board Chairman Robert Gause said. “Don (Ross) coming forward (with this request) was really the first we realized it was reaching a critical stage. You know you’re tight. Everybody’s focused on reduced spending. “You just don’t realize you have pushed them to the breaking point,” he said. “They’re there now. I didn’t realize how seriously understaffed he was at until he came forward.” In general, departmental budgets have been cut 5-10% annually for the last six years or so, Ross said. Contact Pam Eubanks at peubanks@yourobserver.com.

The Manatee County School District’s Transportation Department provides home-to-school transportation to 59 schools/centers and three charter schools. It also provides 1,855 extracurricular field trips to those customers, as well as 21 outside groups, throughout the year.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Supervisors on the Lakewood Ranch Community Development District 5 board are welcoming input from district residents and the Country Club/Edgewater Village Association’s Safety Committee about whether to allow Country Club of Lakewood Ranch members use of the gate at Players Drive and Lorraine Road. Lakewood Ranch Town Hall officials said Schroeder-Manatee Ranch is asking the board to allow all Country Club members, including those from the Country Club East development, access to the club via the gate at Lorraine Road and Players Drive. The item has been tabled until next month’s meeting, so feedback can be collected. “I personally need some more information as to what the CDD 5 (residents want),” CDD 5 Chairman Tom Bishop said. Country Club members already can access the club through the main entry at University Parkway and Legacy Boulevard and at the gate at The Masters Avenue and Lorraine Road. Residents of the Presidio and Riviera neighborhoods, in particular, are concerned about safety in their neighborhood and at the Players intersection with Lorraine. “There are some major safety issues,” resident David Schoenborn said. “We’re all concerned with the volume of traffic (at) Players and Lorraine.” CDD 5 supervisors noted the Players Drive entrance, unlike the other two entrances, is immediately adjacent to homes rather than the golf course. They also noted the distance from the Country Club East entrance to the Country Club, whether drivers take the Players or Masters Avenue entrance, is the same. IN OTHER NEWS: CDDs 2 and 5

• New street signage in both Districts 2 and 5 has been approved by Manatee County, allowing for the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office to begin additional patrols last week. The districts are paying for the service to curb speeding and other traffic violations in the community. • In CDD 2, supervisors approved a work assignment with KimleyHorn and Associates for storm drain investigation and repair work at a cost not to exceed about $14,800. “They will be helping us develop the bid process for repairs (and the work itself,” Operations Director Ryan Heise said. • In CDD 5, supervisors rejected a settlement offer from Gigliotti Contracting for about $50,000 in a storm drain litigation lawsuit. A trail date for the lawsuit has been set for April 2013.

All CDDs

• Supervisors granted approval to negotiate with top-ranked firms, as determined by the Request for Qualifications for Continuing Professional Services, and also approved agreements vendors selected through the same process at the boards’ March meetings.

The following information was gathered from incident and arrest reports obtained from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

APRIL 14 BUSTED!

7:25 p.m. — 7300 block of 52nd Place East. Petty grand theft: shoplifting. Two female suspects placed clothing into bags as they walked through the store. Both individuals then placed all of the items into the baby stroller and walked out of the front of the store, passing all points of sale and failing to pay for the items in the stroller. The total value of the stolen items is $298.21. The complainant, a lossprevention officer for the store, approached the females just outside of the store, but both ran when he identified himself as security. The unknown black female was obviously pregnant, so he didn’t chase her per company policy. He did chase the other female, but she was able to get into a vehicle with the unknown black female before he caught up with her. The females then left the area before the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived. During the time the complainant was chasing one of the suspects, she had dropped her handbag with her identification in it. The complainant advised he was positive it was the same female he was chasing. The females also left the stroller in the parking lot, as he was chasing them. All of the items left behind by the females have been placed into property and evidence for trial.

The truth ... and nothing but I’ll never forget the night I told my parents I wanted to become a journalist. My father’s face fell, awash with disappointment. He was a chemist, and I suppose assumed I would follow suit in some sort of science- or math-related career path. So, it’s quite ironic that since I was a toddler, my father hammered home the most important rule in the news industry: Tell MICHAEL the truth. ENG Like a broken record, he’d utter those words every time my brother and I had an argument or something breakable met an unexpected end on the floor. And under his powerful glare, I’d inevitably cave, sobbingly spilling my guts. In the wake of two months of questionable reporting of the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, it seems more journalists could use my father’s advice. This isn’t meant to influence your opinion as George Zimmerman’s trial begins. Rather, it is simply a reminder that, in this day of news-by-Twitter, it is more important than ever to seek the truth relentlessly.

Below is just a sampling of the inaccuracies published since that evening Feb. 26 — many of which were intended to influence you by shoehorning this tragedy into the confines of a white-on-black hate crime. 1. Photos of Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman. As national media grabbed hold of the story, the images accompanying the reports included a severalyears-old, baby-faced photo of Martin juxtaposed with a photo of Zimmerman in what looked like prison orange glaring at the camera. The photo of Zimmerman was strikingly different than the man who appeared in court last week. 2. The New York Times. On March 22, the New York Times identified George Zimmerman as a “white Hispanic.” Although Phil Corbett, the paper’s standards editor, defended the term, he also noted the New York Times later decided to identify Zimmerman simply as “Hispanic.” 3. Racial slur. Early in the investigation, CNN enhanced the audio of Zimmerman’s 911 call to determine whether he had uttered the racial slur “coon.” At that time, the CNN report concluded Zimmerman did use the slur. Then, on April 5, the network released an update, which featured another audio enhance-

ment, and determined Zimmerman said the word, “cold.” The special prosecutor’s affidavit on April 11 concluded the word in question was “punks.” But the damage already was done. 4. Evidence of injuries. On March 23, CBS News released security video of Zimmerman as he entered the Sanford police station on its website. The video ran under the headline, “Video shows Zimmerman without obvious injuries,” which fueled the debate regarding Zimmerman’s self-defense claims. Then on April 20, ABC’s Good Morning America published a new photo taken by police just minutes after he shot Martin that showed blood dripping from two cuts on the back of Zimmerman’s head. 5. Spike Lee. Also on March 23, director Spike Lee published what he thought was George Zimmerman’s home address on his Twitter account. Unfortunately, the address was that of David and Elaine McClain, an elderly couple who was forced to move into a hotel. Perhaps even more disturbing is what has been omitted from reports. Consider these: 1. Questionable editing. NBC News broadcast an edited portion of the 911 in which Zimmerman can be heard saying, “This guy looks like he’s up to no good. He looks black.”

The entire conversation: Zimmerman: This guy looks like he’s up to no good. Or he’s on drugs or something. It’s raining, and he’s just walking around, looking about. 911 operator: OK, and this guy, is he black, white or Hispanic? Zimmerman: He looks black. 2. Sherman Ware. On Dec. 4, 2010, Justin Collison, son of Sanford Police Lt. Chris Collison, was caught on video attacking a black homeless man named Sherman Ware. After the investigation yielded no arrest of Justin Collison, Zimmerman printed and distributed flyers in Sanford’s black neighborhoods urging the community to hold the police department accountable. Pardon the pun, but no story — and perhaps especially this one — is pure black and white. Or, if you’re the New York Times, black and white-Hispanic. So, as the details of those fateful minutes of that cold February evening surface, remain diligent in your pursuit for the truth — just as state attorney Angela Corey promised to do in the courtroom. “We don’t prosecute by public pressure or petition,” she said. “We prosecute cases on the relevant facts of each case and on the laws of the state of Florida.”

beyond the grasp of an unsophisticated mind. To illustrate with an extreme case, if a county did approve a project with buildings having a height of 100 stories, capable of holding the population of Hong Kong; it wouldn’t change a thing on the property next door. Why? Because the market won’t let it happen. No one will finance it, no one will develop it, and no one will buy it. The market, the economy, larger demographic trends and the U.S. Constitution, will override almost anything government does, for better or worse. We can channel these forces, but we can’t countermand them. So, to: 1) the “last-guy-toarrive-and-buy-a-cheapcondo-who-wants-to-put-up-a wall-behind-him;” 2) the “community activists” who feed on them; and 3) the short-sighted, pseudo-populist politicians who cynically use them all, knock it off, please. Others, like my company, were here first, and others like you and me will

follow all of us — like it or not. We do, however, have some clear choices of where we grow, in what sequence we grow, and in how we grow. So let’s stop talking about “whether” and discuss where, when and how. Let’s further relate those factors to the financial markets, total cost of infrastructure, the wide variety of consumer preferences, economic development, contribution to the tax base, legal requirements (yes, they do matter) and consequences to the taxpayers. So ask yourself if you want things to continue as they are, adversarial and unsatisfactory to all, or you’d like to try something different, more consensus driven and effective. Thus, I will close by asking someone from Manatee County to co-author the next installment … to see if we can “kick this can down the road a bit.” Maybe we can begin a serious dialogue and end up closer to being on the same page. Rex Jensen is president and CEO of Schroeder-Manatee Ranch.

Additionally, CBH has partnered with Massachusetts General Hospital and its Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine to provide additional training for its staff at Harvard Medical School’s largest teaching hospital. “We have been committed to attempting to serve as many cancer patients and caregivers as within our reach,” CBH Board Chairman Carol Ann Kalish said. “The name change is emblematic of us taking the opportunity to see if we can cast an even wider net. “Your name is your identity, to a certain extent,” she said. “We want people feeling comfortable coming to us. We provide hope in a sometimes otherwise bleak psychological state. The (new) name, in general, speaks very clearly to what we do and also establishes broader perspective for what we want to do.” Since moving to Lakewood Ranch in the fall of 2010, the CBH has more than tripled its client base. LAKEWOOD RANCH — When Dave Shaver faced a diagnosis of prostate cancer about threeand-one-half years ago, he learned how scary a cancer diagnosis could be. But having served on the board of directors for the Cancer Support Community, now the Center for Building Hope (CBH), Shaver also knew he didn’t have to cower in fear. “I had been on the board long enough that I was not devastated,” Shaver said. “I knew so many people (who had gone through treatment). One of the things that’s most helpful about our organization is we provide a lot of information and a lot of opportunity to network with people who are going through the same (situation).” Shaver took advantage of the organization’s resources, getting referrals for doctors, attending a men’s support group and securing other information and resources to help him decide on his treatment and move forward confidently toward recovery. “The bottom line in my cancer story — and that of the other

EXPANSION/PAGE 1 Sunday, stemmed from both their requests for a campus closer to home, as well as a need to create more space at Bayside’s main facility. Although church leaders still are looking for a venue at which to hold services, Anderson said Bayside East Sarasota likely will open at a school. Craig King will serve as campus pastor. “We’re just really excited about it,” King said of the opportunity. “We love Sarasota. We love the people.” King said he is looking forward to the months ahead, as he works to foster a sense of community among Bayside’s existing members who are from the Sarasota area and will begin attending services there when the campus opens next fall. He’s already planning a campus picnic and a beach day to help build relationships and offer opportunities for families to be introduced to the church in an informal setting. A launch team for the East Sarasota campus will begin meeting

MALL/PAGE 1 department store should be announced at a later date. In total, the two-story $315 million center will include about 115 stores, more than half of which will be new to the market. Saks will occupy an 80,000-squarefoot space, while Macy’s and Dillard’s will occupy 160,000- and 180,000-square-foot spaces, respectively. “We’re extremely excited to partner with Taubman and to be moving forward and recommenc-

May 2 to prepare for the opening. “I’m really excited about what God is going to do down there,” King said. “We’re confident God’s out in front of this. We’re following after what he prepared.” For more, visit www.baysidecommunity.org. Contact Pam Eubanks at peubanks@yourobserver.com.

ing this project and finally bringing it to fruition,” Benderson Executive Director of Leasing Mark Chait said. The mall is slated to open in the fall of 2014. Taubman, a real estate investment trust, and Benderson, one of the largest privately held real estate companies nationwide, each will own 50% of the mall. Taubman will responsible for development, management and leasing. Taubman owns or has co-developed several other premier shopping destinations in Florida,

since Oct. 1, 2008 and Oct. 1, 2007, respectively. BRU informed Lakewood Ranch Town Hall officials of the pending fee changes earlier this month, and members of the Lakewood Ranch Inter-District Authority Board learned details of the proposal during a meeting April 17. “These are the rates we need to do to improve the service and to break even and recover our costs,” said Tony Chiofalo, vice president of Braden River Utilities, a subsidiary of Lakewood Ranch developer SchroederManatee Ranch. “These new supplies cost a lot of money, and there’s no way around it.” Lakewood Ranch residents, who are charged for irrigation water through their community development district special assessments, likely will see an increase of between $4 and $8 monthly for water usage. Part of the increase will come from rates charged by Sarasota — 40 cents per 1,000 gallons — which is increasing operating

including International Plaza in Tampa, the Mall at Millenia in Orlando and Waterside Shops at Pelican Bay in Naples. “The Mall at University Town Center will be one of the premier shopping destinations on the west coast of Florida, and it will be the preferred shopping destination in the Sarasota region for locals and visitors alike,” said Robert Taubman, president and CEO. Kathleen Ruiz, vice president of public relations for Saks, said the opening of Saks at University Town Center will result in the clo-

costs, Chiofalo said. Chiofalo said all customers of Braden River Utilities, not just the Inter-District Authority and the CDDs it represents, will see rate increases. Lakewood Ranch Town Hall officials said the increase will have a major impact on next year’s budgets for Community Development Districts 1, 2, 4 and 5 and the IDA and may force boards to further delay planned improvements and other projects, or move forward with them more strategically. Regardless, an increase in assessments will not be avoidable. “(The CDDs) all have things they’d like to do or need to do,” Town Hall Executive Director Eva Rey said. “We have to balance the wants and needs during the budget development process (we are going through now).” IDA Chairman Tom Green asked for BRU to revisit a termsof-service agreement to ensure water pressure and quality are truly addressed by the improvements. Bob Simons, vice president of development for SMR, said 10

sure of its Westfield Southgate location. “We are moving the other store to this store,” Ruiz said, noting the new anchor space will more than double the store’s size. “We are excited about really expanding our store.” Macy’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications and External Affairs Jim Sluzewski said the new Macy’s would not impact stores it operates in the area. “Sarasota-Bradenton is an important and growing market for

wells feed the Lakewood Ranch area, and because those wells continue to be pumped, the quality of the water they produce will continue to decline. “If we keep pumping harder and harder on the wells, the water quality is going to deteriorate,” Simons said. “Our goal is to try to replace the well water with reclaimed water. It’s better water.” The Southwest Florida Water Management District, a state agency responsible for managing area water and related natural resources, also is pressing BRU to utilize reclaimed water in the existing Lakewood Ranch and is requiring its use as development in the community continues, particularly in the area known as the Stewardship District. BRU officials hope the ability to provide more water will help eliminate irrigation water pressure problems by Lakewood Ranch residents. A new watering schedule also is expected to help resolve the issue. Contact Pam Eubanks at peubanks@yourobserver.com.

Macy’s, and the building of the Mall at (University Town Center) was a good opportunity for a new store,” he said. “We have no plans to close any Macy’s store anywhere in the country.” A representative from Dillard’s said the company has not yet decided whether it will close its Westfield Southgate location. “The company has made no announcements about future closings in the area,” said spokeswoman Julie Bull. Dreams come true at weekend camp Eleven families from throughout Tampa Bay spent the weekend creating memories and enjoying life during Family Weekend Camp April 20-22, at Dream Oaks Camp in the East County. The annual camp, put together by The Foundation for Dreams, The Children’s Cancer Center and the Center for Building Hope, is for families who have a child that has been recently diagnosed with cancer or cancer-related illnesses. Throughout the weekend, children and their families enjoyed arts and crafts, sports and games, horseback riding, canoeing, nature walks, scavenger hunts, a family dance and more. Eight-year-old Lea Sellwood rode for years before battling leukemia.

Izzy Dean, 2, thoroughly enjoyed her first horseback ride.

Six-year-old Scott Wolf carefully painted his picture frame. Left: Sixteen-year-old Melissa Mungo, who loves horses, got to groom one for the very first time. “I feel like they can understand,” she says.

Seven-year-old Jenizalee Garza had a blast hulahooping.

Thanks to the successful treatment of our rotator cuff injuries, we are all actively enjoying our passion for SPORTS once again. Rotator cuff muscle injuries are very common. Due to the function of these muscles, sports which involve shoulder rotation such as tennis and golf, often put the rotator cuff muscles under great stress, resulting in an inability to play. A variety of treatment options are available.

Ranch’s Mohanty twins earn state titles

Lakewood Ranch seniors Arnav and Arsav Mohanty won seven medals, including the overall doubles state championship, at the Class 3A state tournament.

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Arnav Mohanty felt an extra dose of motivation when he stepped onto the court for the finals of the team doubles tournament at the Class 3A state tournament. It was there, two years ago, that the then-sophomore, who was competing in his first state tournament, watched the title slip away, after he and his partner, Cooper Maxwell, who

were up a set and a break and were two games away from winning, lost to Barron Collier’s Brett Clark and Alex Robles in three sets. Knowing it was his final chance to win a state championship, Mohanty wasn’t about to let history repeat itself. With his twin brother, Arsav, by his side, Arnav defeated

Braden River High senior Elena Lopez is congratulated after driving in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

MATCHING

CROWNS

Both the Braden River and Lakewood Ranch softball teams captured district championships last week.

Lady Pirates defeat Sarasota BRADEN RIVER — Senior Elena Lopez had the game won well before she stepped into the batter’s box. At least in the minds of her coaches. With the game tied 4-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning of the Class 7A-District 11 championship April 20, the Braden River High assistant coaches looked to the players in the dugout and told them to put down their bats and batting helmets. They then turned to Lopez, who was due up third in the inning, and told her she was going to win the game. Lopez wasn’t quite sure what to make of her coaches’ confidence, but one thing was for certain — she wasn’t about to let them and the rest of her teammates down. With one out and a runner on second, Lopez hit a single to center field, driving in Hannah Ryan and propelling Braden River to a 5-4 victory over Sarasota and its first district championship in three years. “I was just looking for anything to get Hannah in,” Lopez said. “I really wanted this.” The Lady Pirates, who beat Sarasota twice during the regular season, found themselves trailing early in the game, when the Lady Sailors scored a run in the top of the first inning off of Braden River ace Courtney Mirabella. Braden River responded in the bottom of the fourth inning when Lopez hit a RBI double. The Lady Pirates took their first

Lady Mustangs power way to title Behind the arm of senior pitcher Huntyre Elling, the top-seeded Lady Mustangs (216) defeated Seminole Osceola 9-1 in the Class 6A-District 12 championship April 20. Elling allowed two hits and walked two while striking out eight in six innings of work. “It is not possible to fully explain how much Huntyre has meant to this team,” coach Tony Cummins said. “She is an amazing pitcher (who has) that ‘I believe can beat anybody (mentality).’ We have a group of amazing athletes and kids, but Huntyre completes the team. She is the ‘shining star’ who has given everything to lead this team.” Lakewood notched 14 hits and three

The Mohantys also captured the overall doubles championship with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Tallahassee Leon’s Alberto Ayala and Josh Record. “It’s obviously really satisfying,” Arnav said. “Brett Clark is No. 4 in the nation, and Cooper and I played him two years ago and were up a set and a break and lost. So it’s even more special to beat them. “Having my brother there, that made it easier, too,” Arnav said. “I knew we could win if we played well.” Arsav also won the No. 2 singles title. “I had a great tournament,” Arsav said. “I was pretty nervous (at first), but it all worked out great, and I played well.” The Mohantys, who finished with a combined seven medals, walked off the court following their final state tournament appearance not quite sure how to react. “We still haven’t really understood what that means yet,” Arnav said of knowing their high school tennis career is over. “Our goal was to win states and do the best that we could,” Arsav said. “We’re definitely sad knowing we’re

COMMENT/PAGE 23 Shannon Etten. Barron Collier went on to win the team championship over Lakewood Ranch, which it more than likely would have done, even if Cari and Ashley had been able to play in their original spots.

The Mohantys began playing tennis when they were 12 years old, after their parents, both avid tennis fans, handed each of them a racket. The two quickly developed a knack — and a love — for the game. “It’s so unpredictable on any given day,” Arnav said. “You have to have that fight. Even when you’re not playing well, you still have to fight.” Arsav agreed. “The different shots you can hit — there are so many different things,” Arsav said. “It’s amazing.

You can fool your opponent with a variety of shots. I definitely enjoy the competition and the excitement of trying to beat other people.” Over the past five years, Arnav and Arsav have led the Mustangs to three consecutive state tournament appearances and currently are both ranked in the top 45 in the Florida USTA U18 rankings. The two enjoy playing singles and doubles, as long as they aren’t playing against one another. Typically, the two brothers ask to be on opposite halves of the draw, so they won’t play each other until the finals. Then, the two brothers will battle it out. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work out that way. But in those cases, the two take turns deciding who will advance. “If it’s a final, it’s good,” Arsav said. “If we have to play each other before the finals, then one withdraws, because you waste energy. We just take turns pulling out.” The two brothers have faced each other six times, with Arnav holding a 5-1 advantage over his brother. But does that make Arnav, who is ranked a few points higher than his brother a better tennis player? Or is Arsav, who has both individual and state championships to his name the better player? “You tell us,” Arnav said with a laugh. “We’re pretty equal.” Contact Jen Blanco at jblanco@ yourobserver.com.

Cari and Ashley bounced back from their game of musical chairs, defeating Fort Lauderdale’s Jennifer Moore and Jaclyn Rock to win the overall doubles championship — a first for the Lakewood girls tennis program. But, although the girls both walked

away with gold medals hanging around their necks, the travesty of justice remains. Cari earned the right to compete for an individual state championship, but that opportunity was ripped away by another coach’s desire for a trophy for his display case. So much for sportsmanship.

not going to see our teammates next year. We’ve had a really good time these last four years of high school tennis.” The Mohantys may have closed their high school tennis careers, but their days playing tennis are far from over. On April 11, the brothers inked their national letters-of-intent to play tennis for Mercer University in Georgia. The boys chose Mercer over the University of Central Florida, Furman and Wake Forest because of the location, the coaching staff and most importantly because they could go together. “They offered us both full rides,” Arnav said. “A lot of the big-name schools only had one spot. We were always going together. I think the state doubles championship proves that.”

Do you have a favorite subject?

The second one was more ironic, because right before that, my coach asked me if I had ever hit two home runs in one game.

Science. You get to learn the specifics about everyday things. It broadens your horizons to things you thought you already knew about.

Would you rather be in the field or at the plate?

Do you have any siblings? I have an older sister, Sammantha, who is 20 years old.

It depends on how well I’ve been hitting and the skill level of the other team’s offense. I like playing teams with more offensive skill, because it’s more exciting.

If you could play another sport for a day, what would it be? Gymnastics. It’s challenging and all self-driven. You have to trust yourself to do the apparatuses.

How did you get into softball? We went to register my older sister when I was 4 years old. At the time, T-ball was for 5- and 6-year-olds. They said they would make an exception for me if I really wanted to play. I was the first 4-year-old at Miss Manatee (Softball).

LAKEWOOD RANCH

Over the past year, Lakewood Ranch High senior Hunter Sagar has been crowned a men’s amateur champion, a high school classic champion and, most recently, a state champion. Now, the Mustangs golfer can now add Division I athlete to his impressive résumé. On April 16, Sagar signed a national let-

ter-of-intent to play golf for Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y. “It’s always been my dream to see how far golf can take me, and I’m happy to be able to play on the college level,” Sagar said. “It’s exciting for me.” Sagar, who plans to major in engineering and possibly minor in business, chose Canisius over Iowa, DePaul, Florida Atlantic, West Florida and Dartmouth, because of the location and the opportunity to start playing right away. “I’ll probably start my freshman year, and I won’t have to sit out,” Sagar said. “I want to play. I didn’t want to go somewhere where I wasn’t going to play.” Sagar began playing golf when he was about Hunter Sagar 8 years old, but he didn’t begin playing competitively until four years later. Since then, Sagar has excelled on the course. Sagar won the bronze medal at the International Junior Masters tournament before winning the city of Bradenton’s Men’s Amateur Championship and the Honda Classic high school championship earlier this school year. Most recently, Sagar helped lead the Mustangs to a 103-0 record and a Class 2A state title. Sagar will spend the summer continuing to train at the Missing Link Golf Academy, with the hopes of qualifying for and competing in the Florida Amateur, the U.S. Open Qualifier, the Porter Cup Qualifier and the Junior Masters, among others, before heading to Buffalo. “I’m just looking forward to the experience, my teammates and playing at a higher level — a Division I level,” Sagar said. BRADEN RIVER — Braden River High midfielder Ivo Lima has spent nearly a decade preparing for the opportunity to play at the next level. And now, he will. On April 19, alongside his parents Joao and Caelina, coach and friends, Lima signed a national letter-of-intent to play soccer for Jacksonville University. “It means success because you play soccer to move on and keep going,” Lima said. “That’s the next level.” A native of Brazil, Lima has been kicking a soccer ball for as long as he can remember. But it wasn’t until about three years, after he moved to Florida, that Lima began playing competitively. “I’m from Brazil, and that’s what you do,” Lima said. “I just enjoy pretty much everything about it.” Since then, Lima has played on a variety of travel teams while helping lead the Pirates to a district runner-up finish this season. Lima, who plans to major in business management, chose Jacksonville University over Florida Atlantic University because of its size and up-and-coming program. “It’s a small school,” Lima said. “It’s Division I, but it’s not the 20,000 kids. It’s mostly new. They’re pretty much starting from scratch. They’re bringing in 12 new kids and only have three starters (returning), so positions are up for grabs. I just have to do my best, and hopefully I’ll get to start.”

lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, when senior catcher Ashley Allard hit her first career home run over the centerfield wall. “When I hit it, it didn’t feel like it was going out, but it was really exciting,” Allard said. The lead proved to be short-lived, when Sarasota scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead. But the Lady Pirates, who beat Venice 10-0 in the district semifinals April 18, refused to submit. Braden River tied the game in the bottom half of the inning when Allard, who drove in the final run in the semifinals, hit a two-run double. “I knew Courtney had our backs,” Lopez said. “She wouldn’t let us get any more, and our hitting was coming around.” Mirabella, who finished with eight strikeouts, shut down Sarasota’s next six batters before Lopez connected for the game-winning hit. “They’re a tough team to beat,” coach Doug Powell said. “They hit the

The Lady Mustangs entered the championship coming off an offensive explosion, in which they scored 11 runs in the fourth inning, capping off a 17-2 victory over St. Petersburg Dixie Hollins in the district semifinals April 18, which was stopped after four innings because of the 15-run mercy rule. Quillan Toler went 2-for-3 with a home run and five RBIs, and Goodale went 3-for-3 with a RBI and three runs scored to lead the way for the Lady Mustangs at the plate. Jenn Trotter went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored; Dana Hutchins went 2-for-2 with a RBI and two runs scored; and Amber Ozment went 3-for-3 with a RBI. “As simple as this sounds, the reason we have been having such great offensive success is that we have great hitters,” Cummins said. “Not just the top of the lineup — but one through
