Dear Flourish,
I am having a hard time staying organized. Help me find an easy system that keeps all my digital scrapbooking files organized... Thanks, Scattered Dear Scattered, There are a few basic start-up steps when it comes to organizing your digital files: 1. Drawers - Just like a real file cabinet that has drawers, hanging folders, and file folders that hold your files, your computer has the same type of system built right in with endless customization. Start in your “My Documents” folder, or another folder titled with your name. Inside, the first folders you create should be called “Scrapbook Supplies”, and “Scrapbook Pages” that act as your “drawers.” 2. Next, you need your “hanging file folders”, so create folders named after the stores you purchased the items from, like “Store One” and “Store Two”, or after the designer who created the kits, like “Marilyn Monroe” or “Judy Garland” (who knew, right?). 3. Files folders: Now, save your .zip files into the above mentioned “store” or “designer” folders and then extract them into the same folders, so they are all kept in the same place. You can delete the .zip files if you want, but I keep mine and back them up.
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR... I can’t believe it’s May already... except for the beautiful reminders of springtime in my little corner of the nation. With all the flowers blooming and birds singing, it has become my favorite time of year, although it does not last long in Southern California! May means Mother’s Day for the U.S. and that means it’s time to celebrate our mothers, ourselves, our grandmothers and even our daughters as we pass our digital legacy on from one generation to the next. I can’t think of a better mother’s day gift than the gift of recording the “everyday” history for your family, and that’s what we digi scrappers are all about. Flourish has some great features this month, including at mother’s day gift box tutorial that is easy and adorable. You might want to tag your files with a program that keeps them all organized by “tag” such as ACDSee Photo Manager if that will help you, but it’s not necessary. The most important thing to remember is - ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR FILES! This will save you hours of work and stress, and that’s always a good thing!

Erin’s style is clean, eclectic, and easy on the eyes. Check out her shop and see her fantastic wordstrips and simply gorgeous paper packs. We asked Erin a few questions about herself, and this is what she had to say...
Q. What would I find in your refrigerator right now? A. Leftover roast chicken and black beans and rice, full produce drawers, milk and half and half for coffee, yeast for making bread, WAY too many condiment jars, and lots of yogurt. Q. What is your favorite color? A. To wear, most definitely green but when I am designing I am so drawn to pink! Q. What is your favorite drink? A. Starbucks Toffee Nut Latte (a sometimes treat) or any good coffee! Q. What is the last book you read? A. I am a HUGE reader and often have new book ready to go before the current one is

over. But I like light reading or thrillers. The last book I read was ‘Born in Ice’ by Nora Roberts. The story was set not far from where my mom grew up in Ireland. Q. If you could be any character in fiction, whom would you be? A. I would like to write my own character, one that had plenty of time in her studio and someone who cooked for her. Who was wildly outspoken, yet compassionate. Who knew what she wanted and didn’t want in life and clearly articulated that. And I would want her to have the time to expand on at least 75 percent of her creative ideas! Q. What is your favorite song? A. My goodness what a hard question, I have sang since I could talk, and I have so many! Anything by Kathy Mattea, The Eagles, John Denver or the Indigo Girls! Q. What did you want to be when you were little? A. An archeologist (I was a VERY curious child). Q. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about yourself? A. I have recently started to art journal and I have some products I am working on from what I have been exploring through this. Q. Can you tell us about your creative process? A. I am constantly having ideas so when something pops up I will jot it down or do a quick sketch and then when I have time, I will sit down and expand on it. Most of the time I don’t know where I am going until I get there, I will play with things on the screen and just move things until they feel RIGHT. And when I am in the zone, the rest of the world in gone. I can’t tell you how many times that I have jumped and screamed when someone walked up to talk to me as I was designing. When everything is flowing, I am in my own little world!

Q. How did you get into digital scrapbooking and designing? A. Back in May 2005, I went to a CK Show for the company I worked for. I was a graphic designer for them and they were thinking of opening a scrapbooking catalog. As I walked around I KNEW that somehow I would be part of this industry, but as hard as I tried I couldn’t do paper scrapping, maybe it was because I was so used to working on the computer. Fast forward to April 2008, I googled Digital Scrapbooking, downloaded some freebies and just didn’t stop. I felt that digi scrapping was a perfect fit for me and with an infant daughter and a love of photography, I was off and running. Within a year and a half, I had won a guest CT, been asked onto a perm CT and then in November of 2009, I spoke with Nancie at ScrapArtist and she asked me to join their team of designers. I truly love what I do and am so thankful for the opportunity I have been given!

You’re obsessed with...? Finding the most perfect cupcake recipe and then of course mastering it. Feel free to send your favorite recipes my way! Be honest- are you a crazy Twilight fan like the rest of us? If so, Team Edward or Team Jacob? Oh, I do love my Twilight, but I must confess...the movies tainted my images of Jacob AND Edward. Now I’m more obsessed with the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Twi-hards should read this series, for sure! Color of your manicure right now.... No manicures ever for me. I can’t stand the feeling of polish on my fingernails, BUT a great pedicure is always in order!! The color on my toenails right now is Lincoln Park After Dark--a dark, deep shade of purple.
Shoe size? An 8. How boring is that!?! What’s on your DVR/TiVo right now? Modern family and The Office (so entertaining). Brothers and Sisters and FlashForward (so much drama). Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution and The Biggest Loser (so inspiring). What’s your current FB status update? “So what crazy shenanigans did your child do today while at school? I bet my boy outbeat anything your child did. Oy! And he’s not even in Kindergarten yet!!” ... I guess you’ll have to be my FB friend to find out!!
Get to know Andrea! Tell us a bit about your scrap process. Do you use templates, do you find color inspiration anywhere, how long does it take you to complete a page, how often do you scrap, etc. When I’m in a scrapping rut, a great template is my “go to”. I also love perusing the MSA gallery and marking favorite layouts that inspire me. When I first started scrapping, I spent a ridiculous amount of time on my computer scrapping. Now, I’m lucky if I have time to do even one layout a week :( . How long have you been scrapping? How did you start? I have been digital scrapping since August of 2008. A few IRL friends of mine introduced me to it and I fell in love. It became an obsession and I have slowly learned to find a balance between real life and scrapping!! Any CTs you’d like to mention? I CT for Erica Zane and Denise Beatty Originals. I also help with advertising at ScrapMatters.com. BIO: I am a SAHM with 4 kiddos...3 boys and 1 princess. My husband and I have been married for 11 1/2 years and have made our home in Northern Virginia. Mother’s Day Hybrid Treasures By Vivienne Oestergaard
Presents for mothers are usually difficult items to pick out. What better choice than a homemade one for a one of a kind gift item! Perusing the internet for ideas, I found this tutorial for a sweet little box with the trendy look of a purse. What I did was to enlarge it so that it could hold photos or cards! The original box came from a template created by Julie Buhler and the inspiration came from Josee Smuck. You can head over to vivaartistry.blogspot.com for a digital template of the larger version of the box. Main box-8x10 inches (20x25.5cm) Fold lines 1.25 inches (3cm) on each long side Fold line 4 and 6 inches (10x15cm) Top-7 1/2x 4 inches (18x10cm) Fold line ¾ in (2 cm) around Supplies: • Tools--Scissors, craftknife, ruler, hole punch, tape, gluestick, square punch, circle punch • Cardboard (I recycled a cereal box)

• Template (from vivaartistry.blogspot. com) • Papers (I used Flutter by Mari Koegelenberg and Madame Wing at the DigiChick • Ribbon • 2 beads • Tiny flowers • Velcro strip (stickered) Instructions: 1. Print out the templates Madame Wing’s & MKC’s All Aflutter - The Kit and use it to cut out the cardboard. Cut the dark lines. Score the lighter fold lines. Score by using the ruler and craftknife. Make sure you do not slice the cardboard all the way through on the fold lines. Scoring is just to assist with the fold. 2. On the main box, fold all along the fold lines to form the shape. On the short side, tape the two edges together. On the boxtop, do the same and fold and tape the corners. 3. Make sure the top fits over the box bottom. 4. In Photoshop, select your paper, drag to the box top
template and clip it to the paper template. On the layer for fold lines, turn opacity to 50% so that it shows very lightly. Print out your paper. Do this for the main box also. 5. Again, cut out the paper and fold along all the fold lines. Test it out on the cardboard box. Use your gluestick to adhere the paper to the cardboard. If there is extra paper on the top, fold it over into the box. 6. Do the same with the box top. 7. Punch 2 square pieces 1 ½ x 1 ½ inches (3.8 x 3.8 cm) and cut into 4 triangles. Glue the triangles in the corners of the box. 8. Punch 2 circle pieces 1x1 inch (2.5 x 2.5 cm) and glue to the top of the box where the ribbons would come out
for the handle. Punch holes thru the circle and the top with a sharp tool. Insert the ribbons into the beads and then into the box top and knot on the inside of the box top. 9. Cut 2 strips 1 x .5 inch (2.5 x 1 cm) and glue to the back of the box and the box top to make a hinge to hold the top to the box. Cut one more strip similar in size with an arrow on one side. This is for the front latch. Glue to the inside of the box top. Place the Velcro on the inside of the latch and the box. This should hold the top to the bottom pretty firmly. Take 3 tiny paper flowers, crinkle them up, and with adhesive, stack them up. Glue them onto the latch.
