Who are its members? Teens who matter · . a lot today, even more tomorrow. Where are they going? Out. To see the world, to change it for the better. What makes them so sure? Instinct and hope. EACH STUDENT HAS HIS OWN SPECIAL MEMORIES

The year 1967-68 was a big change for Williston High School. TI1e freshman class was added making our schoo 1 a four year high schoo 1. This year has held many happy and sad memories--the winning laughter at a Coyote game, the high hopes of going to "state", an after-school coke on a warm afternoon, the day you got your date for Prom, the parties at Canteen, the winning of Coyote Capers, the wearing of the school ring, the crowning of the Homecoming Queen, and the flowing of tears at Commencement. The aim of the 1968 Coyote was to help you relive each of these mem ories and remind you of your wonderful days at Williston High School. With gratitude to Mr. Beggs, our advisor, the Williston Herald, the Plains Reporter, Artice Studio and Marek's Studio, we present this annual to the students of Williston High School. The Editor Claire Andre

THE YEARBOOK IS DEDICATED

"Consider that I labored not for myself only, but for all them that seek learning. "

This yearbook is dedicated to the memory of Mrs. Bruce (Jane) Alfson, who at the time of her death on September 9, 1967 was serving her third term on

the Williston school board. May her untiring efforts in the interests of better education not go unremem bered.

When the first days of tumult and confusion die; the student finds himself facing the real substance of what school offers him. The student who is in school just because he has to be will never enjoy the opportunities that could be his. The student who is aware and receptive will feel the excitement of his work here.

FACULTY The invitation to involvement in extra-curricular activities as well as your school work is cordially extended by the W.H.S. administration Without these wonderful people we could not have the great opportunities that we now have at WILLISTON HIGH SCHOOL

Mr. Easton and Mr. Howe have now completed their second year at Williston High School. The whole student body is very grateful that they have been so patient in helping us with our individual problems. Another great asset is the school board. This group of concerned parents works hard to make our policies so that WHS can be the great school it is. Because of these wonderful leaders, WHS is not just a school, but a great school. Thanks to all of you!

A CLASS FAMOUS FOR VICTORIES When the Class of '68 entered WHS they had high hopes for their high school future. They got off to a rather slow start at their first attempt in competition with their big pencil sharpener grinding a Magi. But then came Capers '66 and an unexpected vie tory with THE ORANGE CORPSE. This victory gave them the incentive to work harder to reach higher goals. Goal number one was Sophomore Stag with the theme of CAST YOUR FA TE TO THE WIND . PRESS 'N FOR VICTORY started their junior year out with a bang! Their winning float was a giant size iron pressing a lion. Then came Capers victory number two. GOOD OLD DAYS brought excitement to the class and brought Morbid U to life l THE PEOPLE VERSUS MAXINE LOWE, a dramatic play was presented by the class. Next on the busy schedule was banquet and prom. Finally, after many hours of planning and hard work, the juniors and seniors danced in an exotic Viennes Ballroom. At last came the final year for the Class of '68. Their float, WE 'LL TAKE THIS LION DOWN was a cute, big lion lying on a bed. With THE LAST RESORT the seniors captured the traveling trophy after working, planning and winning for three years. Anoth er big event in '68 was when the mighty Coyote basketball team went to Grand Forks and came home as the North Dakota State Champs! The cheerleaders and pep club kept up the reputation of "We 're Number One" by bringing home the coveted Golden Feather trophy. Proof of the Seniors school spirit came when they won the right to have their name painted on the orange and black pep jug. For two days in March, the class presented the military play SEVEN DAYS IN MAY . At prom, they spent a romantic even ing in "Brigadoon", a legendary Scottish village. Do Not Say Go, But Go Thyself . With this in mind the Class of '68 is ready to accept the responsibilities and challenges of the world.

Let's face it, the Seniors are tops, but, being number two, the Juniors try harder. These industrious fortune-seekers have added to their riches by collecting dues, and by selling ice-cream bars at the Coyote games. The Juniors are a class on the move.

JUNIORS There are athletes, honor students, activity leaders, and talented musicians. For Juniors, this was the year of a class play; this was the year of the Junior-Senior Prom. Hardwork and effort have made the Class of '69 ready to attain the heights for which it is striving.

Usually, the youngest class at the high school, the Sophomores usually go unnoticed. However, this year the Freshmen were added to share this honor. But, no one can say that about this year's Sophomores, for the results of their efforts have been seen all over the school. During this rewarding year they successfully sponsored a dance,

SOPHOMORES received first class honors in Homecoming float competition and took part in Coyote Capers. All in all, it was a successful year for the Sophomores filled with fun as well as work.

As sophomores the Class of '70' had a great year. Homecoming found them producing the float, "Drive 'Em Loco, That's Our Motive." It came complete with the Minot Ryan Lion run over by Engine #70. The Coyote Express thundered to first place in float competition. Their Capers performance, "For Whom the Siren Screams" was a portrayal of the criminal mind, with the minor theme that crime doesn't pay. This year's class officers were: Jim Stenehjem, president; Laurie Huss, vice -president; Peggy Andre, secretary; and Donna Neff, treasurer.

We would like to welcome the Freshman class to Williston High School. We cannot say that this class went unnoticed, either, for without them School would have been very dull. They successfully participated in the Homecoming festivities and were put in charge of the advertising Coyote Capers

FRESHMEN Their work was terrific and they should be commended on a job well done. Good luck to the Freshman class in their future years at Williston High School.

87

THE FIRST FRESHMAN CLASS PROVED THAT THEY ARE MATURE ENOUGH TO BE HERE

The freshman class advisors are: Mr. Kuschel (Chairman) Mr. Swenson Mrs. Witt Mr. Knutson Mrs. Don Larson Mr. Strand Mr. Don Nelson Mr. Bauer Mr. Halmrast

Officers are: Dwight Stenseth, vice-president; Susan Skurdal, secretary; Stephanie Hornstein, president; and Sonia Nervig, treasurer.

This year a new part was added to Williston High School because the freshman class was coming up. This made a great difference in the population of our school as they have the most students in their class. "Coyotes Spear It" was the freshman's 'all -out effort' Homecoming theme. Although it received fourth place, the experience earned by the students who worked on it was well worth the time and effort. The freshmen were put in charge of publicity for Coyote Capers. Because of the great job done by all the committees and the co-chairmen the attendance at Capers was never better. They are now eagerly awaiting their turn at Capers. The students picked to guide the class of '71' were Stephanie Hornstein, president; Dwight Stenseth, vice-president; Susan Skurdal, secretary; and Sonia Nervig, treasurer. The class of '71' hopes to be successful with their efforts in the future years.

What is an involved student? The use of "involved" is understandable, but it should go further Isn't the student who devotes long hours to a Capers production involved? How about those who spend time practicing for plays? Aren't they committed? The many opportunities for activity facing W.H.S. students today, should, in effect, be assessed for their contribution to the development of the individual

ACTIVITIES and to the improvement, however small, of his world. In the modern era of expanding social and educational pressures, the student who utilizes both time and energy to work for the benefit of his fellow students and his school is bound to cultivate his own personal development.

COYOTE CAPERS '68 IS BIG SUCCESS Coyote Capers '68 was held on February 10, 12, and 13. All performances were very well attended, and Capers was again a huge success. Capers is staged annually to raise money to finance a foreign exchange stu dent. It originated as an all-school talent show and later developed into individual class productions. Each class competes for possession of the coveted traveling trophy.

Mr. Gary Nelson, WHS faculty member, was the over-all advisor for Capers '68.

Jerry Chapman and Sonja Torgerson, Master and Mistress of Ceremonies, interviewed Pam Bergman, President of the AFS Club, before showtime.

114

The Class of '68 was once more victorious in winning Coyote Capers. Their production, entitled "The Last Resort, " was an entertaining comedy much enjoyed by the audience.

The Junior Class brought a wild western town to life.

The Sophomores proved that crime does pay in their first attempt at Capers.

115

SENIORS WIN TRAVELING TROPHY Under the leadership of Anne Tor vie and Bill Ross, the Seniors took first place in Capers '68. Their production, "The Last Resort," took place in a "haunted" house with skeleton dancers, a singing picture, a real bear, and an enchanted frog. CITY OF BRIGADOON

Brigadoon, a mystic city in Scotland provided the theme for this year's prom. Couples entered over a rose trellised bridge, to the music of "Love is Blue" provided by the Seven Dimensions. Pink and silver streamers flowed from all corners of the ballroom and were gathered into a bouquet of balloons in the center. Couples danced amid pink clouds and rose gardens. It was truly a mystical evening filled with fun and excitement for all.

THE FUTURE OF AGRICULTURE DEPENDS ON THE YOUTH OF TODAY The Williston FFA has stood the test of time, since its beginning in 1930. Wealth in North Dakota is still primarily from the soil -through its crops and livestock. More than 1500 opportunities appear each year for Agtrained college graduates. Training beyond high school is a must in today's complicated world. Many improvement projects are carried by the boys to learn new skills in agri culture. This training is designed to help FFA boys become "the future leaders of tomorrow.'' When one partakes in athletics, he pledges himself to long, grinding hours of practice Competition is probably the key to involvement and every athlete feels the need to prove himself. He has to work, eat, sleep and think his sportso he does his best - he must He studies - because he must Some don't and they find themselves cut And yet on the practice field it is 100% of himself.

ATHLETICS And still there is that inner reminder in each athlete which says, "I think I can do better," so he keeps striving for perfection, never reaching it But that is alright with him because he knows it is impossible. Meanwhile, there is dedication in his driving This is victory through involvement.

A-SQUAD CHEERLEADERS LEAD PEP CLUB TO 'GOLDEN FEATHER' TROPHY This year our A-squad cheerleaders were especially great in many ways. Besides covering the halls with posters and signs, they helped to lead the pep club, coyotes, and fans during our victorious season. This year without their enthusiastic energy, pep, and spirit, we could never have won the coveted 'Golden Feather' trophy.

MEET THE COYOTES The 1967 Coyotes finished out the season with a 4 - 4 - 2 record. Bruce Iverson, Dave Hastings, and Greg Hoffelt, were named "ALL WEST" at the end of the season. The Coyotes displayed good teamwork and sportsmanship on the field but without the help of our great coaches and great school spirit, they wouldn't have done as well as they did.

COACH FIREBALL

This year's varsity basketball team rolled on to a smashing season's record of 18 wins and 2 losses to win the W. D. A. trophy. Moving on to further glory at the Minot Regionals play off, they scored 3 wins and no losses to obtain the Northwest Regional Trophy. STATE! To achieve the last trophy was almost inconceivable to everyone, but there was a secret hope. First, Fargo South, a victory, second, Grand Forks, St. James, we smothered their Royal pride. The championship garn ewas the finale to a great season and tournament record. VICTORY! Coyotes-92-Red River-82. The Coyotes' 92 points in the final game broke a tourney record for the most points scored by one team in a state title match. The Coyotes shared honors with Red River in breaking the previous total point record of both teams in a title game, as well as the total in any single tournament game. The Coyotes really are NO. l! 188

WHS TRACK A SPORT ENJOYED BY ALL The track boys came through the season in fine standing. The team placed six boys in seven events at the state meet in Valley City. Although the team was not too large it did a fine job of representing our school. Coach Reinhiller was pleased with the efforts of his boys and next year looks to another promising year with great potential coming up in the team's younger members.

This was the first season for girls' track and it started with a smashing success when over one-hundred tried out for the team. Those who made the team were a very energetic and hard working group. The weather forced the cancellation of several of their meets but they did a fine job in those they attended. This is a very young group with a bright future.

The edition of the W.H.S. 'Coyote' has been a trying, often exasperating and yet strangely rewarding experience. When advance sales finally convinced the staff that the '68 yearbook could be a reality without financial disaster, the task was begun. With much enthusiasm, the staff worked far into the night many times. Thanking all those who helped make this yearbook a success would be an endless task, but some simply cannot go unmentioned. To Cynthia Fay, my photographer, goes my greatest appreciation. It's hard to thank someone who never let you down, who didn't believe there was such a word as "impossible." Cynthia Hapip managed to be a very helpful Assistant Editor, running errands, and doing the many things that no one would believe existed in putting out an annual.

ADVERTISING Greg Lee, busy in so many activities proved to be a very successful, capable, and efficient Business Manager. To Mr. Beggs, goes great appreciation as a very capable and worthy advisor. Also, a very special thanks to my family, for putting up with me when I was in a depressed mood, especially my mother for helping me file and proofread the papers which constantly cluttered our home. Last, but certainly not least, I would like to thank Artice Studio and Marek Studio, the Plains Reporter and the Williston Herald for photographs, also the many advertising sponsors who helped make our book possible. Knowing and working with all of you has been a privilege. Claire Andre, Editor
