A CONSTANT EVOLUTION OF THE RANGE Welcome to the Summer edition of Volvo Business. To say we have been busy since our last edition earlier this year is an understatement. As you will read in the issue, we’ve made a host of changes to our line-up to ensure our cars continue to represent outstanding value to companies and their drivers. There are significant changes to our low-emission DRIVe range – we now have seven DRIVe models with CO2 emissions of less than 120g/km, meaning they attract the lowest 13% diesel benefit-in-kind tax banding. This group of models includes the all-new S60 and V60 DRIVe models, as well as improved versions of the V70 and S80. We’ve also made a raft of changes to our ever-popular S40 and V50 line-ups, with lower prices and extra equipment added as standard, making them even more attractive to user-choosers. But don’t just take our word for it – independent research has revealed that Volvo is the most improved manufacturer in terms of cutting CO2 emissions (see story right), while sales figures show that we recorded a near 20% growth in corporate sales in 2010. More fleets are switching to Volvo cars as companies and drivers recognise the taxation and running cost benefits of running low-emission DRIVe models. Volvo reported a near 20% increase in corporate sales during 2010 and, with the take-up among fleets of the low-emission DRIVe models possibly reaching 60% of corporate sales, that trend is likely to continue. The 19.7% growth in Volvo fleet sales in 2010 is set against an increase of just over 9% in the entire corporate sector. It comes after Volvo created a team of six business development managers (BDMs) who are tasked with increasing appointments with fleet decision-makers operating fleets of between 100 and 300 vehicles. The team will also support Volvo’s 20-centre nationwide business centre network with sales to fleets of between five and 100 vehicles. The new BDM team is working in conjunction with Volvo’s team of six area development managers, building relationships with companies operating 300 vehicles or more, as well as maintaining current fleet accounts, targeting public sector sales and building awareness among affinity schemes and daily rental business through dealerships. James Shires, Volvo’s national corporate sales operations manager, said: “We know from experience that once a fleet decision-maker or driver gets behind the wheel of one of our cars for any length of time it makes its way on to the company’s car choice list and is chosen by employees. “The BDMs are informing a greater number of fleets about the Volvo product range, how the range has changed over the past couple of years and its suitability for corporate use. The statistics already show that we are getting on to more choice lists, which are steadily building fleet sales.”
ADDED VALUE WITH S40 AND V50
Volvo has announced a number of revisions to the S40 and V50 ranges, with price reductions and extra equipment for the majority of variants. V50 ES specification now comes with full colour co-ordination and silver roof rails, while on SE Edition both S40 and V50 gain a high-performance audio system, rear park assist, leather upholstery, Bluetooth, LED daytime running lights and a chrome bootlid handle. In SE Lux Edition, both models come with an integrated satellite navigation system, as well as all the features introduced
on the SE Edition spec. Finally, R-DESIGN Edition versions gain the audio upgrade, rear park assist, Bluetooth telephony and LED daytime running lights. The majority of models have seen price reductions, reducing the price differential from ES to SE Edition from £1,815 to £1,500, as well as the inclusion of leather upholstery as standard. The gap from SE to SE Lux Edition falls by £170 to £1,000, while the premium for R-DESIGN Edition spec remains at £2,000 but now includes extra equipment worth more than £1,000.
LEADING THE RACE TO CUT EMISSIONS
INDEPENDENT RESEARCH SHOWS VOLVO IS THE MOST IMPROVED MANUFACTURER IN CUTTING CO2 EMISSIONS Independent research from automotive analysts JATO has revealed that Volvo is the most improved manufacturer in terms of reducing CO2 emissions. JATO’s ‘A review of CO2 car emissions across Europe 2010’ shows Volvo is the most improved manufacturer in the top 20 list, with average fleet emissions of 157.5g/km. This represents a significant 13.8%
reduction over the course of a single year. Much of that success can be attributed to Volvo’s DRIVe range of vehicles – so badged because they are the most efficient models in each model line-up. DRIVe variants are now available across nine models, with seven of them emitting less than 120g/km to qualify for the lowest 13% diesel benefit-in-kind tax banding for the 2011/12 financial year.
However, away from diesel engine technology, Volvo is continuing to invest in both alternative fuels (the V60 Plug-in Hybrid is going to be announced – see pages 4-5) as well as conventional petrol engines such as the new family of GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) units, which offer improved fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions while not sacrificing power outputs or driver enjoyment.
DESIRABILITY AND ECONOMY COMBINED Research conducted by Volvo among more than 250 fleet operators has revealed that company car drivers still place a car’s looks and equipment very highly. While the level of benefit-in-kind taxation they have to pay remains the number one priority when choosing their next company car, those questioned said the level of luxury offered in a vehicle was the second most important factor. The fact that drivers don’t want to compromise on specification, comfort and drive-ability when choosing a green model has long been recognised by Volvo, which is why the majority of its DRIVe low-emission models are available in all specification levels, from the value-led ES through the luxury SE and SE Lux Edition versions to the sporty R-DESIGN Editions. Selwyn Cooper, Volvo Car UK’s national corporate operations manager, said: “How the car looks and a long list of toys is what many drivers want, which is why the
R-DESIGN sports trim level was planned in the DRIVe range from the outset. “The car provides the right level of visual impact when parked on your driveway or in the office car park and has a high level of equipment, as well as offering low benefitin-kind tax bills through low emissions.” Volvo research also saw 7% of fleets admitting to plans for incentivising employees into more efficient cars, but Cooper believes the right car choice list should mean companies won’t have to adopt this strategy.
“High-spec, sporty-looking, low-emission models are increasingly becoming more readily available which, if made available across the company car choice list, shouldn’t force organisations to incentivise drivers,” added Cooper. “Companies should automatically see an improved take-up without having to finance the change, as well as benefiting from a lower corporate carbon footprint,” he said. A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE A NEW REPORT HAS HIGHLIGHTED THE HUGE STRIDES VOLVO IS MAKING IN ITS JOURNEY TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Volvo has set itself stringent targets in the area of sustainable development and the work being undertaken has been highlighted in a new report. The 2010/11 Corporate Report with Sustainability reveals how the company is progressing in its aims across three distinct areas, all of which, when combined, aim to make Volvo’s operations across all its business and countries sustainable. ECOLOGICAL SUSTAINABILITY Minimising the impact on the environment is a core belief at Volvo and it is taking action in a number of areas to reduce emissions and promote sustainable vehicles and manufacturing processes. As part of this, Volvo is announcing the launch of the pioneering V60 Plug-in Hybrid at Frankfurt – the world’s first plug-in hybrid to feature a diesel engine. Charged via an ordinary wall socket, the
V60 Plug-in hybrid offers CO2 emissions of just 49g/km, with corresponding average fuel economy of 149mpg. Across the rest of the range, Volvo has reduced CO2 emissions to a 157g/km fleet average in the EU, helped by the fuel-saving DRIVe technology fitted to the majority of vehicles. This makes Volvo the leading car brand in CO2 reduction over the past two years, with a 13.8% improvement. Elsewhere, Volvo has initiated the One Tonne Life project to show how an electric vehicle can be part of a sustainable lifestyle for an ordinary family. Finally, Volvo has maintained its position as world leader in emissions to air production facilities. This has resulted in a 57% reduction in energy consumption over the past five years, with all of its European plants now using climate neutral electricity, mainly sourced from hydropower.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Just as important as ecological sustainability is social responsibility, with a particular focus on safety and employees. On the safety front, the pioneering Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake technology is available as an option on the all-new S60 and V60 models and its availability is being progressively rolled out into more ranges. This system detects a pedestrian who walks out in front of the car and warns the driver. If the driver does not react to the message, the vehicle automatically activates full braking power to avoid a collision. Elsewhere, the percentage of crash tests in which Volvo models receive the highest ranking is now 88%, an 8% improvement against 2009. Within Volvo Car Corporation, employee satisfaction rose to an all-time high of 84% in 2010, according to a list of
attractive employers drawn up by employer branding company Universum, while the number of women in leading positions increased from 18.7% in 2009 to 19.6% in 2010. Volvo has set a target of having women in a quarter of leading positions. Volvo is also to recruit an additional 1,200 employees to meet its growth plans, particularly in the area of sustainable mobility through a strategy of electrification of its vehicles.
ECONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY In order for Volvo to meet its social and ecological ambitions, it must have a solid economic backdrop to enable it to fund developments in both its vehicles and its employees and processes. During 2010, global sales of Volvo cars rose 11.6% to 373,525 cars, driven by continuing demand for the fuel-saving DRIVe models and strong sales of the XC60 SUV. Over the next five years, Volvo Car
Corporation will invest $10 billion in an aggressive new launch plan as it aims to grow global annual sales volumes to 800,000 cars per annum by 2020. It will also establish China as its second home market, with the aim of selling 200,000 cars there by 2015, supported by a new factory, head office and strengthened dealer network in the country. This plan is aimed at meeting the growing demand for luxury products in emerging markets in the East.
Due to go on sale in 2012, the V60 Plug-in Hybrid allows the driver to choose between three different driving modes simply by pressing a button on the instrument panel. In Pure mode, the car runs solely on its electric motor as much as possible, giving a driving range of up to 32 miles. The default Hybrid mode sees the five-cylinder 215hp 2.4-litre turbodiesel engine and 70hp electric motor working in tandem to balance the needs of performance and economy. As a result, CO2 emissions are 49g/km, which equates to average fuel economy of 149mpg. Using both motors in tandem gives the V60 Plug-in Hybrid a range of up to 746 miles. In Power mode, the hybrid technology is optimised to give the best possible performance. The diesel engine and electric motor combined give a total power output of 285hp and maximum torque of 640Nm.

The all-new V60 brings another dimension to Volvo’s line-up in the key corporate midsized executive market. Following on from the international press acclaim given to its sister car, the S60, the V60 builds on this with added practicality, thanks to its estate body style. Surprisingly, given its sleek lines, the V60 offers up to 1,241 litres of luggage space, giving families more versatility. But while there is extra space inside, the V60 still delivers from the driver’s seat with composed handling, a comfortable ride and a general aura of quality in the cabin. The fit and finish of the materials used is first-rate, with soft leather mixing easily with high-quality plastics and stylish metal-effect trim on the trademark floating centre console. The V60 is the most overtly sporting car Volvo has ever built, and this is demonstrated in the turbocharged T4 petrol
model on test. With 180hp and 240Nm of torque available from just 1,600rpm, this engine is punchy yet refined, delivering smooth power throughout the rev range. The only surprising thing about it is its diminutive 1.6-litre engine – it really does feel like a much larger-capacity unit. This is thanks to Volvo’s clever GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) engine, which combines a responsive turbocharger with direct fuel injection to make the combustion process lean and fast. This makes its presence felt on the road, with a healthy surge of power from low down in the rev range in every gear, allowing you to make smooth progress through the gears. Combined with a quickshifting six-speed manual gearbox, the V60 T4 is a sprightly model which delivers on acceleration yet remains a relaxed motorway cruising car. And despite the healthy 180hp on tap, the
T4’s GTDi technology results in impressive economy – 42.2mpg on the EU combined cycle is a strong performance from a 180hp car in this category. In fact, the T4 engine returns identical fuel economy and CO2 emission levels as the T3 model, despite offering an additional 30hp. This figure corresponds to CO2 emissions of 155g/km, coming in below the 160g/km threshold for writing-down allowances. It also means competitive company car tax levels, falling into the 21% benefit-in-kind bracket. And, because it is a petrol unit, it isn’t subject to the 3% surcharge levied on diesel-engined vehicles. This results in monthly benefit-in-kind tax bills of £94 a month for a base-rate taxpayer and £189 a month for a 40% rate payer. With competitive economy and emissions, the V60 T4 puts up a strong case against diesel-engined vehicles that have dominated the corporate market for so many years.

PETROL VS DIESEL For many years the accepted logic in the fleet market has been that diesel is the best choice for both companies and drivers, thanks to the fuel’s inherent frugality. But recent advances in petrol engine technology mean the gap between petrol and diesel is narrowing. This means that drivers and fleet managers need to think twice before automatically opting for a diesel-engined model. Volvo offers a new family of highly efficient GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) petrol engines, which not only return impressive fuel economy figures but which are also not subject to the 3% benefit-in-kind tax surcharge which is applied to diesel models for company car tax. economy means that selecting the right fuel for drivers is critical – while for higher-mileage drivers diesel is nearly always the better bet, for drivers covering lower mileages it may be more cost-effective to offer them the choice of a petrol engine. An example of this is the new GTDi petrol engine fitted with Start/Stop technology in the all-new V60. The T3 unit delivers 150hp and returns 42.2mpg on the EU combined cycle, resulting in a fuel spend over 60,000 miles of £8,604, while a corresponding D3 diesel with 163hp returns 55.4mpg for a fuel spend of £6,846 over the same period. However, the T3 model is cheaper at the front end. The T3 model also runs its diesel stablemate close in taxation terms. A V60
T3 150 Start/Stop SE has a P11D price of £25,590 and CO2 emissions of 155g/km, putting it in the 21% benefit-inkind tax banding. This means a monthly benefit-in-kind tax bill of £94 for a base-rate taxpayer (£189 a month for a 40% payer) and employer Class 1A National Insurance Contributions of £741 per annum. The diesel V60 D3 163 Start/Stop SE has a P11D price of £27,715 and CO2 emissions of 132g/km for a 19% benefit-in-kind tax banding. This results in monthly company car tax payments of £87/£175. With diesel models costing more to buy, and diesel costing more at the pumps, the driver of a diesel would have to cover 70,000 miles to break even on the extra cost compared to a petrol model.
The arrival of DRIVe versions of the new S60 and V60 models means that Volvo can now offer fleets seven vehicles which fall below the key 120g/km CO2 emissions threshold. In line with Volvo’s thinking that choosing a low-emission vehicle should not mean compromising on style, driving dynamics and safety, the new DRIVe S60 and V60 models come with all the attributes which have made the ranges such a success since their launch last year. This includes the availability of R-DESIGN trim on both versions, allowing drivers to blend sporty styling inside and out with a highly efficient engine. And now, thanks to Volvo’s continued focus on lowering emissions and drivers’ tax bills, the S60 and V60 DRIVe both emit less than 120g/km, qualifying them for the lowest diesel benefit-in-kind tax rating of 13% for the 2011/12 tax year. This key threshold is vital because vehicles emitting 121g/ km fall back into the 18% diesel benefit-in-kind tax banding, increasing drivers’ tax bills. DRIVe models also qualify for a £0 rating for the first-year road tax and will subsequently cost only £30 per annum for VED. The S60 DRIVe model is powered by a 1.6-litre turbodiesel engine which returns 65.7mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 114g/km. The V60 DRIVe uses the same engine to record 62.8mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 119g/km. Power is transmitted via a six-speed manual gearbox and there is also a start/stop system which cuts the engine when the vehicle is stationary and in neutral, automatically re-starting it in a split second once the clutch is re-engaged. Other fuel-saving technologies include Brake Energy Regeneration, low rolling resistance tyres and optimised fuel injection systems. The two new additions bring Volvo’s sub-120g/km DRIVe line-up to seven vehicles (as well as two further DRIVe variants in the XC60 and XC70 ranges, with CO2 emissions below the 150g/km level), with a low-emission model to suit all needs and budgets.
C30 DRIVe The C30 DRIVe blends coupé styling with a frugal 1.6-litre turbodiesel engine allied to a start/stop system which returns 74.3mpg on the EU combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 99g/km. These impressive figures mean that a company car driver will pay benefit-inkind tax based on the lowest possible diesel rating of 13% for both this tax year and for 2012/13, ensuring tax stability. And as an added bonus the C30 DRIVe’s sub-100g/km emissions mean it is exempt from the London Congestion Charge, as well as being £0-rated for both the first-year road tax and annual VED, while companies benefit from the 100% writing-down allowance.

As well as the clever fuel-saving technology, such as automatic Start/Stop, Volvo has also fitted low rolling resistance tyres and a slick six-speed manual gearbox with optimised ratios to ensure impressive fuel economy figures. Low CO2 range Volvo is committed to continually improving its offering to fleet customers, and the latest D5 diesel engine offered in the S60, V60, V70, S80 and XC60 brings lower emissions without compromising on performance. The 2.4-litre five-cylinder engine in the popular XC60 model has seen a massive reduction in emissions levels, with CO2 now at 149g/km (down from 179). This means a drop of six benefit-in-kind tax bands from 28 to 22% and results in lower tax bills for drivers, as well as reduced National Insurance Contributions. A base-rate taxpayer will save approximately £40 a month in BIK thanks to the reduction, while Class 1A NICs drop to £913 per annum – impressive figures when you consider that the D5 engine delivers 215hp and a solid 420Nm of torque.
The same powerful D5 engine also delivers strong performance with surprisingly low emission levels in the S60, V60, V70 and S80 executive models. In the S60, the D5 unit offers the same 215hp, yet returns EU combined cycle economy of 60.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 124g/km, making it exempt from the first-year road tax. In the V60 sister car, the figures are 57.6mpg and 129g/km of CO2. And in the larger V70 estate, the D5 delivers 55.4mpg and 134g/km of CO2, while the S80 saloon offers 57.7mpg and emissions of 129g/km. C30 With sporty styling and a range of highly efficient engines, the C30 Sports Coupe offers drivers the best of both worlds – fuel economy to rival a supermini and low benefit-in-kind tax levels starting at just £38 a month. And for companies there is the added attraction of low National Insurance Contributions and, with the DRIVe versions emitting less than 100g/km of CO2, qualification for the 100% writingdown allowance.

Free satellite navigation updates All new Volvo cars with factory-fit RTI satellite navigation can now benefit from two free map upgrades
Volvo is taking further action to keep your drivers on time, less stressed and driving in a more fuel-efficient manner. Any new Volvo ordered with the factory-fit RTI satellite navigation system now receives two fresh map updates at no extra cost, thanks to Volvo MapCare. This means that drivers will benefit from having the most up-to-date maps on their satellite navigation system, to cover updates to the systems such as new roads and new locations of petrol stations, places of interest, hotels, cash-points and WiFi hotspots.
Upgrading the system’s maps enables the RTI system to keep operating at maximum efficiency. Figures from the Navteq Navigation Benefits Study of 2009 show that drivers using more efficient routes can reduce total cost of ownership by £400 per year, thanks to lower fuel use. The map upgrades are available on any of the following vehicles fitted with the factoryfit RTI satellite navigation system: • C30 • S40 • V50 • C70 • V70 • XC70 • S80 • XC60 • XC90
