01.BIO-INSPIRED ARCHITECTURE TICKET HUB

-Project Type: Urban Service Facility -Location: : Prudential Plaza, Chicago, IL, United States -Year: Fall 2019 (UIUC) -Media: Rhino, Grasshopper, Enscape, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Ilustrator -Team Members: Andres Cueva-Robles, Francisco Hernandez, Yadi Xie -The job invloved: Concept Design, Ilumminance Analysis (Ladybug), Rendering Photograph, Physical Model (3D Printing) Design Intention: The primary goal of the project is to interpret biology as design motive through careful investigation and interpretation of selected biology. Through the analysis of the site’s amenities, we saw potential in connecting to the pedway system. The goal is to have the plaza’s development act as a catalyst that would encourage similar systems to spread throughout the pedway systems in Chicago.

Denticles Texture

Dermal Denticles They are as hard aas granite and strong as steel. They can be found all throughtout the shark’s skin. They serve two purposes: protect the skin from predators and tiny parasites + provide a decrease in drag and turbulence. Dermal Denticles & Fluid Dynamics Dermal denticles are set up in a overlapping diamond shape. Because of the shape of the denticles + arrangement, it pulls and fornms grooves and channels. By doing this, it then pushes the water across its body.

One of the problems of urbanization and development of cities is the lack of green space, density problems, overpopulation, and the poor development of open space. A plaza was integrated into the city as a way to improve the psychological safety and deterioration of the physical environment; however, Prudential Plaza does not fulfil the criteria. In an effort to solve the environmental problems and improve the plaza’s current spatial conditions, the site was carefully analyzed to understand which biomimetic system would tackle the problems efficiently. The site currently experiences an immense amount of downdraft, huge fluctuations in temperature, and low amounts of direct sunlight throughout the year.

Sunlight Analysis

Wind Analysis

Exploded View

Lighting Stratergy Baesd on the sunlight analysis, we know the area can not get the sunlight and use the reflection panels to reflect sunlight to trageted area to ensure it get indirect sunlight in a timw through the year. We test it from Janauray to December. The lighting is caculated through whole daytime.

North Elevation

Ventilation Stratergy There are two methods to distract the chill wind in winter. The first one is to make rugged surface of wall and direct the wind away site aree. The second one is interpret termit mound mechanism into the building shape to imrprove the natrueal ventilation of building.

In terms of architectural design, we also used the triangular structure to meet the requirements of stability and ventilation. We set the minimum living unit size of 16 people as 12m x 12m. The overall combination includes one unit for one 16 people family (12m x 12m), two units for two 16 people families (12m x 12m x 2) and three units for one big family/ multifamily with 54 people (12m x 12m x 3).

Single Unit

Fish ponds and planting spaces will be intergrted with each unit. The material of the house are mainly recycled plastic, and wood, which comes from the sea trash and local material. Double Units
