2010 SEASON OUTLOOK The 2009 George Washington women’s tennis team has created a new culture and is approaching this year with a new attitude, a new discipline and a new sense of team. The Colonials set strong performance goals each year, but accomplishing these goals this season will depend on three key ingredients: player development, team cohesiveness, and hard work. With five new players and six experienced returnees, the Colonials are looking forward to an exciting season. This season’s captains, senior Michele Style and sophomore Jacqueline Corba, will bring complementary styles of leadership to the Colonials. Style, with her strong doubles play, will provide guidance built upon her four years in the GW program. Corba will bring her fierce competitiveness to this leading duo and will vie for playing time in the top singles spot. Two-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection Nadia Demidenko returns for her junior season after splitting time at the top two positions last spring with Corba. Demidenko will continue to work for time at the top positions in both singles and doubles for GW. Fellow junior Jennifer Hirsh will add depth to the singles lineup. Sophomores Meg Tyner, Zoe Krohn and transfer Sasha Gluck will all contribute to this season’s lineups. Tyner is ready to compete after sitting out the fall 2009 season with a torn ligament in her wrist. Krohn and Gluck, a University of Wisconsin transfer, are looking to add significant depth to doubles lineup as well as contribute to the singles lineup. All four freshmen, Mimi Hamling, Dorota Lysienia, Hilary Kustoff and Sarah Smith, bring a renewed spirit to compete at the top level of college tennis. Hamling and Lysienia made appearances in the singles and doubles draw of the fall ITA Regional Tournament, both bringing their own style of play to help the new positive, hard-working culture of the team. Kustoff and Smith will also both compete for playing time in the singles and doubles lineups for the Colonials. The Colonials open the season hosting No. 51 Long Beach State and will take on area teams Howard, UMBC, George Mason and Maryland this season. GW will have home court advantage over four Atlantic 10 teams, Richmond, St. Bonaventure, Saint Joseph’s and Temple, while visiting only Duquesne early in the season. The 2010 Atlantic 10 Women’s Tennis Championship will be hosted by Saint Louis University at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis, Mo., April 23-15. Nadia Demidenko

Dawn Buth is in her fourth year as head coach of The George Washington University women’s tennis program. In the 2009 season, Buth coached Nadia Demidenko and Jacqueline Corba to first and second team Atlantic 10 Conference honors, posting a 7-10 team record. The Colonials had big victories over area rivals Howard and Georgetown and Towson. GW fell in the first round of the Alantic 10 Championship to Saint Louis, but bounced back to beat Saint Joseph’s in the second round and tie with Dayton for ninth place. Prior to GW, Buth served as an assistant coach at the University of Pennsylvania during the 2003-04 season. She helped guide the Quakers to a 15-5 overall record and a 5-2 mark in the Ivy League in 2004. Penn battled four nationally ranked opponents in dual matches, defeating No. 51 Maryland and No. 31 Virginia Commonwealth en route to a No. 28 ranking in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) polls in March 2004. The Wichita, KS, native also worked as an assistant tennis professional at the Gainesville (FL) Country Club from 2002-03 and played professionally on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) circuit from 1998-2001. As a singles player Buth was ranked as high as 96th in the world, while reaching 108th in doubles during her three years on tour. She earned 12 International Tennis Federation (ITF) doubles titles, two singles championships and played in the main draw of every Grand Slam tournament. A 2002 graduate of the University of Florida, Buth was a seven-time All-America selection and a key member of the Gators’ 1996 and ‘98 NCAA Championship teams. Buth, who won the NCAA doubles title in 1996 and ‘97, also was named the NCAA Rookie of the Year in 1995 and was nominated for the prestigious Honda-Broderick Award in 1996. Buth resides in Washington, DC.

The George Washington University women’s (men's) tennis team splits its home matches at the Montclair Country Club located in Montclair, VA, and at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex on the GW-Mount Vernon Campus, located at 2100 Foxhall Road, NW. The Complex underwent minor renovations which were completed in the Spring of 2009 that included new coaches offices, a coaches lounge, as well as a new weight room for student-athletes.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT Established in 1983, the Academic Support Services Program was initially designed to provide support services to a small group of students. The program has been expanded and includes services for all of GW’s student-athletes, with an emphasis on individual responsibility and pride in academic accomplishments. The Department of Athletics employs five full-time staff members and 30-40 tutors to assist the 400-plus student-athletes. The Academic Support Program works with student-athletes to help them develop career interests, explore employment opportunities and become familiar with the GW Career and Cooperative Education Center.

MICHELE STYLE

SPORTS MEDICINE Student-athletes receive medical treatment from an experienced staff of certified athletic trainers as well as a staff of student athletic trainers who provide on-site medical care before, during and after all practices and games. GW’s primary team physician, along with a dentist and an eyecare specialist, also are available throughout the year. The training room is fully equipped with the modern apparatuses required for treatment and rehabilitation of all types of sports-related injuries. Espousing a philosophy based on preventive medicine, the training room works with student-athletes to keep them in playing shape, return them to competition and maintain their level of conditioning throughout the year.
