2010 SEASON OUTLOOK
2009 RESULTS (6-21, 0-6 CWPA)
The 2010 season ushers in not only a new decade for the George Washington women’s water polo team, but a new venue as well. Renovations to Charles E. Smith Center Pool were completed in time for the men’s fall season and now the Colonials’ women’s team gets its turn in the enhanced facility. The venue features improved lighting and ventilation, new chairback seating and team locker room — all enhancing the experience for players and fans. Head coach Scott Reed is confident this year’s team is experienced and talented enough to return the program back to where it finished its inaugural season a decade ago — battling for the CWPA Southern Division title and competing in the Eastern Championship. “We have a lot of experience, the goal is to use that and apply it to have a successful season.” With eight upperclassmen returning and five underclassmen adding depth at every position, Reed is aiming for a team-oriented approach this spring. “We’re hoping to spread our scoring around, with a pair of all-conference players in sophomore Allison Peotter and senior Marissa Stamler leading the attack. We’re also looking to be one of the best defensive teams in the conference.” Peotter and Stamler accounted for nearly half of GW’s goals and points in 2009. Peotter became the first GW freshman to earn First Team All-South honors after pacing the team in goals (49), points (84), steals (75) and swimoffs won (70) last season. Even after a standout rookie year in which she also set the program’s single-season mark with 35 assists, Peotter is embracing a setup role to make the Colonials’ attack more well-rounded in 2010. Stamler was named to the All-South Second Team for the second consecutive season, totaling 42 goals and 27 assists as a junior. Adding to the attack are senior Bernadette Karandy, junior Erin Delker and freshman Jessie Hurd. Karandy and Delker combined for 13 goals and 23 assists last season and are expected to spark the counterattack with their speed. Hurd, a native of The Woodlands, TX, is an intelligent, poised rookie expected to contribute immediately. Senior Emily Chereson, junior Melissa Sesana and sophomore Megan Walker will form a three-player rotation at center. Chereson thrives on creating man-advantage opportunities and already ranks second all-time at GW with 113 ejections drawn. Walker enjoyed a solid rookie campaign, ranking second behind Chereson with 34 ejections drawn and third on the team with 27 goals. Defensively, the Colonials will rely on seniors Tara Sullivan and Sarah Fitch at utility and junior Charlotte Schou in goal. Sullivan provided a boost in the attack with 16 goals and 26 assists, third-highest on the team behind Peotter and Stamler, while Fitch ranked third on the team with 38 steals last season. In her first season as starting goalkeeper last spring, Schou finished with 286 blocks, just five shy of the single-season school mark. Much improved sophomore Antonia Raris, who totaled 27 saves in eight quarters of action last spring, and freshman Rebecca Kipnis, will back up Schou in net.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT
Scott Reed is in his 11th year as head coach of the water polo programs at GW. He has led the Colonials women’s program to 119 victories, including six Eastern Championships appearances, since its inception in 2000. In 2007, Reed was named CWPA Southern Division Men’s Coach of the Year for guiding GW to third place at the Eastern Championship and an end-of-season No. 17 national ranking. In 11 seasons, Reed has led the GW men’s team to 104 victories and three Eastern Championships appearances. He is the first and only head coach of the women’s water polo team, which in 2003 won a program-record 18 games to earn Reed CWPA Southern Division Coach of the Year honors. Reed came to GW from Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA, where he served as the head water polo coach and as an assistant coach with the university’s men’s and women’s swimming teams. Reed graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1994 with a bachelor of science degree in sport management. At Massachusetts, he served as a captain on the nationally ranked Minutemen’s water polo squad and also competed on the swim team. He still owns the Massachusetts school record in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:30.65. In addition, Reed served as a graduate assistant in aquatics at Eastern Kentucky University, where he received a master of science degree in sport administration in 1997. He also is a member of the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) board of directors and won the CWPA’s Southern Division Coach of the Year award in 2002-03. Reed lives in Fairfax, VA, with his wife, Allison.
Established in 1983, the Academic Support Services Program was initially designed to provide support services to a small group of students. The program has been expanded and includes services for all of GW’s studentathletes, with an emphasis on individual responsibility and pride in academic accomplishments. The Department of Athletics employs five full-time staff members and 30 to 40 tutors who assist the 400-plus student-athletes. The Academic Support Program works with student-athletes to help them develop career interests, explore employment opportunities and become familiar with the GW Career and Cooperative Education Center.
ANDRIJA VASILJEVIC / ASSISTANT COACH Two-time All-American Andrija Vasiljevic is in his first year as assistant coach with the GW women’s water polo program. A 2007 graduate of California, Berkeley, Vasiljevic scored 144 goals during his four seasons with the Golden Bears from 2003-06. He helped Cal to back-to-back NCAA national championships as a player in 2006 and graduate assistant coach in 2007. Vasiljevic earned Third Team All-America honors from the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches as a senior in 2006 and honorable mention accolades as a sophomore in 2004. A native of Belgrade, Serbia, Vasiljevic was also twice named an Academic All-American by the ACWPC and earned a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis on the European Union and Eastern Europe from Cal.

SPORTS MEDICINE Student-athletes receive medical treatment from an experienced staff of certified athletic trainers as well as a staff of student athletic trainers who provide on-site medical care before, during and after all practices and games. GW’s primary team physician, along with a dentist and an eye care specialist, are also available throughout the year. The training room is fully equipped with the modern apparatuses required for treatment and rehabilitation of all types of sports-related injuries. Espousing a philosophy based on preventive medicine, the training room works with student-athletes to keep them in playing shape, return them to competition and maintain their level of conditioning throughout the year.
