MENTAL TOUGHNESS Mental toughness is the ability to hold on to your goals in the face of the pressure and stress of current reality. – Vince Lombardi, Jr.
Mental toughness is just as necessary as physical preparation and absolutely necessary to overcome business obstacles, be they short or long-term. The Cleaning and Restoration industry can be one of rapid change, frenetic activity, and constant demands on time, energy, and resources resulting in the franchise Owner having to ‘wear many hats’ and manage what seems to be never ending urgencies and crisis. The latter involving business finances, personnel, and asset management. One result of urgencies, real or perceived, is the focus on planning and overall business management can be diminished or delayed. Without planning and preparation what generally happens when the next crisis happens? Typically, we become reactive rather than proactive. For example, a business loses a key administrative, marketing, or production employee with little or no
warning. This loss can hamper and even cripple the business until a replacement can be found and hired. Suppose an unexpected storm hits your area and you are short personnel, working equipment, or vehicles to service the calls. Besides loss of business, unpreparedness and lack of planning can lead to personal anxiety and stress, often causing standard operating and administrative protocols to be overlooked or compromised. Lack of mental toughness and focus from the daily grind or unexpected events, can also restrict strategy and implementation planning for the next Stage of Development leading to business stagnation. Let’s consider another scenario. What if there is no Hurricane Irene, Super Storm continued on page 2

Sandy, or a Polar Vortex over the next few months? Have you prepared for that eventuality? What would happen to your cash flow, growth plans, or personal finances, should this be a nonevent and disappointing winter season? Mental toughness is just as necessary as physical preparation and absolutely necessary to overcome business obstacles, be they short or long-term. Given the nature of business we are in, time is always at a premium. Our admonition to Franchise Owners is to set aside the time, away from constant interruptions for clarity and focus, to plan for contingencies, emergencies, as well as for long-term business development. We trust the majority of Owners made a business investment, rather than purchased a job; therefore, we advise and want you to be working on your business rather than in it, as we often state. It will take resolve and mental toughness to work through the challenges. We feel confident you can acquire the necessary mental toughness to carry you successfully though all calamities, challenges, and crises you encounter. Please remember, your Director-Trainer Team is a resource for you to use whenever needed – we are willing and able to assist you with business consultation.

Hi –
About a month ago I drove by your place in Waldwick and a friend that lives a few blocks away in Allendale said, “I’ve never had to use this Servpro place but I heard good things about them – so keep it in mind if you are ever in need.” I was hoping to never have the need --- but returned home from vacation last week to a water issue with my home office. Although in the end I did not need your company to come in (simply because I later learned that the carpet company that did the office work is responsible for the damage and will be taking care of all matter), I was very impressed with the level of professionalism from those that I dealt with at Servpro. I believe I had about 5-6 phone conversations with Phyllis Roman through the process --- and from the first conversation to the very last she consistently demonstrated concern, patience, knowledge, and professionalism. Honestly, every time I hung up with her I turned to my wife and said, “I am so impressed with how nice and helpful this person is!” Similarly, I would like to commend your young employee named Ryan (I do not know his last name). Ryan came to our house one day to assess the situation and I found him to be knowledgeable, helpful, polite, and professional. I was at the Barclays the other day and saw all the Servpro trucks, etc. --- and told the group that I was with about my quick yet telling experience with your company. I will continue to share those sentiments with others!

Being a Member of Your Local Real Estate Board is a Great Way to Give Back to the Community. Early Thursday morning, September 18, 2014, the Hunterdon/Somerset Board of Realtors and their affiliate partners, through the program Realtor Care Day, gathered an awesome group of volunteers together and assisted a widowed homeowner with landscaping that was beyond her abilities. There was a great amount of work needed. It required a selfless group of volunteers who were up to taking on some strenuous work effort. Everyone picked up a tool and began work as the employees of SERVPRO速 of Northeast Somerset County volunteered their personal time to power wash the house, clean the gutters, and pull so many weeds, plant flowers, and mulch. By the end of the day, this tired house was transformed. Our homeowner did not recognize her own home and the smile on her face was priceless. It was an awesome experience for the employees of SERVPRO速 of Northeast Somerset County to give back to the community!
