What’s new in 2012 2012 Audi A7

2012 Aston Martin Virage Over the past nine decades, Aston Martin has witnessed many changes. In a long and distinguished history, Aston Martin has seen some good times and some not so good times. The V12-powered luxury sports GT of the British luxury brand has been crowned as the ’Classic Car of the Future’. This is the second consecutive year, Aston Martin has been awarded the prize, following last year’s top podium position by the four-door Rapide. “Aston Martin has been recently voted as the coolest brand in the UK again. The fact that as a manufacturer with quintessentially British roots we are also recognised in other markets shows that we have become a globally successful brand”, said Dr. Ulrich Bez, Aston Martin CEO, at the awards ceremony in Stuttgart on Thursday. “Germany is the most competitive sports car market in Europe. We are therefore very encouraged as a British brand to be voted by readers of a German magazine as the victor.”

2012 Jaguar XJL

When automakers begin development on a new model, there are typically three or more competing design proposals, one of which is then chosen to make it into metal. This standard operating procedure was discarded with the Audi A7 Sportback, says Audi boss Rupert Stadler: "Everything was right in the first place." Indeed, this large hatchback could be the most beautiful of all Audis. Long, wide, and low, it’s styled with smooth and supremely clean lines. The front end is better proportioned than the latest A8 's and seems cool and almost stoic—especially with the optional LED headlights. The side view recalls the most handsome (if not the most reliable) of 1970s hatchbacks, such as the Rover SD-1 and Citroën CX; the rear end is cut off sharply, like an Italian supercar of that same era. This car is free of the gimmicks you'll find on many others in this class, and we haven't talked to anyone who doesn't

With its bold, bi-function xenon headlamps outlined with crystal white LED signature running lamps and its muscular bearing the XF makes a statement of formidable intent. It’s flowing lines and primed, nose-down, attitude are more than an athletic pose, they have been precision-honed through exhaustive design testing to perfect the air flow efficiency of the XF. Each line in the XF architecture has been refined to help it achieve optimal aerodynamic performance, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Beautiful, intense, powerful; first the XF captures your imagination and then your heart . To step into the XF is to take your seat in a theater of luxury. The exquisitely crafted interior greets you with form hugging supple leathers, class i c real wood veneers and sleek contemporary aluminum surfaces. Minimal sweeping lines give the cabin an airy modern elegance as every aspect is ergonomically tailored to fit its audience. The XF greets you with an enticing solitary pulsating red ‘start ’ button, ringed in glinting chrome. Engaging the engine instigates the drama - the XF wakes, the performance begins. Even as you lift your finger, the precision rounded aluminum JaguarDrive SelectorTM rises in to the palm of your hand. The engine growls as the XF air vents roll open in unison and cool Phosphor blue lighting ignites to pick out the interior controls. Welcome to the show.

The Aston Martin Virage won in the category ’Sports Cars & Coupés’ well ahead of nine other competitors from Germany and abroad. More than 27,000 readers of the Auto Bild Klassik magazine casted their vote.

2012 Bentley Continental GT THROUGHOUT HISTORY, THERE HAVE BEEN MOMENTS WHEN A BENTLEY HAS ALTERED OUR UNDERSTANDING OF GREAT MOTORING. From the company’s earliest days, our cars set new standards in automotive design and engineering. They were icons of motoring. These cars took the Grand Touring rulebook and rewrote it. The beautiful R-Type Continental in the 1950s and the Continental GT at the start of the 21st century. A revolution in Grand Touring Now, at the start of a new decade, we’ve unveiled our latest masterpiece, the new Continental GT. A stunning coupé that blends classic Bentley DNA with contemporary design and modern technology. The perfect fusion of supercar performance and handcrafted luxury ensures the remarkable, new Continental GT creates a revolution of its own. Welcome to a new chapter in Bentley’s automotive history.

2012 Lamborghini Aventador

2012 Fiat 500 FIAT® has once again embraced and enhanced the landscape of North America, seducing the hearts and minds of American drivers. Every detail of the FIAT 500 and 500 Cabrio has been thoughtfully and beautifully designed for American sensibilities. Its ability to be personalized feeds the thirst for self-expression and celebrates what it means to be an individual in a world of individuals. The 1.4L 16v MultiAir® Engine has electrohydraulic valves for more dynamic and direct control of air and combustion. This improves power by 10% and torque by 15%, cylinder-bycylinder, stroke-by-stroke. It also helps reduce pollutant emissions with an added 10% fuel economy improvement over conventional naturally-aspirated engines. The award-winning 1.4L 16v MultiAir Engine is unique only to the FIAT® 500 delivering 101 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 98 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm with 30 mpg city, 38 mpg hwy(1). Non-technologically speaking, it’s amazing.

According to the company, "Aventador" was the name of a bull that entered into battle on October 1993 at the Saragossa Arena, earning the "Trofeo de la Peña La Madroñera" for its outstanding courage. Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini. "The Aventador is a jump of two generations in terms of design and technology, it’s the result of an entirely new project, but at the same time it’s a direct and consistent continuation of Lamborghini’s brand values. It is extreme in its design and its performance. The supercar is 4.78 meters long, 2.26 meters wide, and only 1.136 meters high. The proportions and body parts have been calculated to improve the car’s aerodynamics as much as possible. All of the aerodynamic elements are integrated into the body shell form. The 4 degree approach angle is optimized for high speed and assists directional stability at the very top end of the spectrum. The 11 degree tilt, on the other hand, delivers considerably greater downforce at mid-range speeds, helping to optimize handling and stability. In what has become one of the most distinctive features for any Lamborghini, the passenger doors will open upwards towards the sky. This feature has been used on every major Lamborghini supercar since the Countach.

olt is unique among electric vehicles because there are two sources of energy: an electric source – a battery – that allows you to drive gasfree for an EPA-estimated 35 miles. And there's also an onboard gas generator that produces electricity so you can go up to to a total of 375 additional miles on a full tank of gas. So if you want to drive using only electricity, you can. If you want to drive using electricity and gas, you can do that too. Volt is first for two very good reasons. If you can drive, you can drive a Volt. Instead of turning a key, you push a blue button. Rather than looking at dials and needles, you check two interactive LCD screens for feedback based on your particular driving style. For example, suppose you want to go from A to B in the most efficient manner possible. Volt is programmed to respond with a choice of three driving modes. Normal mode enables Volt to drive like a conventional car, only more efficiently. Sport mode gives drivers more aggressive feedback and heightened response. Mountain mode maintains a power reserve for climbing long, steep grades

NEW YORK (AP) – Not long ago, I gave a ride to a kid in an old car with no air conditioning. It was a warm day, so I told him to roll down the window. He had no idea what that meant. It got me thinking about all the things today's kids take for granted when it comes to cars that either didn't exist or were far less common when their parents were growing up. WINDOWS AND DOORS You can still find crank handles on old cars and "very, very low-end cars," according to Art Jacobsen, automotive industry veteran and director of business development for CarMD.com, a company that offers handheld products and services to diagnose car problems. Another thing that's increasingly rare: manual locks. Locking each door separately seems like a lot of work compared to one click from the key chain. MUSIC AND GAMES Change the station! Turn it down! Turn it up! I hate that song! These conflicts haven't completely disappeared from car rides, but there are more entertainment options than ever before. "Most cars now have an audio jack where you can plug in an iPod or any other MP3 and play it over the car stereo," said Jacobsen. And if the passengers don't like the driver's taste in music, chances are they have their own iPods with head phones. DVD players and video games have replaced 20 Questions, GHOST, license-plate math and Geography. It all adds up to a huge shift in the way families travel.

GETTING LOST How often did your parents get lost, and then get in an argument with each other about being lost? Now some folks get turn-by-turn directions and traffic updates from their cell phones, some have portable GPS devices, and some spring for a navigational system built right into the dashboard of their vehicle. But Jacobsen notes that navigational technology hasn't entirely eliminated the experience of getting lost. "A lot of times my GPS has taken me around in circles, so you still get to have the heated discussions with your spouse," he said. CAR SEATS Remember bouncing around the back seat when you were a kid or sitting on a grownup's lap? Maybe you rode shotgun in front while mom or dad drove, or even got to bop around the bed of a pickup truck. All that's forbidden now, thanks to rules and recommendations on child safety. All 50 states require the use of car seats for children, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also recommends that children under 13 always sit in back. Not only can front-seat air bags injure small passengers, but back-seat passengers are less likely to be hurt in head-on collisions. LOOKING UNDER THE HOOD Generations of 20th century kids grew up working on the family car with their dads. No more, says Jacobsen. "It's not by accident that manufacturers have designed these computer systems," he said. "You have to bring the car to them to get even simple things done. Everything is computerized and it's very difficult without access to the proper tools and information." On the other hand, says Bennett, "cars are so much more reliable, so much safer, and so much less maintenance is required."

in the open air of the truck bed. However, a dog may chase after an animal on the side of the road, attempting to leap out while the vehicle is in motion. A leashed dog may end up becoming hanged or dragged behind the truck. Always keep pets ride inside the vehicle when traveling.

People love their pets. They dress them up, organize their birthday parties and often bring their cats or dogs along on errands and road trips. But a wellmeaning pet parent could be putting their companion at risk. While many pet owners know not to keep their dog or cat locked in a car with the windows shut even for a short duration of time, there are other "dont's" when pets are taken on the road.

4. Riding with face out the window: All it takes is one small stone or some other debris to end up in a pet's face to blind him or her. Plus, rushing wind can damage a pet's sensitive ear drums. Although many dogs can't resist the temptation of putting their heads out of a car window, it is safer to keep them inside.

1. Riding in the driver's seat: Many pet parents place their pooches on their laps when going for a car ride. Not only is this dangerous, but it could also be illegal, too. A pet in a driver's lap could inadvertently hit the gear shift, distract the driver, end up under the accelerator or brake, or attempt to lunge out of an open window. Any of these scenarios makes driving hazardous.

5. Making dogs jump in and out of the car: As pets get older, they, too can succumb to some of the side effects of old age. Larger dogs may experience arthritis or hip discomfort. It can be uncomfortable to jump in and out of a vehicle, particularly a truck or SUV. Dog ramps are a safer option, and one that keeps a pet's comfort in mind.

2. Driving without a seat belt: Just as people should buckle up, so should pets. The safest manner of travel is to have the pet in a carrier that is secured in the car. Lions and tigers and bears ... oh my! It's probably a safe bet that a driver navigating North America's rural roads will not experience lions and tigers, but bears, deer, livestock, and other animals certainly are a possibility. Individuals who live in rural areas become accustomed to the subtleties of driving rural roads. However, those who are visiting the countryside on vacations or road trips may be less tuned-in to keep an eye for any animals with whom they might be sharing the road. According to research, there are twice as many accidents on rural roads as there are in urban areas. To be safe, keep these tips in mind: • Expect blind curves. In many cases, rural roads are built to be of minimal disturbance to the surrounding landscape. This could mean that roads bend and dip every which way. Pay attention to posted speed limits -they're very accurate for the road conditions. • Be on animal watch. In suburban and urban areas, the focus of driving leans toward watching for other drivers and pedestrians. However, in rural areas, focus should be placed on watching out for animals. Certain times of the day, such as dawn and dusk, tend to be prime times for animals to be on the move, whether finding a new place to bed down or scout for food. A deer can total a car if hit, and even lowflying birds can cause damage. When passing farms, be on the lookout for livestock crossing the road and farm-

ers driving equipment, such as tractors. Around lakes, one may come across geese or ducks. • The road may not be paved. Some drivers take paved roads for granted. In rural areas, the roads may be made of gravel or dirt. This calls for slower driving speeds to maintain traction and safety. • Expect minimal lighting. Driving at night in rural areas can be nerve-wracking for the inexperienced. Street lights are rare and may only appear at particularly dangerous curves or intersections. It will likely be necessary to use high beams while driving to maintain proper visibility. Extra caution to avoid animals should be exercised at night. • Keep a map in the car. GPS systems have become the standard for most drivers -- many of which rely on them solely for navigation. However, in rural areas, mountains or trees may obscure the satellite signal that powers these systems. It's easy to become lost when the GPSfails. Having a paper map on hand can give drivers peace of mind. Also, that same impaired satellite service could affect mobile phone signals. This makes knowing where a driver is going even more important. • Be careful of soft and unmarked shoulders. Rural roads may be built on the side of mountains or ravines. Mr. Matsuda, along with a small group of investors took over a company named Abemaki Tree Cork Company, renaming it Toyo Cork Kogyo, Ltd. to grow out of cork production and into industrial production. In 1927, Mr. Matsuda reformed the company naming it Toyo Kogyo Kaisha. Come 1929, the company made machine tools, and their first motor vehicle. By 1931 these same tri-cycle trucks were being exported to China. It was called the “Mazda-Go-a.” The first “Mazda’s”, if you will, were out and about in the world. In 1934, Toyo Kogyo changed its name to Mazda,

When these grooves wear out, its time to bring the car in and have the rotor replaced. It's that simple. You can easily see the rotor wear for yourself without having to lift the car or remove the wheels. The wear indicators do not hurt the rotor's performance in any way. In fact, they actually make it work better, which enhances the performance of your brake system. These wear grooves also serve to dissipate heat and gases, which helps to reduce brake fade and extends the life of your pads. Is premium gas worth the extra expense? Filling up at the gas station is an expensive way to spend a few minutes. As the cost of gasoline continues to fluctuate, drivers want to get the most bang for their buck at the pump. Understanding octane and which one is appropriate for certain cars can save drivers substantial amounts of money. When vacillating between whether to choose premium or regular, it pays to read your owner's manual and it can't hurt to learn a little about the chemistry of gasoline. Gasoline is the fuel for your car. It is available in 87 octane (regular), 89 octane (plus) and 91 octane (premium) in most areas. Regardless of fuel grade, the three major octane levels at the pump offer the same amount of heat energy, say automotive experts. What determines the differences in gas is the propensity for the gasoline to cause a ping or knock. This occurs when an uncontrolled burn or an explosion of the fuel takes place in the engine. Typically, this happens when part of the fuel-air mixture in one or more of the car's cylinders ignites spontaneously due to compression. Higher performance cars require more engine compression to generate more horsepower. Therefore, putting regular gasoline in these types of vehicles may exacerbate knocking and pinging issues. Premium, high-octane fuel is specially designed to burn more slowly than regular, reducing the chances for those small explosions in the engine. Some people are under the impression that premium fuel

Drivers might be able to skip premium at the pump if their vehicle's engine doesn't require it.

offers other benefits, such as it contains more detergents to help clean the engine during use. This is inaccurate, and the U.S. government requires a certain level of detergent in all grades of gasoline. Despite these untruths, some people are insistent upon paying $.20 to $.30 more a gallon to fuel up with a higher grade of gas. Typically the higher the price of the car, the greater propensity it will "require" premium gas. Automakers use premium fuel to distinguish their higher-market models. For example, most Toyota models can run on regular, while the Lexus line suggests premium. The same can be said for Honda/Acura models. Premium gasoline garners a higher profit margin for gasoline retailers and refiners, so there is a definite advantage for them working in cahoots with automakers to push premium gas. While premium gas may reduce some knock and ping in high-performance engines when they are pushed, in most cases vehicle owners will be hard-pressed to tell the difference in performance when filling up with regular or premium. According to fuel specialists at General Motors, the only modern engines that should really need premium are those with superchargers, which force-feed fuel into the cylinders. In fact, drivers of cars that require regular who routinely fill up with premium gas could be doing their engine a disservice. The higher density of premium gasolines could lead to a buildup of waste products inside the engine over time. The Federal Trade Commission has even issued a consumer notice in the past, stating: "In most cases, using a higher-octane gasoline than your owner's manual recommends offers absolutely no benefit. It won't make your car perform better, go faster, get better mileage, or run cleaner." The bottom line: Vehicle owners should read the car manual that comes with the auto. Stick to the recommended octane level, and the car should perform as indicated. If a car requires premium fuel, experiment with mid-grade to see if knocking occurs or if there is any apparent decrease in performance. If not, enjoy the extra savings at the pump.

Do’s and dont’s of shopping for a car To the negotiating masters of the world, a trip to a car dealership is something that may be anticipated or even enjoyed. On the flip side, many others loathe the thought of haggling over price and trying to weed through the fine print of a financing deal. Whether you're a negotiating novice or a dealing dynamo, there are certain dos and don'ts that should be heeded when sitting down to discuss your next car purchase at the dealership. Keeping these tactics in mind can save you money and perhaps a few headaches along the way. Do keep some of your negotiating cards hidden. It's unwise to walk into the dealership and immediately let the salesperson know your life story, including the exact amount you have to spend. You should be talking about the options and features you desire in the vehicle first and then let the salesperson bring up the topic of price. Mentioning a number means you take certain things out of the equation, such as how far a salesperson will deal, and perhaps the chances of walking out of the dealership with a car that sold roughly around invoice just because they wanted it off the lot. Don't give a buying deadline. Telling the salesperson that you need a car immediately creates a sense of urgency and desperation. You want to give off an air that you can walk away from a deal at any time and that your purchase is not contingent on time or cost. Experts agree that the biggest bargaining chip you have in the car-buying negotiation is that you may leave the deal and shop somewhere else. Do see the bigger picture in price. Some buyers are so focused on monthly payment that they fail to see the bigger picture. You want to figure out the maximum price you're willing to pay for the vehicle over the long haul. Finance departments are very good at tweaking the math so that your monthly payment magically arises. But that number could be the result of stretching out payments over a longer loan,

Purchasing a car is no small undertaking. According to the National Automobile Dealers Association, the average price of a new car sold in the United States is $28,400. At that cost, a vehicle is one of the more expensive purchases a person will make in his or her lifetime. With this in mind, many drivers want to be sure the vehicle will last for years to come. Purchasing an extended warranty may offer some peace of mind. An extended warranty on a car or truck is similar to insurance bought for a home or vehicle or personal health. There is a chance it will be needed and a chance it won't. It takes over when the warranty issued through the manufacturer on a new car expires. Extended warranties are sold both through the dealership as factory-backed products and through third-party warranty

retailers. The prices and items covered may vary, so it is best to do adequate research on extended warranties, including reading the fine print, before signing on the dotted line. Concerned consumers should put in the same amount of work when researching the extended warranty as they did when choosing the vehicle. Are warranties worth it? Car buyers should keep in mind that not all warranties are the same and some are better deals for the dealership than the consumer. According to Edmunds.com, a Web site tailored to automotive consumers, extended warranties are often a large profit center for the dealership, where salespeople are urged to push warranties. Sometimes these warranties are very expensive, but largely unnecessary.

which will end up costing you much more in interest. Work toward the end price, not the monthly payment when negotiating. Don't be blindsided by your credit rating. Failure to know your credit report and score means you cannot effectively negotiate a deal. If the dealership discovers your rate before you do, the dealer has the upper hand. A poor score means a higher interest rate for buyers in most cases. Some will pass on a buyer with a poor score. It pays to know your score and any blips on your credit report prior to sitting down with a dealership finance manager. Do have an understanding of what you're looking for if you're shopping as a couple. Salespeople often work couples against each other. If the wife seems enthusiastic about one thing but the husband doesn't, the salesperson may play to the wife to sway the husband's decision, and vice versa. This may remove room to negotiate, especially if the couple isn't standing on the same playing field when it comes to the car, price and extras. You want to be viewed as a unified force. Don't talk about trade-ins until later. Let the salesperson come up with a price for the car and then bring up the trade-in afterward. This asserts that one deal is not contingent on the other. Oftentimes selling your old car on your own yields a better price than simply trading it in. That's because dealerships do it as a convenience and know they have a small opportunity to turn a profit on tradeins. Be smart about how you present yourself at a car dealership as well as which information you share with the salesperson.

Credit score can affect cost of auto insurance Drivers hoping to lower the cost of their auto insurance know that there are several tactics they can take to do just that. But many might not know that a better credit score can help reduce costs, as many insurance companies are increasingly turning to credit scores to determine rates and eligibility. For years insurance companies have been looking at credit scores to calculate a payment rate for prospective subscribers and also to determine whether they will offer insurance in the first place. According to a recent survey by Conning & Co., a Connecticut-based insurance research firm, 92 percent of all insurance companies use credit information when underwriting new policies. Individuals who have missed two or more bills or who have a poor score could find they're asked to pay more for car insurance. It used to be that car insurance rates were based on a few factors -- namely the age of the applicant, the make and model of the vehicle, the city or town in which the insurance would be issued (to determine likelihood of theft) and whether the vehicle had an alarm system and if it would be parked in a driveway. Some drivers might wonder what their credit score has to do with their auto insurance premiums. According to statements by the National Association of Independent Insurers, credit score says a lot about a prospective client. Chances are that a person who manages his or her finances responsibly may also be responsible in other aspects of life -- including behind the wheel of a car. To an insurance company, a good credit score translates to good behavior and less risk. Some feel that using credit scores to help determine premiums helps applicants, especially those with strong credit histories. But critics argue that this policy is unfair, especially in today's poor economy. Even the most responsible people could miss a payment or two because of layoffs or

other factors beyond their control. In 2005 in Ontario, Canada, the province prohibited the use of credit scores as a risk classification factor for auto insurance. Automobile insurance is the most regulated insurance product in each province and territory and is the only product in Canada for which the policy forms (including applications) need to be approved by the insurance regulators. Others living in Canada may want to check the legality and procedures in their particular provinces or territories to determine if underwriters are using credit scores as part of the process. With all this information in mind, there may be some people who are looking for ways to improve their credit scores. Here are tips to do just that. * Routinely check your credit report and address any errors. * Reduce the amount of debt owed. That means avoiding large balances on credit cards or having too many outstanding loans. * Pay bills on time. Set up payment reminders if you are forgetful, or take advantage of automatic bill paying. * Don't allow any accounts to go into collections. Even after the bill is paid it can remain on your credit report for up to seven years in the U.S. * Close out inactive credit accounts. Sometimes the more credit cards you have, the worse it looks for you. * Consider that every credit inquiry goes on your credit report. If your credit standing is relatively new, realize that rapid account buildup can look risky if you are a new credit user. Credit scores are just one factor in insurance underwriting, and it also helps to be a responsible driver as well. Accident history, age (teens are considered more risky drivers) and other factors will be used to determine an insurance quote. And as always, it pays to shop around.

Vehicles are built more consistently and reliably than ever before. That means drivers are less likely to encounter the big-ticket repairs that a warranty may cover. Wear and tear during the normal course of driving actually may not be covered by an extended warranty. By the time the vehicle has reached expiration benchmarks for major systems of the car, such as a transmission or engine failing after 100,000 to 200,000 miles, most extended warranties have expired and the car will likely already have been sold. Hidden costs Some warranties are very comprehensive and spell out all that they cover. Others feature hidden costs, such as deductibles, that may still require a car owner to reach into his or her wallet for what's essentially a co-payment for certain repairs. While statistics regarding warranty fraud are hard to find, there is evidence that some warranties do not always deliver what they promise. Some third-party warranty companies are infamous for denying coverage to offset the rock bottom prices on their warranty packages. Shopping around After weighing all of the options, many people still like the sense of security an extended warranty provides. Others

buying a new model without a proven track record prefer a warranty as a precaution. When purchasing a warranty, consumers don't simply have to go with what's offered by the dealership, nor do they have to purchase the warranty the moment they purchase the vehicle. Many experts advise pushing off the decision until the manufacturer warranty is set to expire. This way you already know the vehicle's highs and lows and whether you plan to own the car for the long haul. Warranties often come as factory-backed warranties largely sold through dealerships and those offered by independent companies. Many dealerships prefer factorybacked warranties simply because they have a proven track record and they're familiar with the terms of coverage. However, these factory-backed warranties are often more expensive than those issued through independent companies. Therefore, if price is the only consideration, third-party companies are the way to go. But keep in mind that it could take longer to get a car repaired through an independent warranty company, as each warranty source has its own auditing process that determines whether repairs and coverage are valid. Even if you choose a factory-backed warranty, you are able to shop around through different dealers. That's because there is a high mark-up on warranties. Depending on the dealership, they may be willing to deal. After all, just about everything at a dealership is negotiable. Remember that shopping for a warranty should be viewed as just as important as the car purchase. Don't feel pressured to make decisions right away, and keep in mind that oftentimes there is no need for an extended warranty in the first place.

ROAD RULES

JG-TC

On the road again Do's and Don'ts of road trips Road trips are a tradition enjoyed by people of all shapes and sizes. Cross country trips, adventurous jaunts through Europe and spring break excursions to warmer climes are just a few of the more popular road trips travelers enjoy each and every year. Though road trips leave travelers largely in control of their own getaways, there are ways trips can quickly spiral out of control. Careless planning or unforeseen auto troubles can turn a dream road trip into a nightmare. Before setting on a road trip this season, travelers would be wise to consider the following do's and don'ts of road tripping. DO: Prepare the vehicle. Nothing is more integral to a successful road trip than a vehicle that can withstand the trials and tribulations of the road. No one is happy when a vehicle breaks down during a road trip, but such breakdowns are almost always preventable. Though a flat tire or a car accident can't be predicted, drivers can safeguard themselves against mechanical problems by taking their car to a mechanic a few days before the trip begins. Make sure to do so several days in advance so if the car needs work, the mechanic has ample time to make any repairs. Waiting till the last minute is a bad idea, as there's no guarantee the mechanic can fit the car into his schedule. Also, waiting until the last minute might prove more expensive, as mechanics might be forced to have new parts shipped overnight to ensure the trip can start on time. Such shipping costs will be passed on to the automobile owner.

DO: Get some rest. It's tempting for road trippers to burn the midnight oil, as roads are less crowded late at night and it's easy to make up for any lost time that occurred during the day. This is especially tempting when little kids are along, as parents feel they can truly make up hours while the little ones are asleep. However, drivers must get some rest themselves. Despite being sedentary while behind the wheel of a car, drivers do get tired and it's easy to fall asleep at the wheel when it's dark out and the highway is essentially empty. No matter how much time needs to be made up, drivers must get adequate rest. DON'T: Leave little time to get home. Eventually, the car is going to have to turn around and come home. Don't leave all that driving to one day. Take a different route home and enjoy new sights and stopovers along the way. If the return trip is made with few stops, chances are travelers will be road weary upon returning home, and all that R&R earned on the trip will have been for naught.

Boredom be gone!

DON'T: Be surprised by delays. Expect delays when traveling by car. Rush hour traffic and road work will rear their ugly heads sometime during the trip. Build these delays into the trip so they're less stressful when they inevitably appear. In addition, plan for pit stops to stretch your legs or enjoy an early dinner during rush hour. Vacation should not include the daily grind of rush hour.

In the past, road trip entertainment consisted of conversation between passengers or listening to the radio. In most cases, that radio was tuned to the oldies station, much to the chagrin of anyone under the age of 40 in the car. Nowadays, the bevy of electronic gadgets to entertain bored or road weary travelers has grown by leaps and bounds. The travel portion of any road trip was often something to dread. Children chanting the incessant "are we there yet" could often push adults to the brink of insanity. Luckily, today's road trippers have a number of devices at their disposal to help keep people, including the kids, entertained. It used to be that AM or FM radio was the standard choice when driving. While it's true that some taking road trips

DON'T: Bring too much along. Novice road trippers often make the mistake of packing too much into the car. This creates a few problems. First and foremost, a crowded car is an uncomfortable car. Road trippers spend a significant amount of time in the car, so driver and passenger(s) alike will want to be comfortable. A case of bottled water might save a few dollars, but those savings should not come at the expense of comfort. Another downside to packing too much is the effect it might have on fuel efficiency. Fuel costs are still significant, and a car that's weighed down with unnecessary items will need more fuel to operate. Families of young children, for example, don't need to pack a backup stroller just in case the primary stroller breaks. The chances of that happening are slim, and the second stroller is likely only going to take up space and decrease fuel efficiency. Avoid double-packing items and keep in mind the veRoad trippers should remember to leave time for enjoying the road hicle does not need to be a when embarking on their trip. rolling pantry. DO: Enjoy the road. Part of the joy of road trips is their laid back nature. Unlike other vacations that require travelers get to the airport by a certain time, road trips allow travelers to move at their own paces. Enjoy the opportunity to vacation without having to wait in long lines at airports or sit through long layovers. Enjoy the road and the scenery it provides. Don't feel as though the trip needs to adhere to a strict schedule. Such schedules will make the trip seem hurried, robbing it of its relaxing nature.

packed enough CDs along to keep on rotation, most others relied on the radio. But as anyone who has driven 100 miles or more from their home base knows, stations change and static prevails on many numbers on the dial. Satellite radio is one option that can keep favorite tunes playing consistently. Others prefer to load up the Mp3 player with a long catalog of songs so there is always something being played. For kids riding along, many a parent has uttered a sigh of relief when turning on a DVD player in the car. Many family mobiles feature the option for an onboard DVD player, but they tend to be expensive. DVD units with headrest screens are available at many big box retailers for a fraction of the cost and just as much convenience. Audio may be transmitted to the car's speakers or headsets, depending on personal preference. Digital games in handheld devices can ease the boredom of long car trips. Having a game on hand passes time and can also stimulate the brain. For those who want to enjoy a little relaxation along the way, seat massagers that plug into a DC power outlet in the car or even through a USB port can offer a soothing massage while on the road. For those who cannot live without an Internet connection, a mobile WiFi account enables everyone in the car to go online while on the road. This can also be an advantage if the GPSsystem breaks down or if you need to search for a restaurant or pit stop. The conveniences of modern technology take the work and boredom out of long road trips and can turn a driving vacation into something fun. As a safety precaution, the majority of these gadgets should never be operated by the driver while the vehicle is in motion.

Everyone has their bad habits. Whether it's relatively harmless habits like biting your fingernails or potentially deadly ones like smoking cigarettes, some habits come in all shapes and sizes.

When it comes to cars, drivers' bad habits abound. Many drivers might have a host of bad habits but not even know it. Unfortunately, bad driving habits are not only detrimental to a vehicle, but they could be costing drivers money as well. The following are some of the more common poor habits that, if corrected, can add years to a vehicle's life and dollars to a driver's bank account. Running on Empty

Fuel costs are still considerable, and many drivers try to squeeze every last drop out of their tanks before returning to the filling station. Unfortunately, this is somewhat of a Pyrrhic victory. While it might feel good to get an extra day's worth of driving out of a tank of gas, the toll that running on empty takes on the rest of the vehicle is a hefty one indeed. The sediment from gasoline settles at the bottom of the gas tank, and when gas levels run low, the car must use the dirtiest gas it has as fuel. As that happens, the sediment that would otherwise remain at the bottom of the tank instead gets into the car's fuel line and even its engine. The fuel filter likely won't catch all of this dirt, and the engine will therefore be taxed unnecessarily just so drivers can go an extra day before filling up. In addition, the fuel filter's life span will shorten, forcing drivers to replace it sooner than they would need to if they simply kept more than the bare minimum intheir gas tank at all times.

Stopping and Starting

For some drivers, such as those who live in cities, constant stopping and starting is unavoidable. For others, however, this stopping and starting needs to be avoided at all costs. Drivers who enjoy accelerating and then quickly stopping between stoplights might like the adrenaline rush such driving provides, but their engines certainly don't appreciate it. Nor do their wallets. Frequently flooring the gas pedal is wasting expensive gas and putting a heavy strain on the engine. And all those quick stops is taxing the car's brakes, greatly reducing their life expectancy. Instead of stopping and starting, smoothly accelerate and anticipate stops. The engine will appreciate it and so will your wallet. Revving the Engine

Fans of the film franchise "Fast and the Furious" might love to rev their engines just like their favorite movie stars. But in real life, such a habit is pointless and potentially very harmful to a vehicle. This is especially true when a vehicle has just been started and the engine hasn't had the chance to warm up. Revving the engine while it's still cold means the vehicle's oil is still down in the oil pan and none of the engine's parts have yet been lubricated. This is certain to damage the engine significantly, and eventually, if revving is part of a driver's routine, it is going to force an engine replacement, a costly repair if there ever was one. Let the engine wake up and put an end to pointless revving.

Routinely driving while a car's fuel tank is close to empty is one bad habit drivers cannot afford to continue.

ROAD RULES

JG-TC

Boredom be gone!

Gadgets a friend to road weary travelers

Thanks to global climate change, many of the weather patterns we've grown accustomed to in the past are no longer the norm today. It seems much of the country experiences shorter than normal days of moderate spring and fall weather, with seasons simply switching from scorching sun one moment to chilly temperatures and snow the next. That means it's never too early to take a refresher course in preparing for safe winter driving. Winter weather takes all of the usual road hazards and steps them up a notch. Slippery roadways, congestion, road rage,

pedestrian traffic -- all of these situations seem magnified when the weather is poor and daylight is waning. Although winter driving may be frustrating, there are ways to prepare for the season and prevent accidents and injuries.

Prepare It's important to check that a vehicle is in top shape before the cold weather sets in. Pay special attention to the tires. If tires are bald or their wear is signficant, that could prove hazardous on weather-slicked roads. Have tires replaced before the first snowfall.

The same can be said when switching from regular performance tires to all-weather or snow tires. Be sure to change all of the tires on the car, even if it is just a front-wheel drive vehicle. Now is the time to also get a tune-up on the vehicle. Cold weather can make it hard for a car to perform at its best, and any problems should be eliminated before they spiral out of control. Be sure to top off any fluids in the car, especially windshield washer fluid you might need to improve visibility during a storm. Check the function of wiper blades and change them if they aren't up to snuff. Consult with a mechanic to find out if it is adviseable to switch motor oil viscosity during the winter to improve flow through the engine and help with cold start turnover. It also helps to stock up on supplies should you get stranded or stuck: - snow shovel - scraper/brush - tire chains - flashlight (with extra batteries) - abrasive material, like cat litter, sand, or salt - jumper cables - flares or reflective triangles - brightly colored cloth to signal for help - empty water-tight container with candles, matches or lighter, bottled water, and a snack - sleeping bags or blankets, ski caps, and mittens - first-aid supplies

Skidding How best to maneuver a car when it starts to skid depends on how the vehicle handles. If the rear wheels skid, turn the steering wheel, and subsequently the front wheels, in the same direction of the skid. If the front wheels skid, take your foot off the gas and shift to neutral. Don't try to steer immediately; the skid may slow, and traction could return. Then you can steer in the direction you want to go and put the car back into drive. Keep in mind that even with expert maneuvering it can be tricky to recover from a skid on ice. Snow tires are not infallible and may be ineffective on icy roadways.

Adverse weather conditions can make driving tricky when the winter season arrives.

Leaving Space One of the best things a person can do when driving in winter weather is to slow down and add much more room for reacting to roadway conditions. Driving slowly and braking slowly may help to prevent skids. Also, should a skid occur, having more room between you and another vehicle helps you to maneuver elsewhere or come to a stop without causing an accident. When visibility is poor, leaving extra room means you can react if something suddenly veers into the path of the car or you missed seeing it through the snow and sleet.

Stranded or Stuck Should the car break down or it becomes stuck in the snow, there are some things you can do. Be sure to steer or push the car to a safe location, if possible. Put up warning flares or triangles so that you are visible and leave the fourway flashers on if the battery is operable. You can try "rocking" the car, by putting it in drive and hitting the gas, then in reverse and pressing on the accelerator to create a valley in the snow that might free the car. Use your abrasive material to provide traction. You can also attempt to shovel out the tires. If the car is inoperable, stay in the vehicle out of harm's way and call for help on a mobile phone. Leave a window cracked open if you will be running the engine for periodic heat. The National Safety Council says that you can run the engine for heat about once every hour, or every half hour in severe cold. Be sure to clean snow from around the end of the tail pipe to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. For extra heat, don blankets or a sleeping bag to prevent hypothermia. Driving in winter conditions can be exhausting and hazardous. Being prepared for common scenarios decreases risk of accidents.

Did You Know?

A balloon car loan is one in which a car is not paid in full when the length of the loan expires. For the terms of a balloon loan to be completed, borrowers must make one final, large balloon payment. Until that balloon payment is made, borrowers do not own the vehicle. A balloon car loan does come with monthly payments, but these payments are lower and borrowers' monthly payments are typically only going toward the loan's interest. When a borrower makes a balloon payment, that payment is typically paying off the loan's principal. Arranging for a balloon car loan is good for those who cannot currently afford a high monthly payment but know their situation will change shortly. Still, the risk of a balloon loan scares many borrowers, who might not be so certain they will be able to afford the balloon payment when the loan's term ends. When agreeing a balloon car loan, borrowers should save monthly in preparation for the balloon payment at the end of the loan. Failure to do socould force borrowers to refinance or it could require the bank to repossess the vehicle, even after borrowers spent all those years paying interest.

Help Your Car Withstand Harsh Winter Weather

Help Your Car Withstand Harsh Winter Weather (712 words, US)

(MS) -- Automobiles can be very resilient. Drivers typically don't treat their cars with kid gloves, but most cars keep chugging along in spite of it. Of course, drivers who treat their cars well can expect to get as much in return from their vehicles. That's especially true when winter weather arrives, which is the harshest season vehicles must endure every year. Harsh weather coupled with less-thanideal roadways typically take their toll on a vehicle as the season progresses, and it's up to drivers to help their cars withstand the elements of winter and make it to spring in drivable condition. Short of moving to a locale that's warm and sunny 12 months a year, there's little drivers can do to avoid winter weather; however, there are several ways drivers can prepare their vehicles for the months ahead.

* Address your antifreeze. Much like a winter coat protects people from winter weather, antifreeze protects vehicles when the weather outside is frightful. Not every antifreeze is created equal, and inadequate antifreeze can cause water pump failure and even a cracked engine block. Drivers often fail to monitor their antifreeze levels throughout the winter, which can hurt their cars and might even be harmful to the environment. Traditional ethylene glycol, or EG, antifreezes have a sweet smell and taste that attracts animals and, if ingested, can harm local wildlife or even household pets. Propylene glycol antifreeze does not boast a sweet smell or taste, and though safe if ingested, reduces the likelihood that animals will be drawn to it. AMSOIL Propylene Glycol Antifreeze is compatible with all other antifreeze products and does not require a complete system flush before usage, easing the transition from EG antifreeze to a more eco-friendly alternative.

* Check the vehicle's charging system. Car batteries are forced to work harder in cold weather, making it easier for a battery to die when the mercury drops. To avoid being stranded in the cold, ask your mechanic to check the vehicle's charging system before the onset of winter to ensure the battery is ready for the cold months ahead.

* Don't tread lightly. Tire treads are especially important during the colder months, when icy or snow-packed roads make driving a dangerous undertaking. Tires with adequate traction are better

equipped to handle roads that might be covered in ice, dirt or grime from sand and salt trucks. Check tire pressure regularly, especially when the temperatures are colder, and always inflate tires to the manufacturer-recommended PSI. PSI ratings can often be found on the driver's side door.

* Monitor motor oil. An engine is only as good as the motor oil that keeps it lubricated. Poor lubrication results in friction between engine components, ultimately leading to wear and potentially taking years off engine life. Drivers should regularly monitor their motor oil levels and adhere to the manufacturer's guidelines. When choosing a lubricant, look for a synthetic motor oil to maintain engine protection and performance. Synthetic motor oils provide significant benefits over their conventional counterparts, particularly in colder weather when conventional motor oil thickens as the temperature drops. When the mercury starts to sink, conventional motor oils can slow starting rpm, restrict oil flow to critical engine parts and increase wear on bearings and rings. Conversely, synthetic motor oils still flow or pump at temperatures as much as 50 below zero, allowing cars and trucks to start with greater ease.

* Maintain visibility. Visibility is especially poor during the winter months when falling snow and dirt and grime are kicked up from the rear tires of other vehicles, making it difficult to see. To maintain adequate visibility throughout the winter, inspect wiper blades to make sure they are in peak condition. Be sure the blade fully clears the windshield of snow, rain and any other debris that might find its way into your driving line of vision. Never leave the house without enough windshield washer fluid in the reservoir, and keep an extra bottle of fluid in the trunk just to be safe. Winter driving conditions are rarely, if ever, ideal. Simple ways to add years to a vehicle's life Getting more for your money is a popular trend among consumers. As economic uncertainty reigns, smart consumers are looking for the best values in an effort to get the most out of each and every dollar they spend.

One of the best ways to stretch a dollar is to take better care of your vehicle. Buying a home and financing a college education are perhaps the only times many consumers will spend more money than they do when purchasing a vehicle. But unlike a home or an education, few people take their vehicles seriously, all too often avoiding vehicle maintenance that can greatly increase a car or truck's life expectancy. Drivers who want to keep their cars going strong for years to come can do so in a handful of ways.

* Prevent, prevent, prevent. Preventive maintenance might seem like a boring way to spend a weekend morning or afternoon, but the efforts will be well worth it. Oil changes and filter replacements are quick and easy jobs but pay major dividends over the long haul. Drivers who aren't comfortable performing these tasks themselves need not worry about costly trips to the mechanic. Routine jobs like an oil change or air filter replacement are relatively inexpensive, and today's vehicles can go much longer between oil changes and filter replacements. Each vehicle manufacturer is different, so drivers should consult their owner's manual and adhere to the recommended maintenance schedule. * Stay balanced. Balanced tires are tires that will last longer. But an out of balance tire will not only shorten the life of tires, it can also do damage to the rest of the vehicle while simultaneously making riding in the car much less comfortable. When a tire is properly balanced, its mass is uniformly distributed around the axle, making for a smooth, vibration-free ride. However, an out of balance tire shortens the life expectancy of suspension components, including

bearings and shocks. Repairs that result from an unbalanced tire can prove costly. Should a vibration occur as the vehicle accelerates (typically, this vibration will be noticeable when the car reaches speeds of 40-45 mph), chances are the tires are not properly balanced.

* Look good, feel good. The credo of "look good, feel good" isn't only applicable to humans. In fact, a car that looks good likely feels good as well.Washing and waxing a car regularly helps avoid rust under the carriage and in the wheel wells. The longer a car goes between washes, the more likely it is to rust, and the paint is likely to corrode as well. There is no quick fix to either of these problems, but preventive maintenance, like routinely washing and waxing the vehicle, can keep these potentially menacing issues from ever rearing their rusty heads. Preventing rust and corrosion is also a good way to ensure a car's resale value does not diminish over time.

* Get out and drive. Cars that spend most of their life in stop-andgo traffic likely won't last as long as those that routinely get out and go. That's because city driving with lots of stopping and going is very taxing on an engine. On a highway, air flow to the radiator, oil flow to the engine and everything that makes a car run is much more consistent, reducing the stress on the engine as a result. Constantly accelerating and decelerating is hard on an engine, while the consistent speeds of highway driving offer a welcome respite to the engine. City dwellers should get out and drive their car on a highway at least once a month for no less than 30 minutes. This is also a good way to get rid of potentially harmful condensation that can negatively impact engine performance.

When looking to get more for your money, one of the best ways to do so is to take better care of the car sitting in your driveway.
