E x e c ut i v e VP As summer has arrived here in Indianapolis, I can see the fireflies in our backyard. Just saying the word summer brings me immediately back to my Jewish summer camp experiences. I spent more than a decade of summers at Goldman Union Camp in Zionsville. Many experiences shaped my Jewish identity, but none as strongly as the time I spent at camp. Singing Jewish songs in the chadar ohel (dining hall), stories of the Baal Shem Tov around the campfire and learning about Jewish customs, history and values in a warm and accessible environment made Judaism feel like it was mine to own. And I could never leave out the great friends, sports, games and most of all, fun. You can only imagine my excitement when I got to sign my oldest son, Jonah, up for his first summer at GUCI four years ago. Now Scott and I are thrilled to be able to give all three of our boys the Jewish summer camp experience at GUCI, Ben and Sam at our Jewish Community Center day camp. We can’t wait for them to return home singing camp songs and telling us about their adventures with new friends. Thanks to the Federation, other children will be able to attend Jewish camp like my three boys. Through your generous gifts to the Federation more families can enjoy the extraordinary experience of camp. Wishing you and your family a summer filled with fireflies, friends, campfires, games and fun.

Women's P

Women have always been an integral part of the Indianapolis Jewish community—as volunteers, philanthropists, and leaders. To provide all women in greater Indianapolis more opportunities to engage in Jewish philanthropy, we have re-established Women’s Philanthropy. If you share a personal commitment to supporting the Jewish community locally, in Israel, and around the world, please join us. Chaired by Beth Klapper and Michelle Korin, Women’s Philanthropy will include educational, social, and fundraising events to appeal to a diverse group of women. For more information, contact Keren Ayalon at kayalon@JFGI.org or 317.715.9261. We look forward to seeing you at future programs!

Giving Levels

Women’s Philanthropy includes but is not limited to the following giving levels: Pomegranate Women who wear the Pomegranate pin make a pledge of $1,500-$4,999 to the Annual Campaign. Lion of Judah Women who wear the Lion of Judah pin give $5,000 and above to the Annual Campaign. Today, 17,000 women around the world wear a Lion of Judah pin to declare their commitment to the preservation and growth of the worldwide Jewish community.

Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE) A special group of women who establish an endowment fund of $100,000 or more to perpetuate their annual campaign gift at the Lion of Judah level. A LOJE is a powerful statement of a donor’s commitment to tzedakah, providing a legacy for family and community.

Lions may be different ages. Come from different places. Have different styles. Still, we are very alike. We are all dynamic, Jewish philanthropic women who share the same passion for our Jewish world. And together, we form an amazing force for tikkun olam.

volunteering in our community, the majority of whom are from the former Soviet Union. In 2015, Clara Fridman was the recipient of the Len Perel Memorial Scholarship. “I am incredibly grateful for the generous scholarship from Len Perel’s family. I applied it toward my educational expenses, and hope to honor his memory through my academic success and my involvement in the Jewish community," says Clara. "Throughout high school, I was active in local Jewish life. I taught a two-year course in Jewish culture to pre-teen children of Soviet immigrants at the Indianapolis Russian school, and held leadership positions at school clubs including the Jewish Student Union and the Middle East Awareness Club. I have stayed involved in Jewish life after moving to university this fall. I took classes in early Jewish history, Jewish cooking, and Hebrew, in addition to attending Hillel functions. In fact, I am pursuing a certificate in Jewish Studies, as well as majors in Computer Science and Russian. "While I am not yet fully certain about my post-graduation plans, I am sincerely thankful to the family of Len Perel for supporting me as I pursue all of my varied interests, and ensuring that I am well-equipped and prepared for any course my future takes me.” If you would like to contribute to the Len Perel Memorial Scholarship Fund or are interested in establishing your own scholarship fund, please contact Pamela Eicher at 317.715.6981 or peicher@JFGI.org.

Len Perel Memorial Scholarship Honors Life of Active Volunteer and Immigrant

Len Perel immigrated to the United States with his wife, Raisa and son, Gary from Leningrad in 1979. A true self-made man, Len took his experience as a general manager of a construction company in Leningrad and established his own construction companies in Indianapolis—P&H Construction and LM Enterprises specializing in restaurant construction and commercial development. Successful in his business endeavors, Len turned immediately to helping fellow new immigrant families. Both Len and Raisa became very active in the Russian Resettlement program. Len was instrumental in helping these families find jobs, and Raisa made sure that they had fully stocked apartments with all of the necessities including furniture, clothes, and toys for the children. Through their compassion and generosity, they improved the lives of countless new Americans. Len was honored for his volunteer service with the Ivan Chalfie Award from Jewish Family and Children’s Service. He also served on the board of Park Regency and the Jewish Federation along with HIAS, the national organization helping new Americans in resettlement. Tragically, in January of 1998, Len died from cancer at the age of 50. Although he lived in Indianapolis for only 17 years, Len’s legacy is still felt today. Shortly after his death, Raisa and son Gary established the Len Perel Memorial Scholarship as a way of memorializing Len’s impact of helping others in our community. For over two decades, distributions from this fund have provided academic scholarships for students

En g a gem e n t An Inclusive, Interfaith Family Seder On Sunday, April 10, we welcomed approximately 220 guests to our inclusive Seder for interfaith couples and families at Market Disctrict as a part of our programming for interfaith members of our community. Why offer an inclusive Seder for interfaith couples and their families? Jewish hospitality began with Abraham and Sarah, in a story about the welcome they gave to wayfarers. In fact, the Seder itself begins with the statement, “Let all who are hungry come and eat.” What’s more, so many of our biblical heroes … typically men … were married to women from other religious backgrounds. This long line of venerated women includes Tzipporah, who was the wife of Moses, and Osnat, who was the wife of Joseph and the mother of Menashe and Ephraim, boys whose names we invoke when we bless our sons. These women—women of other faiths—receive little attention in our tradition, yet they were partners with and raised leaders of our people. The more modern answer is found in the Pew Research Center report on Jews in America released in the fall of 2013. One of its major findings was that among those Jews who married between 2005 and 2013, 58 percent have non-Jewish spouses. When asked what they liked most about the Seder, here's what two guests said: “I loved that it was so welcoming and inclusive of everyone, no matter what their background.” “Everyone in our party felt welcome from my 93-year-old grandfather to my 18-month-old daughter.” The Federation welcomes anyone wanting a connection to the Jewish Community. Why a Jewish Demographic Study? “How many Jews are there in the greater Indianapolis area?” We all “know” the answer. For more than seven decades the answer has been 10,000. Of course, we realize that 10,000 may not be the right answer. That number does not account for the changes in our community. For example, in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s our community welcomed and helped to resettle at least 3,000 individuals from the former Soviet Union. But, we still answer the question the same way—there are 10,000 Jews in greater Indianapolis. Therefore, we are thrilled to announce that the Federation’s Executive Committee recommended, and our Board of Directors approved, the engagement of a demographer to conduct a Jewish Community Study for greater Indianapolis. This will be the first study in close to 80 years! In a recent article, researchers Ira Sheskin, Ph.D. and Steven Cohen, Ph.D. provide a clear explanation for how a current, accurate community demographic study helps the community make informed allocation decisions.

donors’ interest in helping overcome these o bstacles as well as to direct additional resources towards subsidies. • Several communities have come to grips with the anticipated explosion in the number of w ell-elderly and not-so-well elderly members of the Baby Boom generation. • Synagogues have changed expansion plans or made locational decisions on the basis of geographic movements in the Jewish population. Our Federation is the central fundraising and coordinating body for the greater Indianapolis Jewish population. Federation provides funds for various Jewish social service agencies, volunteer programs, educational bodies, and related organizations, with allocations being made to the various constituent and beneficiary agencies by our Planning and Allocation Committee. It is the Federation’s duty to assure that funds raised from individuals and families through the Annual Campaign and from endowments are allocated responsibly to meet the current needs as well as the anticipated future needs of our community. We believe that the results of the demographic study will provide a trove of valuable information to assist us in assuring a strong, healthy Jewish community—a community prepared to respond to the needs of its members, now and in the future. Please make sure to answer the call and make the time to participate in this important community study. If you are interested in learning more or in participating in this process, please feel free to call our Executive VP, Debby Barton Grant or Director of Planning and Engagement, Patti Freeman Dorson.

While the number of Jews in a community is certainly important, as is learning whether the population has been expanding or contracting, Jewish community studies go well beyond—and behind—the overall population figure. Typically, they provide rich information about such issues as aging, poverty, social welfare needs, patterns of Jewish engagement, Jewish education, intermarriage, charitable giving, geographic distribution, migration patterns, and basic population characteristics (e.g., age, marital status, and income)1. Working with a demographic researcher, our goal is to define, as well as uncover, policy needs in our community. We will choose survey questions carefully to elicit information about our community that will help us to define our community priorities and inform allocation decisions now and into the future. Dr. Sheskin and Dr. Cohen cite numerous examples of the ways studies’ findings uncover needs and inform policy and funding decisions in certain communities. Here are just a few cited by the authors:

• The Jewish Community Study of New York 2011 uncovered more than half a million Jews living in poverty or near-poverty. This was a sharp increase from 2002 and the cause for a new focus on providing social services, advocacy, and other attention to the massive number of povertystricken Jewish households. • Communities have learned in a powerful way how income and cost barriers prevent families from joining synagogues and JCCs and from sending their children to Jewish day schools, Jewish summer camps, and Israel. Such information can be used effectively to sharpen

Holoca us t E d uca tion

March of the Living by Tahlia Korin For one week, 20,000 Jewish teens from around the world walked in the footsteps of their ancestors to comprehend the complexity that is the Holocaust. Together we retraced the death march from Auschwitz to Birkenau as the rain poured down from above. At the moment we discovered the crematoriums, the sun started to shine as we stood arm and arm singing Hatikvah. Tahlia Korin and a friend For one week, 20,000 Jewish teens touched barbed wire in Auschwitz, recited Mourners' Kaddish in Birkenau, clung to one another in Majdanek, and vowed to never forget the fallen in Treblinka. We bellowed songs of love in hopes of bringing a small amount of good to places that hold great evil. We walked the tracks that brought millions to their deaths to remind the world that we have not forgotten. We have not forgotten the fathers, the mothers, the sons, and the daughters who were ripped from the world far too quickly.

In order to remember, we marched the Death March and lived. We started our walk as 20,000 individuals and as we walked the tracks of Auschwitz we left hand and hand. We decorated Birkenau with plaques written with quotes of love. We walked the perimeter of Treblinka to show that At the entrance to Auschwitz even after buildings are destroyed the dead will not be forgotten. We sang in death camps as a means of defiance. Finally, one week later on May 9, we could breathe easy. We arrived home ... Israel. There, we danced for six million in the streets of Jerusalem in honor of our country’s independence. We stood at attention to pay tribute to 23,320 sons and daughters who will never return home. In Israel, we walked the Old City and danced at the Western Wall with Jews from Argentina, South Africa, and Panama. In Israel six million did not become six million dead but six million living. Twenty thousand teens came together to become the stories, the names, and living witnesses to six million individuals. March of the Living commemorates the dead and celebrates the living. From the ashes of the fallen to the promises of the future, 20,000 teens bore witness. Never again, it is “for the dead and the living, we must bear witness.” – Elie Wiesel.

the Federation

The Hooverwood family proudly honored the residents and staff during this year’s celebration of National Nursing Home Week, which began on May 8, 2016. The theme of the week, “It’s a Small World with a Big Heart,” highlighted various cultures and traditions from around the world. Entertainment included Bollywood belly dancers, a mariachi band, and a safari animal show. Activities included henna art, lunch at a Chinese restaurant, a Zumba exercise class, and an African heritage fashion show and discussion. Hooverwood’s employees and residents participated in a lip sync battle and enjoyed an ice cream social. Many thanks to Hooverwood’s amazing activity department for all of their hard work in making this week so special for everyone.

Name: Katya Klauz Family: I have a husband (Michael) and two daughters (Stacy and Anna), plus two furry grandchildren (Wallace the dog and Doris the cat). Hometown: Saint Petersburg, Russia Something you might not know about me: I can play almost any tune by ear on the piano.

Position at the Federation: “Kavod” Holocaust Survivors Program Coordinator Worked here since: April 2016 People can come to me if they need: If you or your family member is a Holocaust survivor, I would be happy to talk with you about any needs that you or they might have, including social, psychological, or any other day-to-day issues. Ideas about desired programs are welcome! Why I find working for the Federation meaningful: For me being able to help a Holocaust survivor is an honor, and I’m happy to do my small part in helping our community thrive. On a more personal level, I came to Indianapolis as an immigrant back in 1994, and was amazed and deeply humbled by the way our Jewish community prepared everything to welcome my family and so many other refugees from the former Soviet Union. Now, 20 years later, I consider my work at the Federation to be my way of giving back to our community.

The Hooverwood employees once again worked endless hours in preparing the residents’ home for Passover. The Main Dining Room looked beautiful and the Food Service Department served a delicious traditional Passover meal. Due to the current renovation and construction project, this year’s Seder, led by Rabbis Lew and Faedra Weiss and family, was for residents only. Once the project is over, Hooverwood looks forward to once again inviting residents’ family members for future seders. Many thanks to everyone for their preparation and service during the Passover holiday.

Hillels Butler Hillel Celebrates Passover

Hasten Hebrew Academy Students Excel Outside the Classroom

Butler Hillel students held their annual Passover Seder in the Johnson Room of Robertson Hall on April 17. Rabbi Scott Fox from Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation led students in the dynamic and beautiful seder. A delicious Passover dinner cooked by Bluebakes, Inc., Community Advisor Nonie Vonnegut-Gabovitch, and local families was served. Students discussed what freedom looks like today— whether that is freedom from our cell phones or for Syrian Refugees. The Seder was the last event of the semester, capping off a full year of programming, ranging from Israel-themed Shabbat dinners with community Shlicha Inbar Nadir to social outings to Escape Room Indianapolis. While students are off having incredible summer experiences, internships, and jobs, Butler Hillel is already excited to begin planning for the fall. Please save the date for a community-wide event, the Gerstein Travel Fund Reception, on September 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the Reilly Room of Atherton Hall where travel fund recipient Eleanor Hersch will discuss her trip to Poland with the CANDLES (Children of Auschwitz Nazi Deadly Lab Experiments Survivors) Museum.

Sixth graders presented to a panel for the Imagine-Call to Action program on Water: The Lifeblood of Humanity. Students researched water-related issues and worked with the community Shlicha, Inbar Nadir, to learn how Israel pioneers ways to provide water to desert climates through cloud seeding. Students made an educational and humorous video to show ways that people of all ages contribute to this cause. Sixth graders Emilie Sondhelm and Shayna Orentlicher wrote winning essays that were displayed at the "Power of Children" exhibit at The Children’s Museum. Emilie wrote about empowering people with disabilities and Shayna discussed women's rights. Yael Cohen received an honorable mention in the National Heritage Essay Contest presented by the Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple. The topic was “What Freedom Means to Me.” Every year, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students at the Academy enter the Letters about Literature contest, sponsored by the Library of Congress. Students write to an author to describe how a book influenced their lives. This year, the Academy had 11 winners, including two Honorable Mentions by Lenny Perel and Yael Cohen. Nataly David-Smith and Michaela Geller-Montague both were semi-finalists for the second year in a row. Rivkah Bunes, Sara Feiga Gluck, Tristen West, Jano Vasquez Jaffe, Tal Friedman, Elijah Shemesh, and Emilie Sondhelm were also semi-finalists. HHAI put on a talent show that showcased the talents of the students, including magic, hoola hoops, dancing, singing, piano playing, and a ventriloquist. The show was directed by the music teacher, Ann Sloan. Hasten Hebrew Academy students also excel in athletics. The fifth/ sixth grade volleyball team was crowned 2015 Indianapolis Independent School League Champions. They finished the season 11-1, and the seventh/eighth grade team finished 5-5. The soccer team finished with an undefeated 8-0 record. The fifth/sixth grade basketball team was undefeated and the seventh/eighth grade team finished with a winning record.

Galilee Hospital and a school in Akko. IU Hillel prides itself on being a home away from home for Jewish students and happily opened its doors to over 350 students across multiple campus locations for Passover Seders. Throughout the week, Hillel was able to ensure students had a place to keep Passover by providing hundreds of Kosher-for-Passover meals. IU Hillel had many inspiring successes this past year and is looking forward to more new and innovative programming in the fall of 2016!

An Exciting 2015-16 Year at Helene G. Simon Hillel Center at IU IU Hillel began the year welcoming in the class of 2019, and, as the school year ended, extended a mazel tov and goodbye to the class of 2016. In their four years on IU's campus, these students, part of the 4,500+ Jewish students on campus, were afforded numerous opportunities for getting involved in the Jewish community. Tikkun olam is central to IU Hillel’s mission. In addition to two major days of service on Martin Luther King Jr, Day and Labor Day, there were other opportunities for tikkun olam. Students helped at the Shalom Food Shelter, Big Brother Big Sister, a community garden, and more. The Mitzvah Corps group and Challah for Hunger provided students with regular opportunities to do tikkun olam throughout the year. Hillel’s Greek Leadership classes volunteered at Habitat for Humanity. Through a partnership with the Jewish Greek houses on campus, IU Hillel screened the Israeli documentary Brave Miss World on campus and had a dinner with director Cecilia Peck prior to the screening. Students were empowered to speak out against sexual assault and to be agents of social change. The over 300 students in attendance were visibly moved by the film’s powerful message. Inclement weather couldn’t rain on Hillel’s parade as it held its best yet annual Israelpalooza in April thanks to the work of IU Hillel Israel Fellow, Dotan Jakoby. Students got to hear the camp-circuit-famous Dan Nichols while noshing on Israeli treats and showing their love and support for Israel. Israel pride continued this summer as IU Hillel took two Birthright Israel Collaborative Enhancement Project (BICEP) buses of 80 students to Israel. Students had a powerful experience that included Stand With Us programming, a visit to an army base, travel to the JFGI Partnership2Gether region, and visits to the Western

Ball State Hillel Update Ball State has an active Hillel organization, and over the past several years it has been growing and providing more experiences for Jewish life on campus. Events this past year have included Shabbat dinners, Havdalah ceremonies followed by dinners with Congregation Beth-El Zedeck’s engaging and energetic Student Rabbi Jenn, parties for Chanukah and Purim, a Sukkot dinner, and a Passover Seder. Students always have a festive time celebrating with one another at events, and the Hillel continues to warmly welcome new members to join. Hillel students ended this year with fond memories of working on various tikkun olam projects and joining (or perhaps “crashing”) Butler Hillel’s Chanukah party. At the end of the school year, everyone said goodbye at the annual end-of-the-year dinner and start planning for next year’s activities, including an interfaith dinner that Hillel will co-host in the fall with various campus religious groups. With BSU’s Hillel continuing to grow and the enthusiasm of its members, the upcoming year is sure to be fun and fulfilling.
