Welcome

January 15, 2011 It is a great pleasure to welcome you to Celebrate SEVENTY-FIVE, the 75th Anniversary celebration of the Jewish Federation of San Diego County.

It is a particular pleasure to thank our past Women’s Division and Federation presidents. Past presidents dating back to 1957 are joining us, and we welcome them with gratitude and admiration for all they did to help bring us to where we are today. We celebrate our present as we, with our partners, serve untold thousands of Jews here, in Israel, and internationally. In meeting the myriad of ongoing daily needs, Federation welcomes the responsibility of saving and enriching lives. Additionally, Federation spearheads responses to emergencies that threaten the safety of our community and communities around the world. From the San Diego fires in 2003, to the earthquake in Haiti, to the recent fires in Israel, Federation leads the way. Strengthening our future is the call to action for all of us tonight. Let us draw from the inspiring example set by our history and our past leaders to respond with commitment and pride. Sincerely,

Jan Tuttleman, Board Chair

Steven J. Morris, President & CEO

Welcome

Tonight we honor Federation’s achievements in our community. Federation was born in 1936 when several forward-thinking leaders responded to the needs of Jews here and around the world. As the Holocaust began to cast its horrifying shadow over the Jews of Europe, Judge Jacob Weinberger and several dedicated founders formed the United Jewish Fund of San Diego, whose purpose was to aid Jews who were being caught in Hitler’s web, as well as to meet the needs of the Jewish settlers in Palestine.

Some of the highlights of my presidency that I find note“worthy include a Leadership Development program that was designed specifically for our board members; a board directory that was created to be a resource for orienting fellow board members and professional staff; and the first overnight board retreat, which fostered camaraderie, facilitated goal setting and identified leadership styles. I am also proud that the @night educational program was conceived during my tenure.

most poignant moment for me during my time as President “ofThe Women’s Division was during my induction ceremony. As I stood there making my commitment to the women in front of me, I was overwhelmed by the collective enthusiasm and passion for both the organization and the mission, which we were representing. Not only did I feel an enormous sense of pride that I had been elected to the position, but also an enormous sense of responsibility. I realized that I had stepped into a line-up of some very impressive women who had held the position before me and knew that I was now in a position to both inspire and be inspired.

I look back with joy and gratitude for the wonderful lay and “professional women whom I worked with, honing my leadership skills in an environment of love and support. I am so grateful for the travel I got to participate in, whether to Kharkov in the FSU, Poland on the March of the Living with our women’s mission, or numerous trips to Israel – particularly the community mission that I co-chaired with my husband, Clive. I will always be grateful for the lifelong friendships I’ve made with women who share the same values that I do, and will always remember the lives that we impacted by our lifesaving work. I thank the women who came before me and applaud and encourage the women who have come to follow.

In order to reflect back on my Presidency of Women’s Division, “I first have to reflect back to my initial involvement. I will never forget my first board installation, getting a phone call from Jane Scher inviting me to sit on the Women’s Division Board, sitting in Jackie Woolf’s beautiful backyard at the board installation and listening to Miriam Robbins speak about her vision as President. At that point, I knew I found a home. I met women who were passionate about their involvement and enriched my life with knowledge and Jewish traditions. My involvement set me on a course of how I raise my children, live a meaningful Jewish life, cherish my lifelong friendships and make a difference in my community. I must simply say THANK YOU to all of you in my wonderful community.

Women’s Division was where I got my feet wet in the Jewish “community. I am particularly proud of several innovative projects that I initiated during my presidency, specifically the Women’s Seder and the Social Action Committee. I am delighted to see the new generation of leaders who are carrying on a proud legacy with great talent and commitment.

My proudest achievement is probably the immensely “successful establishment of the popular outreach/in reach program, Shalom Baby. I’m most grateful to the Jewish Federation of San Diego, the Jewish Community Center, the Jewish Community Foundation and other collaborative foundations, staff and volunteers, for this “gift” to our community. May it go from strength to strength – Mi’chayil L’chayil, from blessing to blessing – Mi’Brachah Livrachah, and from generation to generation – Mi’Dor L’Dor.

I am very proud of the fact that we built a highly-functioning, “excited, creative and fiscally responsible board. The Lech L’cha Leadership program, which developed inspired, passionate leadership for the next 10 years, was another accomplishment of which I am very proud. I am also pleased that we developed a booklet of testimonies from women who had endowed their Lion of Judah gifts, which informed other Lion of Judah donors and inspired them to leave their own endowments.

As President of Women’s Division in 1995, I had the enormous “pleasure of participating in the Shalom Community Mission to Israel. There were 220 of us who went on a trip that would forever change our lives. On November 4, just a couple of days after our arrival, Yitzhak Rabin, the Prime Minister of Israel, was murdered. At that moment, all of us ceased being American tourists and became one with the millions of Israelis who were mourning the inexplicable loss. In the more than 20 missions to Israel that I have participated in, none has left a deeper mark on my life than our 1995 Shalom Mission.

Jacqueline Woolf 1993-1994

It was a privilege to have had the opportunity to serve as “Federation’s Campaign Chair and President of Women’s Division in San Diego. One of the highlights for me was the creation of the Options program, which offered many hundreds of Jewish women from all walks of life an opportunity to come together with the common interest of helping Jews in need. As a leader, I shared my passion for helping and supporting Jewish children at risk in Israel and all over the world. I also learned that collectively, we as empowered Jewish women were able to touch so many in need, and truly make a difference in their lives. Today, my husband Bertie and I are very proud of our children’s commitment and involvement in taking care of people in need.

The best memory of my involvement with the United Jewish “Federation was getting to know and working with a group of

women committed to our Jewish community and Israel.

Women’s Division Presidents

Linda Platt 1992-1993

Women’s Division Presidents

Mary Ann Scher 1991-1992

During my Presidency we started a monthly board study “group with Dr. Sandy Lakoff as our scholar. Our educational and outreach programs consisted of Education Day, Leadership Development, Forum for Jewish Women, Inland Lunch Club, Coastal Lunch Club and the Women’s Business and Professional Alliance. During this time we had a very successful annual campaign and also raised money for Operation Exodus II.

fondest memory of my presidency was participating on “a The Women’s Division Mission to Israel four days after the end of the First Gulf War. Not only did we see bomb-scarred buildings, blacked-out windows and gas masks in every home, but we also greeted Russian immigrants. Dancing on the tarmac with new Israelis is one of the highlights of my life.

Women’s Division Presidents

Andrea Oster 1990-1991

Women’s Division Presidents

Barbara Sherman 1989-1990

fondest memory of being President of Women’s Division “is My of the incredibly talented leadership team I was privileged to work with. So many of the women who were mentored during this period of time effected incredible change in the community, and went on to create extraordinary programs that have succeeded and continue to make a difference in people’s lives. I loved working with dedicated, talented, very intelligent women who were committed to making our Jewish world a better place.

I was very involved in National UJA and was Chair of UJA’s “Endowment and JDC’s Latin America Area Committees, which showcased our Federation as a strong supporter of overseas needs. We participated in many missions to Israel, FSU and Eastern Europe and learned about worldwide Jewish communities. The national involvement of many of our leaders helped sustain the overseas allocation. We also advocated for our partner agencies and started a planning process addressing this issue. I also brought the Wexner Program to San Diego, which educated promising people who went on to lead the community.

Women’s Division Presidents

Rebecca Newman 1987-1989

Women’s Division Presidents

Adele Reznikoff 1985-1987

When I reflect about my years in a leadership role with the “Women’s Division, what comes to mind is not one major accomplishment, but how we worked together as a team, and how our combined actions strived for the greater good. I think it was this sense that we were serving a higher cause that we felt passionate about and dedicated to, that I will remember most. It was a feeling of a higher calling and that we were truly making a difference.

My fondest memories were of all the wonderful friendships and “outstanding people whom I was privileged to work with and to know. I think that defined my 20 years of involvement in the Federation. However, if I have to pick one thing that I am most proud of during my presidency, I would say it was the formation of the Women’s Forum. We selected over 20 young women from various areas of the city, as well as representatives from all the synagogues to discuss ways to educate and involve more women in Federation. It was an extremely well received program, which was still active when I retired. I also honored the past Presidents on the 25th anniversary of Women’s Division, which had just reached the million dollar level.

Women’s Division Presidents

Betty Fain 1984-1985

Women’s Division Presidents

Roselyn Pappelbaum 1982-1983

During my presidency, many of the future leaders of the “Federation and the community initially became involved by joining our board, going on missions to Israel, learning about the role of the Federation locally, nationally and internationally. We welcomed newcomers to the community and our community was enriched by their involvement.

Twenty-eight years ago, I left my position as Women’s Division “President in the morning and went to the Federation office in the afternoon as the new Women’s Division Director. It was an exciting time for me and the first time a volunteer was asked to step into the role of a Federation professional. It was the beginning of a long list of women who followed me into Jewish community professional service. As president, I had served on the search committee which selected Steve Abramson as the new Federation CEO. Steve went on to serve the community superbly for 25 years. My greatest fulfillment was seeing the women I mentored rise within Federation and go on to regional and national leadership.

Women’s Division Presidents

Nadja Kauder 1981-1982

Women’s Division Presidents

Lillian Weiner 1979

During my term as President of Women’s Division, I had the “opportunity to work with an incredibly dedicated group of lay leaders and staff. By the late 1970s, Women’s Division was becoming a fundraising force in its own right, hosting noted U.S. and Israeli dignitaries at various events. Missions to Israel continued to be an important component of community philanthropy for Israel. During my presidency, I was honored to have led San Diego’s first Women’s Division Mission to Israel, a tradition that continues even more strongly today. Over a dozen San Diego mission participants and a few of our daughters joined with the UJA National Women’s Mission to experience Israel first hand and to meet with high-ranking Israeli dignitaries.

Women’s Division Presidents

Women’s Division Presidents

Marian Silverman 1976-1977

I feel my greatest accomplishment as President was influencing “and encouraging young women on my board to continue as

active volunteers and leaders in Federation’s future years.

For someone who is not a social person, the presidency of “Women’s Division was an enormous challenge. I felt and still feel a strong responsibility to the Jewish community and to Israel. Fortunately for me, I had incredible support from a very strong board of women who were equally committed and willing to work hard. There are too many to name here, but know that I truly appreciated all of you.

Women’s Division Presidents

Joan Berg 1975

Women’s Division Presidents

Irene Borevitz 1975-1976

My fondest memories are of the women I worked with, their “dedication, hard work and especially their friendship. Accomplishments included raising increased funds and expanding education programs, thereby broadening our base. I am also incredibly proud of winning the Young Leadership Award. The award included participating in the UJA General Assembly, which was a great experience.

When I was Women’s Division President we were involved with an “outreach program called ‘Group Dynamics’. Interested women hosted meetings at which a Women’s Division leader would tell the Federation story and promote discussion. I was also part of a group that told the story in song and performed for any group that would invite us. Our women’s campaign grew until we reached the daunting figure of $150,000. On a trip to Israel, my husband and I were invited to the Tank Corps in Ashkelon. We were treated to a military briefing, a tour of the camp, a special lunch with the commander and were allowed to sit behind the wheel of a tank. I also spent a morning touring San Diego with Yitzhak and Leah Rabin.

Women’s Division Presidents

Women’s Division Presidents

Sivia Mann 1970-1971

I became involved in Women’s Division in the early sixties, “it When was a very young and small organization. However, one firmly believed that it was necessary to educate ourselves about the Jewish condition both here and in the State of Israel and that women had to have their special ideas and voices heard. It has been an enormous thrill to see how far we have come.

According to Sivia Mann, Pauline and Sivia worked together to develop the concept of a year-round functioning Women’s Division which was staffed by a professional and featured a full committee structure. They included an educational component which made it possible to attract talented women who initially didn’t feel comfortable soliciting, as well as those who felt they couldn’t participate unless they gave a very large gift. They instituted the top category of Leading Ladies at $500, which, despite gloomy predictions, was very successful.

Women’s Division Presidents

Our first “Big Gifts” luncheon was for donors who gave $250, “and it cost $25 to attend. The luncheons were hosted by ladies such as Anne Ratner and Selma Goets. Once our guest speaker was the head of the Israeli Army, and once it was the head of the Israeli Women’s Army. Everyone was absolutely enthralled.

tenure was a time of change for the Federation, including “a My new name, logo, vision and future plan. But most importantly, I am proudest of the recruitment of our new CEO, Steven J. Morris. Also, in response to the economic crisis, the Federation and the Jewish Community Foundation collaborated to form the Joint Economic Crisis Relief Fund to assist the neediest Jews in our community.

Federation Presidents

Andrea Oster 2008-2010

Federation Presidents

Kenneth Polin 2006-2008

My fondest memories and proudest achievements of my tenure “involve the emergency campaign for the Israel/Lebanese War, which occurred at the begining of my Chairmanship. This extraordinary effort demonstrated the way San Diego’s Jewish community can rally during an emergency. The community-wide event at which President Bill Clinton spoke also demonstrated the manner in which our community can join together. Additionally, we transitioned from a large community board to a smaller working board, which greatly improved our corporate governance. I was proud of the board’s participation and decisionmaking regarding Federation’s activities and goals.

Working for the good of our people, arm in arm with lay leaders “and Federation’s caring and devoted staff members, will always form my fondest memories of my term as president, along with wonderful memories of the missions to Israel I was fortunate to take or lead. My proudest presidential accomplishment is spearheading our strategic change process, bringing multifaceted and foundational changes to Federation so that we could better serve our Jewish community.

Federation Presidents

Steven Solomon 2004-2006

Federation Presidents

Gary Jacobs 2002-2004

My time as Federation President was all about community “building. I was proud to work toward the goal of seeing a comprehensive network of Jewish philanthropy for San Diego that supported our entire community and our partner agencies.

During the time I was President, we raised more unrestricted “dollars than ever before and generated more new gifts. Over 1,200 people attended a solidarity rally for Israel. We organized the first ever joint Federation executive committee and synagogue board retreat. One of the most significant accomplishments was that we found a new home for the Federation and the Jewish Community Foundation. Through the generosity of the Viterbi Family, we named the new building the Joseph and Lenka Finci United Jewish Federation Building. I was fortunate during my two years of presidency to partner with Steve Abramson. It was an honor and a pleasure to work side by side with him.

Federation Presidents

Mary Ann Scher 2000-2002

Federation Presidents

Richard Katz 1998-2000

My fondest and proudest memory of my tenure was the “establishment of our partnership in Israel with Sha’ar HaNegev and the Ibim Student Village. It represented a heartfelt community effort. All of us shone brightly from the glow of the Ibim students.

The best memories I have of my year as UJF President were the “excellent times I had working with Steve Abramson and the Federation staff. Our day-to-day contacts brought gales of laughter and moments of intense discussion and planning. I was always astonished by their dedication and commitment. Working with such a talented group made my tenure a truly positive and joyful experience.

Federation Presidents

Rodney Stone 1997-1998

Federation Presidents

Gloria Stone 1995-1997

The highlight of my presidency was the incredible community “mission to Israel led by my husband, Rod, in November 1995. Over 200 people joined us for the largest mission in San Diego’s history. We experienced the wonders and joys of Israel and the sorrows of historical events when Prime Minister Itzak Rabin was assassinated during our trip. We had the opportunity to mourn with the Israeli people and the world, and to experience the true meaning of community solidarity. It was a privilege I will never forget.

Federation Presidents

Rebecca Newman 1993-1995

Federation Presidents

Lawrence Sherman 1991-1993

During my presidency, the Federation continued to grow in “stature and in its role as the central address for the Jewish community; but my fondest memory was the camaraderie and kinship with the Federation staff and a core group of young and upcoming community leaders – a relationship that continues to this day. We shared a commitment to the Federation and its local and worldwide activities. These shared values were enhanced by participating in many missions to Israel and other parts of the world.

I was extraordinarily proud that we raised an unprecedented “total of $12 million during my presidency, which included a remarkable response from our community to Operation Exodus. Our community also came together to help resettle the Soviet Jews. Our partner agencies responded to this great challenge in a truly inspiring manner to help these people start new lives in San Diego.

Federation Presidents

A Jew” issue arose during my presidency. I was fortunate “toThe “Who Is have been a San Diego representative who delivered petitions, signed by over 150,000 American Jews, to Israel’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister urging them not to allow the Law of Return to be changed. As a result of San Diego’s mission and dozens of others, a unity government was formed and the issue of “Who Is A Jew” was shelved. Another unanticipated issue that arose during my presidency was the USSR’s decision to release over 40,000 Jews. A special Federation task force was formed to coordinate local resettlement efforts and to assist with resettlement in Israel. Our agencies and synagogues worked in harmony to assist in this unique opportunity.

The celebration of Federation’s 75th anniversary immediately “brought to my mind the celebration of Federation’s 50th anniversary, which was the highlight of my term as president. My congratulations to the leadership which brought us to this significant occasion, and my best wishes to those future leaders who will lead Federation to its 100th anniversary.

Federation Presidents

Howard Brotman 1986-1988

Federation Presidents

Gerald Kobernick 1984-1986

Federation really moved forward when we hired our new “director, Steve Abramson, during my tenure. We also moved from our El Cajon Boulevard address at that time to our new office at 4797 Mercury Street. It took us a while, but the whole emphasis of dedication changed, and much for the better, if I do say so.

One of the most meaningful achievements of my presidency “was being elected the first woman to chair a major agency in the Jewish community. My tenure was from 1982 until 1983. My position opened the way for other women to follow and be given opportunities that simply didn’t exist prior to this time. One of the most exciting opportunities I had was going on a mission to Israel in June 1983. The Israeli government invited Steve Abramson, Herb Solomon and myself to go to Israel and Lebanon to see first-hand Operation Peace for the Galilee. At that time, Israel was defending its Northern borders in order to stop the PLO incursion.

“It was an honor to serve as the president of UJF San Diego. During my tenure, UJF was the central address for Jewish philanthropy, funding local agencies and Israel social needs. I also believe that my involvement inspired my children, Lori Bolotin and Michael Levinson, to participate in San Diego community life.

“It was an honor to be of service to the Jewish people.

During my presidency I really enjoyed going to Israel on the “UJA mission. The Jewish Federation was a lot smaller back then. At the time, Louis Lieblich was the Executive Director, and it was such a pleasure to work with him.

Federation Presidents

David Alpert 1974-1975

Federation Presidents

Herbert Solomon 1965-1967

What I most remember from my presidency is that we created the “Bureau of Jewish Education (now the Agency for Jewish Education) and the Community Foundation of the UJF (now the Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego). The most profound occurance during my presidency was the Six-Day War. In response to that crisis, Federation held an extraordinary community rally at Golden Hall, which over 3,000 San Diego Jews attended. In addition, a major gifts event was held at a private home where we raised an unprecedented amount of money, including funds from San Diego Jews who hadn’t previously contributed to Federation.

The year 1960 saw us reach the third highest campaign total in our “history. More importantly, it was a year of heartening accomplishment, in that so many members of our community gave sacrificially to our humanitarian campaign. Our Jewish Community Relations Council saw a virtual rebirth. The Council was engaged in mapping out a long-term program to strengthen civil rights and American democracy locally. During this time, the services of our constituent agencies were at an all-time high. For the first time, the professional staffs of the Jewish Community Center, Jewish Social Service Agency and Hebrew Home for the Aged were complete; their services were therefore fully given.

Federation Presidents

Milton Roberts 1957

During my presidency, I had the extraordinary privilege to be “approached by Dr. Roger Revelle, who asked for help in getting La Jolla Jews to support construction of the La Jolla Playhouse. Dr. Revelle was shocked to learn that Jews were not welcome to own homes or businesses in La Jolla. Subsequently, Dr. Revelle worked tirelessly to eliminate the anti-Semitic restrictions in La Jolla. At a town council meeting, he stated, “You can’t have a university without having Jewish professors. The Real Estate Brokers’ Association and supporters… (have) to make up their minds, do they (want) a university or an anti-Semitic covenant. You (can’t) have both.” I am proud to have been a catalyst in the process which led to the establishment of UCSD, Salk Institute and the La Jolla Playhouse, named after our community’s Mandell Weiss.
