As Ori’s mom, I would like to introduce you to my son. We live in Israel and when Ori was young, he communicated with his eyes and I was the only one who understood him. He started attending Beit Issie Shapiro, a beneficiary agency of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, and everything changed. At the Aaron De Lowe Early Intervention Center, the therapists immediately saw his potential. Soon, he was walking with a walker and eventually learned to speak, using a communication board. Once he was able to fully express himself, he spoke about his dreams, one of which was to visit Poland to remember the victims of the Holocaust. He went and it was a feeling of “We won… I’m a Jewish person with physical disabilities, standing here in Poland.” All he wanted was to be like every other teenager in Israel. Thank you for helping him achieve that dream and so much more. Help children like Ori achieve their dreams by supporting the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County.

LOOKING BACK AT 2016 AND STEPPING FORWARD TOGETHER This time of year finds us basking in warm memories of lovingly prepared seders with families and friends. Of course, as we read the Book of Exodus as well as the news, we are also reminded of all that has plagued our people, from throughout our history to the present day. But, from our vantage point, we are filled with hope and pride. Every day, we see how this remarkable community comes together to face today’s challenges and lay groundwork for our Jewish future. We see our rabbis, our leaders and community members working together across the usual segments of Jewish life with mutual respect. Because we know that, whatever our challenges, it is up to us, together, to fund and speak out for essential human services, for Jewish continuity, for security in Israel and for Jews worldwide. And we know that it will take all of us to fulfill our sacred responsibilities, through this year’s Annual Campaign and into the future. Just turn to our 2016 Annual Report at the end of this issue of Chai Life for a snapshot of the many ways our Federation and our agencies aid and transform the lives of our people near and far. We’re proud of our work over the past year, and we’re also excited to look ahead. Soon, we’ll be sharing some important new community developments in special needs, Israel engagement, a new demographic study and more. A Tr ansformative Gift from Leon and Toby Cooperman
Toby & Leon Cooperman Sinai Residences of Boca Raton Named in Their Honor The Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County has proudly shared the news of its recent magnanimous $10 million endowment gift from Toby and Leon Cooperman. The Coopermans are prominent benefactors to an array of Jewish causes, as well as to human and health care services, education and health research. Vital members of this community, the couple has maintained their residence at St. Andrews Country Club in Boca Raton for nearly 20 years. “Toby and Leon have raised the bar as a shining example of extraordinary compassion and commitment,” said Anne Jacobson, Federation Board Chair. “We are grateful for their confidence in our Federation’s 37-year record of galvanizing this community to provide resources for critical programs and services. The Cooperman endowment through our Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation will have tremendous impact today, and be part of their legacy for generations.”
“This transformative gift to our community will provide significant income to meet essential Jewish needs through our Federation’s Annual Campaigns,” said Matthew C. Levin, Federation President and CEO. “We are proud to be among the distinguished institutions through which Toby and Leon, renowned longtime leaders in Jewish philanthropy, have invested in our people.” The Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County joins an array of major Cooperman beneficiaries including, in New Jersey, the Cooperman College Scholars Program, Cooperman Family Fund for a Jewish Future and St. Barnabas Hospital. They are also prominent supporters of their alma maters in New York City: Hunter College, where they met, and Columbia University, where Leon earned his MBA. Revenue generated by the Cooperman gift will also provide ongoing support to PJ Library® of South Palm Beach County, extending their generosity that has been instrumental in bringing this Jewish family engagement program to our area. In honor of the couple’s generosity and commitment to South Palm Beach County, the new 650,000-squarefoot, state-of-the-art luxury Continuing Care Retirement Community on the Federation campus, has been named the

Leon Cooperman is a Forbes 400 Member, Founder and Chairman of Omega Advisors, Inc. and Former Chairman and CEO of Goldman Sachs Asset Management. After raising their two sons, Toby worked for 35 years as a learning specialist, consultant and school administrator on behalf of neurologically impaired children. Proud of their heritage, they often cite their Jewish upbringing as the basis of their philanthropy by quoting the Talmud, “A man’s net worth is measured not by what he earns, but rather what he gives away.” Leon and Toby are signers of the Giving Pledge, initiated by Warren Buffett in “an effort to help address society’s most pressing problems by inviting the world’s wealthiest individuals and families to commit to giving more than half of their wealth to philanthropy.” And in 2015, Leon was inducted into the Horatio Alger Society for having overcome his humble beginnings to achieve success on Wall Street and for his commitment to philanthropy and higher education. “The fact that Toby and I are even candidates to make the Giving Pledge is a testimony to the American Dream, and we have a moral imperative to give others the opportunity to also pursue it by sharing our financial success,” said Leon, whose parents emigrated from Poland and raised him in a small apartment in the Bronx where he attended public schools. “My father was a plumber who worked six days a week. 400+ VOLUNTEERS. 17 PROJECTS. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! More than 400 volunteers of all ages from throughout South Palm Beach County’s Jewish community fanned out across the area on Sunday, December 18. Together, they made a difference for those in need at 17 hands-on projects. Whether the volunteers prepared food for the hungry, wrapped gifts, gardened, played games or did crafts with children or seniors, or much more, everyone was inspired and energized by joining with the full vibrant diversity of their Jewish community to help their less fortunate neighbors. The day closed with a spirited recap and concert in Zinman Hall, featuring Josh Nelson, one of the most popular performers and composers in today’s Jewish music scene. Making good on their promise to build community, Nelson and his band’s high-energy, captivating and deeply moving music was the perfect cap to an extraordinary day. The concert crowd also heard about how much good is done by the Federation and its community partners every day, from Matthew C. Levin, Federation President & CEO, and Rabbi Josh Broide, who directs the Center for Jewish Engagement. The day was an innovative local extension of Jewish Unity Day, the global phenomenon that emerged to continue and strengthen the overwhelming sense of unity experienced by the Jewish world in coming together over the kidnapping and murder of three boys, Naftali, Gilad and Eyal, on their way home from school in Israel during the summer of 2014. Jewish CommUNITY in Action Day was presented by the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County and its Deborah and Larry D. Silver Center for Jewish Engagement (CJE). BUILDING LEADERS & COMMUNITY A new group of 21 women and men representing local agencies and synagogues as well as our Federation were welcomed to JCLI this fall. They’re learning and growing with local and international experts, sharing perspectives on Jewish leadership and values as well as issues affecting 21st century Jewish communal life. To date, they’ve explored: “Finding our Leadership Models in the Bible” with Rabbi Lauren Berkun of Shalom Hartman Institute; “Reaching the Jewish Community of the 21st Century” with Rabbi Sid Schwarz of Clal: The National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership; and “Levels of Leadership through a Jewish Lens,” with Dr. Leon Weissberg; as well as “Lay Leader and Board Relations” and “Continuing the Journey with Adaptive Leadership” with Ellen Kagen Waghelstein, of the Georgetown Leadership Program. RABBIS DAN LEVIN AND JOSH BROIDE LEARNING TOGETHER IN PRESTIGIOUS SHALOM HARTMAN FELLOWSHIP From Reform and Orthodox traditions, two local rabbis are well into their first year of learning together in Shalom Hartman Institute’s sixth Rabbinic Leadership Initiative (RLI). Dan Levin, Senior Rabbi at (Reform) Temple Beth El of Boca Raton, and Rabbi Josh Broide, a practicing Orthodox rabbi who serves as Federation’s Director of Community Engagement, began the three-year intensive fellowship this past summer. In Jerusalem and at home, they are immersed in the highest levels of Jewish learning to equip them to meet contemporary challenges. e m a n My is Sarah I’m nine years old and live in Boca Raton. I have a brother and sister. Lots of my friends from school go to Jewish camps in the summer. I asked my Mommy and Daddy if they could send me to camp, but they said it cost too much money. Then we got a scholarship and I was able to go to camp with my sister! I had the best time. I was so lucky to have fun for a whole month. I practiced guitar and helped other kids play. I made new friends and learned more about the Jewish customs and traditions. The food was great and we celebrated Shabbat, which I loved. Thank you for this wonderful gift! The Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County and its beneficiary agencies provide scholarships to children attending Jewish summer camp. KDS MISSION EXPLORES ARGENTINA Campaign Chair Larry Feldman and his wife Diane, our King David Society Chairs Judi and Allan Schuman, and Sr. VP, Campaign, Jennifer Koenig have just returned from JFNA’s exclusive KDS Mission to Argentina, home to the largest Jewish population in Latin America and a hub of Jewish life for more than 150 years. They toured dazzling historic sites and idyllic vineyards, and celebrated Purim. They attended memorial ceremonies for the Israeli Embassy and the AMIA community center bombings. They visited thriving Jewish communities and engaged with leaders charting a bright course for Argentina’s future. And they saw in person the difference our Federations have made in recoveries from economic crisis and the worst terrorist attack against the Jewish people in the Western Hemisphere.

Major Gifts Event A record-breaking crowd of 400 top Federation donors filled the room at The Polo Club on November 29 for a sophisticated evening of depth and inspiration. They enjoyed a cocktail reception, an elegant dinner and two powerful speakers at this season’s annual Sandler Family Major Gifts Event. Named for Phyllis & Harvey Sandler and their family, the evening celebrated Federation’s major donors, who contribute a minimum $10,000 to our Federation’s Annual Campaign. And this year, the longstanding premier event in local Jewish philanthropy was aptly held on “Giving Tuesday, the Global Day of Philanthropy.” Co-chaired by Ellie & Martin Lifton and Jill & Michael Rose, the evening celebrated the group’s generosity while highlighting some shining stars. Federation’s Ketubah Society Hall of Fame posters were on display, recognizing those who have demonstrated a cumulative financial commitment of $1 million or more during the Federation’s 37 year history. During the evening, Toby and Leon Cooperman, and Judi and Allan Schuman, were welcomed to the prestigious society. The Coopermans’ recent transformative endowment to the Federation will aid in funding vital programs and services for generations to come. The Schumans were celebrated for their extremely generous recent endowment and creation of the Judi and Allan Schuman Center for Israel Engagement at the Federation. With poignancy and power, Jerry Silverman, President & CEO of Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) brought home the Federation’s critical work, and the generosity of the major donors. The audience was riveted as The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, recent former Prime Minister of Canada, laid out how and why he has been an outspoken defender of the Jewish homeland on the world stage. His affirming and inspiring presentation avowed the importance of Israel as the only enduring, unquestionable U.S. ally, and the only country anchored in freedom, democracy and the rule of law in their dangerous region. Harper also condemned the rise of a mutated anti-Semitism couched in terms that scapegoat Israel.

Continuing to prove that philanthropy can build strong relationships among younger major donors through fun as well as serious business, our Emerging Jewish Philanthropists (EJP) opened their season with an outreach event at the home of Gayle and Chuck Lichtman. After a warm welcome from EJP Co-Chairs Michele and Larry Blair, they heard from Professor Eric Trager, an expert on Egyptian politics. The author of Arab Fall: How the Muslim Brotherhood Won and Lost Egypt in 891 Days, Trager provided an in-depth briefing and responded to an extensive array of questions in a spirited discussion. New Year’s Eve found them at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, welcoming in 2017 with Billy Joel in concert. Beforehand, they enjoyed cocktails, food, and each other’s company in the VIP Club area, celebrating and getting ready for the stellar show.

After the Sandler Family Major Gifts Event, they questioned JFNA President & CEO Jerry Silverman about an array of Federation system topics including engagement of younger generations in Federation work and philanthropy. I’m 92 years old and live in Delray Beach with my wife Malka, who is 90. We are Holocaust survivors who lost our family during the war and built a new life together in America, where we’ve been happily married for 70 years. Over the years, Malka became frail and recently started to lose her eyesight and memory. I continued to care for her, despite my own health challenges. I became overwhelmed and didn’t know where to turn for help. Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services, a beneficiary agency of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, came to our aid, providing an incredible amount of resources and support. Thanks to JFS, we now have help at home, transportation, nutritious meal deliveries and more. Most importantly, we are able to live in comfort and dignity in our own home. For that we are so grateful. Help others like Meyer and Malka live a life in dignity by supporting the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County.

As soon as the lights went down, the energy spiked way up – and that’s where it stayed throughout the night at Boca West Country Club on March 1. THE EVENT 2.0 may have been called Federation Unplugged, but the night ran on the spirit and power of the more than 500 adults of all ages who came together to celebrate our remarkable Jewish community’s commitment and generosity. For a fifth year, THE EVENT 2.0 brought Federation supporters together from across South Palm Beach County’s vibrant diversity, for one shared purpose: to celebrate all the good we do together and get inspired to do even more for those who depend on us. Once again, they heard compelling stories from people onstage whose lives have been changed through their compassion and generosity. They cried as Judith, whom they’d met on the same stage four years ago, and her grandchildren showed them how the community’s support has brought stability and enrichment to their family since she suddenly became guardian of five teenagers. They cheered as Shira and her brother, Josh, described his special needs Birthright trip. And they rose to their feet as, with sirens and flashing lights, Gavy brought an ambucycle onto the stage and explained how broadly and effectively the fully equipped emergency vehicle donated recently by Federation, and others like it, are responding to emergencies and saving lives in Israel. They also heard powerful words throughout the evening from co-chairs Kathy & Ken Green and Mara & Michael Shapiro, and from Campaign Chair Larry Feldman about the importance of the work we do together in our community, in Israel and around the globe where we are needed most. This year the audience was thrilled to welcome back home and to the stage Brett Ratner, a Miami Beach native who is now the sixteenth highest grossing film director in history with more than $1 billion in career box office sales. With his mother, his rabbi and his longtime mentor in the audience, Ratner fully lived up to his reputation for mesmerizing and inspiring audiences with his haimish journey from Miami dreamer to Hollywood mogul and action-packed, comedic delivery - as well as for his commitment to Jewish history, culture, values, security and philanthropy.

FROM BOARDROOM TO GAME ROOM, FEDERATION MEN ARE MAKING THEIR MARK Men of all ages who care about the community and the Jewish people as well as about great times have already come together for three high-interest Men’s Division evenings this season. Launching their season at Silverball Museum in Delray Beach in November, they had a blast challenging each other with friendly pinball battles and skeeball shootouts while networking amid the finest camaraderie. In January, they enjoyed a Men’s Night Out Poker and Casino Night at The Addison in Boca Raton. They welcomed familiar faces and lots of new ones at tables that included a Texas Hold ‘Em tournament, craps, blackjack and plenty of socializing. Of course, they also enjoyed a delicious buffet and drinks.

he Lion’s pride roared loudly with 430 compassionate, generous women at the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County’s annual Lion of Judah Luncheon at the Polo Club on January 11. Inspiring and elegant, the celebration of our Lions’ philanthropy and its impact was headlined by accomplished businesswoman, fundraiser, philanthropist and documentary filmmaker Nancy Spielberg, and chaired by Wendy Koolik and Carole Sue Lebbin-Spector.
The endowed Lions lost over the past year were remembered with a moving candle lighting ceremony, and a special tribute to Ellen R. Sarnoff, a past Women’s Philanthropy and Federation Board Chair.
The luncheon also honored the community’s 65 new Lions, as well 33 increased-level Lions, and celebrated the more than 45 years as one of the country’s largest prides. Further recognized were the nine Lions forever who endowed their annual gifts in the past year – bringing the total of local Lion of Judah Endowments to 283. South Palm Beach County has long led with the largest number of LOJEs in any community in the country.
With introspection, inspiration and humor, Nancy Spielberg, the luncheon’s keynote speaker and another proud Lion of Judah, spoke warmly and openly about her highly creative family, as well as her Jewish and career journeys.

YAD GIVES BACK Young Adults Give Back Throughout the Community YAD’s new Social Action Committee has been busy giving back all over the community. They packed Thanksgiving boxes for clients of the Jacobson Family Food Pantry, and helped JFS serve an elegant Thanksgiving lunch to hundreds of local seniors and others who would otherwise go without. And YAD was in full force at hands-on helping projects for Jewish CommUNITY in Action Day! YAD also brightened Hanukkah for children in need at JAFCO. Young families decorated jewelry boxes, picture frames and menorahs for them, and YAD Board members delivered all the toys the crowd brought to YAD’s Blue & White Hanukkah Party.
YAD LEARNS They’re Cooking, Painting, Meditating and Off to India The season’s first YAD Kosher Cooking Class with IT’S Kosher Catering at Premium Kitchens was a sold-out success amid the smell of warm baked apple roses, going hands-on into delicious recipes, and a great night with old and new friends. Young women spent a Paint and Wine Night at Uptown Art creating beautiful hamsas. They also enjoyed a morning of mindfulness, meditation and yoga with Shirly Gilad to kick off the new year. And, at the other side of the world, three of our National Young Leadership (NYL) cabinet members, Zev Herman, Bryan Drowos and Shayna Chazin, traveled through India with the NYL Study Mission. They learned about the Jewish community’s rich history as well as its challenges and how they are being addressed with Federations’ help. YAD 365 Gives Back Throughout the Year With a $365 gift to Federation’s 2017 Annual Campaign, young adults will know they are helping their Jewish family near and far, where and when it’s most needed. And payments can be spread throughout the year. Starting with a rousing night of pinball, skee ball and other arcade games, YAD 365 members get to enjoy some special times together. Crowds Head for Lively Happy Hours and Day at the Dolphins YAD Happy Hours keep connecting hundreds of South Palm Beach County’s young Jewish adults - to our community, our people and each other – at some of the area’s hottest spots. Just this season, they’ve gathered at Tap 42, Uncle Julio’s (with a mannequin challenge!) and Blue Martini. They also headed to the newly refurbished Hard Rock Stadium for a sold out YAD Day at the Dolphins.
Young Adults Light Up Atlantic Ave. with Hanukkah Spirit Another record-breaking crowd of young adults spent Saturday night, December 17, at Honey Delray on Atlantic Avenue, getting into the Hanukkah spirit at the annual Blue & White Party. Arriving with gifts for children in need, they enjoyed drinks and seasonal treats, dancing, mingling, and more. This year, the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County’s Young Adult Division (YAD) joined forces with the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County’s NextGen for the event.

hat could be better when it’s hot outside than to keep cool in an ice cream or yogurt shop enjoying a frozen treat, crafts and some lively PJ Library stories? And what if those stories were read by rabbis and others from our area’s synagogues with time to chat informally with them and friends old and new? Last summer, crowds of children and families were taken with the idea, as seven of our Orthodox, Conservative and Reform synagogues partnered with PJ Library for weekly ice cream socials all around Boca and Delray. Library just keeps having fun and learning all around South Palm Beach County! Thousands of Jewish children and their families have been connecting at events large and small. So far this season they’ve had opportunities to learn about Rosh Hashanah, Sukkot, Chanukah, Tu B’Shevat, and Purim, Passover and Shavuot. They brought 120 pounds of food for the Jacobson Family Food Pantry and made packages, cards and decorations for Thanksgiving. On President’s Day, school was out, but PJ Library was in at their annual Bedner’s Farm President’s Day outing, where 450 people enjoyed a beautiful morning of PJ storytime, crafts, strawberry picking and hayrides. They’ve been to synagogues and agencies, parks, libraries, Barnes & Noble and Whole Foods. They even went to American Airlines Arena for Jewish Heritage Night on Chanukah and made hamantaschen at Winn Dixie. Families love being part of the vibrant Jewish PJ scene as well as the books and music they receive at home every month – and there’s always more to look forward to.

DAY SCHOOLS COLLABORATE FOR CHESED Once again, educators from South Palm Beach County’s diverse Jewish Day Schools collaborated to provide hands-on lessons about chesed for many hundreds of students. From Donna Klein Jewish Academy, Katz Hillel Day School and Torah Academy, the children learned more about the core Jewish value of kindness and responsibility toward those around us. It was the sixth consecutive year that the Federation’s local beneficiary day schools came together at the Federation for Chesed Day, and many students greeted friends from other schools. More than 500 students shared a morning partnering with friends new and old to decorate over 150 challah trays. The beautiful trays were given to Jacobson Family Food Pantry clients to enjoy at home with their Shabbat meals. At a later date, an additional 600 older students joined up to make Mishloach Manot “Character” Baskets for clients of JARC, Menorah House, JAFCO and Regents Park Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. CONGREGATIONAL TEACHERS FIND CONFERENCE A “GROWING” PROCESS Educators from throughout South Palm Beach County’s congregational schools came together for this year’s Congregational School Educators Conference. Honoring and recognizing teachers from the congregational schools in our area, this prestigious award is coordinated annually by the Federation’s Department of School Educational Services. Federation’s School Educational Services convenes Professional Council meetings of all Day School, Congregational School and Early Childhood Center heads, and offers an array of professional development programming for 500+ teachers.
SURVIVORS, STUDENTS OBSERVE HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY WITH PLAQUE DEDICATION With poignant tears, wistful smiles and powerful words, about 150 local Holocaust survivors, their loved ones, and students from Donna Klein Jewish Academy gathered with profound respect on January 27 to observe International Holocaust Remembrance Day with a program, Remember to Remember. Held in the Entin Holocaust Pavilion at the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, the program, unveiled and dedicated the new Plaques of Remembrance recently mounted in the Pavilion, that feature photos of local survivors. The program was presented by the Child Survivors/Hidden Children of the Holocaust of Palm Beach County, in cooperation with March of the Living (MOL) and the Federation. MYRNA & DAVID GROSS HONORED AT KRISTALLNACHT FILM FORUM Commemorating the 78th anniversary of the event considered the start of the Holocaust and raising funds for March of the Living, the 15th annual Kristallnacht Film Forum (KFF) showcased the compelling Holocaustrelated feature, “Buried Prayers.” Between two sold out screenings in Zinman Hall, Myrna & Dr. David Gross were honored at a moving ceremony and donor reception.

MOL DEDICATES HOLOCAUST TORAH Thanks to the generosity of the Chazin family and the Helen and Irving Spatz Family Foundation, the March of the Living has purchased a Holocaust Torah, which will accompany our March of the Living groups each year on their trip to Poland and Israel, including the March from Auschwitz to Birkenau. At a dedication ceremony at the Federation, the Chazin and Spatz families helped complete the writing of the Torah and celebrated with the 2017 March of the Living student and adult participants. RON GALLATIN OPENS INDUSTRY ICON SERIES
B&P launched the latest season of its Lewis Katz Industry Icon Series on October 28 over breakfast with Ron Gallatin. The former Managing Director of Lehman Brothers Inc., the pioneering Gallatin was responsible for a series of financial innovations, most notably Zero Coupon Treasury Receipts, Money Market Preferred Stock (and the resulting Auction Rate Securities Market) and Targeted Stock. Following a premium networking session, Gallatin, who, with his wife Meryl, is also a prominent local philanthropist, took the podium before an enthusiastic crowd. He shared his unique business and philanthropic journey, including how he has leveraged his business acumen to create the nonprofit Hands on Tzedakah and other charitable projects to fill critical gaps in the human services safety net locally and in Israel.

Arthur Adler, pro sports marketing icon and philanthropic leader who is locally prominent for founding the Boca West Charitable Foundation, headlined the second Lewis Katz Industry Icon event on January 25. Adler was a leading entrepreneur in the media and sports industries for four decades, serving as Co-President of the New York Yankees, and as Vice President of Marketing for both the Yankees and Islanders. Adler’s fascinating career also took him from producing albums for legends such as the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Aretha Franklin at Columbia Records in the 1960s to running his own sports marketing companies. Before a crowd in Zinman Hall at the Federation, he shared many entertaining anecdotes. Spanning a wide array of fields from long-timers to newcomers, the professionals and entrepreneurs gathered in Zinman Hall on the Federation campus appreciated the unique opportunity to hear Adler, as well as to build their businesses while helping others through Federation. L
ongtime donors to Federation’s Annual Campaign, Edith and Albert Haimes have paved a fresh giving path in their new home at the Toby & Leon Cooperman Sinai Residences of Boca Raton. The couple became the first Sinai residents to designate a portion of their entry fee as a legacy gift to our Federation through the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation. After his counterintelligence stint in Germany during WWII, Al met Edie as a student in Boston, where they married and raised three children. With Al’s retirement in 1985, they became “snowbirds,” first at Boca Pointe, and then in Highland Beach, from where they moved with several friends to full-time life at Sinai. The couple quickly connected with our Federation, and got involved with their club and communities’ campaigns. “We had always given to CJP in Boston, so it was just the right thing to do,” Al says. Federation has always been one of their foremost beneficiaries, among an array of causes including several in Israel. Now, Edie and Al have made a commitment to this community’s future, as well. “There are Jewish people who cannot pay for life’s essentials right around us,” says Al. “Federation takes care of our people in so many ways, from schools to help for seniors.” The couple knows the importance of role models in philanthropy. Not raised in a family with a philanthropic mindset, Al credits the example of relatives for his generosity. Edith says, “We would be happy to see our gift inspire others at Sinai Residences to think in the same direction.”

fter meeting on a Federation mission to Israel as young professionals in Chicago, Jill and Michael Rose embarked on a shared life dedicated to family, Jewish leadership and philanthropy. Arriving in Boca Raton ten years ago with three children and a wealth of experience, they quickly immersed themselves in local Jewish life, extending their efforts and generosity to several organizations. At our Federation, where they are King David Society donors to the Annual Campaign, Jill has been JCRC Co-Chair and is now Vice Chair of Campaign for Women’s Philanthropy. Michael was Vice Chair of Planning & Allocations and chaired its Education Task Force, and has held leadership roles at Boca Raton Synagogue, Katz Hillel Day School and Katz Yeshiva High School. To help ensure the future of these organizations, Jill and Michael recently made legacy gifts to all four organizations through the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation. “We believe in their missions and their contributions to the future of Jewish life and leadership,” says Michael. Jill found it easy to perpetuate her Federation gift forever by establishing a Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE) through her IRA. Also a LOJE in Chicago, she says, “I believe in investing in the Federation, knowing my gifts will be far more powerful when combined with others to reach people most in need.” Knowing how good it feels to have made their legacy commitment, Michael and Jill explained that their gift helps ensure that the organizations they support today will be able to meet the demographic and financial challenges of tomorrow.

GUIDING OTHERS IN GIVING FOR THE FUTURE

or Laurence “Larry” Blair, the value of giving back was instilled at a young age, as he observed his parents’ involvement in their Federation in New York. Fast forward a few decades and Larry is a leader at the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, where he chairs the Professional Advisory Committee (PAC) of the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation (JJCF). He and his wife, Michele, also chair Federation’s Emerging Jewish Philanthropists (EJP) cadre of younger donors. A shareholder at Greenspoon Marder, and certified in Wills, Trusts & Estates Law, Larry is dedicated to planned giving and helps structure gifts to charities. Thanks to this longstanding commitment to personal and corporate philanthropy, he received the 2017 Irving Eckhardt Mitzvah Society Award. “The Mitzvah Society recognizes trust and estates attorneys, financial advisors and CPAs for assisting clients with the identification and implementation of charitable planning as part of their financial, tax and estate plans,” Larry explains. “The JJCF is the future of our community. We have a generation of older donors that are passing with a significant amount of wealth. PAC helps those donors fulfill their philanthropic desires and guarantees that their charitable passions are passed on to the next generation.” “Larry is tremendously passionate about his work for JJCF and Federation,” says JJCF Chair Richard Steinberg. “He works tirelessly to facilitate his clients’ philanthropic goals while securing a brighter Jewish future for generations to come.” Larry’s traveled on several Federation and PAC missions -- to Israel, Russia and Cuba – and values those opportunities to meet recipients and witness Federation dollars making a difference. “I’ll never forget visiting Moscow, where we played basketball with children in a Jewish summer camp, and this was their first connection to Judaism and Israel,” he recalls. “We are truly helping to build the future of the Jewish community, and I’m honored to be part of that.” Larry has a special relationship with seniors. “It’s easy to forget that there are people with no food, living below the poverty line, without any support net,” he says. “My heart always goes out to them. I just can’t say no to helping.” He remembers his first time assisting an elderly lady with her estate plan. A single woman with no children, she feared she would die alone. Jewish Family Services came to her aid, organizing volunteers to visit and call to make sure she was okay. As part of her estate plan, she left a distribution to her local JFS so others could benefit from the programs that supported her when she had nobody to turn to. Larry’s passion to help others is shared by Michele, and their two children, Josh and Morgan. Larry received Federation’s James and Marjorie Baer Outstanding Young Leadership Award, and he and Michele received the Humanitarian of the Year Award from Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services, where he served as chair for four years and helped create the Shirley & Barton Weisman Delray Community Center and Jacobson Family Food Pantry.
KICKOFF TO A PAC’D SEASON The 2017 season hit the ground running at the Professional Advisory Committee (PAC) Kick-off and Membership Drive event. Members of the legal, accounting, investment advisory, and insurance fields packed the room at the Renaissance Boca Raton Hotel for a night of networking and socializing. A
s a child, Judi walked her Brooklyn neighborhood with her tiny grandmother and a blue Hadassah tin. “All I knew was that we were collecting money to help Jews,” she remembers.
Her husband, Allan, recalls the JNF tin in the small three-room apartment his family shared in the Bronx. “My father worked 12 hours a day in his butcher shop trying to make ends meet, but still my parents gave,” he recalls. Despite very modest upbringings and beginning married life in what Allan calls “the minus column,” as Judi puts it, “Helping just got into our blood and stayed there.” As their union thrived and prospered, they became able to help in ways they could not have imagined. One of these ways is their recent $1 million gift to our Federation to establish the Judi & Allan Schuman Center for Israel Engagement. Their groundbreaking gift will bring our community to Israel and Israel to our community by supporting missions, study and volunteering, expanding Israel programming, and more. Allan began his career at ECOLAB, working his way up to President, CEO and Chair of the Board, and relocating to the facility in Minneapolis/St. Paul. Moving to Delray Beach in 2004, the Schumans are Prime Minister Council donors to our Federation and members of our Ketubah Society. Judi has endowed her Lion gift with a LOJE, and together they have made a significant legacy gift to the Levis JCC. As local leaders, they’ve served in many capacities, currently chairing Federation’s King David Society. Judi is a Federation Vice Chair, and Allan chairs B&P’s INSPIRE mentoring program as well as FAU’s College of Business board. Judi chaired Women’s Philanthropy from 2014-16, and both serve on the Levis JCC Board. Their efforts have been recognized with the 2017 JFNA National Endowment Achievement Award, the 2015 Levis JCC Phyllis & Harvey Sandler Crystal Award, and as Polo Club’s 2015 Volunteers of the Year. Yet, the Schumans’ proudest achievement is how their children and grandchildren have followed their footsteps into philanthropy and Jewish life. Missions to Israel and across the globe have been instrumental to the couple’s philanthropy. Joining Federation’s Israel & Overseas Task Force Mission last fall was pivotal for Judi. “After personally touching so much of our work in Israel and seeing so many opportunities to connect people with our homeland, our gift to create the Center for Israel Engagement really began to take shape,” she says. “We are deeply concerned with keeping new generations involved,” says Allan. “To help Israel remain thriving and secure, we must keep Jewish life thriving and secure, and vice versa. ISRAEL & OVERSEAS TASK FORCE MISSION Highlights Federation’s Impact in Israel and Introduction to New Sister City Several Federation staff and lay leaders traveled on an Israel & Overseas mission to Israel last fall. Participants had the opportunity to visit multiple programs that Federation funds while meeting recipients and doing some hands-on volunteer work. Highlights included stops at Beit Elazraki, a home for at-risk children; Beit Issie Shapiro, Israel’s leading service provider for disabled children; Leket Israel’s logistics center for food rescue and packaging, where Federation partnered with Hands on Tzedakah to donate a new delivery truck; and United Hatzalah headquarters, where Federation dedicated a new ambuycle. The group also visited Shutaf, an informal education program for children and teens with special needs; Yashar Lachayal, which provides supplies to Israeli soldiers; the Onward Israel program of the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI), which will provide local Jewish youth with resumebuilding experiences in Israel; Yad LaKashish, a workshop for senior citizens and people with disabilities; and Susan’s House, an art center and meeting place for at-risk youth. “At Federation, our extended family in Israel is never far from our minds and hearts, and their well-being and security have always been vital to our mission,” said Eric Stein, Chair of the Israel & Overseas Task Force.
Participants also visited several potential sister cities and met local leaders to begin laying the groundwork for a successful new Partnership 2Gether (P2G) partnership. P2G is a JAFI program that brings Israeli and Jewish Diaspora communities together through unique projects and personal relationships. Upon our Task Force members’ return, the town of Zichron Yaakov was introduced as our Federation’s new sister city. “We were warmly welcomed and truly impressed with how compatible our two communities are,” said Task Force Vice Chair Gail Greenspoon, who traveled with Stein and Task Force members Mona Fleisig, Mandy Hurwitz (co-chair of the P2G Committee with Hal Klein) and Judi Schuman. “We saw a community as diverse in its Jewish life, as committed to caring for its residents, and as beautiful as our own. We returned home greatly inspired and eager to build bridges of friendship and understanding.” Located about 20 miles north of Haifa, Zichron Yaakov was founded in 1882 through the generosity of Baron Edmund de Rothschild. With a population of 25,000, the agricultural city is particularly popular with tourists for its rich history and contemporary culture, including botanical gardens and several local wineries such as Carmel, Tishbi and Binyamina.
JCRC HOSTS BRIEFINGS AT LEGISLATIVE SENDOFF As part of its advocacy efforts, our Federation’s Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) invited State Senators, Representatives and their staff to meet with Jewish community leaders prior to the 2016 legislative session in Tallahassee. They gathered on January 31 at the Shirley & Barton Weisman Delray Community Center for their annual Legislative Sendoff. JCRC Chair Matthew Kutcher stressed the vital role the legislators continue to play in the growing partnerships among state government, the Federation and its beneficiary agencies. Federation Board Chair Anne Jacobson explained, “For many decades a principal mission of our Federation has been to develop the financial resources needed to support programs for the elderly, for the hungry, for Holocaust survivors, and for those with special needs. Unfortunately, these needs exceed the resources we can develop on our own. Your support is critical to the welfare and survival of our elderly and infirm citizens and their families.” Bernie Friedman, Esq., who has lobbied in Tallahassee for the Florida Association of Jewish Federations for more than 25 years, pointed to successes of the past session and noted current concerns of a smaller projected state budget, and anticipated further diminished state resources over the next two years. Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services (JFS) President & CEO, Danielle Hartman expressed the dire need to sustain recurring funds JFS has been receiving for Holocaust assistance, and the importance of addressing local hunger and mental health issues. Jewish Association for Residential Care (JARC) Director of Program Services, Nancy Freiwald, thanked the legislators for their help in launching the successful new Community Works program, through which JARC clients are placed in outside supported employment. Andrea Kalkstein, an Associate Vice President at Federation, stressed the critical importance of government support for Federation Transportation Services (FTS), which provides essential door-to-door service for primarily low-income seniors and persons with disabilities. State Senator Kevin Rader, and State Representatives Lori Berman, David Silvers and Emily Slosberg all pledged their efforts to pursue and maintain funding for the agencies. Also represented were staff from the offices of Congressman Ted Deutch, State Senator Bobby Powell, and State Representatives Joseph Abruzzo, Bill Hager and Matt Willhite, as well as Christine Shaw, Executive Director of the Palm Beach County Legislative Delegation office. The JCRC will also lead a visit to officials in Tallahassee as part of its ongoing advocacy efforts throughout the legislative session.

1,000 VIEW YAD VASHEM HOLOCAUST EXHIBIT AT FEDERATION Approximately 1,000 people from throughout South Palm Beach County headed to the Federation to view a new multi-media Yad Vashem Holocaust exhibit from November 6-11. Proudly presented by the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County and its JCRC, the local installation of SHOAH: How Was It Humanly Possible - Telling the Story of the Holocaust: 1933-1945 in Zinman Hall marked only the third time the exhibit, which opened at the United Nations, had been shown in the United States. The exhibit opened with a reception for Federation’s King David Society, followed by a JCRC program for community leaders. The week then included public viewings free of charge, lessons for local Jewish day schools and congregational religious schools, and programs and tours for groups including: Federation’s Lions of Judah, Young Adult Division, Business & Professional Division, Professional Advisory Committee and staff, as well as residents of Stonebridge Country Club and the Toby and Leon Cooperman Sinai
Residences of Boca Raton. Dr. Marlene Yahalom, Director of Education for the American Society for Yad Vashem, which loaned the exhibit, and Dr. Leon Weissberg provided background and context at the programs and viewings. Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center located in Jerusalem, was established in 1953 by the Israeli Parliament. “I am delighted that our Federation made this extraordinary exhibit available, and proud of our role in planning and coordinating eleven programs which allowed approximately 1,000 residents of our community to view it,” said Matthew Kutcher, JCRC Chair. “Every group and individual, regardless of prior exposure to this dark period of Jewish and human history, left the exhibit deeply moved and highly sensitized to how such a horror could have been possible.” The Yad Vashem exhibit was generously underwritten by The Karp Family.
JCRC PARTNERS TO BRING HOLOCAUST EDUCATION TO PUBLIC SCHOOLS The Jewish Community Relations Council continues to partner with Palm Beach County Schools and the Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education at FAU to provide compelling programming for public school students. Most recently, groups of diverse students at Boca Raton and Atlantic Community High Schools were deeply engaged when Nathan Steven Montrose, who survived the Holocaust as a young child, shared his first-hand account at their schools.

DAY SCHOOLS DONNA KLEIN JEWISH ACADEMY (DKJA) • 561.852.3300 • www.dkja.org DKJA fifth-graders Rebecca Levy and Eva Gottesfeld competed at the FIRST® LEGO® LEAGUE competition in January and were presented with the Rising Star Award. This year’s event was the first at which DKJA was represented. Through the program, elementary and middle school students research a realworld engineering challenge, develop a solution and compete with LEGO-based robots of their own design. The premise is that imaginative thinking and teamwork build tomorrow’s innovators. Presented by First Inspires, this year’s event theme was Animal Allies. It was an
intense contest, including running at least three missions with each respective team’s robots and answering questions from judges about the project and technical aspects. Competitors also were judged on professionalism and focus. With adult coaches to guide them, teams (of up to 10 members) apply science, engineering and math concepts to develop solutions to realworld challenges. DKJA was coached by Elie Levy; Dr. Rebecca André, technology teacher and integrator; and Hilary Arenstein, principal of grades K-5.

A trip to the CROS Ministries offered a volunteer opportunity for “gleaning” fields -- collecting leftover produce which is donated to the Palm Beach County Food Bank and distributed to various food pantries. Teddy & Linda Struhl Elementary School students visited Menorah House and Sinai Residences to perform during the holidays. Students also practice daily acts of chesed through the EMET (Excellent Midot Every Time) program.

Recently, the 12th grade began an innovative program called S.A.V.E. (Senior Active Volunteer Experience), where each student participates in a program that allows them to give back to

During the second half of the year, students spend one afternoon each week volunteering at soup kitchens, homeless shelters, local Jewish schools and public schools, afterschool programs for underprivileged children, hospitals, nursing homes and a variety of other locations. Hillel students used their networks to connect to student groups and university departments, including the College of Engineering, to promote attendance. The remarkable attendance included many students who were not Jewish and knew little to nothing about Israel beyond the negative headlines. They visited displays from Israeli start-up companies, interviewed for internships and listened to a panel
discussion with CEOs of Israeli tech companies about how to start a business and why Israelis have been so successful in this field. While students came to pursue professional networking opportunities, they left with a true appreciation and understanding of “the other side” of Israel. Thanks to Hillel, both Jewish and non-Jewish students gained a better insight into Israel and had an experience that increased their professional skills and opportunities.

The Jewish Agency connected with 790,000 Diaspora Jews in 2016, through innovative programming such as Masa Israel Journey, Onward Israel, Birthright, Partnership2Gether projects, Campus Israel Fellows, and summer/winter programming for Jews in the former Soviet Union.
In 2016, more than 27,400 people made Aliyah, by choice or rescue. JAFI ensures that every Jew can call Israel home by providing hands-on guidance and financial assistance for a smooth transition to their new home. The Agency also maintains an Emergency Assistance Fund to help Jewish life thrive in areas where Jewish institutions are targets of violent attacks, allocating more than $3 million to 97 institutions in 36 countries.
The Jewish Agency also works within Israel to increase educational opportunities, close socioeconomic gaps, and form groundwork for systemic change. In 2016, 800 youth and teens at risk were educated at Youth Villages, and over 4,000 children and their families received guidance through Youth Futures.
Ethiopian National Project (ENP) • www.enp.org.il ENP works tirelessly, hand in hand with Federation, to ensure the full and successful integration of Ethiopian Jews into Israeli society. ENP was created by Jewish Federations as Diaspora Jewry’s tool to address the needs of Ethiopian-Israelis in partnership with the Government of Israel and the Ethiopian-Israeli community itself. The transformation ENP has succeeded in engendering is no less than extraordinary: scholastic gaps are closing, educational
performance is improving, risk situations are decreasing and empowerment is broadening with each passing year. Yet the need is still great for those not yet being touched by ENP’s work and who have been identified as being in dire need of ENP’s interventions. OVERSEAS AGENCIES Beit Issie Shapiro provides cutting-edge services to improve quality of life for people with disabilities including therapeutic and educational iPad solutions through the Federation-funded iAbility: Using Advanced Technology to Advance the Lives of Children with Disabilities.
Bet Elazraki Children’s Home for at-risk children referred by the welfare authority includes a now Federation-funded After School Tutorial Program for 160 children customized for each child or teen in Math, Hebrew, Grammar, English and Judaic Studies.
LEKET Israel rescues 39 million pounds of nutritional produce per year and distributes it to 35,000 needy families each week and nearly 95,000 people per day. In partnership with Hands on Tzedakah (HOT), Federation supported the donation of a refrigerated truck to increase the amount of food rescued.
Nirim Foundation, started by Israel’s Navy Seals, offers empowerment workshops with a second chance for atrisk youth. Federation support to Girls at Risk in Dimona provides 10 young women ages 14-18 at extreme risk with case managers and female empowerment workshops.
Shutaf provides a “reverse inclusion” leadership training program for 14-25 year olds, with (75%) and without (25%) disabilities, including vocational training and work opportunities to prepare young adults for successful adulthood.
United Hatzalah’s 3,200 trained volunteers respond to over 700 emergencies per day, providing emergency first response to 250,000 people each year. Federation supported the donation of an ambucycle (an ambulancemotorcycle) that will help further fill service gaps and improve immediate response times.
Yashar LaChayal’s Water Backpack Program provides IDF soldiers with free water backpacks to increase their effectiveness and decrease health-related issues. Federation funds provided 650 soldiers with water backpacks during the hot summer months.
Yad LaKashish trains 270 of Jerusalem’s low-income immigrant elderly as artisans who create gifts, jewelry and Judaica sold all over the world. They also receive financial assistance and food. South Palm Beach County funds are now provided through the Mollie Rosenthal Memorial Fund of the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation. 63 CHAILIFE

VISION Rooted in Jewish values, the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County seeks to inspire and galvanize local residents and organizations to build and sustain a strong, caring, vibrant Jewish community for today and tomorrow.
MISSION At the hub of the Jewish community, the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County strategically engages donors, supporters and community partners in addressing and planning for current and future needs of the Jewish people locally, in Israel and around the world. The Federation accomplishes these goals by: building Jewish community and developing Jewish communal leadership; promoting Jewish identity, education and engagement; caring for the vulnerable; advocating for the well-being and security of the Jewish people and standing with Israel, their spiritual homeland.

DEAR FEDERATION FAMILY: Our Federation. Our Community. Our World. For 38 years, the strength of our Federation has been reflected in our ability to galvanize this Jewish community in caring for our people, from our neighborhoods to across the globe. We are proud to report that, with wisdom and perseverance, compassion and creativity, 2016 has marked another strong year of growth. And, through this growth, we’ve taken some big steps forward to fulfill our mission both today and into the future. In terms of Financial Resource Development, 2016 saw our Annual Campaign grow for the fourth year in a row, to more than $15 million. Over $2 million was raised in new, increased and retrieved gifts. These and other increases mean that our Federation was able to help more of our people in more ways. Our growing list of 63 beneficiary agencies includes a number of recent additions, including eight innovative and effective nonprofits in Israel. Meanwhile, the assets of our Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation (JJCF) have grown to about $80 million, of which $14.5 million are unrestricted. During the past year, JJCF provided grants of nearly $4 million, including $1.8 million in support of the Federation’s Annual Campaign (inclusive of funds from unrestricted assets). As its second year draws to a close, the 15 local Jewish organizations and synagogues in JJCF’s Create a Jewish Legacy program have generated $55.74 million in expectancies for the future of this community. We are extremely fortunate to have welcomed two very substantial gifts to our expanding resources in the past year. Toby and Leon Cooperman’s magnanimous gift of $10 million named Sinai Residences. And Judi and Allan Schuman have contributed $1 million to establish and name our groundbreaking Center for Israel Engagement. On our campus, the Toby & Leon Cooperman Sinai Residences has opened and received Medicare certification for its Health Center components. Memory Care and Skilled Nursing Care are nearing capacity, and Assisted Living is not far behind. Independent Living remains 100% occupied, with a waiting list. Anyone who visits knows that Sinai offers quality of life surpassing any other senior living options. Also on our campus, Katz Yeshiva High School’s (KYHS) new facility is nearing completion. Soon, we will be the only community with two preschool through 12th grade tracks on one campus. Like our 2016 Jewish CommUNITY in Action Day that brought 2,000 of us to celebrate with a full array of local Jewish leaders at FAU, KYHS is yet another highly visible example of the ways our Federation serves as the hub of this vibrant, diverse Jewish community’s vital efforts that do so much for so many. ANNUAL CAMPAIGN FOR JEWISH NEEDS BUSINESS & PROFESSIONAL DIVISION (B&P). In its fifth year, the successful B&P Division continued the Lewis Katz Industry Icon events. The B&P Cabinet increased to 62 members and grew “Business Casual,” its signature networking series for women. B&P’s Inspire Mentorship Program completed a third year of building partnerships among our community’s seasoned and growing entrepreneurs. COUNTRY CLUB COMMUNITIES AND NEIGHBORHOODS. Committed leaders and volunteers once again showed their unwavering commitment. They educated and raised vital Annual Campaign funds from their friends, neighbors and acquaintances. Several clubs raised additional funds through the Adopt-a-Project program, and volunteered for handson mitzvah projects. MAJOR GIFTS. Major Donors, King David Society, Prime Minister’s Council and Ketubah Society members were celebrated at the Sandler Family Major Gifts Event featuring former Prime Minister of Canada, The Right Honourable Stephen Harper. At the event, Toby and Leon Cooperman were honored for their magnanimous gift to our community that named Sinai Residences of Boca Raton. Judi and Allan Schuman were honored for their extraordinary gift that established the Judi & Allan Schuman Center for Israel Engagement. King David Society donors had an intensive briefing with Irwin Cotler, Founder and Chair of the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights. Emerging Jewish Philanthropists (EJP) enjoyed events from private receptions with top speakers including Hollywood producer Brett Ratner, and Billy Joel in concert. MEN’S DIVISION. The Men’s Division continues to grow with successful events including a poker tournament and casino night, a Sip and Savor evening, and speakers on global Jewish causes. Men of all ages are enjoying enriching experiences together, developing new friendships and building a strong division of their own.

WOMEN’S PHILANTHROPY. With nearly 700 Lions of Judah, our pride is one of the largest in the country. Attendance at the annual Lion of Judah Luncheon neared 400. Women also heard speakers of substance at Education Days and Pomegranate events. Chapter Two, a program designed for women seeking to connect with the community, is completing its third year with great success, and there is a waiting list for the next class. There’s great energy in Women’s Philanthropy, with a place for everyone who wants to join in. YOUNG ADULT DIVISION (YAD). Through YAD, young Jewish adults came together to mix, mingle and make a difference. They had their annual Blue and White Chanukah party with 300+ in attendance and a kosher cooking series for Rosh Hashanah and Passover. They packaged food on Thanksgiving for those in need, packed local hot spots for happy hours with a philanthropic component, and hosted several YAD365 fundraising events. 60 DAYS OF IMPACT. This initiative rallied the local Jewish community to GIVE, VOLUNTEER & GET ENGAGED. More than 1,600 people contributed, 25% of whom were new donors to the campaign. Twenty events culminated in Super Sunday and Good Deeds Day. SUPER SUNDAY AND GOOD DEEDS DAY. 350+ volunteers from across the community kept the phones in Zinman Hall ringing out, with more than 1,500 calls raising nearly $440,000 during three spirited shifts. And across the campus at Katz Hillel Day School, 200 volunteers assembled over 30,000 kosher meals in an international Good Deeds Day project that helped stock the shelves of the Jacobson Family Food Pantry.
JACOBSON JEWISH COMMUNITY FOUNDATION A STRONG AND VIBRANT JEWISH COMMUNITY FOREVER. That’s the vision of the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation (JJCF) – to ensure the continuity of Jewish life locally and overseas through endowment funds, bequests and other legacy gifts. Today, the Foundation’s unrestricted assets have grown to over $14.5 million while total assets are about $80 million. During the past year, the JJCF provided grants of almost $4 million, including $1.8 million in support of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County Annual Campaign, of which $600,000 were unrestricted assets. CREATE A JEWISH LEGACY. Create a Jewish Legacy (CJL) continues to enjoy remarkable success through its participation in the Harold Grinspoon Foundation’s LIFE & LEGACY™ initiative, a four-year partnership that helps promote after-lifetime giving to benefit the Federation, day schools, synagogues, social service organizations and other Jewish entities through training and monetary incentives. As the second year draws to a close, 15 local Jewish organizations and synagogues have participated in educational workshops, resulting in 445 commitments from 339 donors, valued at an estimated $55.74 million. PROFESSIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE (PAC). Comprised of estate planning attorneys, accountants, financial planners and wealth advisors, the 120 members of the Professional Advisory Committee (PAC) encourage their clients to establish current and legacy charitable gifts through trusts, bequests, life insurance policies and donor advised funds. The Irving Eckhardt Mitzvah Society honors PAC members for their diligent work with their clients on behalf of the JJCF. Over $10 million in realized gifts have been secured by PAC members, and 76 members have been inducted into the Mitzvah Society. JEWISH WOMEN’S FOUNDATION (JWF). As a forum for informed Jewish philanthropists, the Jewish Women’s Foundation (JWF) raises and directly allocates their own funds to special programs for women and children. Since its inception 14 years ago, JWF has granted over $1 million to over 45 organizations locally, in Israel and abroad. LION OF JUDAH ENDOWMENT (LOJE). Our Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE) effort ensures that a woman’s annual Lion gift will be made in perpetuity, in her name through a legacy gift. During the past year, 13 more women became LOJE members, bringing the total in South Palm Beach County to 289 – the largest of any community in North America. Currently, the value of Lion of Judah Funds is about $10 million, with another $18 million in commitments for future Lion of Judah Endowments.

PLANNING TO MEET NEEDS LOCALLY AND OVERSEAS
Central to this community’s well-being, growth and sustainability is our Federation’s commitment to its historic role of convening the community in planning for the current and future needs of our neighbors and our global Jewish family. Through our Program Funding Council (PFC) and its Task Forces, dedicated lay and professional leaders assess the pressing local and international Jewish needs, and identify programs and services to enhance the well-being of Jewish people and strengthen our Jewish future. After analyzing these needs, members recommend funding allocations they have determined are best to address them.
THE PFC TASK FORCES AND THEIR AREAS OF CONCERN ARE: • Safety Net Services – life-sustaining assistance such as food, medical care, transportation; vulnerable populations including the elderly, children and adults with special needs, Holocaust survivors; mental health services, counseling • Jewish Day School Education – financial assistance for our four local Jewish day schools • Jewish Life & Learning – Jewish identity and culture; community relations; Israel and economic advocacy; financial assistance for summer camp, preschool, infant care; Jewish engagement for all ages • Community Outreach – engagement of local residents in Jewish community, spiritual and social experiences • Israel and Overseas – Through our historic global partners and new relationships, our dollars provide: lifesaving food, shelter, and medical assistance to elderly, holocaust survivors, children and families throughout Israel, Ukraine, and the Former Soviet Union; support to youth at risk in Israel to ensure their strong Jewish future; offer meaningful Jewish camp and educational enrichment experiences to children in Hungary and the FSU; build personal and community bridges across the globe with our new Partnership2Gether (P2G) sister city Zichron Yaakov; engage community members with our global Jewish family through MASA Israel programs, missions to Israel and other overseas Jewish communities.

DEBORAH & LARRY D. SILVER CENTER FOR JEWISH ENGAGEMENT (CJE) continues to create opportunities to unite our Jewish community’s residents and institutions. Jewish Unity Day featuring broad Jewish community leadership at FAU drew more than 2,000 people. Jewish CommUNITY in Action Day brought together more than 500 people to work together at 17 hands-on service projects followed by a community concert with Josh Nelson.
JEWISH COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP INITIATIVE (JCLI). Twentytwo lay leaders from local agencies, schools and synagogues joined the third group of Federation’s Jewish Community Leadership Institute (JCLI), sharing intensive, expert-led training sessions in preparation to further lead our Jewish community JEWISH COMMUNITY RELATIONS COUNCIL. As Federation’s public policy, community relations and advocacy arm, JCRC continued to engage and educate the community to support Israel, combat anti-Semitism, and learn the lessons of the Holocaust. Hundreds of local Jews and Christians attended a March of Remembrance Yom HaShoah program. JCRC’s annual Legislative Sendoff and Tallahassee trip focused on economic advocacy for seniors, Holocaust survivors, and persons with special needs. A Yad Vashem museum exhibit drew 2,000 viewers from across the community, and hundreds attended programming on the Israel/US relationship. JCRC also collaborated to bring Holocaust education programs to public high schools and a resource presentation to local survivors. CHAILIFE 76
MARCH OF THE LIVING. The March of the Living Holocaust education journey to Poland and Israel included 86 students from South Palm Beach County, and 74 adults on two buses. From March to Miriam continues to create “families” of students and local adults with local Holocaust survivors to provide support to the survivors and enrichment to all.
PJ LIBRARY®. More than 1,800 local families raising Jewish children in South Palm Beach County have been receiving Jewish books for their youngsters through the PJ Library - South Palm Beach County Partnership. This past year, more than 5,500 children, parents and grandparents enjoyed PJ Library activities around the community at over 50 venues. This year, more than 250 South Palm Beach County children ages 9-11 received books from PJ Our Way™, the next chapter of PJ Library. SCHOOL EDUCATIONAL SERVICES convenes Professional Council meetings of all Day School Heads, Congregational School Education Directors and Early Childhood Directors, and offers an array of professional development programming for 500+ teachers. Chesed Day once again brought 500+ day school students together to do a hands-on project to benefit the clients of the Jacobson Family Food Pantry, and an additional 600+ day school students to make Mishloach Manot “Character” Baskets to give to the clients of JARC, Menorah House, and JAFCO.
FEDERATION AFFILIATED CORPORATIONS FEDERATION TRANSPORTATION SERVICES (FTS). This past year, FTS provided more than 56,000 trips to over 350 seniors and clients with disabilities who would otherwise not have free transportation to vital and life-sustaining activities. Their many destinations include doctors’ offices, grocery stores, pharmacies, hot meal sites, places of worship, and popular locations for a monthly field trip. FTS also transports Donna Klein Jewish Academy students to offsite school activities, as well as Adolph and Rose Levis JCC campers to many activities. JEWISH COMMUNITY FACILITIES CORPORATION. This subsidiary of the Federation continued its successful safe operation and management of the entire 100-acre campus— the largest Jewish Federation campus in the country. The sprawling property, including the Toby & Leon Cooperman Sinai Residences of Boca Raton, and Katz Yeshiva High School of South Florida near completion, features more than 1 million square feet of building space, with four schools, two highly-rated HUD senior living facilities, JARC apartment residences, office buildings, adult day care, training, cultural and recreational facilities. FEDERATION CCRC DEVELOPMENT, LLC. This independent separate entity is a not-for-profit LLC solely owned by the Federation. It actively governs, and oversees the operation of the Toby & Leon Cooperman Sinai Residences of Boca Raton. This vibrant, modern and luxurious 650,000 square foot Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), celebrating its first anniversary, occupies 23.5 acres on the Federation campus. Sinai Residences includes 234 Independent Living units, 48 Assisted Living units, 60 full nursing units, and 24 memory support units. Independent Living residences are currently 100% occupied, with a waiting list established, and Health Care is now fully operational.

*NOTE: Jewish Community Facilities Corporation (“Facilities Corp”), a separate 501c2 entity, and a subsidiary of the Federation, operates and manages the 100-acre campus with over 300,000 square feet of building space. In Fiscal 2015-16, Facilities Corp. funded over $5 million to operate the campus, of which $3 million is attributable directly to the campus beneficiary agencies. The agencies assumed $2 million of that cost, and Facilities Corp. absorbed the remaining $1.1 million on their behalf, plus the additional $2.4 million campus-wide costs. *See list of all beneficiaries on pages 80 and 81.

The Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation (JJCF) combined assets under management are approaching $80 million. These include $53.4 million in net assets plus $22.6 million held by JJCF as custodian for local agency and synagogues. This past year, JJCF provided grants totaling over $4 million to more than 350 local, national and international organizations, including over $1.8 million in grants in support of our Federation’s Annual Campaign. JJCF seeks to create a strong philanthropic culture of planned giving throughout our community by partnering with fifteen local Jewish institutions and synagogues.
