reshly landed from Charlotte, North Carolina on the One happy island, as it is called by the locals, we traveled by limo to the Radisson Aruba Resort, Casino & Spa, one of the island’s luxury hotels. It recently completed a $30 million renovation and offers brand-new facilities surrounded by enchanting lagoons, fragrant gardens and beautiful, cascading waterfalls. The Radisson is located right on the pristine white sand Palm Beach, one of the nicest beaches on the island. I always wanted to visit Aruba, and after hearing all the stories from friends and reading about ǡ ϐ Ǥ by the downtown of Aruba’s capital, Oranjestad, in front of the luxury stores Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Gucci and many more awaiting high-end shoppers after a day at the beach. Immediately upon my arrival in my suite facing the Atlantic Ocean, I decided to try the turquoise water and I was not disappointed. It was 85 degrees, blue like in the brochure and since I was there in the summer, not too busy. Home to one of the “Top 10 Beaches in the World,” Aruba, which covers 70 square miles, is located on the outside fringes of the Hurricane Belt in the heart of the southern Caribbean, 15 miles north of Venezuela. The sun shines in Aruba year-round, and the island boasts a constant 82 degrees Fahrenheit temperature. Low humidity and refreshing east trade wind breezes make this Island an attractive destination. The Aruba Tourism Authority invited us for dinner at one of Aruba’s best restaurants, The Old Man and the Sea. It is located on the Savaneta coastline, and its owners, Osyth Henriquez and son Jonathan Vieira, have demonstrated their artistic wave of creativity to transform a private residence into an exclusive hideaway in the Caribbean, perfect for a special dinner. Hand-painted menu covers, comfortable cushioned lounge areas and intimately lit tables amidst the moving palm trees make it the perfect spot to enjoy the view of the sunset or the starry sky. ϐ ǡ the fresh catch of the day to quality meats imported from distributors across the globe. I had a great culinary experience, tasting one of the best lobsters I ever had as well as the delicious local Bouillabaisse soup and the giant shrimp cocktail. Beyond the turquoise waters and sun-kissed, sandy shores exists the real Aruba. This is why our hosts planned for the next day fabulous ATV riding and scuba diving experiences. We left early for the Arikok National Park with our four-wheel ATVs. Sprawling across nearly 20 percent of the island’s landmass, government-protected Arikok National Park is an exciting playground for visitors seeking something more than a traditional day on the beach. Arikok National Park is home to many hidden beaches, natural bridges, historical ϐ ǡ rattlesnakes, burrowing owls and blue whiptail lizards. This actionpacked ATV trip took us over canyons and jagged rocks, dodging cacti while exploring the rugged beauty of the island’s northern shore. We made stops at the California Lighthouse, the Gold Mill Ruins as well as at the island’s most stunning sights — Baby Beach, the Guadirikiri Caves and Conchi natural pool, a “must see” and “must swim” place with breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. In the afternoon, we focused on scuba diving. For many, spending tranquil days basking and relaxing in the unending sunshine is the highlight of their Aruba vacation. But beyond the beaches, adventure-seekers will discover one happy island full of invigorating land and sea activities.

Good visibility, several shallow reefs and captivating shipwrecks give snorkelers an array of options. Most sites are on the southern or leeward coast. Slightly north of Palm Beach, Catalina Bay and Arashi ǡ ǡ ϐ ǡ ϐ ǡ ǡ barracudas and an occasional octopus. The island boasts more than 20 dive spots, ranging from 20 to 100 feet, including the Shipwreck of the Antilla, one of the most popular spots for snorkelers and divers alike. At 400 feet, it is the largest shipwreck dive in the Caribbean. A well-kept-secret dive spot, the SS Pedernales, was a World War II lake tanker that was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat en ϐ Ǥ remains submerged off the shore of Palm Beach, approximately 25 feet below sea level. My short Aruba weekend ended on a high note with a trip to a local rum shop. Locals and tourists alike are invited to sit at the ϐ ǯ oldest traditions: enjoying an ice-cold beer at an open-air rum shop. An old Aruban bar in its purest form, these quick in-and-out bars ϐ tradition. Local rum shops are scattered throughout the island, but classics include White Star, Essoville and Aruba Rum Shop located in San Nicolas, the Sunrise City. Aruba is the most revisited destination in the Caribbean, with more than half of all visitors returning year after year. I promised myself to return to this incredible island to continue my island adventures and discover more of Aruba’s untold stories. Issue 6 . 2013

top n less than a month, two of the largest fairs for modern and contemporary art will take place in South Florida: Art Basel Miami Beach and Art Miami. They happen during Miami Art Week, which brings over 30 fairs and special events to the area. Art Miami, celebrating its 24th year, has been around longer, but “Basel,” as the art set call it, which launched in 2002, is the most important art fair in the country. Some of the world’s top art dealers spoke to Jetset Magazine about why these two fairs are so important and shared some insider information on how to navigate them. According to Miami-based gallerist Frederic Snitzer, there wouldn’t be a Miami

Leading art dealers share their thoughts on Art Basel Miami Beach and Art Miami By Joseph Manqueros and Jenifer Mangione Vogt Art Week without Basel. “If you were to remove Art Basel from the calendar in December, I’d guess that none of the other fairs would exist.” This is true because Basel is the most heavily vetted and competitive art fair in the U.S. and delivers the world’s most important galleries and artists. Spots do open, though, because not all galleries return. Snitzer, who serves on the Art Basel Miami Beach selection committee, explains, “It’s not a question of once you’re in, you’re in forever. Every gallery is reviewed for their proposal for that year. There are galleries that always have strong programs and they become anchors, but any gallery can be considered.”

This year, the prestigious Pace/MacGill Gallery will appear at ƒ•‡Ž ˆ‘” –Š‡ Ď?‹”•– –‹Â?‡Ǥ Š‡ ‰ƒŽŽ‡”› ‹• ƒŽ”‡ƒ†› ”‡…‘‰Â?‹œ‡† ĥ ‘Â?‡ ‘ˆ the world’s top photography galleries and represents heavyweight artists, including William Wegman, Chuck Close and Richard Misrach. Peter MacGill, who founded the gallery in 1983, says, “Art Basel Miami attracts museum directors, curators and collectors from all over the world. Because of that, it provides us with a great opportunity to share our artists’ work with a very broad, international audience.â€? With over 500,000 square feet of exhibition space, Basel can be overwhelming. What you need to know is that the fair is divided into sectors that bring to the foreground either established galleries and artists, or those that are emerging, as well as newer art forms, such as performance art and multimedia instillations. and if something brings you into the booth, it’s probably for good reason. It also gives the visitors a good opportunity to engage in a dialogue with the gallery about the work.â€? The preparation for Basel is intense. It’s not merely a matter of hanging work on booth walls. Most Basel booths are curated and extremely well planned. MacGill explains, “We usually begin our fair preparation six months ahead of time by making a model of the booth and scale reproductions of the work we are thinking of bringing.â€? And, though Pace/MacGill represents many midcareer and established artists, they’ll also showcase some not of the household variety, such as JoAnn Verburg, Henry Wessel, Paul Graham and Susan Paulsen. Art Miami follows Basel in terms of visitor count, gallery prestige and revenues. It’s actually three sister fairs that all include global galleries. Art Miami itself showcases 125 established galleries. The Perks of Staying Positive

caught a few minutes of the popular TV show Duck Dynasty the other day to see what all the hoopla was about. The hit reality series is just the opposite of about every other reality show out there. It’s a functional family whose members love each other, and, for all intents and purposes, seem happy. In fact, if you’ve seen the show, you’re likely familiar with the family’s patriarch, Phil Robertson, and his mantra, “happy, happy, happy.” This made me think of a book I read several years ago called The Happiness Advantage. The author, Shawn Achor, postulates that while our brains are hard-wired to perform at the highest levels when ǯ ǡ ϐ for putting off happiness. We’ve all done it. “When I land that new account, I’ll be happy.” “When I lose 10 pounds, I’ll be happy.” “When I get that big promotion, I’ll be happy.” The problem is that on the way to achieving those goals, we’re putting ourselves in a holding pattern that makes it harder to reach them.

TOMORROW’S SUN WILL RISE. UNTIL IT DOES, WE HAVE NO STAKE IN TOMORROW, FOR IT IS YET UNBORN.” Beyond putting off happiness ourselves, outside forces often combat happiness and positivity. We’ve all worked alongside negative people who are not only negative about work, but life outside of work as well . . . family, friends and society in general. It’s a draining experience, and unfortunately, negativity can be catching. After being around negative people, you can end up in a sour mood, feeling as if it’s you against the world. Another way negativity can creep in is when you dwell on the past or worry incessantly about the future. A wise person once said, “There are two days in every week about which we should not worry . . . yesterday with its mistakes and cares, its faults and blunders, its aches and pains. Yesterday has passed forever beyond our control. The other day we should not worry about is tomorrow with its possible adversities, its burdens, its large promise and poor performance. Tomorrow’s sun will rise. Until it does, we have no stake in tomorrow, for it is yet unborn.” While you can’t affect something that’s already happened, you can affect the perspective you take on it. And while there are many elements of your future you can’t control, you can decide to focus on those you can.

But there is light at the end of the tunnel, according to Achor and many others out there who study the effect of positivity on our lives. They theorize that we can actually train our brains to be more positive. For example, we can try to avoid tackling too many things at once. When we focus on small, manageable goals, we feel more in control. Another example involves turning failures into opportunities. If you think you had a great idea or solution for a customer, but he or she turned it down, that doesn’t mean you should just give up on it and assume it was a bad idea. Maybe the idea would work for another customer. You can spread positivity by not limiting yourself or others around you. One belief I’ve always adhered to in my company is that you never know where the next great idea will come from. It might be a new business idea from someone in the admin department or a new idea for how to streamline an internal process from someone on the creative team. That’s why I’m open to ideas from anyone in my company. In fact, some of the most inspired ideas I’ve received have come from the most unlikely sources. Autonomy is another factor that I believe breeds positivity in the workplace. When you’re given autonomy to do your job, you take responsibility for your actions and you feel more in control. I’m not talking about being a control freak, but focusing on those areas that we can control. Whatever your take is on happiness, there certainly seems to be some validity in the theory that positivity can give you a distinct advantage when it comes to attaining your goals in life. With all that can be achieved by thinking positively, the value of being “happy, happy, happy” is apparent. Phil Robertson may just be on to something with his now-famous mantra.

n my last article for Jetset, I set the stage for an overview of the advantages of paper assets. I wrote about the government’s policy on QE, FDR’s Executive Order 6102 and the thoughts of economists, past and present. Many believe that the markets are being manipulated to push us into doing what the government wants: holding paper wealth — in the form of U.S. dollars — as the “currency” of choice. As promised, Andy Tanner, my personal advisor on paper assets, will contribute his thoughts regarding the key advantages of paper assets and how investors can use them.

As Andy wrote in our last article ... Most people have a sense that successful business owners leverage the expertise, education, experience and efforts of many people. They also take advantage of the tax code. Moreover, people have a sense that real estate can use debt as a lever and create wealth relatively quickly. Additionally, there is a sense that commodities, especially gold and silver, offer a hedge against a falling currency. But when it comes to paper assets like stocks, I have found that the masses really don’t have a sense of what they bring to the table and how the professionals use them. Simply said, the big advantage of paper assets is that you can make money faster when markets are rising and crashing, often with little risk and very little money. There are four key advantages to paper assets: liquidity, agility, leveragability and scalability.

Paper assets can be very liquid. High liquidity simply means they are easy to sell. If you own real estate or a business that carries an inventory, you can appreciate ϐ Ǥ Ǧ Ǧ ǡ but in today’s world of electronic trading, stocks are bought and sold faster that any human being could ever hope to do. In turn, this unprecedented speed can create unprecedented volatility. While the working masses have been taught to “hold” in their 401(k)s, the pros seize every opportunity to buy and sell, while mutual fund owners watch helplessly on the sideline. The ability to sell can be an advantage. Even some real estate investors might like the idea of having a portion of their wealth in assets they can liquidate quickly. After all, if an apartment building ϐ ǡ ǯ Dz dz rid of it as the smoke billows out of the windows ... Fire Sale — Hurry Up! It’s Going Fast! They must have insurance because they can’t sell. You get the point.

investors, opportunity abounds. For professionals, one man’s crisis in another man’s windfall. ϐ moves — up, down, or sideways. They separate the pros from the amateurs. In the 1990s, billionaire Mark Cuban sold his company bradcast.com to Yahoo! for $7 billion. He later hedged his fortune ϐ Ǥ 401(k) owners fell down the dot.com roller coaster. The 401(k) holders rode the roller coaster up again when Alan Greenspan dropped rates to create a housing debt bubble. When the housing coaster crested, Goldman traders Michael Swenson and Josh Birnbaum took short positions and made Goldman a fortune while the 401(k) amateurs lost half their retirement and, more importantly, advanced from age 50 to 60 with a decade of nothing.

Ǧ Ǧ ǡ markets are being manipulated. If you are a paper assets pro, you don’t care. Opportunity abounds. The irony is that the very crash many people fear might be the very event that could bring the opportunity of a lifetime.

As stated in Part One of this article, both Bert Dohmen and Richard Russell see a very bright future for those who know what they are doing... but a potentially disastrous one for most people. The problems in the future are with those who are not prepared for the future. As you may know, the greatest fear of any bureaucrat or political leader is civil unrest. The primary reason why central banks are printing money is to make sure Ǥ ǡ becomes stronger, exports become more expensive, and expensive exports lead to higher unemployment. ǡ ǡ ϐ takes off, which also angers the citizens.

But I’d bet they were using leveraged instruments to short the market. While the average worker has ϐ ǡ professionals use a mix of three markets: debt, equity and Ǥ Ǧ ǡ Buffett labeled some derivatives as “Financial weapons of mass destruction.” One could assume that he was not a buyer of derivatives, but what many people do not know is that he was a seller. He was selling derivatives on stock indexes and bonds for ϐ Ǥ

Paper assets are scalable. Andy Tanner: The good news for the little guy is that paper asserts are scalable. The barrier to entry to trading paper like the pros is education, not money. Buffett might own millions of shares in Ǧ Ǥ ǯ they own the place — because they do. At ages 5 and 7 they are shareholders. This is also good news in developing one’s education in paper because you can start small. While some will continue wasting time in debate about which assets class is best, others will turn to increasing their education ϐ ϐ Ǥ It seems the best personal choice is to not be, or become, a part of the problem. Instead, learn to prosper regardless of whether markets are going up or down or sideways — and buy as much physical gold as you can when prices are low. My feelings are: If the government does not want you to own gold . . . maybe you should.

ould you consider yourself a highly selfgoverned individual? Would others see you this way? Are you functioning from the highest ϔ ǫ and centered on your purposeful mission? Are you giving yourself permission to make an even more extraordinary difference in the world? The word governance was derived from a Greek verb which Dz dz ϐ sense by the Greek philosopher, Plato. So, self-governance means ǡ ϐ purpose, has great clarity of direction and strategy, is unwavering in action and is mentally and emotionally stable and centered upon their great and inspiring mission of service. When you live congruently or in alignment with what is Ȇ Ȇ ǡ Ǣ Ǣ Ǧ Ǣ ϐ ǡ purposefully self-governed. But, when you set meaningless and

or values — or someone else’s values — you become ungoverned, your primitive subcortical amygdala runs wild, you become a ϐ ǡ and foolishly. The former state of being transforms you into a master of your destiny. The latter disempowers you into a victim of your history. Your physiological world within and your sociological world without consistently offer you negative feedback responses in order to assist you in achieving ever-greater authenticity, equanimity and self-governance. You are rewarded with greater awareness, ǡ ϐ vision when you live congruently with your highest values, and you ǯ Ǥ When you are unable to govern yourself, you become governed by others. Any area of your life you are not empowered and governed in is an area that others will overpower and govern you in. If you ϐ ȋ Ȍ ǡ ȋ ȌǤ ǡ Ǧ governed the more others will govern you and dictate, or become the author of, your destiny. But, the more you are self-governed the more likely you will rise and be given the opportunity to inspire and govern others. The greater your self-governance, the greater your potential for other-governance.

The true, centered and masterful you self-governs, and, in turn, Ǥ congruently according to your highest priorities or values. Whether you are a highly acclaimed global, sociopolitical or corporate leader or whether you desire to rule a local sports team, religious service or family, the principles of self-governance are still the same. The woods behind help to establish the separation of tone and texture in the painting while the deft impressionistic brushwork in the foreground becomes non-representational, void of shape and form. and light illuminate the canvas, guiding the eye as the artist has intended. But as we closely examine the painting, we are left with a mystery to solve. The young woman is not focused on anything in particular, as if in quiet thought, the world around her diffused in muted color. Is she aware of our presence? Is her grasp of her gown a shy response to our curiosity, coyly looking away so as not to be embarrassed by the interruption? The dark background beyond the highlighted trees adds to the puzzle. The solitude of her surroundings enhances the voyeurism, as Calibey intended. The effect is complete, but the mystery remains. In all these works, the artist captures a sense of personality, primarily through body language. At the same time, they are harmoniously integrated into the autonomous dimensions of the two-dimensional painted surface. This sophisticated dynamic illustrates the compatibility of certain New Realists with the heritage of modernism. Throughout this endeavor, the artist continues on his pursuit ϐ Ǥ Calibey says that, “Creating balance through this multi-approached undertaking is to create a relationship with my subject, and that is the real challenge.” The process can be torturous for Calibey, with a painting being abraded down and built back up, often over and over again. “My technique consists as much of deconstruction, as it does of construction,” he explains. “All of my paintings, through my multiapproached process, cycle into various levels of completion.” 40

Exercise: That’s right, instead of falling asleep on the couch for an hour, get in a quick, intense 20 minute workout. Some may say it’s ridiculous to work out on a holiday, but that all depends on how important extraordinary results are to you. For some, this may not be necessary, but many people will spend more time in the bathroom with a stomach ache than it will take to exercise. No one will even know you’re gone. The key to this is doing weights then cardio, 10 minutes of each. A very brisk walk or a jog at the very least is better than nothing. Put a New Cook in Charge: When getting together with family and friends, put someone new in charge who will cook the healthiest. Always Check Ingredients: The worst fat-promoting things are actually not foods themselves, but are substances found in foods as hidden ingredients. Canola oil, soybean oil, corn oil, yeast extract, ǡ ϐ only promote fat storage — some will change brain chemistry. So on top of making you feel bad for making a poor choice, they will chemically cause you to feel depressed. Avoid foods with these ingredients at all costs, and you’ll be surprised that you can eat the same foods you used to, and enjoy yourself without gaining weight, during the holidays and always. 52

Know the Foundation to Fat Loss and Staying Lean: So what is the secret of people who can relatively eat whatever they want and not get fat? They don’t overeat, they keep their body free from blockages, and they have hormonal balance. Stress is the number one culprit for throwing hormones off. This includes feeling overwhelmed and stressed about food, before and after it’s eaten. The over-obsessing about food is a sign of weakness just as much as the not caring about the quality of food one eats is. It’s the attitude that matters most and not the action itself. The negative side of this for people who have never had a problem with their weight is that they may never get pushed to the next level of eating the highest quality food, because they never had a reason to. Without a consequence, conventional foods are eaten, which are not necessarily damaging, but they won’t boost one’s health dramatically, either. For the casual, uninformed eater, this will not last and their health will eventually deteriorate. This is where the person who has had major weight problems can celebrate, because with the right knowledge and effort, they can get to a level of health beyond the average person.
