Enjoy the Valley’s Quiet, Festive Spirit during the Holidays By Emmanuel Lupe

D

id you ever wonder how the Napa Valley looks in the middle of winter during the holidays? Winter is a great time to visit Napa. It is pretty quiet, as half of the wineries are closed to allow their employees time to enjoy the holidays, but it is also pretty festive. The vines are bare with no green leaves or grapes, but are still mysteriously beautiful. Sometimes, with the fog, it is magical just to see the vineyards early in the morning. Start making your travel plans now, because Napa Valley will have a lot to offer during this upcoming holiday season starting in early December.

“I have been waiting to work again with The London West Hollywood since the day we opened, as the property delivers the David Collins Studios’ unique understanding of design, service and beyond,” says Simon Rawlings, creative director of the David Collins Studio. “The new Gate Suites will also take our timeless design to the next level.” Being in close proximity to Rodeo Drive and the shops and boutiques on Robertson Avenue means you’ll need some extra room to lay out shopping bags, and the one and two-bedroom Gate Suites are large, ranging from 1,425 square feet to almost 2,000, ǡ ͷ͵ԣ ϐ and three terraces that provide spectacular views of Tinseltown. When you’re in the land of stars, you want to feel like a star, or at least be treated like one, and Gate Suites’ guests have one-way airport transportation at their disposal if needed, and the much-appreciated VIP in-suite check-in which allows you to breeze into the hotel and up to your suite. The new construction of the Gate Suites will tempt you to stay inside your room, but remember, you are in the epicenter of the show business world, and there is so much to see and explore in a short radius from the hotel. Celebrities abound everywhere, including in the restaurants and bar at The London West Hollywood, all under the direction of Michelin-starred chef/TV star Gordon Ramsay. His signature restaurant, Gordon Ramsay at The London West Hollywood, ϐ Ǥ is a perfect place to soak in the sights of Hollywood and Beverly Hills, a serene and tranquil place to enjoy a glass of wine or cocktail as the sizzle sparkles below. And make sure you pack your bathing suit and spend some time enjoying the magical views at the rooftop pool, which is heated year-round, and has luxury cabanas and plush

lounge chairs surrounding it that allow you to get as much or as little privacy as you desire. The London West Hollywood is a cool place to be. TAKEOFF GOLF GRAYHAWK GOLF CLUB Now we turn our attention eastward to sunny Scottsdale, Arizona. One of the nation’s best cities for golf, Scottsdale is home to several premium golf courses and communities. One club that we here at Jetset have been touting for years is Grayhawk Golf Club. One of Scottsdale’s most recognized courses features not one, but two brilliantly-designed 18-hole courses: Talon and Raptor, both providing unique challenges as they wind through North Scottsdale’s spectacular Sonoran Desert. Each course features more than its share of memorable holes.

But perhaps what we love most about Grayhawk is the relaxed, upscale-but-casual atmosphere. After the round, relax in the comforts of a great clubhouse facility. The spacious, 40,000-square foot clubhouse is complete with an award-winning golf shop, several conference rooms and full locker room facilities for its members. There are also more places to eat than at other championship courses. Before you head out to the course, fuel up with a cup of coffee or breakfast burrito at The Morning Joint. When it’s time for dinner, the classier Quill Creek Cafe has a huge selection, including ribs and prime rib, and Isabella’s Kitchen serves up Italian country bistro fare. And don’t forget Phil’s Grill, aptly named after the PGA Tour’s great Phil Mickelson, which is the place to be after a round. It serves giant margaritas to help you forget about your score, or, better yet, embellish how good it really was. TROON NORTH GOLF CLUB Another classic desert golf experience in Scottsdale is Troon North Golf Club. It also boasts two 18-hole courses: the Monument and the Pinnacle. At Troon North, challenge and visual sensation combine, as each of its Tom Weiskopf-designed courses are both thrilling to play and invigorating to behold. Both courses stretch through the natural ravines and foothills in the shadows of Pinnacle Peak. The immaculately-groomed fairways, bentgrass greens and exceptional customer service create the renowned Troon Golf experience. Whether

HIKE THROUGH YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK

PREFERRED BACKPACKING GUIDE: Wildland Trekking

Nowhere is the overwhelming sense of escape better illustrated than deep in the Greater Yellowstone wilderness — still the wildest and most biodiverse ecosystem in the northern hemisphere. To visit an area like this, you can wait in line to enter the main national park and be surrounded by a babble of tourists gawking at every turn, or you can hire an experienced guide and enter the backcountry where few will ever visit and those that ϐ Ǥ ǯ Jetset did with Wildland Trekking. Recommended Trek: Start your journey just outside of Jackson, Wyoming in the Wind River Range, a rarely-visited section of Eastern Yellowstone. The hike will take you 30+ miles, over 8,000 total feet in elevation change, and through some of the most beautiful areas any of us had ever seen. This range offers numerous peaks above 13,000 feet and spectacular glacier-cut valleys that rival any in the world. Wildlife abounds, and given this is wilderness country, you will never cross paths with a motorized vehicle. Trust us when we tell you that this is as wild an area as you can get. And, when you put on your backpack, lace up your boots and grab your trekking poles — the last thing you will be thinking about is work. There is no better escape than this, no freer place to be and no better way to return to your normal life forever changed. Wildland Trekking operates a world-class organization providing topof-the-line gear, experienced guides and chef-level cooking along the way. to Creating

Leaders & Successful Teams How to Build a Star Team vs. a Team of Stars By Ken McElroy

I

start with the premise that the function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers.

It is my belief that many of the employee and management problems we see in the workplace are directly related to our early programming from the school system. Many of us learned that the way to succeed in the classroom was to do everything ourselves in an ongoing competition against others. However, on the school playground or in sports, the system favors teaming and so begins our confusion. So it’s no surprise to me that employees come into our company initially unwilling to share and collaborate. My partner and I are committed as employers to develop individuals into team players, yet many of our employees, including senior managers, still subconsciously write off collaboration and team meetings as some kind of exercise to make everyone feel good, and so they struggle. If you can teach people to cooperate, you will create a winning team with shared values and an environment oriented to trust, joint creativity, open communication and cohesive team effort. 88

“Understanding the big picture promotes collaboration, increases commitment and improves quality.” - Ken McElroy

Collins. In that book, he says you can’t expect to only work with “A” players — otherwise, your leadership wouldn’t be needed. Years ago, my partner and I decided that the best hiring decision we could make was to hire the person with the best attitude. I’ll take attitude over technical skill any day. People with great attitudes want to succeed. As Herb Kelleher, former Southwest Airlines CEO used to say, “We can change skill levels through training, but we can’t change attitude.” Southwest, Google, Apple and The Four Seasons also all hire for attitude, and it’s a big part of what makes these organizations so successful. Of course, there are also those who lack critical skills or a positive attitude. Business can suffer and sometimes fail through inaction in dealing with these people. Do not underestimate the negative impact that these individuals can have on the team’s success. 4. Align people with the stuff they are passionate about. This is a key point. If people love what they do, it will not seem like work to them and they will stay with you for the long haul. Take stock ϐ that your team has a better chance of success. Don’t keep someone in a job role just because they’ve been doing it for long time if you truly think their talents could make a bigger contribution in another role, even if they don’t have much experience in that area. Their previous work history and passion will fuel a strong desire to learn and can become a strong driver of innovation and growth. 5. Develop your people and frequently interact. One of the great quotes on leadership by Wendell Willkie is, “Education is the mother of leadership.” I believe that if you can make learning fun, the education comes easier.

ǡ ϐ people and we study a book together as a group. Last year, we studied Tribal Leadership by Dave Logan. It might surprise you that when we are together, we do not review spreadsheets, margins or budgets. This is important, but that is what the rest of the year is for. Rather, we use this time for personal development. We study and discuss topics on management and leadership. We debate and have fun. Last year, we did a game-based exercise to create a “MC Companies — Code of Honor.” This is an example of managing from the inside out. When great ideas are generated by our employees, it makes it easier to hold them accountable for things they themselves adopted. We frequently interact as a company to discuss new initiatives and strategy changes. The worst thing you can do is surprise your staff members about a new way to do something that will drastically alter their day-to-day work. This naturally makes people defensive and skeptical. Whenever possible, give people an informal heads-up that a change is coming and let them know some of the reasoning involved. They will be glad you kept them in the loop. If they don’t agree with the reasoning, and you have fostered an environment where they can express their dissent, you need to listen. Understanding the big picture promotes collaboration, increases commitment and improves quality. Too often, people are asked to work on part of a task without being told how their role contributes to the desired end result, much less how their efforts are impacting the ability of others to do their work. I believe my role as a leader is to capture and communicate an inspiring vision and to keep it before myself and my people. As it says in the most famous book of all time, the Bible, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” - Proverbs 29:18 ISSUE 5 . 2014

There are three things that could happen when a company is purchased. It could retain its name and brand equity. It could be merged with another similar company and a new name is created. There’s nothing more detrimental to a brand than leaving customers to wonder what’s going to happen to their favorite product after they hear the company who makes it is being acquired. Not only do customers need to know that a merger or acquisition is happening, they need to understand how it will positively impact the products or services offered by that company. In whatever communications a company issues, whether internal or external, it’s crucial they are consistent in their positioning of the brand. Inconsistencies in messaging about an acquisition or in the way a brand is positioned are detrimental to brand value. When a brand loses value, it forces a company to compete on price alone instead of the value customers hold in that brand. Protecting a brand is how you build long-term value in a business. It goes beyond the tangible assets, the bricks and mortar, of a company to something that translates to so much more. It’s a fact that companies with well-known brands can sell their products at a much higher margin. The greater a brand’s equity, the larger the value at which a company can sell its products. And the greater the value of the brand, the greater the value of the entire company.

Their book — The Social ǣ ϔ Ȃ — is an inspirational guidebook for entrepreneurs who want to do well . . . aspiring to join income earners in that top one percent by doing good for society. I wrote about this in Part One, and it bears repeating: When entrepreneurs create jobs, they create jobs that generate tax revenue. When the government creates jobs, their jobs increase taxes. When taxes go up, the middle class shrinks and poverty increases. The good news is, the more jobs an entrepreneur creates, the better able they are to afford their own Ferrari — or whatever else they dream of owning or doing. None of us has all the answers to the demographic problems portrayed in the historical statistics I’ve cited in these articles, but each of us has some of the answers to the challenges that face society today. Josh and Lisa have agreed to share how they are doing well by solving problems our government cannot solve. Here’s their story:

obert makes the case for what we see every day: a system that is breaking down. We have worked in law enforcement, nightclubs and in behavioral health for the last 20 years. Every day, professionally, we have dealt with people and their behaviors. As entitlement programs expand, the increased pressure to provide and change can crush people, causing them to act out, and, oftentimes, turn to drugs or alcohol to deal with their problems. After I — Josh — got sober in 2002 and we started publicly talking about addiction, we quickly learned that we were not the only ones who were struggling. We found that there were so many families secretly dealing with addiction — and that it was tearing families apart. One is building alliances in the massively-scalable cloud storage arena, another recently graduated with a degree encompassing tech-integrated marketing and graphic design, and a third works for me in personal cloud-data services. When they speak of the future, they comfortably describe a life of self-driving cars, cashless transactions with nothing more ϐ ǡ crypto-currencies and shared — rather than owned — personal property. At times, we exchange ideas regarding how technologies in development today will impact our daily lives — and what might become the “how did you ever live without” items their children will enjoy (think: smartphones, GPS, digital music, DVRs...). We posit how their children will wonder why we lived with lifethreatening disease, how intercontinental travel took the greater part of a day, why we ever carried around “change,” what an ATM

CRUISING ALTITUDE INSPIRE

Can we ever get rid of one side of life? Or does life eventually awaken us to the wisdom of the balance of complementary pairs? BY DR. JOHN DEMARTINI

t has been known and stated for at least two and a half millennia that the impulsive desire to seek for that which is unavailable and the instinctual desire to avoid that which is unavoidable is the continuous source of human suffering. Like the search for monopoles within a magnet of any magnitude, our impulsive search for a one-sided reality or outcome will become a lesson in utter futility, for freedom is equally and simultaneously paired with constraint, and reward with the price of service.

CRUISING ALTITUDE INSPIRE

Equanimity within and equity without is nature’s way of calling us to expanded greatness. But, to inwardly appreciate the necessity of all such complementary pairs of opposites is to liberate us from constraints of our id and animal-like behavior. From the ancient teachings of the Buddha to the more recent transcendental principles of Ralph Waldo Emerson, this compensatory message has been sustained in the minds and hearts of the wise men and women for centuries. Just as our genetic code consists of complementary opposite strands of gendered DNA to carry out our embryonic development from our single cell beginnings to our many specialized cells today, and just as our physical body demands an autonomic and metabolic balance of anabolism and catabolism as well as mitosis and apoptosis to continue to evolve, adapt and grow, so, too, do our lives require the ϐ our most meaningful aims. Within each of us is a yearning to make a difference and to ϐ meaningful cause that inspires us to some level of greatness. In pursuit of this unique mission, we repeatedly become confronted by various pairs of complementary opposites, living within us and existing around us, whether they be the pairs of support and ǡ ϐ ǡ ǡ hero or villain, good or bad, and virtuous or vicious, each pair becomes our essential and constant companion along our journey of transformation and achievement.

“It is wiser to embrace life for the ljm] Yf\ ZYdYf[]\ eY_faÚ[]f[] l`Yl it offers than to strive for a fantasy of what it idealistically should be.” - Dr. John Demartini When we live congruently with our most important values and highest priorities and are therefore purposeful, mindful and resilient, such complementary opposites are recognized and wisely viewed as our essential and synchronous companions. We embrace them wholeheartedly and see them as our feedback loops to authenticity and continuous concentric expansion. When we are feeling impulsive and polarized, we view these pairs as sources of frustration and angst. We are constantly being lead to appreciate the complementary pairs within and around us. From the pairs of opposites in business management of overworker and under-worker and the empowered and entitled employees to the pairs existing within family, social and economic dynamics, these complementary opposites reign true to our daily and living existence. Whether they be the nomadic wanderer and traveler and the homebound, the risking ambitious and the overcautious, or the extrovert and the introvert, these pairs keep our journey inspiring and

enlivening. Maximum growth and development occurs at the border of order and disorder, and the boundary of any such pair of opposites. The more we seek the one side within the pair, the more the other ϐ Ǥ ǡ ϐ that curiously overwhelm us. Just as we do not need to get rid of half ϐ ǡ ǯ ϐ Ǥ purpose calls us beyond the pairs into greater and integrated actions more than reactions, and wisdom more than illusive folly. ϐ and synchronicity of all complementary opposites that continuously provide us with our inspiring existence. Love has been considered just such an integrated pair and when we awaken to its presence within, we feel grateful for the day. Could the very message that our intuition is forever revealing to us be this essential balance and symmetry of nature? When we are up, our intuition attempts to awaken us to the downsides; when we are down, it nudges at us to look upward. When we listen wisely, it brings us to the truth of the center where we are neither proud, nor shamed, only inspired and our most authentic selves. Yes, it is these many pairs of complementary opposites that turn ordinary individuals into managing leaders and our degrees of ignorance into profound wisdom. The admonition of the heart and the inner and outer balance that permeates and surrounds us is guiding Ǥ the marriage of opposites that make the forces of conscious evolution work. Without them, we would strive for the illusion of monopolar existences, which would split us up into dissociated parts that Ǥ such monopolar addictions. By embracing the two sides of life equally

and at once, we can transcend the prey seeking and predator, avoiding the animal nature that lies reactive within, and enlighten our pathway with the resilient path of wholeness and stillness. All areas of our lives then become enriched by such states of being and doing.

“Of all relations, the most universal is that of contrast of opposition. Every condition of thought or of things — every idea and every situation in the world — leads irresistibly to its opposite, and then unites with it to form a higher or more complex whole . . . The movement of evolution is a continuous development of oppositions and their merging and reconciliation . . . Thesis, antithesis and synthesis constitute the formula and secret of all development and all reality.” - Will Durant

ϐ that it offers than to strive for a fantasy of what it idealistically should Ǥ is our philias that bring about our phobias. Homeostasis is the great calling within. So, may we become fully aware of the freedom that our complementary pairs of opposites bring us, and may we continually honor such evolving pairs from within ourselves and all others.

It possesses a minute repeater with two cathedral gongs and a tourbillon; on the front dial, it indicates standard time and features a perpetual calendar with a retrograde date and a moon-phase display. The rear dial sets the stage for astronomical functions: it shows the northern sky, sidereal time, and the angular progression and phases of the moon. Unlike the Ref. 5002, it indicates the moon phases instead of the moon age and features apertures instead of hands for the day of the week, month, and leap year displays. The totally new aspect of the Sky Moon Tourbillon is its appearance, with lavish decorations that elevate it to the status of a grand creation. IMI DESIGN STUDIO OUTDOOR LIVING

iving well includes making the most of nature’s beauty; fantastic panoramas, fresh breezes and chirping birds are the best decorations to be had. To ensure a client has this ability, it is part of their interior designer’s scope of work to expand the indoor spaces to seamlessly extend to the outdoors. The first consideration goes to the architectural details and use of materials. Through the appropriate combinations, the materials of the structure will evoke the connection with the environment of the home. We then turn our attention to the human needs. Luxury and function are considered in the appointment of furniture for seating and dining. With the recent advancement in technologies used to create textiles, the outdoor space can have the same luxurious feel as your interior. Velvets, linens and even soft area rugs all surprisingly weather the elements while providing a sensual and comfortable tactile experience. Outdoor spaces have become gathering spaces for the family; from games and dining to movies and music, they are functional extensions of the family room. In addition to living

From grills, full-service bars and pizza ovens to ice cream stations, there is much that can be accomplished through planning and design, leaving the outdoor kitchen a culinary experience. Comfort comes from correct temperature control. This can be accomplished with heaters, fire pits and misting systems that can all be incorporated into the layout of the design. As the place where the interior and exterior meet good design, outdoor spaces offer many options to enhance a person’s daily experience, allowing the connection to the beauty of the outdoors to be made in luxurious style. “Landscape images of soothing, calm and healing light”

Connecting the Dots — Mastering the Art of Pointillism “I paint landscapes because landscapes touch everyone,” explains Canadian artist Jim Pescott. He says that his paintings allow his clients to “experience the freedom of open windows and take a relaxing walk in the woods any time they want.” Pescott specializes in pointillism, a technique created by French painter Georges Seurat in the 1800s. Pointillism relies on the use of multiple dots of pure color to create images, and Pescott’s contemporary approach to the art form has earned him the title of “Pointillism Master” by ARTtour International PDJD]LQH +H ŹQGV painting with dots to be a meditative process. “My paintings bring a sense of calm when we wander through the dots. So many people tell me this.” His work has been exhibited around the world in destinations as diverse as Paris, Quebec, Cannes, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janiero and Monaco. For Pescott, there is no shortage of beautiful, peaceful scenes that inspire him. “Where I live is huge and it will keep me painting forever,” he notes. He shares many of his works on his website. But, he says, “If you don’t see a piece of real estate you love, bring me your favourite place and I’ll help you own it on canvas.” 48

PENNY FRENCH-DEAL Penny French-Deal creates paintings with a spontaneous brush and impressionistic style all her own. Working primarily in oils, she masterfully creates images full of depth, color and texture, giving her work a wondrous, emotive energy. While comprised of warm, vibrant colors, her palette often evokes a somewhat romantic view of the world around her. Each piece conveys an abstraction of shapes, colors and contrast that ϐ Ǥ This natural interaction immediately places you in the scene, fully engaged and imagining being in that meadow, secret garden or busy street. Penny has had many solo shows and received numerous awards. Her inspiration comes from her travels throughout the United States and Europe as well as her fascination with everyday experiences. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, and her work can be found in private, corporate, museum and university collections throughout the United States and Europe. “As an artist, it is my desire to capture the essence of that which surrounds us,” Penny says, “whether that is in the power of movement, the splendor of landscapes or the soul of portraits.” Penny French-Deal • French-Deal Fine Art 171 A, North Main Street - Roanoke, IN 46783 260.578.2181 • penny@french-deal.com French-deal.com ISSUE 5 . 2014

VERMONT PAINTER

HARRY A. RICH My paintings are children of the New York School. They strive to build on that heritage, while remaining within the tradition of Modernism. In the studio, I work principally on the margins of what I already know about painting and paint, searching for what I don't know. Abstract and nonrepresentational painting, unfettered with distracting literal images, may allow the paint to release its transformative potential. It may become a carrier of emotion and small joys. It may even evoke the unique, aesthetic, poetic or meditative capacities of viewers. One can hope, anyway. In the studio, in the murk of the discovery process, not knowing how to let paint on canvas achieve those things . . . well, that's the engine. 802.375.2940 • harry@harryarich.com Harryarich.com “Abstract 2014” • 36" x 36"

MARCY ANN VILLAFANA FINE ART Marcy Ann Villafana's work is mostly of the feminine form. She ϐ expressing it through color and or texture. Inspired by the works of Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Manet, Salvador Dali, Mucha, and Patrick Nagel, she derived her own style through her love of cutting paper. Unlike other artists, who paint ȋ Ȍǡ ϐ precision of cutting the papers with a plain old Exacto knife. She developed this style as a teenager as a result of her near-sightedness.

BARBARA FARREN FINE ART

LINA ALATTAR FINE ART

Strong commitments to nature and the beauty of our natural world are the driving forces behind Barbara's work. Classic drawing skills, honed within the discipline of draftsmanship, form the basis for her paintings. In the tradition of narrative art, every work tells a unique story, giving character and meaning to even the most everyday things. By painting from life whenever possible, she works towards establishing a strong emotional connection with the viewer.

Lina Alattar’s art offers bold, expressive and intimate abstract paintings. Her usage of color and brushstrokes easily create an atmospheric landscape that pays homage to Abstract Expressionism. Alattar’s commitment to the working process is meant to engage the viewer to appreciate the paintings’ sensual, meditative, and intriguing Ǥ ϐ ǡ stillness and meaning in our everyday lives.

After graduation, Beth moved from Jacksonville, Illinois to Chicago in pursuit of an art career at the Art Institute of Chicago. However, being tall and thin, she found herself swept into the world of fashion and became one of Skrebneski’s top fashion models. Her face was featured in many national magazines and covers that included the famous James Bond Playboy issue. After a very long modeling career, she and Diane Pryde opened “Model Image Center” where she was a partner until 2002. Since then, she has lived in Arizona devoting her time, once again, to her art. Her portraits led to winning awards, being featured in articles and being interviewed, as well as achieving a juried artist status. She was the cover artist in 2010 for the “Hidden in the Hills” Studio Tour Directory. Beth has also been featured in advertisements for the “Arizona Fine Art Expo.” When painting her animals, she conveys as much emotion in her animal portraits as she does in her human faces. Adventuring behind the eyes we look into, her discovery unveils the expression of life found in all living creatures.
