EDITOR’S LETTER

After spending part of a day with UFC President Dana White in his Las Vegas office, I’m still trying to figure out what piece of memorabilia or collectable artwork he owned and showcased in there that was the most unique and impressive. Just like the individual features in this issue of Jetset, it’s hard to settle on the one I liked best, but I can assure you they all tell amazing stories and lead you on an enlightening summer journey. Much like our cover story subject himself, this entire issue is bold, aggressive, interesting and entertaining. Plus, the following pages do a great job of not only showcasing the affluent lifestyle, but also answering some questions you may have subconsciously been pondering.

M. DAMAS, M.D. SEA BLUE NEUROLOGY CENTER, P.A. GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE RESIDENCY, UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA FELLOWSHIP, JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY

GLOBAL CONCIERGE SERVICE TREATING ALL NEUROLOGICAL DISEASES: Stroke, Headache, Seizure, Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Neuropathy, Vertigo, Dementia, Brain Tumor, Weakness, Memory loss, Tremor, Back pain, Dizziness, etc.

For instance, where on the globe are the fine wines of the world currently located, and what exactly are they? Go on a journey with us as we discover and spotlight them. Where would be some glamorous getaway destinations for you to slip off to this summer and fall? We have some beautiful luxury summer escape features, ranging from a new and hip hotel to some of the most spectacular private villas in the Caribbean, Europe, Hawaii and Mexico. Our all-star cast of executive contributing writers tackles topics like how the U.S. has become a renter nation, as well as an argument being made for holacracy over bureaucracy. Robert Kiyosaki is the nation’s preeminent voice on the unique differences of people with varying wealth, and his story in this issue examines what is happening to the rest of our population while the rich get richer. We also have a great story from new writer Colin Cowie as he sets out to define what exactly luxury is in this day and time. Our cover story on UFC President Dana White explains how he has been the driving force behind quite literally the fastest-growing sports organization in the world. You don’t have to be a mixed martial arts fan to enjoy meeting him and learning the details of a truly original American success story. Enjoy the issue, and make sure you visit jetsetmag.com for behind-thescenes and extended videos and exclusive content, including a look inside the museum/gallery/peep show that is the office of UFC President Dana White.

Cuervo y Sobrinos Releases THE Exclusive Historiador Flameante Blue Limited Edition BY KAREN BROST

or its latest timepiece, Cuervo y Sobrinos, known as “the Swiss brand with a Latin soul,” reached back through time for inspiration. The result is the Historiador Flameante Blue Edition, which is based on a vintage design the company created in the 1950s. The new timepiece was created to commemorate the company’s 10th anniversary in the U.S., an occasion which is celebrated with a special engraving around the watch’s ultra-thin, 2.6 mm manuallywound movement. This movement is housed in a rose gold case accented by a premium Louisiana alligator strap in midnight blue. The timepiece

A NEW NAME IN LUXURY MENSWEAR DESIGN By KAREN BROST

hen two long-time friends share a passion for craftsmanship and a willingness to travel the globe in pursuit of quality, and then they join forces to create a menswear brand, you can be sure the resulting collection will be something extraordinary. That’s the heritage of Haxby Collective, a new name in luxury menswear designed to bridge the gap between classic and contemporary. Michael Dow, a trained leathercrafter and Timothy White, also a leathersmith and a silversmith, as well, traveled the globe for two years –‘ Ď?‹Â?† –Š‡ „‡•– …”ƒˆ–•Â?‡Â? ƒÂ?† Ď?‹Â?‡•– Â?ƒ–‡”‹ƒŽ• –‘ …”‡ƒ–‡ ƒ Â?‡™ Â?‡Â?•™‡ƒ” brand that would offer luxury without compromise. They journeyed from Los Angeles to London, Switzerland, Italy and Japan, and the result of their travels and brilliant collaboration is their limited-edition, debut collection which offers a hint of great things to come.

pair is made of luxurious cordovan leather and carefully buffed by hand. Going far beyond your typical casualwear, these sneakers are designed to become a statement piece and destined to become a favored choice of men who wear them. Each belt offered in Haxby’s debut collection is truly one of a kind, crafted in Switzerland and Italy using stainless steel, hand-cast precious metals, precision-cut polished sapphire crystal and the best leathers and fabrics in the world. This is, of course, just the beginning of what Haxby has in store. A full range of outerwear, knitwear, bags and watches is yet to come, and like Haxby Collective’s debut collection, each item will feature impeccable design, stay true to the concept of quality without compromise and continue to offer men a new kind of luxury. In Switzerland and other countries, where watchmaking is raised to the level of haute horlogerie, Berdyansky is a respected expert, a member of international juries, a trading partner of a dozen of the most prestigious watch companies and a personal friend of independent horologers whose names are well-known to horlogerie connoisseurs worldwide. He is also the author of many changes in design and technical solutions which horologers gladly introduce at his suggestion. An example of this collaboration is the friendship Berdyansky developed with English horologer Peter Speake-Marin. After completing his studies at the prestigious Swiss watchmaking school WOSTEP, Speake-Marin joined Somlo Antiques in London where he had the privilege of restoring antique watches made by many of the great masters. In his spare time, Speake-Marin handcrafted a tourbillion pocket watch with twin power trains, later known as the “Foundation Watch,” which helped him earn membership in the prestigious Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants. He

eventually established his own workshop near Lake Geneva, and today, his unrivalled creative approach to horology results in timepieces of unique style and impeccable quality. The Born Watch, the result of the collaboration between Berdyansky and Speake-Marin, should please even the most worldlywise collectors. In fact, it’s a watch that Berdyansky would like to have in his own collection. In the development of the Born Watch, no detail was left unattended. On the dial of rose gold an image of an animal, corresponding to the watch owner’s birth year according to the Chinese horoscope, is skillfully engraved. In our example, it is the dragon, which is also a symbol of Crystal Group Ukraine. The back side of the watch features a diamond-set constellation of stars as seen in the night sky at the place and in the year of the owner’s birth. Speake-Marin was so impressed by the results that he asked Berdyansky’s permission to present this watch to the world at the exhibition in Basel, and that is how the Born Watch line in the SpeakeMarin collection was born. Throughout his childhood, Christian von Koenigsegg was fascinated by machinery. He even went so far as to dream about creating his perfect sportscar. In stark contrast to the rest of us, however, Christian actually went ahead and turned that dream into reality when he turned 22. Thus, the Koenigsegg car company was born. This year, Koenigsegg is celebrating 20 years in business with the introduction of the Koenigsegg One:1 car described by the ǯ ϐ ǡ ǯ market with the unveiling of a new New York City dealership. Usually, we have the opportunity to test drive the car we are featuring, but this time, the Koenigsegg One:1 is a different type of car. The Koenigsegg One:1 program, described as one of the most exclusive production car programs ever envisioned by a car maker, calls for only six units of the $2 million One:1 to be built. Unfortunately for all of us that were wondering when the car would be available, all six cars have been spoken for already.

Villas of Distinction Delivers Extraordinary Vacation Experiences around the Globe By TOM ZENNER

T

here’s something very unique, special, unforgettable, and, oh yes, let’s be very clear about this — addictive — about a vacation spent at a Villas of Distinction private villa, whether it’s in Italy, Spain, France, Greece, the Caribbean, Hawaii, or, as in the case of a recent stay we enjoyed immensely, Mexico. Readers of Jetset Magazine certainly understand the value of great service, and simply put, it’s impossible to put a price tag on it when the service is world class, which is exactly how it was on our stay at the modern and seductive Kite House in Playa del Carmen. Located in an exclusive gated community, just steps from a pristine, white sandy beach, Kite House is a fully-automated home, with Caribbean Sea views from the dining room, kitchen and pool area. Kite House, like all Villas of Distinction properties, offered all you could ask for in a vacation home. The over-the-top service was on display from the moment we arrived on the property until we begrudgingly said goodbye three days later. At Kite House, we had full-time cooks preparing fresh meals from the menus we requested. Like we did, you will have your very own personal concierge who will manage the shopping for meals, as well as have your own bar set up at the home. The concierge will also acclimate you to the home, introduce you the Wi-Fi and all the electronic equipment, coordinate the staff and line up any and all transportation you may need. Daily maid service is standard with all villa rentals, meaning every time you return to the home it will be spotless. As someone who has traveled around the world and stayed at a wide array of unique places, I can say from experience that Gateway Canyons is really out of this world. Boasting luxury accommodations and breathtaking views, it effectively caters to the most discerning traveler. The wellness-focused treatments at the Spa at Gateway, private tours aboard a luxury aircraft, privileged access to more than 100 years of automotive history at the Gateway Colorado Auto Museum and a variety of self-selected experiential activities offered through the curiosity adventures program, are just the beginning of the options available.

Even if you don’t want to spend too much time relaxing because of the impressive list of lifetime experiences offered, you must stay in one of the Palisade Casitas which comes with your own private butler. Set apart in tranquil seclusion on the resort grounds, each casita offers the ultimate private retreat. Custom artisan furnishings and handcarved doors from Peru blend seamlessly with one-of-a-kind rugs Ǧ ϐ the crystal blue skies and turquoise shades that are ubiquitous with the American Southwest. When it comes to the culinary side of things, here, they shine as well. With four dining options ranging from white linen to casual, ϐ Ǥ patio under the shadow of the Palisade. or most people, economic data is meaningful only when it touches their lives. Is it easy or hard for me to get a job, buy a house, start a business and grow my income? This is why the press pays so much attention to economic data, which can, unfortunately, be very confusing.

The U.S. homeownership rate recently hit its lowest level since the mid-1990s, according to a recent Census release that showed that despite two years of recovery in the housing market, there are still fewer homeowners than there were before the recession. The reason the homeownership rate is so important is that it is a good indicator of the overall health of an economy due to the number of factors that are involved. For example, lack of savings, big debts, dented or no credit, unemployment and interest rates are all tied to homeownership. The homeownership rate is always held down by slow job growth, tight mortgage credit and declining affordability, and these are all happening today. American households are in constant motion, determined by millions of individual decisions that Americans make about their living situations. “Household formation,” as economists call it, is the foundation of demand in the housing market. When a young adult moves away from home and gets their own apartment, a household is formed; when a retiree moves out of his own place and into the apartment above an adult child’s garage, one ceases to exist. 62

Compounding this problem, unemployment for 15-to-24year-olds is nearly 16 percent, twice the national average. College graduates are doing slightly better, but young people with just a high school diploma face unemployment rates of nearly 30 percent. One study claims that nearly one million unemployed young Americans will lose $22,000 each in earnings over the next ten years. A slow start to earnings also means a slow start to saving. Young people will have plenty of hurdles to becoming homeowners and we are ultimately facing an entire generation that could possibly rent their entire lives. This will greatly affect their overall wealth and spending habits for the future economy. For the time being, we’re likely to see a higher percentage of households formed being rental households and overall homeownership rates are likely to continue to drop. Some of the ǯ ϐ ǡ ǡ giant Blackstone — even Warren Buffett ‘s Berkshire Hathaway — know about the “Renter Nation” trend. Holacracy over

BUREAUCRACY? ZAPPOS PUTS THE CONCEPT TO THE TEST

BY BARRY LABOV

Z

appos is a company that’s admired by many for a variety of reasons — their amazing rise to superstardom, their outstanding customer service and their innovative business model. Now they’re continuing their avant-garde methods by adopting a new way to structure their organization. By the end of this year, Zappos will have completely transitioned to a Holacracy® system. While the online giant is a leader in implementing advanced techniques, for many, the jury is still out on Holocracy and whether or not it’s the structure of the future or a passing fad. Holacracy was developed by entrepreneur Brian Robertson and is focused on the tasks that need to be achieved within a company rather than a hierarchical reporting structure. According to holacracy.org, it changes how an organization is structured, how decisions are made and how power is distributed. In Holacracy, rather than following an established chain of command, employees are organized into teams or circles. These circles, groups or teams, whatever you choose to call them, divide tasks up among them and each person takes responsibility for completing their task. Therefore, Holacracy is centered on the work that needs to be done, not the bureaucracy of who oversees what. As a result, there are no job titles within Holacracy because employees take on several roles and are usually part of several different groups. Holacracy is designed to eliminate micromanagement. While this sounds like a free-for-all and maybe even complete chaos, there is some level of leadership among the circles within Holacracy. Those who serve as “lead links” can assign employees to circles and roles or remove Issue 4 . 2014

them as necessary. That doesn’t, however, mean a lead link can hand down orders to a circle about how they should get their tasks done. That is determined by a governing structure that includes everyone in a circle. Holacracy is also designed to provide a way to address tensions, ϐ it could be. For example, the way you might think is best to achieve a certain task may not be the way you’re told to achieve it or the way your existing structure may allow you to achieve it. When these tensions aren’t addressed, they can build into frustration and a feeling of disconnection within a company. Holacracy sets out to provide ϐ authority to determine the best way to do their work. Self-directed work teams, like those found in Holacracy, rely on self-regulation, which doesn’t always work with every employee. This can mean challenges for large corporations like Zappos, which employs 1,500 people. And for many, titles mean something. When someone has worked hard to earn their place in an organization, it’s ϐ leadership responsibilities that go along with their position. That change affects CEOs almost more than any other role at a company. However, according to Robertson, even though leaders of companies may not have the traditional top-down hierarchy behind them with Holacracy, they can learn new approaches and ϐ a company’s vision. He explains that Holacracy is an alternative to rigid structures that entrepreneurs often see as detriments to getting work done. Rather than focus on the bureaucracy of who does what, and who reports to whom, Holacracy is centered on providing the right organization to effectively get work done. 68

Tony Hsieh - Zappos CEO

This organic way of structuring a company sounds good on paper, but it appears that opinions are mixed on whether or not it can be successfully implemented at a company as large as Zappos. Holacracy certainly could increase accountability among employees and support greater transparency within a company, but whether teams would ϐ ϐ Ǥ of it would have to do with a company’s existing culture and the willingness and initiative of those working there. Holacracy makes one think back to the days of the unexplored Ǥ ϐ land. It was a scary place for many, but eventually the pioneers ϐ Ǥ ǯ Holacracy. There are companies out there who are successfully using this system of organization today. Time will tell if it a large corporation like Zappos can make Holacracy work. As the company transitions to the new system throughout this year, it will be interesting to watch if it makes a difference, good or bad, in its success.

e’s the president, part owner and undisputed face of the UFC. The dynamic and outspoken 24/7 force of nature and driving force of the world’s fastest-growing sports organization. When it comes to his opinions, Dana White is about as subtle as a stormtrooper. However, when you spend time with White, you’re allowed to venture beyond the gruff-and ϐ brash-and-slash personality is a charismatic powerhouse who ϐ ǡ ǡ ϐ ϐ Ǥ unique version of it for the tens of millions of fans of the Ultimate Fighting Championship around the world (and these numbers are growing), who then turn their impassioned loyalty and feverpitched fervor into incredible revenue for the UFC and personal wealth for White.

He is also a man whose business acumen and personality are custom made to be in Las Vegas where the UFC is headquartered. Because another characteristic Dana told me he has, maybe above all of the others, is the need for action. He’s a natural gambler, a risk taker of epic proportions who you get the impression from spending time with him, is too smart and savvy to allow the rush and swirl of everything going on around him to be anything but a natural fuel for his nonstop, never-dull life. “It’s the way I’m wired,” White tells me in an exclusive interview for Jetset. “I love it. I like chaos. I like action. I have a place outside of Bangor, Maine, which is literally out in the sticks where I have every toy you could possibly have. It’s a place I can go and truly relax. I love it up there so much and my family members all say I am a different person when I’m up there, but I could never live there. White knows his value with the UFC, and what his presence means in terms of past success and future growth of the company, but he’s also keenly aware, like most Jetset readers are, that great success doesn’t happen because of the abilities of one person. And that success, and the subsequent worldwide fame and wealth generated for future generations that was built from scratch, doesn’t come easy for anybody. BUT WHAT ABOUT EVERYONE ELSE? PART ONE OF A TWO-PART SERIES BY ROBERT KIYOSAKI WITH JOSH AND LISA LANNON, SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS AND RICH DAD ADVISORS

I

n early 2014, the good news from Ferrari was that car sales are up. What this stat means to me is that the rich are getting richer. My question to you is this: Does an increase in Ferrari sales mean that the economy is getting better? Other questions that I ask myself are: What about the people who are not getting richer? What about the people who are hoping for a pay raise, a bump in the minimum wage of $7.25 an hour to $10.10? What’s happening to them?

In 2013, I traded my 2007 Ferrari 430 Spider for a Ferrari 458 Spider. I hated selling my 430, but I was now in love with the 458. For me, it was like dying and going to heaven. How Ferrari could make the 458 so much better than the already-great 430 is pure engineering genius. I loved my 430 and was glad when a dear friend and business partner bought that car from me. Today, he, too, drives to heaven and back every day. As many of you may know, I have never been a bleeding-heart liberal or a progressive. I love making my money as a capitalist. At the same time, I continue to be very concerned about the growing gap between the rich and everyone else. It’s why I formed The Rich Dad Company in 1997 and why Donald Trump and I wrote the book Why We Want You to Be Rich in 2006. ǡ ϐ Ǥ ǡ more people who believe in giving ϐ Ǥ ϐ ϐ Ǥ American Dream . . . once and for all. CRUISING ALTITUDE FINANCE For nearly two centuries, millions of people immigrated to America in search of the American Dream. The American Dream is the belief that everyone has a chance to become rich. Many of these immigrants left extreme poverty or persecution. America gave people the chance to become successful and rich, if they wanted it badly enough, and if they were willing to work hard to attain their dreams. Immigrants arrived at our shores, legally and illegally, with this dream of working hard and creating a better life for themselves and their children. Today, the American Dream is gone. It’s been replaced by the Entitlement Mentality. The problem with the Entitlement Mentality is that the more you give someone — give them something for nothing — the more they expect for nothing. Supporting the something-for-nothing mentality is a government bureaucracy that believes in taxing those who work and paying people who do not work, either by choice or because jobs are scarce. How much longer can this go on? It’s this threat to the American Dream, the very spirit of America, that prompted me to invite Josh and Lisa Lannon to contribute to this piece on The Rich Get Richer. They are living the American Dream . . . as entrepreneurs and capitalists who saw a need in society and created a business that could do good in communities across the country and ǡ ϐ Ǥ They wrote a book — ǣ ϔ Ȅ Entrepreneurial Journey — about their 12-year journey in creating Journey Healing Centers, addiction and substance abuse recovery centers, and how the sale of that company brought their story of the American Dream full circle. You’ll read more about their journey in Part Two of this series. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR You’ve probably heard the saying “You get what you pay for. . .” If you pay people not to work, then more people will stop working. In some states, an unemployed person can collect the equivalent of as much ̈́͵ͷǡͲͲͲ ǡ ϐ Ǧ not working. In some cases, the “government assistance” going into a household can be the equivalent of working for $20 to $25 an hour. At the same time, the government imposes more regulations on small business, making it harder for entrepreneurs to become ϐ Ǥ real jobs, jobs that produce tax revenue. Governments create jobs that raise taxes. ǡ ϐ ϐ Ǥ ǡ large and small, are afraid of taking risks and starting new ventures because they fear being sued. In 1957, Atlas Shrugged, written by Ayn Rand, was published. It is a book about today. The following passage from that book describes our current situation as if it was written today, instead of nearly six decades ago:

“When you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing; when you see that money is flowing to those who deal not in goods, but in favors; when you see that men get rich more easily by graft than by work, and your laws no longer protect you against them, but protect them from you . . . you may know that your society is doomed.” The modern Hollywood version of Atlas Shrugged is the movie The Hunger Games. I almost walked out of that movie, not because the movie was bad but because the movie was too good, too accurate, Ǥ Ǥ Ǥ ǡ ϐ Ǥ As the saying goes, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” I’ll be describing a few graphs I found on the Internet and I would like you to come to your own conclusions about our future. 78

THE MIDDLE CLASS In the 2012 Presidential election, both candidates — Barack Obama and Mitt Romney — promised to save the middle class. Another chart I’ve studied shows why both men made that promise. It’s been reported that, between 1970 and 2010, the percent of U.S. households with annual incomes within 50 percent of the median has fallen from 50.3 percent to 42.2 percent. Is the chairman/chairwoman of your board making or breaking your corporate team spirit and are their boardroom habits building or destroying your company?

A

ny incongruency between the highest values of your senior executive leader or chairman/chairwoman of the board and the true, unambiguous and stated mission, vision and primary objectives of your corporation can undermine your corporate team spirit — not only among board members — but also the executive teams and management ranks below. Any perceived inequity among corporate board members can also lead to a decline in effective corporate governance. These perceived inequities can reduce the overall leadership integrity and result in both disorder and disrespect within corporate executive management teams. Unwise personal bias, prejudice, unfairness, inequality and unfair assessment or judgment among corporate board members, or between board members and corporate executives or their management teams, can undermine the power of overall congruent team spirit and derail the execution of the corporate mission, vision and primary objectives. Disrespectfully putting other board members on pedestals, or in pits, and not appreciating or respecting them as equally contributing individuals as well as not honoring their unique contributions, can dilute the board’s governing capacities, board members’ creativity and the board’s essential collective leadership power.

You might ask, so how does a chairman/chairwoman of a corporate board ensure that their team members are acknowledged as equally respected individuals and what kind of behaviors or processes could they wisely incorporate to assure this? Self-governed equanimity within the chairman/chairwoman and within each of the board members and a collective-governing equity between each of the board members can create or lead to the formation of powerful, sustaining teams. As Albert Einstein ǡ ϐ Ǥ Sustainable fair exchange, when it comes to individual board member contributions, is essential for cohesive and productive governance. To increase the probability of such governance, the following actions can assist: 1. Having the chairman/chairwoman do a periodic selfassessment resulting in a checklist of what is working and not working over each period. 2. Having an equanimity-inducing questionnaire answered and checked off at the end of each period for any ungoverned and unwisely elevated or depressed perceptions of any personal actions of board members or executives. Having each board member identify and list the top 25 contributions that each of the other board members have made, or are making, to them individually and to the ǡ ϐ awakening greater team spirit. 4. Having each board member identify and list their own equal contributions to the other board members and to the overall corporation. This will also assist in bringing about equanimity. 5. Having each board member identify what each of the other board members do that they both like or dislike and then look within themselves for where they are presently doing and/or have done the same behaviors to the same degree. This can help each member calm down any unfair assessments and humble any internallyrepressed judgments. 6. Having each board member complete the Demartini Value Determination™ process to determine what is truly most important and highest on their list of values and create a fair individual compensation exchange for each of their contributions that is congruent with their individual highest values.

So what is the chairman’s/chairwoman’s role in all of this? A board of directors is a body of elected, nominated, appointed or chosen members who jointly oversee the activities of the corporation. It governs through the use of bylaws and rules of procedures (Riddick’s) for its own members and the corporation’s key executives’ actions. It governs, establishes policies and objectives, 84

iving well is especially true when we fully experience travel and leisure with family and friends in a luxurious, impactful environment. When designing for vehicles and other modes of travel — from coaches to yachts to planes — it is especially a time to create an exceptional design for a luxurious and memorable experience. Function in these more intimate environments requires clever space planning and multipurpose custom furnishings. Furniture may be designed to ˆ—Â?…–‹‘Â? ĥ ƒÂ? ‘ˆĎ?‹…‡ †—”‹Â?‰ –Š‡ †ƒ› ƒÂ?† †‹Â?‹Â?‰ ‹Â? –Š‡ ‡˜‡Â?‹Â?‰ and transition once again at night as extra bunks. Besides maximizing function, an interior designer’s greatest gift to a project such as this is the way it impacts the human spirit. Understanding our client’s wishes and preferences allows

for a design that will speak just to them. It will evoke the mood and emotions desired for the space. Do you need a serene Zenlike jet interior to relax between tarmacs? Or do you need a playful converted bus to live your rock-star life with colorful fuchsia cabinets and crocodile leather interiors . . . like one of our current projects. The options are as endless as the unique individuals we serve. I love the opportunity to understand their unique dynamics of personal history and future ambition. What I love about this craft is how intention drives design. What we do as interior designers allows our clients to live their lives to the fullest and create a luxurious space as the background to their life’s memories. he 2,300± deeded acres of Jane Fonda’s Forked Lightning Ranch provide a diverse ecosystem of placid beauty. New Mexico’s famed Pecos River, one of the finest trout fisheries in the state, circuitously flows for about 3½ miles through the ranch, creating an oasis for a variety of wildlife and a haven for healthy rainbow and brown trout. Consisting of willows and cottonwoods along the riparian corridor, craggy rock outcroppings and rolling foothills with lush stands of native grasses and piñon pines, Fonda’s ranch encompasses all of the extraordinary and distinctive elements of the American Southwest. The enchantment of Forked Lightning led Fonda to meticulously analyze every nuance of the ranch to site her personal dwelling. By examining the seasonal sunsets and sunrises, how the spring-rain showers sweep across the high-desert landscape and assimilating the features of the Southwest-style architecture, Fonda ensured that River House was sited and created to provide an elegant refuge with state24

nspired by their location in Western Montana’s beautiful Flathead Valley, James Bachofner and Brad Neu, owners of Kalispell Montana Log Homes, have been building log homes of just about every size and shape imaginable since 1975. Their craftsmen preserve the spirit of the Old West by using handcrafting techniques handed down from generation to generation to create homes that are as unique and beautiful as the Rocky Mountains from which they come. General Contractor Dennis Cozzetti summed up the craftsmanship of Kalispell Montana Log Homes: “… impressed is an understatement. While I have done a number of log cabins with different companies, none even come close to the outstanding product that Kalispell Montana Log Homes delivers. It’s like comparing a Ferrari to a Volkswagen…” These amazing log structures have been delivered from Presque Isle, Maine to Heaven’s Landing in Georgia and from Big Bear Lake, California to Valdez, Alaska, and all points in between. One of the most exciting aspects of any project is when your one-of-a-kind log home enters the design phase!
