The yacht is designed to accommodate a crew of seven, with the commander’s cabin located on the upper deck as the tradition of longrange cruising vessels demands. It also comes equipped with Benetti’s Exclusive Sea Technology (BEST), which integrates all onboard electronic systems into a single, user-friendly interface.

A New Currency Emerges Global Investors Seek out Rare and Unique Ultra-Luxury Real Estate

W

hen the cracks began to show in the seemingly unbreakable boom that was the U.S. housing market, smart money — as is often the case — ran for shelter in an effort to insulate itself from the coming doom. That’s the thing about smart money: it stays around, it’s prepared and it tends to grow when times are tough for the broad markets. Just like a diamond created under pressure, it comes out much more valuable if given the proper amount of time. Nowhere else is this paradigm more evident than in the global luxury real estate market, where smart money, savvy investment and the creation of the world’s rarest properties have created a new kind of currency.

The luxury real estate market, never stronger or more vibrant with cash buyers from all over the globe, provides tangible wealth and cachet unmatched by a simple stock portfolio. When the U.S. housing bubble burst, the value of the U.S. dollar fell dramatically, strengthening other currencies. This provided foreign investors with large “discountsâ€? when purchasing property in U.S. dollars. And, even though U.S. bonds were downgraded from their AAA rating in August of 2011, the U.S. market has still been considered to be a safe haven for investment. Witness to the World Photojournalist Michael Christopher Brown Puts Conflict in Focus By Karen Brost

W

hile growing up in the quiet farming community of Skagit Valley in Washington State, Michael Christopher Brown eagerly awaited the moment when his father, a physician, would return home from a trip overseas with photos that he took. “We just could not wait to see what he had seen,” Brown describes. Little did he know that his boyhood curiosity about the world would eventually lead to a successful career as a photojournalist. Today, Brown is always on the road, living out of a backpack most of the year, on a constant quest to capture images of people, places and situations few would ever YHQWXUH WR VHH IRU WKHPVHOYHV ³7KRXJK , KDYH SKRWRJUDSKHG LQ SODFHV RI FRQÀLFW OLNH Afghanistan, Libya and the Democratic Republic of Congo, I have also been drawn to street photography in places such as Russia, India, China and Mexico,” he explains.

Brown has worked as a contributing photographer at National Geographic magazine since 2005, and his work has also been featured in Time, Newsweek, Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times and Smithsonian magazine, among many others. What professional photographer (or photographer who takes ‘good’ pictures) uses a phone to take pictures? That possibility has not entered the public mind, though that is beginning to change.â€? Brown was also recently commissioned by Time Magazine and the New York Times Magazine to take over their Instagram feeds. “This meant I was hired not only as a photographer but as an editor, taking pictures, then moments later selecting which images would be seen by hundreds of thousands of subscribers. I also contribute to the National Geographic magazine Instagram feed, as one of NGM’s contributing photographers.â€? He described the appeal of working with this form of social media. “When I am working for publications with hundreds of thousands or millions of followers on Instagram, it is that ability to almost instantaneously communicate what I see with a large audience, and to have a dialogue with them, which is empowering, direct and lends itself to more effective and targeted reporting.â€?

But this isn’t Miami Beach’s Basel. Or even Basel’s Basel. This is Hong Kong’s Basel, and its entry onto the crowded list of international art fairs has collectors, artists and dealers abuzz with the potential for widening of East-West partnerships and the cachet the Art Basel brand will bring to the Hong Kong art scene. It would be great to see Hong Kong follow that same path. There is a lot of opportunity there for us all — for collectors to get to know galleries that they wouldn’t otherwise know because they don’t come to New York or Miami or Basel, and on the other foot, for us to get to know them and to introduce them to the artists that we represent that they might not know.â€? there will be people that will look at the opportunity to go to the Art Basel Hong Kong in the future as a good reason to plan a trip to Hong Kong,â€? he posits. “And I also foresee people in that part of the world, in that region, saying, ‘Gee, let’s go see what Miami Beach is like.’ It gives people a reason to go and make a 12 to 14 hour trip. The aspect of drawing new people to Miami Beach is very wonderful, I think.â€? New Ideas and New Inspirations Over the months leading up to any Art Basel show, Art Basel press materials emphasize the dual roles the fairs play, as both the world’s leading art market venues and as learning environments for “discovery and appreciationâ€? of regional cultures and histories, ripe with opportunities for “new ideas and new inspirations.â€? It is art fair as cultural festival, an idea pioneered by Art Basel, and one which has been a constant both in its eponymous show in Basel, Switzerland and in its sister show in Miami Beach. “I think it goes to the more important aspect of cultures being shared,â€? says Goodman, “people from different cultures all over the world meeting and socializing and getting to know each other.â€? But perhaps nowhere has the art fair as cultural festival philosophy grabbed center stage attention quite as it has in the run up to Art Basel in Hong Kong. The Wealth Of Data 5 Things to Consider About Your Most Valuable Asset - Your Data BY SCOTT WALCHEK

n one minute (roughly the time it will take you to read this paragraph) online: 204 million emails are sent, 20 million photos are viewed, 2+ million searches are conducted on Google, 1.3 million videos are viewed on YouTube and 100,000 new tweets are sent. And this incomprehensible activity is projected to expand exponentially as the number of connected devices grows to double that of the world’s population by 20151. With this rapid expansion in connectivity comes another growth of even greater ferocity — the mass and value of your personal data. The truth is, behind the glossy exterior of some of our favorite online platforms and points of sale, ϐ ϐ Ǥ Dz dz interactions is being paid elsewhere, where our data is mined and studied often in order to create highly-targeted advertising or other ϐ Ǧ Ǥ All of the interactions in your connected life leave a personal trail of data that is both increasingly revealing and, to some, remarkably valuable. We are constantly clicking Like, Share, Comment, Bid, Buy, Rate, Recommend, but we rarely give thought to where that wealth of data goes, or how it is being used by the services on which we pour out our digital souls. ϐ Ǥ Massive data brokerage companies like Acxiom and T-Sys are just two of hundreds of enterprises who are peering into your personal life, collecting data that is generated from everything you do online and much of what you do in the real world. And by generating billions Dz dz Ǥ Ǥǡ ϐ connected universe. Moreover, this is just a fraction of the evolving — some say loosely regulated — big-data industry now valued at over $300B a year and employing three million people in the United States alone, according to the McKinsey Global Institute. 1: www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/communications/internet-minute-infographic.html

CRUISING ALTITUDE TECHNOLOGY

“All the interactions in your connected life leave a personal trail of data that is both increasingly revealing and, to some, remarkably valuable.” Unlike the national Do Not Call List, which gives consumers a one-stop location to have their telephone numbers removed from telemarketing databases, personal data collection and marketing Ǧ Ǥ ϐ consider when thinking about the protection of your online data: 1. First, value your data. Most of us would consider our cars one of our more prized possessions. We care for them, insure them and protect them from harm. Now think, as of this writing, the combined market capitalization of the world’s three leading auto manufacturers — General Motors, Volkswagen, and Toyota — is an astonishing $287B. By comparison, however, it’s revealing that the combined market capitalization of Facebook, Google, and China’s search giant Baidu is over $350B. What is so remarkable about this comparison

is that these Internet leaders achieve their results by selling the information collected from the data trail you leave when you use their services. We rarely stop to think about the value of our data, but many experts theorize that shortly we will be able to personally monetize our private data storehouse. If the capital markets value companies so highly for using your data, we should begin to consider its inherent value, as well. 2. Follow the money. Free, really isn’t. While it may seem too simplistic to consider the way a company makes money when thinking about your data, it is at the very core of the data privacy narrative. The most obvious test to determine the degree of personal data exploitation is the “implied business model” test. If you use a site for “free,” but it is littered with advertising, then it is highly likely that they are using your interactions with their content to increase advertising rates (advertisers will always pay more when they can more clearly determine the precise target of their ads). Examples

76

I

JetsetMag.com

of this practice are prevalent almost everywhere: the next time you check your free Hotmail or Gmail online, look to see if there are ǡ ϐ the content of the private email you are reading. 3. Police the policy. Who owns your data? There are generally ǣ ϐ from monthly or annual subscription fees. Another is “free” to use ϐ Ǥ an offender of proffering your personal data (preferences, contact details, behaviors). While there may be a blend of free and paid options, another means of discerning how a service will use your data is in their policy statement. When you sign up to use an online service, you are agreeing to an End User License Agreement that

makes the rules by which you’re engaging with their service. In most cases, these agreements (or similar policy statements) will indicate the extent to which the company whose service you are using will Ǥ ǡ ϐ Ǥ will tell you that when you use their service you give them the right to do anything with both the data they collect about your site visit (where you click, how long you’re spending on each page you view, how many pages you view, how frequently you return, etc.) and the content you post on their site. But sometimes this distinction is not clear. Take Facebook, for example. While they make it clear that you own the data you post to their site (photos, videos, comments, and other posts), they also indicate that they can use that data in whatever way they please. 4. Know your data’s health and whereabouts. Security technology must evolve just to stay ahead of those determined to break it; today’s assurances of data safety and privacy are tomorrow’s

GET ENERGIZED. GO BEYOND. Make “Go Beyond” Your New Mantra By Barry Labov

very company, every person, every organization has a mantra whether they realize it or not. It might be “simple is better” or “make every moment count” or “live every day like it’s your last.” Whatever it might be, we’re guided by our mantras in life. For me, it’s “go beyond.” That can mean anything from going beyond the expected to going beyond the challenge to going beyond the safe. Going beyond can not only be energizing, it can make what you do each and every day all the more meaningful. You can see and feel the energy that’s generated when people go beyond. I used to be in the music business, kind of. I wrote jingles — those irritating little 30-second ditties that you couldn’t get out of your head. I would record singers who would try out for the honor of singing a particular jingle. I knew something was magical when I felt energy from their performance, when I could see they were taking it beyond. I actually felt uplifted. I was transformed. Technically, that singer may have missed a few notes or had some imperfections, but there was something about the performance. Listen to the song “I Won’t Back Down” by Tom Petty. I feel great energy from that performance and message, but technically, Petty’s singing could be far better. That’s the energy that comes when someone goes beyond.

They move past their fear every time they embark on a new adventure. If they let their fear stop them, they’d never realize the energy and adrenaline rush that comes from pushing the boundaries. In business, going beyond can be a challenge. It’s easy to get bogged down in day-to-day details, processes and rules. That’s when you risk losing site of going beyond. You focus on just getting one task done only to move on to the next. You become an order-taker. It’s hard to be energized by that. But when you take the time to strategize and come up with ways to go beyond what you’re asked to do, that’s when it gets interesting. I worked with a luxury company that was introducing a new technology for their product. They realized they had all the plans in

CRUISING ALTITUDE INSPIRE But, you may ask, what underlies or determines this difference between the short- and long-term thinkers or possibly between the immediately gratifying gamblers and the long-term investors? This answer demands a deeper look at the basics of human behavior and particularly, the motivations, inspirations or drives behind all human thought and action. According to the Stanford University marshmallow experiment conducted forty years ago referring to a series of studies on deferred ϐ ǡ offered a choice between one small reward (a marshmallow, cookie, or pretzel) provided immediately, or two small rewards if they waited until the experimenter returned about 15 minutes later, ϐ better. These studies offer insights into human behavior and demonstrate the difference between the two life strategies — short ϐ Ǧ Ȅ Ǥ

“In follow-up studies, the researchers found that the children who were able to wait longer for the preferred rewards tended to have greater life outcomes, as measured by a series and variety of life measures.” Just as for the children above, adults also tend to live their lives by different time horizons, or degrees of patience. This is primarily due to the unique set of values or priorities they hold and the actions that they feel are most to least important in their lives. These unique sets of values ultimately determine each of their short- or long-term strategies and destinies. Every decision an adult makes is determined by what they feel will give them the greatest advantage over disadvantage and greatest reward over risk at any moment in time. Therefore, each of their hierarchy of values will ǡ ϐ Ǥ that are congruent with their highest priorities or values, they increase the probability of taking meaningful actions and achieving

Singing, dancing, acting, hosting, producing, writing — Reba does and has done it all. “I love to perform,â€? she tells Jetset. “I love to entertain people and I love to BE entertained. I love to act. I do this while I’m on stage singing and on the TV shows. Writing is a major accomplishment for me when I write a song! It’s not very often that I do this and I accept it as a

I have met so many people through them that are the biggest-hearted people I know. Some you would recognize and some you wouldn’t. But God does — stars in their crown!â€? What’s next for Reba to accomplish? Before you can answer that question, you have to ask yourself another. What makes you think someone with a Midas touch, records of gold, and an alwaysevolving sterling silver brand would ever even consider slowing down? “Like Dolly (Parton) said, “Then what would I do?â€? I love to go on vacations, but we’re always scheming and plotting about what we’re going to do next while we’re on vacation,â€? One of the biggest career crushers for entertainers is an inability to adapt. Whether it’s to new trends, new audiences, new wealth, new life experiences, new attention, new technology or new consumer habits, history is riddled with thousands of careercrushed corpses. In fact, it’s the norm, and it’s also the complete opposite of Reba’s career. Literally, there are millions of people ™Š‘ Â?Â?‘™ ‡„ƒ ‘Â?Ž› ĥ ƒÂ? A career that’s constantly on center stage and under the bright stage lights of performing means Reba constantly has opportunities to be around people that she’s a fan of, as well, which isn’t always as great as it might seem. “I’ve always been leery of meeting my heroes and people I admire, being afraid that they would turn out to be an asshole. There’s nothing worse,â€? she admits. “I’m a fan of big-hearted people. People who give of their time, their money and

know what you could do?’ (When he says that) I always know it’s gonna be a good idea.â€? Thankfully, most of those good ideas have become available for all of us to enjoy. When you check the internal wiring and circuitry of ultra-successful people like Reba and the readers of Jetset, the people that create and perform and build and dream and heal and Â?ƒÂ?‡ ˜‹•‹‘Â?• „‡…‘Â?‡ Â”Â‡ÂƒÂŽÂ‹Â–Â›ÇĄ ›‘—ǯŽŽ Ď?‹Â?† ƒÂ? ‹Â?–‡”Â?ƒŽ †”‹˜‡ –Šƒ– ‹• well beyond rare. Some of the most desirable automobiles were unveiled this year. O

n a beautiful, sun-soaked, crystal-clear day recently, some fortunate members of the Jetset Magazine executive team boarded the Jetset luxury bus and embarked on a journey 35 miles due south of the magazine headquarters. hat constitutes luxury design? Personal life experiences and preferences will create individualistic responses. “Getting to know my clients’ aspirations and history helps me create an ‹Â?–‡”‹‘” ‡Â?˜‹”‘Â?Â?‡Â?– –Šƒ– ™”ƒ’• –Š‡Â? ‹Â? –Š‡‹” †‡Ď?‹Â?‹–‹‘Â? ‘ˆ Ž—š—”› and resonates with who they are.â€? Anita Lang, owner and principal designer of IMI continues: “Clients’ dreams run the gamut: from boutique closets with shoe storage for a thousand pairs to hidden TV built-ins everywhere through the house.â€? There are, however, four main principals that remain consistent throughout luxury design. Quality. In contrast to automated, mass produced pieces is the luxury of hand crafted, bespoke custom items from true craftsmen and artisans executing a work of art that will last for years to come. Design Integrity. While design styles may vary from client to client, design principals of scale, proportion, color theory and balance create timeless beauty and relevance applicable to every taste. Sensory Design. Luxury is not only creating a feast for the eyes but for all the senses. Wonderful aromas, varied tactile sensations from soft to smooth and of course peace stimulating sounds or music should all be engaged. Lang concludes, “A lost opportunity for excellence is one of the most disheartening events in life. When my clients engage me for a project, either new construction or a remodel, I make sure not to miss a chance to improve their experience by incorporating both grand and subtle luxury into everyday life.â€?
