raveling with your valuables just became easier, thanks to an innovative new high-security traveling case handcrafted by Döttling, D *HUPDQ FRPSDQ\ UHQRZQHG IRU WKH ¿QHVW ORFNVPLWK DUWLVDQU\ since 1919. Measuring just 14.5 inches with a diameter of 5.3 inches, the Guardian is spacious enough to protect up to six watches, jewelry, cash or important documents, yet compact enough to be carried by hand or placed in a suitcase.

The Guardian’s true genius lies in its security features. At one end, there is a safe door with a locking mechanism consisting of four polished highcarbon steel locking bolts that can only be opened with a three-digit code. The double-walled tube is crafted of hard metal and polycarbonate (also used for police shields) to provide protection that is no match for drills, saws or sledgehammers. A thief wouldn’t have much time to attempt it anyway, thanks to the built-in GPS transmitter that can pinpoint the Guardian’s precise location.

Uncovering the Soul of Sonoma County BY HERMINE BAKER

“This is an opportunity to experience the very best Sonoma County has to offer.” - Jean-Charles Boisset of Boisset Family Estates

O

nce known primarily as Napa Valley’s more laid back neighbor, Sonoma County has been coming into its own lately. Fifteen distinct wine growing regions, 60 miles of coastline and a new generation of top-rated wines and restaurants recently prompted TripAdvisor to name it the number one wine destination in the United States. In quaint towns like Healdsburg, a new, more modern breed of luxury hotel, restaurant, and shop has quietly been springing up — somehow without disturbing the special ϐ Ǥ Sonoma County has been upgrading so much, in fact, that Hermine Baker was inspired to create a luxury tour company to showcase all it has to offer these days — one based on her deep connections within the region and special knowledge of it. “I’m privileged to know some of the most interesting and powerful winemakers and vineyard owners in Sonoma and I love giving my clients a backstage pass to their world,” says Baker. “I also love introducing travelers to the particular magic and soulfulness of this place,” she adds. “Sonoma has so much to offer the luxury traveler: exquisite wineries, hotels, shops and spas, but there’s an authenticity here, too, and I think that’s directly connected to the land. The beauty of the landscape is a big part of what allows people to feel so relaxed

and rejuvenated here. It’s the best of both worlds.” Hermine gives her guests plenty of chances to access both worlds, too. One day, they might be on a helicopter tour culminating in a sumptuous private lunch on the grounds of an estate winery. The other, they might be ziplining through the pristine Armstrong Redwoods. Her overarching mission is to attend to every detail, so they don’t have to arrange a thing. “Our guests tend to lead busy lives, so when they travel with us, we want to make sure every detail has been taken care of for them. I really enjoy giving them everything they need to relax, unwind and enjoy,” says Baker. “This is an opportunity to experience the very best Sonoma County has to offer,” explains Jean-Charles Boisset of Boisset Family Estates. “Hermine knows some of the most interesting and powerful winemakers in the region, has impeccable attention to detail with an irresistible charm and style, as well as a deep understanding of the needs of the luxury traveler.” ǯ ϐ Ǥ Born in Sweden, she was raised in one of the country’s most beautiful castles — Marsvinsholm Slott — and as a child traveled to resorts and hotels all over the world. When she was a teenager, her father — an oenophile — invited her to start tasting and

appreciating wine with dinner and over the years, Baker developed a surpassing knowledge of different varietals and winemaking styles. In addition to a thorough knowledge of wine, winemaking and wine and food pairing, she’s also an expert skydiver with more than 1,500 jumps under her belt. “I love accompanying my guests ǡdz Ǥ Dz ϐ Ǥdz In addition to its “Seven Perfect Days” package for small groups of people, Atmani Tours offers customized and à la carte travel services for business travelers, families, couples, singles and friends. Popular services include airport meet-and-greet, private wine tastings and winemaker dinners, as well as adventurecentric experiences such as bicycle, helicopter, and horseback riding tours as well as ziplining through redwoods. Baker named the tour company “Atmani” after a Sanskrit word meaning “pure state of the soul” and believes Sonoma County offers travelers a uniquely powerful way to connect with that state. “Sonoma County exudes a serenity and welcoming energy that touches all the senses,” says Baker. “Artists come from all over the world to paint here because of the exquisite light. The light alone would be enough to make this place special, but there are a thousand other things, too. I feel so lucky to be able to introduce travelers to this place.”

Jewel Of The Desert For over eight decades, the iconic Arizona Biltmore has hosted the world’s powerful and famous By TOM ZENNER

n a renowned resort area like Phoenix/Scottsdale, there are a lot of properties that would love to be considered the “Jewel of the Desert,â€? yet there is only one that for decades has laid claim to the title. Since it opened in 1929, the Arizona Biltmore has combined exceptional service, a rich history, world-class accommodations and just an omnipresent aura of style and importance that you feel in the hallowed halls of the property. The star power of the resort itself and the A-List roster of world leaders, glamorous Hollywood stars, athletes and entertainers who have stayed at the resort since it opened reads like a Who’s Who list of the biggest names in pop culture. BARCELONA, SPAIN STAY: MANDARIN ORIENTAL

his vibrant, cosmopolitan seaport city seemingly has it all — art, culture, beautiful beaches and equally beautiful people. As Spain’s second largest city and the capital of Catalonia, Barcelona is a true feast for the eyes. The city is world-renowned for the innovative, modernist architecture of Antoni Gaudi. Two of his works, Sagrada Familia and the house-turned-museum Casa Batilo, are among his most famous. Barcelona also a walkable city offering plenty of outdoor markets, restaurants, museums, bars and boutiques to enjoy, not to mention impromptu performances by street musicians. One of the city’s top shopping destinations is the Passeig de Gracia, an elegant boulevard lined with upscale boutiques and stunning architecture. While there is certainly no shortage of international cuisine to enjoy in Barcelona, no trip to the city would be complete without experiencing authentic Catalan cooking, the most important ingredients of which have been described as “olive oil, garlic, sun and patience.” Visitors will also do well to follow the example of the locals who love to go “de tapeo” — enjoying an informal evening at their favorite tapas

THE IDYLLIC CARIBBEAN PARADISE BY DOUG SINGER

O

ne fateful day in 1684, Sir Christopher Codrington, an early and enterprising entrepreneur, came to Antigua to discover if the island would support the sort of large ϐ in the Caribbean. His initial efforts proved to be quite successful, and industrial Antigua was born. By the middle of the 18th century, the island was dotted with more than 150 cane-processing windmills, each the focal point of a sizable plantation. Today, almost 100 of these picturesque stone towers still remain, although thankfully, they now serve as houses, bars, restaurants and shops. I ventured to the beautiful island of Antigua to explore some ϐ Ȅ ϐ is exactly what was delivered. Since 1962, Antigua’s Curtain Bluff, a classic Caribbean resort that is well suited to those looking for a bit of a social scene and a wide array of activities, has never lost its original intimacy and charm. Proprietor Chelle Hulford still lives on the top of the hill in Bluff House, greeting guests like old friends and hosting the resort’s weekly cocktail party at her home. This is a type of intimacy and innate hospitality that seems to seep from every pore of this landmark location. Flanked by water on both sides, Curtain Bluff sits perched above the surf and juts into the sea between two beautiful beaches

The resort offers two restaurants: the open-walled Tamarind Tree serving breakfast and candlelit dinners, and the Beach Café & Bar, where barefoot-casual lunches are enjoyed just steps from the sand and the inviting water’s edge. Of note is the ʹͲǡͲͲͲ Ȅ ǯ and most impressive. High above the harbor and easily accessible by car or on foot via the Lookout Trail, Shirley Heights, a former fortress and now a live music venue, offers superb views across the Caribbean to Montserrat and Guadaloupe. Next it was on to The Inn at English Harbour. Elegant and exclusive, The Inn offers the perfect balance of Colonial-style building and luxurious, contemporary comfort. With only 28 rooms dotting an impeccably-landscaped 19 acres, there is a real sense of privacy and seclusion. Perhaps this is why it was recently visited by the Prince and Princess of Monaco, who, in fact, were so enamored with a couple of the staff members, that they invited ǯ Ȅ that was happily accepted.

With a serene white sand beach and the whisper of English Harbour’s cooling trade winds, true relaxation is in abundance. All of the rooms are well appointed with a spacious private veranda and the charm and sophistication that you might expect from a hotel bearing their moniker. With well above par dining, a spa and a nice array of water sports, you won’t feel the need to stray far, but if you feel like exploring, jump onto the water taxi for a threeminute ride to Nelson’s Dockyard. Built in the seventeenth century, Nelson’s Dockyard is the largest of Antigua’s National Parks and is still a working dockyard for numerous yachts and ships, as well as home to Antigua’s famed Sailing Week. Fully restored to their original splendor, eighteenth-century buildings house modern amenities such as shops, hotels and traditional marina businesses, and just outside, historic forts dot the landscape. Moving on, we boarded a private ferry for a seven-minute ride to the famed Jumby Bay, as this private island is accessible only by boat. Situated on 300 gorgeously manicured acres, Jumby Bay offers an opulence that shines brightly. This exclusive resort is pristine at every turn and is a naturalists dream, as the level of

Add to that three powder soft white sand beaches, world-class hospitality and a reputation for providing discerning travelers with distinguished amenities and you may start to understand why in 2012 alone, Jumby Bay was honored with accolades that include the AAA FiveDiamond Award, Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report Grand Award and Travel + Leisure’s 500 World’s Best. Dining at Jumby Bay is indeed special, and the four available choices, including The Verandah, The Pool Grille and The Beach Bar will certainly keep the budding epicurean on their toes. If it is the pinnacle of relaxation that beckons you, Sense, A Rosewood Spa® at Jumby Bay, offers an elegant, open-air sanctuary that embraces the stunning natural surroundings. With a choice of exotic treatments with names like the Island Embrace and the Sea Coral & Coconut Ritual, all of your senses will be heightened and a Zen-like peacefulness virtually ensured. Christopher Columbus landed here. The Lignum Vitae, or “tree of life,” grew here. Emancipated slaves gained freedom early here. The island has been claimed by royalty, possessed by smugglers, and in 1915, owned by an unusually free-spirited, pipe-smoking woman. When it was a private estate, partygoers waded into the surf at night carrying lanterns, scooping up lobsters for dinner. Elegant women with skirts hoisted, gentlemen with clenched cigars . . . laughing and chasing lobsters in what is still the clearest water in the Caribbean. The island has always been provocative, coaxing its visitors to live large and sensually. This spirit persists at Jumby Bay in a setting that is unearthly in its beauty and captivatingly human in character.

PRIVÉ SOCIETY Offering Exclusive Access to the Finest Things in Life BY TOM ZENNER

I

f you want a snapshot example of what success looks like, Jetset witnessed it firsthand when we arrived at the beautifully crafted, meticulously-decorated, custom-built home on the Country Club of the South outside downtown Atlanta. Here, a talented, hardworking, savvy and smart former NFL standout that played in the Super Bowl and has now segued into becoming a successful businessman lives with his young family. Some details that immediately catch a sports fan’s eyes in the home are the framed jerseys signifying significant NFL milestones, the trophies marking achievement that earned him millions of dollars playing the game he grew up loving. But what stands out as the most impressive detail on display is the calm and calculating demeanor and sophistication Ellis Hobbs emanates, especially when he’s discussing business or describing the business he founded and runs with fellow former professional athlete Michael Dean. Together, they own and operate Privé Society, a private membership group dedicated to meeting the desires and necessities of

power, when it comes to expensive and rare automobiles, fine jewelry, real estate and other luxury items, they oftentimes attain much better pricing. And then comes the unparalleled world-class personal service Privé Society provides. An example of how their service works would be if a client were looking for a particular exotic car, like a Ferrari with a particular color and mileage limit. Not only will Privé Society find the car wherever it may be located, but because of the volume of cars they purchase for clients, they will be able to get it most times at a significantly lower price. Next, they will arrange transport of the vehicle, and deliver it to the door of their member within days. Privé Society also works in brand development and endorsements, and thanks to the extensive financial background of Ellis’ partner and co-founder Michael Dean, financial and legal services, as well. Another impressive aspect of Privé Society is how Ellis and Michael have built the company — with the same characteristics and work ethic needed to become big time athletes. When you spend

professional athletes and high net worth individuals with ideal access and convenience. As Ellis told Jetset, Privé Society exists to allow people with affluent lifestyles to have direct access to the things they want. “We cater to a privileged, successful, affluent audience core that not only appreciates and demands the finer things in life, but wants access to them around the clock with no hassles or complications.” Simply put, Privé Society opens the doors of incredible access, unhinges the velvet rope, lays out a red carpet along the way and provides their clients with a guided entry into the good life. And providing value for their members is also a key priority for Ellis and his team at Privé Society. Because of their incredible reach and buying

time with Michael and Ellis, you realize how strategic each man has been to get to where he is now in his life and career. Each made a significant amount of money during his NFL career, but throughout it all, each man had an exit strategy in mind. As for Ellis, he used his time in meeting rooms with great leaders like Bill Belichick and Tom Brady trying to learn life lessons he could apply to his business career. Neither man was ever a pampered and delusional superstar, far from it. In fact, according to Ellis, each day he felt like he had to fight to earn and keep his job on the practice field. It’s that fire, that intensity, and that single-minded vision of wanting to be successful that fuels Privé Society now.

“PRIVÉ SOCIETY IS MOST BENEFICIAL TO BUSY, SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE WHO VALUE THEIR TIME AND THE CONVENIENCE WE OFFER.” - MICHAEL DEAN, PRIVÉ SOCIETY FOUNDER

“I love being a competitor. It’s in my blood,” says Hobbs. “The challenge with me is that people in the business world always try to put me in the sports space because that’s where they are used to seeing me. The test is to show them that I’m just as good, if not better, in their world. I have worked in every part of my company. I’ve operated all of our systems and, most importantly, I have used all the services we provide.” While professional athletes and entertainers are a big client base for Privé Society, they must also appeal to CEOs, successful business owners and tycoons. In fact, Privé Society specifically markets to those people with a dynamic, strategic game plan. One way is by appealing to a particular audience by having a targeted brand presence at major events like the Super Bowl, Art Basel, The Sundance Film Festival and the ESPYS award show. They also focus on proactive and targeted media relations, negotiate and execute endorsement deals and partnerships with notable athletes and player associations, and partner with luxury brands to create organic events, promotions and communication opportunities. It’s Privé Society’s plan for movers and shakers around the world to continue to see the Privé Society brand on the biggest

stages worldwide. They know how to seek out and find the perfect Privé Society member and client, because that is the world Michael and Ellis has lived in for a long time. “Privé Society is most beneficial to busy, successful people who value their time and the convenience we offer. We have a widely-based and eclectic membership of clients who value the range of products and services that we offer,” Michael tells Jetset. “We have members from all social classes and income groups, all of whom have joined because they share our philosophy of quality, style and service.” Does Ellis miss playing football? “Not the work, because it took a toll on my body,” he tells Jetset. “I do miss the spotlight of the stadium. I love the pressure. Not everyone can function while many are watching. Most people hate to make a mistake in front of someone else, but I love it. Pressure shows you exactly what the person is built of and whether or not they can handle the situation. The other thing I miss is the camaraderie. The bus rides and events, and the games and the jokes.” The days of fun and games are very much in the rearview mirror of these NFL retirees. Ellis and Michael certainly have a good time when

it’s called for, and their job demands it because of the glamorous and marquee events they attend with their members. But 2013 is a big year for Privé Society as they continue to grow and expand their services. “Currently, commissions drive 40 percent of our business on single transactions generated by potential members. We aim to shift to a subscriberdriven business model to stabilize cash flow and maximize growth,” says Michael. “Of our existing 1,500 database, we expect to convert 20 percent to monthly subscribers at varying levels,” Ellis explains. There isn’t a day that goes by where you won’t have the opportunity to read or hear a sad story about a former professional athlete who, through bad investments, stupidity, greed, injury or fraud has seen their hard-earned fortunes disintegrate. This is not one of those stories. No, the story of former New England Patriot and Philadelphia Eagles defensive back Ellis Hobbs and Carolina Panthers’ Michael Dean are a success story that continues to be written, and any high net worth or high-earning individual who wants access into sexy and exciting events and the ability to experience the good life in a better way will enjoy going along on the ride with them.

“Galleries are increasingly places to mount exhibitions that garner prestige rather than focus on selling.” - Kathy Battista, director of contemporary art at Sotheby's Institute of Art

Like in Miami, there’s a hierarchy to the New York art fairs — an upper echelon. But in New York, there’s no penultimate Basel equivalent, but rather three fairs that vie for the top: The Armory Show, The Art Show presented by the Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA) and Frieze New York. One show stands out among those in the next tier down, the buzz-worthy Independent fair. Unlike Miami, the New York fairs happen in spurts. The Armory ǡ ϐ Ǥ Frieze is held a few months later in early May. ϐ the 20th and 21st centuries from over 180 international galleries. It’s a behemoth of a show, but it’s manageable because it’s divided into three sections that take place at Pier 92 and Pier 94 at 55th street on Manhattan’s West Side. Pier 94 is dedicated to galleries showing new art by contemporary artists. Horowitz explains, “We made a ϐ ǡ and work with architects to improve the layout. People will see those improvements in 2013.” This year The Armory Show will pay tribute through a series of special events and lectures to the 100th anniversary of the 1913 Armory Show, which Christopher Knight of the Los Angeles Times recently referred to as, “. . . arguably the most famous art exhibition of the 20th century.” It was a controversial show that brought avantgarde European artists in front of an astounded U.S. audience with works like Marcel Duchamp’s 1912 painting, “Nude Descending a Staircase.” That show was the inspiration for the current show, which was founded in 1994. The title refers to the location of the 1913 show and the former location of the current show, the 69th Regiment Armory on Lexington Avenue. Horowitz has amassed a Centennial Committee that reads

like a who’s who list of the world’s top art collectors. He says, “We decided the committee should be principally collector-focused, ǯ Ǥ ǯ ϐ commitment. It’s more about creating a community and providing access to private collections.” The Art Show is celebrating an anniversary, too. Linda Blumberg, executive director of the ADAA, says, “This is our 25th anniversary year. We’re the oldest running art show in America.” The show is smaller than The Armory Show and different in scope. It features 72 dealers and galleries, only from the U.S., that present curated solo, two-person and thematic exhibitions. People often confuse The Art Show with The Armory Show because it’s located at the Park Avenue Armory, a beautiful Victorian building that’s in the midst of being restored, but the shows are quite different. Blumberg explains, “Ours is a boutique art show. We’ve never made it enormous or about the newest, latest greatest work coming out of studios. It’s always featured a cross-section of our membership.” Exhibitors are ADAA members, but not

all members are guaranteed a spot. “It’s quite competitive,” adds Blumberg. “We only have 72 booths and we get over 100 applicants.” The thoughtful curation at The Art Show provides a different visitor experience, perhaps a more manageable one. Adam Sheffer, a partner with Cheim Read and the show’s chairman for the past four years explains, “The decision by dealers to do curated booths evolved organically, but it’s made the fair distinct.” He adds, “Members have to submit a quality proposal. Some use their booths to complement their gallery show.” Sheffer will also participate again in Frieze New York in its second year. It’s held on Randall’s Island, which runs adjacent to the FDR Drive on the Upper East Side extending towards 125th Street in Harlem. The location was controversial, but Sheffer thinks it was a great idea. “I thought it was clever, fresh, exciting and an innovative choice,” he remarks. onserving land is a permanent decision that effects its use and value forever. Therefore, the process should be governed by intelligent decision-making from the beginning.

Here are the four key players you’ll need, and must-knows about each. Easement Holders There are usually two parties to a conservation restriction (CR): you (the landowner) and the easement holder.

.

Despite their conservation focus, easement holders are not your ƒ†˜‘…ƒ–‡ ƒÂ?† ƒ”‡ Â?‘– “—ƒŽ‹Ď?‹‡† –‘ ‘ˆˆ‡” ’”‘ˆ‡••‹‘Â?ƒŽ ƒ†˜‹…‡Ǥ ‘— need your own experienced advisor, or team of advisors (appraiser, ƒ––‘”Â?‡›ǥ ŽƒÂ?† ’ŽƒÂ?Â?‡”ǥ Ď?‹Â?ƒÂ?…‹ƒŽ ÂƒÂ†Â˜Â‹Â•Â‘Â”ČŒÇĄ –‘ Š‡Ž’ ›‘— Â?ƒÂ?‡ †‡…‹•‹‘Â?• that are in your best interest.

‡––‹Â?‰ –‘ ƒ Ď?‹Â?ƒŽ ‹• ƒ Â?‡‰‘–‹ƒ–‹‘Â? ’”‘…‡•• –Šƒ– –ƒÂ?‡• –‹Â?‡Ǥ Typically, the easement holder provides the initial draft for your review, which marks the beginning of the process. Expect several „ƒ…Â?ÇŚÂƒÂ?Â†ÇŚÂˆÂ‘Â”Â–ÂŠÇŻÂ• „‡ˆ‘”‡ ƒ Ď?‹Â?ƒŽ ˜‡”•‹‘Â? ‹• ƒ‰”‡‡† —’‘Â?Ǥ

.

If you intend to donate a CR and realize the value in the form of ƒ …Šƒ”‹–ƒ„Ž‡ ‰‹ˆ– †‡†—…–‹‘Â?ÇĄ …‘Â?Ď?‹”Â? –Šƒ– –Š‡ ‡ƒ•‡Â?‡Â?– Š‘Ž†‡” ‹• ƒÂ?

If you plan to donate the CR and want to take a charitable gift †‡†—…–‹‘Â?ÇĄ Â?ƒÂ?‡ •—”‡ –Š‡ ƒ’’”ƒ‹•‡” ‹• ÇŚÂ“Â—ÂƒÂŽÂ‹Ď?‹‡† ƒÂ?† ’”‡’ƒ”‡• ƒÂ? IRS-compliant appraisal.

Appraisers Determining the CR’s value is the job of a real estate appraiser.

Lawyers While it is not required, I strongly recommend that you hire an attorney. However:

.

Be certain the appraiser is competent to appraise CRs and your property type. For example, if you own 1,000 acres, the appraiser needs experience with sophisticated highest and best use analysis, including land planning and regulatory review. This is the crux of the appraisal; it is where the value is established. The appraisal •Š‘—Ž† Â?ƒš‹Â?‹œ‡ –Š‡ ˜ƒŽ—‡ ™‹–Š‘—– •ƒ…”‹Ď?‹…‹Â?‰ †‡ˆ‡Â?•‹„‹Ž‹–› ‹Â? the event of an audit.

. . Landowners often ask their attorney to select an appraiser and

‘– ƒŽŽ Žƒ™›‡”• ƒ”‡ …‘Â?’‡–‡Â?– ƒ„‘—– •Ǥ ‘— ™‹ŽŽ Â?‡‡† Ž‡‰ƒŽ counsel who specializes in this area. review their work for them. The trouble with this is that most lawyers are not appraisers, and are not equipped to manage or review an appraiser’s work.

.

Landowners also often rely on their lawyers to negotiate the terms of the CR with the easement holder on their behalf. The disadvantage of this is that a lawyer who isn’t also an appraiser specializing in this area will not be able to spot terms that have an impact on value. Financial Advisors ‡ ƒ„•‘Ž—–‡Ž› •—”‡ ›‘—” Ď?‹Â?ƒÂ?…‹ƒŽ ƒ†˜‹•‘” ‹• …‘Â?’‡–‡Â?– ƒ„‘—– –Š‡ tax code sections that relate to CR charitable donations and can ’”‘’‡”Ž› ‹Â?–‡‰”ƒ–‡ ›‘—” –ƒš Â?‡‡†•Ǥ ‘— †‘ Â?‘– ™ƒÂ?– –‘ Ď?‹Â?ƒŽ‹œ‡ –Š‡ „‡Ž‹‡˜‹Â?‰ ›‘— ƒ”‡ ‡Â?–‹–Ž‡† –‘ ƒ –ƒš †‡†—…–‹‘Â? ƒÂ?† –Š‡Â? Investors need to use local market providers to reduce submarket risk. t’s 2014 and as expected, your life is ever more mobile and essentially connected. As a collector, you are no stranger to the latest and best of what a global market has to offer. The map on your smartphone guides you to a “connected” gallery, and as you cross its threshold, you swipe your phone across a “check-in” sign on an elegant pedestal. In so doing, you share limited data about your art preferences to the proprietor who is instantly informed and tailors your visit with targeted recommendations, including inventory that isn’t on display. And so begins a personalized, rich experience as you start to stroll the gallery. The place has changed since you were last there. You immediately notice that it’s appreciably more open and welcoming since the new owner removed the bulky sales desks with their clumsy registers. The inventory has increased and is richly diverse due to the spatial redesign. Your experience feels more engaging as you

With each interaction, your phone lights up with a description of the piece, an insightful story about the artist, a summary of its provenance, photos of some non-obvious details, suggested price, and even title and property insurance options — should you consider a purchase. THE

TAX GAME Who Will Pay More? BY ROBERT KIYOSAKI WITH TAX ADVISOR TOM WHEELWRIGHT, CPA

hen it comes to politics, I do my best to take a neutral position, being more of an independent voter. That said, when I woke up the morning after the last Presidential election I felt sick. To me, the election was a statement on the economic condition of the American people. Simply said: Americans are becoming poorer. And, while I feel for them, I know taxing the rich will not improve their lives.

The GOP was pathetic. It was an election lost more than a win for the Democrats. The President out-maneuvered, out-schmoozed and out-classed Mitt Romney. It amazed me to see Mitt Romney apologize for his comments on the 47 percent of Americans who do not pay taxes. I realize that a percentage of the 47 percent do not pay taxes, legitimately, yet many could. While Romney was apologizing for his secretly taped comments, the President was pounding on the rich, the one percent, for not paying enough taxes. Nearly one half of all Americans pay nothing in taxes . . . and Obama pounds on the one percent. No wonder he won. I’m in good company, I suspect, in anticipating that in 2013 the rich will pay more taxes, the national debt will go up by trillions, the ϐ ǡ Medicare will move closer to going bust, the poor and middle class will be screwed, and your kids will pay the bill. That one percent of Americans will pay higher taxes, but not much. The rich have the resources to hire the best and brightest tax accountants and attorneys. The poor and middle class do not.

GREAT GENIUSES BY DR. JOHN DEMARTINI

Do we have a hidden, possibly dormant capacity to express great genius? Can we access this most inspiring, prodigious and gifted talent? Can studying the lives or at least the traits of other great geniuses help us awaken this dormant genius inside? The answer to all of these questions is yes.

Giorgio Vasari, when writing about Leonardo Da Vinci wrote: “Heaven sometimes sends us beings who represent not humanity alone but divinity itself, so that taking them as our models and imitating them, our minds and the best of our intelligence may approach the highest celestial spheres. JON BON JOVI CONCERTS, CAUSES AND COMMITMENT BY TOM ZENNER

W

hen it comes to selecting the most staggering accomplishment/ factoid in the career and life of a culturally iconic, hit-making, rockand-roll living legend named Jon Bon Jovi, ask yourself this: do you really remember a time when he wasn’t relevant on the world entertainment stage? Can you recall going more than a month without singing along to a song of his on the radio? Are you capable of naming even one small scandal he’s been part of in the past 30 years? While it’s easy to track — but hard to comprehend — the almost unfathomable number of record sales he has racked up with his band or by himself during the past 30 years, (over 130 million) and you can read in disbelief the tally of tours and shows he’s performed in three decades, either by himself or with his band mates (over 2,700), one thing you can’t keep score of or assign a number to is his ability to be cool to several generations of fans. And despite being recognized around the globe, he’s found a way to be basically ignored by paparazzi, gossip rags, an increasing waistline or a receding hairline. Simply put — Jon Bon Jovi looks good, but what he’s much more interested in now is doing good, and the New Jersey native is passionately involved in numerous projects near and dear to his heart. For instance, after being personally affected by Hurricane Sandy, he was front and center, helping the region recover both spiritually and physically. He not only toured the damage and devastation; he helped raise ̈́͹ͶǤͷ ϐ Ǥ

“WE CAN IS THE NAME OF THE FIRST SINGLE ON OUR NEW ALBUM, AND IN THAT SONG I POSE A QUESTION AS THINGS MOVE FORWARD IN THIS COUNTRY, INCREMENTALLY, MIND YOU, BUT NONETHELESS MOVING FORWARD.” - JON BON JOVI

There’s even substantial depth and meaning in the title of his new world concert tour called We Can. The title is a perfectly crafted example of a socially-conscious superstar who not only wants the world to be better, but who is someone who rolls up his sleeves and does, in most cases, more than his part in trying to make it that way. “We Can ϐ ǡ that song I pose a question as things move forward in this country, incrementally, mind you, but nonetheless moving forward. We collectively realized that there is no savior in government, no savior in the private sector, but the collaboration of both is what’s going to make the nation go forward,” he explains. He’s always willing to do more than his fair share to help make sure things continue to move forward. Given his involvement on the national stage (in addition to the entertainment kind), the question came up if he would ever consider running for anything. “Yeah, running from this interview right now if you bring up any more politics. Never happen. Never. I have no desire. I’m a singer in a rock band. I’m not politically motivated, and I’m not using any of this as a political statement. This record is not political. It’s socially conscious, very aware of the world in which we live. I’m not politically motivated and I’m not using any of this as a political statement. Enough of this partisan bickering. Enough of this nonsense. Enough of it’s us and them. It’s we.” Other than being asked about his political aspirations, another Jon Bon Jovi pet peeve is people who do nothing but complain about

a socioeconomic issue or topic. “When someone says, ‘look, I tried,’ ǯ Ǥ ϐ ǡ ǡ mad at Washington blah blah blah, then they ask ‘why should I (do anything)’? I say, ‘because we can.’ That’s the idea. That’s what it’s going to take to move the nation from here on out. That’s just the world in which we live. When people ask ‘When are you going to do it?’ my response is ‘What About Now,’ which is the name of the new record. What About Now.” More than a title, it’s a mantra for a social activist whose sincerity and passion is one of the big reasons he’s been so popular and successful for so long. Finding an A-list superstar who will ϐ meal in coach class, which is why attending a Bon Jovi concert is an experience you share with the man who has the spotlight on him. You leave the arena feeling like you were part of something special, not just someone who saw a show or performance. His

unbridled passion and love for his audience emanates from the stage and explodes on top of every adoring fan in arenas and stadiums around the world. There’s a physical pull that takes you out of your seat and demands that you scream, cheer, dance and sing along to almost every hit on the song list. He’s done so many shows that he no longer gets nervous before the lights come up, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to make each one more memorable than the last. Dz ǯ ϐ Ǥ corner; this is where you come out when the bell rings,” he says. “So when the house lights are out and the intro of the show starts, I’ll be in the dressing room in this curtained off area, and on the wall hangs a picture of Frank Sinatra. This season, designers turn to a range of colors for a brilliant effect. BY SONDRA BARR

W

hen it comes to fashion, it’s easy to play it safe with neutrals. But spring’s unabashedly highwattage tones aren’t for the risk averse. Vibrant color takes center stage this season, as designers embrace eye-catching brights. From pops of cobalt and emerald, magenta and mulberry, to entire ensembles in citrine and nectarine, the audacious shift towards color demands attention. There is no denying wearing color from head-to-toe is an audacious trend, yet for a true fashion follower, nothing compares to making a bold entrance. With this in mind, menswear brands Brioni, Ermenegildo Zegna, Thomas Pink, and Stefano Ricci have taken sartorial cues from spring 2013 womenswear collections from the likes of Burberry, Vera Wang, Rachel Zoe, and Michael Kors to bring a refreshed depth and range to their latest threads. From airy cardigans, tapered trousers, lightweight jackets, and traditional suits with a twist, designers have literally reworked key pieces into highly covetable items that are the perfect expression of spring’s color crush.

BRIONI A departure from seasons past, Italian menswear label Brioni gravitated towards a kaleidoscope of unexpected hues designed to appeal to a well-heeled crowd seeking clothing for gentlemanly pursuits. Brioni first presented their spring/summer 2013 collection in the picturesque gardens of Milan’s La Triennale to create portraits of men leisurely unwinding amidst nature on a balmy Sunday afternoon. The tone of Brioni’s latest collection is set with the Jardigan, a garment envisioned as a modern rendition of a 1960s lapel-less cardigan fashioned from fine wool crepe in a warm ochre tone that evokes the Tuscan countryside at sunset. Not to stray too far from its storied heritage of expert tailoring and craftsmanship, Brioni’s collection showstopper is a classic suit reimagined in cherry red, which perfectly illustrates the modern evolution of this beloved brand. brioni.com

On-the-spot donations raised $244,500 for the Lunch Boxes of Love fund-a-need lot that will provide meals for thousands of hungry children and their families. The top wine lot fetched $180,000 for a rare 65-bottle complete vertical of Château Mouton Rothschild Artist Label series housed in a custom-made display table. This year’s festival was themed “When Stars Align,â€? a nod to the many stars who participate in the festival and the children who are “rising starsâ€? thanks to the generosity of those under the auction tent and other supporters. The festival is the fundraising arm of Naples Children & Education Foundation (NCEF) and is ranked by Wine Spectator as the most successful charity wine auction in the nation since 2004. NCEF trustee Bob Edwards, festival chair with his wife, Terry, summed up the auction: “The stars aligned today in a constellation of generosity. We are enormously grateful to everyone under the auction tent for sharing their treasure so our most vulnerable children can reach their potential.â€?

NEARLY $109 MILLION IN COLLECTIBLE CARS SOLD Barrett-Jackson Auction Company’s 42nd annual Arizona auction held at WestWorld of Scottsdale in January attracted 300,000 attendees and generated nearly $109 million in gross sales of rare, high-end collectible vehicles, exotics, customs, classics, hot rods and resto-mods. The 2013 Scottsdale auction set two world records with the largest number of no reserve vehicles offered at one auction, as well as the largest-ever Barrett-Jackson auction measured by the number of cars sold — 1,343. The auction also set two world records for individual vehicle sales: a 1956 Chrysler Diablo Concept Convertible sold for $1.375 million and a 1947 Talbot-Lago T-26 Grand Sport sold for $2.035 million. This year also brought the largest offering of Shelby vehicles at one event in honor of one of the world’s greatest automotive icons, Carroll Shelby. Forty-eight Shelby automobiles were auctioned off at no reserve including a 1966 Shelby GT350 Fastback which sold for $225,000. Sales within the auction’s Salon Collection included rare Hollywood icons such as the 1966 Original #1 Batmobile by renowned customizer, George Barris, which sold at an astonishing $4.62 million. Clark Gable’s breathtaking 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe sold for $2.035 million. The right brain obviously guides Grahm’s inner colorist whose paintings arrest the viewer sometimes in shades of eye-popping fuchsia and chartreuse, while the left brain oversees the mathematical precision that is often a linchpin of her work. “They’re very arithmetical and I think that the linear designs almost give one the feeling of creating order in the chaos, Grahm says of some of her works. “They’re not exactly patterns, but there’s a certain organization in these linear pieces that it’s almost like I’m trying to impose order in my own life or something. “I like the very loose, amorphic pieces as well, but when you have geometry there’s a feeling of harmony. After the last NAVEL expo, we were unsure if we were still attending, then I received this email from Alex Lubarsky, the organizer. “Perhaps all the events we did over the last 10 years were simply in preparation for this post-Sandy NAVEL expo. As people look for some semblance of normalcy, hope and optimism, your inspiring message and contagious positive attitude is just what the doctor ordered! ǡ ϐ November, and it was only a glitch with the hotel that forced us to change the date for the 18th. If one believes in divine intervention, then we have to assume that today more than ever, there is a great purpose for your message, and a tremendous importance to this particular NAVEL expo. Thank you for being a part of it!”
