THE BIG GAME

GET READY FOR THE 2012 WASTE MANAGEMENT OPEN BY JOHN STAHLSCHMIDT, PGA

T

he 2012 PGA Tour is under way and a favorite stop for the players continues to be the Waste Management Phoenix Open. This event, hosted by TPC Scottsdale, has a long history that dates back to the inception of the PGA Tour. With a payout of more than $1 million, a victory here will go a long way in solidifying a great year for the eventual winner. So what makes this tournament a favorite of the very best in the world? Is it the large galleries? The throng of 25,000-plus fans who are hungry to see the greats tee it up on hole 16, the “loudest hole in golf? Regardless of the answer, these players must navigate an always challenging 7,216-yard, par 71 venture that is the TPC Scottsdale. So what is the recipe for success? I have broken down some key holes that will test the players, as well as given you a “how to tutorial on some of the challenging shots that lie ahead.

fairway, as well as large moguls and deep rough on the left-hand side. This hole is rarely shown on television, but a par here will go a long way in getting the round off to a good start. How to hit it long and straight with your driver: Play the ball forward, create a bit of spine tilt away from the target, make sure to complete your shoulder turn during your backswing, and finish balanced.

This drive is the toughest on the course, in my opinion. Not only do the players have to hit it long, but accuracy is at a premium, as there is water both left and right. This green

Íš Č… ʹͳ͡ǧ Íľ This long par 3 will require a mid to long iron. The green is well guarded left and right with three deep bunkers. Any miscue off the tee will create a challenging up-and-down opportunity for par. A par here is good, and a birdie is a bonus. How to get it close from a greenside bunker: Open the face of your sand wedge slightly, play the ball two inches forward of center, make a long lazy swing and strike the sand two inches behind the ball.

ͳ͸ Č… ͳ͸ʹǧ Íľ “The Loudest Hole in Golfâ€? This hole is hardly recognizable during the summer months after the stands have been dismantled, but during the tournament, this is one of the most amazing places in all of sports. The players will be faced with a short iron to a smallish green. No problem, right? Well, with 25,000 people watching their every move, even the pros demonstrate they are human at times. A rock-solid preshot routine is in order to establish a positive mindset, because a bad shot here will certainly end in many boos from the gallery. To develop your own preshot routine: Start behind your ball, pick out an intermediate target 3 feet in front of your ball, grip the club, walk into your shot, look at the target, then look at your intermediate Â–ÂƒÂ”Â‰Â‡Â–ÇĄ „”‡ƒ–Š‡ ‹Â? ƒÂ?† ‘—–ǥ ƒÂ?† Š‹–Ǥ Hole 11

will be very challenging to hit in regulation if a ball sails into the rough. The players will be happy to take a par here and move to the next hole.

ͳ͡ Č… ͡͡ʹǧ ͡ This second par 5 in three holes presents an excellent chance for birdie. Most of the players will be hitting a long iron or hybrid into the green for their second shot. This fairway has been redesigned during the offseason to create a series of moguls in the landing area off the tee. If a player does decide to reach this hole in two shots, he will have to negotiate an island green that’s surrounded by water. How to hit a hybrid: Play the ball slightly forward of center, make a full shoulder turn during your back swing, try to take a •Â?ƒŽŽ †‹˜‘– ƒ– –Š‡ Â„ÂƒÂŽÂŽÇĄ ƒÂ?† ϔ‹Â?‹•Š „ƒŽƒÂ?…‡†Ǥ

ͳͺ Č… ͜;ͺǧ Íś The drive on 18 demands accuracy. With water to the left and bunkers to the right, the players will only have around 60 yards to land the ball. A good drive will set up a short iron to an elevated green. REPRESENTING THE PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE

NAVIGATING MARRIAGE DISSOLUTION AND PATERNITY MATTERS BY ADAM B. SWICKLE, ESQ.

W

hile I was growing up in South Florida, my father took my brothers and me to countless football games. I remember peering through the chain-link fence at the Dolphins’ practice facility just to catch a glimpse of my favorite team members. I had no idea then that one day I’d be an attorney on marriage dissolution and paternity matters for players like them. During the past 16 years, I have come to realize that professional athletes not only possess unique talents and skills, but also unique issues when facing a divorce or paternity lawsuit. While the average American worker receives a regular annual income, professional athletes, especially those in the NFL, are generally paid season to season. And while most individuals pay income taxes only in the states where they live, professional athletes pay taxes in states where they play away games. Many attorneys and judges lack an understanding of players’ Â•ÂƒÂŽÂƒÂ”Â‹Â‡Â•ÇĄ „‘Â?—•‡•ǥ ”‡–‹”‡Â?‡Â?– „‡Â?‡Ď?‹–• ƒÂ?† –Š‡ Ž‹Â?‡Ǥ Š‡ ”‡•—Ž–ǣ Players sometimes pay more than what is equitable in child support ‘” „‡ƒ” ƒ Žƒ”‰‡” „—”†‡Â? ‹Â? ’ƒ”‡Â?–‹Â?‰ –‹Â?‡•Šƒ”‡ •…Š‡†—Ž‡•Ǥ Š‡ following advice may assist an attorney in navigating a divorce or paternity action involving a professional athlete. First, the Internet is your friend. Study articles on the client’s contract, roster assignment, schedule and injury reports before ’”‡’ƒ”‹Â?‰ ƒ Š‹Ž† —’’‘”– —‹†‡Ž‹Â?‡• ‘”Â?•Š‡‡–Ǥ Š‹• ‹Â?ˆ‘”Â?ƒ–‹‘Â? will also assist in establishing a visitation schedule that is in the best interest of the athlete’s child or children. Second, review the player’s contract with the team and agent for the salary and payment schedules. Most contracts, especially those of NFL players, differentiate among signing bonuses, base •ƒŽƒ”› ƒÂ?† ’‡”ˆ‘”Â?ƒÂ?…‡ „‘Â?—•‡•Ǥ Š‹• ‹Â?ˆ‘”Â?ƒ–‹‘Â? ‹• …”‹–‹…ƒŽ ‹Â? †‡–‡”Â?‹Â?‹Â?‰ ™Š‡–Š‡” •’‡…‹Ď?‹… ˆ—Â?†• …ƒÂ? „‡ —•‡† ‹Â? …ƒŽ…—Žƒ–‹Â?‰ …Š‹Ž†

support. Furthermore, the salary structure of the sport determines whether funds under the player’s contract are guaranteed, reoccurring or both. While most Major League Baseball and NBA contracts are guaranteed, very little of an NFL contract is guaranteed other than a portion of the signing bonus. Even that may be in question; in some circumstances, a team can demand the return of a portion of a player’s signing bonus if certain conditions are not met. Lack of knowledge and understanding of the particulars can lead to an unreasonable and unnecessary amount of child support. Š‹”†ǥ ’Žƒ›‡”• …ƒÂ? „‡ –ƒš‡† „› ‘—–•‹†‡ •–ƒ–‡•Ǥ ‘” ‡šƒÂ?’Ž‡ǥ ƒ ’Žƒ›‡” ˆ‘” –Š‡ ‹ƒÂ?‹ ‘Ž’Š‹Â?• ‘” ƒÂ?’ƒ ƒ› —……ƒÂ?‡‡”• Â?ƒ› be taxed on away games in states that have income taxes. Last, read the collective bargaining agreement for the client’s particular sport in order to understand the player’s retirement structure and true income. For example, the NFL automatically deducts mandatory retirement payments from a player’s game checks. Many athletes are unaware that the deductions are mandatory and deductible —Â?†‡” …‡”–ƒ‹Â? •…‡Â?ƒ”‹‘•Ǥ Š‡ ƒ–ŠŽ‡–‡ Â?ƒ› ƒŽ•‘ ’ƒ› —Â?‹‘Â? †—‡•ǥ ™Š‹…Š ƒ”‡ likewise deductible if deemed mandatory. One of the best ways to see the difference in quality and complexity would be to compare a generic Willamette Valley wine and the site-specific sub-region wine. WILLAMETTE Many of you may be familiar with Stephen Spurrier’s 1976 Paris Ǥ California on the wine map, so to speak. What many don’t know is that Oregon earned its original druthers in much the same way just three short years later. David Lett of Eyrie Vineyards entered his 1975 pinot noir in the 1979 Wine Olympics held in Paris. WASHINGTON Although still in its youth, relatively speaking, Washington is growing in quality by leaps and bounds. Chardonnay has become the leading white wine varietal alongside the red: cabernet sauvignon. One of the main things that has made Washington’s wines unique is its climate. Many people are aware that famous regions like Napa Valley and Sonoma have distinct sub-regions (Napa: Oakville, Mount Veeder, Stags’ Leap District, etc; Sonoma: Russian River Valley, Sonoma Â‘ÂƒÂ•Â–ÇĄ Ž‡šƒÂ?†‡” ÂƒÂŽÂŽÂ‡Â›ÇĄ Â‡Â–Â…ČŒǤ ƒ…Š Šƒ• ƒ •’‡…‹Ď?‹… ™‹Â?‡nj‰”‘™‹Â?‰ style and personality. In 2005, Willamette Valley began the process of identifying distinct sites that were noted for producing high“—ƒŽ‹–› ™‹Â?‡• ‘ˆ †‹•–‹Â?…–‹˜‡ •–›Ž‡•Ǥ • ‘ˆ –‘†ƒ› –Š‡”‡ ƒ”‡ •‹š •’‡…‹Ď?‹… sub-regions: Ribbon Ridge, McMinnnville, Dundee Hills, Chehalem Mountain, Yamhill-Carlton District and Eola-Amity Hills. These six sites have demonstrated their ability to produce wines of great complexity and character.

Willamette Valley is a relative baby when compared to the longstanding traditions of Burgundy, but this exciting newcomer region has managed to compete with (and often conquer) the great wines of its older cousin in a very short period of time. These wines are destined to become some of the best in the world.

Merlot has received a bad rap since the movie Sideways. It seemingly got pushed to the side after Miles’ famous rant: “I’m not drinking any f****** merlot! There were many lackluster merlots around, but those were typically afterthoughts of producers who were only interested in making cabernet sauvignon. They would end up with a few barrels of merlot made only to blend into their cabernets, and tossed them into a bottle, slapped a label on them without a thought to their individual quality. It’s akin to dining at a great restaurant and being served yesterday’s leftovers. Not exactly a recipe for great merlot, is it? Washington has many merlots, however, from producers whose goal it is to make great merlot. The wines are velvety soft. They explode with chocolatecovered plums, sweet baking spices and juicy, ripe tannins. It’s a shame Miles hadn’t discovered their beauty. Luckily, you won’t make the same mistake.

Cabernet, like pinot noir, requires a long growing season to come to full ripeness. Can you think of a better area than one with little rainfall? Late rains have spoiled more cabernet vintages than anything else. Eastern Washington doesn’t have that issue, though. The Cascade Mountains keep it all in Seattle. The long season

These two classic Bordeaux grapes have taken a very strong foothold in Washington, cementing the state’s reputation as the Bordeaux of the USA. Just like with the chardonnays, these wines are very different than the ones grown in California and France. They straddle the fence between New and Old World, exhibiting the best qualities of each. The heat of the High Steppe Desert during the day, and the severe temperature drop at night make Washington an ideal climate for cultivating these (and many other) grapes. The wines show great power and depth, along with the elegance to match. Many sommeliers agree that the merlots here can rival some of the best ones made in Bordeaux’s Pomerol region. And the cabernet sauvignons we’ll put up against any made in the world.

2012 NAPLES WINTER WINE FESTIVAL

T

GIVING BACK TO THOSE IN NEED

hroughout the year, hundreds of charity events vie for people’s attention and attendance, and while some are worthwhile, others fall short. Sometimes, though, a charity event comes along that genuinely changes lives and presents guests with unforgettable experiences. One such event is the Naples Winter Wine Festival — a top 10 event for wealthy Americans, according to Luxury Institute, and also ranked by Wine Spectator as the most successful charity wine auction in the nation. The festival has raised $94.5 million since 2001 and has positively impacted the lives of 125,000 underprivileged and at-risk children. The idea for the Naples festival began simply enough. A conversation sparked among several Naples couples who love Ď?‹Â?‡ …—‹•‹Â?‡ ƒÂ?† ”ƒ”‡ ™‹Â?‡•Ǥ Š‡› ™ƒÂ?–‡† –‘ Â?ƒÂ?‡ ƒ ’”‘ˆ‘—Â?† ƒÂ?† lasting difference for children in need in Southwest Florida, where pockets of poverty coexist with posh resorts and pristine beaches. The rest, as they say, is history.

The trustees formed the Naples Children & Education Foundation, and each year invite celebrity chefs and worldrenowned vintners to come to Naples to participate in an intimate gathering spanning three days. They also collect exquisite lots for the live auction, which is held on the grand lawn of The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Naples. The sweet rewards include impossible-toduplicate treasures and experiences, from rare wine collections, –‘ ’”‹˜ƒ–‡ ›ƒ…Š–‹Â?‰ ‡š…—”•‹‘Â?•ǥ –‘ …‡Ž‡„”‹–›njĎ?‹ŽŽ‡† –”‹’•ǥ –‘ ‡Â?Â˜Â›ÇŚ inducing vehicles (including a custom Rolls Royce that captured a winning bid of $2 million at the 2007 auction). “It’s all about the kids,â€? says Bob Clifford, co-chair of the 2012 festival with his wife Joan. “One of the keys to the festival’s success is ‡‡– –Š‡ ‹†• ÂƒÂ›ÇĄ ™Š‡Â? ‰—‡•–• ‹Â?–‡”ƒ…– ™‹–Š …Š‹Ž†”‡Â? ™Š‘ „‡Â?‡Ď?‹– ˆ”‘Â? their auction bids.â€? Joan adds, “It’s an emotional, eye-opening experience that tends to open hearts and wallets.â€? Another key to success is the personal nature of the festival, with only 580 philanthropy-minded guests mingling with fellow millionaires, star chefs, famous vintners and typically a few Hollywood and sports celebrities.

BELIEVE IN THE MAGIC The 2012 festival takes place January 27-29, and the theme is “Believe in the Magic.” Among the 17 celebrity chefs preparing intimate ϐ at trustees’ private homes are Wolfgang Puck, Michelle Bernstein and Tony Mantuano — the festival’s chef de cuisine. Mantuano says, “While it is an honor to share my love of food at such a widely respected festival, at the heart of this are the children. The Naples Winter Wine Festival is a highly effective charity, which has a record of achieving life-changing results. I truly am honored to be involved.” Also participating in the festival and ϐ the vintner dinners are 28 world-renowned winemakers, including Gaia Gaja of GAJA; and the 2012 festival’s honored vintner, HRH Prince Robert of Luxembourg, president and CEO of Clarence Dillon, which owns Château Haut-Brion and Château La Mission HautBrion. The prince will also participate in a pre-festival special event in which 70 guests will enjoy a comparative vertical tasting of HautBrion wines. When the auction commences Saturday, January 28, patrons will bid on lots such as a 35-bottle vertical of Château Haut-Brion spanning 84 years; a complete set of every Vérité wine ever made between 1998 and 2008; a behind-the-scenes experience at the Kentucky Derby; a trip Ǣ ϐ Darren Clarke, the 2011 British Open Champion.

children in need. NCEF trustees focus their charitable support on yearly grants to as many as 28 charities and also pursue long-term strategic initiatives: children’s early learning, medical-oral health, out-of-school programs, behavioral health and childhood hunger. The charitable results? Nothing short of amazing. One example: Through a collaborative public-private partnership, NCEF Pediatric Dental Center was built in 2008 to address the pediatric oral health crisis in Collier County, with more than 29,000 patient visits so far. The impetus for the center came from a 2005 needs assessment commissioned by NCEF that revealed an estimated 17,000 children in Collier County lacked adequate dental care, a proven formula for severe tooth decay, pain and disruption in a child’s ability to learn.

His Royal Highness Prince Robert of Luxembourg of Château Haut-Brion

Fabulous yachting excursions are also on the lot roster, including a one-week cruise aboard the 201-foot Feadship Motor Yacht Majestic for six couples in the Northern Europe-Baltic Sea area and seven nights aboard the 112-foot sailboat Gitana for three couples, with an itinerary choice of the Panama Coast, Central America or parts of the U.S. East Coast.

CHARITY AT WORK Undoubtedly, the most important aspect of the festival is that 100 percent of funds raised under the auction tent goes directly to

NCEF has also taken a bite out of hunger through its Lunch Boxes of Love initiative that began in February 2011, with weekly distributions totaling nearly 500,000 pounds of food to school children and their families. The children receiving the food distributions are among 63,405 Collier County children who qualify for free or reduced lunches. Those are just two examples of charity at work. More information about NCEF and Naples Winter Wine Festival can be found at Napleswinefestival.com. For those attending the festival, it will be a magical three days that mixes fun with changing children’s lives for the better. It doesn’t get better than that.

DESTINATION LOCATION SCHEDULE YOUR NEXT LANDING AT SCOTTSDALE AIR CENTER BY KEVIN WHIPPS

T

he city of Scottsdale is known for its beauty and great weather eight months out of the ǡ ϐ ǡ there really is only one spot that takes you right to the heart of it: Scottsdale Air Center. This FBO has been in operation since 2002, and in that time has made quite a dent on the industry, becoming one of the foremost destinations for private jet travel. But what makes this airport so special is really what sets it apart. First, Scottsdale Air Center is a private facility, meaning that it doesn’t have to maintain the same types of regulations that a traditional commercial airport has to adhere to. One example comes from Tommy Walker, the general manager. “For instance, the lobby is big. We wanted to make the minimum distance between your car and your airplane, from the front door to

what we call the back door,” Walker says. A customer can drive up to a covered parking area, walk out and go straight through the lobby to hit the runway in record time. It makes travel fast and convenient — two things not really found in the commercial industry today. It’s the same way for landings, Walker explains. “[The client] gets out of his airplane and gets into his car, limo, or whatever and goes off.” The lobby has additional custom touches that give it an upscale feel. “For example, we have an art gallery here,” Walker says. “People can buy any of this art right off my wall if you wanted it.” Plus, one of the more popular events in the North Scottsdale area is the Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction, held every January, and it’s just a short drive away. “We usually have a car in the lobby because we support the Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction. So we really participate in all of the city and area functions as far as to make the airport as part of the whole community.”

The auctions aren’t the only big event to draw people to the center, either, and that’s partially due to the excellent location. “Between spring training and the Arabian Horse Show and the [Waste Management Open] golf tournament and Barrett-Jackson, we have all of these events that happen and so it brings all the people down here in the wintertime, when it’s 70 or 80 degrees here and it’s minus 10 in Minneapolis,” explains Walker. Scottsdale Air Center is also able to handle even the largest private jet, such as the Bombardier Global express, because of its long runway and increased max takeoff weight. “It’s in excess of 883 feet long so people can take off and go wherever they want to,” says Walker. That means, should a person want to depart for a foreign country and need all of the extra space and fuel that a large private jet provides, he or she is covered — and as an added bonus, Scottsdale Air Center has a customs center as well to help process people coming in from foreign lands. Another bonus of the Scottsdale Air Center is its connection to the Scottsdale Airport, from which they lease their runway. This gives them a direct connection and allows customers to quickly get in and out of the airport without major hassles. That kind of convenience can be hard to come by, but Scottsdale Air Center has it all covered. As Walker says, “Just start your engines and go.” So who takes advantage of these services? “We get mostly businessmen,” Walker says. “Obviously, there are some wealthy individuals that have corporate airplanes that they are being able to maintain, but I would just tell you my estimate that the ϐ ͻͲ business purposes and they come down here for business.” And in those situations, there are some added advantages at Scottsdale Air Center that most FBOs don’t have, such as the conference room. 44

BARRON COLLIER BUILDING ON A STRONG FOUNDATION BY KEVIN WHIPPS

C

hances are pretty good that you’ve heard of the name Barron Collier before. But what you probably don’t know about the real estate giant is that it’s more than an overnight success; its roots reach all the way back to just after the Civil War, and it’s still owned by the original family. The Barron Collier story is fascinating to be sure, and it all starts with a baby born in 1873. The Barron Collier Story That child was Barron Gift Collier, the son of confederate soldier Cowles Myles Collier. As Barron grew up in Hampton, Va., he knew that a career in the military such as his father’s wasn’t for him, and instead decided that he wanted to go into business. What business would come later to him, but he started early. At just 16, he was already working a full-time job soliciting freight cargos for the Illinois Central Railroad. ǯ ϐ made street lights powered by gasoline. Barron ended up selling the system to the City of Memphis, which generated enough capital for him to invest in a printing plant. That company sold advertising banners to streetcars and trains, and wasn’t making any money doing so. Barron saw the potential in the project, and ended up ϐ ǡ

It wasn’t easy going by any means, but in the end, Barron was partially responsible for making Florida the great state that it is today. generating more capital for him in the process. He turned that business into a huge success, eventually taking the company up ϐ Ȅ ǯ exactly what he did. As he started making his millions, his path eventually led him ϐ Ǥ This was at the turn of the century, and Florida wasn’t the tropical Ȅ ǯ ǯ built it yet. He continued to buy up property, even doing so through the recession of 1920 (and against the advice of his peer and friend, J.P. Morgan), eventually owning over a million acres of property in the then undeveloped wilderness. He worked with the state to get roads to these areas, and organized most of the infrastructure as well to get the ball rolling. It wasn’t easy going by any means, but

in the end, Barron was partially responsible for making Florida the great state that it is today. A Family Tradition After World War II, it was time for Barron to turn over the reins of his company to his sons. The company grew hand in hand with Florida, as advances in technology (mainly air conditioning and mosquito control) made the area more tolerable to live in. When his eldest son, Barron Jr., passed in 1976, control of the company went to his heirs. Barron Collier Companies as we know it today is made up of the fourth generation of family members and is run by co-presidents, Katie Sproul and Blake Gable.

Blake Gable is currently the president of the real estate division, as well as gas and oil operations. “It’s been about twelve years that I’ve been [at Barron Collier Companies], and I had the opportunity to work on a variety of different things including the construction of a new town in Florida from the ground up and a prominent business center in Phoenix known as the Collier Center.” But growing up Collier as it were, it’s not just a given that you’ll end up in the family business, and they still raise their children to be Ǥ Dz ϐ that we owned, and my second job was working at a gas station that we owned, and both were making minimum wage,” Gable recalls. “My parents always did a good job of making sure that we had the right values in place.” Even though the family and the company are substantially larger than they were in the early 1900s, there’s still an entrepreneurial spirit that rides through the business. “The family has really been great about giving us wide latitude to bring back to the board projects that are interesting, fun and maybe a little unique and different,” Gable says. More Than Just Property Barron Collier Companies doesn’t just own a ton of land, they also ǡ ϐ ǡ golf clubs, hotels, shopping centers and even entire communities. One such example is the creation of Ave Maria, a 4,000 acre town built in southwest Florida. “[Tom Monaghan, founder of Domino’s

“Our family is proud of its heritage, and giving back to the environment and the community is part of that responsibility.” Pizza] was coming to Naples and he was going to build a new university here,” Gables explains. “At the time, our late CEO reached out to him through a friend of a friend and next thing you know, we’re ϐ simultaneously in America.” Katie Sproul is the president of the agriculture division which grows and distributes citrus, cattle, sod and vegetables to some of the top retailers in the country. In addition, she is the president of Halstatt Real Estate Fund, which oversees the luxury country club community Grey Oaks, in Naples, Florida, as well as the jointly owned La Playa Beach and Golf Resort and Naples’ largest mixeduse development, Mercato. “While our family has focused on developing our own land and assets for the past 100 years, we also see the opportunities that lie within joint ventures. & Golf Resort is a perfect example and one we are very proud of,” comments Katie. As she should— the resort receives accolades from various top travel industry publications, beating out several Naples competitors. Giving Back to the Environment Barron Collier’s roots in the property management business go back pretty far, and so do their environmental concerns. “The reason why Barron Collier Sr. bought all the land out here in the ϐ ǡdz Ǥ “That’s something that we all continue to act in; the same corporately responsible manner as he did from the beginning.” Since then, the company has helped to enact other legislation to keep the wildlife and surrounding area safe. Take the Florida Panther Protection Program, for example. In 2008, Barron Collier worked together with various other organizations to ensure that the Florida Panther (an endangered species) was protected from further harm. To do this, they made a fund to create a contiguous range of panther habitat that won’t be touched by man, that way they have a safe place to live. This is all happening in Eastern Collier County by the way, an area named for, well, we’re sure you can ϐ Ǥ Another example is the Rural Land Stewardship, a program led by Barron Collier. The concept is pretty complex, but long story short, it deals with federal land conservation, and keeping it safe. 48

I

JetsetMag.com

There is an oil component to the Barron Collier system, but it’s kept just as eco-friendly as the rest of them. “Our oil drilling is really something that we are very proud of, the way that we and our partners have operated, and we certainly expect to continue that as we move forward with additional drilling.” “Our family is proud of its heritage, and giving back to the environment and the community is part of that responsibility,” adds Katie. Barron Collier Companies is actively involved in several philanthropies, both local and national, with various family members involved at every level. What the Future Holds There’s still a lot of land out there that Barron Collier can work with, and many other partners as well. For now, they’re going to continue to break the mold by building high-end projects, creating new communities and changing the way our skylines look, one structure at a time. And unlike some large companies, there’s still an entrepreneurial spirit that runs through everything they do, which includes partnering with other companies when the opportunity presents itself. It’s really an open-minded atmosphere that’s rare to ϐ ǡ ϐ Ǥ One thing that we’re certain about, however, is that this company will stay in the family for a long time to come. Gable said it best: “I work for my family, and my kids and their kids. It’s a big responsibility, but certainly one that I enjoy.” January . February 2012

REAL ESTATE PREDICTIONS FOR 2012 BY KEN MCELROY

haken by stock market declines and anemic bond yields, investors will continue to gravitate toward equity real estate in 2012, but will grow somewhat unsettled in the face of limited property investment opportunities. To further the confusion, no markets or property sectors offer sure-shot opportunities for big gains in 2012. Canadian real estate markets will continue to remain the most stable in North America, as they never really experienced a bubble. It should be no surprise that the U.S. markets that experience population and job growth will be the strongest economies in the near future, and investors should focus on markets generating jobs — typically where healthcare, technology and energy companies concentrate. In many markets, continued economic doldrums and the absence of dynamic jobs generators to stimulate overall demand will have an ongoing negative impact on most every real estate class. Jobs will be the key to recovery. The lackluster employment outlook in many areas will create ϐ ϐ ǡ spending compromises growth in retail and industrial occupancies and rents. As mortgages mature in many of these properties, we will see continued defaults as the lenders will underwrite to current occupancies and rental rates, creating lower valuations and putting stress on investors. On a positive note, pockets of hiring will occur in certain industries, ϐ Ǥ attention to these emerging trends when investing. Texas cities and some out-of-the-way places like North Dakota. Technology will continue to boost areas of California, the Seattle area, Boston and smaller high-tech markets like Austin and Raleigh-Durham. Healthcare will be in the headlines for the next few decades. It should be no surprise that, now that baby boomers in the U.S. are turning 65 years old at a rate of 10,000 per day, healthcare will expand everywhere. The steadily graying population means more medical attention, medical services and facilities to accommodate. Senior housing of all types will lead the charge, and this time the demand will be there. Jobs will continue to grow for lower-paid aides or highly skilled doctors, nurses and technicians. Progressive cities like San Antonio, Texas, will be impacted positively due to this future job growth potential.

SMOOTH SAILING THE WHITSUNDAY ISLANDS THE YACHTING WORLD’S PLAYGROUND SOUTH OF THE EQUATOR BY MARIE LOOK

ou’ve done Cannes and Monte Carlo, and have some wild memories from Dubai and Phuket. There’s South Beach, of course — but Miami was fun ϔ ͷͶ . How about a different kind of world-class yachting destination this year? Less well-known than the French or Italian rivieras, but with just as much to offer, are Australia’s Whitsunday islands, a collection of more than 70 breathtakingly beautiful oases (most uninhabited) located off the central coast of Queensland, and one of the most popular yachting destinations anywhere in the Southern Hemisphere. With the Great Barrier Reef, the metropolis of Brisbane and some fantastically luxurious resorts all within reach, the area is a nautical playground for members of the world’s elite who are in the know. Although visitors to the Whitsundays will imagine they’ve embarked on a to-the-ends-of-the-earth kind of vacation (in a good way), reaching the islands is, thankfully, relatively uncomplicated. Close to 200 vessels have participated in recent years, drawing scores of participants and spectators alike. But as with events such as the Kentucky Derby and the F1 grand prix, the events of Hamilton Island Race Week are simultaneously all about the races, and yet not all about the races. For the social set, there’s more going on off the water than on, including golf tournaments, swanky seafood dinners, fashion shows, cocktail parties and more, so do some careful packing.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO COOK YOUR FOOD TO EAT HEALTHY BY KEVIN WHIPPS INTERVIEW BY RAY FLORIO

W

e all started off as a species hunting in the wild and working out every day, but today that’s not really the case. Most of us spend our days sitting at a computer of some sort, getting fat purely by not counting the calories that go in versus the ones that go out. It takes hard work and dedication to truly develop yourself into a healthy specimen, and there are multiple ways to get there. One method is a bit controversial, but it goes back to that caveman that we began as millions of years ago. It’s about getting back to nature and eating food as nature intended — raw. No cooking, no fancy ovens or cookware, just pure, unadulterated food. In Santa Monica, Calif., one supporter of the raw food lifestyle is Melissa Henig, owner of Melissa’s Famous Raw Cuisine and Rawfoodstylist.com. Her mission is to properly educate the world about organic foods, local farms, plus she sells food as well. “I have a delivery service in Santa Monica, Calif. — the LA area — and I supply people with raw food, packaged and ready to go and also a cleansing service,” Henig says. “I deliver it fresh every morning as fresh pressed raw juices and smoothies.” Henig’s background dictated where she’d end up, as her parents were against feeding her the processed foods and sugars that most other kids her age were eating. Back then she would drink carrot juice as a snack and deliver it to the neighborhood kids as well, leading her down the path to a health-conscious lifestyle. “I felt good about it and I just stuck with it,” she says. For the rest of us, however, making the transition to raw foods is not an easy one. The average American has eaten tons of processed foods over the course of his or her lifetime, sometimes without even knowing it. And the lifestyle change can be even rougher for those who have sensitive stomachs. To help make the transition easier, Henig suggests you start with a cleanse. “It’s pressing a restart button on your diet and your health. You restart with the cleanse and I live it, day in and day out.” ϐ eat. The common misconception is that all you can have are salads and juices, but really, there are many more options that appeal to a wide variety of palates. Henig explains: “People think they are going to be deprived, but you can eat as much as you want all day long with fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, coconuts and avocados.

IN BLOOM DANY BAHAR IS HELPING LOTUS BLOSSOM BY KEVIN WHIPPS INTERVIEW BY EMMANUEL LUPE

any Bahar has been tasked with some pretty big jobs in his career. Recently, he was the head of the corporate projects business team for the popular energy drink company Red Bull, and then he moved on to Ferrari, where he was the senior vice president for brand management. Who is Lotus’ No. 1 competitor today and what is your goal — do you want Lotus to be compared to Porsche, for example? ǡ ϐ Ǥ ǯ Ǥ ǡ Ǥ Ȅ ǡ ǡ ǡ ǡ ǡ Ǥ ϐ program, and you are going to launch six new cars, plus relaunch some of the cars you’ve designed. Can you elaborate on the plan? 76

obviously if you are able to turn around this company successfully, I guess every shareholder will want to have his money back, and one day you can get your money back either by going public or by selling the company to somebody else. So, I guess one day this might happen, yes. Where do you build your cars right now, and do you plan to build your cars in the U.S. in the future? No, we build all of our cars at our headquarters here in the UK. It’s all made in England. It’s all handmade, and we will keep it as it is. We will always introduce machinery and semiautomatic if you want help, but at the end, these cars are mainly assembled by hand. Can you tell us about the different Lotus branches? Our branches are divided into two divisions. One is the cars

business and one is the engineering business, where we supply and provide services to other big car manufacturers — these are the main two areas. Then we have two other areas. One is the motorsports division that actually works on Formula 1, Indy car and all other series. And then we have the merchandising and Ǥ ϐ company. We have subsidiaries in the U.S., in Germany, in China, in Malaysia and that’s it. How is Lotus currently doing with the slow economy? Well, you know … luxury goods, or how can I call it ... “niche products” I don’t want to say are immune against crisis, but somehow protected because you address a little amount of people ϐ Ǥ This is not just for the sports car business, but it’s probably in January . general for the luxury goods business. Some markets are affected and some are not. Thank God we are not affected by this. We’ve grown. We’ve grown about 8 percent from the previous year, and we will grow another 10 or 15 percent this year, so thank God we are not affected. We might be selling less cars maybe in terms of numbers, but we are selling more expensive cars and therefore our revenues and bottom line numbers are looking better than the previous years. What is Lotus’ approach to the American market? Oh, it’s the biggest market. It’s one-third of the worldwide sales. It’s the biggest market for all of the sports car manufacturers. It’s been challenged by China at the moment, but one day the American market will recover and will become the strongest and toughest market. And we have to be there, and we’re there and it requires a priority from all the car manufacturers and not just us. How do you market your cars in the USA? Through motorsports. Ǥ Ǥ ϐ ǫ ϐ ǡ ǡ 1,000 to 1,500 cars. Which cars are to be introduced in the U.S. within the next few years? Same cars as in Europe. All of our cars that we present are global cars, as you call them, and will be introduced market by market, including the U.S. Since the Paris Auto Show September 2010 launch, Lotus has been using a lot of international celebrities to launch the rebirth of the brand. What is with Lotus and the celebrities? Well, you just have to go back a few years and look at where Lotus was in the ’70s and ’80s, where Lotus was featuring in James Bond movies and movies like Basic Instinct, movies like Pretty Woman and

78

I

many other movies as well. So, there was always this perception that it is something that is different and more special than an ordinary sports car. And we have seen this with our launches in Los Angeles — for example, in 2010, and then you can imagine such a small company like we are. We don’t have the marketing budgets of the big, big, big companies, so these guys are coming to us because they feel associated, they feel as friends to us. Not just because we are paying them, because we could not afford it anyways. Who is the celebrity you think contributed the most to the Lotus launch? Oh I cannot say that. You just have to see our Los Angeles event and you can name them from Sharon Stone to Demi Moore to the Baldwin brothers ...

Lotus was always about Formula 1. The company was actually founded to go racing and therefore our link with Formula. But in general, with motorsports [Lotus] will always remain. And it will always be the activity to actually support our sales and it is the main marketing activity for us in the future. So we will be there for a long time hopefully.

Lotus is going to be racing all over the world in the next several years and is now involved in so many projects, including Indy Where does your love for racing automobiles come from? CAR and the Indy 500 in the USA. Can you tell us about all the That’s a really good question. Actually, I really don’t know. I think racing programs and why is it so important for Lotus to be I started to be passionate about cars in general and in particular present in so many racing series? Lotus today is the only car company — still today, it’s a small company — but it is the only company that won all the major world championships that actually “TODAY WE ARE A VERY SPECIAL COMPANY AND WE exist. Formula 1, Indy 500, World Rally, GT Racing, DON’T HAVE MANY COMPETITORS BECAUSE WE ARE Le Mans car. There is no other car company that won A VERY NICHE PRODUCT AND WE OFFER PRODUCTS that. So you can see that motor racing was always actually the core ingredient of the success of Lotus ACTUALLY FOR PEOPLE WHO LIKE TO RACE TRACKS in the past, and therefore, we decided because it AND ALL OF THESE THINGS.â€? was good 30 to 40 years ago, why should we change this? And I believe all that we are doing with the new product is that we are trying to get the brand back to sports cars ‌ I would say when I was about to turn 30. Less than where it belongs, and this also includes motorsports activities, ;ͲǍ †‹†Â?ǯ– Šƒ˜‡ ƒ •’‡…‹Ď?‹… Ž‹ƒ‹•‘Â? ™‹–Š …ƒ”• ‘” ™‹–Š –Š‡ –‡ƒÂ? …ƒ”•Ǥ and therefore we’ve started a motorsport in many different areas from Formula 1 to Indy CAR to GT to Rally to Le Mans, and Lotus and Formula 1 are closely linked. In 2011 the name one day, we would like to be as successful as the founder of this Lotus made a comeback at the highest level with Renault company was 30 years ago, 40 years ago. Formula 1. What is the future of Lotus in Formula 1?

POP PRINCESS Katy Perry Brings Music to the Mainstream By Tom Zenner

A

s she strolled to center stage, in a typical day in the life of a world-famous superstar, pop music and pop culture icon Katy Perry gave Jetset a little sample of what it is about her that makes her so successful, so famous, so likable and so fresh: her abnormal ability to appear normal. Oh, there’s nothing normal about her talent, her straight-from-the-heavens ability to charm a microphone and an audience, combined with her mind-blowing ability to create fun, listenable, radio-friendly, groove-inducing music. And the gift she possesses to make cash registers sing and iTunes downloads ping is something the music industry hasn’t seen before. Simply put, Katy Perry sells songs and moves product. As she explained some of the methods of her magic to Jetset on the syndicated entertainment show Extra as she launched her brand-new perfume Meow (appropriate for someone whose cat has its own blog), it was easy for a person to understand how Perry has basically gone from being an unknown up-and-comer with three recording deal failures to a globetrotting chart-topper who travels the world with her entourage in Gulfstreams. And what’s really amazing is, she’s done it in the time between opening ceremonies of the Olympics. Which brings up another aspect of the Katy Perry phenomena that helps explain where all the success has come from and where it appears to be going: She’s still grounded enough to know how magical things have been for her lately — while also smart and savvy enough to know she’s going to have to keep working as hard as she has to keep the machine humming.

While changing the color of her hair might elicit more buzz on the Internet and headlines in tabloids, what Perry has accomplished in regards to record sales is, well, to put it bluntly, off the charts. Her second studio album, Teenage Dream, has ϐ Ǥ ͳ Ǥ time, when Michael Jackson cranked out the same number on his iconic album Bad. For Perry, that record is still within grasp. “Listen, I don’t know if it’s going to happen,” she told JetsetǤ Dz ǯ Ǥ ǯ don’t need to top anything. I’m good. If it works, it would be ǡ ǯ ǯ ϐ ǡ

Speaking of, there’s a reason why the 2002 Olympic Winter Games were held in Park City — the amazing mountains which surround the area. Three amazing ski resorts are in the nearby area, including Park City Mountain Resort, Deer Valley Resort and The Canyons Resort. Those who are planning a trip to Park City during the year should consider angling for the winter months, and make sure to bring along skis, snowboards, sleds and anything else designed to be taken down the slopes at high speeds. t’s funny, but as someone who has spent most of his adult life (and a good portion of his teenage years as well) in Scottsdale, you would think that I’d be able to write quite the lengthy tome about the city where I live. But it wasn’t always this way. When I moved to Scottsdale in 1987, Pinnacle Peak Road was considered to be “out there,” and State Route 101, which now connects all the cities in the Valley of the Sun, was still just a distant hope. The growth I’ve seen in the city in the past 20-some years has been amazing. Originally, city laws wouldn’t allow for building homes above a certain point on the mountains, as they would blight the views the peaks afforded residents. But city leaders eventually caved to the constant requests from developers and citizens, and began to allow construction on the mountains, albeit with restrictions. ǯ ϐ meet in town. There isn’t really a “poor” part of Scottsdale, as many of the lower-income housing areas have long since been torn down and the residents have moved to other parts of the valley. fact, pool parties are something of a constant theme in Scottsdale, what with the weather being suitable for beachwear pretty much all year round. Although this seems like a cliche, the conversations around the watercoolers often turn to the weather — and how insufferably hot it tends to get. But the truth be told, Scottsdale is actually quite nice to live in eight months out of the year. Sure, once it dips into the low 100s, things can get a little rough, but as they say, “it’s a dry heat,” right? Well, what they say is true, as the low humidity translates to heat without the sweat — unlike what you’d experience if you were in New York City and the temperatures were “only” in the 90s. So don’t let talk of the weather keep you from visiting. And it’s also one of the great advantages to living in 110

the area, as I’ve discovered over the years. For example, most years the temp is in the mid 60s come Christmastime, and stays in the 80s well into the spring. The dry climate also brings up another reason why people come to Scottsdale — the cars. The Barrett-Jackson auction is held in North Scottsdale every year, and brings thousands of people to the area who want to buy and sell their rides. Because of the low humidity, vehicles don’t age anywhere near as fast as they do further north, and they tend to keep their high values as a result. The weather is also why events like the Waste Management Open are held at TPC of Scottsdale, drawing golfers and golf fans to ǡ Ǧ ϐ dinners and other activities.

Of course, all of those people need a place to stay, and fortunately, there are lots of options available. Scottsdale has tons of spas, hotels and exotic resorts, and they’re in a wide variety of different places. Down by Old Town, there’s the aforementioned W Hotel, as well as the landmark Hotel Valley Ho and others; in the north, the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess and Westin Kierland Villas. ϐ ǡ ǯ what would soon become my long-term home. Years later, I would get married in a historical home in neighboring Paradise Valley, and I was told by the owner that Frank Lloyd Wright and the original owner of that home were friends, and were once the only two lights on that side of town. One could see ϐ ǡ ǯ built yet. Today, Taliesin West is just off of a street named — what else — Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard. As it turns out, talking about Scottsdale isn’t really that hard. I suppose that living here for 20-plus years has really given me a unique perspective on the city, one that the casual tourist just wouldn’t know. The next time you’re planning a trip, consider heading to one of the real gems of the desert, a place that’s a bit underrated, but well worth the time.

the wave. Wanting to continually raise the standards, Tom brought only the very best and rarest automobiles to the event, while Russ expertly collected and restored cars for show. Eventually, Russ also brought his sons Brian and Craig onto the team, along with his wife, Nellie, who ran the thriving company’s day-to-day operations. Change continued to be the theme for Barrett-Jackson through the 1990s — Russ passed away in 1993; Brian succumbed to cancer in 1995; and Tom, who retired in 1997, passed away in 2004. But Craig, who assumed the reins upon Tom’s retirement, aimed to keep their memories alive, by implementing an aggressive plan of growth to take Barrett-Jackson’s success to new heights.

With Craig at the helm, the auction introduced live Internet bidding and began airing live on SPEED in 1997. A $17 million sales total, 65 percent sales success ratio and more than 100,000 spectators marked the 1998 event, as did a cyber-simulcast, a bidder liaison service and the introduction of an international designer fashion show. Plus, more muscle cars, hot rods and restomods began crossing the block. The success of the Scottsdale event led collectors on the East Coast to clamor for their own auction, and in 2003, BarrettJackson crossed the country to Palm Beach, Fla., where it positively thrived. 201 1 SEMA SHOW THE BEST IN CUSTOMS ARE ALL HERE BY KEVIN WHIPPS

T

here are many famous car shows held around the world, but one holds a very unique distinction that makes it stand out above all the rest. First, it’s invitation-only; you have to be a member of the automotive industry or press to attend just by yourself. To get a car in there takes a whole other level of skill, and for your ride to appear on the property is considered one of the highest honors you can get. That’s the SEMA show. SEMA stands for Specialty Equipment Marketing Association, and they’re a group that makes sure that the government doesn’t impose on the automotive hobby. They’re the ones who lobby against things like destroying cars made before 1950 to save fuel, and who try to keep emissions laws accessible to those who own ϐ Ǥ

a few examples of the amazing things that SEMA has done over the years, and they have many more in the works. Every year, SEMA puts on a show at the Las Vegas Hilton Convention Center in fabulous Las Vegas. It’s a trade show, where anyone who has anything to do with the automotive industry attends (more than 60,000 domestic and international buyers in 2011), from the guys who make those beaded seat covers you see in taxis, to the auto manufacturers themselves. And every car in there Ǧ ϐ ǡ beyond belief. Problem is, you’ll probably never get to see the show, unless you’ve got friends on the inside. Fortunately, you do, and those friends are us. We attended the 2011 SEMA Show, and came home with a memory card packed with pictures. Follow us along on a whirlwind tour of the show, and see some of the best cars in the world, all in one place. ar manufacturers around the planet continue to introduce new cars with price tags that are constantly on the rise. Some of the top luxury automakers are also seeing a nice progression in their U.S. market sales — some of them even broke all sales records in 2011 since they started doing business on American soil. The ultra luxury car and the exotic sports car segments continue to progress as well. There are cars, and then there are exotic cars. Typically, these aren’t sedans we drive to work in, or the ones we drive the kids to school. These are automotive deities, beautiful jewels of speed and sex appeal that populate dreams and computer desktops. The world of exotics has never been bigger, better or more exciting. It is a challenge to select 10 of the most luxurious car makers among the world’s top most recognizable names, but we found a way.
