T

his issue of Jetset is all about journeys and exploration, both in a literal and figurative sense.

Let’s start with the trips you can actually take, as essentially every corner of the globe is covered in our exciting “Passport Pathways” section. We’re showcasing four distinct destinations that combine just the right amounts of opulence, magical history, breathtaking architecture, and five-star service and accommodations. The trek commences in Italy, where we focus on Veorona, Milan, and Tuscany — and all the great architecture, culture, history and cuisine that those regions are so known for. We then veer through the Czech Republic, focusing on Prague, the 1100 year old city that was once of capital of the Holy Roman Empire and still reigns as a cultural mecca. We also take you to China, highlighting the ever-increasing modernization of their upscale travel destinations and conclude with the tropical allure, gorgeous beaches, and incredible villas and luxury resorts of the Caribbean. It’s an exciting and comprehensive tour of world-class travel destinations that you can experience in true Jetset fashion. The spring and summer months are a time when jetsetters around the world consider new real estate options. We have a luxury real estate section in this issue that will allow you to do some ultra-luxury home shopping by simply flipping through the pages. We’ve assembled a prime collection of diverse, grand, and over-the-top real estate listings (alongside info on some of the most capable realtors in the game). If you’re not in the market for a new home right now, chances are you will be after perusing these pages. Our all-star editorial contributors are interested in taking our readers on self-improvement journeys. For instance, Daymond John continues his massively-popular Power of Broke theme, as he shares his five SHARK Points for unleashing the Power of Broke in yourself. Every reader of Jetset will benefit from Daymond’s piece, as he does a masterful job focusing on practical steps to elevate your own personal brand or business. Dr. John Demartini has crafted an incredibly meaningful message for finding a fulfilling career path, while Barry LaBov has insight on what big box retailers are doing to reach modern shoppers who are increasingly turning towards on-line shopping on their phone or computer. And Robert Kiyosaki and Dr. Radha Gopalan collaborate on an eye-opening piece where they examine the true definition of health, being healthy, and how wealth fits into that equation. For our cover story, we have an in-depth profile on one of the hottest up-and-coming actresses in Hollywood, Margot Robbie. Margot has two big-budget films coming out this summer, The Legend of Tarzan and Suicide Squad. In this article, we delve into what makes Robbie such an alluring actress and a bold, strong individual. After reading this story you’ll understand why most prominent producers in Hollywood are trying to cast the young Australian who once famously spontaneously slapped Jetset icon Leonardo DiCaprio across the face during an audition. Now that you have a peak at the quality content we’ve assembled in this issue of Jetset, feel free to set off on your own personal journey of enjoying it. Bon voyage!

CHANEL’S STUNNING NEW JEWELRY COLLECTION BY KAREN BROST

W

hen a certain famous French fashion house releases a new jewelry line, you know it’s going to be something extraordinary, and the Signature de Chanel collection certainly lives up to that expectation. Inspired by the traditional French needlework technique known as matelassé, the collection’s pieces are engraved with a quilted pattern reminiscent of the designs familiarly found on Chanel’s iconic 2.55 handbag. The Signature de Chanel collection includes necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings, and watches — 48 pieces in all — fashioned with white gold and diamonds (with some being further embellished with sapphires, rock crystals and pearls). The stunning “Signature Duo” necklace featured above is created in 18K white gold set with two brilliant-cut diamonds for a total weight of two carats, and an additional 1,139 brilliant-cut diamonds totaling 24.2 carats. It’s beautifully complemented by the matching ring and bracelet. Mademoiselle Coco Chanel herself used to say that “Elegance is line,” and we have to believe she would have loved the elegance of her namesake company’s new collection. Chanel.com

THE MCLAREN 675LT SPIDER BY LOGAN KUGLER

A

t a certain point, how much a car costs almost becomes irrelevant. You fall so insatiably in love with it that the price just becomes another line item on a document that is vastly overshadowed by your feelings for your new slice of heaven. This is one of those cars. It’s called the 675LT Spider. It’s the Ferrari 250 GTO of the modern era, complete with a retractable hardtop. And you’re going to want one as soon as you drive it. Better hurry though, because McLaren is only making 500 of them. Supposedly powered by the devil itself, with its 666HP 3.8-liter twin turbo V8 with 515 lb-ft of torque, the 675LT Spider can reach 60 mph in 2.8 seconds and has a top speed of 205 mph. It reaches 100 mph in less than six seconds. But the latest Ferraris and Lamborghinis can compete there. What they don’t even come close to matching is the way the 675LT handles. You’ll feel like F1 driver Lewis Hamilton in this car. And with a BMW Advanced M Driving School (available in both California and South Carolina) under your belt, you may actually become Hamilton in this car.

22

JETSETMAG.COM

The level of grip alone will blow your mind. One way to describe it is saying it’s like the hand of God holding you to the road. I have never experienced traction like this in any road-going car, and I’ve driven almost every exotic on the planet. Furthermore, so much emphasis was placed on weight reduction for the 675LT, even the piston rods were modified from the 650S to reduce weight. Air conditioning is, unsurprisingly, an optional add-on (get it, along with the optional electronic vehicle lifter that raises the car 1.5 inches, or you’ll lose your bumper on the first tall speed-bump). Dry weight is just 2,800 pounds —unheard of lightness for a convertible with anything other than a 4 cylinder. If you can even come close to pushing the limits of the 675LT, you will experience a euphoria behind the wheel that is utterly unparalleled from any automobile.

SWISS WATCHMAKER ARTYA INTRODUCES TWO EXCLUSIVE TIMEPIECES BY KAREN BROST

W

atch designer Yvan Arpa, who founded the Swiss brand ArtyA, is known for his audacious, creative, and avant-garde approach to watchmaking. For 2016 he has introduced two incredible one-of-a-kind timepieces, the ArtyA Cumbere Tourbillon and the ArtyA Son of Sound Magic Black Tourbillon. The first details you notice about these unique watches are their distinctive guitar-shaped cases and X-shaped structures inspired by the bracing used on guitars. Even the crowns are designed to look like guitar tuning pegs.

24

JETSETMAG.COM

Both watches are crafted from an alloy called ArtyOr, which is made out of gold, black Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD), and recycled bullets. Each watch features large sapphire crystals that allow the owner to see the intricate workings within, which include a hand-wound flying tourbillon movement. The structure of the Cumbere is hand-engraved with skulls and bones, while the Son of Sound Magic Black model sports a black PVD-blasted, hand-polished finish. Artya.com

The passion of one family By doug singer

S

ituated in the vine-draped hills of northern Napa Valley’s St. Helena, Trinchero Napa Valley serves to honor the legacy of its founder Mario Trinchero, whose family has been making wine in the region since 1948. 26

It was in 1960 when Mario’s son, Bob, took over the reigns as winemaker for the family’s first operating winery, Sutter Home. Since he was a young man, Bob had a dream of one day owning a winery JETSETMAG.COM

that honored his family’s rich history. Looking toward that future, the family purchased a collection of exceptional vineyards in the heart of Napa Valley in the 1980s, including Central Park West Vineyard and Mary’s Vineyard in St. Helena. By 2007, they had acquired more than 200 acres of prime Napa Valley soil, in some of the most soughtafter appellations — including Mt. Veeder, Atlas Peak, St. Helena, and Rutherford. It was in 2004 that the family purchased the Folie à Deux property north of St. Helena, and there they built the Trinchero Napa Valley Winery in 2007. That same year, the family added pedigreed winemaker, Mario Monticelli to the team and crushed their first

vintage, and it was 2009 that marked the inaugural release of Trinchero Napa Valley small-lot, estate-grown wines. Head Winemaker Mario Monticelli grew up in Northern California, where his Italian-born father— also a winemaker— sparked his interest in winemaking at an early age. Childhood visits to his grandparents’ home in Madera, California, exposed Mario to every aspect of the winemaking process, from grape growing to barrel aging. As a viticulture and enology student at the University of California, Davis, he traveled abroad to his family’s native Italy, studying and working at venerable producer Antinori in the heart of Chianti Classico. After college, Mario became the assistant winemaker at Melka Wines, assisting Philippe Melka in crafting some of the most celebrated wines in the Napa Valley including Quintessa, Hundred Acre, Vineyard 29, and Lail Vineyards before taking the reins as head winemaker for Quixote Winery. Since joining the Trinchero Napa Valley team, his wines have earned more than fifty scores of 90 or above including a score of 95+ for the 2010 Trinchero Napa Valley, Cloud’s Nest Vineyard, Cabernet Sauvignon. The Trinchero family has been recognized as one of the most successful wine families in the valley. Their success is built on a commitment to quality, sustainability, consistency and continuity. Building on a legacy nearly 70 years in the making, the Trinchero Napa Valley wines honor and reflect the pioneering spirit and core values of the family’s business: loyalty, strength, and innovation. The pinnacle of Napa Valley hospitality, Trinchero Napa Valley is a beautiful and inviting piece of land that is home to a state-ofthe-art winery, an intimate tasting room, bocce courts, caves, and a gourmet culinary center. Today, the winery is wholly owned and operated by the Trinchero family and continues to deliver an exquisite portfolio of fine wines. Trincheronapavalley.com

Italy When compiling a list of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, Italy perennially ranks atop or near the top of anyone’s list. The natural beauty rich history, art, cuisine, and accommodations always make it a favorite for cultured jetsetters. Now since it is so frequently visited by Americans, we decided to shy away from Rome — which has been covered ad nauseum in travel publications — and focus instead on three geographically stunning regions a little to the north: Verona, Milan, and Tuscany. Like Shakespeare with Romeo and Juliet, we start in fair Verona, a city characterized by its rich artistic heritage as well as its many

Palazzo Victoria

operas, plays, and annual fairs. One of northern Italy’s most popular tourist destinations, Verona is home to many ancient Roman monuments and edifices. Within Verona’s largest piazza, Piazza Bra, you will find the Arena — a massive Roman amphitheater that could seat some 25,000 spectators in its 44 tiers of marble seats. Other notable landmarks include the Gavi Arch, Piazza dei Signori, San Zeno Basilica, and the first-century Roman city gate, Porta Leoni. Directly across from another famous Roman city gate, Porta Borsari, you will find our favorite place to stay in Verona, Palazzo

Victoria. The service is seamless and every over-the-top amenity at this authentic 14th century palazzo is designed with the Jetset audience squarely in mind. For a once-in-a-lifetime experience try the Victoria’s Opera Serenade, which can be arranged in the privacy of your own suite. Or join the local Veronese for an Italian cocktail hour called “Aperitivo” at the exquisite Victoria Club Bar, where the atmosphere reflects the glamour and warmth of this incredible city. Simply put, Palazzo Victoria is the epitome of luxury, historical wonder, and Italian sophistication. We now move east to Milan, Italy’s second most populous city, and a place renowned as a global fashion and design capital. Italy’s

Park Hyatt Milan

main industrial, commercial, and financial epicenter always makes a tremendous vacation locale. One could literally spend days walking its streets, shopping and admiring the stunning architecture. Our favorite place to stay in Milan is without question the Park Hyatt Milan. Located in the heart of Milan’s regal city center, this worldclass, five-star resort is nothing short of spectacular. Each of the hotel’s 106 rooms and suites are individually styled with a tremendous amount of Milanese elegance, fine architectural details, and unparalleled design. As for activities in Milan, one simply cannot avoid the many galleries, restaurants, and opera houses that define the city. The

Michelin-starred Ristorante Cracco

Pinacoteca di Brera and Pinacoteca del Castello Sforzesco galleries, as well as the Santa Maria delle Grazie church (home to Michelangelo’s Last Supper), are must-visits. The same could be said about the legendary La Scala opera house or famed quadrilatero della moda fashion district (the latter is home to perhaps the greatest shopping in the world). The twice-a-year Milan Fashion week is a must-attend for any ardent sartorialist, but year-round the shopping is divine. As is the cuisine at Michelin-starred Ristorante Cracco, where chef Carlo Cracco offers innovative cuisine which combines the Milanese tradition with a modern touch. ISSUE 2 . 2016

Takeoff // Travel And last we turn to the south, to resplendent Tuscany, birthplace of the Italian Renaissance and a region characterized by its stunning landscapes, rich history, fine wines, and unparalleled high-culture. A staggering seven Tuscan locations have been designated World Heritage Sites: the historical centers of San Gimignano, Florence, Siena, and Pienza; the square of the Cathedral of Pisa; the Val d’Orcia; and the Medici Villas and Gardens. And one cannot talk about culture in Tuscany without mentioning the Galleria dell’Accademia (home to Michelangelo’s David) and the Galleria degli Uffizi. The latter is simply one of the greatest art

Galleria degli Uffizi

galleries on earth, and home to works by all the masters, including Leonardo, Michelangelo, Titian, Raphael, and of course, Botticelli — whose two most famous pieces, Primavera and The Birth of Venus, are on proud display. Tuscany has also over 120 protected nature reserves, making it and its capital of Florence absolutely breathtaking to behold. Perched on 12 acres of lush park and spread among the rolling Tuscan hills you’ll find our favorite place to stay in the region, Il Salviatino. This hand-restored, 15th century villa is just minutes outside the pulsing city of Firenze and features original frescoes, blooming organic gardens, and a vast, yet inviting terrace over-

looking the cityscape and its famed Duomo. Il Salviatino’s pure luxury, bespoke service, unique, personal touches offer an exclusive gateway to experiencing Florence and Tuscany. Guests are made to feel as if at home in their own private Italian villa, with all of the offerings and amenities of a five-star hotel — such as truffle hunting on the property grounds to private winery tours and family-style Tuscan dinners. While Tuscan cuisine is known for its simplicity, the region does feature a few unbelievable restaurants, such as Arnolfo and Palazzo Petrucci. Located in the city of Colle di Val d’Elsa, the former earned its two Michelin stars for the astonishingly delectable and creative array of courses its guests are treated to. The latter is a stylish restaurant with an intimate atmosphere located in a renovated 16th-century building and stables and featuring a revolving, seasonal menu based on local Neapolitan cuisine and enhanced with modern flavors. Both are borderline transcendent dining experiences.

With myriad world-class luxury hotels featuring incredible restaurants (the InterContinental has a staggering three Michelinstarred eateries), Hong-Kong is always a great choice for jetsetters. Located atop the luxury shopping complex that is Pacific Place, the Upper House is perhaps our favorite place to stay in Hong-Kong. This intimate, Andre Fu-designed hotel has a sleek, sophisticated, and tranquil ambiance. The service is impeccable and there is a plethora of striking modern art lining its walls. As for dining, Hong Kong is quite possibly the premier culinary destination in all of Asia. One of our favorite restaurants, RyuGin, delivers unbelievably innovative Japanese-style cuisine. Located on the 101st floor of the ICC building (Hong Kong’s tallest structure), the restaurant gives patrons sweeping panoramic views of the “Pearl of the Orient.” With its two Michelin stars, Ming Court at the Langham Place Hotel is always beloved by food critics. Beijing — Forbidden City

As for sights, the Shanghai Museum is almost overwhelming in its embarrassment of cultural and historical riches; 50 Moganshan Road is where to go for the best contemporary art galleries in Asia; and the Bund (or Waitan) is the grand center of Colonial architecture in Shanghai. We also love savoring a drink while overlooking the vistas at Vue Bar on the 32nd and 33rd floors of the Hyatt on the Bund. As for restaurants, Jean-Georges Shanghai lives up to its name’s legendary reputation and features an unbelievable array of the finest ingredients blended together to form breathtaking flavor combinations. Over in Beijing you’ll find the bulk of China’s historical sights. A former home to emperors, the Forbidden City was the Chinese imperial palace from the Ming dynasty to the end of the Qing dynasty. Located in the center of Beijing, it now houses the stunning Palace Museum. The Great Wall is of course also a must-visit, as are the Temple of Heaven, Beihai Park, Tiananmen Square, and the Summer Palace. Nothing makes experiencing the latter (the best-

fuses both traditional and modern cuisine, a juxtaposition which is reinforced through an aesthetic blend of contemporary design and Ming Dynasty pottery. China’s largest city, Shanghai, has a little something for everyone. Whether it be art or fashion or architecture, the city is amongst the finest in all of Asia. The amalgam of modern and art deco buildings, museum, art galleries, markets, churches, and temples make it a sight to behold. Located on the banks of the gorgeous Huangpu River, the Mondrian Oriental is simply our favorite place to stay in the city. Jetset readers know the cachet the Mondrian name caries, but there is just something about the Shanghai location — surrounded by glittering skyscrapers reflecting off of the tranquil river — that just captures our heart every time.

Set in a series of historic pavilions that once housed guests of the Imperial Court, this luxury hotel adeptly evokes all the opulence of imperial China. For those who desire to stay somewhere with an atheistic more artistic than historical, we cannot say enough about Éclat. Located in Beijing’s Parkview Green, every inch of this 100-room luxury boutique hotel is an astonishing work of art. We recommend one of its 20 individually-styled suites with its own private indoor terrace and lagoon. And as for dining, the secluded Temple Restaurant Beijing delivers life-altering French cuisine inside a renovated 600 year-old building on the grounds of a centuries-old Ming Dynasty complex. Caribbean sailing areas fall into three main categories: the Leewards, Windwards, and the offshore U.S. islands — be sure you research your route before you plot your yachting adventure. For the over 1,100 years that it has been in existence, Prague has remained an artistic, political, economic, and cultural epicenter in Europe. The current capitol of the Czech Republic, the city was once also the capitol of the Holy Roman Empire. Always a favorite Jetset destination, few locales on earth can contend with Prague’s rich history, fine cuisine, and cultural splendor. The best place to start your journey in Prague is in its compact City Center. Located right in the heart of the city, City Center is a bustling, centralized hub of vibrant culture divided into five distinctive regions along both banks of the Vltava River: Old Town (Staré Město), with the Old Town Square at its heart; New Town (Nové Město), with Wenceslas Square at its heart; the storied Jewish Quarter (Josefov); Lesser Town (Malá Strana); and further up, the Castle District (Hradčany), overlooked by the splendid wonder that is Prague Castle. Prague Castle is less of a castle and more of a massive, 9th century castle complex. The Guinness Book of World Records recognizes it as the largest ancient castle in the world and it occupies an area of over 40 square miles. The official residence of the Czech president, Miloš Zeman, the castle was once also a seat of power for kings of Bohemia JETSETMAG.COM

Located just off of Wenceslas Square, the intimate, stunninglydecorated, Michelin-starred Alcron serves delectable international dishes to no more than 24 people at a time. About a two-hour drive from City Center you will find one of the most marvelous attractions in all of the Czech Republic, the Zeliv Monastery. Established in 1139 and surrounded by serene nature, over the years this architectural wonder has withstood many fires and underwent numerous restorations but its original magnificence still remains. From Zeliv be sure to traverse 90 minutes to the Zelena Hora – The Church of St. John of Nepomuk — a storied religious monument near the border of Moravia and Bohemia. The final work of Jan Santini

The beautiful, terraced castle gardens are a must to walk, with their Renaissance loggia with frescoes of Pompeii, and baroque portal with a sundial that exquisitely catches the reflected sunlight off the water in a Triton fountain. From Prague Castle to Wenceslas Square, you can traverse all of City Center in just 25 minutes. And as far as we’re concerned, the best place to stay there is the stately Four Seasons Hotel Prague. Comprising three marvelous, baroque and Renaissance-styled Old Town buildings, this five-star bastion of class is less than a minute on foot from the metro station and a five-minute walk to the historic Charles Bridge (tours of which are highly recommended). An hour from the church you’ll find the historic city of Trebic with its many fabled landmarks. The St. Procopius Basilica, and Jewish Quarter have together been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site (the only monuments outside of Israel to be placed on the list). Built on the site of the original Virgin Mary’s Chapel of the Benedictine Monastery 1240, the basilica and adjacent castle are available to the public to tour, while the Jewish Quarter is one of the best preserved Jewish ghettos in Europe and a powerful monument to Jewish history. From the Quarter you can leisurely stroll to the center of Trebic and ascend City Tower for sweeping views of this magnificent city. ISSUE 2 . 2016

f you’re an avid golfer, you would no doubt prefer to spend your time conquering a great course over looking for one, so we’ve done your work for you. Here are seven prime picks for your next golf outing. You’ll find that they deliver the challenges you crave and the level of luxury you demand, all while offering plenty of mesmerizing views. Just don’t let them distract you from your “A” game.

Quivira Clubhouse

Quivira Golf Club - 17th Hole

Quivira golf club Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

The drama of this Jack Nicklaus Signature course starts with its location at the tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula. This makes it possible for all 18 holes to offer views of the Pacific, which is more than any other course in Los Cabos. As Nicklaus himself so aptly said of the course’s rare setting, “Our team worked with the canvas Mother Nature provided to create one of the most spectacular courses in the world.” If you’re a golfer who likes a variety of terrain, you’ll find that this par 72, which offers a choice of five tee placements, really delivers. It starts at sea level, scales 275-foot ocean cliffs, crosses canyons and arroyos, and winds through dunes and desert terrain before finishing up at the beach. To gear up for this challenge, you can head to the oceanfront, double-ended driving range or the short game practice area. Then, after playing a round, you can celebrate your successes (or relive your challenges) at the 19th hole in the club’s thatched-roof, beachfront clubhouse. Quivira Golf Club is part of Quivira Los Cabos, an exclusive, 1,850-acre, master-planned community offering more than three miles of pristine beaches and panoramic ocean views. LINKS Magazine listed it among golf course communities “Best for Living Abroad” and World Property Journal named Copala at Quivira one of the top five “Great Golf Resort Communities of 2015.” Quiviragolfclub.com Quiviraloscabos.com

One look at Monarch Beach Golf Links’ picturesque setting (combined with the fact that it was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr.), and it’s easy to see why the course has hosted nationally-televised golf events and top golfers such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Julie Inkster, Dottie Pepper, and more. What you’ll discover when you first arrive at this magnificent, 18-hole, 6,344-yard, par70 course are sweeping ocean views and challenges that await you on the tight fairways and small, undulating greens. No wonder Golf Digest has named it one of the “Best Places to Play.” And the area’s mild climate makes it a favorite choice for golfers year round. Naturally, you’ll also need a place to stay, and the St. Regis Monarch Beach resort provides the ultimate beach getaway — it’s California’s only Mobil Five Star and AAA Five Diamond award recipient. Set on a cliff top overlooking the Pacific, the spacious resort spans 172 acres and has recently undergone a major renovation. The newly-restyled guest rooms have been redone in a refreshing coastal palette of blues, greens, and whites, perfect for a relaxing beach retreat. One of the hallmarks of the St. Regis guest experience is its legendary butler service that is available to guests staying in any of the resort’s 75 suites. A St. Regis Butler will unpack and pack your luggage, press garments, provide in-room French press coffee

or exotic tea service, and take care of any other requests you may have, right down to shopping for a special gift to bring back to a loved one. Butler service is also included in the resort’s “Fit Fore VIPs” golf package, which promises to provide golfers with the experience of a lifetime. It includes private limousine service; a personal club fitting at the world headquarters of Titleist, TaylorMade, or Callaway; and unlimited daily golf with the services of one of the resort’s Waterman personal forecaddies. As you would expect from a resort of this caliber, the dining opportunities at the St. Regis Monarch Beach are as varied as they are extraordinary. This year, the resort opened four new dining venues: a lobby lounge called 33° North, the Part & Parcel Market, a grab-andgo coffee shop, the oceanfront Aveo Table + Bar (which specializes in

healthy Mediterranean cuisine), and the poolside cantina, Sombra. And with the resort’s attentive 24-hour room service, a multi-course dinner can be delivered in perfectly-timed stages. But the pièce de résistance of the dining experience at the St. Regis Monarch Beach is a trip to Chef Michael Mina’s highly-acclaimed Stonehill Tavern. This Forbes Four-Star restaurant specializes in modern American cuisine based on fresh, local ingredients. The chef offers a full menu (his signature dish is lobster pot pie) as well as a seasonal prix fixe menu. Port Royal Golf Club Hilton Head Island, SC

Set in the popular Lowcountry resort area of Hilton Head Island on the Atlantic Coast, Port Royal Golf Club is home to three 18-hole courses designed by George W. Cobb, Willard C. Byrd, and Pete Dye. The par-72 Barony Course was one of the first courses on the island. The greens are generous to golfers, but the bunkers are not, so accuracy is essential. Robber’s Row has the distinction of sitting atop former Civil War grounds, and historical markers are placed throughout this par 72 course. Its greens are well protected. And the words “tough love” have been used to describe the challenge of playing the par-72 Planter’s Row course, because it has water on 10 of its 18 holes and small, undulating greens. The newly-refurbished Copperhead Course at Tampa’s Innisbrook Resort recently hosted the PGA Tour’s Valspar Championship Presented by BB&T where former Masters Champion Charl Schwartzel took the top prize. Enhancements to the course included regrassing of all fairways and roughs, the rebuilding of each green, and the reshaping of the bunkers to stay true to the masterful design of the course’s legendary architect Larry Packard. Fifteen new forward tees were also added to enhance the experience for players of all skill levels, but the length of the course for tour professionals remains at a challenging 7,340 yards. An additional tier was added to the driving range and a new practice green was also added, which may very well be necessary to prepare for an experience the golf resort describes as “the Copperhead Bites Back.”

Recently, Parsons introduced The PXG Experience whereby a privileged few might be fitted for PXG equipment at the company’s headquarters and gain access to Parsons’ ultra-exclusive golf club, Scottsdale National. Parsons acquired what is now Scottsdale National in 2013 and made a significant investment in preserving the raw beauty of the site. There are no homes lining the fairways or anywhere else on the property, which is protected on three sides by over 40,000 acres of beautiful desert. Because of the Club’s exclusive membership, the course is always wide open and ready for play. Tee times are never necessary and golfers will seldom see another group. The PXG Experience is the ultimate union of course and club. The three-day immersion program begins with a custom club fitting by PXG’s top engineers. “When someone is professionally JETSETMAG.COM

Being fit by the guys who actually had a hand in designing the clubs, well that’s something only a select few can say they’ve experienced.” Guests can then christen the clubs over two or three rounds at Scottsdale National. Add outstanding service and exceptional food to the equation and you’ve got a once-in-lifetime experience only Parsons could offer. “Life is about the stories,” Parsons added. “Golfers who take part in The PXG Experience get to tell a very special one indeed.” For more information about PXG, its products and The PXG Experience, visit www.PXG.com or call 844.PLAY.PXG.

By Daymond John

I

n the last issue, I broke down in detail what the power of broke is. For this column I am going to tell you exactly how you can tap into this incredible power. As I said before, the power of broke is about working harder, faster, smarter, and more efficiently, so let’s take a look at one of the ways we can all be doing that — no matter where we live, who we know, or what industry or business we’re trying to disrupt. And let’s be clear: You don’t have to be a tech-visionary like my friend Gary Vaynerchuk. You don’t have to be Jeff Bezos. You don’t have to have millions of dollars in the bank or a bunch of seed money behind you. No, you just have to have the passion, ingenuity, hustle, and drive: the entrepreneurial heart. Since my last column, The Power of Broke, has been released and become a New York Times bestseller. And as I travel the country promoting it, I keep encountering people whose lives this philosophy has affected. Many of these people had already found the power of broke on their own; I just gave it a name. And as they share their incredible stories with me and tell me how this philosophy has changed their lives, what I keep remembering time and time again is that it starts with goals. You must have goals, set them firmly, and never lose sight of them. And that brings me to my first of five SHARK Points for unleashing the power of broke:

SET A GOAL It all comes down to knowing where you’re headed. Surely your past business experience has taught you that things rarely ever turn out as planned, so be realistic on this. Aim too high and you’re bound to be frustrated, disappointed; aim too low and you might leave some opportunities on the table, so take the time to get it right. Think what’s possible in a best-case scenario. Think what’s possible in a worst-case scenario. Think what’s in reach. Then reach a little more—but set it all down on paper. Commit to it. These days, I’m all about writing down my goals on a piece of paper. At any given time, I’ll have about seven goals that I spend some time with about five days each week — I try to give myself two days in there where I can just relax, refresh. I’ll read over these goals at night, so they’re the last things I think about before I go to sleep. Sometimes this helps me to dream about them — that’s the idea. Then I’ll read them again in the morning, first thing—and the idea here is that I can hopefully make a small step forward in each of these areas if I set everything in motion before the rest of the day runs away from me.

HOMEWORK, DO YOURS In almost every business, analytics are key. Know your field, know your competitors, know your stuff. After all, if you don’t know your JETSETMAG.COM

stuff, how can you hope to know what’s possible? How can you prepare yourself for what’s coming? So part of doing your homework means appreciating the history of your idea, your market, and your competition. “A fool can learn from his own mistakes, but a wise man learns from the mistakes of others.” That’s a line I picked up from Mr. Magic, an old-school radio deejay from New York. The thought behind it reinforces this concept that there are no new ideas—only new ways to execute those ideas. Homework these days means analytics. It means looking at others who’ve succeeded in the same field. But go ahead and also look at all the businesses that failed to connect with your market, and see what you can learn from their missteps. These people failed so you don’t have to. Why fail on your own dime and on your own time if you don’t have to? Say you’ve already had great success in one field and now you’re contemplating another, radically different one, you must do your homework!

“So what makes you happy? What are you passionate about? Figure it out and embrace it.”

ADORE WHAT YOU DO Never, ever underestimate the immense power of passion. You’ve got to love, love, love what you’re doing — otherwise, why not do something else? “The only way to do great work is to do what you love.” That one’s from Steve Jobs, and it’s been repeated into the ground, but I’m repeating it here because it’s an all-important point. Own it, love it, live it...and you can find a way to make it work. Do you love what you do? Would you do it for free? If not, then maybe you should think about doing something else. Sure, money

Altitude // Shark Talk and success can be powerful motivators, and for a lot of us our bottom line is our bottom line, but even a little guy like Moziah Bridges (the 11-year-old kid with the great bow tie business I invested on Shark Tank), knows that out of his joy in making great ties, good things will come. So what makes you happy? What are you passionate about? What’s your bow tie? Figure it out and embrace it. Once you make joy your biggest asset, you’re way ahead of the game.

REMEMBER, YOU ARE THE BRAND I opened my book The Brand Within with: “You are what you eat. You are what you wear. You are what you drive, where you live, what you drink, how you vote, what you stand for, how you love, hate, dedicate...you with me on this?” I still feel the same way today, especially when it comes to building a business or career. With the advent and expansion of social media, branding has only become more and more crucial and omnipresent. In my new book I tell the story of Gigi Butler, a Nashville woman who started up a cupcake business with just $33 to her name. It is a tremendous tale of the American entrepreneurial spirit and the power of broke in action. You see, Gigi has been nurturing the “Gigi” brand her entire life. At fifteen, she put her name on her first cleaning business. After that, her first band carried her name. At each step along the way, she’s worked hard to ensure that the name would stand for something genuine, something real, something of value. And people connect to that. Because it’s all about how you carry yourself, what you put out into the world, the way you interact with your audience, your customers, the marketplace — it’s on you. So represent it faithfully.

KEEP SWIMMING Even when they’re asleep, sharks are slipping through the ocean, swimming, scheming, getting ready to attack—which is pretty much the approach you have to take when you’re starting out in business. You have to be relentless, nimble, moving ever forward. No matter what. And real sharks out in the ocean, if they don’t keep swimming, they die — so keep this in mind, too. If you’re reading Jetset, chances are that you have attained a certain level of success. You have worked hard, set goals, and like many of the people I have been encountering, followed the power of broke whether you knew it or not. But the key now is to maintain that power so that you never become stagnant. And as nice as it is to chill by the beach and enjoy the fruits of your labor (which you should be doing from time to time), you can never stop swimming, scanning the vast ocean and searching for your next multimillion or (hopefully) multibillion-dollar idea.

To understand these SHARK Points more fully, check out the guide I’ve created specifically for you at: DaymondJohn.com/ PowerofBroke. It’s a dynamic resource designed to help you wrap your head around this SHARK mind-set, and to guide you as you begin to tap into assets you might not even know you have. And know this: no matter how old you are, the power of broke never leaves you. It’s not something you outgrow, outpace, or outearn. It’s not something you can shake once you get a couple bucks in the bank. No, it gets in your DNA—and that’s a good thing, because you’ll almost certainly need to call on it throughout your career. So keep swimming.

merica’s real estate market contains many niches, with tremendous diversity of participants and asset types. When it comes to real estate in America, size definitely does not fit all. That diversity is a key strength because it promotes liquidity, price discovery, and opportunities to enter or exit the market. The following are my views on some of this year’s top trends affecting real estate that you should definitely be aware of.

ISSUE 2 . 2016

61

Interest rates After years of anticipation, we are now living in the era of rising rates. The underlying question is how the generation whose entire business careers have been shaped by a low interest rate environment will respond to the upward movement in the price of money. The higher the price of money will undoubtedly cut into investors’ profits and future cash flow. And it is my belief that higher rates will alter behaviors, but to what degree? And at what threshold? Statements by Federal Reserve officials emphasize that their plans are data dependent. That is, if the economy falters, then the interest rate hikes will be postponed. If the economy strengthens, the rate hikes could be sooner and more pronounced. Keep an eye on this as higher interest rates will certainly slow progress in the real estate market.

Water The historic drought afflicting the western United States has brought cascading impacts to the region and to the nation. The availability and cost of water will have a major impact on pricing and future development. Cities whose economic energy has been driven by population increases must confront limits on growth that are defined by water availability and cost. Although a strong El Niño for winter 2016 brought much needed rain, the water deficit west of the 100th Meridian is a factor that real estate should watch closely in the years ahead. Semiconductor plants require enormous amounts of water for operations, as do the “cloud storage” data centers now so integral to the our Internet connectivity. Even something minuscule like the snow-making machines at ski resorts (which become even more essential when mother nature is uncooperative in providing the white stuff) draw large quantities of water to keep the region’s resort and recreation businesses humming. As water for irrigation has become more problematic and costly, so too have food prices for crops ranging from almonds and artichokes to pistachios and raisins. As output is constrained, signs of declining farmland values are being seen. Most Americans tend to think of a “water crisis” as something that happens in very dry places such as Africa or the Middle East, but the truth is that almost the entire western half of the United States is historically a very dry JETSETMAG.COM

place. Look for U.S. water bills to likely to soar in the coming years, thus affecting population growth and movement.

Affordability Primarily in the multi-family arena we have seen substantial rental growth over the last several years in some high-demand markets. This has resulted in rental rates increasing as much as fifty percent. This puts the strain on rental affordability. Renters have responded with doubling up via roommates (an increasing trend), and/or moving to smaller more affordable units. Watch for developments moving away from cities to more rural areas where land is cheaper. Wage growth has simply not followed this rental growth and we are seeing the beginning of some massive changes to come in making housing more affordable.

“The higher the price of money will undoubtedly cut into investors’ profits and future cash flow.”

On another very serious note, the Supreme Court has affirmed that local communities can take legal action to address disparities in housing, even if they are the unintentional result of actions rather than conscious discrimination. This is a massive change in the law. This could alter where affordable housing is built, and where households in need of such housing may move. The primary barriers to affordable housing production remain local regulation, development costs (labor and materials), and land costs. Watch for a heated debate on multi-family development against the background the U.S. Supreme Court and HUD rulings. One positive trend (and one of the ways the affordable housing stock is being increased efficiently and effectively) is the support of the new single-family rental companies. Look for this to be an emerging industry this year. These companies own single family houses, they maintain them, and they rent them out with a pretty big chunk as affordable housing. This is really an emerging industry, one that I think is going to come into its own in the next 18 months.

Senior Housing The Baby Boomers have long been anticipated as a huge market for senior housing choices. Yet, as in so many other instances, this generation has confounded expectations. Right now, in early retirement (or deferred retirement), Boomers are more likely to be empty nesters than seek their long-range housing solution. But this will change with time. Today the average age of someone in senior housing is about 85. That’s up significantly and continues to increase. We are seeing people live longer, and with higher acuity. Senior housing is still a lifestyle choice, but it’s a necessitated lifestyle choice. People are selling their home to make a different lifestyle choice. It’s like going back to apartment living, except that you’ve got food, entertainment, companionship, and healthcare. The option is appealing, and many Baby Boomers will elect assisted living. But the oldest Baby Boomer is still under 70 years of age right now, so it’s on the horizon. We can glimpse the future opportunity and still recognize execution issues for now. Selling the existing home is, for now, not a “given.” Shortfalls in savings are a problem for many households, and fewer than half of U.S. households have retirement accounts. Those who are near retirement age and have such accounts have a median balance of only $104,000, according to a 2015 study conducted by the National Institute of Retirement Security. Those without such accounts have median savings of just $14,500. In light of such economics, senior housing (like so many other investment segments) requires careful scrutiny and acutely targeted selection. Secondary Markets Some of MC Companies’ strategies for 2016 involve experts in key secondary markets. Over time we have found that pricing resistance has been an issue for primary markets. Secondary markets, especially “18-hour” cities, are emerging as great relative value propositions. Such markets are hip, urban, walkable, and attractive to the millennials, while providing better future opportunities for rising net income and appreciation more so than the “24-hour” city markets that led the post-financial crisis real estate recovery. These secondary markets (think Austin, Portland, Nashville, Charlotte...) boast lower costs of living (particularly in housing), and strong growth potential. As the cost of living and housing prices

64

have risen in the core gateway markets, it is apparent that a fresh look at suburban opportunities is gaining investor favor. In the top 40 U.S. metro areas, 84 percent of all jobs are outside the center city core and that’s the basis for optimism for the suburban future. Asset selection in secondary markets should pay off as a 2016 strategy.. 2016 EXPECTATIONS BY ASSET CLASS

Industrial Industrials will be at the top of the commercial property sector for investment and development prospects. Investors like the value-forprice relationship in a property type where the average cap rate is about seven percent, the downside protection afforded by the triplenet leases that are typical in this sector, and the cash-in-hand quality of industrials. Apartments The multi-family sector has enjoyed a long run of success during this decade, and while we still rate this prospect highly, the high prices and low cap rates in many locations are giving some investors pause as they contemplate the future. There may be a shift in investment and development outlook in 2016 and beyond, although the demand appears to be good for several more years. Truthfully I have never seen the apartment sector so good. That will change. There is too much building in some markets. High rent increases will have to come down. In many cases, this is a great market to sell. Investing is more challenging.

Office The breadth of the U.S. office market is one of its greatest strengths and having options always provides value. For that reason, secondary office markets are experiencing higher levels of investment. We are seeing somewhat greater volatility priced by higher yields, and the ability to accommodate fast-growing companies with a volume of new construction at a cost much lower than that available in the primary downtowns. Investors are looking for “pocket markets,” conversions, redevelopments, and opportunities to reposition struggling suburban office parks with vast parking into more effective mixed use.

Hotels A rising U.S. dollar is making international travel to the United States more costly for tourists and business visitors. This could show up in lower occupancy in 2016 for the hotel sector, especially for fullservice facilities. While the overall development and investment outlook for both of those segments is up from 2015, many investors are considering selling before the anticipated reduction of cash flow due to potential lower occupancies. Take notice.

Retail For neighborhood/community centers, investors are once again considering 2016 as a recovering year for smaller shopping centers, potentially giving them new life. This is the biggest change in over a dozen years. At malls, institutional returns on the top tier have surpassed the performance measures of the smaller shopping centers by a considerable margin. For technology, e-commerce, and multichannel retailing, the “bricks and clicks” discussion will get sharper; stores are adapting e-commerce while internet retailers have increasingly been dabbling in physical stores as a supplement to online sales. (For more on this trend, check out Barry Labov’s article on Page __.) Single-Family Housing Quite a hangover still remains from the U.S. housing market collapse, epitomized by the subprime mortgage-induced bubble a decade ago. More than 7.4 million homeowners are still seriously underwater as of mid-2015, with the market value of the homes still lower than 25 percent or more than the outstanding mortgage balance, according to Realty Trac. Based on such data, some investors still see a slow recovery in the suburban housing markets and a disincentive for home buying. On a positive note, residential starts came in at 1.2 million for the months of June and July 2015 — the best construction activity for

66

JETSETMAG.COM

housing since late 2007. Even more telling, the growth was spurred by single-family housing after apartment development had provided the momentum during the past several years. The elements of a housing development that trend toward greater normalcy are falling into place, after the catastrophic collapse a decade ago. The inventory of finished new homes for sale is 5.4 months, right in line with historical averages, and price increases are beginning to reflect scarcity on the supply side. This condition sets the stage for further gains in 2016, since there is a shortage of ready-to-build housing lots. Banks are still skittish about land and development loans which was a major source of losses for them during the financial crisis. This has been good for the supply side and has meant that builders have not been able to get the pipeline for production anywhere near historical capacity. The highly-favored multi-family rental sector has enjoyed a long run of success during this decade. Our emerging trends survey’s respondents still rate its prospects well, yet the extraordinarily high prices and low cap rates in many locations are giving quite a few of our interviewees pause as they contemplate the future. We may well be seeing the beginning of a shift in investment/ development outlook as we go forward in 2016 and beyond. Pay close attention to all these trends as they may greatly affect and help augment your portfolios.

“So how can retailers best appeal to both showroomers and webroomers? The answer is not a single solution.”

USING OMINCHANNEL STRATEGIES TO EFFECTIVELY REACH MODERN RETAIL SHOPPERS BY BARRY LABOV

E

very year, millions of consumers take advantage of online shopping and the convenience it offers. But as online shopping has gained in popularity, the concern has been that brick-and-mortar stores will suffer and even start to disappear altogether. However, the most successful retailers have learned how to turn the online marketplace to their advantage. This recent evolution in purchasing behavior has given rise to two distinct kinds of shoppers — “showroomers” and “webroomers.”

ISSUE 2 . 2016

69

Showroomers are consumers who browse products at physical stores and then price shop and purchase them online — getting the best deal available. Webroomers, on the other hand, are those who research products online and then visit stores to makes their purchases. A survey by Merchant Warehouse found that nearly 75 percent of respondents said they will visit a store to purchase an item they’ve researched online for several reasons: they don’t want to pay for shipping, they don’t want to wait for delivery, they want the option of returning the item to a store rather than paying for return shipping, and so on…. According to a Forrester Research study, it’s estimated that webrooming will result in $1.8 trillion in sales by 2017. While showrooming will continue to factor prominently in the world of retail and online shopping, the escalating popularity of webrooming is producing many sales tactics that you’ve probably noticed if you’re an online shopper. For example, more and more online retailers are providing the capability to not only research a product, but find out if it’s in stock at a local store. Some sites go so far as to tell the consumer the aisle number where the product can be found. Many retailers are also offering online shoppers free shipping to a local store if the product isn’t already in stock at the store. Or if a product is in stock, retail sites offer the ability to purchase the product online and pick it up in the store the same day. Both options give the webroomer the ability to visit the store, pick up the product, decide if it’s what he or she wanted, and return it if need be. So how can retailers best appeal to both showroomers and webroomers? The answer is not a single solution, but rather a

retailing approach that seamlessly blends the online, mobile and instore shopping experience. In order to fully engage each of them, it is essential to use an omnichannel strategy that will effectively reach them in both the virtual and real worlds. For example, if there is something a customer is looking for in a store that isn’t in stock in the right color, size, etc., that stores may offer to order it online and have it shipped to the customer’s home free of charge. It’s better to pay a few dollars to ship an item to a

customer than to lose the sale entirely to another store. It’s all part of creating a seamless, personal shopping experience that consumers desire — from product research to the decision to buy to the actual purchase and, if necessary, the return of the product. An omnichannel strategy can help retailers direct business where they need it most. If they want to drive consumers to their stores, they can deliver coupons to them during their online shopping sessions that are redeemable only in stores. And when it comes to showrooming, if a retailer doesn’t want to lose a sale after a consumer goes online to compare prices elsewhere, they can offer a price match, securing the sale then and there. Many stores also offer free Wi-Fi, which allows consumers to do their online price comparisons while still in the store and gives the retailer an opportunity to match prices before they walk out the door. Innovative retailers must begin to enhance their in-store shopping experience by incorporating online features in the store. For example, providing an overview of online product ratings and reviews within the store gives savvy shoppers insight from others who’ve purchased the products. Whether consumers are showrooming or webrooming, the retailers who are going to be successful moving forward are the ones who make the shopping experience more convenient by implementing omnichannel strategies. It’s all about meeting customers’ preferences in-store, online, and on the go. Because, as Einstein said, “The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.”

everal years ago my doctor recommended that I see a cardiologist. And that cardiologist recommended that I schedule heart surgery. But I didn’t like the doctor, his approach, or the way I was treated. When I shared those trepidations with a friend (who was a chiropractor by profession), he encouraged me to get a second opinion. He also cautioned me: “You must be aligned both spiritually and philosophically with your doctor.” JETSETMAG.COM

“A wise man should consider that health is the greatest of human blessings, and learn how by his own thought to derive benefit from his illnesses.” — Hippocrates

I had no idea what he was talking about. When I asked him to explain this he said, “Healing is not physical. Healing is spiritual—because health is spiritual.” He went on to say: “You must give your spirit a chance to heal you. Your doctor may be a good person, but if he is not aligned with you spiritually, he could kill you.” So with his help, my search for the perfect cardiologist began.

My Second Opinion Finally, weeks later, my friend called and said, “I’ve found him!” “Where is he?” I asked. “You won’t believe this,” he said, “I called my friend in London and asked for his recommendation on the best cardiologist in the world.” My friend in London laughed and said, “You won’t believe this. The best cardiologist in the world trained with me in London — and just moved to Phoenix, Arizona.” And that’s how I met Dr. Radha Gopalan. When I walked into his office in Phoenix, the bond was instantaneous. It was like old souls meeting. I knew I had found my doctor…the second opinion I was seeking. Radha has become a great friend and an advisor on more than health. His views on the spirit, healing, and vital energy have changed my life for the better.

No Ordinary Doctor As Radha worked with me as both a doctor and teacher, I learned more about him as a person, and I began to realize that he was no ordinary doctor. He has come a very long way from a tiny village in Sri Lanka, a journey he describes in his book, Second Opinion. Today Radha’s position as a heart transplant cardiologist puts him in a unique position amongst other doctors. Whenever a patient requires organ transplant surgery — be it a heart, liver, kidney, lungs, or bone marrow transplant — the patient’s doctor comes to Dr. Gopalan for a second opinion. It is up to Radha to decide if they’re a viable candidate for organ transplant surgery. In other words: Is the patient worthy of such a gift, for this miracle of modern medicine? It is much like lawyers seeking a judge’s opinion on behalf of their client. From his unique position, Radha has viewed the world of medicine, doctors, patients, disease, and health...all filtered through a mind trained in the disciplines of both Eastern and Western medical philosophies. It is his opinion — as a second opinion — that often determines the life or death of another doctor’s patient. I have learned two very important lessons in my life: Wealth without health can be meaningless… and that a rich life is about much more than money. After getting to know Dr. Gopalan, I encouraged him to share what he has seen, what he knows, and what he thinks about...as both an Eastern and a Western doctor. I wanted him to share with you, as he has with me, his experience and insights and his belief that we — ourselves — have the power to influence our health and wellness.

or years people have argued as to what is more important in life. A longer life? A healthy life? A life with financial riches, or a life filled with happiness and contentment? Current evidence suggests that wealthy people tend to live longer than poor people. But it does not suggest that wealth confers health.

Another question would be, What confers health? This is a loaded question. There is so much hype about health because it is very important to each of us. It can mean life or death. There is so much information about what to do and what not to do when it comes to health. As a cardiologist, I had both; I am an expert in knowing what to do and what not to do with regard to heart attacks and, statistically, I fall into the 2% of the U.S population that are “considered” wealthy. Statistics would suggest that I should live longer because I am considered wealthy. This statistic should be further improved because I am also an expert on health, disease, and medicine. Additionally, I am an expert not only in Western medicine but also in Eastern medicine. With that kind of depth and understanding about health and disease,

sick and very poor people who never have to go to a hospital until they die of old age. So, what matters? Based on 30 years of experience in health, disease and medicine, here’s what I have come to believe: Being healthy is not about what you do or don’t do, it is about who you must be. When I was staring at death in the emergency room at the time of my heart attack, what came to my rescue was a power within me, facilitated by tools that I had learned from Eastern medicine. Afterward, I used Western medicine to obtain the best treatment possible. Today I practice medicine as a cardiologist and heart transplant consultant for a world-class hospital in one of this country’s largest cities. And every day, after hours of interaction with patients at the hospital, I walk home heavy-hearted, dissatisfied and frustrated. I know, deep down, that as a Western medical doctor I have not helped any of my patients to the extent to which I could have. I have only suggested interventions from the Western medical world, which is only 30 percent of the story — and by no means the complete story. While I know that Eastern medical thoughts and disciplines are effective in treating patients, I am not at liberty to recommend these modalities. Even if I was able to do so, Eastern medicine adds only another 30 percent to the story. The third 30 percent comes from you and your “being.” It is what I call “You Power.” And the last 10 percent is left to chance…the unknown.

what are the odds of developing a catastrophic medical condition? You are likely to say, “It is very low.” That’s what I thought. This however was not the case. At age 43, I had a heart attack. With all that I knew about heart attacks, it did not prevent me from getting one. My financial status did not prevent a heart attack either. Years later, when I read Robert’s books on finance, I learned that I am really not rich—even though I am statistically in that top 2% of American taxpayers. All in all, I have been walking around thinking that I understood health, disease, and medicine, that I am well off financially, and that, therefore, I have a healthy life. In retrospect, that appears to be delusional thinking. I have met wealthy people who are unhappy and I have met poor people who are happy and content. I have seen very rich people get JETSETMAG.COM

We live in a world of mixed medical messages and confusion related to health and disease. The health care delivery system, today, is rather a “sick care system.” So many of us (like me) are reminded of health only when disease strikes. Some are reminded of health only when they reach their 40s, 50s, and 60s and start to feel the aging process taking its toll. Yet others think of health only when they can no longer perform or function at a level that gave them a good quality of life. At that point we go in search of remedies to cure us of disease or reclaim a healthy state. In fact our intention at that point is seldom even about getting healthy — it is about getting rid of disease, living longer, or performing better. We seek out cures from either Western medicine or from Eastern medicine…or both. We erroneously think

Altitude // Health Thirty years in the field of medicine has allowed me to witness tremendous advances in medicine. Organ transplants are providing patients with a second chance at life. Mechanical devices such as total artificial hearts and heart-assist devices are helping people to live longer and enjoy an enhanced quality of life. Technology — from high-tech imaging devices to the da Vinci Robotic Surgery System — has created a new normal for how we assess and address disease. Improvements in treatment options for cancer are progressing at a rapid pace. Researchers and scientists are making tremendous strides in stem-cell research. One could easily claim that the most significant medical advancements have been made in the field of cardiology. Yet heart disease is still the #1 killer in the world. Despite all the therapies and treatments that we have to offer patients, they still struggle with illness and disease. The negative aspects of the burden of disease continue to far outweigh the positive outcomes that patients experience. Patients and healthy people alike continue to be frustrated, unhappy, and confused as they struggle with issues related to health and where to turn for answers, advice, and guidance. This dilemma has prompted me to ask myself the same questions over and over again: Are we focusing on the wrong aspects of our health

and wellness resources to accomplish our goals of improved health, quality of life, and long life? And, What are we missing? Here are a few of my personal observations that I believe that individual patients—you and me—need to be made aware of and empowered to address:

that either of these medicines or a combination of these two will make us healthy. This kind of thinking cannot be farther from the truth. The bottom line is that medicines and/or treatments do not make you healthy…YOU do. It is my belief that we are responsible for—and create or perpetuate—our own illness. My efforts during the past few years in trying to combine Eastern and Western medicine into the current health care system have been less successful than I had hoped, because Western medicine is either not interested in it or is threatened and afraid of it. Second Opinion is the first in a series of books in which I share what I know about health, disease, Western medicine, and Eastern medicine. It is my hope that these books will allow you to use your

You Power to take your health and your life to a higher level and enjoy control over both in ways that you may never have imagined possible. Remember, knowing and doing does not help, being does!

• Western medicine alone did not make anyone healthy. • Eastern medicine alone did not make anyone healthy. • Patients made themselves healthy or unhealthy. • Disease did not start at the physical level. It started at a level deeper than the physical level, but manifested at the physical level. • Patients did not have any control over their care when they became ill or got admitted to the hospital. • What is best for the patient is not the interest of the collective health care system. • Patients kept coming back for treatment for the same illnesses — even when they were receiving the best available treatment. • Physicians did not heal patients ... patients healed themselves. • When patients became powerless, they lost their life.

Do we believe that our current career path is set for the rest of our life, or is it just a temporary stepping stone or stage towards something even more meaningful?

E

ach one of us has an evolving set of needs, values, or priorities in our life that we would love to satisfy, fulfill, or meet. These values are derived from what each of us perceives at any one moment to be partly or wholly missing in our lives. Whatever is highest on your list of values is what you are spontaneously inspired from within to want to fulfill most. Our highest value has been called our purpose, our chief aim, our primary cause, our “telos,” or our pathway of self-actualization and full individualization. It is what we are most committed to and what we can’t wait to get up in the morning and do and fulfill.

Altitude // Inspire There have been some individuals who have had a highly fulfilling career path for decades and then as their values evolved they veered off into a slightly or radically new direction to fulfill the next phase of their lives. There have been others who have remained dedicated to their primary cause for their entire living existence (as in the case of some Nobel Prize winners). As our highest values evolve, so too can our career paths. Our hierarchy of values dictates how we perceive, decide, and act upon the world and therefore dictates our career destiny. But our overall life’s journey can be filled with one or more destinies along the way. I have been inspired for 43 years to research, write, travel, and teach globally and will probably do this for my remaining years. But a dear friend of mine who is about a century young has had five incredibly meaningful and inspiring career paths — all of which have been fulfilling and had global impact. It is wise for each of us to identify what is truly most important and highest on our set of

achieve whatever is next. No, we must take command and identify what is truly most important to us now. Then we structure our lives in a highly prioritized manner and take specific productive actions that will increase the probability of achieving and fulfilling that goal. We may have to forge a new path to whatever this may be. It might not be an existing career. It might be some new and original service to the world. The world is evolving and we are capable of creating original ideas, products, or services that serve the world. Now is the time to ask ourselves: What do we value most? What is it that our lives demonstrate that we are truly committed to and inspired by? What is it that we spontaneously love doing each day that could serve others? What is it that has consistently inspired us, or is common to the people who have inspired us? The quality of our lives is based upon the quality of the questions we ask. The quality of our singular or multiple career paths is based upon the answers we provide.

values, and then prioritize our lives in such a way that we are able to fulfill our chosen career path. By finding out what the world needs most and where this great need overlaps our own highest value(s), we will find our special niche, or niches of service to the world. If we still have to ask whether this is the path for us, then it is not. When we have found it, we will know, because then we can’t wait to get up in the morning and do what we love most each day. If we feel there is something more in store for our life, what do we do? Nobody else is going to get up each morning and dedicate their lives to our ongoing career or life fulfillment. That job is our own. It is not about hoping, or praying, or wishing that something on the outside of us is going to miraculously help us determine and JETSETMAG.COM

How do we know if our feelings of boredom and dissatisfaction are temporary or a message to move on? No job or career has only ease without difficulties, supportive elements without challenges, or positives without negatives. All career paths contain a synthesis of both, like the two poles of any magnet. It is not our career path that is so much our concern, it is our perceptions of our career path. We have command over our perceptions and actions. It is wise for us to either go and do what we love — that is, what is most meaningful — through delegating all things not of highest priority. We also must ask ourselves: How specifically is each of my current job responsibilities helping me fulfill my newly-desired and more meaningful career path? How is it on the way and not in the way? What skills, talents, contacts, or opportunities is it providing me along my new way?

Altitude // Inspire By making the links of how what we are currently doing is helping us do what we would love to be doing, we liberate ourselves from the weighted frustration of being caught in a job that is temporarily unfulfilling. Either we are to go and do what we love, or temporarily love what we do. It is wisest to take command of our perceptions and appreciate how our current career is acting as an essential stepping stone to our newly-desired dream career.

Can unfulfillment in our current career affect our entire lives? Bitching about an unfulfilling career is pointless. Instead, take command. Remember that you have command over your perceptions, decisions, and actions. When we transform our perceptions and actions, we transform our lives and our careers. All the so-called unfulfilling symptoms we may be experiencing are the result of us not doing what we love, nor loving what we do. They are simply feedback systems to let us know that we are not yet seeing how what we are currently doing is serving us, and how we are not yet prioritizing our daily actions toward what we would love. When we are not fulfilled because of our perceptions and actions, our whole life lets us know it. All of our symptoms are attempting to guide us back to do what we would truly love. What are the first realistic steps to finding a career path we would truly love? It is important to first get clear on exactly what we would love to do. Not some fantasy or whim, but something that our lives spontaneously demonstrate is meaningful and important to us and that could also in some way serve others. Looking at what has inspired us in the recent or distant past is a great starting place. Asking ourselves: What is it that we would love to make a difference in? What products, services, or ideas do people in the world truly need that we would love to provide

and fulfill? What is it that we simply spontaneously do each day that nobody has to remind us to do that we could turn into a career path? What would I love to do each day and how could I get handsomely or beautifully paid to do it? When weighing up leaving our current career for another, what are we to do? It is wise for us to be grateful for whatever careers we have had along our way. Each career has offered us skills, contacts, knowledge, insights to ourselves, confirmation on what we love and don’t love, management insights and possibly savings along the way. Then we can start a list of what we know we would love to do and master plan our new career path until we are clear on our strategy of transition. It is usually unwise to just leap without a net, or without some viable, well thought out career or business plan, and more fulfilling to simply appreciate how what we are doing is actually helping us make this transition. There is nothing unwise about working extra hours initially while fading from one into the other. Follow a continually evolving strategic plan. If we fill our days with high priority actions that inspire us, our lives won’t keep filling up with low priority distractions that don’t. Then it is most fulfilling to finally use this appreciative energy to catalyze even more high priority actions towards fulfilling our new and more meaningful dream careers. And if you already have your dream career (or careers), be thankful for what you have achieved. For nearly forty years I have affirmed daily that I do what I love and love what I do. And I am grateful. Dr. John Demartini is the founder and CEO of the Demartini Institute, a human behavior specialist, internationally-published author, educator and consultant. Rising Star By ty fahlman

I

n a very short period of time, Margot Robbie has shot to the top of every casting director and producer’s list. Seemingly overnight, the young Australian actress has become one of the most sought-after starlets in Hollywood. It began with 2013’s The Wolf of Wall Street, where (with her thick Brooklyn accent and frequent lack of clothing) Robbie was perhaps the most memorable thing in a movie rife with memorable things. Aside from demonstrating genuine chemistry alongside Will Smith in Focus, she has been relatively quiet in the last few years (with a couple lead turns in some indie films), but with two massive blockbusters on the horizon (The Legend of Tarzan and Suicide Squad) this summer, Robbie is poised to take the next leap into outright superstardom. ISSUE 2 . 2016

85

Altitude // Cover Feature A great Margot Robbie story involves her audition for Wolf of Wall Street. As the story goes, she became very...engrossed in the middle of reading a scene with DiCaprio. “I was like, ‘you have literally 30 seconds left in this room and if you don’t do something impressive nothing will ever come of it. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance, just take it,’” she says. “And so I start screaming at him and he’s yelling back at me. And he’s really scary. I can barely keep up...so I walk up really close to his face and then I’m like, ‘Maybe I should kiss him. When else am I ever going to get a chance to kiss Leo DiCaprio, ever?’ But another part of my brain clicks and I just go: ‘Whack!’ I hit him in the face.” This was not in the script. Two significant things happened after that. One, the room (which included legendary director Martin Scorsese) went dead silent. And two, Robbie got the part. If the then-unknown Australian soap opera star needed to do something to differentiate herself from the hundreds of other girls fighting for the chance to get paid to make out with DiCaprio on set for four months, she succeeded brilliantly. That she had the gall to do something as outlandish as slap the world’s biggest movie star across the face is a testament to just how fearless Margot Robbie really is. Robbie’s success stems from that fearlessness, her talent, and her willingness to tackle roles that many actresses wouldn’t dare attempt. With her outlandish outfits and over-the-top accent, the character of DiCaprio’s second wife in Scorsese’s prurient, threehour treatise on American greed could have easily been relegated to caricature. But Robbie made Naomi believable, three-dimensional, sympathetic even. She brought truth and dimensionality to an otherwise one-note character. Something that she appears to be doing again this summer as Jane in Tarzan and Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad.

“I’m happiest when I’m surfing or out on the farm hunting wild pigs...or riding around on motorbikes.” Robbie has been surprising audiences since she was a child. She grew up on her grandparents’ farm on Australia’s idyllic Gold Coast. At a young age, she would conceptualize her own magic tricks and put on shows, defying the Magician’s Code by selling her secrets to the highest bidder. At age ten, with the money she had hustled, she bought her first surfboard. An avid surfer to this day, young Margot developed an instant kinship with the ocean and Australian wilderness. “I’m happiest when I’m surfing or out on the farm hunting wild pigs...or riding around on motorbikes,” she says, sounding like an unabashedly archetypal outdoorsy Aussie. But next to that infamous slap, the second most pivotal moment in Robbie’s career doesn’t involve the outdoors. It involves sandwiches. Yes, sandwiches. You see, another great Margot Robbie story dates back to when she was a teenager working as a “sandwich artist” at Subway in Melbourne. Robbie had been crafting footlongs to pay the bills while trying to make it as an actor. Then one day, she landed a role on Neighbours, one of the most successful soap operas in Australia (she got the part by cold calling the producers — again, chutzpah). Her manager was in disbelief. Telling your Subway manager you quit because you’re going to be on television is tantamount to telling everyone you’re quitting your job at Target to become an astronaut. It might elicit some incredulity. “I remember the day I had to go in and say I’m going to have to quit because I’ve got a job on Neighbours,” she says. “They were like, ‘Piss off!’ because I hadn’t told them anything about it.” But Robbie would get the last laugh six months later when Subway hired her back...to film a commercial.

For her work in the commercial, she says she got paid “like twenty times” more than she ever earned as a sandwich artist. And from then on it seemed she had found her calling. Robbie soon became a fan favorite on Neighbours. Her breathtaking beauty was impossible to ignore, but so was something else — that spirit, that ineffable quality that makes Margot Robbie so captivating to watch. When she wasn’t on set, she was taking acting lessons and working with a dialect coach on mastering an American accent. In 2011, after three years on the show, Robbie moved to Hollywood where she joined an amateur hockey league and quickly landed the lead on the short-lived ABC show Pan Am. After the show was cancelled, Robbie received the script for Wolf of Wall Street. And the rest, is history. Fast forward to the Summer of Margot and the two films that could change her career. Directed by frequent Harry Potter helmer David Yates, The Legend of Tarzan is a modern retelling of one of our oldest cinematic tales. In the film Margot plays the titular King of the Jungle’s love interest Jane, previously famous primarily for being both perpetually helpless and one of the few words Tarzan regularly speaks. But Margot’s take on the character is far from a damsel in distress. “I don’t do damsels,” she says proudly. Her Jane is a strong, intelligent fearless woman who can hold her own. (And carrying on her tradition of spontaneously striking her male co-stars, in the middle of a sex scene with Alexander Skarsgard, Robbie decided to punch the actor who plays Tarzan hard enough to leave a bruise.) As for her other summer blockbuster, the last two brilliant trailers for super-antihero film Suicide Squad (out August 5th) indicate that Robbie’s performance as Harley Quinn might just be the type of scene-stealing, genre-transcending performance that leaves audiences talking long after the credits roll. Without trying to sound too hyperbolic, I can’t help but admit that what I’ve seen reminds me of what Heath Ledger did with the Joker — a fresh, spellbinding take on a DC Comics’ villain that owns every scene they

are in. (The fact that there is another actor, Jared Leto, doing his own bold take on the Joker character in the same film, somewhat complicates the analogy.) That Robbie is willing and able to portray such a psychotic character with such truth and gusto is a testament to her range and intrepidity as an actress. “Harley is creepy, violent, crazy — all of the things that I aspire to be!” she jokes. “No. It’s the fun of living vicariously through someone who is doing things that I would never do in real life.” By all indications, Robbie is clearly having fun in the film. And also, it would seem, in real life.

Jordin Sparks’ Mission to Inspire Teens to Improve Their World By Lou Raiola

90

T

hroughout its 15 seasons on the air, millions of Americans sat glued to their TV screens watching with suspense the emotional moment when American Idol host Ryan Seacrest declared, “The next American Idol is….” That moment dramatically changed the lives of Carrie Underwood, David Cook, and Kelly Clarkson, just to name a few. And while all of those incredible talents experienced commercial success, it is Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks who rises to the top of this elite group when it comes to inspiring social impact for good and changing the lives of others.

vast acclaim with multiple awards and millions of copies sold, Sparks expanded her career to include Broadway, film, and even a fragrance line. Like so many, I was drawn to Sparks through her music. But today I am an even bigger fan of the impact she has had on our communities. My attention and respect has been thoroughly captured by her work in hospitals and struggling neighborhoods. It is evident that Sparks has unquestionably become a powerhouse in inspiring change for good. “Inspiring positive social change is near and dear to my heart,” says Sparks. “My parents always instilled that in me when I was younger. They were always helping, always giving back, always trying to figure out how to make some difference.” Over the years, Sparks has supported dozens of non-profits and fielded countless charitable requests — including frequent appearances at Muhammad Ali Celebrity Fight Night and various Special Olympics events.

Sparks was just 17 as she stood next to Seacrest and became the youngest Idol winner in history. But the moment would have never been without the acclaimed show’s Idol Gives Back special, which took place over two episodes and raised more than $30 million dollars for charity. Few know that because of the philanthropic nature of the event, the April 25th show was altered as producers decided not to eliminate anyone that night, opting instead to send two participants packing the following week. The contestant who was supposed to be eliminated on April 25? Jordin Sparks. The rest, of course, is history as Sparks moved on to survive, win, and have an exceptional music career. It is quite fortuitous that a charity event “saved” Jordin Sparks, as she has become a passionate and authentic activist in saving the lives of others around the world. Following Idol, her debut album sold more than two million copies. The album’s lead single, “No Air,” sold more than three million digital copies in the US alone and earned Sparks a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. After her second album received

Altitude // Charity Jordin’s M.A.D. projects include: I’m M.A.D. Are You? A campaign that cultivates community advocacy and volunteerism among teens and young adults. The campaign encourages young adults to find an issue they’re passionate about, maybe even a little “M.A.D.” about, and then funnel their energy into changing it.

Spark Something An inspiring campaign designed to mentor small groups of women for a three-month period in three segments: Inspire, Ignite, and Impact. Upon completion, the participants receive a grant to help implement their idea or business. The final element of the Spark Something campaign is to become a local leader as part of the M.A.D. Girls Ambassador Club.

Furthermore, every year Jordin uses Super Bowl week to bring awareness to the various M.A.D. projects while supporting various non-profits. This past Super Bowl, Jordin joined her father (legendary New York Giant Philippi Sparks) at the NFL Women’s Summit, where leaders across industries united to honor the lifelong impact sports have had on their lives, and discuss how to support the continued advancement of women through sport. The M.A.D. team also hosted a Teddy Bear Picnic, delivering teddy bears to George Mark Children’s House in San Leandro California, which provides

Eventually Jordin and the altruistic Sparks family (mother Jodi, brother PJ, and family friend Nichet Smith) launched a foundation, M.A.D. (Make A Difference) Girls. The mission of M.A.D. is simple: inspire millennials to make a difference in this world. And who better than Sparks, a millennial herself, to lead this generation. “I’m privileged to have had an amazing platform over the last decade to help inspire others to give back, she says. “It’s incredible to see people’s faces light up, whether young kids, teens, my peers or older generations. support and medical care for children with serious illnesses. To date, M.A.D. Girls has distributed more than 1,800 teddy bears to welldeserving kids. I have witnessed the work of Sparks and her family and it is, indeed, authentic. No, this is not a mere publicity stunt; there is genuine conviction and dedication in the work that Jordin and her family do. And luckily, that work has not gone unnoticed. Recent recognition was given at the CNN Heroes annual event, which paid tribute to Jordin, naming her a Young Hollywood Gives Back Hero. Additionally, Variety and Women’s Wear Daily each recognized Jordin as a Woman of Empowerment. “We’ve found that even the smallest changes made by thousands of people over time truly make a tremendous difference,” Sparks says. “I remember seeing a quote by Audrey Hepburn that said, ‘We have two hands. One to help ourselves and one to help others.’ That was really poignant to me. As long as you are doing this, you can change the world around you, which leads to a multiplier effect of changing other people’s worlds. The results are change on a global scale.” With her relentless energy and persistent drive, something tells me we’ll be hearing much more about the global change brought on by this bright and talented young woman for years to come.

hile homes are a special place for family and friends, truly remarkable homes are an expression of our unique nature. The luxury of our home may speak to our achievements in life, but there is so much more that makes us who we are. Our home is part of our legacy and a testament to our quintessential self, our unique spirit, our individual expression, and our contribution to the world. An award-winning Murray Arnott home is not just about walls and a roof; it is about a philosophical attitude — an attitude that taps into your genius, your spirit, your passion. An American Original BY GINA KOLBE

Soul of Yosemite

I 104

n today’s dynamic art scene, the word “great” is tossed around all too frequently. So it is refreshing to see the works of an accomplished artist who actually deserves the adjective. Timothy Wolcott, the landscape photographer whose large format works reside in the Guggenheim, Smithsonian, and Microsoft’s corporate collection, is a favorite of presidents, sports figures, environmentalists, and Jetset-reading collectors. JETSETMAG.COM

Mr. Wolcott modestly admits to possessing an uncanny ability to turn nature’s majesty and fleeting moments into powerful images. About the resulting slow burn and emotional reaction to nature’s iconic material, he says, “I am simply the vehicle through which landscape is edited and survives.” Granted, there have been landscape photographers before him — Ansel Adams being, perhaps, the best loved and someone who Tim Wolcott reveres and learned from. But it takes a particularly strong commitment to one’s art to walk the land for weeks at a time or face an oncoming cyclonic storm in order visualize and then capture the final frame.

Angel’s Heart

Colored by the seasons, transformed by the winds, landscapes can be as ephemeral as the clouds in Soul of Yosemite and as delicate as the wild Dogwood petals in Spring of Enchantment. Quixotic and changing, they are extremely difficult to reproduce in a way that resonates with authenticity. Unlike in studio photography (where the variables of light, shadows, and wind are controlled to within a fraction of their being), when nature is the studio, the photographer’s control is limited to his mastery of the equipment. Wolcott is a master of the Phase One system which implements the Schneider Kreuznach leaf shutter lens, and where technique and timing are critical to the success of the moment. The technique necessitates a simian-like faculty tottering atop ladders and rock ledges (which is the only way to gain perspective for a work like “A Day in Aspen” that encompasses river, foothills and snowcapped peaks). Wolcott also has a proclivity for crouching under what is literally the weight of the world, as he did for “Angel Heart”, an avant-garde take on a Painted Desert landmark.

Parthenon

106

JETSETMAG.COM

Perhaps the complicated technique and prowess necessary to tame nature onto a 50” by 60” format is one reason many photographers turn to digital enhancements. After all, even shooting rapid-fire sequences with automatic settings doesn’t guarantee the depth of field that is the hallmark of a Wolcott print. But Wolcott disdains that approach. The images that appear on a Wolcott canvas (specially treated paper designed for optimal saturation by environmentally friendly pigment) are virgin. Whether it’s the overwhelming Parthenon iceberg that survived for eons as if waiting to be captured by Tim Wolcott’s camera before shattering into a million melting pieces, or Nature’s Garden, a still that captures the motion of falling water, each photograph is devoid of digital manipulation. Don’t get me wrong, Tim Wolcott doesn’t eschew technology. In fact he is something of a technological genius, a trait that may have been passed down in his DNA from Alexander Wolcott, the relative who in 1839 invented the first camera utilizing the daguerreian process. Tim’s innovations include both an environmentally-

Buyer’s Guide // Art friendly pigment process and a coating substance that negates the

need for glass. Together, the processes assure the primacy of color, deflecting fading for an estimated two-hundred-fifty years, and an unprecedented visual intimacy with the image itself. For his innovative and beautiful work, Wolcott has received many accolades. He has twice been named the Smithsonian Institution’s “World’s Best Landscaper Photographer.” When asked about his most challenging work, Wolcott is quick to cite the Parthenon. A study in blue and white of a massive, calved iceberg adrift in the Antarctic wilderness of Pleneau Bay, the Parthenon is an absolutely-stunning image. Against the rocking of a small rubber Zodiac, Mr. Wolcott balanced his Phase One and set his F-stops manually, as usual. The result is a nothing short of breathtaking. At the magazine’s request, Mr. Wolcott has selected a portfolio of twelve previously un-released images from his private collection to be offered exclusively to Jetset readers. Each will be printed in a limited edition of fifteen. Several of the photographs have

garnered awards. “These are the best of my abilities,” he explained. The selection includes previously un-released images from the Antarctic journey. Many of Tim’s photographic experiences are documented in his book Along the Water’s Edge, a collection of over 77 powerful images. In 2010, to commemorate the 175th anniversary of Texas’ independence, Wolcott was commissioned to photograph a series of images for the book entitled For the Love of Texas. With an introduction by President George H. W. Bush and a forward by thengovernor Rick Perry, the book is a testament to the spirit and beauty of Texas. The book is available at wolcottgallery.com.

magine your ultimate luxury vacation. What elements have to combine to create a truly blissful and carefree experience? Well for one, the locale must be stunning, a place so beautiful and exotic that it makes you forget your primary city of residence, regardless of its beauty. The accommodations must be grand and sumptuous, with exquisite refinements down to the very last minute detail. There also must be enough freedom and privacy so that you can truly enjoy yourself, your loved ones, and the location in which you are visiting. The breathtaking palatial villa that is Casa Dare to Dream checks all of those boxes and then some. Situated near the top of a mountain in the exclusive, gated Costa Rican community of Playa Hermosa, this luxury retreat is one of the most stunning, secluded, and tranquil properties that we at Jetset have ever laid eyes upon. As featured on HGTV’s hit program House Hunters International, this estate allows jetsetters the opportunity to rent a slice of tropical paradise for week or two of blissful escape.

140

JETSETMAG.COM

The main villa of this opulent estate boasts over 6,500 square feet of pure luxury. Each of its four sumptuous bedrooms features sweeping panoramic views of Playa Hermosa’s nearby beach and tropical canopy. There’s also a great room with a state-of-the-art home theater, a luxurious kitchen, full gym, 30-foot salt mineral infinity pool, and a separate guest apartment with a kitchen. And if you desire, concierge, private chef, chauffeur, and maid services are just a phone call away. Like having your own Costa Rican villa (minus all the inherent costs of ownership and maintenance), Casa Dare to Dream offers the type of private vacation experience that no international resort or hotel can contend with. It makes the perfect location for your next family vacation, corporate retreat, or special celebration. A Car Collectors Utopia By ty fahlman

E

very year thousands of ardent auto enthusiasts flock to Scottsdale, Arizona for the largest car collector show on the earth. For decades the name Barrett-Jackson has held a special place in the hearts of car collectors and gearheads across the globe. Its many auctions in the US (Palm Beach, Las Vegas, Tahoe‌) are legendary, but when it comes to the most massive collection of collectable automobiles up for bid, it is the flagship event in Scottsdale that is the granddaddy of them all.

1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

As always, Jetset had an impressive display at the event, with some unbelievable vehicles on display, including the stunning new McLaren 650S, Dodge Viper SRT, and the absolutely one-of-a-kind Ronn Motor Company Scorpion. Jetset partner TAG Global Systems had their revolutionary TAG Tecslate available, dazzling all those who interacted with it; and VRX Advanced Simulators provided a breathtaking driving simulation that had people lining up to give it a virtual spin. Some other very special partners (including Bondurant, Norvision, and Dillion Optics) also helped make the Jetset display the hottest place to hang out during the week. The legendary DJ Twist spun a vast array of music from electronic to contemporary to classic rock, and helped keep the atmosphere lively and the party going. Meanwhile, almost every guy at Barrett was dying to take selfies with the Jetset Flight Crew girls mingling at the Jetset display. This year saw 1,469 vehicles sell for over $102 million. If you are a wealthy car collector, it is hard to imagine you couldn’t find something that appealed to your tastes. The most money any car fetched was a record $1.76 million for a Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach. But that wasn’t even the largest sale of the event, as that distinction goes to a lot of three vintage “Serial One” Corvettes from 1955-1957 that sold for $1,815,000 and had the audience gasping in astonishment. But the most publicized sale of the week had to have been that of the legendary 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am from Smokey and the

Bandit. In a lively and entertaining auction, Burt Reynolds himself made an appearance on stage and fired up the crowd. Eventually the piece of entertainment history netted $550,000, an obvious record for a Trans Am. Many other legendary pieces of movie memorabilia were on display at the event, including one of the cars driven in the original Fast and Furious movie and the seminal semi rig known as Optimus Prime from Transformers. There was also a 1952 Chevrolet 3800 pickup which had the very cool distinction of being the last car ever driven by “King of Cool” Steve McQueen. Additionally, over 1,400 automobilia pieces sold for a total of nearly $3 million, including the 1950s Donald Duck neon porcelain parking lot entrance sign from Disneyland, which brought in $60,840. As with every Barrett-Jackson, there were countless celebrities walking around, soaking in all the automotive fun, including racing legend Jeff Gordon, car collector extraordinaire Jay Leno, and friend of Jetset and Transformers director, Michael Bay. Guys from the hit Discovery Channel show Fast and Loud were good sports and manned the bar on Friday and served drinks to patrons. But perhaps the greatest non-automotive moment of the week was when Zac Brown Band (also friends of Jetset) blew everyone away with a stirring, surprise acoustic set. It was one of many highlights from the greatest week of the year for a car collector.
