TENSES OUTLINE

1ST YEAR BAC

PAST PERFECT Past action that ocurred befote another action or before a stated past time. Complete past action with visible results in the past Unfulfilled intentions

PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS Action continuing over a period up to a specific time in the past Past action of certain duration which had visible results in the past.

HAD+ PARTICIPLE Ex: He had left by the time I got there. Ex: She was sad because she had failed the test Ex: He had hoped to reach the summit but his partner fell ill.

HAD + BEEN + -ING Ex: She had been working as a manager for 10 years before she resigned. Ex: They were wet because they had been walking in the rain.

FUTURE SIMPLE WILL/SHALL (Br. E.) + BARE INFINITIVE Predicitions

Ex: One day people will travel to Mars

Offers Invitations Promises Suggestions (shall)

Ex: I’ll do the washing-up Ex: Will you come to lunch? Ex:I’ll pay you back tomorrow. Ex: Shall we all go out together? Ex: I’ll make some tea

FUTURE PERFECT

WILL +HAVE+ PARTICIPLE

Action in progress at a stated future time Actions which are th ereuklt of a routine (instead of Present Cont.) When we ask politely about people’s arrangements to see if they can do sth for us or because we want to offer to do sth for them

Ex: He will be sunbathing in Hawaii this time next week.. Ex: I’ll be seeing John tomorrow ( We work in the same office so we’ll definitely meet) Ex: Will you be going to the supermarket ? Can you buy me some tea?


FUTURE CONTINUOUS WILL+ BE + -ING Actions which will be finished before a stated future time By or not……until/till are used with Future Perfect. Until/till are used with Future Perfect in negative sentences.

Ex: She will have come back by the end of June. Ex: She will have finished by 8. but …..She won’t have finished until 8.

FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS WILL+HAVE+ BE+ -ING DURATION OF AN ACTION UP TO A CERTAIN TIME IN THE FUTURE.

Ex: By the end of this year she will have been working here for two years.
