new zealand hunting current market: -farming background -male orientated -traditional NZ -functional

types of hunting: -deer -wild pig (boar) -possum -goat -duck decided to do hunting because of a gap in the market for hunting gear that is appealing to an urban and modern market people who live in the city and hunt recreationally

existing hunting brands -swazi: big competition outdoor performance clothing. focusses more on the farming/agricultural/rural market

-ridgeline: say their garments can be worn farming, hunting and wont look out of place at your local bar

-huntech: durable, high quality, totally functional clothing & equipment, in particular for hunters, shooters & fishermen & make their own camouflage

Camouflage : Existing

Military Traditional

using images abstracted to make modern camo

Pixelated

Camo in an urban setting

looking at what is already on the market we decided to design our own camouflage. something that can be relevant in the bush while hunting & also look good in an urban environment. Using Optifade theory of pixelating & breaking up the body with a large & smaller pattern. we will develop new camo to suit our specific markets needs & wants.

“Real Tree” camouflage technology

“Optifade” technology

Camouflage inspiration maps -streets and roads -topographical -fits in with the ‘urban’ aspect pixels -developing the Optifade theory but focussing on being modern and stylish

Camouflage Development

took a section out of one of the old map pictures tried mirroring it but kept looking like things as in animals, faces etc. topographical map will work better as a repeat the grid acted like a guideline to come up with the pixel pattern. There are various colours that are from the colour palette, too many colours means the topographical pattern gets lost

Our Camouflage

final. two layered screen print & colourway of jacket

Optifade technology theory is that macro & micro patterns need to be in place to break up the body so you can blend in with any surroundings. macro pattern is the pixels and micro is the topographical map

shorts -dry seat -fly front -shaped back panel

-short raglan sleeve -side seam to front

-yoke shoulders -side body & underarm gusset --wide hem band

development

these were my final outfits for the mid term presentations will take the best aspects of these and develop from there

silhouette: big on top, slim lower half removable parts darker colour palette bellows pockets panels articulation big hoods

this is basically the outfit i will be making so collection has to fit in with this

toile development GUN METAL top first toile

-gusset works well & means good armlift and keeps w macpac styling -need to shape hem more -body is a bit baggy

final

-made curve of cuff and hem more extreme so it was noticeable -took in the body slightly -changed sleeve panels to raglan style

IMPACT jacket first toile

-this was when i figured out the length my final jacket would be -the fit seems all fine -back pleat needs to be sewn together to stay in place

-darts in elbows could be a bit wider for more articulation -panel lines & armhole all go to one point, bad for bulky fabric so change this

second & third toile

-fits well overall but will add a cm each side of CF -collar has to be sorted out

-pocket placement is good -flap of bellows pocket is too small but actual pocket is good proportion -moved yoke and sleeve panels up so seams aren’t meeting all at the same point

my collection was inspired by the gap in the market for hunting wear that also worked in an urban environment. the person i wanted to target is male, lives and works in the city and is fashion conscious the trends i drew from were biker styling (articulation and quilting/reinforcement), big hoods, mod parka styling (fishtail hem, bellows pockets) and the silhouette was modern (oversized on top and slim on the bottom half) specially designed camouflage was designed for this collection using the Optifade theory of macro and micro patterns which was adapted to a modern look (pixels and topographical pattern) colours were kept natural and dark (greens, browns, greys, blacks) with blue being used in the camouflage print i believe this collection is the future for macpac and the future for a new generation of hunters
