McCormick Corporate Partnership with NAAC

T

he UK and Ireland distributor of McCormick – AgriArgo UK – aims to support the activities of Britain’s agricultural contractors by joining their representative organisation as a corporate partner. Ray Spinks, General Manager and Sales Director at AgriArgo, says the National Association of Agricultural Contractors (NAAC) is widely recognised as doing a good job for professional operators providing services in agriculture and other landbased sectors. “Apart from generally promoting the advantages of using contractors and supporting them with advice and information, the NAAC does a lot of behind-thescenes work, representing the interests of contractors at the highest level,” he points out. “The NAAC contributes contractor perspectives in

consultations by government and regulating authorities, has created good working practice standards to reinforce professionalism and provides valuable guidance on many aspects of business management. “Individual contractors have just one voice; but as members of the NAAC, they have a much stronger collective voice to express their views and interests.” AgriArgo will make its corporate member debut at the NAAC’s Contractor 2017 event, the only national gathering organised specifically for professional land-based contractors, being held on December 14 at the East of England Showground, Peterborough. “The programme should attract everyone with an interest in providing contract services,” suggests Ray Spinks. “With speakers such as the NFU president, a food chain expert and the national

adviser with the agricultural valuers’ association, the event should provide some useful insights into the future role of contractors, especially in a post-Brexit British agriculture.” AgriArgo aims to forge closer links with contractors through its NAAC partnership and contribute its views and information on issues such as farm vehicle roadworthiness, operator training standards, and the machinery supply chain. “We already have an interest in the contracting sector through operators who run our McCormick X7 and other models,” Mr Spinks emphasises. “But with the imminent introduction of the 300hp+ McCormick X8 Series, which takes the range to new levels of power and performance, we’re confident of supplying more contractors in future.”

John Deere Innovations on Show at AgriSc John Deere is exhibiting two new 5R and 6R Series tractors and a brand new Gator utility vehicle for the first time at AgriScot 2017 (stand no. 187 in the Lowland Hall) alongside the latest developments in farm connectivity, with the focus on dedicated apps for farmers, contractors, fleet managers and operators. Introduced for 2017, the compact 5R Series tractors from 90 to 125hp feature a onepiece curved frame design with a low centre of gravity and a turning radius of only 3.75m, even when fitted with a front loader such as the new 543R. Features include front axle suspension and an air suspended seat in the newly designed cab, plus an optional cab suspension system. The range’s Stage IIIB 4.5-litre John Deere PWX diesel-only four-cylinder engine produces 10 extra hp for transport applications. Three transmission options include the new 32/16 Command8, with eight powershiftable gears and an ECO mode enabling a top speed of 40kph at only 1759 engine rpm, plus automatic shifting as standard.

With a shipping weight of only 4.3 tonnes, the new 5R Series tractors can lift as much as 4.7 or optionally 5.3 tonnes. For front loader operation, there is a choice of mechanical or new E joysticks, both linked to the tractor seat. In addition, the new 543R front loader offers automatic mast and implement latch, a 10 per cent increase in lift capacity, higher breakout force and an increased roll-back angle. John Deere’s new 6250R tractor, featuring the award-winning CommandPRO joystick and an AutoPowr transmission, develops up to 300hp with Intelligent Power Management. It is fitted as standard with JDLink telematics, including remote display access (RDA) and wireless data transfer (WDT) linked to the MyJohnDeere.com website portal. CommandPRO’s functionality allows the tractor to be controlled from top speed to zero with a simple push or pull of the joystick. Both this and the conventional tractor pedals can be operated at the same time, and there is no need for an external ISOBUS joystick as the driver can also operate the tractor and ISOBUS functions simultaneously.

cot With a very light vehicle weight of 9.3 tonnes, the 6250R delivers more power than any other tractor in this weight class, along with an unrivalled power density of 31kg/hp. The high maximum permissible weight of 15 tonnes also allows a 5.7 tonne payload, which means the tractor is able to transport heavier loads. The newly styled Gator XUV 865M utility vehicle features the company’s quietest ever cab, more room for both driver and passengers and an extremely efficient heating system, including a windscreen defrost feature. Equipped with an 854cc, 23hp diesel engine, CVT transmission and power steering plus a top speed of 50kph, the XUV 865M offers a tight turning circle and optimal weight distribution for superior off-road performance. For extra versatility, it can be fitted with a wide range of over 90 attachments from snow blades to winches, and has a large 42-litre fuel tank to keep the vehicle running longer between fill-ups. The adjustable driver’s seat can accommodate three people, for off-road use only. The versatile and durable cargo box has a load capacity of 454kg, while towing capacity has been increased by a third to 907kg and total payload capacity is 680kg. The company’s latest work management apps make it very easy to keep track of machinery, get advice on seed and fertiliser rates or spray requirements and monitor

machine productivity by working together with, and being connected to, the dealer, farm adviser and other suppliers. For example, the new MyJobConnect service includes a MyJobsManager app for farm or fleet managers and contractors, and a MyJobs app for operators. There is also an additional app in the MyJobConnect Premium service called MyLogistics, which is an intelligent ag navigation app. Services can be accessed in two ways, either from the office computer or on-thego using dedicated apps for tablets and smartphones, which allow drivers to view and carry out tasks in real time from their mobile devices. This latest John Deere connectivity package frees up time for farmers and contractors to focus on their core business, and makes the complete work process including job planning, work orders, data recording, customer invoicing and reporting much easier, faster and more efficient.

DEUTZ invests in digital strategy and launches new online service portal including parts shop

D

EUTZ service portal brings the DEUTZ aftersales network online

Only online shop for all genuine DEUTZ spare parts Accurate parts identification through direct access to DEUTZ engine documentation DEUTZ and its network of dealers have launched a service portal for workshops, end customers and machine operators. Customers can now access all of the available information about the DEUTZ aftersales offering and can order genuine DEUTZ spare parts from their local service partners 24/7. Prior to the launch, the portal underwent a successful test phase involving a pilot partner. There is an extensive range of spare parts for DEUTZ engines

available on the internet, but it is often difficult to find the right one. Only the DEUTZ service portal can accurately identify all suitable spare parts. The portal's ability to access the documentation for more than 1.5 million DEUTZ engines, and therefore to be the most up to date with regards to technical developments, is a decisive benefit. It can display a list of spare parts to match each engine number, for example. The service portal combines the benefits of the World Wide Web – unlimited availability round the clock – with the strengths offered by an expert local aftersales service. The provision of aftersales support and parts delivery will remain in the hands of the customer's local DEUTZ partner. This allows delivery times to be minimised and the most efficient support to be provided. A major plus for business customers is the ability for customised price agreements to be displayed in the online

10 | Working Farmer | www.workingfarmer.co.uk

shop, while delivery times are displayed in real time based on the availability in the DEUTZ aftersales network. But, as the name suggests, the service portal is more than just a web shop – it also offers customers a wide range of functions and content relating to all aspects of DEUTZ engines. Users can access information on spare parts, engine documentation and product information via a central login. As Michael Wellenzohn, member of the Board of Management of DEUTZ AG for Sales/Service & Marketing, explains: "The service portal continues our growth strategy in the areas of aftersales service and digitalisation. Our end customers now have a state-ofthe-art, innovative online platform that makes it easier and faster to access the DEUTZ aftersales service." The portal is being launched in several stages around the world. Starting in Europe, the regional DEUTZ service partners will be connected to the system one by one. To coincide with the launch, customers can benefit from attractive introductory offers at participating service partners.

Animal Housing

Housing Cattle

H

ousingWhether cows are housed in cubicles, straw yards or cow sheds, in order to maximise performance and to ensure satisfactory standards of welfare, the accommodation must at least provide for the animal’s most basic needs. As an absolute minimum, the housing must provide a comfortable, clean, well-drained and dry lying area together with shelter from adverse weather, space to allow the animal to move, lie down and rise freely as well as access to adequate food and water. All housing for cattle should include an adequate provision of calving pens and sick pens for isolation of sick or injured animals. All cattle farms should also have provision for isolation and quarantine of bought-in animals in a separate building, unless the herd is genuinely closed and never buys in replacement or breeding animals. If the housing system does not provide for these basic needs, then not only will both production and welfare be compromised, but it is likely that you are also failing to comply with the welfare codes and the law relating to animal welfare in your area.

Cubicles CubiclesCubicle management should be similarly well planned, as uncomfortable or unsuitable cubicles can lead to poor occupancy, wet and soiled cubicle beds, increased risk of udder disease and lameness as well as physical damage to the cows. Appropriate cubicle length will accommodate the need for both forward lunging space and rear clearance to ensure the animal doesn’t soil the bedding. Equally important, the cubicle should be wide enough for the cow to lie down without rubbing against the partitions, but narrow enough to prevent them turning around. The required dimensions of a cubicle are dependent on the size of the cow, however DairyCo have created a useful guide to calculating the right sized cubicle for your system. To compliment a good cubicle set up, a suitable depth and choice of bedding will ensure comfort when lying down as well as preventing knee and hock injuries. When choosing bedding, consider: Thermal insulation properties Softness, Traction, The use of lime under fresh bedding, not on top of it, Low risk of abrasion, Easily maintained, Cost effective Cubicle bases other than concrete should also be considered. Sand (must be washed) and limestone, in particular, have advantages over concrete-based beds with regard to cow comfort, but require careful maintenance.

14 | Working Farmer | www.workingfarmer.co.uk

Loose Housing Appropriate design of yards, avoiding dampness and contamination from water troughs and narrow entry points, is equally important. Separate housing of first calving heifers should be considered (see also Herd Health for more on disease risks associated with housing) The lying area must be under cover and bedded. The additional area may be inside or outside and does not have to be bedded.

Loafing Areas A loafing area is a space cows can use for behaviours other than feeding or lying- such as displaying oestrus behaviour and social bonding. Cattle can spend a lot of time utilising outdoor loafing areas, often using the area to regulate body temperature when humidity and temperature are high. It is advised that the loafing area size is 120% of the cubicle lying area. Loafing areas can include nonfeed passageways and non-lying areas. Although loafing is provided at pasture, the weather limits utilisation of such areas and thus an indoor loafing area with access to an outdoor loafing area is desirable. As with housing, the amount of slurry in the loafing areas should be managed, and scraped at least twice daily to prevent health problems and encourage use.

Cow Comfort A comfortable cow is a happy cow, and a happy healthy cow in turn, proves to be a profitable cow. Grooming aids are a great addition to any farm, and are often used extensively by cattle once installed. Grooming is a natural social activity for cows, and brushes have proven to positively contribute to the welfare of housed animals. Working Farmer | www.workingfarmer.co.uk | 15

Cows have 'remarkable' ability to fight HIV and could hold clue to vaccine, say scientists The findings are 'a significant step forward', says the US National Institutes of Health Cows have a "remarkable" ability to fight HIV, according to a new study that researchers say could help develop a vaccine for humans. The animals' powerful immune systems rapidly produce special antibodies that neutralise the virus, scientists found. Only 10 to 20 per cent of humans with HIV naturally develop the "broadly neutralising antibodies" (bNAbs) and those who do, only begin generating them about two years after infection, by which time the virus has

mutated. How HIV became a matter of international security People with HIV living 10 years longer due to medical advances 400 NHS patients offered HIV test after doctor diagnosed with virus But researchers found that cattle injected with HIV proteins developed the immune response within weeks. All four calves tested developed bNAbs as quickly as 35 to 50 days. it is the first time

immunisation has reliably triggered the production of HIV-fighting antibodies in humans or animals. The US National Institutes of Health said the findings were "a significant step forward". Director Anthony Fauc said: “From the early days of the epidemic, we have recognised that HIV is very good at evading immunity, so exceptional immune systems that naturally produce broadly neutralising antibodies to HIV are of great interest - whether they belong to humans or cattle."

Six Ways Drones Are Revolutionizing Agriculture Drones aren’t new technology by any means. Now, however, thanks to robust investments and a somewhat more relaxed regulatory environment, it appears their time has arrived—especially in agriculture.

U

nmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)—better known as drones—have been used commercially since the early 1980s. Today, however, practical applications for drones are expanding faster than ever in a variety of industries, thanks to robust investments and the relaxing of some regulations governing their use. Responding to the rapidly evolving technology, companies are creating new business and operating models for UAVs. The total addressable value of drone-powered solutions in all applicable industries is significant—more than $127 billion, according to a recent PwC analysis. Among the most promising areas is agriculture, where drones offer the potential for addressing several major challenges. With the world’s population projected to reach 9 billion people by 2050, experts expect agricultural consumption to increase by nearly 70 percent over the same time period. In addition,

extreme weather events are on the rise, creating additional obstacles to productivity. Agricultural producers must embrace revolutionary strategies for producing food, increasing productivity, and making sustainability a priority. Drones are part of the solution, along with closer collaboration between governments, technology leaders, and industry. Six Options for Agricultural Drones Drone technology will give the agriculture industry a high-technology makeover, with planning and strategy based on real-time data gathering and processing. PwC estimates the market for drone-powered solutions in agriculture at $32.4 billion. Following are six ways aerial and ground-based drones will be used throughout the crop cycle: 1. Soil and field analysis: Drones can be instrumental at the start of the crop cycle. They produce precise 3-D maps for early soil analysis, useful in planning seed

20 | Working Farmer | www.workingfarmer.co.uk

planting patterns. After planting, drone-driven soil analysis provides data for irrigation and nitrogen-level management. 2. Planting: Startups have created drone-planting systems that achieve an uptake rate of 75 percent and decrease planting costs by 85 percent. These systems shoot pods with seeds and plant nutrients into the soil, providing the plant all the nutrients necessary to sustain life. 3. Crop spraying: Distancemeasuring equipment— ultrasonic echoing and lasers such as those used in the light-detection and ranging, or LiDAR, method—enables a drone to adjust altitude as the topography and geography vary, and thus avoid collisions. Consequently, drones can scan the ground and spray the correct amount of liquid, modulating distance from the ground and spraying in real time for even coverage. The result: increased efficiency with a reduction of in the amount of

chemicals penetrating into groundwater. In fact, experts estimate that aerial spraying can be completed up to five times faster with drones than with traditional machinery. 4. Crop monitoring: Vast fields and low efficiency in crop monitoring together create farming’s largest obstacle. Monitoring challenges are exacerbated by increasingly unpredictable weather conditions, which drive risk and field maintenance costs. Previously, satellite imagery offered the most advanced form of monitoring. But there were drawbacks. Images had to be ordered in advance, could be taken only once a day, and were imprecise. Further, services were extremely costly and the images’ quality typically suffered on certain days. Today, time-series animations can show the precise development of a crop and reveal production inefficiencies, enabling better crop management. 5. Irrigation: Drones with hyperspectral, multispectral,

or thermal sensors can identify which parts of a field are dry or need improvements. Additionally, once the crop is growing, drones allow the calculation of the vegetation index, which describes the relative density and health of the crop, and show the heat signature, the amount of energy or heat the crop emits. 6. Health assessment: It’s essential to assess crop health and spot bacterial or fungal infections on trees. By scanning a crop using both visible and near-infrared light, drone-carried devices can identify which plants reflect different amounts of green light and NIR light. This information can produce multispectral images that track changes in plants and indicate their health. A speedy response can save an entire orchard. In addition, as soon as a sickness is discovered, farmers can apply and monitor remedies more precisely. These two possibilities increase a plant’s ability to overcome disease. And in the case of

crop failure, the farmer will be able to document losses more efficiently for insurance claims. What’s Next? Looking further into the future, UAVs might involve fleets, or swarms, of autonomous drones that could tackle agricultural monitoring tasks collectively, as well as hybrid aerialground drone actors that could collect data and perform a variety of other tasks. So, what’s slowing the progress of drones in agriculture? Beyond the barriers to widespread drone adoption in all industries— safety of drone operations, privacy issues, and insurancecoverage questions—the biggest agricultural concern is the type and quality of data that can be captured. To address this, the industry will push for more sophisticated sensors and cameras, as well as look to develop drones that require minimal training and are highly automated.

NEW HOLLAND BACKS BRITISH FOOD AND FARMING AT THE LORD MAYOR’S SHOW

N

ew Holland is proud to support The Worshipful Company of Farmers alongside the NFU at the 802nd Lord Mayor’s Show in the City of London on 11th November. Both New Holland and the NFU will highlight the vital role the British agricultural industry plays in the food industry, and celebrate the £109bn annual revenue the sector contributes to the UK’s economy. Each year most of the 110 Livery Companies of the City parade through the streets of the square mile to welcome a new Lord

Mayor of London. This year’s entry by the Worshipful Company of Farmers, led by the company’s Master Julian Sayers, will centre on a New Holland T7.225 tractor, one of New Holland’s most advanced and powerful tractors, and a CR8.80 combine, equipped with a 20-foot header, showing full support of the Back British Farming message. The T7 tractor range is built in New Holland’s Basildon factory, which has been producing Britishbuilt tractors for over 50 years. New Holland is a strong supporter of British manufacturing and is keen to showcase the value the farming community as a whole adds to the British economy. Mark Crosby, marketing manager for New Holland UK and Ireland, says: “The Lord Mayor’s Show is a historic, world famous pageant with a long tradition of showcasing the best of British. New Holland is a strong advocate

36 | Working Farmer | www.workingfarmer.co.uk

of British manufacturing and our Basildon factory proudly produces British built tractors to export globally. It’s an honour to play a part in the procession and display our support for Britain’s hardworking food and farming industry.” Members of the Worshipful Company of Farmers and the NFU will accompany the New Holland machines in the procession. In addition, there will be eight young farmers each representing one of the NFU’s English and Welsh regions. Each representative has been chosen for making an outstanding contribution to the agricultural sector and is set to be at the forefront of Britain’s farming future. The procession of some 7,500 participants featuring representatives from various livery companies, as well as the armed forces, will follow a route from the Mansion House through the streets of London to the Royal Courts.

NEWS

The Importance of Sprayer Testing Everyone will agree that accurate application of pesticides is not only desirable but essential whether for the environment, the consumer or the grower

A

ccurate and targeted use of pesticides is all part of modern agriculture. That’s why back in the mid 90’s the Chemical Application members of the Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA) devised a test for application machinery to make sure it was working as intended. In the early years of 2000 this test became the National Sprayer Testing Scheme as one of the main pillars of the Voluntary Initiative. NSTS now tests around 16,500 machines annually with the test also satisfying the requirements of the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD), which requires that all pesticide application equipment, sprayers, slug pellet applicators, granular applicators etc., need to be tested by 26th November 2016 and at regular intervals thereafter. NSTS is an accepted part of arable agriculture and requirement of the major crop assurance schemes and

supermarket protocols, requiring that farmers and growers have their sprayers inspected annually. This requirement continues with one of the annual tests satisfying the SUD requirements. The NSTS is available through a network of test centres who have qualified examiners available to inspect and confirm the equipment is of the standard required. The test is usually carried out at the machine owner’s premises and at a mutually agreed time. The examiner will charge for the inspection, the cost is commercial at the point of use. Additionally machine owners are free to use their nearest or preferred test centre. The operator or owner of the machine can prepare the sprayer for the test using a test sheet available from the NSTS website. Owners and operators are encouraged to take part in the test and will receive three NRoSO points for doing so. As confirmation of the result of the test the examiner will apply a pass sticker

to the machine and a copy of the test report form will be sent to the owner. Other copies are returned to NSTS Administration where the information is retained on a database of all tested machines. This information is available to Crop Assurance Certification Bodies and others for verification purposes. With the continued threat of more pesticides being lost, now is the time to contribute to accurate and targeted application procedures, NSTS testing helps achieve that. Having a NSTS test will also satisfy the Sustainable Use Directive which requires all sprayers to be tested by 26th November 2016. Find out more by visiting the NSTS website www.nsts.org.uk Duncan Russell NSTS Manager October 2016

NEW MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE CROSS FORECAST TO BE AMONGST SEGMENT BEST FOR RESIDUAL VALUES

C

IRENCESTER – The allnew Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross will offer some of the very best residual values in its segment, according to industry experts cap hpi, when it launches in the UK in January. cap hpi has forecast that the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross 2 will retain up to 48.1 per cent of its list price after three years or 60,000 miles, while the Eclipse Cross 3 will retain up to 47.5 per cent of its value and even the top-of-the-range Eclipse Cross 4 will retain 46.9 per cent of its value, placing the new Mitsubishi SUV firmly amongst the very best in its segment. It is also one of the strongest results ever achieved by the brand’s vehicles in the UK, an indication of Mitsubishi’s growing reputation as a manufacturer of high-quality and desirable SUV and 4X4 vehicles. The news follows the announcement of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross’s highly competitive pricing, which starts at £21,275 OTR, giving cost-conscious drivers even more reason to consider the new SUV. Heightening its appeal and value is an extensive standard specification that compares favourably to its rivals. The

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross benefits from standard equipment such as Smartphone Display Audio that is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, touch-pad controller, rear view camera, DAB radio with six speakers, climate control air conditioning, LED Daytime Running Lights, Lane Departure Warning and Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM), which uses radar technology to detect a risk of collision.

represents a bold new direction for the brand and is the first of a new generation of models that will position the manufacturer as a leader in the SUV market. It has been developed with a focus on three core areas – inspiring design, driving dynamics and technology. The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross offers a choice of three trim levels – 2, 3 and 4 – with,

Also highlighting the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross’s value is the availability of a version that combines a petrol engine, automatic transmission and four-wheel drive for £25,350 OTR – the most affordable vehicle of its type in its class. Lance Bradley, Managing Director, Mitsubishi Motors in the UK, said: “We are delighted with these results. With the addition of the Eclipse Cross to our range we are able to offer our customers even more choice, providing them with a very attractive package that not only features a comprehensive specification that combines convenience and safety, but is also highly affordable.” The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

depending on version, either two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. From launch, all variants are powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, mated to six-speed manual or all-new eight-step CVT automatic transmissions. A 2.2-litre diesel engine will follow in 2018. The range is priced from £21,275 OTR with the top-of-the range 4 version starting from £24,975 OTR.

ISUZU SUCCESS IN 2017 MPG MARATHON

A

n Isuzu D-Max Utility has been crowned the overall winner in the LCV category of the 2017 MPG Marathon. The event is open to all production cars and commercial vehicles with the aim of finding the most efficient route between set checkpoints around a 350-mile course. Strict time limits are enforced to make conditions as close to the ‘real-world’ as possible and means competitors must drive at the set speed limit. On completion of the course the new generation D-Max was

filled with 28.58 litres (6.29 gallons) of fuel meaning the Utility achieved an impressive 51.2mpg over the two-day event. The official combined cycle figure for the double cab model is 40.4mpg meaning that an impressive 26.8 per cent increase was reached during the Marathon. This is the first time an Isuzu has been tested since models were fitted with a brand new 1.9 litre turbo diesel engine, which produces 164 PS and 360Nm of torque. The engine builds upon D-Max’s workhorse character and retains the 3.5 tonne towing capacity and 1 tonne payload whilst providing a quieter, more

refined and economical driving experience. Another key benefit is that the new engine meets Euro 6 standards without the need for addition of AdBlue. William Brown, Operations Director at Isuzu UK, said: “We’re absolutely delighted with the result because it shows just how efficient the new 1.9 litre turbo diesel engine can be. “It is testimony to all the hard work that has gone in to the new generation Isuzu D-Max and creating such a high-quality product.” The Isuzu D-Max range is available on the road from £16,499.00 and comes with a with a five-year / 125,000-mile warranty.

ELEVATING THE AUDI Q7 – THE NEW VORSPRUNG AND BLACK EDITIONS New editions of acclaimed Q7 and SQ7 TDI introduce the most comprehensive list of standard equipment yet for the sevenseat SUV Audi Q7 and SQ7 TDI Vorsprung editions now available to order priced from £77,905 OTR Black Edition specification also joins the Q7 range, priced from £64,405 OTR Vorsprung specification highlights: 22-inch wheels, super sport seats, extended leather, running boards, headup display and Matrix LED headlights Parking assistance and Driving Assistance Tour pack also fitted in Vorsprung specification The Audi Q7 narrows the margin between luxury limousine and SUV still further this week as it becomes available with an exceptional new Vorsprung specification. Unlocking many of the most advanced features of the versatile seven-seat SUV, while also significantly upgrading visual appeal and accommodation, Vorsprung brings on board the highest level of standard equipment ever offered for a Q7. It is available in combination with the 272PS 3.0 TDI V6 engine and also for the exceptional

435PS SQ7 with its V8 TDI. At the same time, the ever-popular Black Edition specification also makes its debut in the Q7 model line, bringing with it a distinct design differentiation and a highly desirable equipment package. It is the Black Edition option, available exclusively in conjunction with the 272PS 3.0 TDI, which occupies the first new rung on the ladder above the previously rangetopping S line specification. Q7 Black Edition models go above and beyond their S line counterparts with larger 21inch alloy wheels and a black styling pack extending to the radiator grille frame, profile trim strip, front bumper styling accents and door mirrors. Black inlays set the tone in the interior, which also benefits from an upholstery upgrade to premium quality Valcona leather. The addition of a full-length panoramic sunroof bathes the interior of the seven-seat SUV in natural sunlight, and in the dark the ambient lighting pack immerses the interior in a soft LED hue in customisable colours. A flat-bottomed multi-function

steering wheel and the Audi Virtual Cockpit also expand the equipment list. The latter renders a beautfiully crisp fully digital instrument display with user-configurable graphics, infotainment menus and highresolution mapping practically covering the 12.3-inch TFT screen space, enabling quick and easy functionality without distraction from the road ahead. Adaptive air suspension sport – appearing for the first time in the UK Q7 range – is another gain for the Black Edition. It lowers the body by 15mm and continually adjusts the damping for a cosseting ride coupled with responsive handling on tarmac, and seamless adaptation to rougher terrain. A rear view camera

completes the Q7 Black Edition specification. Vorsprung by name and nature Carrying over all the above enhancements to comfort and convenience, the new Q7 Vorsprung edition delivers even greater road presence through a wheel upgrade to a 22-inch Audi Sport design and the addition of running boards (excluding SQ7 TDI models), complemented by the black styling pack. It also cloisters its occupants in even greater comfort and luxury thanks to the

addition of ultra-supportive front super sport seats with memory functionality and diamond contrast stitching for the Valcona leather upholstery, plus an extended leather pack taking in the door pull handles, armrests and lower door trim, the front centre console trim and the underside of the instrument panel. Seat heating is also expanded to the second row, and attention is even lavished on the roof, which gains a soft-touch Alcantara headlining. Vorsprung models are also fitted with an advanced key for ease of access and the Audi Phone Box to provide wireless charging for all Qi-enabled mobile phones. There is also the addition of a head-up display which projects important information such as vehicle speed and assistance system notifications onto the windscreen in the driver’s direct field of vision. And last but by no means least, in terms of audio-visual gains the 3D

Matrix LED headlights guide the driver with precise illumination of the road ahead and adapt the light beam continuously to the prevailing conditions. The Driving Assistance Tour Pack is also added, equipping the Q7 Vorsprung with level 2 partial autonomy in the form of adaptive cruise control, active lane assist and traffic jam assist. Up to speeds of 37mph, these systems work together to steer, brake and accelerate the SUV in congestion, alleviating associated travel stress. As a further salve for stressed drivers, the Parking Assistance Pack is also part of the Vorsprung specification. It consists of Park Assist to provide independent steering of the vehicle into parallel or bay parking spaces, a 360-degree camera and Side Assist for blind spot monitoring with visual and acoustic warnings. Pricing starts from £64,405 OTR for Black Edition models, from £77,905 OTR for the Q7 Vorsprung and from £88,295 OTR for the SQ7 TDI Vorsprung.
