McCormick Corporate Partnership with NAAC

he UK and Ireland distributor of McCormick – AgriArgo UK – aims to support the activities of Britain’s agricultural contractors by joining their representative organisation as a corporate partner. Ray Spinks, General Manager and Sales Director at AgriArgo, says the National Association of Agricultural Contractors (NAAC) is widely recognised as doing a good job for professional operators providing services in agriculture and other landbased sectors. “Apart from generally promoting the advantages of using contractors and supporting them with advice and information, the NAAC does a lot of behind-thescenes work, representing the interests of contractors at the highest level,” he points out. “The NAAC contributes contractor perspectives in

consultations by government and regulating authorities, has created good working practice standards to reinforce professionalism and provides valuable guidance on many aspects of business management. “Individual contractors have just one voice; but as members of the NAAC, they have a much stronger collective voice to express their views and interests.” AgriArgo will make its corporate member debut at the NAAC’s Contractor 2017 event, the only national gathering organised specifically for professional land-based contractors, being held on December 14 at the East of England Showground, Peterborough. “The programme should attract everyone with an interest in providing contract services,” suggests Ray Spinks. “With speakers such as the NFU president, a food chain expert and the national

adviser with the agricultural valuers’ association, the event should provide some useful insights into the future role of contractors, especially in a post-Brexit British agriculture.” AgriArgo aims to forge closer links with contractors through its NAAC partnership and contribute its views and information on issues such as farm vehicle roadworthiness, operator training standards, and the machinery supply chain. “We already have an interest in the contracting sector through operators who run our McCormick X7 and other models,” Mr Spinks emphasises. “But with the imminent introduction of the 300hp+ McCormick X8 Series, which takes the range to new levels of power and performance, we’re confident of supplying more contractors in future.”

Customers can now access all of the available information about the DEUTZ aftersales offering and can order genuine DEUTZ spare parts from their local service partners 24/7. Prior to the launch, the portal underwent a successful test phase involving a pilot partner. There is an extensive range of spare parts for DEUTZ engines

available on the internet, but it is often difficult to find the right one. Only the DEUTZ service portal can accurately identify all suitable spare parts. The portal's ability to access the documentation for more than 1.5 million DEUTZ engines, and therefore to be the most up to date with regards to technical developments, is a decisive benefit. It can display a list of spare parts to match each engine number, for example. The service portal combines the benefits of the World Wide Web â&#x20AC;&#x201C; unlimited availability round the clock â&#x20AC;&#x201C; with the strengths offered by an expert local aftersales service. The provision of aftersales support and parts delivery will remain in the hands of the customer's local DEUTZ partner. This allows delivery times to be minimised and the most efficient support to be provided. A major plus for business customers is the ability for customised price agreements to be displayed in the online

ousingWhether cows are housed in cubicles, straw yards or cow sheds, in order to maximise performance and to ensure satisfactory standards of welfare, the accommodation must at least provide for the animalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most basic needs. As an absolute minimum, the housing must provide a comfortable, clean, well-drained and dry lying area together with shelter from adverse weather, space to allow the animal to move, lie down and rise freely as well as access to adequate food and water. All housing for cattle should include an adequate provision of calving pens and sick pens for isolation of sick or injured animals. All cattle farms should also have provision for isolation and quarantine of bought-in animals in a separate building, unless the herd is genuinely closed and never buys in replacement or breeding animals. If the housing system does not provide for these basic needs, then not only will both production and welfare be compromised, but it is likely that you are also failing to comply with the welfare codes and the law relating to animal welfare in your area.

Cubicles CubiclesCubicle management should be similarly well planned, as uncomfortable or unsuitable cubicles can lead to poor occupancy, wet and soiled cubicle beds, increased risk of udder disease and lameness as well as physical damage to the cows. Appropriate cubicle length will accommodate the need for both forward lunging space and rear clearance to ensure the animal doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t soil the bedding. Equally important, the cubicle should be wide enough for the cow to lie down without rubbing against the partitions, but narrow enough to prevent them turning around. The required dimensions of a cubicle are dependent on the size of the cow, however DairyCo have created a useful guide to calculating the right sized cubicle for your system. To compliment a good cubicle set up, a suitable depth and choice of bedding will ensure comfort when lying down as well as preventing knee and hock injuries. When choosing bedding, consider: Thermal insulation properties Softness, Traction, The use of lime under fresh bedding, not on top of it, Low risk of abrasion, Easily maintained, Cost effective Cubicle bases other than concrete should also be considered. Sand (must be washed) and limestone, in particular, have advantages over concrete-based beds with regard to cow comfort, but require careful maintenance.

Loose Housing Appropriate design of yards, avoiding dampness and contamination from water troughs and narrow entry points, is equally important. Separate housing of first calving heifers should be considered (see also Herd Health for more on disease risks associated with housing) The lying area must be under cover and bedded. The additional area may be inside or outside and does not have to be bedded.

Loafing Areas A loafing area is a space cows can use for behaviours other than feeding or lying- such as displaying oestrus behaviour and social bonding. Cattle can spend a lot of time utilising outdoor loafing areas, often using the area to regulate body temperature when humidity and temperature are high. It is advised that the loafing area size is 120% of the cubicle lying area. Loafing areas can include nonfeed passageways and non-lying areas. Although loafing is provided at pasture, the weather limits utilisation of such areas and thus an indoor loafing area with access to an outdoor loafing area is desirable. As with housing, the amount of slurry in the loafing areas should be managed, and scraped at least twice daily to prevent health problems and encourage use.

Cow Comfort A comfortable cow is a happy cow, and a happy healthy cow in turn, proves to be a profitable cow. Grooming aids are a great addition to any farm, and are often used extensively by cattle once installed. Grooming is a natural social activity for cows, and brushes have proven to positively contribute to the welfare of housed animals. Working Farmer | www.workingfarmer.co.uk | 15

The animals' powerful immune systems rapidly produce special antibodies that neutralise the virus, scientists found. Only 10 to 20 per cent of humans with HIV naturally develop the "broadly neutralising antibodies" (bNAbs) and those who do, only begin generating them about two years after infection, by which time the virus has

Arla's November milk price remains unchanged at 32.3ppl

Six Ways Drones Are Revolutionizing Agriculture Drones aren’t new technology by any means. Now, however, thanks to robust investments and a somewhat more relaxed regulatory environment, it appears their time has arrived—especially in agriculture.

nmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)—better known as drones—have been used commercially since the early 1980s. Today, however, practical applications for drones are expanding faster than ever in a variety of industries, thanks to robust investments and the relaxing of some regulations governing their use. Responding to the rapidly evolving technology, companies are creating new business and operating models for UAVs. The total addressable value of drone-powered solutions in all applicable industries is significant—more than $127 billion, according to a recent PwC analysis. Among the most promising areas is agriculture, where drones offer the potential for addressing several major challenges. With the world’s population projected to reach 9 billion people by 2050, experts expect agricultural consumption to increase by nearly 70 percent over the same time period. In addition,

extreme weather events are on the rise, creating additional obstacles to productivity. Agricultural producers must embrace revolutionary strategies for producing food, increasing productivity, and making sustainability a priority. Drones are part of the solution, along with closer collaboration between governments, technology leaders, and industry. Six Options for Agricultural Drones Drone technology will give the agriculture industry a high-technology makeover, with planning and strategy based on real-time data gathering and processing. PwC estimates the market for drone-powered solutions in agriculture at $32.4 billion. Following are six ways aerial and ground-based drones will be used throughout the crop cycle: 1. Soil and field analysis: Drones can be instrumental at the start of the crop cycle. They produce precise 3-D maps for early soil analysis, useful in planning seed

planting patterns. After planting, drone-driven soil analysis provides data for irrigation and nitrogen-level management. 2. Planting: Startups have created drone-planting systems that achieve an uptake rate of 75 percent and decrease planting costs by 85 percent. These systems shoot pods with seeds and plant nutrients into the soil, providing the plant all the nutrients necessary to sustain life. 3. Crop spraying: Distancemeasuring equipment— ultrasonic echoing and lasers such as those used in the light-detection and ranging, or LiDAR, method—enables a drone to adjust altitude as the topography and geography vary, and thus avoid collisions. Consequently, drones can scan the ground and spray the correct amount of liquid, modulating distance from the ground and spraying in real time for even coverage. The result: increased efficiency with a reduction of in the amount of

chemicals penetrating into groundwater. In fact, experts estimate that aerial spraying can be completed up to five times faster with drones than with traditional machinery. 4. Crop monitoring: Vast fields and low efficiency in crop monitoring together create farming’s largest obstacle. Monitoring challenges are exacerbated by increasingly unpredictable weather conditions, which drive risk and field maintenance costs. Previously, satellite imagery offered the most advanced form of monitoring. But there were drawbacks. Images had to be ordered in advance, could be taken only once a day, and were imprecise. Further, services were extremely costly and the images’ quality typically suffered on certain days. Today, time-series animations can show the precise development of a crop and reveal production inefficiencies, enabling better crop management. 5. Irrigation: Drones with hyperspectral, multispectral,

or thermal sensors can identify which parts of a field are dry or need improvements. Additionally, once the crop is growing, drones allow the calculation of the vegetation index, which describes the relative density and health of the crop, and show the heat signature, the amount of energy or heat the crop emits. 6. Health assessment: It’s essential to assess crop health and spot bacterial or fungal infections on trees. By scanning a crop using both visible and near-infrared light, drone-carried devices can identify which plants reflect different amounts of green light and NIR light. This information can produce multispectral images that track changes in plants and indicate their health. A speedy response can save an entire orchard. In addition, as soon as a sickness is discovered, farmers can apply and monitor remedies more precisely. These two possibilities increase a plant’s ability to overcome disease. And in the case of

crop failure, the farmer will be able to document losses more efficiently for insurance claims. What’s Next? Looking further into the future, UAVs might involve fleets, or swarms, of autonomous drones that could tackle agricultural monitoring tasks collectively, as well as hybrid aerialground drone actors that could collect data and perform a variety of other tasks. So, what’s slowing the progress of drones in agriculture? Beyond the barriers to widespread drone adoption in all industries— safety of drone operations, privacy issues, and insurancecoverage questions—the biggest agricultural concern is the type and quality of data that can be captured. To address this, the industry will push for more sophisticated sensors and cameras, as well as look to develop drones that require minimal training and are highly automated.

rom year model 2017 the tine cultivator Cultus can be delivered in three versions, customised for a range of field conditions. Because of this, there is a Cultus available for every soil type. Depending on the need for reconsolidation and weight distribution, the tine cultivator Cultus can now be delivered as a mounted machine without the hydraulic packer. Instead of the packer, Cultus is equipped with hydraulic levellers and carrier wheels. Heat oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 3. Put the kettle on. Put the celery, onion, carrots, bay and 1 thyme sprig in a casserole dish with 1 tbsp oil and the butter. Soften for 10 mins, then stir in the flour until it doesn’t look dusty anymore, followed by the tomato purée, Worcestershire sauce and

beef stock cubes. Gradually stir in 600ml hot water, then tip in the beef and bring to a gentle simmer. Cover and put in the oven for 2hrs 30 mins, then uncover and cook for 30mins – 1hr more until the meat is really tender and the sauce is thickened.

Each year most of the 110 Livery Companies of the City parade through the streets of the square mile to welcome a new Lord

Mayor of London. This year’s entry by the Worshipful Company of Farmers, led by the company’s Master Julian Sayers, will centre on a New Holland T7.225 tractor, one of New Holland’s most advanced and powerful tractors, and a CR8.80 combine, equipped with a 20-foot header, showing full support of the Back British Farming message. The T7 tractor range is built in New Holland’s Basildon factory, which has been producing Britishbuilt tractors for over 50 years. New Holland is a strong supporter of British manufacturing and is keen to showcase the value the farming community as a whole adds to the British economy. Mark Crosby, marketing manager for New Holland UK and Ireland, says: “The Lord Mayor’s Show is a historic, world famous pageant with a long tradition of showcasing the best of British. The Importance of Sprayer Testing Everyone will agree that accurate application of pesticides is not only desirable but essential whether for the environment, the consumer or the grower

ccurate and targeted use of pesticides is all part of modern agriculture. That’s why back in the mid 90’s the Chemical Application members of the Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA) devised a test for application machinery to make sure it was working as intended. In the early years of 2000 this test became the National Sprayer Testing Scheme as one of the main pillars of the Voluntary Initiative. NSTS now tests around 16,500 machines annually with the test also satisfying the requirements of the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD), which requires that all pesticide application equipment, sprayers, slug pellet applicators, granular applicators etc., need to be tested by 26th November 2016 and at regular intervals thereafter. NSTS is an accepted part of arable agriculture and requirement of the major crop assurance schemes and

supermarket protocols, requiring that farmers and growers have their sprayers inspected annually. This requirement continues with one of the annual tests satisfying the SUD requirements. The NSTS is available through a network of test centres who have qualified examiners available to inspect and confirm the equipment is of the standard required. The test is usually carried out at the machine owner’s premises and at a mutually agreed time. The examiner will charge for the inspection, the cost is commercial at the point of use. Additionally machine owners are free to use their nearest or preferred test centre. The operator or owner of the machine can prepare the sprayer for the test using a test sheet available from the NSTS website. Owners and operators are encouraged to take part in the test and will receive three NRoSO points for doing so. As confirmation of the result of the test the examiner will apply a pass sticker

to the machine and a copy of the test report form will be sent to the owner. Other copies are returned to NSTS Administration where the information is retained on a database of all tested machines. This information is available to Crop Assurance Certification Bodies and others for verification purposes. With the continued threat of more pesticides being lost, now is the time to contribute to accurate and targeted application procedures, NSTS testing helps achieve that. Having a NSTS test will also satisfy the Sustainable Use Directive which requires all sprayers to be tested by 26th November 2016. ISUZU SUCCESS IN 2017 MPG MARATHON

n Isuzu D-Max Utility has been crowned the overall winner in the LCV category of the 2017 MPG Marathon. The event is open to all production cars and commercial vehicles with the aim of finding the most efficient route between set checkpoints around a 350-mile course. Strict time limits are enforced to make conditions as close to the ‘real-world’ as possible and means competitors must drive at the set speed limit. On completion of the course the new generation D-Max was

filled with 28.58 litres (6.29 gallons) of fuel meaning the Utility achieved an impressive 51.2mpg over the two-day event. Adaptive air suspension sport – appearing for the first time in the UK Q7 range – is another gain for the Black Edition. It also cloisters its occupants in even greater comfort and luxury thanks to the

addition of ultra-supportive front super sport seats with memory functionality and diamond contrast stitching for the Valcona leather upholstery, plus an extended leather pack taking in the door pull handles, armrests and lower door trim, the front centre console trim and the underside of the instrument panel. Matrix LED headlights guide the driver with precise illumination of the road ahead and adapt the light beam continuously to the prevailing conditions. The Driving Assistance Tour Pack is also added, equipping the Q7 Vorsprung with level 2 partial autonomy in the form of adaptive cruise control, active lane assist and traffic jam assist. Up to speeds of 37mph, these systems work together to steer, brake and accelerate the SUV in congestion, alleviating associated travel stress. As a further salve for stressed drivers, the Parking Assistance Pack is also part of the Vorsprung specification. It consists of Park Assist to provide independent steering of the vehicle into parallel or bay parking spaces, a 360-degree camera and Side Assist for blind spot monitoring with visual and acoustic warnings.
