New Holland returns to Cereals in 2018
F
lagship CR Revelation combine harvester and FR920 Forage Harvester will be on display. The new T6 Dynamic CommandTM multi-purpose tractor will be showcased, along with the T7 Heavy Duty tractor. Two New Holland tractors will pull trailers to shuttle visitors to and from the event car parks New Holland returns to Cereals in 2018 and will be showcasing some of its latest machines. Visitors to stand 887 will see the CR9.80 Revelation 24” SmarTrax with Flex Technology, part of the CR Revelation range – its latest rotary combine models launched in 2017 - and the flagship FR920 forage harvester. The manufacturer’s new T6 Direct CommandTM and
high performance T7 Heavy Duty tractors will also be on display. New Holland has also provided the UK’s leading arable event with two T6 tractors to pull the visitor ride-on trailer shuttle to and from the car park on both days in style. CR9.80 Revelation Combine Harvester The latest CR models have been designed with increased capacity in mind. Both narrow and wide width models feature more space in the rotor tube for increased capacity at a lower power requirement. The new styling also ensures improved visibility and serviceability.Launched at harvest 2017, the narrow frame CR7.90 and CR8.80 features a revised rotor cage, which increases the

space available for threshing while the latest Twin Pitch Rotors and a revised Dynamic Feed Roll maintain crop throughput in even the most difficult harvesting conditions. The wide frame models now feature Twin Pitch Plus as standard, the rotor configuration that was developed especially for the world-beating CR10.90. Residue management is likely to be one of the biggest challenges facing farmers over the next ten years so, the CR8.90, CR9.80, CR9.90 and range topping CR10.90 all benefit from a revised residue management system including, an award-winning chaff distribution system, a revised straw chopper rotor for finer chopping and, revisions to the OptiSpreadTM system to ensure even spreading of chopped
material out to 14.5 metres. FR920 Forage Harvester One of the stars on the New Holland stand at Cereals will be the new flagship FR920, featuring the all-new FPT Industrial V20 engine developed specifically for forage harvesting applications. It delivers a massive 670 kW (911 hp) maximum power at 1600 to 1800 rpm, 4,095 Nm maximum torque and a productivity-boosting 44% torque rise at 2100-1600 rpm. The power curve is mapped to match the precise requirements of foraging applications ensuring the best transient response, reacting fast to changing load. The V20 engine delivers the most fuel-efficient performance in the 1600 to 1900 rpm working range. This, together with the low maintenance costs
results in the machine’s excellent Total Cost of Operation. Tractors
via New Holland dealers with demonstration units becoming available from May 2018.

Offering between 145 and 175 max hp with engine power management, the lowest fuel consumption levels of a 4-cylinder agricultural tractor, and a host of productivityboosting features, the T6 Dynamic Command models sets a new benchmark in efficiency. The T6 24x24 Dynamic Command adds further choice to the popular Basildon-Built T6 range, complementing the T6 Electro CommandTM and Auto CommandTM models.

H
ousingWhether cows are housed in cubicles, straw yards or cow sheds, in order to maximise performance and to ensure satisfactory standards of welfare, the accommodation must at least provide for the animal’s most basic needs. As an absolute minimum, the housing must provide a comfortable, clean, well-drained and dry lying area together with shelter from adverse weather, space to allow the animal to move, lie down and rise freely as well as access to adequate food and water. All housing for cattle should include an adequate provision of calving pens and sick pens for isolation of sick or injured animals. All cattle farms should also have provision for isolation and quarantine of bought-in animals in a separate building, unless the herd is genuinely closed and never buys in replacement or breeding animals. If the housing system does not provide for these basic needs, then not only will both production and welfare be compromised, but it is likely that you are also failing to comply with the welfare codes and the law relating to animal welfare in your area.
Cubicles CubiclesCubicle management should be similarly well planned, as uncomfortable or unsuitable cubicles can lead to poor occupancy, wet and soiled cubicle beds, increased risk of udder disease and lameness as well as physical damage to the cows. Appropriate cubicle length will accommodate the need for both forward lunging space and rear clearance to ensure the animal doesn’t soil the bedding. Equally important, the cubicle should be wide enough for the cow to lie down without rubbing against the partitions, but narrow enough to prevent them turning around. The required dimensions of a cubicle are dependent on the size of the cow, however DairyCo have created a useful guide to calculating the right sized cubicle for your system. To compliment a good cubicle set up, a suitable depth and choice of bedding will ensure comfort when lying down as well as preventing knee and hock injuries. When choosing bedding, consider: Thermal insulation properties Softness, Traction, The use of lime under fresh bedding, not on top of it, Low risk of abrasion, Easily maintained, Cost effective Cubicle bases other than concrete should also be considered. Sand (must be washed) and limestone, in particular, have advantages over concrete-based beds with regard to cow comfort, but require careful maintenance.

Appropriate design of yards, avoiding dampness and contamination from water troughs and narrow entry points, is equally important. Separate housing of first calving heifers should be considered (see also Herd Health for more on disease risks associated with housing) The lying area must be under cover and bedded. The additional area may be inside or outside and does not have to be bedded.
Loafing Areas A loafing area is a space cows can use for behaviours other than feeding or lying- such as displaying oestrus behaviour and social bonding. Cattle can spend a lot of time utilising outdoor loafing areas, often using the area to regulate body temperature when humidity and temperature are high. It is advised that the loafing area size is 120% of the cubicle lying area. Loafing areas can include nonfeed passageways and non-lying areas. Although loafing is provided at pasture, the weather limits utilisation of such areas and thus an indoor loafing area with access to an outdoor loafing area is desirable. As with housing, the amount of slurry in the loafing areas should be managed, and scraped at least twice daily to prevent health problems and encourage use.
Cow Comfort A comfortable cow is a happy cow, and a happy healthy cow in turn, proves to be a profitable cow. Grooming aids are a great addition to any farm, and are often used extensively by cattle once installed. Grooming is a natural social activity for cows, and brushes have proven to positively contribute to the welfare of housed animals. Working Farmer | www.workingfarmer.co.uk | 15

UK dairy industry surpasses environmental targets The UK dairy sector has achieved an 18.05% energy efficiency improvement since 2008, according to recently published results.
W
ith this improvement, the sector has already exceeded the 2020 Climate Change Agreement and Dairy Roadmap targets of 13.6% and 15% respectively. The 2020 package is a set of binding legislation to ensure that EU Memebr States meets its climate and energy targets for the year 2020. The package sets three key targets: 20% cut in greenhouse gas emissions (from 1990 levels); 20% of EU energy from renewables; 20% improvement in energy efficiency.
The results for the dairy sector, from the Environment Agency in the Climate Change Agreement biennial progress report, are complemented by those of the 2017 Dairy UK Environmental Benchmarking Report, which details substantial environmental improvements within the UK dairy sector. This includes a 23% increase in water efficiency and a 30% increase in the amount of waste recovered or recycled since 2008. The main findings of the 2017 Dairy UK Environmental Benchmarking Report are;18% increase in primary energy
efficiency (kWh/tonne); 23% increase in water efficiency (m3/tonne); 17.5% increase in raw effluent efficiency (m3/ tonne); 56% decrease in COD per m3 raw effluent and a 30% shift in the destination of waste away from landfill and towards recovery or recycling. Dr Judith Bryans, chief executive of Dairy UK commented on the results, saying: “These are incredibly positive results which demonstrate the effective steps taken by the UK dairy industry to reduce its environmental footprint and meet the targets of The Dairy Roadmap.”
Christmas turkeys on the run in East Yorkshire village Christmas turkeys were on the run in an East Yorkshire village after escaping a lorry. Dozens of birds were left on the road after a lorry jackknifed near North Frodingham, 5.5 miles southeast of the town of Driffield. Grange Road between North Frodingham and Bridlington Road was shut for over an hour. Photos from Driffield & Wolds Weeky show many
of the escaped turkeys have now been captured and are being loaded on the back of a tractor. It is not the first time turkeys have escaped in the run up to Christmas. Last week, a number of turkeys were on the loose after escaping from a crashed trailer on the M5. A crash

The Importance of Sprayer Testing Everyone will agree that accurate application of pesticides is not only desirable but essential whether for the environment, the consumer or the grower
A
ccurate and targeted use of pesticides is all part of modern agriculture. That’s why back in the mid 90’s the Chemical Application members of the Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA) devised a test for application machinery to make sure it was working as intended. In the early years of 2000 this test became the National Sprayer Testing Scheme as one of the main pillars of the Voluntary Initiative. NSTS now tests around 16,500 machines annually with the test also satisfying the requirements of the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD), which requires that all pesticide application equipment, sprayers, slug pellet applicators, granular applicators etc., need to be tested by 26th November 2016 and at regular intervals thereafter. NSTS is an accepted part of arable agriculture and requirement of the major crop assurance schemes and
supermarket protocols, requiring that farmers and growers have their sprayers inspected annually. This requirement continues with one of the annual tests satisfying the SUD requirements. The NSTS is available through a network of test centres who have qualified examiners available to inspect and confirm the equipment is of the standard required. The test is usually carried out at the machine owner’s premises and at a mutually agreed time. The examiner will charge for the inspection, the cost is commercial at the point of use. Additionally machine owners are free to use their nearest or preferred test centre. The operator or owner of the machine can prepare the sprayer for the test using a test sheet available from the NSTS website. Owners and operators are encouraged to take part in the test and will receive three NRoSO points for doing so. As confirmation of the result of the test the examiner will apply a pass sticker
to the machine and a copy of the test report form will be sent to the owner. Other copies are returned to NSTS Administration where the information is retained on a database of all tested machines. This information is available to Crop Assurance Certification Bodies and others for verification purposes. With the continued threat of more pesticides being lost, now is the time to contribute to accurate and targeted application procedures, NSTS testing helps achieve that. Having a NSTS test will also satisfy the Sustainable Use Directive which requires all sprayers to be tested by 26th November 2016. The Hilux found new popularity after it was featured prominently in the BBC motoring show Top Gear, where the Hilux’s reputation for being indestructible was put to the test. A heavily used, 1988 model Hilux was subjected to a series of gruelling trials which saw the pick-up truck being driven into the sea, being hit by a wrecking ball as well as having a caravan dropped on top of it. Despite all of this, the Hilux still managed to function after a short repair job with basic tools. Top Gear then tested a 2005 model Hilux by driving it to the centre of the Arctic. The Hilux would become the first motor vehicle to successfully make the journey, and it only required minor tweaking. Time and time again, the Hilux has proven itself to be a most worthy contender in the pick-up truck market. It has seen many iterations, with each new one making the Hilux more robust than the last. Only time will tell what exciting new innovations will come next.

A new year can mean only one thing as far as Toyo is concerned – new tyres, and 2018 promises to be a big one in terms of new offerings from the world’s foremost off-road tyre supplier. First up, the Open Country M/T, a tyre that’s been designed to be capable and versatile, and evidence of this can be found in its high turnup, 3-Ply polyester casing. This sports hook shaped blocks and an ‘Attack’ tread design which equates to surprisingly civilised and stable road manners. Open, scalloped shoulder blocks bite into the ground and help to eject mud, snow, and rocks while maintaining off-road traction, whilst the ‘Over-The-Shoulder’ tread pattern (something of a Toyo calling card) offers unparalleled traction in deep mud and snow. Proven on the world’s competition stage, this tyre is the ultimate weapon in the war on poor grip and traction! This year sees the Toyo tyre range evolve yet further, with the ever popular Toyo H/T being replaced by the U/T.
It’s a tyre which builds upon its predecessor’s impressive spread of capabilities, namely an ability to provide optimal ride comfort, quiet performance and long wear life. That the U/T can deliver so much in so many areas is down to its symmetrical, non-directional tread design, not forgetting its variable pitch tread blocks, a trait which means a significant reduction in road noise. Suitable for Pickup Trucks, Vans and SUVs, Open Country U/T offers high mileage while providing safe driving in both wet and dry conditions. 2018 is set to
be the year in which the Toyo Open Country AT Plus makes a dent in the off-road tyre market, with the company hoping to build upon the solid foundations laid in 2017, the tyre’s first full year on sale. An aggressive asymmetric tread pattern ticks both form and function boxes, with an open shoulder design allowing easy egress of water and superb stability under duress.
