There is an estimated 1,562 wild boar roaming Gloucestershire and Herefordshire’s Forest of Dean (Photo: Rough Guides)

T

here's further evidence the number of feral wild boar in England is on the rise, with all the risk that brings for the UK's domestic pig population, the National Pig Association has said. The results of the latest survey show there now an estimated 1,562 wild boar roaming Gloucestershire and Herefordshire's Forest of Dean, equating to about 21 per sq.km. This represents more than a 50 per cent increase on the 2015 estimate of 1,018. In the central part of the forest, an area of nearly 43sq.km, estimates of boar numbers increased by 48 per

cent, from 17.4/sq.km in 2015 to 25.8/sq.km this year.

'Genuine' threat to commercial pigs

The authors of a Forestry Commission report on the survey describe the increase as 'disappointing'.

But NPA's Zoe Davies believes the rise in feral wild boar should be viewed as a genuine threat and wants to see more action from Defra.

It occurred despite an organized cull of 422 wild boar in the forest, slightly below the target of 460 estimated to be sufficient to contain population increase. Modelling suggests a further cull of 712 animals is now required to stabilise the population. The NPA says the failure to control feral wild boar, which are also present on the public forest estate in Kent and Sussex, is "storing up potential problems" for the pig industry.

She said: "The everexpanding feral wild boar population in the Forest of Dean poses a significant threat to the health of commercial pigs. "Wild boar can and do gain access to pig farms, where they steal food and mate with sows, therefore the potential for disease spread is considerable. "In the event of a notifiable disease outbreak, this risks the UK pig industry losing its export market – something

that would be impossible to regain with such high numbers. "We want to see a more coordinated and effective approach to management of wild boar populations – the latest census figures only highlight the urgency of that. "NPA believes it is vital that Defra pressures the Forestry Commission to allocate the appropriate resources, including financial support, to the proper management of these animals." NPA is also calling for Defra to review the Dangerous Wild Animals Act to include wild boar crosses and to come up with properly defined criteria for a licence for farmed wild boar, such as fencing requirements.

An outbreak of American Foulbrood (AFB), a disease affecting colonies of honeybees, has been found in an apiary near Inverness. The disease was confirmed on 19 August 2016 following laboratory diagnosis by Science and Advice for Scottish Agriculture (SASA).

T

he AFB infected hive has been destroyed as there is no permitted treatment for the disease in the UK.

There are no risks to public health from AFB and no implications for the quality and safety of honey. The apiary is located at Scaniport, an area west of Inverness and the movement of bees and related equipment into or out of the affected area is prohibited. Bee farmers and beekeepers are being urged to be

vigilant for signs of the disease, to maintain good husbandry practices and to notify any suspicion of disease to the government. Classic signs of the disease are sunken cappings on cells, which when uncapped reveal dead larvae in various stages of decomposition. The larvae have a caramel like, light to dark brown consistency and when drawn out, the decomposing material strings out rather than snapping off – the ropiness test.

ur Pink Bale Wrap is Back! Following the huge success of last years' campaign, we are once again helping to raise money for breast cancer research by launching a special pink version of our Topwrap silage bale film. For every roll of the pink Topwrap film purchased, £3 will be donated to the charity Breast Cancer Now – with contributions toward the £3 coming from Volac, as well as Trioplast, the film’s manufacturer, and from the merchant supplying the roll. Note: Topwrap RS1900 pink bale wrap has 1900m of film on a roll, as opposed to the standard green wrap sold which is 1500m. On average it is 7% cheaper than standard wrap and wraps 26.6% more bales. As well as helping the charity by opting for the special pink silage wrap, farmers will also be visibly demonstrating their support as they produce brightly coloured pink bales on their farms. Last year, pink bales appeared across the country. Following the huge success of last years’ campaign, we are once again helping to raise money for breast cancer research by launching a special pink version of our Topwrap silage bale film. NOAH welcomes protection of antibiotics for animals and people Today’s publication of ‘Tackling Drug Resistant Infections Globally: Final Report and Recommendations’, by Lord Jim O’Neill, is a global landmark in the fight to keep antibiotics effective for both animals and people, says NOAH, which represents the UK animal medicines sector.

N

OAH Chief Executive Dawn Howard says: “We endorse the proposal for incentives to develop innovative new treatments and better diagnostics: these must include the veterinary sector, so that animal medicines are available to treat the diseases that vets and farmers encounter. Improving the availability and uptake of vaccines, which is also proposed, can reduce the need for antibiotics. Veterinary surgeons need access to a range of medicines, including antibiotics, in order to treat the conditions and species under their care and support the high standards of animal welfare our society expects. “The Report’s call for improved surveillance will build on work already being undertaken within the different livestock sectors, for example in the UK poultry and pig sectors. Targets to reduce antibiotic use must be based on

an understanding of why and where antibiotics are currently used, and we welcome the Report’s suggestion that careful consideration must be given to how any target setting will be done. Once the facts have been established, resources can then be focussed on areas where change is most needed to reduce any unnecessary use.

colistin,” Dawn Howard says. “Any changes need to be given a realistic timeframe in order that animal welfare is not compromised – something the report itself acknowledges,” she adds.

“It is important to remember that in the UK – and indeed throughout the EU, veterinary antibiotics are only available on veterinary prescription and have been banned as growth promoters since 2006,” she adds.

“We also fully support the Report’s call for a global public awareness campaign of this ‘One Health’ issue involving both human and animal health to improve understanding and compliance. This is a global report for a global problem, with practical recommendations and calls to action, both on the international stage and here in the UK.”

The Report recommends restrictions on certain antibiotics for veterinary use. “NOAH believes that any such decisions must be based on independent regulatory officials’ expert opinions and must follow the agreed regulatory process – such as the recent EMA (European Medicines Agency) reevaluation of the veterinary use of

Dawn Howard concludes: “The UK animal medicines sector looks forward to its role in implementing the Report’s recommendations by being part of the collaboration between UK government and industry, to develop practical proposals so that antibiotics remain effective to protect the health of people and animals into the future.”

Where do cattle come from?

B

os taurus (European cattle) are descended from the Auroch that lived in Northern Europe. They were domesticated as long ago as the Neolithic age and have been kept as livestock ever since for their meat, milk and hides. Historically there was less distinction between dairy cattle and beef cattle, with the same breeds used for both milk and meat. However, in the developed world today farmers generally keep either beef or dairy cattle. Through generations of selection, dairy breeds such as the Holstein, are bred specifically to produce very high volumes of milk. The calves of dairy and beef cows are likely to have very different lives. Beef cattle are generally slaughtered after one to two years in Europe but they can be up to five years old in the case of extensively reared animals. Female dairy calves are usually reared on for milk production. Dairy cows produce some male calves which are generally less suitable for beef production. Sadly,

in the UK some of these are either shot at birth or could be exported to low welfare veal farms outside the UK. Fortunately the number of calves being exported from England, Scotland and Wales is low currently, but several thousand animals are exported to the continent each year from Northern Ireland. Due to co-operation between Compassion in World Farming, the RSPCA and the industry through the Calf Stakeholder Forum, more male dairy calves are now reared humanely for beef and the number of calves being shot at birth has greatly decreased. There is more work to do - around 55, 000 dairy calves are still shot every year. Beef cattle are often reared outdoors on grass, although many are brought indoors or crowded into feedlots for fattening before slaughter. Even though many cattle in the UK, Ireland and Northern France are fattened on

grass, many cattle are kept indoors and fattened on a high grain diet across most of Europe. In indoor systems, beef cattle are commonly housed on slatted floors in crowded conditions, which increases aggression and can lead to severe injuries and lameness. There are also specific welfare concerns for dairy cows and calves.

Moo Holland

Moo Holland paints a countryside picture for charity at Countryfile Live! Moo Holland, a lifesized fiberglass cow painted to depict a countryside landscape by artist Jenny Leonard, has been unveiled at Countryfile Live, a new event based on the popular BBC television programme. The decorated cow is a member of the Surrey CowParade, a public art exhibition which raises money for charitable causes and community projects.

M

Moo Holland will provide muchneeded funds to help farmers in England and Wales. The charity was among those who helped farmers affected by the flooding on the Somerset Levels in 2014 and In the north of England in December 2015.

Sara Sebastianelli, Brand Communications at New Holland Agriculture UK and Ireland says: “Supporting farmers and farming families is very important to us at New Holland. We are really excited to be at CountryFile Live to meet members of the public and show off Moo Holland for the first time. We felt that the Addington Fund, who we have supported in the past, was the ideal charity to benefit from this initiative”.

Once the exhibition ends the cows from the Surrey CowParade will be auctioned-off for charity with the proceeds split between a charity of the sponsor’s choice and Surrey CowParade’s charity, the Surrey Hills Trust Fund. New Holland is supporting farming charity Addington Fund and money raised from the auction of

Ian Bell, Chief Executive of Addington Fund describes why raising money through initiatives like Moo Holland and Surrey CowParade is vital. He says: “It’s a sad fact that many farmers risk losing their home when they have to leave the agricultural industry, often through no fault of their own. The continuing dairy crisis

oo Holland’s UK tour got udderway on the New Holland stand at Countryfile Live, which takes place at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire from 4th – 7th August. After the event Moo Holland will moo-ve to London where intrepid commuters, tourists and children can visit her in the peaceful courtyard of St. Bride’s Church, just off Fleet Street between the 8th and 31st August. Moo Holland’s sponsors include agricultural machinery manufacturer

with many farmers losing money on every pint of milk they produce had led to many thousands facing financial ruin and forced to leave dairy farming. “Elderly tenant farmers who don’t own the land they farm are particularly at risk of homelessness once they give up their tenancy. Many cannot afford the market rates for private rented properties and so they come to us for help.” The CowParade is the world’s largest public art event and this year’s event includes over 50 bovine beauties at various locations across Surrey and London. The exhibition runs until 3rd September when all the cows will be herded back to Surrey CowParade HQ to be on display at the Surrey Hills Festival of Food and Drink at Coverwood Farm, Ewehurst, Surrey, before being auctioned. Measuring 84, long, 29, wide and 48, high, with a 83, girth, Moo Holland was brought to

life by artist Jenny Leonard who painted her to depict an iconic countryside landscape at harvest time, complete with tractors, combine harvesters and fields of golden corn. The artist was selected by Addington Fund for her experience in painting animal sculptures for public art trails. A time-lapse video showing Jenny painting Moo Holland can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/ mWk4djWBOwk Talking about Moo Holland’s trip to London after Countryfile Live, Sara Sebastianelli, Brand Communications at New Holland Agriculture UK and Ireland says: “We’re proud to be bringing the countryside to London and releasing Moo Holland into the city. Londoners will be able find her at St Bride’s Church on the worldfamous Fleet Street, and admire the beautiful countryside-inspired artwork created by Jenny. Moo Holland loves a selfie and we hope that people will share snaps taken with her using the hashtag #MooHolland.

CCIR trials indicate early success

T

Trials of the Collection and Communication of Inspection Results (CCIR) postmortem condition cards and training of meat inspectors will commence in late September to help standardise and streamline the quality of data. Emma Bailey-Beech, AHDB Pork food safety project manager, said Karro Food Group in Malton was one of the five processing

plants involved in the wider trial.

she adds.

“Working as part of the CCIR team, consisting of FSA, AHDB, BMPA and the other major UK pork processors, Karro, as one of the UK’s major slaughter sites, saw the benefit in the change from paper-based recording to the ‘one vision’ approach,” says Emma.

“Karro has reported that good progress has been made and endorses the new system, acknowledging that it has great potential in supplying pig producers with accurate realtime information concerning the health and welfare of pigs delivered to site.”

“They were keen to get involved in the testing phase and are using additional screens on the line to record the new condensed list of offal and carcase conditions,”

Emma says that, following the trials, all the FSA inspectors will be trained with the finalised conditions cards. “The effectiveness of both the

condition cards and training package will be validated with an online verification assessment in late September, this will be measured against an already completed baseline assessment carried out at Karro. Once complete, this training will be rolled out regionally.” For more information, please contact Martin Smith: martin. smith@ahdb.org.uk 024 7647 8977. Or email: iris@ foodstandards.gsi.co.uk

Maximise value of forthcoming silage cuts Livestock farmers facing reduced yields of first cut grass silage after this year’s cold spring should look to maximise the value of forthcoming cuts, in order to avoid shortfalls and the need to buy in extra feed this winter, a silage expert is urging.

A

ccording to Derek Nelson, product manager for Ecosyl, although improved weather conditions in the run up to harvest did help grass growth, this year’s first cut grass silage yields still appear to be light. In addition, he says sugar levels may be down in areas where sunlight levels were low. “Now that first cut is harvested, make sure you assess the quantity and quality of what you have in the clamp,” urges Mr Nelson. “Low-yielding first cuts will mean farmers have to rely more heavily on feeding later silage cuts this winter. For example, second cut may need to be fed to milking cows, and not just to youngstock. So getting good yields of later cuts will be particularly important. “Alternatively, where harvesting of first cut silage was delayed in an effort to boost yield, that could have led to reduced quality, since digestibility falls by 0.5% per day after heading. So farmers may need to concentrate on maximising the quality of future cuts as well.” Typically, Mr Nelson says digestibility already tends to be lower in second cut silage than first cut – and a reduction of 3.6 D units will require an extra 1.5 kg of concentrate to be fed to a dairy cow per day. And although brighter growing conditions mean sugars are normally

higher in second cut, he says the downside is that the higher UV light levels tend to kill off naturally-occurring bacteria on grass, including beneficial ones that carry out fermentation. “To maximise the quantity and quality of second and subsequent silage cuts, it will be important to follow the same best practice techniques as when producing first cut,” Mr Nelson adds. “For example, these include cutting at the correct time, avoiding excess wilting, good clamp management with effective sealing, and maximising the numbers of beneficial bacteria available for fermentation by using a proven silage inoculant. By improving fermentation efficiency, a quality lactic acid bacteria inoculant can reduce dry matter losses – with around 95% dry matter recovery achieved in grass silage trials. “But it can also boost quality – with digestibility improved by an average of 3 D units in trials compared with untreated silage. What is also relevant is that the largest digestibility benefits were seen with lower digestibility crops and at higher dry matter levels, he adds, a category that second cut is likely to fall into. In addition, Mr Nelson urges farmers to be careful with the cutting date of second cut, since it goes to head much quicker than first cut, which will reduce digestibility. For each 1% fall in digestibility, he says milk yield decreases by 0.37 litres per cow per day.

Increased threat of husk in adult cows and unprotected youngstock Outbreaks of husk (lungworm) in adult beef and dairy cattle, as well as youngstock, are likely to occur across the UK in the coming weeks and months

R

ecent warm weather followed by rainfall have provided the perfect conditions for lungworm larvae to migrate from dung pats to grass. Sudden outbreaks could be severe and, if the early signs of infection are not identified quickly, significant production losses could occur, including death in the worst cases, warns Merial Animal Health’s Veterinary Adviser Sioned Timothy. Whilst youngstock are traditionally thought to be more susceptible to lungworm infection and associated respiratory disease, there is an increasing trend for adult cattle to be affected. Immunity to lungworm is short-lived, and if natural boosting through low-level exposure to larvae does not occur, animals may be rendered susceptible to disease when the number of larvae present on the pasture increases. However, even immune animals can succumb to disease in the face of high larval challenge. Losses of up to £137 per animal can be attributed to lungworm infections and include additional costs and loss of income resulting from reduced milk production, disposal of dead animals, reduced fertility, laboratory diagnosis and treatment costs1. Even after recovery, lung damage can leave animals susceptible to secondary infections and affect long term productivity. “The problem for farmers, and vets, is that lungworm can be difficult to diagnose at an early stage and may not be spotted until a full-blown outbreak occurs,” says Ms Timothy. “The initial signs of coughing can be confused with other respiratory diseases such as Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR), particularly in older cattle, but it’s important not to overlook the risk of lungworm in cattle of all ages as delays in treatment can hit productivity hard. Severe outbreaks can even result in the loss of individual animals.” A rapid loss of condition and sudden milk drop in lactating animals are often observed during the acute stages of disease. Animals have a deep harsh cough during activity which progresses to coughing at rest, with laboured breathing. Severely affected cattle will typically stand with neck and head extended in the ‘air hunger’ position. Dairy

cows may be observed resting more often and drinking and eating less than normal. Lungworm should always be considered as a potential cause of coughing in cattle at grass. Farmers should not wait until the whole herd is unwell, but seek advice early in the course of disease to minimise the longer term impact. Vaccinating youngstock and adult cows before spring turnout is an effective method of preventing clinical disease. However, this immunity may wane as the grazing season progresses resulting in late-summer outbreaks when animals experience a high challenge from infective pastures. In young cattle, lungworm control will also be achieved through the use of strategic worming programmes implemented primarily to control gastro-intestinal parasites such as gutworm (Ostertagia ostertagii). When using early-season parasite control with products such as Ivomec Classic (ivermectin) after turnout, additional treatments may also be needed later in the grazing season and farmers must remain alert for signs of disease. “In adults a targeted approach is often used, with wormer treatments admin-

istered in response to the early signs of disease,” suggests Ms Timothy. “Vigilance is required for this approach to be effective and ensure cattle are treated before outbreaks of severe disease and associated lung damage occur. “Cattle should be treated as soon as possible with a suitable anthelmintic, ideally one which has prolonged activity against reinfection to allow lungs time to recover. It’s vital that the whole herd is treated as some infected animals will not show obvious clinical signs but will still suffer from impaired performance.” Merial’s Ivomec® Classic (ivermectin) and Eprinex® (eprinomectin) wormers can be used as part of a programme for lungworm control and for treating outbreaks. The active ingredients prevent reinfection for up to 28 days after treatment. Ivomec Classic injection or pour-on is suitable for use in youngstock and adult beef cattle while Eprinex has zero milk withhold and offers fast and effective control of lungworm in adult dairy cows. In severe cases, farmers should consult their vet to discuss supportive treatment options to relieve pain, manage inflammation and treat any secondary infections.

Animax Veterinary technology

A

nimax launches first sheep bolus with highest trace elements levels

Three of the most important trace elements for sheep can now be delivered in a single bolus thanks to a new product developed by leading UK bolus technology company, Animax Ltd. Tracesure 3-in-1 Sheep & Lamb is the latest addition to Animax’s range of boluses. The company’s veterinary director, Dr Elizabeth Berry, says the product is not only suitable for maintaining normal health, vitality and fertility of adult sheep and rams but can be used on replacement ewe lambs or ram lambs. “Cobalt, selenium and iodine can be given in this combined bolus which has 185mg of cobalt, 100mg of selenium and 660mg of iodine, higher levels than any other bolus on the market!’’ Dr Berry explains. The need for supplementation because of lack of these elements in the diet can be common and necessary with variables including soil type, level of rainfall, grass varieties, forage type and grassland management. Dr Berry says pregnant and growing sheep have a higher need for these trace elements. “They may not obtain enough from their normal diet,’’ she warns. “Tracesure 3-in-1 Sheep & Lamb contains optimum amounts to cover demands during growth, pregnancy and lactation and will provide these for a period of approximately six months.’’

At Troedyrharn, Brecon, fat lamb producer Rob Stephens says the benefits of the bolus is visual and important for flock condition – it is that daily release; he can see the advantages by looking at his flock.

There is also the added advantage that 4g of copper oxide is contained in Tracesure Sheep Traffic Lights, a separate capsule for supplementation in cases of low copper in the diet.

He fattens 1500 store lambs annually. “We buy lean lambs but we don’t quite know their history so we bolus them, it does a phenomenal job.’’

The newly-launched Tracesure 3-in-1 Sheep & Lamb is generating strong sales. Dr Berry says in addition to optimum trace element supplementation, labour efficiency is a key attraction.

He boluses ewes at tupping and at scanning, with the benefit of the application at scanning passing to lambs in the womb and later, through their mother’s milk.

“One bolus, utilising Animax’s unique leaching bolus technology, does the job.’’

Suzuki GB in Partnership with BASC Suzuki GB is pleased to announce its new exclusive partnership with BASC – the British Association for Shooting and Conservation.

A

s a result of the partnership, BASC members can exclusively benefit from 10% discount on selected Suzuki ATVs when purchased through an Authorised Suzuki ATV Dealer. Most shoots can benefit from the use of an ATV as powerful and comfortable transport, which allows the rider to fit through small pathways and passageways that a 4x4 vehicle could not. Suzuki’s range of ATVs can also carry heavy loads of equipment on the front and rear racks, as well as tow what you need. Suzuki’s independent suspension makes riding comfortable and stable, and the selectable 2 and 4 wheel drive options make the already fuel efficient ATVs even better. Nick Glazebrook, BASC’s head of business development, said: “This is a fantastic extension to our long-running partnership with Suzuki. ATVs are infinitely useful and this scheme should prove to be yet another popular benefit with BASC members.”

In addition, BASC are also able to offer other benefits including discounted off-road ATV driver training through their AA Drivetech packaging, and comprehensive ATV insurance provided by Aim Risk Services. Head of ATV GB, George Cheeseman commented: “We are incredibly proud of this new partnership and the 10% discount is just the start of the support that we hope to provide going forward. We understand that BASC members are passionate about their way of life, and we are looking forward to supporting them at their Game events and fairs in the future. So look out for some exciting competitions with great prizes coming soon!”

Kverneland to Introduce Smaller U-Drill at Tillage-Live

F

ollowing Kverneland’s successful introduction of the 6m hydraulic folding U-Drill, the firm has added 3m and 4m rigid frame versions to the range – and a 3m model will be introduced at Tillage-Live on September 14. Designed to maintain even sowing depths at high forward speeds of up to 18kph, these smaller models of U-Drill also feature electrically driven seed metering, and are available in grain only, and combined grain/fertiliser versions – the latter are badged U-Drill Plus.

Kverneland U-Drill 3000 Plus models also benefit from a hopper that is divided lengthways, with easily accessible metering units located on either side of the hopper. The 3m U-Drill 3000 and 4m U-Drill 4000 models offer six working zones including a front-mounted 800mm packer, two rows of 450mm conical discs, an offset wheel packer, CD coulters with a 12.5cm row spacing and up to 100kg of coulter pressure, backed up by a choice of following harrow. The U-Drill 3000 is priced from £47,500. In addition to the two smaller models,

the 6m U-drill 6000 is now available in Plus specification. New control options also include fully programmable headland management, and GEOcontrol – the latter for variable rate seeding and section control.

New Machines Extend KUHN’s Verge and Multi-Purpose Shredder Ranges KUHN Farm Machinery has added three new machines to its range of grassland and roadside shredders, with a 2.4 metre model added to its BP series of landscape maintenance shredders and two new offset verge shredders.

B

P 24: multi-purpose rotary shredder – The BP 24 extends the range of multi-purpose shredders and joins the existing BP 28 (2.79m working width) and BP 30 (3.03m working width) machines. Kuhn Shredder 2 The BP range is designed for shredding all kinds of grassy areas, from field borders and road verges to pastures, and is fitted with a central fixed linkage system to keep costs down (the larger BP 28 and BP 30 are available with a hydraulic sideways shifting linkage). As with all machines in the BP range, the casing of the BP 24 is constructed from robust, 6mm thick metal with 8mm sidewalls. Two counter-blades (one notched and one smooth) are welded to the casing. The BP’s shredding rotor is constructed from 10mm thick metal and is fitted with eight rows of cutting tools: KUHN’s grass cutting hammer knives are fitted as standard, but the BP can also be fitted with optional heavy hammers or articulated knives for heavier work. The cutting tools are arranged in a helical pattern to give a clean cutting action and to produce perfect residue suction and spread. The rotor is driven by four high-capacity XPB V-belts and

operates at either 540 or 1,000 rpm. A 220mm self-cleaning roller, with either fixed or removable ends, controls cutting height, and is positioned very close to the cutting rotor for improved ground following. A pair of pivoting wheels to the rear of the shredder casing provide additional support. Support skids can be attached to the sides of the casing for extra protection. TBE 19 and TBE 22: offset verge shredders – The TBE 10 series is new to KUHN’s range of offset verge shredders and consists of two machines: the TBE 19 (1.79m working width) and the TBE 22 (2.14m working width). The new machines can be used with tractors in the 60 to 110hp range and are designed for carrying out all types of farm maintenance and verge shredding duties. Kuhn shredder 4 Both machines use a robust linkage system which incorporates a 100mm by 100mm cross- section frame constructed from 8mm thick metal, and a category 2 anti-rotation drawbar linkage. The TBE range uses a doubleacting cylinder for offset adjustments and a single-acting cylinder for working in a vertical position. Working angles range from -65o to +90o. Both shredders have an offset range

of 695mm allowing the machines to be used directly behind the tractor or to one side. Rearward adjustment can be up to 1,850mm. The offset cutting arm boasts dimensions of 140mm by 60mm and is fitted with anti-rotation arm pins mounted on hollow seal rings. The arm’s pivot pins are also mounted on hollow seal rings. Shredding is carried out by a 425mm diameter rotor which can be equipped with KUHN’s heavy hammer or universal cutting knives. Two counter knives are also welded to the shredders casing. The cutting rotor is driven by either three of four high capacity belts which sit on wide diameter pulleys for optimum power transfer. A standard transmission or constant-velocity option can be specified: both are protected by a nonstop mechanical safety system. Ground following is controlled by a 168mm fixed end roller, with long-life Hardox skids bolted to the base of the housing.

Italian artist creates giant Olympics tribute with his tractor

J

ust four days before the Olympic Games' opening ceremony in Rio de Janeiro, an Italian "land artist" has used his tractor to create a huge work of art depicting the Brazilian city's Christ the Redeemer statue. Dario Gambarin, from Verona in northern Italy, used the 40-year-old tractor to carve up 47,000 square metres of field in Castagnaro. The image is a total of 180 metres in length, five times longer than the actual statue, and Christ is shown holding the five Olympic rings. has produced other notable works with his tractor, including portraits of former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela, US President Barack Obama and Pope Francis.

JCB DONATION BOOSTS LIFE SAVING EQUIPMENT CAMPAIGN

A

£500 donation by JCB has helped to fund vital life-saving equipment for a Staffordshire Moorlands community.

The money is being used by Cotton Parish Council to buy a brand new publicly-accessible defibrillator. The machines are used to give a high-energy electric shock to someone suffering from a cardiac arrest. They can restore a more stable heart rhythm and be essential in saving somebody’s life. Other local businesses have also contributed to the cause and, once purchased, the machine is set to be installed at The Cross Inn, in the village of Cauldon Low. Members of Cotton Parish Council visited JCB’s World Headquarters, at Rocester, where they were presented with a cheque for £500. Chairman of Cotton Parish Council Dave Cooper said: “We very much appreciate

this donation by JCB which will benefit everyone in our community. As a council we recognise the need for one of these machines. We have a fair number of elderly residents in the parish and therefore it makes sense to have a defibrillator in place.

“We do have a very good team of First Responders in the Staffordshire Moorlands but having one of the machines to hand could provide immediate help and give a victim a fighting chance. If it just saves one person’s life then the defibrillator will be worth it.”

Set The Ground Speed You Need. We’ll Do The Rest. The Diesel Saver™ Automatic Productivity Management system takes the guesswork out of setting the right gear/rpm combination.

I

t does the job for you. Wet spots and hills shouldn’t affect your fuel economy. Diesel Saver keeps you moving at the same speed and gives you up to 25 percent improvement in fuel economy and power performance through changing field conditions. No one else offers a more effective solution. Or a simpler one. Work Longer And Stronger With The Four-Way Suspended Cab. The simple suspension in a Case IH Magnum cab stabilizes front-to-back and up-anddown motions, which gives you a smoother ride across the field and keeps you from bouncing around while working on uneven terrain. It frees you up to focus on the job and provides you with more control over your tractor — without the fatigue and soreness that comes at the end of a long shift. The

Newest Operating Controls Built The Way Producers Wanted. We relied on extensive input from producers to design the new MultiControl Armrest console in our Magnum tractors. Key functions are at your fingertips. And the console includes the largest touchscreen in the industry, the AFS Pro 700. Seamlessly control autoguidance functions, hydraulic flow and other adjustments. For even easier use, the touchscreen can be customized to display the operating information most important to you. Work with thirdparty implements and move the console between Case IH equipment, too. All this functionality from one screen. Because that’s the way you wanted it. Sometimes You Need To Work More Than Just All Day. It’s unavoidable. Circumstances often require you work in

28 | Working Farmer | www.workingfarmer.co.uk

darkness. Magnum tractors offer 360-degree visibility with bright HID lights, so you can always see around the tractor and implements. You can even see the outside row units of your largest planter, which means you can get out and make an adjustment, fuel up or do whatever you need on those long days that require everything you have. More Productivity. Less Fuel. Case IH’s new Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology

lowers emissions while improving engine horsepower capability, engine responsiveness, fuel economy and engine reliability. It’s an innovative approach created from listening to farmers who asked for a way to meet more exacting government standards without sacrificing production. And it makes SCR the superior solution for engines over 100 horsepower.

challenging and successful season for the New Holland prototype T6.180 Methane Power tractor

Back from the positive field tests in Italy, Spain and in the United Kingdom, the innovative 100% methane powered New Holland prototype tractor has been tested at the La Bellotta farm located near Turin by German customers as well as by the young farmers recently awarded in Brussels New Holland’s second generation T6.180 Methane Power tractor, which is a key element of New Holland Agriculture's Clean Energy Leader strategy - launched 10 years ago to increase farming efficiency and sustainability - can be powered with methane or biomethane, and has been previewed and tested by some customers on July 14 at the La Bellotta farm, located near Turin, which is the first pilot Energy Independent Farm. Among those to experience first hand the operative potentialities and sustainable qualities of the New Holland methane powered tractor were a German customer of the brand, who is the owner of a farm and operator of a biogas plant, and the President of the German association of biogas plants, who has also been a pioneer in biomethane fuelling stations in Germany. They were joined by three young farmers who were recently awarded in Brussels for their innovative and sustainable projects during the Third

European Congress of Young Farmers, sponsored by New Holland: Alicia Pardo Garcia from Spain, who operates a horse farm and produces organic mare's milk near Madrid, Henrique Corrêa Silvestre Ferreira from Portugal, who produces high quality seedless table grapes in the region of Alentejo, and Petko Simeonov from Bulgaria who produces organic honey near Sofia. Fitted with 9 tanks able to hold approx. 300 litres (52 kg) of methane and a 6 cylinder, 179 HP max power engine, the New Holland T6.180 Methane Power tractor was equipped with a ripper. These tests reconfirmed the positive feedback received from testing in Italy, Spain and in the United Kingdom, which not only demonstrate the operational capacities of the tractor but also its qualities in fuel cost savings of 25 to 40% in comparison to diesel, and its sustainability with 80% less polluting emissions if compared to the equivalent diesel model. If bio-methane is used, the tractor’s global carbon

30 | Working Farmer | www.workingfarmer.co.uk

impact is virtually zero. In Italy the T6 Methane Power was tested with good results by the Maccarese farm near Rome to roll the fields before and after seeding. In Spain, the tractor worked at the grape and olive producer Bodegas Torres, which has been committed to using alternative energies and reducing polluting emissions since 2008. In the United Kingdom, the prototype was tested successfully by Wyke Farms in Somerset, which is one of the country’s biggest Cheddar cheese producers and owner of a biogas plant, and by Worthy Farm, home to the famous Glastonbury music festival. Overall, the tractor has clocked more than 100 hours of operation performing different activities: cultivation, road transport and work with a front loader. Testing of the New Holland T6.180 Methane Power will continue at La Bellotta during July and August. In September the prototype will tour other European markets.

SsangYong

Vehiucles

The Tivoli XLV An extended body model of the already popular SsangYong Tivoli compact SUV, is now on sale from £18,250 or just £198 per month on PCP*.

T

he SUV market has seen rapid growth and our new Tivoli launched last year is already the best-selling model launched by SsangYong,” said Paul Williams, CEO of SsangYong Motor UK. “Some 100,000 have now been sold around the world. Tivoli has been praised universally for meeting a number of customer requirements, not least its ability to carry five adults in comfort, and for having one of the largest boot capacities in its class. Now SsangYong has gone a step further by launching an extended car to provide even more carrying capacity and practicality, and we believe that this will enable us to compete with SUVs such as the Nissan Qashqai, but also station wagon style cars like the MINI Clubman, Skoda Yeti & Roomster and other small estates.” Prices start from just £18,250 for the Tivoli XLV 1.6 diesel manual 2WD – that’s just £1,000 more than for the equivalent Tivoli ELX - £19,250 with automatic transmission, £19,500 for theTivoli XLV 1.6 diesel manual 4x4, and £20,500 for the 4x4 with automatic. Sharing the same platform and 2,600mm wheelbase as the Tivoli, the XLV features a lengthened body from behind the C pillar, an increase of 238mm over the standard car, expanding the load capacity to a huge 720 cubic litres of space. Meanwhile, the styling cues that distinguish Tivoli are retained, including its harmoniously fused SUV body design, sports coupé look and floating roofline. Designed to offer a multi-role, multi-func-

tion solution to a wide range of customers, Tivoli XLV provides just the versatility needed to meet individual lifestyles: family car for lugging baby buggies and cots for small children, bikes and golf clubs for the sports-minded, and materials or business equipment during the working week. Passenger safety has been a top priority for this car, and comes with seven airbags including front, side and curtain airbags plus a driver’s knee airbag, multi-function ESP (Electronic Stability Program), Active Rollover Protection, Brake Assist, Hill Start Assist and ESS (Emergency Stop Signal), a tyre pressure monitoring system and a warning reminder on all five seat belt positions. Tivoli XLV is offered with a Euro 6 compliant 1.6 litre diesel engine, and matched with the option of a 6-speed manual transmission or 6-speed Aisin automatic, two-wheel drive or 4x4. The newly developed 1.6 litre e-XDi160 diesel engine produces 115ps/3,400-4,000rpm max power with 300Nm/1,500-2,500rpm, and delivers a smooth, progressive and powerful driving experience. It also features a fifth generation E-VGT turbocharger which maximises performance especially in the mid-low speed range so it is fun and responsive to drive. With manual transmission there’s also ISG (stop/start) to meet the demand for low CO2 emission levels. The 1.6 litre diesel engine achieves a CO2 emission level of just 117g/km (two-wheel drive, manual transmission with Stop/Start), and economy of up to 62.8mpg on the Combined cycle. Intelligent four-wheel drive

36 | Working Farmer | www.workingfarmer.co.uk

The SsangYong DNA is all about 4x4, and the Tivoli XLV draws on this by offering the option of an intelligent 4-wheel drive system. The electronically controlled on-demand system distributes power to front and rear drive shafts, and automatically adjusts to the road surface and driving conditions to optimise performance. In normal driving, the drive system distributes all power to the front wheels to enhance fuel efficiency, and automatically adapts to 4-wheel drive in snow or wet slippery conditions, by diverting power to the rear wheels as well to ensure driving stability. For increased stability and reassurance, particularly when driving on a hill or slope, the 4-wheel drive operates with Hill Start Assist which helps by delivering power to any wheels that are spinning. And for optimised braking performance, ESP and ABS also control the 4x4 system for greater safety. With a 167mm ground clearance, approach angle of 20.0 degrees, 20.8 degree departure angle, and 17.0 degree ramp angle, a highly competent off-road capability is assured.Comprehensively equipped, the Tivoli XLV features digital-dual zone automatic air conditioning, an infotainment system with RDS radio, 7” high-resolution touch screen, USB/AUX port, iPod & Bluetooth connectivity, Tom-Tom navigation and rear view camera. There is cruise control, parking sensors front and rear, rain sensing wipers, automatic headlight activation and stylish roof rails. *Tivoli XLV PCPs PCPs are available on all Tivoli XLV models. Option 1 - Pay final payment & retain the car

Option 2 - Return the car Option 3 - Trade in against a new SsangYong Finance offers are available through participating SsangYong dealers, subject to status and open to applicants age 18 and over. Available from GMAC UK Plc. to be totally transparent and give customers complete peace of mind, ‘limitless’ means just that: not a maximum mileage condition that some brands impose in their small print. All the major mechanical components are covered including wheel bearings, suspension joints and bushes, steering joints, shock absorbers and even the audio system. Wearable components such as clutch discs and brake friction materials which could have their life reduced by poor driving are covered for one year or 12,500 miles, and the battery and paintwork for three years.

Made in Korea SsangYong cars are manufactured in South Korea by SsangYong Motor, which is 73 per cent owned by the Indian engineering conglomerate Mahindra & Mahindra, and imported into the UK by SsangYong Motor UK. Established in 1954 it is Korea’s oldest vehicle manufacturer and only 4x4 and SUV specialist producer. There are currently some 60 SsangYong dealers covering England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, with new locations being added to the network all the time.

World premiere of the ŠKODA KODIAQ set for 1 September 2016, in Berlin

A

head of its world premiere on 1 September in Berlin, ŠKODA has revealed images of the KODIAQ, its new, large SUV model. They give an impression of how ŠKODA will transfer the brand’s new expressive design language into the SUV segment. The ŠKODA KODIAQ aims to impress: the wide, three-dimensional radiator grille gives the KODIAQ a striking presence. In combination with the narrow, raked headlights, which are available with full-LED technology for the first time, the brand’s first large SUV will be instantly recognisable on the road. The side and rear views are also sharp: the doors are athletically shaped and the tailgate is expressively sculptured. The rear lights, with LED technology as standard, shine in the typical ŠKODA C-shape.

As one would expect from a ŠKODA, the KODIAQ offers an exceptional amount of space, with a capacity of 720 to 2,065 litres (with the rear seats folded down), offering the largest boot within its class. For first time ever, ŠKODA will offer a seven seat option. Using the position of the seats and angle adjustment, KODIAQ can be adapted to offer a wide range of seating and loading solutions. With the front passenger seat down, the car can transport items up to 2.9 metres long.

range: When towing, the system takes over steering when reversing slowly. Additionally, while reversing, the new Manoeuvre Assist will brake as soon as an obstacle is detected behind the vehicle.

The latest driver assistance systems ensure improved safety and comfort. Area View, using surround-view cameras with wide-angle lenses at the front and the rear as well as in the wing mirrors, displays various views of the car’s immediate surroundings on the in-car monitor. These include a virtual top-down view and 180-degree pictures from the areas to the front and rear. Tow Assist is also new to the

The centrepiece of the Care Connect services is the emergency call following an accident: if an airbag is activated, a so-called Emergency Call (e-Call) automatically connects to an emergency call centre.

The ŠKODA Connect mobile online services are another innovation. They are divided into two categories: the Infotainment Online services ensure more information and navigation in real time, and the Care Connect services provide remote access as well as assistance.

The ŠKODA KODIAQ will celebrate its world premiere on 1stSeptember 2016, in Berlin.
