Teaching Character in Early Childhood Education Considering what we know about how early experiences shape a child’s life, why isn’t there more of an emphasis on character development in the current discussions and debates on early childhood education? How do we develop a caring environment for our youngest children? How do we encourage the development of good character and empathy before they can even talk in full sentences? Gina Siebe, Director of the Clayton Early Childhood Center and former principal of NSOC Bayless Elementary, offers some words of wisdom for early childhood educators looking to incorporate character education and empathy development into their classrooms. Here are some ways you can develop character education in your youngest students: • Introduce young children to core ethical values through role playing and discuss solutions to problems during class meetings. • Visuals are particularly important to young children as reminders of behavior expectations or step by step instructions to complete a task. Use photographs or model facial expressions and discuss the emotion each expression indicates. • Catch children doing the right thing. Teachers bring attention to specific positive behaviors observed which encourages others to emulate those behaviors. • Have young children reflect on core ethical values through drawing • Teach children to model positive behaviors for others and participate in reciprocal teaching when coaching peers on behavior expectations. • Encourage children to notice inequities as they learn about the world around them. They have great interests in improving the quality of life for others which lends itself well to service learning. • Focus on restorative justice strategies. Children are taught to talk out their issues with one another often using the teacher as a coach. When toddlers bite as a form of communication, they are given an ice pack to hold on the injured child. This opportunity to soothe and comfort instills empathy for others and gives the toddler or “biter” the chance to restore his/ her relationship with the injured child.

"All children have within them the potential to be great kids. It is our job to create a great world where this potential can flourish."

Magical Sensory Play with Infants and Toddlers-Sensory experiences tell us who we are and where we are. The accumulation of images seen and heard, tasted, touched and smelled build a complex image of surroundings in a small child’s mind. The senses constantly guide, stimulate, and reward the actions of the child. Senses and developmental skills cooperate. Neither can function without the other. Workshop participants will learn the many ways that sensory play promotes growth in all the developmental domains- cognitive, physical, social-emotional- and how they can use sensory experiences to support early learning for infants and toddlers. (Mallory Blanchard; CCDF: 13, 20; AL Pathways: CGD, LEE; DHR: CD, LD; CDA: 2, 8; Basic Training Level; 2 hours/0.2 CEUs; Age Group: Infants/Toddlers) #5547 - 2/8/2017; 6pm - 8pm; GRECS Training Room, Mobile Music & Young Minds: Circle Time Songs that Help Children Reach Developmental Milestones- Participants will learn creative new ways to work towards developmental milestones in the areas of speech, fine motor skills, and social/emotional development as they lead inclusive and engaging movement & music activities. Pulleys, Levers, and Wheels - Oh My! (APT) This training will encourage children to explore how wheels help cars move, how the flag goes up the flag pole and how the see saw on the playground works. These simple machines help us to move and manipulate objects. Simple tools serve as a foundation for understanding science, technology, engineering, and math (“STEM”) concepts. Through observation and experimentation children (and teachers) will develop an understanding of how simple tools make life easier and fun – in many ways! And all of this with some help from a few favorite PBS Kids programs. (Tiffany Armstrong; CCDF: 13; AL Pathways: LEE; DHR: QCCL; CDA: 2,3; Intermediate Training Level; 2 hours/0.2 CEUs; Age Group: Preschool) #5548-2/9/2017; 6:00pm-8:00pm; GRECS Training Room, Mobile

i

Reading Readiness: Building Children’s Vocabulary-Reading research continues to find that children’s vocabulary knowledge is directly related to their reading comprehension. And, children’s success in school and beyond depends greatly upon their ability to read with comprehension. (Catherine Kreger; AL Pathways: CGD, LEE; DHR:CD, LD; CDA: 2, 8; Advanced Training Level; 2 hours/0.2 CEUs; Age Group: Preschool, School Age) #5551 - 2/13/2017; 5:00pm - 7:00pm; GRECS Training Room, Mobile

Little Children, Big Challenges: Tips for Parents & Caregivers Everyday challenges are part of life and happen all the time. Providing your love and support is the most important step in helping your little one develop the confidence to overcome anything he faces. Here are some tips & strategies from Sesame Street’s Little Children, Big Challenges initiative to help you and the young children in your care navigate challenges and build lifelong skills for resilience. Helping Children Cope with Big Feelings - Encourage your child to share her feelings, and comfort her with your words and actions. • Help your child to name her feelings. Ask questions to help her open up. You might notice her frowning and say, “I see that you’re frowning. Did something happen today that made you feel sad?” • Build your child’s sense of security by letting her know you’re thinking about her. You might leave a note in her lunchbox or give her two kisses and a hug at bedtime each night Helping Your Child to Overcome Mistakes - Making mistakes will be less upsetting as a child learns to control her emotions. • Remind your child that the way to get better at something is to practice doing it. Remind her of other things she’s gotten good at because she practiced. • Be a role model for your child, and let her know that everyone makes mistakes! When you confront your own mistakes, try to be positive and think about a plan to try again. Let her hear you say aloud, “First I’ll do this, and then I’ll do…” © 2013 Sesame Workshop.
