9th Grade Gives Back!
BRONX PREPARATORY CHARTER SCHOOL COLLEGE OFFICE
By BPCO th
9by BPCO grade had a very busy and rewarding Spring Trip week this year. They received life-saving CPR, AED & first aid training, volunteered at various community centers, parks & food pantries and visited Pinegrove Ranch where most students engaged in activities such as horseback riding, archery & rock climbing for the first time. The goals of these trips are to
Expose and challenge students through a variety of experiences Empower and educate them on how to be active members of their communities Develop a sense of accomplishment through helping and caring for others Inspire students to do more!
Bronx Prep’s 7 C’s + 1 were heavily interwoven into the objectives of these trips with a strong focus on th Community and Caring. 9 grade surpassed all expectations and received the following feedback from their community service hosts. It was wonderful. The seniors were so impressed with how polite and wellbehaved the kids are. They enjoyed interacting with them. I hope the students felt the same. - Moshulu Montefiore Community Center
I can report that your group did quite well and they seemed to be happily engaged. Thank you for sending the students to volunteer. - Harlem Stock & Shop I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation too for all the volunteer kids and Ms. Flores, the Chaperone, for offering their time yesterday to help us! And I'm glad to hear that they learned something too! Thank you! -Jewish Board of Family & Children’s Services Student volunteers were great company for the classrooms and I hope they enjoyed their time as well! Thank you for setting up this opportunity with us and thank you to the student volunteers. -Kingsbridge Heights Community Center Everything went very well both days… We actually got a lot done and removed a lot of vines before they had the chance to start growing this spring. -Friends of Van Cortlandt Park
When asked if community service placements were found to be worthwhile, Bronx Prep chaperones replied, “Yes. I think it is really important that both the boys and girls are exposed to nurturing and role model experiences in settings like this. The community center was very welcoming and offered the appropriate amount of challenge and responsibility for the students. I think having smaller groups here really helped a lot. -Kingsbridge Heights Community Center Head Start Program Another teacher wrote, “Today was Amazing. I witnessed, Akisha Kamara, Chris Mata, Crismary Mateo, Josmer Marte, Saylin Gomez, and Jural Morton use the 7C's + 1. I saw our mission in action. They worked together to help the customers with their shopping. They used communication as a team effectively. Chris was a translator for the customers. Akisha and Jural used their Spanish language vocabulary to communicate and did a great job. Everyone kept their cool when customers got a little "crazy" and above all did it with a smile”. -Foodbank NYC Harlem Stock & Shop th
I was able to explain the planned craft project to your students and they did an excellent job leading the activity with the children. -New York Cares
This year 79% of our 9 graders participated in community service and 90% received CPR, AED and first aid certification. We anticipate even th higher numbers for next year’s 9 grade and we will continue to provide opportunities for students to utilize what they’ve learned and become more active members of their communities.

Spring Trips 2014
10th GRADE at the TOP By BPCO
STUDENTS TACKLE HIGH ROPES ACTIVITY th
This spring our 10 grade students went to Camp Ramapo in Rhinebeck, New York for a three day adventure. Our students will progress through four phases of “readiness” during their high school years. Each year we present themes through foundational words for character building based on our core values, called the 7C’s +1 of Bronx Prep;
curiosity, commitment, competence, character, confidence, caring, community, and communication.
BRONX PREPARATORY CHARTER SCHOOL
The purpose of our trip to Ramapo was to give our students an opportunity to practice teamwork, build confidence, and exercise mental toughness (endurance). Here’s what some of the staff at Camp Ramapo had to say about our students and their experience: “This experience was a great one for me. The students were extremely mature, poised and worked excellently with each other. Their open-mindedness and ability to reflect made the retreat one I won't forget. The whole trip was a highlight, but one thing they said really resonated with me. They advised me that even though they've known each other for 6 years, they learned more about each other during their 48 hours with us then the time prior. The individuals in my group were Bernice, Faranah, Christine, Melony, Elizabeth, Malik, Michael, and Chris. Dr. Coven and Ms. Teperman were the chaperones. The latter had the same attitude as the students which helped tremendously.” Cliff
“My name is Marcus and I was a small group facilitator for Bronx Prep last week. I had a great group of students with me, about 11. One of the things I really liked seeing during our time together was so many of the teens taking on different leadership roles. From the quieter ones to the more outspoken ones, all took on
some form of leadership during their time here. Because we had three days together as a small group, I also got to see the team grow over time. At the beginning there was a lot of arguing and communication was a struggle with the group because of lack of listening and trusting each other as well as putting

each other down. After the first day, this was not a problem anymore. The team was working much better together and started trusting and supporting one another. During high ropes and low ropes I really saw the team working as one; cheering each other on, challenging each other, and really stepping out of their comfort zone. By end of their time here, my team looked as if they had been together much longer than three days. I feel that they went back to Bronx Prep as friends and with the skills to better their community. I hope this is helpful! I really
6 enjoyed my time with your school and hope you find a way to come back up again!” - Marcus “From what I saw the students were on the whole very "into" the program, enthusiastic about the challenges we presented, and were fully willing and able to help each other through ups and downs. The low and high ropes challenges were highlights for many, as was the "Into the Wild" series of outdoor activities built around hypothetical survival skill scenarios.” –Jay Jasper

refreshing.” Thank you BP staff and 10 graders for a job well done!
Our lead chaperone, Ms. Teperman, said, “hearing the students encouraging and supporting one another during the high ropes challenge…was

11 Grade College Trips By BPCO
Before planning spring 2014 college visits, 11th grade students had the opportunity to vote on which colleges they wanted to visit. Students also met with College Office counselors to share their ideas and views about how they think college visits would best support their needs and goals prior to becoming seniors. As a result, the spring college trips this year were a total success.
One of the key differences between the spring trips and previous fall trips was that spring college trips were focused primarily on 11th grade students and based on their academic profiles. The chaperones on the trips also graded students daily in areas of punctuality, attire, conduct, participation and college content knowledge using a grading rubric. The rubric grades ranged from zero, being totally unacceptable, to 3 being excellent. Most students’ scores ranged from 10-15 with 15 being the highest score.
“Being able to visit top-tier schools such as Bates was enlightening, both for the students and myself. We have a lot of work to do to prepare our students for success at that level, and seeing the end helps us all know where to begin - and how much harder to push!” -Jonthon Coulson, AP English Teacher & Chaperone
The colleges that each group visited were schools that matched the students’ academic profiles. These schools also have good financial aid programs according to the website BigFuture.org (a College Board Website). After spring college trips, the students and staff filled out surveys about their experiences. Most of the students really enjoyed the trips saying that these colleges and universities are schools that they are going to consider applying to during the fall of their senior year. The staff felt the trips were organized and manageable.
Chijoke Chikazie an 11th grade student said “I like the SAT optional schools and financial aid” at some of the schools. Nasir Ross said at Holy Cross “I like the camaraderie between the students encouraged by the college through its programs.”
