The art club, Seymour Art, and the art department hosted Big A** Art Day September 1, 2010 at the Rasmussen Center. Three sessions were held during the day; from 8:1510 a.m., 10:15 a.m.-noon and 1-2:45 p.m. At 3 p.m. the work was hung in Rasmussen. Everyone was invited to gather at 6:30 p.m. for prizes and watch a showing of the movie “Art and Copy.” “I enjoyed the fact that you could get a little taste of everything the art department has to offer,” Brittny Pokorny, graphic design junior said. Maegan Simpson, graphic design senior, photographed the entire day. She loves taking pictures of art students. “They aren’t camera shy and understand the value of not posing for the camera,” Simpson

said.,“If they do strike a pose, they at least make it unique.” Big A** Art day had many different activities. Painting with Dennis Kaven, professor of art and design, during sessions one and two; peace, love, and type (digital media) with Cindy Fleagle, assistant professor of art, during sessions one and two; printmaking with Mary Jones, professor of art, during all three sessions; conceptual drawing with Aaron Tinder, associate professor of art and design, during sessions one and three; and image construction on 3-D objects with Josh Ryther, associate professor of art and design, during all three sessions. Pokorny, along with fellow students, helped Jones during session two by teaching students who were unfamiliar with printmaking. Simpson participated in the peace, love, and type ses-

sion. The project was to create a piece of art using little direction, then put it together with the other’s pieces to create a giant piece of art. Kaven said, “We actually had been thinking about this since last spring. We met a couple of times over the sum-

mer and before the students left last spring. We called in a bunch of the students to get their opinion of it, and asked if they would like to get a group of people to help us.” Seymour Art is a female persona created by a teacher in the art and design department

to help reach out to students on Facebook and get them more involved in activities such as Big A** Art Day. Simpson said, “I really enjoyed Big A** Art Day, it was a great way to spend a day hanging out with your friends and making awesome art.”

Ankeny Campus View Apartments offer off-campus independence Jessica Brewbaker STAFF WRITER

Campus View apartments in Ankeny offers students the independence of off-campus living with most of the benefits of living on campus. “I would definitely say that Campus View is the nicest residence hall that Grand View has had,” Katelyn Carlson, wellness and fitness management junior, said. “I really enjoy living at Campus View. It gives me the off campus feeling with the on campus benefits.” Some of those benefits include a fully-furnished apartment with a full kitchen and dishwasher, free cable, free wireless internet and a private bathroom for each student. The apartment building includes a fitness room that is al-

ways open, a game room, and lounge areas. Stephanie Audas, prenursing, said that she really likes living at Campus View. “The apartments are nice and cozy, I feel like I’m at home,” Audas said. “I wanted to be able to have my own space and live in a fully furnished apartment. I definitely think that choosing to live at Campus View was a good decision.” Jay Prescott, vice president of student affairs, said that Campus View was chosen after a lot of research. “We investigated what the amenities would be, what the location would be, what the site would provide, and what the cost would be and decided that pretty much in every area it was going to be a better option for our students,” Prescott

said. “Once we were able to see the space we decided that it would be a better option and our students would probably like it much better.” An e-mail was sent to returning students with the floor plans and amenities, and the student response was very positive according to Prescott. Prescott does not anticipate needing any outside housing for the next two years. Once the new student apartments are completed in July 2011, Prescott estimates that those apartments should not fill up until 2013. Having offcampus housing was the result of Grand View not being able to build to meet growing demand. “We had to find spaces to take care of our students until we actually have our new facilities,” Prescott said.
