Walk on the Wild Side Exhibition

Your story, our history – 125 years seen through a Jersey Evening Post lens

The wildlife in and around Jersey thrives in abundance, making Jersey such an interesting and attractive place in which both to live and visit. This exhibition and events, Walk on the Wild Side, portrays the wildlife in many mediums from some of Jersey’s favourite artists and some very talented new comers, with many being Genuine Jersey members. Exhibitors include; Anne Kelly, Pippa Barrow, Nick Parlett, Gary Stringfellow, Christine Witham, Anna Le Moine Gray, Rosemary Blackmore, From the Wood, Lisa Le Brocq, Simon Bossy, Zena Gavey and Mike Newman. Time: 10:00 – 17:30 Price: Free of charge Place: The Harbour Gallery, Le Boulevard, St. Brelade Web: www.theharbourgalleryjersey.com DAILY

Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore: A Life Defiant Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore challenged the boundaries of gender and sexual identity, campaigned against tyranny and resisted Nazi occupiers. They created some of the most startlingly original and enigmatic photographic images of the twentieth century. They were an extraordinary couple who lived, loved and worked together for more than 30 years. For the first time this exhibition examines their history of defiance, from the forming of their lesbian relationship in the early 1900s, through Cahun’s exploration of her self-image and multiple personalities in conservative post-war France, her anti-Fascists political protest of the 1930s, to the anti-Nazi resistance activities of the 1940s, this exhibition explores Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore: A Life Defiant. Time: 10:00 – 17:00 Price: Adult £9.30, Senior £8.25, Child/Student £5.15, Family Ticket £25.75 Place: Jersey Museum & Art Gallery, The Weighbridge, St Helier Tel: 01534 633300 Web: www.jerseyheritage.org

The Jersey Evening Post has been a daily read for many Islanders for 125 years. Through their visual storytelling, press photographs can tell remarkable stories, inspire discussion and reminiscence. For much of its history JEP photographers have documented Island life, following the daily activities of Islanders and recording the changing landscape. Echoing the structure of a modern newspaper, this exhibition will show highlights from the hundreds of thousands of photographs which have appeared over the year, from headline stories, news events, community features, entertainment and sport. Time: 10:00 – 17:00 Price: Adult £9.30, Senior £8.25, Child/Student £5.15, Family Ticket £25.75 Place: Jersey Museum & Art Gallery, The Weighbridge, St Helier Tel: 01534 633300 Web: www.jerseyheritage.org DAILY

Treasure : Uncovering the Hoard The world’s largest ever Celtic hoard was discovered in Jersey. Visitors to this exhibition will be able to watch conservators at work as they painstakingly take the hoard apart, cleaning and conserving the contents as they go. When it comes to buried wealth Jersey really is a Treasure Island. It has an extraordinary number of buried coin hoards. In comparison, Guernsey has no coin hoards yet discovered, but a wealth of warrior burials. This phenomenon will be investigated in this exhibition. Why did the Celts bury their wealth in Jersey but their dead in Guernsey?

Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore: A Life Defiant

Your story, our history – 125 years seen through a Jersey Evening Post lens

Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore challenged the boundaries of gender and sexual identity, campaigned against tyranny and resisted Nazi occupiers. Time: 10:00 – 17:00 Price: Adult £9.30, Senior £8.25, Child/Student £5.15, Family Ticket £25.75 Place: Jersey Museum & Art Gallery, The Weighbridge, St Helier Tel: 01534 633300 Web: www.jerseyheritage.org DAILY

70 Years of Liberation Take a fresh look at the Occupation Tapestry with new interactive touchscreens and audio-visual presentations that draw on the latest academic research about this fascinating part of Jersey’s history. How did people make acts of resistance against the Germans? Who were the victims of Nazi persecution? The Channel Islands hold the unique distinction of being the only part of Britain to be occupied by the Germans. But how did the experience of Islanders compare with that of other occupied countries in mainland Europe? Time: 10:00 – 17:00 Price: Adult £9.15, Senior £8.10, Child/Student £5.75, Family Ticket £26.45, Tapestry Gallery Only £4.50 Place: Occupation Tapestry Gallery, Maritime Museum, New North Quay, St Helier Tel: 01534 633300 Web: www.jerseyheritage.org

Time: 10:00 – 17:00 Price: Adult £9.30, Senior £8.25, Child/Student £5.15, Family Ticket £25.75 Place: JJersey Museum & Art Gallery, The Weighbridge, St Helier Tel: 01534 633300 Web: www.jerseyheritage.org DAILY

Time: 10:00 – 17:00 Price: Adult £9.30, Senior £8.25, Child/Student £5.15, Family Ticket £25.75 Place: Jersey Museum & Art Gallery, The Weighbridge, St Helier Tel: 01534 633300 Web: www.jerseyheritage.org

Enjoy Nature La Lande de Ouest Part of the dry coastal heathland lying above the cliffs along the greater part of the south-west coast. A designated Site of Special Interest (SSI) and rich in flora and fauna, this area is an important part of the island’s landscape, and biodiversity. A great area for walking and bird watching.

Le Noir Pré Often known simply as “The Orchid Field”, this unique site actually consists of two distinct but adjoining wet meadows. Le Noir Pré and the smaller Le Clos du Seigneur. The site is one of the last remaining strongholds of the Jersey Orchid or loose-flowered Orchid (Orchis Laxiflora). Orchid flowering season May and June.

St Catherine’s Woods

Also known as Rozel Woods, this woodland is set in a deep-cut, steepsided valley. A stream running through the valley floor has helped develop a wide range of habitats within the woodland.

Les Landes This coastal heathland is the most spectacular aspect of Jersey’s wild environments. Les Landes is Jersey’s largest single expanse of maritime heathland covering 160 hectares and bound by 3 km of high granite cliffs.

Ramsar Sites These are areas listed on the Ramstar List of Westland’s of International Importance which concerns the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. Jersey has four! These magnificent sites are; the southeast coast of Jersey, Les Minquiers, Les Ècréhous, and Les Dirouilles, and Les Pierres de lecq (The Paternosters). These sites are truly unique and worth a visit; however, three of these sites are offshore reefs and require a trip by boat. Check out the “Activities” section of the operators who can take you on a short boat trip to see these sites. The south coast area can be walked around and guided walks are available (contact Jersey Walk Adventures – see “Activities”).

St Catherine’s Woods

Important! If you wish to walk around the area independently please seek advice first as the tide rises rapidly and you can become stranded if unprepared. Knowledge of the tides is essential. Visit Jersey can provide advice if necessary but recommends that you employ a guide. See “Walking” section of this guide.

Les Minquiers & Ecrehous

The Minquiers and Ecréhous are two groups of islands and rocks forming part of the Bailiwick of Jersey, Channel Islands. They are respectively the most southerly and northerly land territories of the Bailiwick. The islands have no permanent inhabitants. Les Minquiers are situated 9 miles south of Jersey and administratively are part of the Parish of Grouville. Les Ecrehous are situated 6 miles north east of Jersey and administratively are part of the Parish of St Martin. For a visit to either of the group of islands it is best to go by RIB as then you can go right on-shore and also on the sand banks that uncover at low tide. Contact Jersey Seafaris on 07829 772222 for further details.

Val de la Mare Arboretum Hidden away in the north west corner of the Island next to Val de la Mare reservoir, is one of Britain’s most unique collection of trees in an arboretum called ‘The Forgotten Forest’. Planted in the late 1970s, seedlings grown from seeds gathered all over the world have progressed into an eclectic collection of mature trees. Divided into zones within the arboretum, North American maples and oaks stand near Australasian eucalyptus trees, interesting flora compliment a majestic wingnut, walnut and hickory zone. Don’t miss a giant Californian redwood specimen or the Japanese zone alongside the conifers and pines. There’s even an ‘Elm Trial Zone’ containing species of the tree which are thought to be resistant to Dutch elm disease.

Jersey’s most celebrated Head Chef Steve Smith at Bohemia restaurant is going from strength to strength having won a host of accolades during the past year including the highly sought after ‘Chef of the Year’ in the prestigious Catey Awards. Dubbed ‘the highest rated restaurant in Jersey’ by the Good Food Guide 2014, Steve Smith has created a truly outstanding dining experience which has placed Jersey firmly on the foodie map. The Michelin star restaurant was the only eatery in the Channel Islands to make it into the The Sunday Times Top 100 Food List in 2014, alongside world class eateries such as Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck, The Ledbury, The Waterside Inn, and Le Gavroche. Visitors to the Island are lucky enough to sample a Michelin starred Saturday three-course set lunch for just £19.95 per person as well as a selection of other menus. The set lunch includes lavish dishes such as Duck Egg with Garlic Cassonade and Wild Mushroom Tea; and Sea Bass with Roast Cauliflower, Razor Clams and Seaweed Emulsion. Steve Smith endeavours to offer a variety of local, fresh produce in all of his dishes and celebrates seasonal fruits and vegetables. The majority of ingredients such as the famous Jersey Royal Potato and fresh Scallops are locally sourced from the island of Jersey, while other ingredients are gathered from France, a mere 16 miles away. The fresh Oysters come from local fishermen and from Normandy, the capital of Oyster farming.

WHAT ARE PAYCARDS? Paycards are used to pay for parking throughout Jersey. They have to be used: MONDAY TO SATURDAY (INCLUSIVE) 8.00 am to 5.00 pm There are also a number of on-street and residents parking zones where parking is chargeable after 5.00pm and on Sundays. Please carefully check parking signs for details. You must use them whenever you park on-street (RED and YELLOW) zones and in all car parks where you see the above sign: The charge for parking on-street is 1 Unit per stay. This would be 20 minutes in a YELLOW zone and 1 hour in a RED zone. In car parks the charge is variable – see the notice boards at the entrance and within each car park for details of the tariff. You can buy books of Paycards wherever you see a sign similar to the one above displayed in shops, garages, hotels, your hire-car company, the car ferry, the Visitor Information Office or the Car Park Administration Office in Sand Street. They are available in three denominations – 1 Unit, 2 Units and 4 Units. PAYCARDS INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE Calculate the cost from the notice board (on-street parking is 1 Unit per visit). Scratch off five panels – MONTH, DAY, DATE, HOUR AND MINUTE (to next 5 minutes) to show the time of your arrival or the start of the next charging period if parking during a non chargeable period (overnight or Sunday). When using more than one Paycard it is important to scratch off each one identically. Display the validated Paycards by placing them face-up on the dashboard so that all the details on each card displayed can be clearly seen from outside the vehicle. You will also find instructions of the reverse of each Paycard. FAILURE TO CLEARLY DISPLAY ADEQUATE CORRECTLY MARKED PAYCARD(S) CAN RESULT IN A PENALTY CHARGE OF £60.00 A new pay on return style system which does not use Paycards is now in use in Sand Street MultiStorey Car Park - please see signs in that car park for details or phone (+44) 1534 448669 for further information

BEACH LIFEGUARDS IN JERSEY A team of professional lifeguards patrol key beaches from mid May to the end of September. Look out for the red and yellow flags which indicate the patrolled areas for swimming. Swim within the flags, but note that when a red flag is flying the conditions are dangerous and unsuitable for swimming. Jersey has some of the largest tidal flows in the world so take care when bathing or exploring the seashore. The beach lifeguard team is only too happy to advise swimmers regarding beach safety, please ask. The creation of the Jersey Botanic Gardens at Samarès Manor is a response to an ever increasing public interest in gardening and plants. The original gardens at Samarès have been restored with new and imaginative planting schemes. Jersey’s mild climate enables many tender and exotic plants to thrive. A comprehensive programme of plant labelling and multilingual signage ensures that a visit to the gardens is informative and inspirational as well as relaxing and enjoyable.

LEISURE AND INSPIRATION The gardens evoke feelings of tranquillity and peace, whilst being stimulating, interesting and fun. Children will enjoy discovering the willow labyrinth, the jungle path, the playground and large open spaces ideal for family outings. Visitors will discover areas for quiet thought and contemplation, extended walks through beautiful and varied surroundings and the opportunity to appreciate the aesthetics of a garden of distinction.

HERBS AT SAMARES The herb garden at Samarès Manor, which was created in the 1980s by internationally renowned designer, John Brookes, has stimulated interest in growing and using fresh herbs. The garden comprises a vast array of gravelled paths interspersed with large blocks of individual herb species. It is one of the largest and most comprehensive herb gardens in the UK.

GARDEN STYLES AND DESIGNS The gardens are very much a blend of the traditional and the innovative. The Japanese Garden, the camellia plantations and water gardens are legacies of the work of Sir James Knott in the 1920s. Sir James laid the foundations for the botanic gardens of today. Recent developments include gardens which demonstrate seasonality, the use of colour and different planting styles. Jersey’s mild climate enables many tender and exotic plants to thrive. n n n n n
