FRIDAY 1st - SUNDAY 3rd

Treasure – Uncovering Celts and Romans Exhibition

TB Davis – The Only Sailor in the Fleet - Exhibition

St Lawrence Charity Horse Show

Extended for a fourth year, this popular exhibition tells TB Davis’ story; from humble beginnings as a 13-year old fisherman to becoming qualified as an extra master under sail. The exhibition traces his story from his childhood, his time as a sailor, through the years when he made his fortune in Southern Africa to the glory of owning the racing schooner Westward. Time: 10:00 – 17:00 Price: £8.90 adult, £5.60 child, £7.90 senior, under 6s free Place: Maritime Museum, New North Quay, St. Helier Tel: 01534 633300 Web: www.jerseyheritage.org

This 3-day Charity Horse Show comprises showing, show jumping and inter-island-UK team jumping. The organisers aim to provide a good competition for the horse and pony world to be enjoyed by all and to raise funds for local charities – last year over £9,000 was raised. Highlights this year are Baxterbear, The Forces Equine Team from the UK and the Nottinghamshire Band of the Royal Engineers. Time: 09:00-18:00 Price: Free Place: Tamarind, La Rue des Vignes, St Peter

Discovered in Jersey in 2012, Le Catillon II is over 2,000 years old and is made up of approximately 70,000 silver alloy coins and gold and silver jewellery. A first for Jersey Heritage, the exhibition will feature a brand new conservation laboratory, where conservation experts will work to clean and uncover each part of the Celtic coin hoard in full view of visitors. Working with other organisations, Jersey Heritage will also be demonstrating aspects of a common, connected past, with artefacts borrowed from French and Guernsey collections. By using significant archaeological finds from the wider region, they can set the people and events associated with it in a chronological, geographical and cultural context. Time: 10:00 – 17:00 Price: £9 adult, £5 child, £8 senior, under 6s free Place: Jersey Museum, Weighbridge, St Helier Tel: 01534 633300 Web: www.jerseyheritage.org DAILY

Stitched Memories Exhibition The exhibition features about twenty samplers - beautifully stitched pieces of embroidery - usually made by young girls, as a demonstration or test of their skill in needlework. The earliest on display was made by 7 year old Elizabeth Anna Marett in 1736 and the most recent is the work of 29 year old Patricia Bell who stitched it when she was being held at the internment camp at Biberach in Germany during the Occupation. Time: 10:00 – 17:00 Price: £7.90 adult, £5 child, £6.90 senior, under 6s free Place: Hamptonne Country Life Museum, La Rue de la Patente, St Lawrence Tel: 01534 633300 Web: www.jerseyheritage.org

DAILY

Ice Age Island - Exhibition This is the second year of the Ice Age Island three-year archaeological project in which Jersey Heritage, and other partners on the island, is working with a team of academics drawn from a number of prestigious universities and institutions who are exploring Jersey’s prehistory. Specialists are searching our headlands, coasts, caves, fields and seabed in the hope of discovering new sites and Ice Age landscapes, as well as applying cutting edge scientific techniques to already known sites. This exhibition reports on their progress as they discover new and exciting stories about how our ancestors lived and adapted to the Ice Age world. It is a story that spans over half a million years and also tells of the discovery of the Celtic Coin Hoard in Jersey in 2012 with a film of the excavation and a full replica of the hoard. Time: 10:00 – 17:00 Price: £7.90 adult, £5 child, £6.90 senior, under 6s free Place: La Hougue Bie, Grouville Tel: 01534 633300 Web: www.jerseyheritage.org

Robert was intimately familiar with the full breadth of wild nature, from tundra, great wild lakes and damp Nordic forests to marshes and scrubland. Samarès Manor

Jersey’s Garden Treasure

The Fascination of Herbs

The Gardens

Samarès Manor’s herb garden, the largest and most comprehensive in Britain, contains hundreds of culinary, fragrant, cosmetic and medicinal plants, from trees to small shrubs and annuals. The garden, created by renowned garden designer and author, John Brookes, contains large blocks of herbs, set within an abstract array of gravelled paths. The introduction of herbs at Samarès has helped to widen public interest in these versatile plants and encouraged people to design their own herb gardens.

Created in the 1920s by Sir James Knott and substantially restored and replanted over the last twenty years, the gardens of Samarès Manor embrace many different design styles and themes. They include a diversity of environmental conditions and plant types. The gardens evoke feelings of tranquillity and peace, whilst being stimulating, interesting and fun. ■ ■ ■ ■

The Botanical Project Samarès Manor’s response to the increased public awareness in plants and gardening has been to introduce an educational approach to the on-going development of the gardens. It has included a comprehensive programme of plant identification and labelling, together with the creation of gardens which illustrate different design themes and the effects of seasonality, climate and environment. Many tender and exotic plants that thrive in Jersey’s mild climate can be seen growing at Samarès. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

Enjoy Nature La Lande de Ouest Part of the dry coastal heathland lying above the cliffs along the greater part of the south-west coast. A designated Site of Special Interest (SSI) and rich in flora and fauna, this area is an important part of the island’s landscape, and biodiversity. A great area for walking and bird watching.

St Catherine’s Woods

Le Noir Pré

Ramsar Sites

Often known simply as “The Orchid Field”, this unique site actually consists of two distinct but adjoining wet meadows. Le Noir Pré and the smaller Le Clos du Seigneur. The site is one of the last remaining strongholds of the Jersey Orchid or loose-flowered Orchid (Orchis Laxiflora). Orchid flowering season May and June.

These are areas listed on the Ramstar List of Westland’s of International Importance which concerns the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. Jersey has four! These magnificent sites are; the southeast coast of Jersey, Le Minquiers, Les Ècréhous, and Les Dirouilles, and Les Pierres de lecq (The Paternosters). These sites are truly unique and worth a visit; however, three of these sites are offshore reefs and require a trip by boat. Check out the “Activities” section of the operators who can take you on a short boat trip to see these sites. The south coast area can be walked around and guided walks are available (contact Jersey Walk Adventures – see “Activities”). Important! If you wish to walk around the area independently please seek advice first as the tide rises rapidly and you can become stranded if unprepared. Knowledge of the tides is essentially. Jersey Tourism can provide advice if necessary but recommends that you employ a guide. See “Walking” section of this guide.

St Catherine’s Woods

Also known as Rozel Woods, this woodland is set in a deep-cut, steepsided valley. A stream running through the valley floor has helped develop a wide range of habitats within the woodland.

Les Landes This coastal heathland is the most spectacular aspect of Jersey’s wild environments. Les Landes is Jersey’s largest single expanse of maritime heathland covering 160 hectares and bound by 3 km of high granite cliffs.

Val de la Mare Arboretum

Le Noir Pré

Hidden away in the north west corner of the Island next to Val de la Mare reservoir, is one of Britain’s most unique collection of trees in an arboretum called ‘The Forgotten Forest’. Planted in the late 1970s, seedlings grown from seeds gathered all over the world have progressed into an eclectic collection of mature trees. Divided into zones within the arboretum, North American maples and oaks stand near Australasian eucalyptus trees, interesting flora compliment a majestic wingnut, walnut and hickory zone. Don’t miss a giant Californian redwood specimen or the Japanese zone alongside the conifers and pines. There’s even an ‘Elm Trial Zone’ containing species of the tree which are thought to be resistant to Dutch elm disease.

BEACH LIFEGUARDS IN JERSEY A team of professional lifeguards patrol key beaches from mid May to the end of September. Look out for the red and yellow flags which indicate the patrolled areas for swimming. Swim within the flags, but note that when a red flag is flying the conditions are dangerous and unsuitable for swimming. Jersey has some of the largest tidal flows in the world so take care when bathing or exploring the seashore. The beach lifeguard team is only too happy to advise swimmers regarding beach safety, please ask.
