LATEST EVENTS

Welcome to the summer season’s programme at the Opera House. I am delighted to announce that we will be presenting Broadway’s multi-award winning musical comedy, Thoroughly Modern Millie, starring Hayley Tamaddon (Emmerdale, Coronation Street) as the irrepressible Millie. No need to travel to Broadway when we have our incredible 1900s venue bringing New York’s City Jazz Age to the Opera House stage from Tuesday 31 July to Saturday 4 August. On the comedy front we have Kevin Bridges on his warm up tour – as we go to print there are only a few tickets available from our Box Office. ‘Mountain Moose’ Craig Campbell, described by some as the Canadian Billy Connolly, emerges from the Fringe Jungle in a tiger-striped onesie on his third solo tour. Join us for a night of death-defying tales and inspiration from one of the most accomplished, exploratory mountaineers of all time, Simon Yates, who is best known for his role in the harrowing expedition to the Peruvian Andes documented in Joe Simpson’s bestseller Touching the Void. As ever, an accessible way to enjoy international arts is available through our popular screenings:

GIACOMO PUCCINI’S

MADAMA BUTTERFLY LIVE FROM GLYNDEBOURNE

One of the most famous operas of all time that has inspired numerous contemporary adaptations and reimaginings including the hit musical Miss Saigon. When an innocent young Geisha meets an American naval officer she falls instantly and deeply in love. Giving up her family and her faith, she risks all in marriage to the dashing Lieutenant Pinkerton. But her fragile happiness cannot last. Praised by critics as a ‘thoughtful, provocative staging’ and a ‘scathing study of exploitation’, Annilese Miskimmon’s production of Puccini’s classic opera updates the action to the 1950s. 22

SAUL

ENCORE (RECORDED LIVE AT GLYNDEBOURNE IN 2015)

David has vanquished the giant Goliath but not everyone rejoices in his victory. Jealous of the young warrior, King Saul turns against him, descending into violent, destructive madness that forces his children to choose between loyalty and love, tearing both family and a nation apart. Handel’s vision of a Lear-like King is astonishing in its psychological complexity, offering a musical portrait of mental collapse few have since matched. Barrie Kosky’s extraordinary, award-winning, 2015 production

is a blazingly original and visually spectacular staging of Handel’s oratorio that pairs baroque music with contemporary choreography and lavish designs to create an enthralling theatrical fusion of old and new.
