Wild Safari with money-back guarantee

Many of our visitors haven’t seen a moose in nature before, they are also very interested in our snow mobiles, says Lars Westerlund. They are known as the ’King of the Forest’ in Sweden. We are at Moose Safari in Jutis, a little village 48km west of Arjeplog. It’s a wonderful February day and the landscape sparkles in the sun. What an amazing feeling it is to observe mooses feeding, just a short distance from us.

It is the Jutis hunting team which organizes tours. Fodder is made available during a couple of months every winter. – Their annual migration begins around the middle of March and then they lose interest in hay. They gradually wander up the mountains, says Ulf Westerlund- villager and tour guide. Although the sun was shining it was still quite cold and the group from Magna and Toyota soon wished to return to the village. – We’ll go back to the hut where a warm fire, hot coffee and sandwiches await, said Moose Safari guide Lars Westerlund. Bejawan Promduang, 43

Coop Konsum Arjeplog

This week’s local Family: My partner Mikael, a 22-year old daughter and Mikaels 18-year old daughter.

wanted. I could visit my friends, go for a drive or take my dog for a walk outside town.

Home: I came to Arjeplog 11 years ago. Before that I lived in Bangkok, Thailand, where I worked in a bank preparing information for printing credit cards. I really like living in Arjeplog, the nature and the people – nothing at all like Thailand. after a short stint in Hudiksvall. I didn’t know anyone there and the surroundings didn’t feel safe in the evenings as the do here in Arjeplog. For a short while I lived in Hudiksvall but I didn’t like living there. I didn’t know anyone and the surroundings didn’t feel safe in the evenings as the do here in Arjeplog.

The one place that you enjoy the most: I like to be at home, but I also like being at the job I have today.

What about your job: I like my job, my colleagues are great and so are the customers. At Coop Konsum I get a chance to meet a lot of people and I must say that most of the people in Arjeplog are very kind and nice.

Do you have a dream: No, nothing special. I think I have a rather good life. What is important in life: To have a nice and loving family, doing things together with your family. To have money to spend on things that I need and want. Mikael and I bought a house together and that meant a lot to me, buying and owning the house together made me feel involved. A trip you would like to do: A cruise of some kind, from Sweden to Finland maybe. I would love to go on a vacation, living on a cruise ship.

He likes his trusty snow shoes Jens Müller normally works for the chassi development department of the BMW Group in Munich, but is currently winter testing in Nåtti. At the moment he lives at Lyktan Hotel in Arjeplog and often walks from work across the lakes Kakel and Hornavan. He doesn’t make the journey on foot every day. It depends entirely on how his work day has been and how long it has been. – It’s nice to walk to the hotel after being in the office all day. It’s only a few kilometers and doesn’t take long. The fresh air and exercise feels great at the end of the working day.

Favourite food: I love spicy food and I use a lot of piri-piri in my cooking. (A small, very spicy chili fruit) Spare time activities: I love cooking and I spend a lot of time thinking about food, reading recipes on the Internet and planning meals. I also watch TV and spend time in our cottage in Vaxborg. I like to pick berries in the autumn, blueberries, lingonberries and cloudberries, but I don’t pick and sell. I only pick for the household. Present car and your dream car: I don’t even have a driver’s license but I’ve decided to try and learn how to drive. I have bought the books and started reading a little bit. It would be nice to be able to drive myself because then I could go whenever and wherever I

Jens Müller likes his snow shoes and uses them to walk in the beautiful surroundings in Arjeplog.

The weather is of no concern. He really

enjoys the fantastic view of the lake and all the small islands. Benjawan really love dogs and have had five or six dogs during her life. Right now she has a Spanish water dog called Piconet. This is one of the things she likes about Sweden, there are no homeless dogs and cats on the streets like in Thailand. People here are kind to animals and take care of their pets. 2

– It’s a relatively short distance and the walking keeps you warm, in spite of both cold and windy conditions. He uses snow shoes to cross the ice. They are easy to walk in and don’t requires any special walking technique, Jens says.

Murders in the automotive testing industry

t a e S t o H e h T

Antonio Baptista, 38 Application engineer, department manager for an application team in India BOSCH Family: My wife Helga. Home: I’m originally from Portugal were I was born and have my family. Through my work I have had the opportunity to travel and live in different places like Germany, Italy, China and for the last four years I’ve lived in India. Company: BOSCH Occupation: I’m a department manager for the application team in India. What about your job: I slipped into this more of a fortuitousness, but I like my job. It’s interesting and it feels good being part of the development of safety systems for cars. Favourite food: In general I like seafood only natural being a portuguese, he answers with a laugh.(Editors note: Portugal has a well developed fishing industry which reflects in the amount of seafood consumed, they have the highest consumption in Europe) More about the food and Antonios cooking: I really like to cook and also to taste local food and try to cook it when I travel. In India there are a lot of vegetarians, and I have to admit that I had been there for a while before I realized that I only eaten vegetables during those weeks. What about India: It has been quite an experience working in India. It’s an interesting country with it’s different cultures and languages. A friend told me before I was going to India, that the normal scale used to compare everything would be radically changed - and he was right. India made the scale both much, much larger and much wider.

Arjeplog and the vehicle testing industry has inspired a new criminal novel that will be released this Spring. It’s the Swedish author Jakob Mjöbring that have written a novel called ʻKöld’ (Coldness in English)

Present car and dream car: Me and my wife owns a car, an Alfa Romeo 147, bit since we both are working in India we only use in when being in Portugal on holiday. In India we have a company car. My dream car, since I was a little boy is Porsche. It wasn’t a rational choice, more of a passion. Today I know a lot more about cars than being a boy but I still choose Porsche. Most probably a black classic 911. Spare time activities: I’m a sporty person. Playing fotball and tennis. Nowadays mostly playing golf. India is a very noisy constantly ongoing place, but where I live the golf course is located in the middle of the city. And believe it or not, the golf course isn’t that crowded and gives some peace and silence. A trip that you would like to do: I travel a lot through my work but missed parts on the map are North America and Africa. I had always curiosity about Antarctica - but that’s not a dream trip, he says laughing. What’s good in Arjeplog: I’ve been here several times during the years. It’s a beautiful place. A simple thing like driving a car around the town in nice weather is an extra ordinary experience. What’s important in life: To be happy with the simple things. Your philosophy on life: I always tries to keep positive and not look back. Bad things happen, things arent’t always going your way - but you shouldn’t let it stay in your mind. What is the best thing you learned from your parents: From my father to be humble, and from my mother never to settle, always wanting to do even better, wanting even more. 4

It’s a crime novel, full of action, about contemporary challenges in a couple of icy winter days in the innermost of the North of Sweden. A series of murders among the German automotive testing industry in the small but international village Arjeplog, forces Katja Lyss, a police from a special unit, to push herself to the absolute limit. It’s the first novel in the serie about the Police Katja Lyss, and book number one will be published in April 2016.

A flag of a people without a nation

The Sami flag. The Sami people have no nation of their own but they do have their own flag. It was designed in 1986 by a Norwegian Sami artist and have been swaying in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia ever since. The colours and symbols were chosen with great care as they all have their own special meaning. Red, blue, green and yellow are thetraditional colours of a Sami costume. Green is the colour of plants and nature, blue represents water, red symbolizes the warmth of a fire and love - and yellow is the colour of the sun and a long Life. The circle in the middle represents the sun and the moon - red for the sun and blue for the moon. The circle is also a symbol for sprituality, meaning that everything in life is connected to each other.

Positive changes at Hornavan Hotel The chef at Hornavan Hotel, Daniel Fjellström.

The staff serving, from the left: Dale McManus & Sophie Topalidi, students from Ireland, Hamid Shirzad, Elin Ögren, Nasrollah Tajik, Mica Vesterlund. This season there has been a lot of changes at Hornavan Hotel. They have rebuilt, both the outside and the inside. Build a complete floor on top of the Hotel to get more rooms but also changed quite some in the dining room. Moving the bar to get more space for the guests, exposing the amazing panarama view over the lake Hornavan. But thats not all. – No, laughs the new chef, Daniel Fjellström, there is more. We made some changes in the menus, both in the lunch meny and in the à

Development of auditory warnings systems At low speeds electric vehicles are often more quiet compared to vehicles powered by internal internal combustion engines. Because of this they are considered to be a greater risk to pedestrians and other unprotected road users. To maintain a high level of road safety the EU Parliament has decided that from 2019 all new electric vehicles have to be equipped with an auditory warning system. Therefore the Interactive institute in Piteå has developed a project, developing and evaluating sound concepts that finally will result in a number of prototypes tested in a real environment. The results are meant to help the industry understand the impact of the new claims,

la carte. We have theme nights and we also try to have more opening hours with the goal to serve some kind of food every day, year round. They try to serve more local products than before, using old traditional cooking methods combined with new ones. A successful concept so far. – Our theme nights seem to be popular both amoung locals aswell as testers, says the young cook Oskar Olofsson-Dolk. – It’s nice when the guests appreciate what we are doing, showing us that we are on the right path, Daniel says. and the knowledge generated is directly useful both for manufacturing and for the authorities concerned of the requirements and It’s effects. Based on the result a package of measures will be created to reduce the negative impacts identified and enhances the experience of electric vehicles. Research on auditory warning systems has so far focused on the need of systems from a road safety perspective, but the introduction of the warning systems means new types of audio sources that will impact on traffic noise and potentially people’s attitudes to electric vehicles. The effects depends on the sound that vehicle manufacturers will use in their vehicle. Manufacturers have commented on the draft laws on the systems and says that if warning sounds designed incorrectly, it can lead to a lower acceptance and sales of electric vehicles. Which of course isn’t a desirable development. 5

Sophie and Dale are both students at a tourist and event school in Ireland. They have been in Arjeplog, at Hornavan Hotel, for three weeks doing an internship. We asked them what they’ve learned but also enjoyed the most during their stay in Arjeplog. – The beautiful landscape. Working as a waitress with this amazing view over the mountains and the lake Hornavan has been absolutely fantastic, Sophie says. – We don’t serve as many different kinds of meat in Ireland, as in this restaurant. I’ve tasted moose, reindeer and even bear meat and it has been an interesting experience, says Dale.

More from last weeks Hot Seat Christian Vay, Knorr-Bremse. Last weeks ”Hot Seat”, Christian Vay, Knorr-Bremse, had such a wonderful answer to the question what super Power he would like to have. Unfortunately his answer was not included, therefore it will be presented this week instead. If you could choose a super power, what would you choose: My wish for a super power would be having the ability to make decisions that would benefit everyone. You know what it’s like, decisions of the majority are good for almost everyone, but there are often people who become disadvantaged. The minority are sacrificed for the better of the majority. Editors note: We often see the results of decisions of this kind in the country-side. Decisions are made from the reality in big cities and they seldom take into consideration the best of people living in places like Arjeplog.

Lars & Ulf Westerlund, two of the guides at the Moose Safari in the village of Jutis.

Wild Safari with money-back guarantee Continued from page 1 The return trip became more of an adventure than anticipated when one of the snowmobiles broke through the surface ice and ended up in the a little water. This was nothing to be concerned about as the two guides are not only experienced hunters, but also experts in snow mobile driving in extreme conditions.

We spoke about moose and their living conditions while drinking coffee, eating and warming our hands over the fire. – Moose Safari gives everyone an opportunity to see moose in their natural environment, to meet us locals and to experience the beautiful nature of the north up close. It’s a great tour which includes a ’moose guarantee’ - if no moose are seen on the day of the tour, you will recieve a refund, says Lars and Ulf.

You’ll learn a thing or two about the moose during the Safari tour.
