Computer Skills October already! Here we are a just a matter of weeks from mid-term and in some ways I feel like the semester is only just starting to get rolling for me. I've had quite a few instructors make arrangements for Library orientation sessions for their students and I hope that I will be hearing from more of you this month. It's never too late to bring your students into the Library, even if for just a quick tour. Like many of you, I spend a lot of time on my computer-- both at work and at home. I get most of my news from blogs, I use software to create my calendar and I do almost all of my communication online. When the power goes out or the College experiences internet "slow downs" I wonder how I ever got along without my computer. Then I think of the handful of students I meet on a regular basis who are not at all comfortable in this online world, yet want to be. This month I've been thinking about how the Library can best help C.O.D. students-- especially our adult students-- bridge the digital divide that separates them from some of our most useful resources. (Smart Online Searcher) Workshops in the Library! These 1-2 hour workshops are free and available to every member of the C.O.D. community. http://www.nytimes.com/ learning/ The New York Times Learning Network is made up of three sections: Student Connections, Teacher Connections and Parent Connections-- each designed to help integrate online news content into literacy development. The Student Connection combines current event knowledge (stories and quizzes) with vocabulary building, letterwriting skills and verbal test taking skills. Instructors can use the Teacher Connections area as a place to find ideas on how to integrate current events into the curriculum. Teacher Connections also provides links to the latest education news from the New York Times.
