• VISITING

VISITING Jekyll Island From our sprawling beaches to our historic ruins, Jekyll Island is a coastal haven where nature and humans peacefully co-exist. Below are some things to note while you explore.

Tides

Jekyll Island experiences two high tides and two low tides each day. The time it takes to go from the first high tide to the following high tide is 12 hours and 25 minutes. High tides at Jekyll Island range between 6-9 feet above low tide levels. Be sure to check the tide charts before heading to the beach: gacoast.com/tide.html

Beach Accessibility

Jekyll Island is committed to beach accessibility for residents and guests with disabilities. There are five public beach access points that are accessible to people with physical disabilities: St. Andrews, Great Dunes, Corsair, and Glory Beach Parks, and Beach Village. Beach-going wheelchairs are available for use at no cost on a first-come, first-served basis. Please call 912.635.2368 to reserve one.

Airports

Just a short 30-minute drive from Jekyll Island, Brunswick’s Golden Isles Airport (BQK) is served by regular daily flights by Delta Airlines out of Atlanta. International airports in Savannah (SAV) and Jacksonville (JAX) are about an hour drive from Jekyll Island. Both airports offer rental car and limousine services. Private pilots may use the Jekyll Island Airport (09J).

Ocean Water

Why is the water brown? Large tides push and pull the water from the marshes to the ocean. The tides mix up sediment and microscopic plant and animal life from the marsh, which can make the water a little murky. The water is not polluted. In fact, wildlife thrives here because the waters are healthy and rich in life.

Oleander: Though from its fairway the course is not a particularly difficult layout, it is considered tightly designed, with ocean breezes and short grasses providing a challenge to all golfers.

Jekyll Island is a state park with acres of wilderness. Please remember, when you visit Jekyll Island, you are a guest in this wild habitat. Treat all wildlife with respect. Feeding, harassing, approaching, injuring, or removing any wildlife is against the law. Please contact the Jekyll Island Wildlife Response for general wildlife concerns at 912.222.5992.

Horton Pond

Located across from Villas by the Sea The observation deck is wheelchair accessible and provides a wonderful view of the whole pond. A floating platform has been anchored in the pond to attract turtles, alligators, and birds to rest where they can easily and safely be seen from the deck. The low-lying promontory on the north side of the pond has been modified to form a small island, thereby providing habitat that is designed to attract nesting wading birds.

Ranger Walks

Jekyll Island is home to more than a thousand acres of maritime forest, 10 miles of shoreline, and marshes filled with many wonders. Learn more about the island’s natural resources from Jekyll’s own park ranger during these unique eco-experiences offered December to March. Learn more jekyllisland.com/rangerwalks.

The hard, white shell left by a dead sand dollar is called a test. A good rule of thumb is to “take the test,” and leave brown on the ground. The brown ones are still alive!

Two species of venomous snakes can be found on Jekyll Island: rattlesnakes and cottonmouths. Neither is common in areas where people spend much time. If you encounter a snake, do not approach it. The animal will likely move on if you give it space.

The knobbed whelk is the state shell of both Georgia and New Jersey. These big snails are a fairly common animal found along the inter-tidal beaches and marshes of Jekyll Island. Feel free to take these shells as a souvenir, but only if they’re uninhabited.

Do not feed alligators. It is illegal and unsafe. Be aware of your surroundings — alligators may be present in open water. Do not approach an alligator of any size. Do not attempt to retrieve a golf ball that has fallen in water or near an alligator.

• JEKYLL ISLAND FOUNDATION

The Jekyll Island Foundation (JIF) was created in 1999 to raise money for projects beyond the Jekyll Island Authority’s financial capabilities. These projects focus on conservation, preservation, and education surrounding the island’s natural, cultural, and historic resources. The Foundation is managed by an independent board of up to 25 individuals representing diverse interests and communities from across the state and beyond. Since its inception, JIF has provided funding for numerous projects, further enriching guests’ experiences on Jekyll Island. JIF has directed significant capital campaigns for the Georgia Sea Turtle Center (GSTC) and the Jekyll Island Mosaic, a project to renovate and reinvent the Jekyll Island Museum. Further achievements can be seen throughout Jekyll Island, including the Horton Pond Wildlife Viewing & Basking Platform, the Skeet House, and new exhibits at the GSTC. JIF is committed to on-going support through programs such as diamondback terrapin research, transport, and rehabilitation; educational initiatives for the GSTC; and restoration supplies for Hollybourne Cottage. Support for the Jekyll Island Foundation can be made through annual memberships, donations to specific initiatives, tribute gifts, and more. Visit jekyllislandfoundation.org to learn more.
