A Place for Georgia’s Children This February, Camp Jekyll will open its doors to children in Georgia and beyond. The more than 15-acre campus has been completely redesigned and rebuilt. It features six large, modern sleeping cabins that can accommodate up to 256 guests at one time. The campus also includes a dining hall, staff cabin, two outdoor pavilions with fire pits, a basketball court, volleyball courts, a private beach crossover, and a beautiful, 300-seat auditorium that includes multi-use classrooms. The creation of Camp Jekyll was the vision of Georgia’s Governor Nathan Deal, who allocated $17 million for the Camp’s development and construction. Sitting in the original footprint of the outdated Jekyll Island 4-H Center, Camp Jekyll will continue the tradition of teaching Georgia’s children about the Island’s rich environment and diverse wildlife. Georgia 4-H will manage the day-to-day operations and educational programming, while the Jekyll Island Authority will manage campus and building maintenance. The camp will also be available for rental to youth groups for camps and activities throughout the year.

E D U C AT I O N & CO NS E RVAT I O N

Extensive research and planning was invested in the development of Camp Jekyll to ensure the buildings would be kid-friendly, able to handle groups of varying sizes and ages, and that they would blend seamlessly into the surrounding natural landscape of Jekyll Island. Massive oak and mature palm trees from the former Jekyll Island Convention Center site were saved and transplanted within Camp Jekyll’s campus.

While the majority of the campus is After new construction, it was crucial to create educational opportunities that highlighted the history of the campus. The Historic Pavilion in the center of campus is from the Island’s first segregated beach. It was preserved and restored and now serves as a canteen, gift shop, and hub for activities. Interpretative exhibits documenting the site’s history from the late 1950s to 1964 are displayed throughout the campus.

Camp Jekyll is now accepting reservations for the 2017 program year. More information at jekyll4h.org Camp Jekyll • 550 S. Beachview Dr. • 912.635.4115

J E K Y L L’S B E AC H E S The beaches on Jekyll Island are unlike those of any other coastal destination. Best known for their natural bounty, each of Jekyll Island’s beaches is completely different than the other. From bird watching on St. Andrews to photo ops on Driftwood Beach, these sun-drenched sanctuaries offer a truly invigorating experience. DRIFTWOOD BEACH Consistently voted one

of America’s “Ten Most Romantic Beaches,” Driftwood Beach is an escape to another world. Ancient driftwood monuments line the waterfront, creating an unforgettable backdrop. Perhaps that’s one reason USA TODAY featured it as one of the best Southern beaches for a weekend escape. GREAT DUNES* This is Jekyll Island’s most

popular beach for families. The 20-acre, beachfront park is easily accessible and offers several picnic pavilions, an activities deck, play areas, and bocce ball and volleyball courts. Ample parking and public beach access with restrooms and showers are available.

SOUTH DUNES With an elevated boardwalk crossing 20-foot sand dunes, this park features beach access, an observation deck, and a freshwater pond. Picnic tables and grills along with open-air and screened-in picnic pavilions make this park the perfect spot for a relaxing family event. ST. ANDREWS* This beach is a short walk from Jekyll Point, the southern-most tip of the Island. It’s a popular spot for watching migratory birds as well as groups of dolphins. The picnic area features a twostory wildlife viewing platform and the Wanderer historical marker. See map on pages 12-13 for beach access points. *Accessible beach access points are located at Great Dunes, Beach Village, and St. Andrews. Beach-going wheelchairs are available daily, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at no charge, by calling 912.635.2368.

GLORY BEACH Graceful sea oats and pristine sand dunes line Glory Beach on the south end of Jekyll Island. You’ll be amazed at how wide this beach is – and you’ll see why movie scouts chose to film portions of “Glory” here. Glory Boardwalk is next to the soccer complex on the Island’s south end.
