ISLAND GUIDE

welcome

The dead of winter doesn’t exist on Jekyll Island. Whether it’s a peaceful stroll down Driftwood Beach, an invigorating bike ride through 20 miles of paths and trails, or an inspiring journey through decades gone by, any season is the perfect time to visit Jekyll Island. We hope this guide will help you enjoy everything the island has to offer this winter.

VISITING Jekyll Island From our sprawling beaches to our historic ruins, Jekyll Island is a coastal haven where nature and humans peacefully co-exist. Below are some things to note while you explore.

Tides

Jekyll Island experiences two high tides and two low tides each day. The time it takes to go from the first high tide to the following high tide is 12 hours and 25 minutes. High tides at Jekyll Island range between 6-9 feet above low tide levels. Be sure to check the tide charts before heading to the beach: gacoast.com/tide.html

Beach Accessibility

Jekyll Island is committed to beach accessibility for residents and guests with disabilities. There are five public beach access points that are accessible to people with physical disabilities: St. Andrews, Great Dunes, Corsair, and Glory Beach Parks, and Beach Village. Beach-going wheelchairs are available for use at no cost on a first-come, first-served basis. Please call 912.635.2368 for reservations.

Airports

Just a short 30-minute drive from Jekyll Island, Brunswick’s Golden Isles Airport (BQK) is served by regular daily flights by Delta Airlines to/from Atlanta. International airports in Savannah (SAV) and Jacksonville (JAX) are about an hour drive from Jekyll Island. Both airports offer rental car and limousine services. Private pilots may use the Jekyll Island Airport (09J).

Ocean Water

Why is the water brown? Large tides push and pull the water from the marshes to the ocean. The tides mix up sediment and microscopic plant and animal life from the marsh, which can make the water a little murky. The water is not polluted. In fact, wildlife thrives here because the waters are healthy and rich in life.

Horton Pond

Located across from Villas by the Sea The observation deck is wheelchair accessible and provides a wonderful view of the whole pond. A floating platform has been anchored in the pond to attract turtles, alligators, and birds to rest where they can easily and safely be seen from the deck. The low-lying promontory on the north side of the pond has been modified to form a small island, thereby providing habitat that is designed to attract nesting wading birds. JAN.MAR.

The hard, white shell left by a dead sand dollar is called a test. A good rule of thumb is to “take the test,” and leave brown on the ground. The brown ones are still alive!

Two species of venomous snakes can be found on Jekyll Island: rattlesnakes and cottonmouths. Neither is common in areas where people spend much time. If you encounter a snake, do not approach it. The animal will likely move on if you give it space. The knobbed whelk is the state shell of both Georgia and New Jersey. These big snails are a fairly common animal found along the inter-tidal beaches and marshes of Jekyll Island. Feel free to take these shells as a souvenir, but only if they’re uninhabited. Do not feed alligators. It is illegal and unsafe. Be aware of your surroundings — alligators may be present in open water. Do not approach an alligator of any size. Do not attempt to retrieve a golf ball that has fallen in water or near an alligator.

Great Dunes: Famed course designer Walter “Old Man” Travis constructed Great Dunes in 1926. Reflecting the Island’s unique coastal terrain, the 9-hole alternates in difficulty and simplicity.

Oleander: Though from its fairway the course is not a particularly difficult layout, it is considered tightly designed, with ocean breezes and short grasses providing a challenge to all golfers.

Pine Lakes: Known as the Island’s family-oriented course—despite being the longest—Pine Lakes was developed by designer Clyde Johnson to incorporate family-friendly tee boxes, making it an even playing ground for both adults and younger players.

The Jekyll Island Foundation is devoted to raising funds for conservation, preservation, and education initiatives on and for Jekyll Island. A place as special as Jekyll Island relies on the vision of insightful people and organizations to help its character thrive.

• JEKYLL ISLAND FOUNDATION

Conservation. Preservation. Education.

Jekyll Island is unique among state parks, famous for its natural beauty and historical significance. The Jekyll Island Authority (JIA) is responsible for overall management of the park but receives no public operating funds. Revenue is generated from leases, fees, and amenity operations. Consequently, the JIA established the Jekyll Island Foundation to raise money for projects focused on conservation, preservation, and education—caring for the island’s natural, cultural, and historical resources, and ensuring stewardship of what makes Jekyll Island so magical. Get involved in preserving Jekyll’s unique environment—participate in diamondback terrapin conservation, help us transform an old museum into a magnificently restored island amenity, honor a loved one with a memorial bench or live oak, or join as a foundation member. The Jekyll Island Foundation is proud to be dedicated to the welfare of this extraordinary island and would be equally proud to have you join us. Visit jekyllislandfoundation.org to learn more.
